Basement Jaxx - "Good Luck"
Much as I love modern dance music, my greatest love is old soul music, and my teen love was rock music. Basement Jaxx have been maybe the most consistently wonderful act of any kind to have come along in the last decade, and the tracks I've always loved most have tended to be the ones with the potent, fiery and soulful female vocals - this is now alongside 'Red Alert' as one of my all-time favourites of theirs. It's a spectacularly thrilling performance, which is what BJ deserve, with their fantastically energetic and exciting music. -Martin Skidmore
Other ILXors Say:
"It's not really a "we are HERE!" song. How many times should the Jaxx say "we are HERE", anyway?" -Donut Bitch
"I find it hard to believe there's a song better than "Good Luck" that was released in 2003." -DJDee2005

Annie - "Me Plus One"
So 'Chewing Gum' may be nominal Best Single Ever and 'Heartbeat' looks set to solve third world debt/broker global unity by the end of 2005 but on first play, this was the sparkliest gem in the Anniemal crown – heady and elastic, luscious and buoyant, a standalone paeon to resilience and optimism in the face of isolation. Annie is desolate but Annie will not revel in it, Annie Will Get On, because, who knows what's/who's just around the corner? So she dons her crash helmet, discreetly metamorphoses into Cristina For The Xenomania Generation and crisply vogues through fluorescent lagoons of molten glee, shimmying through the tropics with her intrepid team of celestial multitracked backing voxsters, and splashy bass is spanked, and bubbles burst percussively, and Tribe Annie lurch into the sunshine on another glorious expedition, and it is D.I.F.F.I.C.U.L.T. but this only serves to make it more B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L. because on this one occasion Annie is cackling in the face of potential disappointment, revelling in the tentative, basking in the joy of wrangling with logistics as she concludes that the best things come to those who wait and the pops-topping strength drawn from her prospective Other is worth throwing caution to the wind and risking rejection/heartbreak for. Annie is a glass-half-full kind of lady. Annie is wise. Alex in Doncaster
"'Me Plus One' MUST be the third single. It's the 2nd coming of 'Let's Hear It For The Boy'." -B.A.R.M.S.

Animal Collective - "Who Could Win a Rabbit?"
The most eagerly joyful song on Sung Tongs, "Who Could Win a Rabbit" follows the tripped-out, equally stimulating "Leaf House" with a vigorous campfire sing-along, complete with a burst of restlessly strummed guitars and a steady sheet of shakers. The ensuing babble is highly infectious, too: many times I've caught myself whisper-singing "hungry bread-and-butter hustle" or, simply, "a rabbit, a habit, a rabbit, a habit," like it was some kind of weird nature-kid mantra. -Jaymc

What I want to know is: how did Dizzee come up with this idea? T.I. - "Rubberband Man"
Hip-Hop Trends “Rubberband Man Will Hopefully Perpetuate:
1. Repeating the song’s producer’s name several times before the song kicks off. Helpful to us rap amateurs. 2. The use of Playboy Bunny CD-Making factories in music videos. New Jack City’s topless crack facilities taken to their logical extreme. 3. Lyrical references to the Taliban. If we can’t laugh, we’d have to cry. 4. Southern Rap that sounds this joyous and celebratory. And no, it’s not just because there are kids singing on the chorus. 5. Jazzy Phe dancing around in the back of every video. Wait, he already does that. -The Good Dr. Bill

Kanye West - "Through the Wire"
A great advantage of being your own producer is that you can synch everything up perfectly. Such is the case with "Through The Wire"--Kanye's rhymes are nothing technically spectacular and the narrative is just a simple, self conscious retelling of a personal (and quite nasty) misfortune. Yet, combined with the giddy backing track of a chipmunk speed Chaka Khan, off beat handdrums, handclaps, and ripping bass playing, it's clear that "Through The Wire" is a celebration of life from a guy who almost didn't make it, and leave it to the guy with the near-death experience and wired jaw to know how to make it fun for everyone. -DOPESMOKER
"I for some reason get really moved by [the video for] Kanye West's Through the Wire....it's kinda like his scrapbook or something, very nostalgic." -Matt Helgeson

33. Kings of Convenience – “I’d Rather Dance With You
Erlend Øye's foray into the DJ game had a lot of people wondering whether any of it would rub off onto the latest Kings of Convenience record. For the most part, it didn't, with the wonderful exception of this cut, an uptempo bossanova anchored by a rhythmic string quartet. The scene is a party or a club, and the woman that Øye's flirting with is presumably of the "fit but she's chatty" sort. The straightforward shut-up-and-dance strategy that our narrator adopts provides a nice counterpoint to the song's sophisticated pizzicato bounce. Apart from the lovely "Misread," no other track on the sorta-boring Riot On an Empty Street comes close to matching its heights. -Jaymc

Ghostface f/ Jadakiss - "Run"
Run! The highpoint of his Pretty Toney Album, the Killah's paranoia-soaked tale of fleeing from the cops is totally different to the string-drenched soul samples of the rest of the album - it's all police sirens and horns and Ghostface bawling away at a million miles an hour. Run! You can't fault his acting out the role of the pursued hustler - listen to him gasping for breath as Jadakiss enters the fray. Run! Jada's verse isn't as wound-up, but his close-to-the-mic delivery keeps the pressure bubbling. Run! -Haitch
"...and why are Ghostface and Jadakiss on the run in the first place? Why, they were caught, George Michael style, in a public bathroom. These cocksuckers got nerve raps Ghostface, and he isn't talking about the police..." -JoB

Felix da Housecat - "Ready 2 Wear"
In the pantheon of songs that recall Depeche Mode's "Get the BalanceRight", this track has obliterated my former favourite, Covenant's "Dead Stars". Both have that electro-bounce, the sense of flashing lights and spinning disco balls, but "Ready 2 Wear" trumps Covenant by being the slickest, sexiest track I've heard in ages. The cheesy, evocative synth riff is pure 1982, and the smooth, drawling vocals are the drama-free cousin to Clapton's overwrought "Wonderful Tonight" -- "yes, yes, honey you look fucking fantastic in that, now let's dance". A stellar testament to the Power of Clothes. -MindInRewind

Kylie Minogue - "I Believe in You"
If Kylie was just some typical pop moppet, she'd no doubt be nothing more than footnote in an I Love 1998 programme. That she's still producing work as good as “I Believe in You 17 years on, when others would have slid into self parody or tired retreads is pleasantly surprising for those who remember the gauche young, ingenue from Ramsay street. Scissor Sisters’ Jake Shears helps manage the neat trick of going back to the optimism and sensuality of classic disco while sounding utterly prescient. What could have been a calamitous exercise in camp instead works as an elegant, sophisticated performance. “I Believe in You is a sparkling glitterball of a record. -Billy Dods

Freiland - "Frei / Hot Love" (Justus Kohcnhe f/ Meloboy)
Justus Köhncke takes 'Frei' – perhaps the most joyfully tight and straightforward 'THIS IS SCHAFFEL!' track there is – and welds it to its rhythmic forefather, glam, with serious 'who needs chemicals?' results. When I hear it, I think of it being dropped into a roomful of people ready to peak, but with no idea that they're going to peak to a camp german disco version of a T-Rex song. Girls Aloud - "Love Machine"
If the Xenomania soundlab is increasingly staffed by jagged electro shards and characterised by glistening chromey surfaces then at first this seemed somethingof an anomaly; Girls Aloud do backalley skiffle shuffle via washboard and elastic band, state-of-the-art-ery kept to a minimum as Real Instruments! assume control and all involved whirl back into oldendaye thymes and make a wholesomely organic record For The Dads, or something... but ahhhh, we cannot be fooled, because this is reallyjust a deft restringing of the GA/Higgins bow; every bit as precision-tooled and synth-succulent as anything else on the album and considerably lighter on its feet, they are kitty cats and likewise it is and it scampers and thrums as giddily and deliriously and irresistably as any single this year. The snowballing genius of Girls Aloud is that EVERY record is a statement of intent, cutesy/steely sloganeering shoehorned into every available crevice; eskimos, tigers, Two Tribes, every line geniusly self-consciously throwaway in a way that only the truly agonised-over can be; this record is like being mugged by rainbows inside a kaleidoscope and it is made by the best group in the world. -Alex in Doncaster

Soulwax - "NY Excuse"
Unrivaled king of the American dance underground, James Murphy waved his magic wand over two singles in 2004, which somewhat uncoincidentally also turned out to be the two best dance songs of the year. One, LCD Soundsystem’s “Yeah, stunned with tension, never revealing what it would choose to unleash on you next, but the other, Soulwax’s “NY Excuse, was all release. Just when you want the beat to kick in, it does, just when you want them to get louder, they do, just when you want the song to release you from its grip, it complies. The song even provides cues (“I didn’t shout! Well, start making me then!) just to let you know how far ahead of you it is. And they say discopunk is over? Umm...excuse me? -The Good Dr. Bill

Girls Aloud - "The Show"
I liked this the first instant I heard it, and kinda sensed I'd get tired of it soon. Thankfully, I was wrong. The weird structure is one of the key aspects of its allure: it's ALL CHORUS! Wasting no time, right after the 15-second intro "The Show" hungrily plunges into the first chorus, with the girls fighting for space against the towering crunchy synths which almost eat the whole track up like a "Milkshake" bassline...and then it switches lanes to the long second chorus, sleek and sassy, split into two or three choruses, orbiting above the molasses of neon sparkle. And then the beat stops, a shower of glittery synth notes rains down, and the track plunges straight back into the first chorus, combat-ready as ever! The lyrics don't make any goddamn sense, but it's the least of worries when caught in the relentless stealth drama of it all. -Mind Taker

The Streets - "Blinded By the Lights"
“One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer for the E generation. -The Good Dr. Bill
"I love it! It's so sad. The strobing stagger of that beat is so on point - slow panic at realizing that you're doing it big just to keep from going nuts, instead of to add rapture to an already satisfied you (like you used to)." -LC

The Shapeshifters - "Lola's Theme"
'Lola's Theme' is a great one for inspiring false memory syndrome. I keep believing I first heard it out clubbing, the euphoric anthem of 3am eternal on some beach somewhere. But I didn't. I just heard it recommended on an ILM filterdisco thread, downloaded it and listened to it a lot on my iPod. I even associate it with Glastonbury. But I don't think I head it played it there either. It was the week afterthat that it really stuck, listening to it and Mylo at night in the fields at the back of my parents' house. Dancing on my own. What a menko! Then all of a sudden it was on telly and the radio in some crappy mix with with daft verses added. Still, that fanfare remains as sweet, memories of a mostly-invented halcyon summer. -Alba

#25. Gretchen Wilson - "Redneck Woman"
Apropos, isn't it? What with our wannabe redneck president, red stateakshun, that Gretchen Wilson's "Redneck Woman" rocked the Billboardcharts, plus middle-country female (and male) legions in 2004. It's agimmicky single, with its built-in Shania responses (Hell yeah!) andtake-me-or-leave-me feminisms, but, dude, she's talking about buyingunderpants at Walmart and drinking beer on a "four wheel drive"tailgate. It rode or was rided by Big and Rich's own gimmicky (andlesser) single, but "Redneck Woman" is a grassroots success becauseits identity is sealed in the vast stretches of peoples of this greatcountry, the Majority--why being a redneck is suddenly, or always hasbeen, cool. It's something like Eminem's debut statement "The RealSlim Shady" -- "There's a slim shady in all of us." A redneck woman, too. -MCD

Kelis - "Trick Me"
The song which confirmed Kelis's status as the coolest woman in pop. Both casually insouciant and deeply heartfelt, it does for the word 'trick' what "Papa Don't Preach" did for the word 'baby', and in so doing contained one of the best lyrics of the year - "freedom to us has always been a trick/freedom to you has always been whoever landed on your dick" - delivered with a perfect blend of strength, sorrow and anger. Combined with that loping cod-reggae strut, the infectious "wo-oh-oh-oh"s and the Pet Shop Boys-referencing rap (Kelis doing it for herself!) - irresistible. 2004's summer anthem. -The Lex

The Streets - "Dry Your Eyes"
All's pretty low and your mates take you out for a drink, and sure they don't say it, but you know what they're thinking, because they've all been there before. Maybe they'll offer you some advice, but it's pretty run-of-the-mill, because they know it can't be put into words, so they just let you talk and talk, ramble on over your ale, and everyso often they'll punctuate it with a pat on the back and a point to the beautiful girls in the place and say, "See? Chin up, the next one's out there." And if you're lucky, maybe they'll spot you that grand you lost awhile back... -Alba

Dizzee Rascal - "Stand Up Tall"
Clearly, Boy in the Corner went to his head and where Dizzee usually relies on frenetic beats and a stuttering, tourette's suffering, delivery, here, he's spraying confidence with the simplified, cell line hook, the steady beat and the amiable (and audible!) boasts. His tempo relents and he pads the newfound space with singsong rhymes and share-the-wealth chants and for a moment, on an otherwise paranoid or headcentric record we're asked to join Dizzee's party. -Dan H.
"Stand Up Tall is classic, like igloo pitched down a few octaves and properly beefed up. love all those £10 casio strings in the top of the mix. Crap lyric about nothing, but completely hypnotic." -Soc

The Streets - "Fit But You Know It"
Grand is my favourite album of the year, but I had my doubts whether it would work split into singles - would fragments of a very cohrerent whole, chapters of a story, work on their own? This seemed the most obviousvsingle, punchy and laddish and not much of a part of the narrative. It'sv hocking to me that an idea I've heard expressed so many times, I don't think I've ever heard sung (in the broadest sense of the term, obv) before. The other thing that made this a tremendous single was the riff - it's an irrestible driving guitar force. -Martin S.

Big and Rich - "Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)"
I review the album elsewhere, but it was this that sold me on it – I talked about it on Freaky Trigger a little at the time, and it remains my favourite record of the year. It's the most exciting rock record of 2004. It's the most inspiring country record of 2004. Disco is long gone, so it's pointless saying the same of that genre, and I don't think it's the best hip hop record of the year, but it makes me smile broadly and feel like swaggering and punching the air every single time I've heard it, and that's been a lot of times. It doesn't surprise me that some loathe it, but I was still mystified that, unless I was missing something, it didn't tear up the charts over here in the UK – the U.S. was lucky to get this one. -Martin S.

Twista f/ Kanye West & Jamie Foxx - "Slow Jamz"
(copied from Stylus's year-end list)
Like so many other great hip-hop singles of 2004, "Slow Jamz" was a group effort. Kanye, with his gorgeous sped-up soul samples and clever-the-first-couple-times pop culture references, laid the ground work. Twista, given one of the great introductions in hip-hop history ("damn, baby, I can't do it that fast, but I know somebody who can!"), broke out his lightning-fast delivery, tongue twisting verses and pinchable cherubic cheeks. And Jamie Foxx, with his still-hysterical crooning about some of the lamest music in history and surreal overacting in the music video, provided the slam dunk. While the three would ultimately go on to even bigger and better things throughout the year—Foxx, for instance, shows distressingly little of the subtlety he would later bring to his performances in Collateral and Ray—with "Slow Jamz", the mission statement of three of the biggest crossover stars of 2004 was unleashed. -The Good Dr. Bill
"slow jamz is like the worst single ever!! i cant believe twista finally has a solo break and its some shit hes barely even on" -$
"I probably would like "Slow Jamz" more if they didn't give all that love to Ready For The World. Those fucks watered down "Lady Cab Driver" and I'll never forgive them." -Anthony Miccio

Franz Ferdinand - "Take Me Out"
(coped from Stylus's year-end list)
Torn between those twin pillars of crippling insecurity, emo and nu-metal, the modern rock world has recently been missing the necessary confidence, swagger, and BIG FUCKING RIFFS to give us youths a couple rock anthems to throw back in the faces of our Nirvana and Green Day-listening older brothers and our Zeppelin and Floyd-listening fathers. Enter, surprisingly enough, a group of fey, indie post-punkers from Scotland. Who came and saved the world in 2004 with "Take Me Out", one of the best and biggest rock singles of the year, and the first true classic rock tune in ages. Everything about the tune screams MASSIVE—the chant-along chorus shout, the transition from indie rock to disco at the :50 mark, and most importantly, that BIG FUCKING RIFF. It was classic the first time you heard it and it was classic the 100th time you heard it, and in 2004, not even the emo kids or nu-metallers could deny it. We'll brag to our kids about "Take Me Out" someday. -The Good Dr. Bill
"Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" is the first song that inspired me to immediately invent my own dance in ages. It's a variation on the Safety Dance except that you never actually make an S with your hands. Basically you hop around like an idiot." -Anthony Miccio

Gwen Stefani - "What You Waiting For" / Jacques Lu Cont's Thin White Duke Remix
10. Gwen Stefani – “What You Waiting For?” / “What You Waiting For (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)”
I downloaded this track along with a bunch of electribe 101 songs and burnt the whole lot onto a CD in a random order. The CD went into my discman, and I began the commute. And in the first few minutes there was a whole bunch of pleasant warbling by Billie Ray Martin and then in the next few minutes god said "let there be a synth riff". And mygod was there a synth riff. A proper touch-the-ceiling synth riff. A Van Halen's "Jump"-sized synth riff. Except it's over this kind of pretty electro beat with tick-tockery happening. And then there's some singing from La Stefani, at which point only did I realize that this wasn't actually an 80s record. And then in rolls this Peter Hook style bassline, except better ‘coz it's, like, danceable, and instantly eclipses Freeform Five's "Strangest things" for bassline of the year combining shoulder wiggle with rocky skronk in just the right proportions. And the whole thing adds up into one of those recordsthat just DOES NOT GO ON LONG ENOUGH. I mean it clocks in at about 7 minutes, I think, but it could never be enough - I firmly believe that when I go to heaven there'll be a bit of a "tick tock" at the pearly gates and when I get inside that synth riff will be playing on a constant loop for eternity. Dunno what the original sounds like, couldn't give a shit really... -Jacob W.

Annie - "Chewing Gum"
Having read a bit about this song's greatness, I visited Annie's website out of curiousity. Consequently I listened to this 22 times in a row before the shitty media player there crashed my browser. The slinky backing track is a sly nod to "Genius Of Love" by the Tom Tom Club and is as busy as any percolating electro-funk groove is ever likely to get, with a slew of clicks, whirrs, beeps and squeals courtesy of Richard X. The hilarious “men are gum who I chew up and spit out” lyric should be a duet, but Annie poses questions, then breathily replies to herself - “It makes me smile and it keeps my teeth clean”. Surely, this would be huge! And yet just as it began to rake in the plaudits and seemed ready for chart success, her record label decided on some "soft launch" nonsense, and the single withered once released on the UK charts. Oh NO, they got it all wrong, as Annie herself might have said. -Haitch

A designer beat, to get things going, effervescent AND gritty synth sounds, call-and-response-ish vocal chants in the oh-so-popular "hey" and "uh huh" form, seductive chorus and a lyrical departure, to keep things interesting, all bounded by before summer, and the song’s longevity came to an inevitable end. Four months on, most of the song's charm is worn down and the tune stands as a soiled little dance track with enough exposed, bristly details to keep it going on those dreary winter days when tales of a girl's dashed flash dreams are all some of us need for a good time. -Dan H.
"Rachel Stevens: shuffletech's ambassador to pop, or pop's ambassador to shuffletech? This isn't just about the groove though - Rachel sounds wonderfully silly, and there's these great Wicked Witch of the West Henchmen groans running through the arrangement." -Tim Finney
"Rachel Stevens however is just incredibly -nothing- banal and dispassionate in all ways possible." -grumpy bastard

Annie - "Heartbeat"
An ancient philosopher once said: “only when I'm dancing can I feel this free.” That this was Madonna shouldn't distract from the essential truth contained therein. Annie's heartbeat shares the same feeling of escape. It starts nervous, tense and coy, not sure what's going to happen then the chorus starts, stuttering at first but sunnier and more open (feel my heartbeat) then the drums comes in, in a joyful release which sets the pulse, the heart and the feet racing. There’s still some doubt and uncertainty in her, but she finally realises she must grab the moment, as it may be gone when the party ends. It shares an urgency common to all great pop records, as it tries and succeeds in capturing the mercury moment of falling in love or just the joy of being alive. Truly one of the greatest moments in pop music. -Billy Dods
"I want to feel her heartbeat." -Deej
"If I had to pick a favorite, it's probably "Heartbeat" -Matthew Perpetua

Jay-Z - "99 Problems"
For me, hip-hop minimalism in 2004 was all about Dizzee Rascal’s “Everywhere” and Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”. The former is sparse, driven by little more than a thick, stuttering bassline. On the other hand, the latter is filled to the brim with a dense, cavernous drum loop and jagged guitar samples. As if that weren’t enough, “99 Problems” ups the mimimalist ante by having a video featuring the artist and the producer doing almost nothing other than walking around looking like badasses. Huh. -MindInRewind
""99 Problems" really does get worse each time I hear it." -Dom Passantino
"I'm glad he's not pushing 99 Problems...talk about a "lets appeal to the white folks" track. Of course it's awesome, but I mean, really...they can't bang that in the clubs." -DJDee2005

Snoop Dogg f/ Pharrell - "Drop It Like It's Hot"
The Neptunes and Snoop Dogg are two artists that really needed each other in 2004. Snoop, legend though he is, has only had one real hit in the decade it’s been since Doggystyle (and guess who was helming that one, too), and The Neptunes have somewhat stagnated since the days—a mere couple years ago—where it seems like they could do no wrong. But when paired up, the results are nothing short of magical. Pharell and Chad lace a beat that snaps and buzzes like neon ice water falling on a bowl of electrically charged Rice Krispies, over which Snoop delivers what are possibly his best set of rhymes since “Doggy Dogg World,” rapping only in the Mike Skinner sense of the world, too cool to raise his voice a decibel more than necessary. In a year where the Neptunes produced the most annoying Nelly single to date and Snoop Dogg’s most notable contribution to pop culture was his appearance in Soul Plane, “Drop It Like It’s Hot” packs enough cred to keep both artists respectable well into the second half of the decade. –The Good Dr. Bill
"Holy hell, it's like "Grindin'" on codeine!" -Roger Adultery
"Yeah, it's weird: ordinarily I'd say it's WAY too minimalist for me, but there's something oddly compelling about individual bits: the SNOOOOOOOP bit, the keyboards, etc." -Jaymc
"I think "Drop It Like It's Hot" is my favorite Neptunes beat since "Got Your Money"." -Nickalicious

Usher f/ Lil' Jon & Ludacris - "Yeah!"
Irresistable disco crunk that makes you want to run out and turn on every single strobe light in the country. Unfortunately, the eurorave remix I was hoping for never materialised, and neither did Atlanta's first annual Love Parade. Can you image Lil' Jon up on one of those PA trucks, millions of gyrating honeys trying to get close, shiny beats blasting across the boulevard? Coca-Cola, make it happen. -JoB

M.I.A. - "Galang"
Taking the pop trend of making the harshest, most abrasive noises sound smooth to an extreme, MIA's debut single (which feels like it's been around forever, and still no one else has caught up to it) features volcanic off beats, bombs exploding around MIA as she darts nimbly through the minefield of an immigrant's life in south-east London. They're backed by some popping, some buzzing, some cowbells, and someone sharpening a knife. It all sounds so natural, though, whether in a club or on the street or in fucking Top Shop, where I perturbed fellow shoppers the other day by squealing excitedly when this came on the in-store radio. And that "Walk Like An Egyptian"-esque coda, just when you thought the song couldn't have gotten any better! -The Lex
"It's a kind of Bhangraesque sense assault. I love it. " -N.
"galang needs to be 4x as long as it is." -Jed

LCD Soundsystem - "Yeah"
"Yeah" is fun. It has something for everyone. It makes the indie kids dance. It's another hilarious, hipster slagging pop song. It's a rock song in the dance format (or is that the other way around). It's ear candy that just doesn't get old. What's best is it just gets better and better every minute of its epic 9:25 running length as it builds toward the "acid freakout" - like the excitement of seeing your favorite band when you're 16 canned and melted down into a hyperactive keyboard blast. I could write about how we needed a song this fun so badly in such a globally awful year, but I have a feeling that "Yeah" will be touching our fun nerves and filling dance floors for years longer than our collective moping will last. -DOPESMOKER
Other ILXors Say (besides the obvious):
"For the record, I like the first three minutes. That would be fine on its own, but the way it builds into the escalating madness of the second part of the song makes the instrumental parts that much more satisfying." -Matthew Perpetua
"Oh my god this is amazing! It's like this enormous fuck you to every other indie-dance pretender out there. How can anyone compete?" -Tim Finney
"Much like sex, I crave a cigarette when it's finished." -Johnny Fever

Britney Spears - "Toxic"
Everyone wants for their favourite artists to do well, but us Britney fans feel especially vindicated for every battle she wins. Because there are so many, many people--from rockist foes to tabloid journalists who gleefully gloat at every small gain of body fat--that really, really, REALLY want her to fail. With "Me Against The Music" they had a field day, but then "Toxic" came out and - booom!!! WHO'S LAUGHING NOW, EH? Those brief few months when "Toxic" ruled the charts were an exciting time, with just about all of my friends, one by one, falling for its charms, everyone finally agreeing this frenzied modernist juggernaut is THE SHIT. And then afterwards everyone was like "hey, this new ballad of hers ain't bad either!", and any ideas of Britney being irrelevant were rendered completely... well, irellevant! "Toxic"is maximalist, brutalist, mindless exoticism at its most glorious. Screaming Bollywood strings! Spy-western guitar! Crunchy garage beatz! Sleazy electro pulsating! The middle eight where for a moment it threatens to morph into "Rock Lobster"! And the grandest video of 2004 to boot, too. -Mind Taker

However, one thing: it needs to be reiterated that the ORIGINAL of What You Waiting For absolutely pwns the remix, which is also good but come on, not even close to the original's magnificence.

the Top 10 is mostly fine by me (LCD and the two Richard X productions all overrated IMHO, but I don't dislike them). Looking forward to the rest of the albums rundown, which has so far been really interesting, probably due to the relatively low number of voters.

Really mad looking at these results. Was that shapeshifters track really 2004? Feels much much older. Don't see what was so lol about Streets. Guy's stuff has aged/fallen out of style but it was a good album and I can see it being revisited in years to come.

yeah, it was a passable vocal house anthem. i remember thinking it sounded kind of old fashioned by at least 5-6 years at the time, but it's no doubt a catchy hit cos i can't get it out my head now.

I don't even remember anyone particularly repping for that Shapeshifters song at the time.

"lola's theme" is great just like sonique's "it feels so good" is great
the streets are definitely one of the worst acts of the past decade, even with a debut that wasn't that bad at the time

i can't believe i'd never heard the groove mix of "hot like fire" until now

I never really understood or got involved with the Big & Rich hype. Years later I did really get into "Saved" though - brilliant track.

I think Big & Rich mania was probably the last time any American music critic had an independent thought that they didnt cross-reference with Pitchfork first

WBS repped passionately for it on his UK Top 40 threads, and it was my #1 single of the year!

Sounds like a headache on a stick, as bad as the horrific displays of environmental destruction in the top tracks of 2015 list
