AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:17 (twenty years ago)

The performance line-up seems godawful.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:19 (twenty years ago)

Where the white women at?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:33 (twenty years ago)

Lil Jon, YYT, Outkast and maybe Fat Joe and Kanye might be aiight. The rest...meh.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, all that great crunk is kinda cancelled out by... well... hoobastank

lemin (lemin), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:36 (twenty years ago)

Yellowcard ups the anti on crappy late 90s pop/punk by adding a violin. As the Beastie Boys would say, "You can't front on that".

But in real defense of this, Polyphonic Spree is an interesting concept and in my opinion at least half of Outkast has picked up where Prince left off. But whether I'm a "true funk soldier" is still yet to be determined.

As for the rest of the bunch, either I don't know who they are or I don't care enough to make a comment.

Dio, Ween, and Turbonegro forever.

Helltime, Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got that Ween DVD too, Helltime. Sick, innit?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:38 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that Jet song about a year old now? Way to stretch your 15 mins.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:39 (twenty years ago)

I'll allow that p. spree might be fun to watch.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:40 (twenty years ago)

Yeas, Aaron, in my opinion, the Ween DVD is sick. Everything Ween does is sick. Personally, I have always agreed with Hank Rollins that everyone should bow down to the alter of Ween because they are the Saviours of music in general. Back when I did a lot of drugs I loved them. Now that I just drink myself into oblivion whenever my schedule allows it I love them even more. In fact, my band Josta Baby is kinda modeled after them, in the sense that we're just 2 guys with a drum machine and 4-track recorder. And a keyboard with a vocoder. Can't forget the vocoder. That's what gives us a competative edge. Over other duos with drum machines and 4-tracks.

Helltime, Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:48 (twenty years ago)

Just make sure ten years from now you're recreating the 4-track/drum machine stuff with a full band live cuz THAT SHIT KICKS ASS.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh, don't you worry. Believe me, when either I hit the lottery or my wife gets some ridiculously high paying job we're gonna hit the live circuit like a motherfuck. I'm talking me and A-train backed by another guitarist or two, a bassist, a drummer, 2 keyboardists (one on Fender/Rhoads electric piano and synths, one Hammond B-3 and synths), a bongo/toca percussionist (or maybe 2 or 3, a la DC GoGo style), a horn line, and 3 black chicks in church robe (one with a tamborine) singing soulful-as-a-motherfucker backups. I got this shit all planned out.

helltime, Sunday, 29 August 2004 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Hurrah for being nowhere near a TV when this happens! (Because I'll be out on the beach at a party.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago)

Sounds rad helltime.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:00 (twenty years ago)

No host this year. They tried to get Chappelle but he wouldn't/couldn't for some reason.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:16 (twenty years ago)

Hoobastank

'nuff said, right there.

joseph pot (STINKORâ„¢), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:18 (twenty years ago)

Seriously? What, will there just be announcer v.o.'s?
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, PRESENTING BEST FEMALE: PARIS HILTON AND QUEEN LATIFAH!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:20 (twenty years ago)

When I dig a hole in the ground, Erection.
When I hear that Nick Lachey sound, Erection.

Helltime, Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:27 (twenty years ago)

haha, I knew I did right starting this a day early.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:29 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually kinda curious how they're going to pull this off myself.

Fact: Three of the five nominees for best video are ILM Top 20 songs of the decade.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:30 (twenty years ago)

I see my bosses face -
I see a swastika -
Another loser in the human race -
I see a swastika -
I see the cars go by -
I see a swastika -
Pretty girls pass me by -
I see a swastika -

I'm a timebomb and I'm out of control -
I'm a live one and I'm gonna explode -
They are closing in and I'm out of control -
Timebomb and I'm gonna explode -

I read the billboard signs -
I touch the flames of Hell -
Their hidden message I unwind -
I touch the flames of Hell -
The dark void behind the golden mask -
I touch the flames of Hell -
I blew my cover now I've got to move fast -
I touch the flames of Hell -

I'm a timebomb and I'm out of control -
I'm a live one and I'm gonna explode -
They are closing in and I'm out of control -
Timebomb and I'm gonna explode -

I'm outta control -

1 - 2 - 1-2-3-4 -

Timebomb -
Tick tock -

helltime, Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:32 (twenty years ago)

Man I was gonna paste the complete nominee list but MTV's website fucking sucks.
Best Video Nominees:
D-12 - My Band
Jay-Z - 99 Problems
Outkast - Hey Ya
Britney Spears - Toxic
Usher f/Lil Jon & Ludacris - Yeah

A link to the rest

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:41 (twenty years ago)

Is this the 20th anniversary of the award show? Or was that last year?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

If so, it's a sad fucking way to celebrate.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:43 (twenty years ago)

Man, the list of performers is quite behind the curve, even for MTV.

Eric H. (Eric H.), Sunday, 29 August 2004 05:52 (twenty years ago)

You know you love it! You know you want it! Pre-show at 6:30 Eastern! (no, i don't have a life, wanna make something of it?) I will be here and I will be queer.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:37 (twenty years ago)

wtf have the polyphronic spree had a hit or something? Why are they being involved? Are they the official mainstream Flaming Lips stand-in now or something?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:39 (twenty years ago)

and I was about to say Hoobastank would be the most boring part (and I like that damn song) but that was before I realized Alicia Keys was on the line-up.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:41 (twenty years ago)

oh hey! I jus realized why she had a car key on her ear in that video. Her name! Keys! Witty.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:42 (twenty years ago)

They play Polyphonic Spree on the local nu-grunge radio station here!!!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:43 (twenty years ago)

Who will kiss in the opening number?

Britney and Kevin?
Ashlee and Jessica?
L'il Jon and Kanye West?

WHO WILL IT BE?????

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:49 (twenty years ago)

Terror Squad and Hoobastank.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 16:50 (twenty years ago)

judging by commercials I am assuming dave chappelle is the host, but there is going to be some kind of running joke about how he isn't the host. this could be hilarious or terrible or both.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:00 (twenty years ago)

So who will be watching/posting 2nite besides me? It's gonna be bloody and it's gonna be ugly. In other words: I hope Alex is watching. We need his bile.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:06 (twenty years ago)

dude, terror squad. kind of excited.

brock (brock), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:16 (twenty years ago)

my tv and computer aren't in the same room, so not me.

x-post

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 17:43 (twenty years ago)

Barry beat me to "who's gonna lez up?"

Jessica Simpson's father would disapprove/get off on it, so you know that's out. My money is on Xtina and Paris Hilton.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:20 (twenty years ago)

So who will be watching/posting 2nite besides me?
Well, me obv.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Could someone please tell me who the fuck Omarion is? He's the only celeb appearing tonight who I have never heard of before in my life.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:13 (twenty years ago)

So do they keep Kurt Loder cryogenically frozen all year and just thaw him out for the VMA preshow or what?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:32 (twenty years ago)

yes, they do.

i have already learned that quentin tarantino is making a movie with the muppets and queen latifa.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Was Sofia with him? I'm anxious to see the forehead/chin of their future spawn.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:39 (twenty years ago)

[omg I can't believe how I don't even have a glint of interest.. ]

dave225 (Dave225), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:39 (twenty years ago)

Courtney Love should take this opportunity to showcase her new chin, or lack thereof. Oh, and the record, which is actually still brilliant, btfw.

I'm American, Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:40 (twenty years ago)

no, quentin wasn't there. it was someone else in the movie talking about it.

kurt loder reminds me of the king of the vampires i saw last nite in that movie Underworld.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:41 (twenty years ago)

i have already learned that quentin tarantino is making a movie with the muppets and queen latifa.

OLD NEWS DUDE:
Quentin and Muppets and Toto oh my!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:42 (twenty years ago)

it's new to me!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

someone will eventually explain to me what john norris is wearing, right?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Can I just say this now: HOOBASTUNK! There, I got that out of the way.

Hey, Jadakiss, live and in full effect.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

I like the lyrics to this Jadakiss song:
"Why's the industry designed to keep the artist in debt?"
When's the last time you heard someone say something like that in a mainstream song?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:53 (twenty years ago)

only got to see a little live Pitbull. I like Pitbull. He is mr.M.I.A.M.I. after all.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

When's the last time you heard someone say something like that in a mainstream song?

the answer, my friend, is blowing out my ass.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:05 (twenty years ago)

Hey Anthony:
"HOOOOOLD OOON IF YOU FEEEL LIKE LETTING GOOOO"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:06 (twenty years ago)

hahaha!

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:08 (twenty years ago)

I am going to be doing my annual play-by-play on my blog, and I could not possibly be less enthusiastic. Please please please be interesting, MTV! Defy my expectations!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:09 (twenty years ago)

Dude Xtina's hair looks stoopid. She can't pull off that Marilyn/Madonna perm.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:13 (twenty years ago)

Can I just take this moment and say a big FUCK YOU to MTV Europe for not showing the pre-show. They can eat me. Eat me backwards, MTV Europe.

I'm European, Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Stupid question : did everybody ripoff the play-by-play format for awards shows/spectacles from The Sports Guy Bill Simmons, or was that just me??

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:18 (twenty years ago)

Much Music is airing their own pre-show, consisting of original material that MTV doesn't carry -- VIDEOS BY THE ARTISTS NOMINATED TONIGHT!

It's an old joke, but it never gets old.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago)

christina just said that her new single is a "20's-style 50's 40's thing".

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:19 (twenty years ago)

OMG Lil Jon and Paris Hilton collabo

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago)

I know, I can't wait!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:21 (twenty years ago)

Ashlee Simpson :"The darkness is a queer you"??????

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:23 (twenty years ago)

Barry, sadly it *has* gotten old - since MM has followed suit.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:24 (twenty years ago)

"Pieces of You" sounds like a John Mayer song

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:25 (twenty years ago)

oh no Ashlee why give up set time to NEW FOUND GLORY???????

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:26 (twenty years ago)

why is Bruce Willis hanging out w/Mr TPuffy?

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

oh man Sway jumps on stage and yells "That performance was brought to you by PEPSI!"
only on MTV...

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:29 (twenty years ago)

bruno is reprazentin'!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:30 (twenty years ago)

When Sway whoops, he sounds like he's doing a Randy Jackson impression.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Solely because of this thread, I am looking forward to this show ten times more than I was at the beginning of the day.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago)

BREAKTHROUGH VIDEO

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:38 (twenty years ago)

Barry, starting this thread and posting on it is my only reason for watching as well.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:40 (twenty years ago)

it's calum's girlfriend from the black eyed peas!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Al Sharpton is here?!?!?!?!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:43 (twenty years ago)

Jay-Z is lookin' swank.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago)

"Vindicated is a great word, John."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:45 (twenty years ago)

Ali G is there?

billstevejim, Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm kinda surprised they aren't going to have Franzferdinand or Modest Mouse play

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:47 (twenty years ago)

It's such a weird feeling when Jay-Z and Christina Aguilera seem to be the old-timers.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:48 (twenty years ago)

I guess both bands are on tour and couldn't make it, artdamages.

It's weird, though, that alt-rock made a big comeback this year, and only the Polyphonic Spree is there to represent it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

pitbull should do a song with sean paul. i would die and go to heaven.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:49 (twenty years ago)

Johnny, I'm 25 but feel like I'm 45 watching it this year. The past few years I was right with the MTV pop, but this year it's just so many artists I don't care about even a tiny little bit.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:50 (twenty years ago)

this show does feel strangely eminem-less.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah. This is the first since 99 without Mathers, am I right?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:51 (twenty years ago)

watching that last movie awards show it seemed like mtv was weirdly in flux. schizophrenic in a way. they just need a shot of j-lo or something. or Em. I dunno, I mean Usher is huge, but it doesn't feel like hugeness.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Beyonce done fucked up her hair too.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Beyonce looks nuts!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

Usher is only huge because all the big guns didn't put out records this year. His hugeness is an entirely default thing.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:53 (twenty years ago)

drag queens across the country are gonna be freezeframing that beyonce mess.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:54 (twenty years ago)

that's probably true, Matthew. And they are STILL working Outkast and Justin, ya know. They need a blockbuster.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:55 (twenty years ago)

Usher is kinda like the modern Lionel Richie. He's big, but he's never going to get people to really care about him outside of his moment.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:55 (twenty years ago)

The rap stuff is the best reason to watch this thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Is Andre at this thing, or just Big Boi?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

dude wtf you don't get three hits in the top ten at once just cuz its a "slow year." If that's all it took there'd be a lot more precedent.

"BURN" ROOOOOOLZ.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:58 (twenty years ago)

Oh wow, LL Cool J actually is old.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

I find that comforting.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

Barry, starting this thread and posting on it is my only reason for watching as well.
Aaron suffers for ILM's benefit and that is why we love him.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

You're nuts. "Burn" is so lackluster. The only true hit on that record is "Yeah" and that's only cos of Lil John going "Yeaaaaaaaaah" and "Okaaaaaaaaaaay." Usher has no competition, and he's the only major label product this year that even seems slightly like a star.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I mean fuck are you callin' him Lionel Richie cuz that's the most recent black star you could think of that doesn't get mad critic love?

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:00 (twenty years ago)

TV Shirts with no pants = DA NEW STYLE

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

I like Usher, and those songs are cool. It just doesn't feel like a bomb dropping, you know? I mean, it's Usher. He never made me do backflips. But the ladies love him and that's really what matters.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago)

At least they're using straight video this year instead of doctoring it to look like film.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Usher is pretty much as big a star as one can be outside of modern rock without having any charisma whatsoever.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Jenny from the docks.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:03 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:04 (twenty years ago)

haha his mic cut out for a sec

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

Worst lip-synching evah!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:05 (twenty years ago)

lil' jon to the rescue!

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

I'll admit I kinda got goosebumps when Lil Jon screamed "YEEEEEEEAHHH!"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:06 (twenty years ago)

Dullest MTV awards opening of all time!

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:08 (twenty years ago)

well, yeah

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago)

so there really is no host ... ?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago)

how long before the fresh prince mentions his stupid shark movie?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:11 (twenty years ago)

holy ass kiss

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

Wow, shack really is tall.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:12 (twenty years ago)

oh, wait, nevermind

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

but why shaq, exactly?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

I hear Shaq is the one and only: CAN YOU DIG IT??????

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:13 (twenty years ago)

He plays for Miami now.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

oh, right.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:14 (twenty years ago)

What is the spinning white towel thing about?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:15 (twenty years ago)

Wow two huge mic fuckups in the first 15 minutes

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:16 (twenty years ago)

First time Talk Talk's ever been mentioned at the VMA's?

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

"we would like to thank tok tok!"

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

No Doubt is much less offensive to me now that they are marketed as a "pop" group and not "alternative".

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:17 (twenty years ago)

man, i could mold some tacos on gwen stefani's shoulders.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if No Doubt are into Talk Talk's later stuff. I mean, I don't wonder that, really, but maybe I should because it would be funny.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Ha, we all think alike, I couldn't believe TT got mentioned on MTV either.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:18 (twenty years ago)

So no one else knows the reason for the spinning white towels?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Is it a basketball thing?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:21 (twenty years ago)

To Canadians: who the fuck is this Matt Babel guy on MM? Is he going to be pimping MTV programming all NIGHT? Get this off my TV screen!

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago)

I have no idea. I was *just* yelling that at my screen not two minutes ago.

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:25 (twenty years ago)

Miami is apparently every celeb's 2nd home.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:28 (twenty years ago)

phew Jet/Yellowcard/Hoobastank is one lump performance. Get this crap outta the way already.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:29 (twenty years ago)

Kim (Kim), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

wow, Hooba cannot sing tonight

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:31 (twenty years ago)

I just realized Jet is the ugliest band I've ever seen.

And I've seen Slade.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Ugh, Mr. Hoobastank is totally out of tune.

jaymc (jaymc), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

Bon Scott is turning in his grave with that hoobastank twat wearing an AC/DC shirt

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:32 (twenty years ago)

dig how that yellowcard chud totally extra-emofies the word "night".

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:33 (twenty years ago)

Hoobadude was totally tone-deaf.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

OMG WTF PUNK ROCK VIOLIN! I had no idea.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:34 (twenty years ago)

maria sez to me about hoobadude: he's not very good at singing, is he?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:35 (twenty years ago)

that Yellowcard song is great. (haha the auidience is glad THAT whole thing is over)

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:35 (twenty years ago)

I didn't mind Jet. That drummer was fuckin' wacky looking. Was he in Road Warrior?

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:36 (twenty years ago)

they did that battle of the bands thing with the hives and that other aussie band and the white stripes were supposed to do it too and then they said they wouldn't. i think i'm remembering that correctly.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Fortunately, they were smart enough to put that at the beginning of the show when the crowd would have been hot for anything.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:39 (twenty years ago)

yeah it was the vines. that was the same year Plastic Axl showed up with Faux-GnR.
x-post

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:40 (twenty years ago)

"I've gotta SERINATE these women. You know what I'm sayin?"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:43 (twenty years ago)

Whoa Chaka was off key

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:50 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

that was some crazy shit, though.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:52 (twenty years ago)

it seems like all the mtv shows just get messier and messier as time goes on. and no host, what's up with that? the cameras don't know where to go.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:53 (twenty years ago)

I've never seen a surprise cameo blown like that. I went from Holy shit, Chaka Khan! to oh my god is she drunk?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

they should have had Lil jon host.

artdamages (artdamages), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:56 (twenty years ago)

damn straight

AaronHz (AaronHz), Sunday, 29 August 2004 23:57 (twenty years ago)

all the mtv people are on miami coke. working in the round is confusing their addled brains.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

This show is just giving me more reasons to dislike Usher.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

usher has diarreha of the mouth

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:01 (twenty years ago)

I know we're only an hour in but this has gotta be the worst one ever.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:02 (twenty years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

Just wanted to chime in that the highlight has been Lil Jon's gold goblet with CRUNK FOR LIFE written in diamonds

Aaron W (Aaron W), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

this is completely surreal

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

oh, i'm all confused too, jess.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Why is MTV pretending they care about republicans too? They certainly didn't do that when they were pimpin Clinton in '92.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

I appreciate the sentiment behind what they were trying to do here, but man was that crowd COLD.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

believe it or not, this is still better than that last movie awards show.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:08 (twenty years ago)

it probably doesnt help that i'm watching this on like a 6" tv from 20 feet away turned up super loud to compete with the air conditioning

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:09 (twenty years ago)

is it just wishful thinking that dave chappelle could have made this mess the BEST show ever?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Why are all the chix dressing like gilded xmas tree ornaments this year?

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if he would have been able to top "Good Charlotte? More like a mediocre Green Day!" when introducing some of these clowns.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago)

whoa speak of the devil

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:15 (twenty years ago)

SKEET SKEET MOTHERFUCKERS!!!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:18 (twenty years ago)

Lil Jon is soooo the only thing I'm down with this year.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:19 (twenty years ago)

ugh what is with all the "medleys"?! what is with all the fucking weird-ass lip synching?!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:21 (twenty years ago)

The hip-hop performances are saving the show, just like last year.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:22 (twenty years ago)

omfuckingg was bruce willis just doing the lean back??

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:23 (twenty years ago)

how many friggin' shots of Usher do we need?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Chappelle's appearance was pretty anticlimactic. I was hoping he would get off some good Chris Rock style putdowns.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

i love you burce willis

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

haha i didnt look up and i thought owen wilson was dennis miller

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, even the rap stuff during the pre-show was better than any of the non-rap stuff on the actual show.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:25 (twenty years ago)

ugh fucking jet

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

why is jet dude dressed like he just got back from ron asheton's garage sale?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:27 (twenty years ago)

Medleys yeah - higher marketing potential. Why promote one single when in the same time you can promote two or three?

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:28 (twenty years ago)

haha VMA FOR A VIDEO GAME SNDTRK POP CULTURE IS IN MELTDOWN

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:28 (twenty years ago)

i actually kinda liked jet. i'd never heard them. if i heard them more though my feelings might change.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:28 (twenty years ago)

The Darkness was the only remotely non-ugh rock band nominated. A performance from even them would have been welcome in this barren wasteland.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:30 (twenty years ago)

In Germany, there was a cell phone advert that used that Jet song and it was on ALL THE TIME.
After a few months there, I became sick of that song beyond belief.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:31 (twenty years ago)

that would have involved the knowing wink, a premise mtv was all but founded on but was sold to pay for the last real world house

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:32 (twenty years ago)

xpost

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Well they had an ipod advert in the US that made them quickly tiresome for me here as well.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:33 (twenty years ago)

actually, the ATL krunk krew wasn't as hot as when the hot boyz were on some years ago. that really felt like some down-home revolutionary shit at the time for mtv. tho i do love the lil' jon krunky krud.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:33 (twenty years ago)

what is that song that was playing as the olsen twins came out?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

ashley i luv u!!!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

they should just fuck already

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:34 (twenty years ago)

haha i forgot jessica simpson was a singer

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:35 (twenty years ago)

This Jessica Simpson thing would only be cool if they cut over to Adam Green singing "Jessica" midway through.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago)

terror squad was so totally the highlight.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:36 (twenty years ago)

it was kinda endearing to see usher and kanye and them all singing along too.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

do they make everyone in the front row learn the words to EVERY song beforehand? That's just cruel.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

hahaha another mic fuckup! that piano was mute the first few bars.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:37 (twenty years ago)

when Jessica sings, she does this really weird head motion... like she's unhinging her jaw. It scares me.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

if "lean back" the single had that kinda energy i might actually like it

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

holy christ jessica simpson has a big fuckin mouth

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

nick would need like eight dicks to do it justice

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:38 (twenty years ago)

everyone's holding up cellphones. wtf

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

that's the new thing!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

On the plus side, she makes quite the argument *for* lip synching.

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:39 (twenty years ago)

haha miccio's head is explodingr right now

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:40 (twenty years ago)

haha "emerge"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

mtv's programming director needs to be smacked around for a while

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I've never heard Jessica Simpson sing before. This is proof that it's possible to express stupidity through technique alone.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:41 (twenty years ago)

THIS SHOW IS FUCKING TERRIBLE!!

Fuck this shit. I'm gonna go out drinking. Who's with me?

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 30 August 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

haha "and the winner for uh whatever" even the people getting paid to be there dont care!!

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

jesus! between tony hawk, mase and matthew lillard its starting to feel like 1999 again.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:42 (twenty years ago)

see jess even a FISCHERSPOONER performance would have improved this drek!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:43 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:44 (twenty years ago)

He's not here anymore, he's off voting for Good Charlotte 10 000 times.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Lauryn Hill might freak out and kill someone. there is still hope!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:46 (twenty years ago)

Al Sharpton could have made it a bit less obvious that he was reading cue cards.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:47 (twenty years ago)

Maybe there will be a SURPRISE Fugees reunion! That would ... oh wait, that would be shit.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:48 (twenty years ago)

she's clearly there to host the branigan tribute portion of the show

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:48 (twenty years ago)

jeez now I'm sitting here thinking how rad a Fisherspooner performance of "Emerge" with like 30 rockyhorrorized dancers would have been. See what you've made me sink to MTV?

Where teh polyphonic spree?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:49 (twenty years ago)

Taking Sides: Which is worse: This show -vs- the gap ad with lenny kravitz and sarah jessica parker they keep showing me?

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:50 (twenty years ago)

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:51 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:52 (twenty years ago)

Kim (Kim), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Will Forte is the funniest thing about this show so far, and they didn't even announce that he's there.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:53 (twenty years ago)

I've been going out for smokes during commercials so I've missed this GAP ad.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

does anyone else feel like they can barely keep up with this?

yeah, is the crowd authentically insane or just trying to earn their pay for the night? the best line so far from Chappelle was to the effect of "is there anything you guys don't like"? is this just Miami?

anyway, Eminem and Sarah Jessica Parker are the stars of the night for me. Maybe I just like the North.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:55 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Xtina can still sing a bit bitter than most everyone they throw up there.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 00:59 (twenty years ago)

this is not bad, really

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:00 (twenty years ago)

Since when does Xtina fancy herself a jazz and blues artist? Since two hours ago?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago)

she went from hocking loogies in dirty buckets to biting nellie mckay's style

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:01 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

this is not bad, really

yeah, all they're missing is Bruce Willis

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

I mean, this is a decent performance, but is this supposed to be her new image? Is this her Madonna 1986-1990 (black dresses, Marilyn Monroe, balladry, Dick Tracy, and "Who's That Girl") phase?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:02 (twenty years ago)

was that the bass line from shaft

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:03 (twenty years ago)

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

I liked Xtina too. Probably cuz I was struck with the feeling of: Oh my god, someone wants to actually entertain me! How novel!.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

i knew it was something super familiar

adam west (adamwest), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Terror Squad was cool and everything but that Nelly/Xtina thing was my favorite thing so far. Let me reiterate that 99.9999999999% of the time I HATE Nelly.

Maybe the special guest is MACHO MAN RANDY SAVAGE

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:06 (twenty years ago)

wait don't you guys get the backstage interview bits? usher just said he couldn't wait to watch his performance on tivo

Scott, you're OTM about Xtina/Nelly actually aiming for entertainment value. Watch and learn, crunk people!

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

If there's any semblance of serious purpose remaining at MTV, we'll hear from Randee of the Redwoods before the evening is over.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

there's no way this broad is 13

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 01:59 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

I think she's a clone who was raised from birth by her record company to become a pop star.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

they just played five seconds of Manitoba as the lead-in to the nominees and I think it was the best music we've heard in the last two hours.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:01 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:04 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:05 (twenty years ago)

wait what about linkin park? what did he say exactly I wasn't paying attention

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:07 (twenty years ago)

The Polyphonic Spree were pretty good - I liked the robes anyway. Though they were no match for Stevie Wonder with Alicia Keys or Nelly with Cristina.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

is it just me or do the now ads already look like they're beamed in from some future where this is all old music?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

he introduced his "partner", but i dunno, it might have been his butler.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:08 (twenty years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago)

he kinda said it with purpose though, didn't he?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago)

This thread is 500 posts long (not as long as this show, though) -- I think it's the best and worst of ILM all in one go.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago)

I got a local commercial for the City Parks Foundation. It had about 3 seconds of Sonic Youth visuals in it. It was like we switched to C-Span for 30 seconds.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago)

oh well "partner" can also be whiteboy meathead slang for "buddy".

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago)

Vincent Gallo's in the 99 Problems video?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:11 (twenty years ago)

It does look pretty dumb when MTV is throwing awards at OutKast months after the Grammys already have done so. So much for being cutting edge.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:12 (twenty years ago)

i have just given up here

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:13 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:13 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:15 (twenty years ago)

Wait... what does this song have to do with voting?

yeah i have to say, i still see glimpses of how fucking amazing outkast really are/can be

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:16 (twenty years ago)

i still say this track sounds like marc anthony

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:16 (twenty years ago)

OK, this "get out and vote" thing has now gone too far. Reminders are one thing, but this is the sledgehammer/lobotomy treatment.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Some of the vote signs say "Outkast"....

Andre 3000 '04!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:18 (twenty years ago)

i think in light of the whole big boi/andre divide the voting motif is almost clever

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:18 (twenty years ago)

VOTE

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

self-hatred, loneliness?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Andre: this show has been locked by an administrator

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:20 (twenty years ago)

Andre must be so sick of singing this song IT'S OVER A YEAR OLD FFS AND THEY CLOSE THE SHOW WITH IT

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty years ago)

Now is when I have to reflect on how I just spent 6 hours eating a box of Kix and posting on here about the VMAs. (xpost)

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:21 (twenty years ago)

I still wanna know what that song is they played when the olsen twins came out. I hear it in commercials and shit all the time and never found out what it was.
If anyone is watching this on replay let me know if you know it.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Okay, that's it for me. Good work, gang. See you here next year.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:24 (twenty years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 30 August 2004 02:25 (twenty years ago)

goodnight scott!

I'm watching a little of this on rerun right now, but after a quick scan of this thread I don't think I'll watch much more.

Even at that, though, I wish the VMAs were 4 days long and the RNC was already in reruns. The pundit gushing over Bush's speech on Thursday is gonna make Kurt Loder seem like an amateur.

spittle (spittle), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:18 (twenty years ago)

It just occured to me that much of MTV's core audience may have thought Alicia Keys/Stevie Wonder/Lenny Kravitz were covering the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 04:50 (twenty years ago)

Does that core audience remember farther back than "Californication"?

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 August 2004 05:03 (twenty years ago)

AaronHz (AaronHz), Monday, 30 August 2004 05:09 (twenty years ago)

inexplicably, there were a lot of shots of bruce willis. any reason why the fuck WHY?

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:28 (twenty years ago)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:33 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:36 (twenty years ago)

"we would like to thank tok tok!"

actually scott, thats what i thought they said at first.

my personal highlight was watching this on the brand new flat-panel tv at my job and having the screen be so wide, that everyone looked fat. [except for queen latifah, who looked thinner than everyone else on it]

we nicknamed it "ass-o-vision."

other fun moments:

- the dale chiluly glass/light sculpture as the backdrop

- jet looking downright lively, in comparison to the other two mall-emo bands they played with in the rock block, and thats being *kind*

- the kerry/bush daughters segment where it seemed like kerry's daughters were being booed more than the bush twins [perhaps the audience wasnt aware who they were?]

- gratuitous bruce willis shots

- puff daddy's mr t mohawk

- wishing jessica simpson would fall off the trapeze she was sitting on

- tim delaughter of the polyphonic spree looking very scared when being held in mid-air at the end of their song

- how the entire program was a non-stop advertising about voting [not that i have a problem with this but you know...]

- chaka khan singing way way way off key.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:38 (twenty years ago)

its kind of sad that i listed a glass sculpture before the performers as a highlight of this years VMA, but i guess thats saying a lot.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 30 August 2004 13:39 (twenty years ago)

[perhaps the audience wasnt aware who they were?]

if you can get a mob to try to stop election officials from carrying out their legal duty you can get one to boo people at an MTV show

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 30 August 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago)

xxxp nickalicious: to get to the stage, wayne walked on the crowd while trapped in a 10+ foot plastic bubble.

Also, I just saw him about an hour ago on the budget rent-a-car shuttle bus heading to Miami airport. I put my bags down on the luggage rack, and he was sitting right there. Had a nice "what the fuck?" moment.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

Wow, that looks like a cheesy Doctor Who special effect! ("Time And The Rani" to be specific)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:21 (twenty years ago)

It looks like he's saying "Gimme five! Through my bubble!"

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:22 (twenty years ago)

I heard that Tony Hawk, in a move reminiscent of the violin virtuosos of olde, who would file down three of their strings so that when they broke during the passionate performance they could astound and astonish the audience by continuing to play the single remaining string... anyway, Tony Hawk. His board broke.

Oh, and inspired by a couple of posts up there which unintentially mention jumping the shark and The Dark Crystal next to one another, I'm going to start saying that things "jump the shard."

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:46 (twenty years ago)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:55 (twenty years ago)

Cut to an exclusive with Sway...
"Yo Wayne Coyne has just shit his pants."

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Monday, 30 August 2004 15:58 (twenty years ago)

He's done that before at shows, so I guess it's standard practice now.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:01 (twenty years ago)

WAYNE COYNE SHITS HIMSELF AT SHOWS!?!? HE'S THE INDIE ROCK MIKE PATTON OMG!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:15 (twenty years ago)

anyway, Tony Hawk. His board broke.

thats because he was riding one of those shitty birdhouse models.

i bet.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 30 August 2004 16:18 (twenty years ago)

mike patton shits in paperbags.

(605, now!!!!)

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Tuesday, 31 August 2004 00:11 (twenty years ago)

It's no fun the way MTV fixes all the fuckups after the first replay. Fr'instance, I just caught the Jessica Simpson performance and the piano intro to her second song was restored. Also dud the way they edit out things like audience interference, like the dude that jumped onstage and started yelling about BB King during the Best Video presentation last year.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 00:12 (twenty years ago)

Oh that and the time Eminem got all pissed off at the Triumph puppet. They edited that out of replays too.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 1 September 2004 00:14 (twenty years ago)

That's why you have to tape it the night of.
