Famous Folks who are Unlikely Fans of Your Favorite Artist

Strange but true....

THESE CELEBS HONOR THE FIRE!

1. Kate Bush - I've noted on ILX a bajillion times that Ms.Bush once exclaimed that that last time she openly wept was when she'd heard that Killing Joke had broken up (which they've done more times than you've had hot dinners). Closer scrutiny reveals that Kate put her money where her mouth was by employing erstwhile Joke bass player Youth to whack at the four thick strings on her seizmicly gorgeous Hounds of Love album. Cheers, Kate!!!

2. Neil Finn - Kiwi singer/songwriter gent and driving force behind late-era Split Enz and the plangently pleasant Crowded House. Not the sort've type you'd expect to be a fan of the black-hearted apcalypso of the Joke that Kills, but alas YEA! Not only did Finn recruit Youth to produce their 1993 album, Together Alone, but while Youth was down twiddling their knobs in Crowded House's native New Zealand, Finn proved to be the lynchpin in goading Jaz Coleman (who'd since relocated to New Zealand himself) to patch things up with Youth and actually record with the band again (Youth had flown the coop after Revelations). The end result was 1994 barnstorming Pandemonium album. Salut, Neilo!

3. Nikki Sixx - Though the hirsute Motley Crue bass player almost personifies the fatuous rockstar excesses, cliches and ludicrous banalities that Killing Joke are diametrically opposed to, Sixx is purportedly a massive fan of all things Joke (and even swiped the middle-eight of the Joke's "Love Like Blood" for the intro to "Dr.Feelgood"). Beyond that bit of pilferage, Sixx even recorded a ham-fisted cyberfunk track dubbed "Killing Joke" for his ill-fated 2000 side-project named 58. He's also apparently buddy-buddy with the Joke's other bass player, Raven.

Which unlikely supporters fly the flag for your fave artist?

i'm not huge on modest mouse aside from a handful of songs, but the olsen twins consider them their favorite band.

Debbie Gibson once proclaimed great love for Redd Kross (which might explain why she sang on a Soft Boys cover by the Circle Jerks, featuring ex-Redd Kross guitarist Handsome Greg Hetson).

I wouldn't say he's at all an unlikely fan of theirs, but I once stood next to Minuteman/fIREHOSER Mike Watt at a Jon Spencer Blues Explosion show at late, lamented Tramp's. He could NOT stop grinning and dancing like a loon. It was most ent ertaining

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I was suprised to read Farah Fawcett quoted about how ZZ Top was her favorite band in the book in the new box set.

One of the reasons that Plant chose Albini to record that record with Page a couple of years back was because he was a fan of Big Black and The Jesus Lizard.

earlnash, Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

steely dan once professed a liking for dr. buzzard's original savannah band (and it makes even more sense if you believe that "glamour profession" knowingly swiped some musical ideas from "cherchez la femme").

Thomas Pynchon loves Lotion

do you really believe that?

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, he did write their liner notes. He obviously at least tolerates them. And yes, he did write those notes (my friend Sean knows Pynchon's agent....who is also Pynchon's wife).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(wink wink!)

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Thomas Pynchon loves Lotion

I'm betting Pynchon is in Lotion. Seems like it'd be a good place to hide.

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 6 May 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

i usnderstood the notes were a favor to the band, as the bros. in lotion's father is pynchon's publisher (or accountant), it's out there on one of the pynchon's sites.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 6 May 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Plant is a well-known obsessive listener of everything and anything, and puts just about everyone else of his time/place/generation to absolute *shame* when it comes to still keeping his ears open. It hasn't always translated over into the solo work but damned if it didn't help make Led Zeppelin as huge as it was. Him saying he's a huge Swans fan might not seem like much now, but him saying it in 1984 -- as he indeed was -- gives you an idea. If he ever discovered this place he and Rockist Scientist could talk Arabian and Mediterrenean music until the cows came home.

Meanwhile, that Fred Durst talk about MBV the other day did amuse me.

Mr. Nolte was at the (Smog) show at the Bowery Ballroom last summer, and made a point to go backstage and introduce himself.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

also I've seen Stereolab and DJ Shadow CDs at Laurie Anderson's house.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

that really true about nolte? holy shit!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Less surprising, perhaps, but on that Smog tour in LA, Stence, Elvis T and myself noticed Jack Black in the audience and/or talking to Bill C. after the show.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but I think that was more of a shmooze-with-Dan-K kinda thing. Although I don't doubt Jack Black likes (Smog) all right. Jason Lee was also on the guest list that night but didn't show.

I was appalled to learn that Joy Division inspired Moby to start making music.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 May 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a picture of Stephen King wearing a Marah T-shirt (great rock n roll band from Philly) and in one of his recent books he makes reference to "Gimme Back My Dog," a great song from a great band from Texas called Slobberbone.

Bobcat Goldthwait really likes the replacements.

Jennifer Aniston is apparently (my wife told me this) wearing an MC5 t-shirt in the opening credits of at least the last few Friends episodes this season. (I don't know if they had the same opening credits sequence all season or not.)

Tim Ellison, Friday, 7 May 2004 05:49 (twenty-two years ago)

"i saw marilyn manson at a Peaches gig once"

that's not surprising at all. manson may not be a hipster exactly, but his trashy pseudo-performance art schtick is not too far off from that of peaches, just aimed at a more suburban audience. (not that i personally care much for either).

"Jennifer Aniston is apparently (my wife told me this) wearing an MC5 t-shirt in the opening credits of at least the last few Friends episodes this season. (I don't know if they had the same opening credits sequence all season or not.) "

probably one of those levi's tie-in shirts they were doing.

Famous Duran Duran fans you may or may not already know about:

Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of "South Park", friends of Nick's)
Brandy (famously raved on backstage in 1995)
Kyan Douglas ("Queer Eye"'s hygiene guy -- maybe duh... ?)
Oasis (straight from supercool fan Jemiah's site, apparently "written by Linda aka Spitting Kitty" so blame her, Ned: "Ha ha ha. Here's my favorite. Okay, so Oasis loves to rag on Duran except, OOPS! They said really terrific things about the band when 'What's the Story' was first released. They, of course, totally recanted when they got big. You know, 'cos Duran is so uncool. Not. By the way, what park bench is Liam living under these days?")
Jonathan Davis (Korn) (Was going to work on remixes with the band ca. 2000's Pop Trash, namely on one of my personal favorites, "Playing With Uranium", but plans fell through.)
Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal (No Doubt -- maybe duh... ?)
Beck (seen at a recent Duran gig; Nick is a huge fan of his, FYI)
Andy Warhol (Quote from him: "I masturbate to Duran Duran videos.")
Ben Stiller (Also credited to "Linda aka Spitting Kitty": "Caught him backstage at N(B)O [Neurotic (Boy) Outsiders, i.e. mid '90s side project featuring members of DD, Guns & Roses, and the Sex Pistols] concert in New York City. He could be a Guns and Roses fan for all I know but.... A) He's VERY cute and incredibly nice and therefore, a Duran fan in my book and B) Ben Stiller/ guns and roses? Please.")
Jennifer Aniston (True blue; claims her first crush was on SLB and Brad Pitt delighted her at his last birthday by dressing as SLB and doing a karaoke version of "Wild Boys". Possibly duh... ?)
Lostprophets (Totally duh, since they did take their band name from a Duran live bootleg and all. Have even admitted it in interviews.)

Franz Ferdinand's Alex Karpanos has also admitted love for those Boys From Birmingham in an interview, but I don't think this is so much "unlikely" as "See, see? Another sign that FF are so the rightful heirs to the Duran crown!" Which is true, since their current sound is very "1981 debut album".

Those Beautiful Lines (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 7 May 2004 06:43 (twenty-two years ago)

(Spelling correction -- Alex Kapranos, not whatever I spelled the name as before. Ack. I'll learn someday.)

Those Beautiful Lines (Dee the Lurker), Friday, 7 May 2004 06:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Maybe not all that unlikely after all, but here's John Lydon when receiving his Q magazine Inspiration Award in 2001: "I'd like to say hello to Kate Bush [also in attendance], thank you, your music is fucking brilliant."

OleM (OleM), Friday, 7 May 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen Graham Linehan (writer of Father Ted and Black Books) at Boredoms/Lightning Bolt and Go Between's gigs.

lukey (Lukey G), Friday, 7 May 2004 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Peaches was also spotted at a Marilyn Manson gig. She was the support act.

One of Gas Huffer did a painting for Chelsea Clinton at her request. I think it was of her father but I could be wrong

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 May 2004 08:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel Radcliffe is a Delgados fan. Which scares me, cos that's another thing we have in common. I don't want to have stuff in common with Daniel Radcliffe, but I have. Seriously, if he fucks up his second year at university, I am calling the police...

The Sherman Hemsley-Daevid Allen saga has got to be *the* all-time top stranger than fiction lunatic story in r&r history.

kjoerup, Friday, 7 May 2004 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Which brings us to Steve Davis and Magma/Soft Machine/Hatfield & The North etc etc, but that was mulled over in some detail on here a few weeks back

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 7 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it's been near-20 yesars since Metallica were my favourite band (& 15 yrs since their last decent album), and I've NEVER liked Joe Satriani at all, but I was still somewhat surprised to see Joe and Kirk Hammett enthusing about Coltrane in some guitar magazine.

wasn't Norm from Cheers a massive Husker Du fan? I'm sure I rememeber reading an interview with him in the NME in the late 80s...

Ian Rankin is a big Stones fan, as evidenced by some of his book titles, but his latest paperback also reveals a love of Mogwai.

Imagine my surprise at the launch of the posthumous Joe Strummer & the Mescaleros album to find myself stood next to Damon Hill...

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Friday, 7 May 2004 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Norm from Cheers is also a big Wayne Kramer fan, he talked about WK when he appeared on some British tv show a few years ago. Less unlikely than Husker Du I admit.

The Shatner is also apparently a fan of the 'Bone.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember, back when he was still front-runner for the Democratic nomination, Howard Dean told reporters that his favorite song was Wyclef Jean's "Jaspora"? I miss then.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Norm from "Cheers" a big fan of Husker Du??? Really? If he was graced with such taste, then why did he appear in MJ's video for "Black or White"?

Metallica like Suede.

The BBC's Jeremy Vine is a massive Joy Division and British Sea Power fan.

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I was somewhat surprised that Gina Gershon knew who Girls Against Boys were, let alone liked their music. She stuck me as someone who exclusively listen to crap like Norah Jones and Lenny Kravitz....but y'know, that's just me being a judgemental fuck again, I suppose.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 7 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-two years ago)

If he was graced with such taste, then why did he appear in MJ's video for "Black or White"?

gotta pay the bills, man.

i saw dinosaur jr. on the green mind tour in los angeles and i looked over at one point at the guy immediately to the left of me and it was Tim Meadows of SNL... I guess that's not super-"unlikely" but it was kind of a bizarre moment.

Whomever said Drew Barrymore upthread... you realize she was engaged to the guitarist from Hole and dated the singer for The Strokes and basically shows up at any popular alternative band's show in LA?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 7 May 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a big fan of wither band, but i remember seeing a picture or video of jon bon jovi wearing a godfathers t-shirt. it struck me as quite odd.

plus, john mayer clains to be a huge fan of stevie ray, buddy guy, an dother blues greats. too bad not an ounce of their coolness comes out in his music.

Going way back in time to the "Siamese Dream" tour - I spotted Ione Skye seeing The Smashing Pumpkins, sorry I was young.

Not a big fan of wither band, but i remember seeing a picture or video of jon bon jovi wearing a godfathers t-shirt. it struck me as quite odd.

Yeah, I've seen that pic. I think it has more to do with Jon often likening his band to a ::;cringes::;; "rock'n'roll mafia" than with the band (and, frankly, it ain't like the Godfathers were some underground sensation. "Birth School Work Death" was kind've a minor hit that actually got played on the radio). If we're talking about the same picture, the Godfathers t-shirt in question features the band's logo and picture of a gun-toting mobster, not a pic of the band. He may just like the word "godfatherrs," y'know?

That said, I do remember a snipped of Bon Jovi's episode of "Behind the Music" wherein Jon says that a friend of his once played him The Dead Boys, and him saying "it was cool, but I didn't really get it." Clearly.

About a month ago, my mom had me stay home sick. I was actually listening to the Howard Stern show, it was the best thing on. I didn't feel like watching the new. An update on Festival of Dreams (this is taken from Henry Potts' website--Henry is a pretty knowledgable Yes fan):

http://www.bondegezou.demon.co.uk/wnyesm.htm#anderson

"Anderson has written lyrics for Festival of Dreams, a 'funk-rock' opera by actor Sherman Hemsley. In an interview (23 Mar 2003), Hemsley said, "I write music, which people don't know. The show would be a monster, but I can't get anyone to take it seriously, because they only see me as George Jefferson. We're trying to get it going. All we need is one producer." In another (30 Mar 2003), he said, "Jon's taking the music I've written and [is] putting it into 15-minute segments. We've been trying to get this thing happening for three years now" and was reported to be trying to get Anderson to Atlantic City for rehearsals on 6 Apr. In a Jul interview, Anderson claimed to have "written a rap opera, which will see the light of day one day," which may or may not be a reference to the project with Hemsley. In the iO Pages interview, he again refers to this "rap opera" as something written a decade ago but to be released "soon"."

Why did [Norm from "Cheers"] appear in MJ's video for "Black or White"?

"first come, first served" as they say. when i got there, i was like 400th in line, and wondered if i'd even get inside or not. they sit 6 people at every table. since i was by myself, there was a table in the front row that had only 5 people in it, so, they sat me there. it was awesome, i was about 5 feet from michael mcdonald! i sat next to 2 groups of people. one guy (with some broad), claiming he was danny devito (but he wasn't short enough or funny enough to be him), and a group of 3 nice "housewife" types. they asked me before the show what my 3 "desert island" cd's would be, and being an asshole, i said, "how would you be able to play cd's on a desert island with no electricity?". they later, between themselves, asked each other who the 3 guys they could be stranded on a desert island would be (with no surprise, no husbands of theirs were mentioned), one of them said "mel gibson (generically understandable), billy joel (!!!!!), and michael mcdonald(!!!!!!!!!!). it made no sense to me at all. so, back to michael mcdonald, he was on tour promoting his new cd of motown covers. i didn't care what he was going to sing. his voice is so awesome, he could even sing hatebreed or limp bizkit songs, and i'd think he was awesome. he sounded unbelievable! he did some doobie brothers songs, some of his solo songs, and some motown ones (stuff from marvin GAYe, stevie wonder, etc). he sounded better than i expected. he has easily one of the most unique gay voices ever. his band was really good as well, they were all from other bands that i never heard of, but, supposedly, they're well known musicains. by the end of the set, he did "taking it to the streets", and a whole bunch of civilized middle aged people rushed the stage. he totally fucking kicked ass all night. i highly recommend seeing him.

ten months pass...
Andre 3000 also likes the Ramones, the Buzzcocks

I read in EW that the was the basis for Hey Ya, which does sound like something the Buzzcocks could've done. Maybe not lyrically, but the retro-60's vibe to it is there.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 21 April 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I think "Hey Ya" kinda transcends the Buzzcocks, all due respect to Shelley and company of course. I don't think Shelley would ever sing "AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT AHRIGHT", unless he was using a delay on his vocal mike.

Then again, maybe Andre was intending the same but forgot his delay pedal on the day he had to lay the vocals down, so he just improvised delay.

You're obviously forgetting the trail-out of "I Believe",....

That's the song I had in mind, too! "I Believe" is my favorite Buzzcocks' song, actually. but Shelley is repeating a line, not a word. Anyway, point taken. :)

i was quite astonished when i heard that brad pitt was a big fan of nick drake.

Jennifer Jason Leigh is a big X fan. She contributed a blurb in the liner notes to their Beyond and Back anthology about how she always has 2 or 3 of their cds with her when she's on a movie set.

Elton John likes The Fall

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

he was bigging up Mylo in every interview he did when promoting his last album.

Bill Oddie is a massive Prince and p-funk fan, The Funky Gibbon was his homage to George Clinton.

And as mentioned above Axl Rose was a huge PSB fan, November rain was his (miserable) attempt to write a PSB style song.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of these mentions may be surprising. Some of them may not be. I'm just going to bring forth all of them without prejudice and let you decide. In other words, this is an update from the above.

(BTW, not exactly "fan"-related, but a band-related article that's surprising in its content and focus.)

Okay, so David Bedingfield (and The Bravery, but they don't fit this thread's requirements) have both been tapped (and have accepted the invite) to be Duran's openers when My Favorite West Midlanders play on their home turf at St. Andrew's football grounds on May 28. Hello? (I'm wondering if this counts, BTW. I won't know officially if this means he's a fan for awhile.)

New famous Duran fan addition (might not be surprising): Christina Applegate Was seen praising the band after an L.A. concert date in July 2003.

I have also come to find out that Deftones ARE real Duran fans and not the opportunists I marked them out to be when they participated in that weird ska/punk Duran tribute album in '97. So HUGE pats on the backs of those guys.

Oh! And did you know that Neil Gaiman wrote a bio on DD back in the early '80s? It's something he kinda likes to keep secret, though he's stopped short of completely ripping on the band.

I don't know if she was necessarily a fan or not, but apparently Allison Anders has this thing for John Taylor; it's why he scored Mi Vida Loca and co-starred in Sugar Town. Also, some of Cheap Trick attended one of JT's birthday parties; this could just be because they're pals, though. (OT: I like Cheap Trick. They certainly have nothing to be embarrassed about.)

Scissor Sisters were apparently quite happy to open for Duran during their 25th anniversary (of existence, not of recording) gigs in the UK back in 2003. You can even see Ana Matronic raving on about the experience in the special DVD attached to the "limited edition" Astronaut release.

I think Elisabeth from the second (?) "Survivor" (the one who's now on "The View") was interviewed about her musical tastes ca. the time period when she was appearing on "Survivor" and she mentioned being into DD. (This could be surprising considering how young she is... but then again, look at me. *laughs* I'm younger than she is by a few years!)

I personally sold Sherman Hemsley some Material and Gong records at the old Sherman Oaks Moby Disc circa '89-'90. cool guy !

-- Brad Laner (b...), May 11th, 2004.

This has to be the strangest ILM post I've ever read. Brad Laner of Medicine? Working at the Sherman Oaks Moby Disc? Where I actually bought an Electric Company LP one time (possibly from Brad Laner himself)? Selling Gong records to Sherman Helmsley in Sherman Oaks? I have to go to bed now.

Bill Drummond for one. Peter Green fan too, his chapter on meeting his idol in 45 is one of the funniest and most heartbreaking pieces of music writing ever.

Michael Gira was at the Eurythmics show at the old New Roxy in 1990. He seemed to be enjoying himself. In a Michael Gira kind of way.

Figuring out surprising fans of Japan/David Sylvian.

It always amazed me that Anthony Reynolds from Jack worships Sylvian to the extent of bringing people home and making them watch Japan and Sylvian bootleg videos!

Yep. He's also a Magnetic Fields fan.

Surprising Japan/David Sylvian fans? Well, it was Sylvian who inspired Thom Yorke's first forays into the bleach cupboard.

Chalk up Vincent Gallo in the prog-rock obsessives column, in this case Yes.

In one of the first issues of Revolver, before it got really bad, the RZA is quoted as saying something along the lines of, "I like Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Yes--all that crazy white shit." Sort of blew my mind when I read it.

rugged footwear, Saturday, 23 April 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

If more people referred to Yes as "crazy white shit" as opposed to "prog," I'm dead sure they would rule the fucking world right now.

I guess I could *sorta* see how Thom Yorke might've gotten some inspiration from David Sylvian, but, well, yeah, that is kinda surprising. The Sneaker Pimps mention, OTOH -- whoa. Mindblowing. Really.

(Addition: Def Leppard have said some very nice things about DD. The two bands are friendly with each other.)

It always amazed me that Anthony Reynolds from Jack worships Sylvian to the extent of bringing people home and making them watch Japan and Sylvian bootleg videos!

Okay, first of all, who is Anthony Reynolds (yes, I know, "from Jack", but I've yet to hear of this group!), and what can I do to become friends with him? *laughs* Actually, I can use the power of Google for the former, but the latter... ?
