OFFICIAL THREAD FOR 2004 ALBUMS & SONGS POLL

Rules and regulations (all of which are flexible) to come in a minute.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 03:50 (twenty-one years ago)

All right, first off, this poll will be for three things--albums, songs, and compilations. You don't have to vote for all of them to vote for one or two of them, it's up to you. Lists should be sent to me at fadeout95@gmail.com.

ELIGIBILITY:

Albums:

Album elligibility will be treated very leniently--albums from late last year that didn't get their due until this year, or weren't released in your country until this year, or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year, will all count. The only thing I ask is that you don't include any albums that already made their rounds on a good number of year-end polls last year--check Acclaimed Music if you have any questions and see if an album is featured prominently on the 2003 lists.

Songs:

If a song appeared for the first time this year on any format (a/b-side, album track, comp track), it is eligible. If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year (i.e. Jay-Z's "99 Problems), it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year (i.e. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" in the U.S. or Khia's "My Neck, My Back" in the U.K.), it is eligible. A song is not eligible, however, if it appeared on a compilation for the first time this year but was already available previously (i.e. LCD Soundsystem's "Beat Connection," which was already widely known before being on DFA Comp #2).

Compilations:

Any sort of band compilation, best-of or miscellaneous (i.e. This is Music or Beehives) is elligible, as are label comps (Kompakt 100), genre comps (Left of the Dial) and DJ mixes, of both old and new (Unclassics and Daddy G's DJ Kicks). Re-issues are eligible as well, but only if they substantially expand upon the original album, so the two-disc re-issue of Pavement's Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain would be elligible, but not the unchanged re-issue of Disco Inferno's D.I. Go Pop.

Votes/Scoring:

You'll be voting for a maximum of 20 albums, 20 songs, and 10 compilations. You can also submit lists for 10 albums, 10 songs or 5 compilations, but they will be scored on a lower scale. The compilations, for instance, will be as such for a list of 10:

#1--25 votes
#2--19 votes
#3--16 votes
#4--14 votes
#5--12 votes
...
#10--2 votes

but for a list of five, it'd be like:

#1--25 votes
#2--16 votes
#3--12 Votes
#4--8 Votes
#5--4 Votes

Lists must be of either 20 or 10 (or 5, in the case of the comps). Lists of 13 will have the bottom three chopped, etc. Too difficult to score.

This part is subject to change if people don't like it. I think it works well.

BLURBS:

I'd like to get a substantial number of blurbs for this, even if not every album is covered--I think it'd be a lot more enjoyable to read or whatever. So what I'd like you all to do is that when you vote, put a star or something next to albums you'd be willing to write a small blurb for (or a large one, if you feel like getting all deep). If you're cool with writing a blurb for anything, you godlike human being, just make a note of that somewhere. If you don't want to write blurbs, then that's fine, your list won't count for less or anything. Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.

DEADLINES:

Deadline for lists: December 15
Deadline for blurbs: December 20

That's about three weeks to put your list together, I think that's enough time. If you all need more time, I can give you some, but not too much lest the list run into the new year.

IN THIS THREAD:

I'd appreciate it if people didn't post their lists in this, or any other thread. If people disagree with me than OK, but I think that the exit polling that took place with the 90s polls sorta killed some of the mystery about the poll, and I think it'd be better going in without knowing exactly what everyone voted for.

However, what I do encourage in this thread, is some serious pimping. Three weeks is a long time, and I know that I at least would love some suggestions of albums or songs that I might have missed that I can download before sending in my list. Don't post too many as to not overwhelm people with suggestions, but if there are a couple songs, comps or albums that people feel have gone underrecognized, then by all means, recommend away--bonus points for Yousendit links!

Also in this thread, if you have any questions regarding eligibility or any suggestions regarding eligibility or voting, I'd be happy to take them.

That's all (ha!). Hope you managed to get through all of this and hope you guys are going to enjoy this poll as much as I will.

or have leaked but won't be technically released until later this year
Dumb question: what about leaked albums that aren't released until early next year?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 05:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No good because people will inevitably vote for them next year and (rightly) complain about them being inelligible because they were voted for this year.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I recommend using Microsoft Excel when tallying votes! it came in rather handy for me.

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, absolutely--last year I did one of these polls using pen-and-paper, man was that painful. I don't know if I can ever go back to that again.

Also, DJ's post reminds me of another point: All votes for remixes on the songs poll will just go towards the original song. So if someone votes for "What You Waiting For?" and someone else votes for the Lu Cont remix, they'll be counted towards the same song. And if it makes the poll, I'll note how many of the votes were for the remix. So, you can't vote for two versions of the same song, just choose the one you like best and vote for that.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 07:48 (twenty-one years ago)

What's the scoring system for a list of 20?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Why has no-one ever told me about Acclaimed Music before? All those lists.... it's.... it's.... [gasp] it's really quite beautiful!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:25 (twenty-one years ago)

what? compilations don't count as albums? remixes don't count as different songs? this is crazy!

pete b. (pete b.), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I think compilations counting as compilations makes a good deal of sense, no? And voting for remixes in conjunction with the regular songs will just get too confusing. When a remix is important though, it'll definitely be duly noted.

What's the scoring system for a list of 20?

#1=25
#2=20
#3=18
#4=17
#5=16
...
#20=1

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas soundtrack would count for comps, correct?

The Evil Dr. Bill (inabillity), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not quite sure if I'm actually supposed to answer that.

But yes.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, in case this wasn't clear from my first post, if you're voting for re-issues you should be voting based on the quality of the re-issue, not the quality of the re-issued album. So if you're voting for Ready to Die, it should be for the few bonus tracks, liner notes and the bonus DVD, not because you love the original album.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a bit weird mixing up DJ mixes with some hoary old remastered outtakes job.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Weird is not the word. Compilations should be V/A only.

RickyT (RickyT), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I would so love to see Misc "Rocket Kontrol" do well in this, but it being a limited edition 12" kind of defeats the object of wishing it well.

I will have to think of some things people actually know!

3underscore (___), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:08 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost

I wanted to make it clear to remind people that they can (and should) vote for it. Will be released only two weeks before the deadline, but it's leaked already. Check the Tracklist.

bill neil (inabillity), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

alright. let me briefly reiterate previuos album pimping.

  • if you like vitalic and /or electrohouse, please listen to richard bartz: midnight man!

  • if you like drexciya in gliding translusion / other people place mode, please listen to raiders of the lost arp : 4!

  • if you like blissfully pilled-up drum & bass that smells of cinnamon & apples, please listen to high contrast: high society!

  • if you like rough elektro with a k (that is slightly gay), please listen to david carretta - kill your radio!

  • if you like autechres inhuman coldness but dislike handle their beatwizardry, please listen to der zyklus: biometry!

  • :| (....), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

    -handle.

I would so love to see Misc "Rocket Kontrol" do well in this, but it being a limited edition 12" kind of defeats the object of wishing it well.

It's also available on their excellent, not limited at all CD.

JoB (JoB), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Will there really be enough single artist re-issues "that substantially expand upon the original album" to make including them in a poll a worthwhile exercise? I think I agree with RickyT, basically.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:44 (twenty-one years ago)

:| with some ace recommendations. i will second raiders of the lost arp, der zyklus, and high contrast. i haven't heard the other two, but i will definitely check them out.

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 16:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, with one-artist compilations, you should be more considering the skill with which the compilation was put together than the actual songs themselves, obv.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the compilations should be just that non-mixed compilations from this year (have a separate section for reissues, either stuff released on CD for the first time or released in a substantially different version.) I'd hate to see something like the MIA mix get aced out by vote splitting.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe I just don't give a toss about ranking expanded reissues, and that's my problem.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, with one-artist compilations, you should be more considering the skill with which the compilation was put together than the actual songs themselves, obv.

    This is 'obv.'?

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anybody wants to see the reissued "London Calling" or "Crooked Rain" winning the comps poll.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know whether I should vote for "What You Waiting For" original or remix. They're both great, but I don't want votes to be split.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

    they won't be split

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

GWEN STEFANI - WHAT YOU WAITING FOR (JACQUES LE CONT REMIX)

this is a completely formulaic lu cont remix (ie. it's great), but the lyrics to the song are pretty bad.

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you mean? "Tick-tock tick-tock tick-tock what you waiting, what you waiting, what you waiting for?" is pretty much all one needs in a lyric.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the "tick-tock" part! it's the rest of the lyrics that are craptacular. being a pop star is so hard and stuff!!!!

    it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 26 November 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't really paid much attention to them. They sound OK if you don't try to think what they're about, I guess.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Will there really be enough single artist re-issues "that substantially expand upon the original album" to make including them in a poll a worthwhile exercise? I think I agree with RickyT, basically.

I don't see why not. There were a real good number of two-disc re-issues of classic 10th anniversary albums this year.

    This is 'obv.'?

I thought so. Neil Young's new one-disc hits album, for example, would obviously be great just taken as the songs alone, but when considering the breadth of his career, his previous history of comps, inclusions and exclusions, etc., then it might not be so classic.

I don't know whether I should vote for "What You Waiting For" original or remix. They're both great, but I don't want votes to be split.

This, Sanjay and others, is exactly why remixes and originals are going to be counted as the same song. So don't worry which one you vote for, it's all going to the same place. No vote-splitting.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i like the "tick-tock" part! it's the rest of the lyrics that are craptacular.

Uh, hello, TAKE A CHANCE YOU STUPID HO. That is the lyrical pinnacle of "What You Waiting For?", obv.

My brain is teh drunk but I have reread this thread several times and am still not sure I understand. Can someone confirm that the MIA vs Diplo mix is an album not a compilation?

The Lex (The Lex), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Bill - it's just all a bit Mojo for me, thinking about giving prizes for reissue values. I mean, that's fine, if that's what you're into - but it would seem kind of meaningless to rank those kind of qualities against a good DJ mix.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Lex - I guess it's a kind of mix of (mostly) one artist. So err - I dunno.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

See this is why the compilation category is stupid. Just have albums and singles and leave it at that.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:09 (twenty-one years ago)

it's all very clear Bill. stop nitpicking - as you said Alba, it doesnt really matter.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

    Hurrah for Bill!

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

    : )

jed_ (jed), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'll leave the comps section alone - I don't see how I can rank V.A. comps against mixes against reissues with bonus tracks in any way that would make any sense to me. Weirdly, I'm not sure I know twenty new albums this year that I really want to vote for, which disturbs me rather. I've been buying a lot more old stuff than new.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 26 November 2004 23:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, sorry, I obv. didn't see the part about remixes.

Another question I hope hasn't already been answered: can we vote for "compilations" in the general album category, too? (Like pitchers who get votes for MVP?)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I reading this right - if I think there are only ten songs worth voting for this year, my #10 gets fewer points (2) than if I put it 10 out of 20 (10)?

If people vote strategically, doesn't that mean ten filler tracks will receive votes just to bump up the ones they actually care about? (This is all much more applicable to albums)

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 27 November 2004 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is beyond confusing. Or maybe I'm just stupid.
But I honestly don't see how a remix and the original can count as the same vote! There are so many remixes where the remix absolutely destroys the original...or where they might as well be entirely different songs.

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 27 November 2004 04:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Am I reading this right - if I think there are only ten songs worth voting for this year, my #10 gets fewer points (2) than if I put it 10 out of 20 (10)?
That's the incentive to get you to vote for 20 albums/songs, instead of 10.

Then, after the list is tabulated, I'll ask the people who volunteered to write blurbs about albums that made the list. They'll have a week to do so.
    ....
    Deadline for lists: December 15
    Deadline for blurbs: December 20

Just to clarify one more thing ... I assume the list will need to be tabulated right away, so we'll likely get the blurb requests on the 16th, giving us four days to complete them, yes?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 05:26 (twenty-one years ago)

But I honestly don't see how a remix and the original can count as the same vote! There are so many remixes where the remix absolutely destroys the original...or where they might as well be entirely different songs.

Or how about how the Andreas Churchill remix of "What You Waiting For" is stupid and boring, even though the original song and the LuCont remix are both great!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

(I actually don't care; I just wanted to make that point!)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand the incentive angle, but the value escapes me. I don't know why you'd reward someone for throwing votes to albums they were ambivalent toward and punish someone for only voting for albums they cared about.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:38 (twenty-one years ago)

You're twisting the logic -- without such a points system, you'd be punishing the people who vote for more albums because they're giving votes to #11-#20, making it more likely that those albums could overtake their true favourites #1-#10 once all the votes are counted. And therefore rewarding people who vote for fewer albums, whether they do so strategically or not.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The people who vote for 11-20 by choice (those not attempting to avoid the penalty) do so because they care about the albums, so it's not really a punishment. Favorites remain essentially the same points-wise whether you vote for the last ten or not.

People who vote for fewer albums get the same number of points at 10 as they would have at 20 - so it absolutely hurts the last album they vote for by eight points no matter what. Your reward is pure chance - one, that the points awarded at 15 would be a difference-maker and that the voter's bottom 10 would be popular enough to be relevant. The chances of both happening are slim, so any reward is unlikely.

I still don't see the value in encouraging people to vote for more albums/tracks than they would otherwise choose to vote for.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:12 (twenty-one years ago)

People who vote for fewer albums get the same number of points at 10 as they would have at 20 - so it absolutely hurts the last album they vote for by eight points no matter what.
Again -- hence the incentive to vote for more albums. Because without a system like the one Dr. Bill devised, people who vote for more albums are potentially punishing their favourites, which is obviously a point that was lost on you, because you wrote:
Your reward is pure chance - one, that the points awarded at 15 would be a difference-maker and that the voter's bottom 10 would be popular enough to be relevant.
Nonsense. Take a look at the 90's poll and see how close some of the point totals were -- seven or eight points could have made a sizeable difference in loads of cases.
If several people put an album in their #11-#20 slots (and there is absolutely no reason to believe that these bottom ten would "not be popular enough to be relevant -- again, go look at the exit polls for the 90's poll and see how many albums in people's bottom ten/fifteen made the top 20 in the end results) then that could easily be a 30-60 point difference.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

    # if you like rough elektro with a k (that is slightly gay), please listen to david carretta - kill your radio!

I really like "kill your radio", especially the second half, when suddenly the albums turns into an EBM frenzy and leaves you with a "hey, weren't nitzer ebb great?" feeling.

this system resmbles the electoral college

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Saturday, 27 November 2004 09:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't notice this points thing before. wtf?

I haven't even got 20 full albums released in 2004, let alone 20 I love. The idea that my vote should count for less because I only vote for ten seems like highly dubious acquisition-obsessive record collector nonsense to me.

Bruner's "Ah, but if we didn't have this new rule then people's lower choices would be effectively fighting against their higher ones" seems highly specious. As milo says, people are voting for these albums. If you're of the opinion that higher placings are all, and we musn't allow albums that lots of people quite like to do well, then fine, argue for proportionately more points being given to the higher end of people's polls.

I mean, wow - in the last poll people were asking whether by voting for fewer than the maximum, their votes would be worth propotionately more (ie. whether a system of everyone having a certain number of points to allocate however they wished was in operation). I wouldn't argue for that, but that would be easier to argue for than swinging it in completely the other direction.

I suppose it doesn't really matter - I'll just bulk out my albums with ones that I think I'd like, based on what I've heard, but it seems a bit daft that I have to do this.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry Bill - it's just all a bit Mojo for me, thinking about giving prizes for reissue values. I mean, that's fine, if that's what you're into - but it would seem kind of meaningless to rank those kind of qualities against a good DJ mix.

Look, if enough people agree with you about this I'm more than willing to change. I've never done a comps poll before, so I'm fairly inexperienced with it. I personally think it'd be cool to see the Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain re-issue rubbing elbows with Erlend Oye and M.I.A., but if everyone else disagrees, then we'll change. Like I said, it's all flexible.

Another question I hope hasn't already been answered: can we vote for "compilations" in the general album category, too?

No, I don't think that'd make too much sense. Like a wise man once said, you gotta keep 'em separated.

Can someone confirm that the MIA vs Diplo mix is an album not a compilation?

I don't know what this is, exactly.

If people vote strategically, doesn't that mean ten filler tracks will receive votes just to bump up the ones they actually care about?

I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone on ILM hasn't heard 20 songs this year worth voting for--even albums, it's fairly doubtful. Most of the people that will submit lists of 10 just won't want to figure it out beyond that, and I think that there should be incentive for more interesting lists of 20. It's not like it's that big a deal, anyway--the max and min. are still the same. If you care enough about your #9 album getting 12 votes instead of 4, you should also probably care enough to make a list of 20.

This is beyond confusing. Or maybe I'm just stupid.
But I honestly don't see how a remix and the original can count as the same vote! There are so many remixes where the remix absolutely destroys the original...or where they might as well be entirely different songs.

It's not as confusing as it all seems--I just put a lot of rules and regulations up as a pre-emptive measure (although I guess it's not working, so mayhbe it is confusing). Really just vote for 20 albums 20 songs and 10 comps and you should be cool.

If you can make a good case for a remix being linked to its original essentially in name only, I'd consider it being counted separately, but ultimately I think it's fairly silly and results in pointless vote splitting and such.

Just to clarify one more thing ... I assume the list will need to be tabulated right away, so we'll likely get the blurb requests on the 16th, giving us four days to complete them, yes?

Oh, my mistake--that should have said the 22nd for when the blurbs are due. I'll get the list out on the 15th. You'll have a week to write blurbs.

this system resmbles the electoral college

    Not really.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope this doesn't just come across as whinging. Bill was good enough to say:

This part is subject to change if people don't like it. I think it works well.

So I think it's fair enough to say when we don't like it.

    x-post

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I find it very, very hard to believe that anyone on ILM hasn't heard 20 songs this year worth voting for--even albums, it's fairly doubtful.

Well, seriously - I just find buying (or copying) and taking in a whole album quite an undertaking. I can't do it for more than one a week, and the majority of albums I get are not single artist ones from 2004. I'm often catching up with 2002 and 2003, let alone all the older stuff. Plus I buy a lot of compilations. So, err - believe me!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Fine, forget the whole point thing. Votes for 10 albums will now be treated like the top ten of a list of 20. It's not worth causing this much debate over.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:15 (twenty-one years ago)

    Nice one!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Thinking about the comps, though--will people have enough to vote for if re-issues and best-ofs are eliminated from running? It seems like all but the experts might have trouble with that--off the top of my head, I'm not sure if I could even name five good DJ or v/a comps I've heard from this year.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

About the remix thing - I agree with your plan that you should just pool all the votes and then make mention of which remixes are mentioned. Just one query - with something like Kelis's 'Trick Me', which was originally released last year as a track on Tasty - presumably the Basement Jaxx or Tiefschwarz remixs are OK to vote for, because they only came out this year? But what about non-remixed singles off 2003 albums? If an album keeps getting pumped for singles, are they OK to vote for (even if they turned up as album tracks in polls from last year)?

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I addressed this in my first post:

If it was released on an album last year but not as a single until this year (i.e. Jay-Z's "99 Problems), it is eligible. If it was released as a single last year but did not chart in your home country until this year (i.e. Yeah Yeah Yeahs' "Maps" in the U.S. or Khia's "My Neck, My Back" in the U.K.), it is eligible.

So "Trick Me" counts just the same as its remixes.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

    Sorry - missed that.

Oh, and in answer to your comps question, well personally, yeah, I think that combinesd I'd have almost as many v/a and mix cds to vote for as I would single artist ones. I'm probably atypical in that regard, but as before, people don't have to use up all their votes. Offering 10 for this rather than 20 seems fine to me.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

If the votes count the same now however many we vote for, does this mean that the problem with, and therefore prohibition of, choosing 13 albums vanishes?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 27 November 2004 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

    its still bad luck.

    :| (....), Saturday, 27 November 2004 11:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see how I can rank V.A. comps against mixes against reissues with bonus tracks in any way that would make any sense to me

I don't see how I can rank one song against another in any way that would make any sense to me. But I might give it a whirl, for shits and giggles.

Acme (acme), Saturday, 27 November 2004 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

    singles pimping #1:

  • if you think vitalics sonorous delirium, alden tyrells retro space ambience, and the every-beat-phased-in stunt of einmusiks "devotion" would make a great combination (shame on you if you dont!), JOHN LORD FONDA: MUSIC IS NOT A COMPUTER ALGEBRA (DARK CLUB MIX) may just be for you. actualy the whole voltage ep is beyond great - the epic e comedown weepie "so far away" may even be better than "algebra", depending on your mood. yousendit, 8 mb.

I NEED to remind everyone that MTA2, David Banner's album, came out in late december, after anyone could vote for it (I believe) and that it is a great album ppl should be voting for.

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Saturday, 27 November 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

"Galang" by MIA got its official UK release a couple of months ago so is eligible...

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

What do you mean by 'official'? It was released in Summer 2003, just on a smaller label.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

However, it didn't chart last year (or this year, mind you), so I guess under Dr Bill's rules it's eligible. Hurrah!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

regardless of how the points/album thing shakes out, i think it's a valid idea that people who haven't heard 20 albums from this year deserve less credit in an end-of-the-year poll than those who have.

i'm sure they're still nice people though.

    andrew s (andrew s), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

by 'official' I mean that I saw CD singles of it in HMV.

    xpost

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Under most sane criteria "Galang" is eligible for this year.

So have we agreed that it's just 20 albums and 20 songs and go to it? Or is twenty albums, twenty songs, 5 comps, 5 mixes, 5 reissues?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm sure they're still nice people though.

    Oh, I am!

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Another great idea: only those with politics degrees should be allowed to vote in elections.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I will not vote for comps, mixes and reissues. Making lists of them is not fun for me.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Also I am at least 20 years away from caring about reissues.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to agree, though I do want to see Dave Godin's 4th volume of Deep Soul Treasures get some recognition. Maybe I'll just vote for that.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not having heard 20 albums that's the problem, it's that there aren't 20 that I want to vote for as serious favourites. I don't want to pad the lower part with things that I am meh about to make sure my top ten or so get the full points, so I'm pleased I can stop at fewer than 20 if I want. Songs will be hard to get down to 20.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 27 November 2004 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs will be almost impossible to get down to 20, for me.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried to do a rough 20 songs earlier and nearly cried when Dizzee Rascal and JC Chasez ended up outside it.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Bruner's "Ah, but if we didn't have this new rule then people's lower choices would be effectively fighting against their higher ones" seems highly specious.
And yet, it is completely true. Sure, we can argue about the philosophy of hurting your top picks by voting for other, more widely popular albums, but that's exactly what happens. Anyhow, this point is moot now, so on with the pimping:

Beef Terminal -- The Isolationist. Despite the title, this isn't nearly as claustrophobic as his past albums. The title track and "January Sun" sound wistful to my ears, and overall this is easily his most melodic effort. He's lost a lot of the floaty ambient moments too, so you found yourself skipping over those tracks in the past, I think you'll find more to chew on here.

Oren Ambarchi -- Grapes From the Estates. Those who gave Keith Fullerton Whitman a chance last year should throw in their hat with Ambarchi this year.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I meant it's a highly specious basis for allowing those with fewer votes fewer points. Of course it's true in itself.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(I could never imagine caring about my lower choices 'harming' my higher ones - overall they're still budging out ones not on my list)

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

That's exactly my point -- nobody sits around thinking about potentially harming certain choices on their list by voting for other albums. We're casting votes FOR albums/tracks, it's supposed to be a POSITIVE thing.

It still doesn't make it (the harming) any less true, though.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

    AARRRRGHHHHHHH!

Right, I'm actually going to stop talking about this now. You can have the last word.

Alba (Alba), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

If the votes count the same now however many we vote for, does this mean that the problem with, and therefore prohibition of, choosing 13 albums vanishes?

Technically yes but I still really wish you wouldn't.

    "Galang" is eligible as fuck.

So have we agreed that it's just 20 albums and 20 songs and go to it? Or is twenty albums, twenty songs, 5 comps, 5 mixes, 5 reissues?

No, Alex, it's still 20 albums, 20 songs and 10 (at the moment still all-inclusive) comps. Don't vote for it if you don't want to.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 27 November 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 08:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I would lime to pimp for the following:

Holly Golightly - Slowly But Surely
It seems as if this album is being overlooked, despite it being better than the excellent Truly She Is None Other. This is like "No Expectations"-style Stones crossed with organ-based blues and it's pretty amazing.

Giant Sand - Is All Over the Map
First GS release of new songs since Chore of Enchantment, and it's great! I'm always dubious about Howe Gelb projects, since they tend to have a fair amount of filler, but this one is pretty much filler-free, Howe is "on" throughout this album.

    Kylie Minogue - Body Language
'04 release stateside! Don't forget it! I don't know what placing I'll give "Chocolate", but it's a top 5 track at least. The more I listen to this, the more I like it.

"Slow", "Promises", "Secret", "Red Blooded Woman", etc...these are all fantastic tracks.

Daddy G's DJ Kicks compilation should also be noted, it's a fantastic addition to the series, one of the best.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

    Attention, The Good Dr. Bill

After you have displayed the top 100? results of the 2004 albums poll on ILM, you could make use of Rate Your Music to provide a pictorial summary list.

    see an indicative example:

Uncut New Albums Of The Year 2004
    A list by dfcook
    http://rateyourmusic.com/lists/list_view/list_id_is_12509
The top 70 albums of 2004 as voted for by the writers of Uncut magazine (Dec 2004 issue)

Rate Your Music is easy to set up for lists, each album has a numbered code which includes the front cover of the album.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:26 (twenty-one years ago)

So this would be good for posterity after the lists are all over, right?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

correct, you can still do the traditional reverse counting of results on ILM.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Sunday, 28 November 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm I should do that for the '90s poll

also my gmail address works, yep!

Riot Gear! (Gear!), Sunday, 28 November 2004 22:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay. Another question (sorry): the reason I asked if compilations could count on the albums list is because there's only one compilation I've actually heard this year, and I want it to count somewhere. It would ordinarily be in my top 10 albums, but it obviously can't be the only compilation I pick, either (I'm assuming a list of one won't be counted).

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(Actually, now that I think about it, I've heard THREE compilations. But a list of three won't count, either, and as it stands, I'd be padding that list anyway with the other two!)

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

    Thanks for bumping this!

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

so can we get a ruling on David Banner Good Dr Bill?

artdamages (artdamages), Monday, 29 November 2004 18:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no reason why a list of one wouldn't be counted, Sanjay.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 29 November 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Lists must be of either 20 or 10 (or 5, in the case of the comps).

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 18:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but he scrapped the idea of penalising people who didn't vote for all 20 or 10.

I assume that with that, the 20/10/5 rule was dropped, as it was only there because otherwise his penalty points system was too complicated.

    Bill? Can you confirm?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 29 November 2004 18:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry, Sanjay, comps are no good for the albums poll.

    David Banner is a go.

And yes, I'm not happy about it, but I suppose the 20/10/5 rule has been dropped.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

But even I agree that it's silly to submit a list of one.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

So is DJ Kicks an album or a comp? What about MIA? Does Arthur Russell's Calling out of Context count as an album or a comp? Where do mixtapes fit in?

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Might as well fess up, my question is all about Erlend Oye's DJ Kicks.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Mixtapes, Arthur Russell and DJ Kicks are all comps. If someone will explain to me what the MIA thing is, I can rule on that as well.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

MIA = unreleased acapellas (+ other acapellas, including the Clipse) over instrumentals of b-more club, favela funk, crunk, bhangra etc. Sort of the best argument against having a seperate 'compilations' section I've seen. Plus, I mean, if its an album its an album, right? No matter who collaborated to make it?

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm pretty sure the M.I.A. should be counted as a comp. Sorry Deej.

You guys really can't have it both ways with this. Do you want the comp section or not?

Fuck it, I'll make a thread.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

But it is a one-artist album, it's listed as being by M.I.A.!

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Who wanted a separate section for comps in the first place?

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If it's not an album of mostly new, original (non-remixed) material, it's a comp.

Vote in the other thread, Deej.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Robin Goad, MiR, DJ Martian and others were arguing for it in the brainstorm thread. And I think it's a great idea.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a great idea if you've actually heard more than a couple comps this year.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

"If it's not an album of mostly new, original (non-remixed) material, it's a comp. "

That sounds like Reissues and Best ofs, not that MIA record.

danh (danh), Monday, 29 November 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

We got rid of the pick-20 rule, but do you have to pick at least ten albums in order to vote?

I am more inclined to bother with voting than I might be normally since at least one CD I'm picking may get one other vote, and another one will probably have several other people voting for it--so there's a chance of my vote mattering.

    La_Rue, Monday, 29 November 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

    No.

    But you really should.

(Also, I wasn't thinking about Folkloriko, which at least sundar might vote for.)

    But you really should.

I don't hear as much as most ILMers. (Of course I could disqualify myself in that case.) I will try to go for ten.

    La_Rue, Monday, 29 November 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

How much of the stuff was previously released?

Aside from Galang (and one or two others?) none of the acapellas were. Many of the beats were never released outside of the mixtape circuit from their respective homes (Rio, Baltimore) and some beats (i.e. Big Pimpin) were previously released.

    djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 29 November 2004 21:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

hobart paving - yes, it's on my 12" of it anyway.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm suspicious of the lack of R&B on my list - I suspect I haven't been hearing the right things in that area this year.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Alba I'm interested to know how you feel about the conflict you described in your elephants thread in light of the stuff you seem to be into of late. Stuff like the "Durch Die Nacht" remix or Superpitcher generally seems to perfectly dissolve or skirt past it.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey - I'd forgotten my elephants. I'll get back to you on that one, Tim.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 1 December 2004 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

13 days left. I've only gotten about five lists.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm desperately trying to get hold of albums I think I might want to vote for.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

    I'll be voting soon, Bill.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, the elephants thing is occupying my mind.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

By the way, I'd like to note that I find preferring the RTD version of "Heartbeats" to the original is slightly nutty.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Question: Does a track redone this year count on the songs list?

danh (danh), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

    example.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:12 (twenty-one years ago)

    Smile stuff

danh (danh), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:24 (twenty-one years ago)

    oooh, tough one.

Yeah, go for it, but just don't put "Good Vibrations" as #1 just 'coz it's "Good Vibrations," y'know?

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Thursday, 2 December 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

That's one I've been struggling with too - I can just about assess Smile as a new album, but I'm finding it very hard to think of slightly different versions of Good Vibrations and Heroes And Villains as 2004 tracks.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 2 December 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

    two weeks pass...
    Bump this shit.

The board's back, people start voting.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

    When is the deadline?

adam... (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Tuesday, 21 December 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Jan 3rd is the new deadline.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 22 December 2004 07:08 (twenty-one years ago)

    boom

stephen morris (stephen morris), Saturday, 25 December 2004 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I got like, a whole rush of these a couple days ago. Then nothing.

    Keep it up, people.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Saturday, 25 December 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

    allow me to bump thee

    Mike O. (Mike Ouderkirk), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 02:14 (twenty-one years ago)

getting more and more of these.

    Keep 'em coming.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 07:05 (twenty-one years ago)

tell us who is currently winning and maybe then more people will vote

Frankenstein On Ice (blueski), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 11:19 (twenty-one years ago)

how many people have gotten back to you?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

    21 singles, 24 albums.

tell us who is currently winning and maybe then more people will vote

Switchfoot (albums) and J-Kwon (singles), but it's anybody's game, really.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:41 (twenty-one years ago)

    wait, so, I'm stupid:
    no "nomination" process,
    just straight voting?

    Haibun (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

    that's correct.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Wednesday, 29 December 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

    28 singles, 31 albums.

    Keep it up.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Friday, 31 December 2004 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

    Is this sufficient?
    http://rateyourmusic.com/lists/list_view/list_id_is_15027

(As for the 20 albums, I mean. I am an albums guy and have trouble thinking of tracks)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

    works for me.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 2 January 2005 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

    One more day to vote.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Sunday, 2 January 2005 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

    bounce to the top.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 3 January 2005 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

And again. Incidentally, most English people don't come back holidays till tomorrow, and most Scots not till Wednesday. Don't know what the situation is in other countries. Just wondered if for that reason, a further two day extension might make a difference to number of votes cast. But understand that you're probably fed up with postponements.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 3 January 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll try to be lenient with last-last-minute shit. I don't want to extend too much longer because I think the board's tolerance for year-end lists will be running on empty by late January (especially if I still need time to assign blurbs, which I may or may not be doing)
