The self titled album makes me cry.

turner, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

in a classic or dud sense does it make you cry?

brains, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yeah that's the best album ever. lots of other jonathan richman records are pretty good too.

duane, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Total classic. Songwriting like the Smiths with a little more Rock'n' roll swagger thrown in, as if Morrisey and Lou Reed had co-written them. The whole thing sound like the Velvets too. You can just see Elvis Costello sitting in his bedroom playing this LP over and running over to his guitar...

turner, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, let's break up this little love-in [clubs Dr.C on the knees]. Tried it, couldn't stand his miserable "Why don't girls like me? Is it because I don't smoke? Is it because I don't have long hair" whining, except 'Pablo Picasso' (but the version in Repo Man is much better). Music is bobbins too: proto indie-wank. So another trip to the Record Exchange.

Didn't we do this one btw? I vaguely remember putting the boot in before. :)

Omar, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I like the ultra rare album after the Modern Lovers that has "Abominable Snowman In The Market" and the song about bees and flowers. It's the best JR around, but apparantly someone finds it too silly. It's really way sillier than any other albums he did combined.

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Here it is. "Hey there little insect" is a great song. Is this with the modern lovers? I thought it wasn't.

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

OH yeah, it is. It's called "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers". Duh. So how come I never see it around anywhere?

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's long outta print.

Nude Spock, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ow! (Rubs knee). Yeah, his whining CAN get a drag, but the music is, for me, a fine garagey blend of VU/kraut?/and nascent power-pop. I like it!

Bonus points for use of "Bobbins" though. Good word.

Dr. C, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only ML song I ever dug is "Egyptian Reggae". Bought the first album and was thoroughly disappointed. It sounds very amateurish and dated. Richman's voice is not great neither. What Omar said "proto indie-wank". Maybe also proto punk-wank. I feel ML is one of the dead ends after the big VU junction from 1970. Highly overrated in my book.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic - am esp. fond of 'Government Center' on the 'Bezerkley Chartbusters' (I think that's what its called) comp. The 'hit' version of 'Roadrunner' isn't a patch on the original Cale produced version, and I find 'I'm Straight' a bit dull (maybe 'cos I don't entirely agree w/the sentiment ahem) but otherwise it's almost pure gold until 'Back In Your Life', which is pretty patchy, the wonderful title track notwithstanding. Not so familiar with his albs in recent years, but 'Give Paris One More Chance' (from, I think, his first 'comeback' alb) is one of his greatest songs ever.

Saw J. Richman for the first time supporting Orange Juice at the Hammersmith Palais sometime in the eighties. Jonathan was SO charismatic, so funny and talented, we didn't bother to stay for OJ (D'oh!) Still the most impressive showman I have ever seen; once tried to interview him for a fanzine and he was v.v. hostile and paranoid - an object lesson in never meeting yr idols!

Andrew L, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic classic classic! "Hospital", "Pablo Picasso", everything! I like "Rockin' and Romance" too, though I wouldn't put it on the same 'astral plane'. Maybe a parallel one. Hey, what if "Astral Plane" is about dosing somebody with Rohypnol?

dave q, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I just recently picked up "The Original Modern Lovers" LP on BOMP! records - it's the demos for the first album with a few songs that didn't appear on that, allegedly all from 1973 and produced by Kim Fowley (Though JR himself debunks that in the liner notes). If you're a fan of the first Modern Lovers LP, I'd really recommend it - especially for folks who aren't as into the later stuff. Even though there's some duplication of songs, the versions are pretty different and it's got a much different attitude, really stripped down and tough.

fritz, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm often a little bemused by Jonathan Richman, but the first Modern Lovers LP is great. I love Old World and I'm Straight - maybe because a big part of me does agree with the sentiment, and it's one rarely expressed in pop music. Especially for the time, I thinks they're genius, contrarian lyrics.

Nick, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ist album is a classic. plus it's hilarious. "I'm Straight" is one of the funniest songs ever, whilst still being a good rock song. "Roadrunner," "Astral Plane," "Pablo Picasso," "She Cracked," "Old World," "Modern World" are all fine tracks as well. Someone thought this was awhiny album, maybe a little but not on the really good tracks. Whoever said it was proto-indie wank or something is just failing to appreciate a pretty unique album. Recorded in 71, the VU influence is obvious but other than that it pretty outside of what was going on in rock at the time. That said, I don't think any of Richman's later stuff has been nearly as good

g, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing I've ever heard by this geezer has been impressive. Some might say I haven't heard enough. Or that I haven't listened in the right way.

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Have you listened to the self-titled album? Nick and graysonlane are right about the humor. Plus think of Mrs. Welthorpe under the stairs. Then it might come together.

'Dignified and Old' should be added to the list.

I'm surprised that Dr. C likes them.

youn, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

>>> Plus think of Mrs. Welthorpe under the stairs. Then it might come together.

Why? Perhaps Edna knows. Edna?

the pinefox, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Fly Into The Mystery" from the Rock'n'Roll With The Modern Lovers LP is majestic!

Baxter Wingnut, Tuesday, 11 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think maybe there is a bit too much concentration on the lyrical content here? I still distinctly remember the first time I heard J.R's voice thinking 'what is UP with this guy?' You may have become too used to it to notice but his voice on those records is this bizarre nasal drawl that sounds as if he is COMPLETELY FUCKED UP! And of course the music is this ultra-simplistic, barely there backdrop to his singing, a lot of the time, sometimes fading away completely when he sings unaccompanied - And then it's so strange that the lyrics are about being straight - it's a great dissonance! I hate that naive stuff (Little Aeroplane?) Have you heard that live 'Wake Up Sleepyheads' song where the Felice guy says that he 'hates the words but he's willing to play guitar because he likes the chord changes'?

Luke, Thursday, 13 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Why are you surprised, youn?

Dr. C, Friday, 14 December 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
Oh my! I just bought Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers 42 track compilation "The Beserkely Years" after only having previously heard a couple of tracks. Within an afternoon I went from being someone with a passing interest to a full-on fan!
The Modern Lovers are the kind of band who get name-dropped an awful lot, but not that many people know a whole lot about them. I am so glad I do now.
I'm not normally a big fan of minimal rock'n'rolly stuff like this - I started a thread last week about how I couldn't get into the Velvet Underground. But this is a bit different - there's a lot of humour and wryness to Richman's work that I think probably influenced everyone from Pavement to Paul Barman. People who complain about his sappyness and his whining seem to be missing the point - this isn't Death Cab For Cutie introspection, songs like "I'm Straight" are absolutely hilarious. The way he pronounces "Hippie Johnny" and the way he's so pathetically fuckwitted about the situation - it's like he's taking the piss out of himself and in a way is foretelling the Emo future and laughing at it.
I love the multiple false endings on Ice Cream Man, his live performances being particularly endearing. The fact he played in hospital wards andd old people's homes and sang songs suited to those environments is probably one of the coolest things a rock star could do.
More people need to name-drop the Modern Lovers. Does anyone know if JR's new solo album is any good?

You never told the Doc why she was surprised. I am not surprised, by the Doc.

I expect I have not changed my mind about the band, not having heard them in years. Last I heard them, they seemed unmelodic and overrated. Yet, see comments above, etc, as per.

Anyway, the best ever thing connected with the band that I have heard is LLOYD COLE'S version of 'MODERN WORLD', which Youn gave me (thanks, Youn), and which I heard again today. It's really good, and almost makes me think that the geezer, Richman, might have had one or two OK ideas for making pop music. But maybe it needed Lloyd to bring them out.

First Modern Lovers album:
Classic.

Significant variant:
On the live "Precise Modern Lovers Order" the lyric to "I'm Straight" refers to "Hippie Ernie" - Ernie Brooks!

It Happened One Night. Before the Jonathan Richman show:
JR's opening act is a juggler- it's all entertainment, people! JR is standing around, my friend Steve tries to chat with him. Jojo, as is his wont, quickly becomes bored/annoyed/paranoid, points to the stage and says:

"I think we should pay attention to the juggler."

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C-CLASSIC. I love pretty much everything Jonathan Richman has ever done. Too much to put into words. I am not rational about it and I don't care.

Marcel Post (Marcel Post), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

an obvious classic and "she cracked" alone still means a lot for me.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

she cracked is one track of which i'm not very fond. the lyrics bug me more than they should. i hear it and think, "ok. have fun sitting around at home with your health food and your self-righteousness."

but mainly, ufc. at this point i like the live stuff i better than the studio album: precise modern lovers order, some bits off live at the longbranch, the bootleg cassette i got years ago at a wfmu record fair with an amazing 10+ minute version of a plea for tenderness.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:00 (twenty-one years ago)

God, I love on "Hospital" when he cracks himself up for a second. It's probably my favorite single second on any record.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I love it when he talks about the "dating bar." A friend used to put on a faux-British accent and say "I merely thought that Jonathan Richman was hungry, and a dating bar was a sort of candy bar, with dates in it."

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Eventually, I will hear them again, somehow, perhaps by finding my old tape, and I will report back.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, have you heard "Monologue About Bermuda" from Having A Party With Jonathan Richman? Where he totally makes fun of "She Cracked." He sings a couple of lines and then says, "Nothing snotty about that!"

Huk-L, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

yes, i have. having a party was one of the first jonathan solo records i heard. that song warmed my heart.

lauren (laurenp), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, those are two points in his favor. But will they be enough? He's already chasing the game and the other lads will be looking to pick him off on the break.

the bellefox, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I the only one who's ever thought that Jojo looks a lot like Serge Gainsbourg? Perhaps the two get separated in a transporter beam mixup, rendering one excessively innocent, the other overly debauched? Maybe we can borrow Momus's time machine, travel back in time and put the two back together so instead of two wayward geniuses we get one crappy musician.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

important thing to me. I'd trade everything else in a minute...

I sit all alone in the desert
And no girl understands me
But I can see through this bleakness and grey and sadness
And well I won't die now
Someday I'll be dignified and old
I say, you, don't die now
Someday we'll be dignified and old together

Huk-L, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

With his early stuff, he's like the Willie Nelson of self-pity!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

she cracked is one track of which i'm not very fond. the lyrics bug me more than they should. i hear it and think, "ok. have fun sitting around at home with your health food and your self-righteousness."

I'd always assumed that the point of She Cracked is that he's trying too hard to convince himself of something - hence the 'yeah, staying at home and eating healthfood is great' lyric which doesn't quite convince somehow.

I have nothing on which to base this (highly subjective) argument.

And classic, though it took a few listens for me to realise why.

hobart paving (hobart paving), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the acapella drop on "Lydia" - what a song! I can't really fault the ML's yet they go against everything I hate about music - stripped down, jangly rock'n'roll riffs with whiney lyrics. That said it's gorgeous lovely stuff so yeh - UFCLASSIC!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I got Precise Modern Lovers Order, which just kills, when I was 17 and it totally reaffirmed all the self-indulgent proto-emo tendencies I had developed by that point, and would eventually overcome thanks to Rockin' & Romance!

Huk-L, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Most folks seem to regard the original Modern Lovers album as the greatest but it's not really very representative of Jonathan's stuff. He himself had turned his back on that style by the time it was released and he has rarely performed them live (except for Pablo Picasso and Roadrunner). Basically he felt the original Modern Lovers represented style over honesty and were way too uptight. The live version of "Down in Bermuda" (in which he mocks the angst of "she's cracked") explains it all pretty well. From "Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers" onwards he hardly whines at all and is rarely angst-ridden.

For what it's worth, I'd say his golden period runs from about 1979 to 1986 encompassing "Back In Your Life", "Rockin' and Romance" "Jonathan Sings" and "It's Time For..".

Some of these albums, and indeed most of his older albums, are really hard to find and deserve reissuing along with the full concert which was edited for "Modern Lovers Live".

I think it's now a myth that Jonathan is a bad guitarist and can't sing. Anyone who's seen him live in the last 20 years will confirm he's excellent on guitar, sings with passion and sounds like he means it, which more than compensates for the slightly adenoidal delivery (though lately his melancholic soppy voice has became waaaay too prevalant).

One thing I don't understand is his habit (in the last decade) of padding his albums with re-recording of his older songs. It's okay when he did it for the country album and the Spanish one, 'cos the new arrangements were pretty radical but these days he tends to just do a soppy vocal over a less-rockin' back-up. Why bother?

everything, Tuesday, 16 November 2004 21:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't even like those re-recordings on the country and spanish albums ("neighbors" on the country album, for example, is totally meh, and i otherwise love that album). i assume it's exactly what you call it: padding. i'd rather he do a few more covers, or just wait a couple more months before releasing the album so he can write one or two more new ones.

as for the original modern lovers album, it's absolutely classic, and i don't particularly care if jonathan himself likes it or not, or if it's representative or not. it's a great rock album.

First one is uber-Klassik, following four each had good stuff on them, certainly enjoyed them at the time.

Those with LP of the Live Album: check the cover carefully for extra sixth finger airbrushed (or photo artifact?) on Leroy's hand! (or is this memory an artifact as well? Perfect Thoughts Forever- I think not.
Those with CD: use magnifying glass.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 16 November 2004 22:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, more covers would be okay rather than re-recordings. He has good taste for picking them: Man Walks Among Us, Looking For the Heart Of Saturday Night, Rock and Roll Will Stand, You're Good Girls Gonna Go Bad. All highlights.

.. Oh, f*ckall, I've forgotten the words, Paul, can you sing?"

One time I saw Mojo Nixon and he started playing "Roadrunner" and somebody in the audience started doing the "Radio On!" and soon the rest of the crowd joined in. Mojo then told us that Jonathan told him, "Mojo, you can sing my song, but you can't change the words."

Possible TS: Mojo versus Jojo, but I ain't gonna be the one to start it. Right now anyway.

"I don't particularly care if jonathan himself likes it or not, or if it's representative or not. it's a great rock album."

I take your point, Cuz. What I want to get across is that even though "The Modern Lovers" is a great rock album, it's not a great Jonathan album (notably, it's the only album without his name on the cover). A lot of his strengths are undeveloped or absent, for example his loose conversational style, the enthusiastic odes to his various interests and passions, the ever-present importance of relaxing and having a good time. The original Modern Lovers cannot (or did not) swing like the 70's line-up could. Similarly, "In The City" is a great punk album, but not a great Paul Weller album.

Still, apart from being a cool album, "The Modern Lovers" does give an insight into the mind of the teenage Jonathan and comparing it with later albums like "Jonathan Sings" provides an interesting insight into how much someone can change when they shake off their youthful inhibitions and start to enjoy the world instead of fighting it.

Thanks, Marcel. Many years before that story, the same friend went up to Jonathan before a show to submit one of his high school songwriting efforts for possible recording. Jonathan took his lyric sheet but also requested a self-addressed stamped envelope. A few days later the SASE came back with the lyrics inside and the following note attached: Your song does not suit me. Jonathan Richman .

I may be overdoing this, but you may also enjoy the following story I just posted about a funky performance by Jonathan

one year passes...
Total, utter classic, uh huh!

I've always wondered if I'm Straight, She Cracked and Hospital are about the same girl, and if so, whether it's true or at least based on truth. To me they seem to form a narrative - the girl he loves hanging out with the hippy, druggy crowd in I'm Straight, her breakdown in She Cracked, and her subsequent spell in Hospital. It's like a loss of innocence tale. "As a child you must have been magic/I still get jealous of your old boyfriends in the suburbs sometimes" - devastating.
It's not especially judgemental or fingerwagging though. Dog Latin was OTM with the emo self-irony idea. The "eating health food at home" line is pretty funny an not especially self righteous.
They're an amazing trio of songs and whether they're meant to be about the same person or not, the effect is deeply moving.

there's something throwaway and at the same time singularly wise and sincere about everything that comes out of his mouth on that record. i really get quite a kick out of how the irreverent and speculative delivery fuses with the nicely developed musical arrangements. there's lots of charm there

so are these the only sessions by the original modern lovers (before J.R. moved to california)?

Intermedia Studio-Boston/Warner Bros. session (late 1971)
John Cale/Warner Bros. session (April 1972)
Alan Mason and Robert Appere/A&M session (April 1972)
Km Fowley/Stuart Dawson sessions (June 1972)
"Radcliffe demos" (Oct. 1972)
John Cale sessions (Sept. 1973 - no recordings completed?)
Kim Fowley/Gold Star Studio session (1973?)

and has anyone carefully sorted out which recordings are from which sessions? man i'd kill for a box set that started with the M.L. album as released in '76 but then including all or almost all of the above-listed sessions. ain't gonna happen.

as suggested earlier in this thread, there are other sessions that have been rumored. FWIW the earliest "solo" J.R. stuff is the "solo acetate" from 1974. honestly it sounds very uncertain to me, like he knows he's not interested in making the kind of music his old band made, but hasn't quite figured out what he wants to do instead.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 04:42 (fourteen years ago)

i've been (ahem) "finding" a lot of JR/MLs boots recently and frankly it gets very confusing... very difficult to date stuff from the early years. most studio boots seem to have a little from here, a little from there, mostly in atrocious sound quality (the only versions of the radcliffe demos i've ever heard are full of almost impenetrable hiss).

tbh the live stuff from this era is much more interesting b/c of jonathan's monologues and interactions with the audience. the "precise modern lovers order" album is probably the best document of this. the stonehenge stuff is probably the best-sounding live boot of the orginal MLs.

folks who like the later stuff (the JR&MLs era, so to speak) should find the peppermint lounge 7/20/81 show. apparently this comes from a promo LP the record company put together in the expectation that JR would soon have a new album out. as it turns out it took two more years to release "jonathan sings". the LP is a 37-minute edit of what was no doubt a longer concert. apparently boots of the whole thing are out there but don't sound have as good as the stuff pirated from the promo LP.

anyway.

oh and then there's the early'80s "jonathan goes funky" tape which is kind of bizarre. he seems to really have tried out a lot of different approaches in that era before settling on something he could live with. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=KUSJ9UJ1

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Tuesday, 11 October 2011 04:54 (fourteen years ago)

Gold Star is August of '73... and you listed all the ones I know about. Stonehenge is solid and there are the JR 1970 demos on that Punk Vault CD (Songs Of Remembrance), but I think that's it for the early stuff now that Precise M.L.O. and Long Branch have been released.

sleeve, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 05:14 (fourteen years ago)

Darn, sure wish I'd seen this thread earlier.Would it be feasible to re-post the Stonehenge recording, Tyler?
Just now listened to his self-titled album on New Rounder, released this summer. Charming as evah, with as much accompaniment as needed (never too much), not totally solo, despite the description posted alongside track listings (on rdio.com, where I listened for free, with no ads, so suck it spotify). Really sociable live moments from current tour on Youtube, with his tireless, unflappable drummer, and what a dancer (Jonathan)

Oops--although rdio lists July 5, 2011 as release date, discogs and others indeed say '89, so may be a reissue (on New Rounder, for that forever young vote, along with the new Jayhawks album, Plant, Krauss, Plant & Krauss, etc). Thanks Tyler and Amateurist, looking fwd to the Stonehenge re-post(JR on YouTube collection's also expired, adds lazy greedy me)

Intermedia tracks appear on the 2003 Castle reissue CD of the S/T, version of "Hospital", "Someone I Care About", "Roadrunner" and "Modern World"... supposedly a track called 'Ride The Highway" was also recorded.

ride the highway is on precise modern lovers, right?

tylerw, Tuesday, 11 October 2011 21:20 (fourteen years ago)

still, good point, would make sense to do a box set of all this stuff. complete original modern lovers, a couple discs, live show or two, etc.

Ton of his albums on his MySpace (the one with Pablopicassowas in its name) mostly overlapping with those on rdio.com, which also has live and studio Modern Lovers albums.

puff puff post (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Saturday, 22 October 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

i said this elsewhere recently but to me richman is like a national treasure, should be revered more on the level of like a tom waits imo

some dude, Saturday, 22 October 2011 20:06 (fourteen years ago)

yeah. the contrast is stark: each new album tom waits releases gets a big media campaign, NPR interviews, accompanying PBS special, etc. (you get the idea). richman's new albums just kind of get dropped out there. some of the recent ones are import-only or already out of print. my guess is that they sell in the low 10,000s.

i've seen him twice in recent years. in honesty i wasn't too hot on the second of those two shows; his tendency to blur all his songs together by virtue of extended each of them with almost atonal acoustic-guitar workouts, singalong parts, extended monologues, etc. went a little overboard. but other people no doubt liked it a lot. i do wish he would dig deeper into his catalogue, but i think just as in the 1980s he was embarrassed by the O.G. modern lover stuff, now he's embarrassed by the twee early "solo" stuff (ca. 1977–86). which is my favorite era for him but oh well. to each his own goat.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Saturday, 22 October 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i mean, it makes me glad we even got that original modern lovers album at all. seems like it was a pretty precarious thing.

tylerw, Monday, 9 June 2014 19:23 (eleven years ago)

my thought exactly. he's really unclear on where those takes come from - at one point, he says:

We got about four crazy, not very satisfactory tracks done, and then came the moment when Warner Bros. continued to put pressure on us, which led to Jonathan saying, “Well, I’m just not gonna do this anymore…”

So Warner Bros. dropped us.

anybody know what the story is here? did they end up using some/all of the earlier demo tracks?

polyamanita (sleeve), Monday, 9 June 2014 19:26 (eleven years ago)

Weird that he doesnt mention bermuda

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 June 2014 19:32 (eleven years ago)

xpost - They did demo sessions with John Cale before being signed to Warners and again after being signed. Think Ernie is talking about the latter, whereas the album mostly (or completely?) came from the earlier sessions.

everything, Monday, 9 June 2014 21:31 (eleven years ago)

Since he talks quite a lot here about "I'm Straight" it's funny he doesn't mention about how "Hippy Johnny" was originally "Hippy Ernie" and how he felt about that, especially since the "Ernie" version is more critical.

everything, Monday, 9 June 2014 21:51 (eleven years ago)

In the couple of weeks on the West Coast, we recorded all the songs that went into the Modern Lovers album, most of them recorded by Cale in a session where he basically captured us playing our live set. It went well, though all of us thought at the time that it was just a demo, preparation for what would be the "real" record

whoops missed that, thanks!

god, now that I dig into Discogs, this record has a ridiculous history. I knew that "Government Center" and "Dignified And Old" were added to the 1986 Rhino reissue and subsequent CDs etc, but I never realized "I'm Straight" wasn't on any previous version of the record! Crazy that it was not released until the 1980 Troublemakers comp.

polyamanita (sleeve), Tuesday, 10 June 2014 02:05 (eleven years ago)

yeah i always get confused. i was saying someone really just needs to do a complete original modern lovers box set, w/ all the studio sessions in chronological order, plus whatever live stuff they can gather up. don't know if it's just all tied up w/ different record companies or what but it'd sell like hotcakes!

tylerw, Tuesday, 10 June 2014 02:08 (eleven years ago)

In the UK at least I'm Straight was on the 1976 Berserkley version - presumably the version that all those punks were supposedly influenced by.

That's How Strong My Dub Is (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 11 June 2014 01:59 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, it was kind of weird how those three songs went missing for so long. First heard "Government Center" on Beserkley Chartbusters, "I'm Straight" on the Kim Fowley Original Modern Lovers and "Dignified and Old" I can't even remember when I first heard it, but I know it took ages. The novelty value made them seem like they were perhaps better than the other songs. Might have expected time to have turned the tables and devalued them but that never happened. Although I must admit I prefer the later version of "Government Center."

timellison, Sunday, 14 March 2021 23:29 (four years ago)

Yes, that last tune is my favorite- "Tell them, Leroy." He was sort of doing something similar to Jonathan's exoticized Chuck Berry or whatever you want to call it, but with his own spin on it. Unless I confuse both of their playing styles.

Think I probably bought the four albums (assuming I am counting right) with Leroy etc before I finally got to the Holy Grail of that first album and while I enjoyed those records I was probably a little dismissive of them. In retrospect I started to appreciate Leroy and Asa and D. Sharpe as a classic lineup. I mean I liked to go and see Jonathan with the Rockin' Robins and such but I couldn't really tell you who was in those bands unless it was a Paley brother or Curly temporarily returned to the fold. I guess Tommy and Jonathan is a classic lineup too.

The Ballad of Mel Cooley (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 16 March 2021 03:12 (four years ago)

There's just something about Jonathan and Leroy doing their version of Lou and Sterl, if that's not too much of a stretch.
