I don't know who sets the "rules" of the poll, but I'm wondering if the 1992 recording of Henryk Gorecki' Symphony No.3 Opus 36, which was conducted by David Zinman, would qualify for the album list. The piece is obviously not from the 90s, but the recording is.
This isn't necessarily going to be my nomination, but it's on my shortlist right now, and I wanted to see what others thought. :)

I would strongly suggest not nominating the Biggie and B&S tracks, as each of those artists already has several songs nominated, and at this point any more songs of theirs nominated just hurts their chances of placing anything high in the poll.

Besides that, I'd say the Cardigans and BBoys have the best chance of making the poll, but I'd personally choose "Windowlicker" and "93 til Infinity"

Well, Steve I nominated Dangerous and All Saints already, so that wasn't quite my point, just that this thing is kind of hell on my sensibilities. I just went out to lunch, realised I'd forgotten 'Kiss From A Rose' and just wished I could drink at work.

Sweet Female attitude is "technically '99", much better that than another vote on the same Destiny's Child single (for example). There's also a ton of happy hardcore and old d'n'b that I can't name but really love. The 90s as a whole is too fucking big for this and I knew this already simply by watching MTV's So 90s each Sunday and noting how early-mid 90s-centric it is.

Lordy, I can almost see what Ricardo means with those Chemical comments, but I've gotten people to dance to the original and Dust Brothers' remix of 'Elektrobank' in the past 2 years, while 'Not Another Drugstore' and 'Chemical Beats' are tried, tested and true for me and a mate.

Glad in some ways (and apathetic in others) to see Tom's list. Look closely at no. 46 - JX - 'There's Nothing I Won't Do'. If no one else will, I may sawp 'The Key, The Secret' for it.

Gear i think you should narrow the range of points awarded not expand it - i'd even consider going the '20pts for 1st place, 1pt for 20th place' route this time. it's going to be a much closer contest this time anyway because of the variety of stuff available to vote for so i don't know, but the gulf between 1st and 20th just won't be as big as 70pts for most people voting i would've thought, and it may encourage huge winning margins for things like 'OK Computer' and 'In Sides' which would be a bit annoying/predictable i think.

I've always meant to say that there ought to be more votes allowed for tracks than albums, on the grounds that people know far more tracks than they do complete albums. By the time I got to my 30th 90s album in the nominations, I'd be like "Well yeah - I know that and it's pretty good", whereas with 30 tracks I'd still be agonizing about what I have to leave out.

Bah, what's all this crazy talk about changing the points scheme! Giving a high number of points to high ranking albums doesn't "encourage huge winning margins", it reflects the importance of those high rankings.

I see the fear -- suppose, you've got a lot of people that *really* like, say, "Hey Ya". You worry about it getting a lot of #1 votes compared to its total votes. For instance, what if you had

Hey Ya: 10 #1 votes
30 total votes

Get Yr Freak On : 5 #1 votes
60 total votes

This is an extreme example, but it would appear that the voting was slanted by hardcore OutKast fans ranking their song very high.

Did these sorts of things happen on the 00's poll? As I mentioned on those threads, the only case where it did was with Daft Punk, i.e. lots of ILM uber-devotees, and the singles carried fewer total votes than other singles in proximity to them on the list (also due to vote splitting amongst the hardcore fans).

Therefore, under a 15 ... 1 voting system, Daft Punk would have likely finished considerably lower on the singles AND albums list ... remember OPM had 56 votes, 3 #1's. Discovery had 55 votes, *10* #1's. So, which is the more accurate picture of ILM's tastes?

With a 30 .. 1 vote system, you can wind up with crazy stuff like Loveless getting 4 #1 votes, OK Computer getting 4 #2 votes, and ONE #27 votes, and Radiohead is the winner! Sound like an unrealistic, contrived situation? It isn't -- that's more or less what happened in Pitchfork's 90's Redux list, MBV* got 4 #1's to OKC's one (and Neutral Milk Hotel's three), but OKC got more fringe top ten votes and won!

*this is a hugely significant margin when only twenty people vote in the poll.

We need a vote on the voting system! I personally think that lots of votes should weigh heavily compared to a few high votes - I'd favour scoring from say 50 for #1 to 21 for #30. There isn't a right way, of course.

yeah, on reflection i think 15 albums makes more sense. i think if we ask for 30 submissions we'll have albums that everyone sorta likes but few actually love, poll well simply because tons of people put them at 20 or 25.

also it's more interesting if also more frustrating to winnow it down to 15 rather than 30. in my opinion.

also i think a lot of people sacrifice great singles (TLC, Basement Jaxx, Pulp to name but three) because the albums they're from ARE nominated and vice versa. I get a bit annoyed when a crop of singles from the same album end up in the poll as well as the album they're from because I keep thinking about all the great tunes not on any album.

No, I haven't nominated yet, Am; Sundar and I were working out a kind of deal though, I think, where I am gonna nominate the Sonny Sharrock album. So that only leaves one spot :(

And yeah, I was really leaning towards that Royal Trux disc; spent the weekend, two weekends ago, listening to it repeatedly. Like three or four times over the weekend. And it really is outstanding. I think I'm in love with that record now more than at any other time since it came out... So many great little melodic fragments and Hagerty's playing is continually exciting. I think it's their best record. And nothing by them has been nominated. And yet, I'd love to nominate another Jazz record. The Polwechsel and O'Rourke-affiliated stuff is all kind of important in seeing the way toward the new breed of quiet improv. and Big John Patton made an unexpectedly great record. and the Shrimp Boat is a sentimental favorite. and the Ex and Tom Cora should really be on a list of 90s stuff. AH well, too hard.
