August 2004: Who is the best rock band on the planet right now?

I mean I realise there is hardly ever a definitive answer to this question, but along the lines of past greats like the beatles, led zep, floyd, pixies etc. Who holds the temporary title right now?

After seeing a live show two months ago, I'd say Radiohead (still) and maybe the Strokes who knocked me sideways six months back.

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Comets on Fire

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:42 (twenty-one years ago)

You do know you're posting to IM, correct?

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 07:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Based on the concert I saw 5 days ago, Franz Ferdinand.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Do Me Bad Things

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oneida

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah Vic i realise that but i was trying to be inclusive by thinking broadly rather than offering up: Broken Social Scene, Dappled Cities Fly, British Sea Power and Yo La Tengo, though these are some of my faves. Ugh!

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

ILM yeah

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:36 (twenty-one years ago)

well people could say any of these bands...but that rock band doesn't = height of relevancy anymore, 4 starters

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Until I see another live performance as good, based on a show I saw awhile back I'll give it to Sleater-Kinney.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Acid Mothers Temple. Oneida. Comets on Fire are great too: look forward for their first Italian tour.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Embrace, not that anyone on here will believe me, but they're new album is fucking brilliant.

Jimmybommy JimmyK'KANG (Nick Southall), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Gear: did you see them play at the Fonda on the One Beat tour back in Feb of last year ?

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd agree w/ u there - i saw that show (if thats the one you're talking about) and they're probably still whatever one would qualify as being "the best"

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Futureheads

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

yes indeed, and that coupled with their ATP performance seals the deal. I went into the ATP show a more casual fan of the band, I walked out thinking they couldn't be topped.

Gear! (Gear!), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

woo i wonder if i saw you at the fonda that night..probably not, (but if i did and you were 'round here then i'd hope id have inspired my own Gear! thread). my fave moment included their rendition of Fortunate Son

Vic (Vic), Thursday, 12 August 2004 09:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The Streets

And no arguments on whether or not they count as "rock."

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 12 August 2004 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

A predictable and boring answer, perhaps, but I'd have to go with the White Stripes.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd have to be dull and boring and say the white stripes for me too. the libertines also.

splooge (thesplooge), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac.

mei (mei), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Well I feel a bit tendentious, but I am going to say Mayhem. Feel free to disagree.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

oneida, acid mothers, strokes

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac, Oneida, Acid Mothers, Cheap Trick

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

In democratic terms, so far, Shellac are winning. My faith in the world is restored somewhat.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 12 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, i think oneida is winning.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:00 (twenty-one years ago)

4-3 oneida over shellac - bring the ruckus!!!

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:02 (twenty-one years ago)

The Dragons! (This week, anyway)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm always happy to remember the instructions Oneida gave to the sound engineer at their concert in Venice: "It sounds all the same, so turn it up!".

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, marco - i told kid millions "hey from italy" when i saw them in brooklyn.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Next week it will probably be Entombed and Amon Amarth again. And Converge. And Das Oath. And Katatonia. I need some new rock records. That new Comets On Fire didn't do it for me. It wasn't up to my high standards.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess i'll have to get on touch with him soon - we're going to put out a tribute containing a very good contribution from them.
hope they can be back in italy soon.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

TEH HIVES

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:19 (twenty-one years ago)

still the Blood Brothers

Simon H., Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go woth Mr. Snrub except I don't think Mike Skinner is a band. I still heart the Mekons. But the answer's probably Sleater-Kinney. Or Sonic Youth.

Not That Chuck, Thursday, 12 August 2004 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Dappled Cities Fly

wtf you mean they're heard-of outside Sydney? Or are you in Sydney, Piers? Fantastic band either way.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

SY

Rubberband Man (Rubberband Man), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

argh

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:18 (twenty-one years ago)

who is argh, jon? im intriiiiigued.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh is my laptop noise and asian flute project

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:35 (twenty-one years ago)

shellac are mindnumbingly boring, way too old school for me. i hate that clean sound, the bloodless performances, everything tidy and emotionally bottled-up. yuk. i don't care if you pounce on me, but i scream a very big vote for yeah yeah yeahs. not just 'cos i'm female either. "y control" is fantastic... i also like comets on fire, sightings, mouthus...

defensive bitch, Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I wouldn't call Sightings a rock band.
Comets on Fire is Mudhoney without the songs.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Jon, find someone to answer my laptop/monitor question.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Drive-By Truckers or Sleater-Kinney. Or both!

Josh in Chicago (Josh in Chicago), Thursday, 12 August 2004 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac! Mclusky! Giddy Motors!
!!!

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a toss-up between McLusky and The A-Frames.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Comets on Fire is Mudhoney without the songs? That makes as much sense as saying they are "a slightly gayer Sir Mix-a-Lot" or something. And what's with all the Shellac love? Have they been playing shows or releasing stuff since 1000 Hurts? I mean, I like 'em, but the timing is weird.
Does the question mean the best band live?

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

junior senior are a slightly gayer sir mixalot.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i would say fugazi, but i don't think they exist anymore

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac have played frequently and consistently since 1000 Hurts, yes

DJ Mencap0))), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm serious, if take the Mudhoney LP, edit out everything but the guitar solos, you have Comets on Fire's exact sound.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

a frames or country teasers

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:27 (twenty-one years ago)

probably Cheap Trick.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never heard a frames or country teasers. are they really all that, Yanc3y? I need new rock to love.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:28 (twenty-one years ago)

scott you would fucking love both of them! download the teasers from emusic! we've got the best albums up there. a frames you would LOVE LOVE LOVE. http://www.citypages.com/databank/24/1192/article11564.asp

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

don't think the Comets are really interested in writing "songs".

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I will listen to the Teasers. And your a frames review makes them sound like they are right up my alley.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

nobody thinks its the fiery furnaces? i mean, me neither, but i thought someone might.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Which Mudhoney LP? And have Shellac toured, or just done like ATP type shows?

Softly Weeping at the Oki Dog (Ben Boyer), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Definitely the Fiery Furnaces.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 12 August 2004 15:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Until Lemmy is dead and buried, the answer to this question will always be Motörhead. Go buy their new album.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i have never heard a frames or country teasers. are they really all that, Yanc3y? I need new rock to love.

The A Frames are so fucking fantastic I can't put it in words...awesome live as well!

Like early Wire but with sleek american muscle car craftsmanship and power driving Kraftwerk's autobahn or something like that....

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:15 (twenty-one years ago)

here's the a frames record label's site:

http://www.sl.net/~ttbooks/moolala/index.htm

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Shellac isn't playing 15-20 shows per month, but they are out there playing random shows, getting it done.

Shaun (shaun), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

matt, do you have the intelligence cd? if not, GET IT GET IT GET IT

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Jason Forrest/Donna Summer.

Actually, when he performs, he's usually dozens of the best rock bands on the planet.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of these bands are BORING. Can I say Ween? Even if you say no, I'm going to anyway.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread makes me fully realize exactly how little rock music I listen to for the first time in awhile.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

The re-formed Magic Band. Sheer genius.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, I have a serious answer now: The Flaming Lips.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

i think the lips mightve been the best as late as 97 or 98, but i think coynes really fallen hard into this "music man"-parody of himself. they need more danger.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

"August 2004: Who is the best rock band on the planet right now?"

Okey, I do see that the definitive article ain't there... Then again, the capital W is... On the third hand, now that both Moon and Entwistle are gone ...Well, all things considered, the ?uestion mark at the end of the thread title is fully justified, to say the least.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I mean as far as combination of bad-ass live show, canonical status/cultural ubiquitousness, maintained creative integrity goes, they are one of the only rock groups (at least, in America) that stand out to me as worthy of such a lofty title as we're implying here. Certainly moreso than fucking FRANZ FERDINAND.

xpost HA HA

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

they have been around a long time, its true - and they have been doing at worst pretty good stuff for a long time. im just upset about their turn towards maudlin.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, barring any recent disasters, it's still Sleater-Kinney.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's still The Fall.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 12 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Franz Ferdinand or Oneida or Comets on Fire or Supersilent or Bark Psychosis or Liars or Boredoms or Dillinger Escape Plan. Throw them all in on some CD jukebox and blow your mind up.

steve hise, Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm flirting with idea of liking rock again. i quite like what i've heard of that les savy fav comp. (i've always like the strokes btw).

kephm, Thursday, 12 August 2004 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

oh yeah - liars and boredoms OTM. are the new pornographers rock? are they together? i guess they're pop/rock or something. but theyd be up there for me, too.

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:14 (twenty-one years ago)

or Supersilent

woah? i second that!:) live, they can be ferocious.

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say Mclusky since that was the last great rock show I saw. Before that, probably the Blood Brothers. (Also waiting patiently to see Comets on Fire later this month...)

Nick Mirov (nick), Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

no lightning bolt?

blah, Thursday, 12 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

even though I don't really listen to their albums too much any more, I do think sleater-kinney are the best live rock band in the world now.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 12 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

matt, do you have the intelligence cd? if not, GET IT GET IT GET IT

What's the intelligence? is that a new A Frames one (I've only heard the s/t and A Frames 2)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:08 (twenty-one years ago)

The A-Frames are *GREAT*!

Best rock band right now though is Burning Brides.

Igor, Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

suprisingly, its still Sonic Youth

chris andrews (fraew), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the liars album has grown on me steadily. it's weird and ugly. i will play it some more tomorrow.

i think franz ferdinand are quite good.

low are currently my favourite guitar band - and have been for some time. their box set is incredible, and re-affirms my love. but if by rock band you mean "band wot rocks" as opposed to just "band wot plays guitar-bass-drums" then perhaps they don't fit the bill.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:35 (twenty-one years ago)

C'mon now. This is quite easy. MY MORNING JACKET. Hands down the best rock band/ live show of the past decade.

Marcus The, Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

!!!

Sami (Sami), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the new campag velocet album is very good also.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

T H E F U T U R E H E A D S.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Whoa! I was thinking in general terms rather than live, though clearly a mindblowing live performance would fuel a decision.

CharlieNo4 - yep I'm in Sydney and Dappled Cities Fly kick it don't they?

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I was also close to picking Flaming Lips and Lightning Bolt. Agree w/ Sonic Youth still too especially from a canonical status.

Oneida and Comets On Fire - I have a couple MP3s, I'd say Oneida are more interesting, but that Comets track does shred, um, well. Anyone else think Comets reminds of JSBX as well as Mudhoney?

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Liars, but I've never seen them live. Same with Sleater-Kinney who've been putting out great albums for like 1000 years. The correct answer deserves its own post:

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

JOHN WILKES BOOZE MOTHERFUCKERS!!!!!!!!!!11111111

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

And lastly: The Constantines are doing it for me big time atm!

Liars - I dunno, I just dunno. Maybe I have to see them live to "get it."

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:05 (twenty-one years ago)

A vote for the Stripes.

Wish Jack would quit the side projects though this Beck thing might be interesting. Might not too.

The Velvet Overlord (The Velvet Overlord), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Marcus The I must say is OTM with My Morning Jacket, holy shit they are incredible.

piers (piers), Thursday, 12 August 2004 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

intelligence is an a frames side project. it's lars' band. sounds like the a frames + the country teasers. really good.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 13 August 2004 00:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, think about it there's really no other option but Lightning Bolt.

Rubberband Man (Rubberband Man), Friday, 13 August 2004 00:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I must say that I like me them A Frames.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 13 August 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm telling you for the last time it's the Burning Brides.

Igor, Friday, 13 August 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

On record: Sleater-Kinney
Live: R.E.M. (yes that's right), Yeah Yeah Yeahs

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Friday, 13 August 2004 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Does Ted Leo/Pharmacists count? If not them, The Darkness.

So many people were all like "Shellac" that for a second I thought they may have released a new album or something.

billstevejim, Friday, 13 August 2004 01:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Are Shellac ever gonna put out a new album? Shellacfreeks on here must know something.

Oneida/Mclusky= different approaches to the same destructive ends.

i still have hope for QotSA, but time will tell if they'll regain the paper crown.

three way tie between Icarus Line, Comets On Fire and The Hunches.

Radiohead.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Friday, 13 August 2004 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Full props to the people who nominated The Magic Band, Flaming Lips and The Sadies; however the correct answer is still The Damned.

They may not be as good as they were '77-'84; and Dave may 47 and the Captain 50; but they're still the greatest band on the planet right now.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 13 August 2004 10:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote for Bersuit Vergabarat because a) I think it's true and b) someone had to maybe vote for a group from outside the English-speaking world, "the planet" being somewhat larger than what's defined here

Second place: El Gran Silencio, but I would say that

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I find this thread to be rockist. So someone vote for Outkast.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Bersuit Vergabarat is a very good mention! (I'm really glad you told me about them btw, I probably would've never heard 'em here in the HEART OF IGNORANCE, er, AMERICA, by my own methods).

I wanted to say Manu Chao yesterday, but Manu Chao's not a band, he's a dude, dude. But yeah, he deserves mention more than lots of these fuxors (especially considering the word "planet" in the thread title).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

a-frames/intelligence ruleez. but not in august. not in my hood.

fiery furnaces has had the record to beat lately. but when i think rock... i think rock me like a hurricane... as in live and ducking... and so then i have to say that i'm still reeling from the freshness of last night's josephine foster and the supposed's show. (http://www.100songsising.com)

You people are letting the heart-choking brilliance of Mick's "Wandering Spirit" blind you to the obvious conclusion that it's still the Stones.

yawnweiner (briania), Friday, 13 August 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

The new Green Day single is insanely terrific, so I'm saying them.

Comets on Fire or Lightning Bolt.

Do the Dead C count as a rock band?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Sleater-Kinney couldn't rock if their yawnsome little lives depended on it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

neither could you, if yours did.

RJG (RJG), Saturday, 14 August 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Glad to see the Sadies getting some lurve on this thread, because I find a lot of the bands named here to be atrocious. If you like them, then check out Tangiers : another Toronto band that rock like mad.

Hardly the best in the world though. That would be Mogwai.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 August 2004 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Rock music sucks.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 3 May 2007 14:50 (nineteen years ago)

pretzel walrus, Thursday, 3 May 2007 14:53 (nineteen years ago)

thirteen years pass...

I was just thinking the other night “who’s the best band right now?” and it’s got to be either Haim or Big Thief. I know many of you would choose a certain bunch of highly verbose Englishmen but I’m mostly immune to their charms.

let's do this ILM

(my answer is Oranssi Pazuzu, obviously)

(also, ignore the word 'rock' in this thread-title if you can)

imago, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:04 (six years ago)

(also this is a STRICT OPO)

B*Witched

Mambo Number 5 was a number one jam (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:14 (six years ago)

Does it have to be a band? 'Cause Lingua Ignota would be my pick otherwise.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:16 (six years ago)

yeah specifically a band

imago, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:17 (six years ago)

side-task: which of the suggestions from August 2004 could feasibly still apply now

imago, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:18 (six years ago)

Ok, then it's gotta be Greta Van Fleet.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:20 (six years ago)

For real tho I have no idea.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:20 (six years ago)

take my amazing thread seriously you wanton jackanapes

imago, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:21 (six years ago)

Uncharacteristically close-minded of you to dismiss B*Witched & GVF so readily tbh.

pomenitul, Saturday, 30 May 2020 16:23 (six years ago)

Yes, Big Thief is the best band right now.

Charging for Brewskis™ (morrisp), Saturday, 30 May 2020 18:10 (six years ago)
