End of a half-decade: ILM kinda official Top 100 Albums & Tracks Poll - VOTING OVER (thank heavens)

*********VOTING IS NOW UNDERWAY *******

Cast your vote at http://www.base58.com/ilx/ilm/form.html

Closing date Mon 16th August at 12pm BST

************************************************ ok you know how much i like to do this shit. and what i am proposing here is slightly more novel than usual.

i want as many ILMers as possible to nominate ONE album and ONE track (doesn't have to be a single) HERE on this thread.

both must have been either recorded this decade or released for the first time this decade in some form (inc. emmpee3 only).

you can only nominate ONE album and ONE track.

you MUST post your choices here for them to be included...

and THIS is the most important bit. Any album and any track can only be nominated once. So if you see someone else has already nominated what you would pick you should choose something else.

this is a chance for ILM folk to assess the first five years of the 00s musically and put all those other polls to....more shame? and if people don't participate then i will just fill it up myself, and we all know that can't be allowed to happen...

the closing date for nominations is MONDAY 2 AUGUST 2004 at 12 PM BST

when the nominations have been collected we will have a certain number of albums and a certain number of tracks, possibly other 100 in each case (possibly not - if so then the top 50 or however many posters on ILM on the day of closing will have an opportunity to name another album and track).

ILM will then be able to choose their TEN favourite albums and tracks from the list of nominees in order. the choices will be calculated up to present a final top 100 albums and top 100 tracks, to be published hopefully by the end of August 2004.

got that? ok go...or have a think, you have well over a month to decide...

REMEMBER - DON'T NOMINATE SOMETHING THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN NOMINATED!!!
AND IF IT'S NOT LISTED HERE AND ISN'T GENUINE IT WON'T COUNT!!

choose WISELY...

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago)

J0hn you glorious musical monarch please choose another album

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I was worried about posting so rashly and instinctually rather than pondering slowly over the next month, but I realized that A) my choices are solid & I am comfortable with them, B) somebody would have posted "Toxic" eventually anyway, so at least this way I get nanny nanny boo boo rights.

chris herrington (chris herrington), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 18:27 (twenty years ago)

hey stevem, do mixes and compilations count as "albums"?

trickydisco - good question...i would say yes to mixes as i am hoping someone will nominate Cassette Boy's 'Parker Tapes'...i suppose this means things like the 2 Many DJs CDs are eligible too...

butif you want to nominate a standard compilation for your album please keep it to something featuring recent tracks (no point having for example one of the spat of new wave/death disco comps in here really is there? Now 57 or whatever would be silly as well - i dunno, just use common sense here)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Stevem, what're you gonna do once you reach 100?

there's no limit to the number of nominations other than the closing date (Monday August 2nd) - what would be great is if we ended up with around 200 albums and 200 tracks to choose from.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:42 (twenty years ago)

I would like to thank all of you that are making me feel Desaparecidos should chart nicely on this thing (and making me glad I didn't nominate Good Charlotte).

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 23:45 (twenty years ago)

The Desaparecidos album is sort of an occaisonal pleasure of mine also, but at other times I can't help but find it awkwardly laughable.

Is anyone else shocked Basement Jaxx have zero mentions so far? Did we turn against them recently when I was away?

MESSAGE FROM MR FASCIST ORGANIZER: you will have the opportunity to change your nomination via a brief window just after the official closing date (which may be brought forward a little due to popular demand or something) which remains August 2 for now. thanks to all so far and keep them coming. delighted to see things like 'Carnaval' getting in there, but where art the Jaxx indeed. and i notice no-one has picked a Streets track or 'Work It' yet.

Dr. Annabel Lies (Michael Kelly), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 03:30 (twenty years ago)

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:37 (twenty years ago)

The whole 'let someone else nominate [widely beloved artist/single], imma nominate my own pet obsession instead' thing could prove problematic. I think only three of my personal top 10 albums that I could think of right now have been nominated so far, and only two of my singles. And it's not like my tastes skew that unpopular.

minolta (minolta), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

That's why I nominated Kish Kash - I didn't want it to miss out due its own popularity (selfless I). Now can someone nominate "Discovery" or Mu's album in return.

Jedmond (Jedmond), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 06:28 (twenty years ago)

pete b. (pete b.), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:44 (twenty years ago)

I am not a mandible (Barima), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 08:46 (twenty years ago)

sorry to be pedantic, stevem but i don't think the jandek should be in the album list as matos already changed his vote before. either that or the lifter puller or the luomo should go.

Hmmm.

What to do, what to do.

Should I check my IP address against yours/mine?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

No, I'm pretty sure I'm not you. We saw some different bands at ATP for starters, some of which were on at the same time.

On this basis, I think we may well be different people.

Does anybody know both of us and can confirm this?

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:17 (twenty years ago)

but you need to pick another LP anyway mei, cos McLusky was already named by someone else first

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:23 (twenty years ago)

non-regular posters may be viewed with suspicion.

think i will be moving the deadline forward...one day the thread will be locked and that will be it! from then on some alterations may be made and the actual voting will begin (prob within a 2 week period only). so maybe it will all be done and dusted by the beginning of August now.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:38 (twenty years ago)

The Desaparecidos album is sort of an occaisonal pleasure of mine also, but at other times I can't help but find it awkwardly laughable.

B-b-b-but that's exactly *why* it's great! Conner Oeberst is to angst what Jay-Z (circa "The Blueprint") is to arrogance...he takes it to such absurd extremes that it ceases to be just whiny and becomes hilarious. Bright Eyes are best appreciated as a comedy band (Desaparecidos have a bit more going for them, admitidely.)

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:49 (twenty years ago)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I would've nominated Richard X Barima if you had not; alternatively I might have done Kaleidoscope seeing as how the UK didn't get it until Feb 2000 so, y'know, please someone else yes thanks.

song: Bump & Flex = 'Promises'

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:35 (twenty years ago)

Album: The Scissor Sisters - Scissor Sisters

I've noticed that they aren't discussed as much as they were a year ago today, though. Do we hate it when our friends become successful?

I'm tempted to do Basement Jaxx or Goldfrapp for singles (Red Alert? Black Cherry?), but I fear "wasting" my vote.

Song: Fosca - It's Going To End In Tears (All I Know)

Discussion was generally negative when last I remember the band being discussed, but this song betrays none of that "shamelessly retrograde" twee-pop that others seem to find so abhorrent. And at any rate, I quite enjoy Fosca regardless of the song.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Album - Wrangler Brutes 'Wrangler Brutes'

That is an EXCELLENT FUCKING CHOICE.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago)

a joke band with some very fine tunes, musically speaking, perhaps I should've made that clear first. But if your appreciation of Oberst's lyrics/shtick is totally unironic, Anthony, that gives me the ph34r.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 20:28 (twenty years ago)

non-regular posters may be viewed with suspicion.

stevem, does the "m" stand for "RUMSFELD"??!?!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

But if your appreciation of Oberst's lyrics/shtick is totally unironic, Anthony, that gives me the ph34r.

the acoustic songs on Lifted are a bit much (esp. the opening track and "Waste Of Paint"), but I have my emo side yes I do indeed.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:04 (twenty years ago)

but I have my emo side yes I do indeed.

So do I, but I fail to see how this has to destroy the comedy aspect, I mean, I relate to "I'm Bored" by The Bonzo Dog Band, too, but I don't think ppl would get offended at me calling *them* a comedy band. Oberst is really good at showing (and reveling in) the absurdity that angst can lead to (and reveling in it, of course) is all I'm sayin'.

um, why hasnt ANYONE voted for tessio?

todd swiss (eliti), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:29 (twenty years ago)

Harshaw, you can hardly call Anima a single; it isn't even catalogued as one by Mille Plateaux. It is only one track, still, so you're nomination is valid, I guess. Or should we go into semantics and argue whether an album consisting of only one track really counts as a "track"?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 28 June 2004 07:54 (twenty years ago)

Nah, I call foul on the Anima thing, it clearly subverts the spirit if not the letter of the rules.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:38 (twenty years ago)

It's a single CD track. It doesn't matter whether it can be considered a "single" or not.

Josh Love (screamapillar), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 14:57 (twenty years ago)

I've been attributed with LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - YEAH, when in fact I nominated Luna, Astonaut.

BELLE & SEBASTIAN - THE STARS OF TRACK AND FIELD

As Mig pointed out upthread, this came out in the 90s. Neb Reyob needs to renominate a song.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:12 (twenty years ago)

Even though, in order of, well, order, Mei should probably get the chance to make a 2nd choice, I will gladly take another shot and nominate the Exploding Hearts' Guitar Romantic as my album choice.

Maciej Kasperowicz (Maciej), Wednesday, 30 June 2004 17:26 (twenty years ago)

My nominations.

Track: "Blood On Your Hands"

Weren't Machina and Machina 2 both nominated? They are different releases.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 1 July 2004 02:40 (twenty years ago)

don't think so. Neil's second post corrected his first.

I am surprised nobody's nominated any Björk as yet.

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 1 July 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago)

no bootlegs/mash-ups either

Le Tigre was actually from 1999, but seems like it should be an honorary aughties choice, being that it came out so late.

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 2 July 2004 03:27 (twenty years ago)

Can somebody nominate something by Spiritualized?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 2 July 2004 03:44 (twenty years ago)

Nothing good this decade. Sorry Barry.

Picard Maneuver (Leee), Friday, 2 July 2004 04:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh well, I realize I am in the minority with statements like "'Let It Come Down' is soooooooo much better than 'Ladies and Gentlemen...'", and this is why I didn't nominate it myself (there's no point if I'm the only one who would have voted for it).

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 2 July 2004 05:55 (twenty years ago)

due to the proposed outage the deadline for nominations is now MONDAY 26 JULY NOON BST

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 July 2004 09:14 (twenty years ago)

Good.

Barry - I'll vote for it if someone nominates it. But I doubt I'll nominate it myself.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 16 July 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago)

Dude, I totally didn't choose that LCD song. It's ok I guess but I like Astonaut by Luna a lot better. It's a really good song and the guitars sound like a better New Order.

danh (danh), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:08 (twenty years ago)

Don't make me take the insane step of emailing you about this.

danh (danh), Friday, 16 July 2004 14:09 (twenty years ago)

peter smith (plsmith), Friday, 16 July 2004 18:15 (twenty years ago)

Song: Sean Paul - Get Busy

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

And I'll make a public plea for someone else to nominate "Hot In Herre".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:28 (twenty years ago)

God, I can't think of a fucking single.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

God, I shouldn't have posted that just then.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 17 July 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for the Exploding Hearts nom, Maciej.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Saturday, 17 July 2004 02:14 (twenty years ago)

Melissa W (Melissa W), Saturday, 17 July 2004 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Pete Scholtes reminds me that 'Trust' is Low's best album ever, and I should have voted for it...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 17 July 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Album: Jonny Greenwood - Bodysong OST
Song: Idaho - Dum Dum

Song - "Seventeen" - Ladytron

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 17 July 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago)

The first Steve Malkmus album, and Out of Time by Blur

myalterego, Saturday, 17 July 2004 12:29 (twenty years ago)

Oi - no cheating.

there will be a chance to change nominations between 26/7 and 30/7.

This proposed change of mind window could be problematical if other people say "Well if that's no longer there then I'm changing my nomination to it", setting off a whole cascade of chaos.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 17 July 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Given that we've hardly got an unworkably large list to choose from so far, wouldn't it be better just to let everyone have one more pair of nominations?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 17 July 2004 12:40 (twenty years ago)

How come there's no Thirsty Ear or Tzadik or Hopscotch downtown NYC jazz stuff on this list? Where are all those avant-garde jazz fans when the chips are down?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Saturday, 17 July 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Song: "Amazing" - George Michael

frankE (frankE), Saturday, 17 July 2004 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Oh, fuck it -- song: "two months off" by underworld.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Saturday, 17 July 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

N.E.R.D. - IN SEARCH OF… (SAMI PLEASE RE-NOMINATE)

Ok, so my votes goes to Miss Kittin "I Com"

Sami (Sami), Saturday, 17 July 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

There's already far too much good shit here already. I'll throw in a random X for Xcellence:

Album: Devin the Dude "Just Tryin' ta Live"
Song: Basement Jaxx and Diz: 'Lucky Star'

At this point it's become more about looking for things that AREN'T nominated that I can think of off the top of my head.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 17 July 2004 22:42 (twenty years ago)

Song: "Trinidad/I Shall be Released" by Calla (from Custom: the Remix Project)
Album: Things we Lost in the Fire by Low

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 17 July 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

Sticking with my choices, but anyone looking for someone to nominate... no Cat Power at all, as of yet (two albums in the '00s), and anyone wanting to nominate that last Constantines album would make me smile broadly for a week. Ditto Heart by Stars.

David A. (Davant), Saturday, 17 July 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

oh. in that case...

Album: Cat Power - You are Free

frankE (frankE), Saturday, 17 July 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

No nominations for the screwed "Cadillac on 22's" either. If no one nominates that, I'll change my singles nom.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 17 July 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago)

frankE, good call ;-)

It's times like these where in the past I would've jumped onto AMG to check if Labradford have put out anything of note during the Noughts, but, well, you know.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Monday, 19 July 2004 05:19 (twenty years ago)

pete b. (pete b.), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:42 (twenty years ago)

So.. so I don't exactly understand what happens after this stage...

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:50 (twenty years ago)

After the nominations are collected there will be a 10 year 'cooling off period' that will allow us all to properly take in and analize all the choices.

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 19 July 2004 09:54 (twenty years ago)

And then, after an infinite number of years has passed, we compare our lists to the Test of Time.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I'll resubmit:

Single: Cosmos - Take Me With You
Album: Lambchop - Nixon

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 19 July 2004 10:54 (twenty years ago)

cheers Matt

what happens after next Monday:

there is a window in which people can change their nominations - people will have to check the thread to make sure their new nom has not already been made in exchange for something else. i'm confident it will all work out. the window will close a week on FRIDAY.

the voting process will begin pretty much straight away after that (maybe the following Monday) - details of how to vote will probably be posted sometime this week (maybe even today - i have a system worked out). Voting period will probably be two weeks (but extended if not enough are received in that time), then a week of counting and formatting the presentation of the results which will be published hopefully on Tuesday 31 August if not before the BH weekend.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

remember, this will be the best list ever cos ILM dunnit

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:02 (twenty years ago)

Will the vote be canceled if there is a terrorist attack?

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:03 (twenty years ago)

i don't believe the vote constitutes a desirable target for terrorists. blue alert y'all.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:06 (twenty years ago)

26th August would be the best day to publish the results - that's the 4th anniversary of first EVAH ilm thread...

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:08 (twenty years ago)

i'll keep that in mind thanks!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago)

My nomination has been thrown into confusion by the fact that nobody has nominated "Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)". Can I have two track choices instead of a track plus album? :(

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 19 July 2004 17:54 (twenty years ago)

well the Big & Rich album is probably going to do well enough itself by the sound of things. i'm surprised you went for Alcazar tho, nice as it is. of course stuff like 'Intro Inspection' and all the other mash-ups plus about another half a dozen excellent Sugababes and SEB songs are up for grabs hint hint

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 19 July 2004 18:54 (twenty years ago)

(after extensive testing of continuing impact of Furnace Room Lullaby, Fool No More, etc)

Song: Gareth Gates - Unchained Melody
Album: Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 03:45 (twenty years ago)

Album: Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

thank you thank you thank you. there are now 10 albums i can vote for.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 07:46 (twenty years ago)

SOMEONE PLS NOMINATE KITTENZ AND THE GLITZ OK THX BYE!

Also haha no one has nominated either Strokes album yet.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:13 (twenty years ago)

would really like to see things like Shimon's 'Bodyshock' in there as well tho I probably wouldn't vote for it. More Richard X too.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:16 (twenty years ago)

Haha or either Outkast album.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 08:18 (twenty years ago)

that's the problem - loads of people would surely vote for Outkast. i was thinking of just adding like another 50 tracks and albums to choose from when the noms are done - using old ILM threads of the last 3 years as the source, but is this fair/does it go against the point of this poll based more on what people really love/want to see represented rather than the stuff we all like but just forget more easily?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

the other idea was to ask the top 50 ILM posters to nominate an extra track and/or album which might be fairer tho possibly more complicated. i want it to be a true reflection of ILM taste and view of the 00s at this point mainly.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:11 (twenty years ago)

69 Love Songs was first issued in 1999 and is thus ineligible.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:14 (twenty years ago)

what month was it released? if it was after September '99 i think it can be allowed. it would be ineligible tho if most of the songs on it had been released in some form before then.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:22 (twenty years ago)

I think it was maybe around September, but isn't keeping to the calendar decade less confusing than keeping to an exact five years? There are probably other things from late 99 that people might want to pick, but to have to be faffing around finding out months of release to check seems a bit daft.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 09:40 (twenty years ago)

there are already a few tracks from late '99 nominated which I don't mind because these things tend to be slowburn and certainly for me there was a lot of stuff i didn't pick up on at the turn of the decade for a few months after. i would expect whoever's nominating what to have at least a rough idea of when it came out. i'll be checking every nomination fully for eligibility before the voting begins anyway, woo

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 10:36 (twenty years ago)

please let 69 love songs and le tigre stay. please please please.

The Lady Ms Lurex (lucylurex), Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

It's the end, the end of a half-decade

Almost every time I hear this title, I try to hear the Ramones singing this, a horrible compulsion.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

It's not clever or funny, just annoying.

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

Oh sod it then

"Save A Horse (Ride A Cowboy)"

and I tossed a coin for the album - Wiley. (sorry Daphne and Celeste, yr record is better than 90% of the others listed but hey.)

The Alcazar is my 2nd favourite single this yr, behind SAHRAC.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 06:31 (twenty years ago)

(I will nominate the Daphne and Celeste if 69LS turns out not to be eligible, it's a blindingly consistent record)

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Okay, if I'm still allowed my second shot, I nominate:
Björk - Vespertine

mei (mei), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

(And I vote for Le Tigre to stay too!)

But goddamit, why did I have to vote Bjork when no one else is going to nominate Slipknot, the album that's doing it for me right now :-(

mei (mei), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:37 (twenty years ago)

so nobody has nominated "flowers" by sweet female attitude? :(

scott pl. (scott pl.), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm tempted to rescind my Richard X album nom.

Good point, Scott (where's the Artful Dodger and The Two Craigs' 'Woman Trouble' anyhow).

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 15:42 (twenty years ago)

If you rescind yr Richard X then I will be forced to pounce and have it and then Spray will be left out in the cold and everything will become increasingly knotty and simply slightly hilarious

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

LP: Ellen Allien - weiss.mix
song: Xtina feat. Redman - "Dirrty"

(if you still need real e-mail addresses, stevem, you can find mine here.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Haha, swapsies!

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Hey, if you want it, maybe I should hold onto it...

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago)

oh yes, and can someone plz take Huey's hint and nominate Murcof kthx bye

Jeff W (zebedee), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:35 (twenty years ago)

I was just foolin', Alex, I have another album in mind.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:03 (twenty years ago)

If it is One Touch then I kiss your jumper

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:19 (twenty years ago)

All this swapping and changing of minds and allowing 1999 releases shouldn't annoy me, but it does.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:20 (twenty years ago)

has anyone said 'no good advice' or 'the show' yet?
if not can they please at all speed?

does some kind gentle hero plan to compile all the singles onto a cd and then burn/post copies for everyone who wants one in xchange for a small fee? they do? great. i'll have on£ pl£as£.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I SAID NO GOOD ADVICE someone do The Show though yeah. Are we STILL without Kaleidoscope?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to agree with Jaymc

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago)

If it is One Touch then I kiss your jumper

This is kind of funny because I finally got round to buying One Touch on CD and a new jumper 2 weeks ago.

It isn't One Touch sadly, it's far more obscure

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

i was planning to compile the top 100 tracks (and 50 or so tracks from the albums list) - possibly in conjunction with some charidee drive we'll see

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 10:08 (twenty years ago)

(where's the Artful Dodger and The Two Craigs' 'Woman Trouble' anyhow).

sorry dude i think you and my brother are the only people who like this track

it may be worth bearing in mind the 'unwiseness' of nominating something other people are unlikely to vote for at all. tho the final list of who nominated what will be included in the presentation of the results, along with perhaps some individual lists from selected people.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 10:11 (twenty years ago)

Trying to second guess what would or wouldn't be liked by others would be a shame, I think.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 10:13 (twenty years ago)

no more a 'shame' if the track you nominate doesn't get voted for by anyone else

i'm really looking forward to hearing all these tracks mentioned which i don't know tho - hopefully i can find them all on slsk

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 10:34 (twenty years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 10:45 (twenty years ago)

that said, i have no idea who 'common person' (poster that nominated OPM), could be someone's naughty multiple nomination

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:00 (twenty years ago)

still no Electric 6, precious little Eminem and no 50 Cent, not much White Stripes, not as many Neptunes or Timbaland singles as you may think, not much electroclash or indeed 'Rippin Kittin'...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I don't really understand the point of this 'only one nomination per person' thing.

Moan moan moan.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:11 (twenty years ago)

yes alba why are you moaning so much?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I don't know. I'll shut up now.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:15 (twenty years ago)

'only one nomination per person'

i do like this idea altho it would appear that a few things that you might have expected to appear will not because of it. this is interesting tho, and if nothing else one per person with everyone then ranking the choices is a bit more inventive than the usual thing, and more importantly it hopefully re-inforces that the chart represents ILM as a whole's true favourites of the decade so far (to brand it as 'the best' may be unwise given the nature of nominating and voting process). it has certainly been interesting to see who picks what (some people have chosen tactically i'm sure). and of course people don't like OPO, why do you think those threads ALWAYS have people saying 'but X a close second and then there's Y, Z blah blah blah' all the time?

how many nominations would people like tho? i MIGHT give the top 50 posters a chance to add another to the list, but the selection is already approaching 200 to choose from.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:19 (twenty years ago)

Josh can you pick another song (it's already down)? thanks

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 22 July 2004 11:20 (twenty years ago)

Stevem you read my mind, I came here to change my song vote to "Rippin Kittin", probably my favorite of the last five years.

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 22 July 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Can people changing their vote tell us what their original one was so we know whether to renominate it, please?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 22 July 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

Mine's the Richard X album, but I'm still undecided - it's between the first Sugababes and Plus-Tech Squeeze Box - Fakevox and no one else cares about the latter anyway.

sorry dude i think you and my brother are the only people who like this track

Cyanide, you're my only friend.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Thursday, 22 July 2004 18:51 (twenty years ago)

British Sea Power - The Decline Of British Sea Power
McLusky - Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues

Crackity (Crackity Jones), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:14 (twenty years ago)

(x-post)

My original vote was "The Conductor (Thin White Duke Remix)" by The Faint, which I still think KICKS ASS (like most TWD remixes).

Seb (Seb), Thursday, 22 July 2004 19:22 (twenty years ago)

I would love it if someone nominated De La Soul's AOI: Bionix. Just saying.

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 22 July 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Me? If so, I'll change my vote to Our Time by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. If that's already picked, too, I'll go with Nothing Came Out by the Moldy Peaches.

Josh Timmermann (Josh Timmermann), Thursday, 22 July 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

if we still need valid email addresses, i changed mine to what you see now.

adam west (adamwest), Friday, 23 July 2004 04:50 (twenty years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:32 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to be changing my single nomination to "Who's Got The Crack?" by the Moldy Peaches, for what it's worth.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:33 (twenty years ago)

Kaleidoscope STILL hasn't been nominated! I'm not changing, mind, but this needs to be pointed out.

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago)

Dom nooooooooooooo, i would've voted high for that Phoenix track!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:37 (twenty years ago)

"Dom nooooooooooo" seconded, DON'T YOU DARE!

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:38 (twenty years ago)

so it looks like getting everyone to pick five might've been better after all huh?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 09:40 (twenty years ago)

i don't think common_person is a sneaky pseudonym, steve. "he" has posted on other threads and has a website here: http://www.razorviolins.com

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 23 July 2004 10:01 (twenty years ago)

also I see you've assigned the McLusky LP to mei after all, which means Vespertine is still available.

just so everyone knows.

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 23 July 2004 10:10 (twenty years ago)

ok zeb, just hadn't noticed the name before, cheers

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 23 July 2004 10:45 (twenty years ago)

sorry, i'm just having trouble picking one song. i'm not a pseudonym, really.

common_person (common_person), Saturday, 24 July 2004 04:29 (twenty years ago)

I just realized no one voted for "are you that somebody" for the single, then realized that it was released before 2000, then realized that I'm getting old, then realized that I'm a schmuck.
It should still get a nomination.
Carry on.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Saturday, 24 July 2004 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Someone had better pick up Some Girls.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 25 July 2004 04:27 (twenty years ago)

Yes. I saw the repeat of TOTP performance yesterday and the glory of the whole thing hit home again.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago)

Someone should also pick Mary Margaret O'Hara's 'Dream I Had (II)', but I realise that's not going to happen.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago)

I listened to 'Some Girls' almost non-stop on the train on Thursday and am utterly convinced of its greatness. The best British pop single in some many years.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago)

it's the omission of TRUTH HURTS 'ADDICTIVE' that is currently making me think how daft this system is...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 11:58 (twenty years ago)

and it's the knowledge that absolutely no one will even listen to the album I nominated, and therefore no one will vote for it and it's a completely wasted nomination, but really it's the best album and a major achievement in music, but that nobody here cares, that makes me both a bit frustrated and very very happy

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Sunday, 25 July 2004 12:41 (twenty years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 25 July 2004 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Here are a few more suggestions. (I have eliminated anything mentioned on ILM only by me, or only by me and, say, one other person.)

Albums:

William Parker: Scrapbook
Susie Ibarra: Songbird Suite
John Fahey: Red Cross
Cooper-Moore/Assif Tshar: America

EP:

Yo La Tengo: Nuclear War

Rockist Scientist, Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Other notable emissions - anything by Franz Ferdinand, Elbow, Morrissey, any of Will Young's recent singles, "Superstar" by Jamelia...(which I may ask to replace Seven Nation Army if no-one else does the honours)

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

emissions

Pooh-ee indeed.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:34 (twenty years ago)

(except for 'Superstar', which yes, you should replace 'Seven Nation Army' with.)

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Another thing I thought would be on there is a Flaming Lips album, or a better track than 'Fight Test'.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think Luna's Romantica would be on there, but it would probably be my third or fourth album choice if it were.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

haha, emissions may be right rather than omissions.

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 25 July 2004 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Note: I nominated the Scissor Sisters album way back when. So that's already been taken care of.

I should probably nominate Some Girls at the expense of poor ol' Fosca, but I'll resist the temptation.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Sunday, 25 July 2004 16:21 (twenty years ago)

ok, what the hell
track: The Streets - The Irony of It All

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 25 July 2004 16:22 (twenty years ago)

another nomination suggestion: tracks from The Argument, eg Cashout or Argument

common_person (common_person), Sunday, 25 July 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I've realised I have no need for more track nominations to confuse me. What I need is albums - I only have 12 of the ones so far listed, so my choice seems a bit limited. I guess I don't listen to albums much these days.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

Song: Dizzee - 'Vexed'

Album: Futureheads - 'Futureheads'

Venga, Sunday, 25 July 2004 17:23 (twenty years ago)

If nobody votes for Some Girls then I think I am compelled to change my vote to it. Sorry Mclusky.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:07 (twenty years ago)

It's weird that no Air is on there. I still haven't got Walkie Talkie, but I thought it was much liked on ILM. As was 10 000hz, in the face of a public shunning. I would ask that at least 'People In The City' were nominated, but as I said, I really need albums to choose from, not more tracks.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Song: Wire - 99.9
Album: (have we had Last Exit?) Low - Trust

coco, Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Did W.K.'s "Party Hard" really last this long? Didn;t see it on here.

In that case,

Single: Andrew W.K., "Party Hard."

Album: RZA, Ghost Dog OST

Chris O., Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Last Exit is there, yep.

btw. 'I'm A Cuckoo' and 'Stay Loose' apart, 'Dear Catastrophe Waitress' (yuck I hate that title) is not better than 'Fold Your Hands Child, You Walk Like A Peasant'. I wish I had the latter to pick, hint hint anyone who's left.

Alba (Alba), Sunday, 25 July 2004 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I very nearly voted 100th window. Now I'm kind of wishing I had.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:46 (twenty years ago)

I'd divided between kaito's 'special love' and ASMZ's 'this is our punk rock, the rusted satellites gather and sing' for my album and I! cannot! decide! argh.

ahh, fuck it,

album: Kaito, "special love"
single: 'Nsync, "gone"

(not enough nsync love up in this bitch yo.)

cis (cis), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:03 (twenty years ago)

BETTING ENDS!

please CONFIRM your changes to your previous nominations now - you have until Friday to change your mind, and you CAN change your mind more than once before then but the final answer at the end of the week is what goes on the final 'longlist' which remains just short of 200 for now

the list of albums and tracks nominated will be updated and is available for viewing here

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:06 (twenty years ago)

In which case, may I be the first to change my track to 'Some Girls'. This list is crying out for Glitter-Band-stomp with girly vocals.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:12 (twenty years ago)

Can people who are changing tell us what they are giving up, so that we know whether we need to renominate it (dominos, yes)?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:22 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, should have clarified - switch track from "To Hell With Good Intentions" to "Some Girls".

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 26 July 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago)

is letting people change their votes really necessary? it sounds like a huge pain in the arse. right enough theres only about 3 albums on that list that i think are great.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 26 July 2004 20:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm changing my single to "Superstar" by Jamelia.

i have received one set of nominations via sms message, it was sent before noon yesterday (tho i didn't receive it until after that) so i'm going to include it. alix nominates FC Kahuna 'Machine Says Yes' as her track and Ladytron's 'Light And Magic' as her album.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, but what's the next deadline here? It's too much to read back through at this point. We are in the "optional nomination change" part of the process now? (This is complicated.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 10:48 (twenty years ago)

it was supposed to be so eeeeeaaasssssyyyyyy

actually no, it was always going to be complicated, face it. you are correct in your guessing tho. roll on Friday eh? then we can begin teh casting of the votes - i should explain how that's gonna work shortly (prepare to be even more confused, woooo!)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 11:10 (twenty years ago)

ILM in showing true colours non-shocker

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone think the tracks list features too many obscure tracks unlikely to win many votes? (Albums looks okay I think)

Should I add more tracks? Perhaps by taking results from previous ILM polls and lists? Or asking the top 50 ILM posters to nominate an extra track?

Or is it fine as is?

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago)

As I said, I've got no shortage of tracks to choose from - it's the albums that I've hardly heard any of/think are much good.

he, he will still vote tho. he suggested the 'antivote' as well, as in pick a track and album you hate and these would form a separate poll

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:14 (twenty years ago)

Since I am one of the few people in the world to buy that Sun Ra CD (good though it is), and possibly the only person on ILM who cares about Gilbero Santa Rosa hits, I am changing my nominations to:

AlbumJohn Fahey: Red Cross
SingleYo La Tengo*: "Nuclear War (Mike Ladd remix)

*Bleah! It's only good because of the other people involved.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

think the tracks list features too many obscure tracks unlikely to win many votes?
Inevitable, perhaps, since there are necessarily more tracks than albums. Also, not the tracks are singles, which means fewer people are likely to have heard them.
So, adding singles to the track list may be a good idea.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 17:22 (twenty years ago)

I definitely don't know enough of the songs to make a list of ten that I know, much less like.

And albums will also be a struggle.

how do u find that out?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:11 (twenty years ago)

according to the top 50 statscock you are not in it rockist. only #85 just 13 places ahead of me. and please change that most crap of all yo la tengo cover songs ever to a decent album like summer sun. or the one before.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 20:47 (twenty years ago)

I was looking at this: http://ilx.wh3rd.net/users.php?board=2

But I'm not going to fight about it. I'm not sure I should be voting at all.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Wednesday, 28 July 2004 21:09 (twenty years ago)

proposed voting system:

select up to FIFTEEN albums and FIFTEEN tracks from and only from the final list presented (to be published on Friday 30 July 2004), ranked in order of preference e.g. your favourite at #1 and your least favourite of your fifteen choices at #15.

the #1 choice will be awarded 15 points, the #15 choice will be awarded 1 point - you get the gist. If you pick less than 15 for either or both then the top choice will still receive 15 pts and it goes down from there.

to balance things out more an album or track will receive ONE extra point for every additional vote it receives. So if 'Hey Ya' by Outkast gets a vote at #1 and then a vote at #2 in two different people's lists it will then have 30 points in total (15+14+1). If 'Kid A' gets only 5 votes at #1 and 'Hail To The Thief' gets only 10 votes at #2 (for arguments sake) then 'Kid A' will have 79 points and 'Hail To The Thief' will have 149 points, as it would appear to be generally more popular among more people. Hope that makes sense.

Details on how to send votes to come (will set up an online form most likely) - posting them here would be a recipe for disaster i reckon...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:01 (twenty years ago)

15 of those albums! Oh no! I guess we can just stop at 10 if that's all we want to vote for, yes?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:06 (twenty years ago)

(oh yes - you've already said so)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:07 (twenty years ago)

I'm finding myself omitting certain tracks I know are going to get a load of votes

Michael B, Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Yes, tic tac voting.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:34 (twenty years ago)

i would assume nothing re voting - i'm scared nobody will be arsed to vote now!

also i am currently browsing certain ILM threads from which i am thinking of culling people's choices from the past - this may ease the potential dilemma of there not being enough choice for some people, or that the choices are too obscure to them. still undecided tho.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago)

No more additions to the list! Putting Stankonia or Kaleidescope in there when no one has nominated them is gerrymandering of Champions League proportions. What happened to the joy of surprises and upsets?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:43 (twenty years ago)

There's still plenty of good albums there to choose from, however I'm disappointed The Marshall Mathers Album isnt on it. The exclusion of Stankonia and Kaleidescope I can live with.

Michael B, Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago)

The Marshall Mathers album is on it.

Cons to adding stuff from past ILM lists: as DC predictably (;)) describes

Pros: people get to vote for more stuff they actually like = more accurate representation of ILM taste

Adds as much credibility as it loses I think. What a dilemma.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

omigod - i can let oneida's "sheets of easter" slide. no one was gonna vote for that for tracks, anyway. but if i change my votes to all-strokes, is someone gonna come along and rescue i get wet? otherwise, im gonna be paralyzed by indecision for the next 36 hours.

so, lemme make it official.
my nomination of "sheets of easter" is rescinded for the strokes' "last nite".

cmon, somebody - tell me youll pick up the WK slack, or nominate is this it or room on fire.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 29 July 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago)

the #1 choice will be awarded 15 points

I don't like scoring systems with each place being one point apart. It doesn't place enough emphasis on the top albums.
For instance, to borrow the above example, you could have Kid A with 5 votes at #1, and HTTT with 5 votes at #2 and one vote at #12, then there would be a tie at 79 points. But clearly Kid A is the more favoured album here, it should deserve more "credit" for all of those #1 votes.

For instance, the Tour de France awards points on flat stages as follows : 35 for the winner, 30 to the runner-up, then 26, 24, 22, 20, 19 ... 1.

I think this sort of system is much fairer.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:02 (twenty years ago)

All music polls should be modelled on the Tour de France.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:04 (twenty years ago)

That's a good point actually. I like the TDF pts format by the sound of it. The scoring method will be confirmed tomorrow.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Being new here I have no idea if nominating is still on, because I couldn't possibly read this entire thread. So...

Album - Yo La Tengo, Summer Sun
Song - Blonde Redhead, Falling Man

Apologies if these have been voted for already!

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

>>Pros: people get to vote for more stuff they actually like = more accurate representation of ILM taste

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Sorry that was supposed to read:

"Pros: people get to vote for more stuff they actually like = more accurate representation of ILM taste"

This might render the whole poll useless if the majority votes on the tracks you chose. It's like you could've started with saying "I've grabbed the 50 most popular songs and albums on ILM, now everyone vote on them" without anyone nominating anything.

Maybe you could do 2 separate polls? The ILM Elitist Poll, and The ILM Populist Poll ;)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago)

ok ok no additions

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:11 (twenty years ago)

too late piers

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:11 (twenty years ago)

OK, no worries. Maybe um, in the 2010 poll ;)

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:21 (twenty years ago)

please vote tho :)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago)

piers, Thursday, 29 July 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

that's a shame about piers.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

no additions is the right way to go but it's kinda ridiculous that something like HOJL isn't in the singles list.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 29 July 2004 21:51 (twenty years ago)

how'd Bwyd Time' get in there? wasn't that released in 95?

keith m (keithmcl), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago)

Ha ha - I hadn't noticed that. Ambrose/Stevem - explain yourselves!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago)

(or else I'm changing my nomination to Sounds Of Silence)

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

i hadn't checked when it came out but if that's the case then it won't count

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:32 (twenty years ago)

the closing date for nominations is MONDAY 2 AUGUST 2004 at 12 PM BST

so why is piers nomination too late? could you explain that to me, stevem?

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:33 (twenty years ago)

the closing date was brought forward (as mentioned later upthread)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 08:44 (twenty years ago)

that is not very convincing. are there rules to this thingy or is this just a joke? first lots of people change their votes (what's the point?) and then the deadline is brought forward just like that. my inclination to vote has almost dropped to 0.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:10 (twenty years ago)

Alex, the deadline was brought forward weeks ago, not at the last minute.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:18 (twenty years ago)

the point of allowing people to change their vote is a toughie but i think credibility is equally at risk if people had to stick with what they picked first off - given how people change their minds and forget things all the time on ILM when it comes to lists and stuff. if you don't like that fine, but i hope you will still vote.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 09:46 (twenty years ago)

allowing people to change their mind is not a good idea, i think. it changes the parameters for everybody who voted after the person who changes his mind. as suddenly items get delisted people didn't vote for as they assumed they were on the list. this causes unnecessary complications. and somehow invalidates the whole nomination procedure.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:02 (twenty years ago)

Stevem is losing control of the class.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:04 (twenty years ago)

"vote" should read "nominate" in my last post. sorry.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:05 (twenty years ago)

your opinion has been noted.

just sorting out the vote dilly now, won't be too long...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:36 (twenty years ago)

the Diplomatic Service needs you, stevem! :)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago)

and just so you know, only about 7 people have changed their nomination - which is good i suppose tho it suggests it wasn't necessary with hindsight.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:39 (twenty years ago)

that was the daftest thing about this whole crazy idea.

i mean that in a good way stevem ;)

jed_ (jed), Friday, 30 July 2004 10:43 (twenty years ago)

Are we supposed to be sending our votes in, or are we waiting for the final list of nominations?

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

waiting, but not for much longer

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:23 (twenty years ago)

the wait is over.

you should be able to vote now. do so by going HERE - have fun! Any questions, ask here I guess.

Closing date for vote submissions: Monday 16 August, 12pm BST

Thank you.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:43 (twenty years ago)

Thank you for the effort. This should be fun!

peepee (peepee), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago)

kickass points system, steve

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 July 2004 12:51 (twenty years ago)

well you would say that ;) i've come round to thinking it will work pretty well actually

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:00 (twenty years ago)

That's a nice-looking form.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:05 (twenty years ago)

is the voting only for ilm users? or can i link to that webpage on my blog?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Will every selection still receive one point for each extra vote it receives?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:10 (twenty years ago)

yes Barry

Martian, i've just blogged it on NYLPM - i think the vote may as well be open to as many as possible now - so go on with your bad self.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:14 (twenty years ago)

stevem i have just had an excellent brainstorming idea, could you have a separate system in the comments box - for people to list 10 additional albums NOT in the nominations, no fancy points systems - just keep it simple.

i.e have separate category/ award: for the best albums that didn't making the nominations list.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:22 (twenty years ago)

srevem - will you accept ballots in 2 parts or is that too much of a headache for you?

(meaning: I could probably do the LPs ballot right now. But I wanna have a think about the songs ballot and maybe listen to some of them again - slim pickings there, as others have noted; Martian's idea would be more appropriate for the absent songs than absent LPs!!)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:27 (twenty years ago)

doesn't seem worth it really Martian - too much of a 'oh but i love all these as well!' thing which could just devalue the main poll (seems people didn't want stuff added that you would expect to be on there but wasn't picked so similar deal here really)

zebedee - yeah i guess you and anyone else could submit the vote in parts

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:29 (twenty years ago)

but this secret voting system of adding 10 additional choices - will add some excitement, mystery and interest - to the poll results.

Once the results are out people could compare and contrast - the 2 album polls.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:34 (twenty years ago)

SteveM, I expect you'll be getting some dubious email addreses ("Brian@cnn.com" really likes the Boredoms!). What to do when you suddenly get 400 votes for "Atrocious Virgin" by Trance To The Sun? ;)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:43 (twenty years ago)

DJ Martian in statistics fetish shockah. It's all a conspiracy for people who want to add more albums that weren't nominated!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

ha ! beware of web/street teamers and band fanatic websites.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

not really the additional voting/ secret aspect - is a more qualitative judgement of music even though the results would be quantitative

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:49 (twenty years ago)

online polls always problematic/prone to rigging granted so i may have to vet every e-mail address, if not valid then the vote can be discounted. difficult to stop people voting more than once but obviously if the votes are strikingly similar (if not identical) that will be a big clue, and a totally different set of votes from the same person probably wouldn't have too big an impact on the scores if you think about it.

Martian, LEAVE IT!

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 13:58 (twenty years ago)

I'm confused about the decision to open this poll to anyone whatsoever. I thought the point was for it to be an "official ILM poll." (stevem, didn't you check to make sure that the nominations were from ILM regulars?)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:16 (twenty years ago)

Can I put in a plea for NO "scores so far" or indeed ANY HINTS WHATSOEVER about what's doing well before the final results are published. I hate that. k thanks bye.

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago)

bollocks - no Here To Stay. Schoolboy error. Boy, is my face red.

coco, Friday, 30 July 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Can I put a plea for it *not* being on DJ Martian's website, or any other? I agree with jay that it kind of dilutes the point of the whole thing. nyplm is a bit different, since it's the daddy of ILM in the first place.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:35 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was an ILM-only poll too. "ILM kinda official Top 100. . ."

(But whatever. It's not a major issue.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:49 (twenty years ago)

jaymc - i was worried not enough people will vote. i am not sure yet how much more of an increase in voting there will be due to it being mentioned on Freaky Trigger or a few blogs - educated guess = marginal increase.

jeff w - agreed! hints can be fun tho, but i wouldn't want to influence the voting of course, so you can trust me on that.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:52 (twenty years ago)

there are other options such as weighting the votes from propah ILM people more than votes from TEH GENTILES, or something, but i don't think that will be necessary really.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:54 (twenty years ago)

i've asked on the moderator board for the NOMINATIONS PLEASE in the thread title to be changed to VOTE NOW, but not happened yet, bah

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 14:55 (twenty years ago)

Indeed, what constituttes an "ILM person," when many are just 'lurkers' which could be any number of people that we never see posting. So, if someone has only lurked once or twice, what are they? I say let's give those 'swing voters' a chance. If Justin Timberlake shows up too much, though, we may regret it...

Richard K (Richard K), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

IMHO the only regretful thing that voting by non-ILM regulars can lead to is even more bloody indie rock, but whatever, bring it on.

Mind Taker, Friday, 30 July 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

what's this thing against bloody indie rock? when the best of all indie rock bands ever, yo la tengo, doesn't even have an album in the list. summer sun should alone get more points than 99.9% of all albums on the list. there definitely isn't enough indie rock.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:17 (twenty years ago)

7 votes in so far - considering we had just under 200 people nominating it would be great to get 300 voters or more

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:19 (twenty years ago)

7 votes in so far

? Where is the final least of nominations, or do we have to sort that out ourselves?

Pleese spoonfeed.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

least=list

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

http://www.base58.com/ilx/ilm/form.html

I guess you don't have to hate indie-rock to recognise that compared to other genres it is very over-represented on the list. That's not even taking into account weighting for its popularity generally.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Did you say we can't vote for our own nominations? I thought I saw that, but now can't find it.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:46 (twenty years ago)

(xpost)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:47 (twenty years ago)

I knew so few nominations that I voted for everything by Radiohead and voted for two albums that wouldn't make my personal top 100 of the half-decade (Sonic Youth, Hot Snakes) and still I only picked 10 albums. Glad to represent for a few good records though. Had fun with the tracks list and antivote. Cool ballot Steve.

Geez, I wasn't expecting tons of jazz but would one or two records have really fucking killed?

x-post: Oh really? Well, then I'll have to redo mine or possibly withdraw the albums list.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:55 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember anything about not being allowed to vote for your own nominations. That would be ridiculous. I think unless stevem says otherwise to assume that is not the case.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:57 (twenty years ago)

I knew so few nominations that I voted for everything by Radiohead

Gah! I was hoping the SIX track nominations would ensure a split vote and the downfall of mentalist Radiohead fandom. Curses.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:58 (twenty years ago)

sundar, why didn't you nominate some jazz? (Maybe you did even, I haven't paid lots of attention.) I almost nominated Scrapbook.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 16:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I only voted for four Radiohead songs. But I picked all their albums.

I would have definitely nominated some jazz/improv if I could have nominated even a second album (probably Frisell, Douglas, or Ibarra). But with one nomination, you can't really deny drone, you know?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

i was relying on you to nominate sk8r boi, sundar!

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:10 (twenty years ago)

I will be voting just as soon as I can narrow it down. My first impression is that the singles list will be far more difficult to narrow down (which just means it's better, I guess).

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:14 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I came this close to nominating "Sk8er Boi". I kind of regret it. I think I only voted for three Radiohead songs now that I think about it (same as Outkast). There were some painful cases (Fennesz, John Fahey, Amon Tobin) where I love some stuff by the artist but just don't know the particular album on the list, though I'm sure I'd like it if I heard it.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:18 (twenty years ago)

I voted for five albums and ten singles/tracks.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:44 (twenty years ago)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:46 (twenty years ago)

Stars of the Lid

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I am not usper excited about my album choices. Is anyone sharing Lord of The Decks on slsk? Id like to hear that and consider voting for it.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:06 (twenty years ago)

Ghostface: Also regretting voting for a Ghostface album when another one (Pretty Tony by Ghostface) was nominated due to the votes getting split up. Evryone just vote for both Ghostface albums, thanks. Ghostface.

artdamages (artdamages), Friday, 30 July 2004 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Travis: "The Invisible Band"

As for best track, probably "Silent To The Dark" by Electric Soft Parade

New threat from stevem = stop moaning and getting things wrong or all indie-rock is stricken from the list.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:34 (twenty years ago)

I just wanted to say, Stevem, how fucking impressed I am with the setup you've got going here. From one list-making obsessive to another, you are a totalinspiration.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Friday, 30 July 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

I actually remember stevem saying that "Can't vote for what you nominated" -- though I'd like to hear it from himself if that's still a rule or if I remembered wrong.

The Dreaded Rear Admiral (Leee), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:41 (twenty years ago)

If that's true, I take back what I said about not moaning and vote for immediate impeachment.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 30 July 2004 20:44 (twenty years ago)

it would be good that for every time an album gets listed as someone's most hated you would deduct 15 points from it's total.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Saturday, 31 July 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

For albums it's a tie I think between Andrew WK's "I Get Wet" and Girls Aloud's "Sound Of The Underground". Singles-wise it's undoubtedly Missy's "Get UR Freak On", my favourite song ever.

biggest no. of votes for an album: 17 (the current leader)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Sunday, 1 August 2004 22:41 (twenty years ago)

hey stevem you gonna be able to show individual ballots?

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago)

I am such a stat whore. Periodic updates for pointless statistics are appreciated, stevem.

If everyone had been able to nominate, say, five albums and tracks then I think there'd have been more variety.

no doubt, but it would've been more difficult to establish clear preferences i think.

Yes, because then one could skew the results more by voting for their own choices. Of course, the rules could be changed to disallow voting for one's own choices, but the main reason why this wouldn't work is there'd be too many choices. There are already 200 odd picks there, multiply that by five there'd be an ungainly amount of choice that would mainly just confuse things more.

Plus, with only one pick per person, then you are forced to almost exclusively consider other people's faves when making your own list. If I were to make my own personal Best of the Half-Decade List, it would certainly have little ressemblance to what I will submit in this poll. Thus, it really doesn't matter if you've heard of every album/track or only fifteen of each -- because the interesting thing is *which* of those fifteen you know (and it will different for everyone).

These are not complaints aimed at anyone whatsoever, they're just my random musings. Like I said upthread, I'm a big sucker for Top Anything of Anything Lists.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 1 August 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Just curious, will the results only be posted on here or will they be hosted at a seperate site? Would you consider publishing them in an article style format a la (you all can crucify me now) Pitchfork? I think it would be really interesting to hear what the folks of ILX have to say about their picks as well as seeing what the final list is (individual lists may be neat too).

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Monday, 2 August 2004 02:05 (twenty years ago)

Only heard 15 Lps so EASY. Stevem if I suddenly feel like writing something about the Fall record can I add send that later?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 06:31 (twenty years ago)

err...Steve, did you get a half-finished

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 2 August 2004 09:58 (twenty years ago)

oh, bugger.

I've got half a mind to leave that and make it look as if I did it deliberately.

Steve - did you get a half-finished submission with no name on it? That was me.. I clicked on something, and the window vanished, so I don't know if it vanished off to you to be counted or if it was just sucked into another world.

If it didn't come, I'll try again.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:00 (twenty years ago)

hey stevem you gonna be able to show individual ballots?

they're all in my gmail inbox, when the results are published i guess i can include the lists of who voted and for what

will the results only be posted on here or will they be hosted at a seperate site?

probably both, an ILM thread to tear the final list apart will be inevitable anyway but i'm keen on presenting all proper and stylish on my site/space, with mp3s of every track (haha yeah right...) etc.

Stevem if I suddenly feel like writing something about the Fall record can I add send that later?

Absolutely, tho perhaps it would be better to wait and see if that album makes the final 100, as it's comments for each of those i really want

hobart paving: i don't think i have received yours yet so submit again if you can

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:13 (twenty years ago)

Any chance you could email me what I voted for?

I was half-asleep, I have no idea.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 2 August 2004 10:52 (twenty years ago)

By the way, Stevem, Johnny Greenwood's "Bodysong" is a soundtrack/score for a film of the same title, in case it makes the list.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:11 (twenty years ago)

yeh i know

Melissa i THINK you voted Radiohead a lot but i can't be sure...

arf

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, yeah, that's a given.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:23 (twenty years ago)

No changing our votes, right?

I can see some things that need changing, but I won't be overly upset if I can't.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:33 (twenty years ago)

absolutely no changing, you vote it you bought it

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:42 (twenty years ago)

I managed to lose "Discovery" from my poll for a bit, a scary 5 mins that was

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing that it's Discovery inteh lead.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago)

I have high hopes for "I Get Wet" myself

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 2 August 2004 12:23 (twenty years ago)

"wet myself"

radiohead. blinkers. suddenly it all makes sense! ;)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 10:38 (twenty years ago)

Is there a reason that my Ggggates nomination has been PURGED? It can't possibly have been 1999, can it?

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago)

I did wet myself once, only out of laziness tho

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

omg, '69 Love Songs' isn't on there either! i'm sorry Greg i seem to have forgotten to add your nominations to the list. i think a few people might have voted for MF if they'd been on there - not sure about Gareth Gates tho but stil, sincere apologies for this omission.

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

Haha, no worries, the Gareth was always kinda a lost cause. I'm sad about MF/D&C going loveless though :(

Gregory Henry (Gregory Henry), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:18 (twenty years ago)

i think i missed out rockist scientist's noms as well - argh

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:22 (twenty years ago)

I was keeping quiet about '69 Love Songs' not being on there until the nominations were closed, because I disapproved of 1999 releases being allowed on.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:24 (twenty years ago)

Shame there were no Plaid albums.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:26 (twenty years ago)

stevem, No you got mine. I changed them to: Fahey's Red Cross and YLT's "Nuclear War."

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 12:58 (twenty years ago)

After listening to "Nuclear War" again a couple times lately, I wish I had nominated something else. It was hard to come up with a track/single I really cared about that anyone on ILM would know about and vote for.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:02 (twenty years ago)

The rockist's dilemma.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:17 (twenty years ago)

I know it's very narrow, but the only current singles-oriented music I really care about is salsa (+ some related Latin music). Albums are another matter. There were plenty of other singles on the list that I liked enough to vote for, but I wouldn't necessarily go out and buy copies of any of that stuff (though I might lo-down it). My singles list looks much more like a typical (Old ILM) ILMer than my taste actually runs.

x-post

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago)

(It just occurred to me that DJ Martian could work under the name Meiji Darshan, and I don't know where else to note that.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

my track nomination didn't make the list. what's up with that?

danh (danh), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:03 (twenty years ago)

"Astronaut" is in the tracks list.

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:19 (twenty years ago)

i'm so dumb today

danh (danh), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

69 Love Songs is a '90s album, case closed.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 03:32 (twenty years ago)

I also supposrt the "worst album/track gets 15 points deducted" idea.

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 03:34 (twenty years ago)

After listening to "Nuclear War" again a couple times lately, I wish I had nominated something else.
didn't i tell you that it was rubbish, r.s.?

concerning release years, aimee mann's save me came out in 99. i am glad about it being on the list as i wouldn't have known enough tracks to vote for if it hadn't been nominated.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 09:45 (twenty years ago)

alex, I wouldn't go so far as to call it rubbish--I still think it was prett goood--and I don't remotely trust your opinion anyway. (And everything else I've heard by Yo La Tengo has been rubbish.)

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 11:41 (twenty years ago)

That remix is certainly the weakest track on the ep, had you nominated any of the other tracks I likely would have voted for it.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 12:33 (twenty years ago)

Well I don't agree. I think it's by far the best track on the EP. They all needed to be cut and shuffled around, because otherwise they drag excessively.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 13:47 (twenty years ago)

did you listen to "blue line swinger" for example, rockist? if you don't like that one you can safely say that ylt are not for you.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Something I found myself doing is taking into account the likelihood that someone would vote for a song that would probably be my number 1 pick, but doubting that anyone else would rate it at all and so dropping it down in favor of a songs I'm fairly confident others will vote for. I call this problem TAINT.

Jimmy Carter, History's Greatest Monster (Leee), Thursday, 5 August 2004 05:08 (twenty years ago)

Yo La Tengo should not be painted with the rubbish brush, they're pretty fucking fantastic.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Gear!, you are a treat.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 5 August 2004 05:56 (twenty years ago)

However, I haven't made a serious effort to follow rock music for about a decade now.

-- Rockist Scientist (rockistscientis...), October 4th, 2002.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 06:14 (twenty years ago)

top album sewn up i think, second horse fading now, would be an amazing comeback if it could pull it off...

one album is doing much better than perhaps expected

top track closer but nothing if not predictable...except again one track in the top rungs likely to be considered quite teh shockah wrt to the company surrounding it

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 09:45 (twenty years ago)

Damn, Gear. Rarely does anyone dig up things I said two years ago. I'm genuinely imperssed. I admit I've only heard one YLT album (And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out), although I'm not sure if I actually made it all the way through. I think I may have stumbled across them on college radio from time to time.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:15 (twenty years ago)

There hasn't been much doubt in my mind that Hey Ya! would win the singles vote. The album will probably be Radiohead, Streets/Dizzee, or Strokes.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 5 August 2004 13:46 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ya?? I thought everyone hated Hey Ya, or at least was sick of it.

Maybe the noisy ones prevailed though.

I still think Discovery will win. If Radiohead or the Strokes win then I shall retire from nu-ILM. It's not going to happen.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:21 (twenty years ago)

Uh, the Strokes aren't even nominated, guys.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

Hey Ya?? I thought everyone hated Hey Ya, or at least was sick of it.

This is why I only put it at #3, haha.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 5 August 2004 14:39 (twenty years ago)

well Rockist you should just pick up I Can Hear the Heart Beating As one and learn ye some good YLT.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:06 (twenty years ago)

top album sewn up i think, second horse fading now,
If it's "Kid A" then I will go on TEH RAMPAGE.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:23 (twenty years ago)

the two horse race is back on...

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 15:24 (twenty years ago)

only realized while i was voting that Manitoba's Up in Flames didn't get nominated. I'd have given it a few pts...

frankE (frankE), Thursday, 5 August 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago)

yeh esp. as i think 'Jacknuggeted' has become one of my favourite tracks of the last 5 years

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 5 August 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

so "I Am Extraordinary" is gonna win most hated track easily right?

daziz, Friday, 6 August 2004 06:32 (twenty years ago)

Up In Flames I don't like as much as most people do. Boringly constructed beats, silly xylophone melodies, whatever.

And I hope Yankee Hotel Foxtrot receives all the hate I dedicated in typing time to it. And I hope all those horrid Daft Punk songs disappear.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 6 August 2004 06:35 (twenty years ago)

For what it's worth, the track "Ole" from the Jacknuggeted ep is good. Beats anything on the Up In Flames record.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 6 August 2004 06:36 (twenty years ago)

Stevem, how many votes have you got in now?

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 6 August 2004 06:49 (twenty years ago)

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 6 August 2004 08:47 (twenty years ago)

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 6 August 2004 08:57 (twenty years ago)

Listening to it now for the first time in maybe a year I voted the NERD Lp way too low, I think.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 6 August 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago)

i think it's pretty over-rated and sloppy tho with some nice enough tunes here and there

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Friday, 6 August 2004 12:56 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:35 (twenty years ago)

I don't suppose I could withdraw my vote? I have since listened to two CDs that I voted for, because of the CDs I had heard from the list, they were pretty good. However, after listening to them again lately I decided they aren't even pretty good relatively.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Monday, 9 August 2004 18:40 (twenty years ago)
