I adore "Mr. Brightside," currently in my Top Ten Singles Of 2005. Dunno about Kate Bosworth (dunno who that is) but Eric Roberts is in it and I think Scarlett Johannsen appears for two secons dressed like Oscar Wilde. I've got a rant about how amazing the Sophie Muller-directed video on the Killers thread. Nu-Wave is gonna blow the hell up in 2005. The song's already a pop hit! I'd say more but I don't want to repeat my countless posts on that Killers thread too much.
I didn't know that Tina Turner was back in the spotlight. What for? I haven't heard anything about her since she did that tour that came to town to support a pantyhose brand. I'm faily indifferent unless I hear some great new single. I don't really find her particularly sexy. I'm not a gams man. I should buy Private Dancer if I see it in a used vinyl rack for cheap.
You're a cool dude, Scott. Hope this clears things up.

Linkin Park definitely has done a better job of capturing different varities of angst (ninety shades of blue). I also giving them credit for writing songs about how people don't really want to be angsty any more, though I'm kind of waiting for them to write about something else (I'm hoping their Violator comes sooner than Depeche's did). Limp Bizkit is simply about the angst of one individual, one beautifully bonkers individual.

I thank you for your considered answer to my previous question. I now wish to switch gears slightly. If you found yourself between two teams of overweight ex-jocks that were respectively shouting "tastes great" and "less filling" to each other, would you join either team, mock them both, or leave quietly?

I will never find myself between two teams of ex-jocks. I am very tall and my ability to walk briskly away from unpleasant situations is something I'm grateful for. That said, I tend to be a quantity-over-quality guy when it comes to food & drink. At least until I start making more $$$.
P.S. isn't it funny how if you take every type of adolescent dude music over the last twenty years and throw it in a blender you get Linkin Park? No wonder they're so popular. If it wasn't for the angst I bet critics would be licking they ass. Sometimes I worry that all artistic/commercial breakthroughs in rock will be whine-based. I blame Robert Smith.

Surely Robert Smith is not to be blamed for such a fine development in music. However, I realize there will be differences of opinion in this regard.
My next question is: if the dude from Electric Six guest-starred on a major hip-hop artist's next single, who would the artist be, and who would the producer be, if the artist and producer were separate entities?

Despite being an obvious kneejerk answer, Dick Valentine's presence on a Lil Jon single would be kind of redundant. Rather than suggest a rapper for him to collaborate with, I'll simply dream of a world where every he re-records the vocal on every Ja Rule track ever, making the world an infinitely superior place. So I guess my answer is Ashanti (produced by Irv Gotti or whoever).

Will Creed sound better in hindsight, due to semi-ironic cheese appreciation that has helped Journey so much, and eventually be championed by a sizable number of "serious" music fans?
― My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)
Another valuable piece of information when considering Coleman vs. Lewis is that Emmanuel is tight with Lil' Jon. My friend Ned K (I may be the only person on Friendster with two Neds in his friends list) actually guessed that Webster would appear ten seconds before he did when I showed him the video for "I Don't Give A Fuck." E-Lew gets crunk. That said I don't want to think about them fighting. I wish them well. I give it to Coleman though. He seems like he has more frustration to work out.
― miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

Creed will get no more critical re-appreciation than whatever Grand Funk gets, which can't be that much. That said, I think "With Arms Wide Open" is a fine song (I hope your kid isn't like you either, Scott). "My Sacrifice" is pretty fun too. The video is a trip and I like how he opens the first single following the big hit album with "hello my friends, we meet again!"

I totally forgot it was Groundhog Day. That's really a Punxsatawney thing. I'm not much for big public shindigs anyhow. I've never been to a PSU football game and I only went to State College's First Night (a News Years Celebration) for the first time this year. The heat made all the ice sculptures melt. It looked like the horses and swans were crying.
P.S. Yes, I get tired of it. Yes, I wish they'd move on. But I'm not going to have a Patrin-style breakdown for a number of reasons (all of which I'm grateful for).
― miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)
This is a fine vision. The U2/Creed observation is also noteworthy in that the first small interview I ever read from Stapp when the first album came out was nothing but him talking about how U2 changed his fundamentalist life. I had fears from that moment forward.

Ok, I know there are some acts that infuriate and annoy with disturbing consistency but I really can't think of many off the top of my head. It would depend on the material. While I would rather they had never re-made The Haunting (the original is one of my favorite movies ever), I would like to take the cast of the atrocious Jan De Bont version and put them in a film that actually attempts to stay faithful to the spirit of the original film (no CGI). Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Lily Tomlin and Owen Wilson were perfectly cast, just given a shitacular script and a braindead director.

Dear Anothony,
I am a 19-year-old young man who is writing you from a jail cell. None of my crimes were violent. They mainly consisted of theft and drugs. I've had a bad drug problem ever since my best friend overdosed in my hotel room. I did drugs before then, but not as much as afterward.
One thing led to another, and soon I found myself behind the wheel of other people's cars and using other people's credit cards.
I have been locked up for three months now, and looking back, I can't believe the life I was living. Is there still a chance I can turn my life into a success when I'm released? And what do you recommend I do to stay sober and lead a happy life? -- TOUGH LUCK IN CHATTANOOGA
Dear TLIC,
My Aim Is True = "woah, this guy is pretty smart for an angry young snot. if only his band wasn't so generic."
This Years Model = "oh, man he's found a great band! he's totally captured the whole frustrated young guy thing."
Armed Forces = "oh, ok he has nothing to say other than Don't Be A Nazi To Me, Just Give Sex When Needed but he's gonna keep getting more pretentious and self-congratulatory with every album"
It's harsh (I like Brutal Youth actually), but if there was a moment where in hindsight he revealed what his bag was, it was then.

Somebody from my local newspaper called me today because they wanted to ask me some questions about the heroin addict that tried to rob my house. They were put in jail for 3 years today. Should I have kept my anonymity, or told them to slap my name on the front page for being an incredible crime stopper hero guy? I also would have liked to have added in some criminal style tips (puffy jackets mark you out as a theif, guy! Thats why the cops got you!). However, will this information come back to haunt me in a possible fight to the death?

All three Hot Snakes albums are wonderful. Pop-Jehu. Wipers with better lyrics. They've never written a song that I flat-out dislike, which made seeing them live wonderful - I feared nothing. Automatic Midnight is my favorite album, "Salton City" is arguably my favorite track. Pick tracks include "If Credit Matters I'll Take Credit," "Plenty For All," "10th Planet," "I Hate The Kids," "LAX," "Braintrust," "Think About Carbs," gah...so many great ones. The pope's failing health has more to do with the fact that he's 243. I'm guessing there will be at least one pope between our current one before Bono takes over. He still has to end (or at least be seen standing next to the people who end) world debt and hunger, just like in the Omega Code. Then he will create the Nu-Catholic church, which will include all rockists ever.

Will the upcoming Muppets/hip-hop version of The Wizard Of Oz be the year's cultural event?
― Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)
I don't believe in angels because dead people are either dead or off having buffets and orgies in heaven. Visiting earth would be like hanging around an abbatoir for kicks. I don't understand the first question.
― miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)
For some reason I think the next Black Eyed Peas album, if it doesn't suck, will be the biggest cultural event of 2005. I think they're primed for an awesome Thriller-type (in style if not size) release full of moving ballads, liberal political thought and fun party tracks. The singles from Elephunk were such a giant evolutionary step for those guys that one more leap and they're dynamite. Yeah they look silly but MJ wore a single diamond-studded glove.
― miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)
This is a bold claim but I am also intrigued by it, and therefore would like to hear more. If no guest collaborators have yet been announced, who would you expect/like to see on such an album?
― Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:29 (twenty years ago)
I have no expectations, really. This is just a liberal pipe dream based on the fact that I seriously underrated "Where Is The Love?" and I tend to think these things come from unexpected places - I never would have guessed how great and popular Young & The Hopeless would be judging from GC's first album singles. I'd love a fun uptempo track with Big & Rich. Fuck new Dylan, I'm looking for new Motown.

ANGELS ARENT DEAD PEOPLE THEY ARE BEINGS SPECIALLY CREATED BY GOD ALMIGHTY TO SERVE HIM. But true, dead people are stupid if they wanna hang around. Ghosts are such morons.
The first question is an evolutionary biology-related question.

I own no DMX, as I actually never really enjoyed anything I heard before "Party Up," which I didn't even know was his until a few months ago. I've been meaning to reassess his singles via Launch and will definitely consider buying "and then there was x" on the cheap if I like the other videos from it.

Tell her! Honesty is the best policy and cool girls won't be bothered by someone reaffirming that she's likeable. Just try to be kind and honest. "I say hurl. If you blow chunks and she comes back, she's yours. If she bolts, it wasn't meant to be."

yeah, where is that! I was so excited (see this article from 2002, which may have been where I got the scoop) and nothing! Though the "newsflash" page of their site hasn't been updated since aug 2003, lead singer Jimmy Pop's "Diary Of A Madman" section goes up to aug 2004. Looks like they were supposedly to finally release the album this year but it doesn't look like they've done it. They're still Big In Germany! Hope springs eternal, cuz we could use more songs like "The Bad Touch" (which I haven't thought about in ages, so thanks!).

yeah I was a little surprised by that too. I think the album has just as many decent songs as his previous works. Xgau's never been a big fan, I'm guessing that Smith's consistent pathology and eventual fate wouldn't do anything to change that.
This line from his review of Jeff Buckley's Grace reaffirms that this just isn't his type of guy: "Sensitivity isn't being wimpy," [Buckley] avers. "It's about being so painfully aware that a flea landing on a dog is like a sonic boom." So let us pray the force of hype blows him all the way to Uranus.

I wake up in the morning because I am done sleeping and should probably check my e-mail. When I was younger I used to do it because my alarm clock was going off and I had to go to school, but I never work before 1 so I don't have to set it that often. I also love life.
You probably don't have a thread like this because you don't post lots of unpredictable yet not entirely incoherent stuff. You should be more open with your opinions and share lots of random information like Limp Bizkit song lyrics and compare respected artists to ones that lack credibility with most music-lovers. You must be varied in your tastes, quick with the quip and a total fucking stud.

The five sterling examples of Da Man shown (from top to bottom), are Richard Burton, John Reis, Robert Christgau, Dick Valentine and John Huston.
Favorite moments of Burton's filmography (of what I've seen): Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf, The Spy who Came In From The Cold, Cleopatra, Hamlet (DVD of the stage performance). Still need to watch Don't Look Back In Anger. The journal excerpts in his biography are further evidence of his Da Manhood.

I have no idea but I feel your pain. Contact lenses suck. Glasses protect your eyes and never slide up inside your head. Last time I couldn't find my glasses for a long period of time it was because I left them at a party I went to the night before. Last thing I remembered was miming to "Maps" while people slow danced and the next thing I knew I was laying on my bed with a gash on my head. Thankfully the person who threw the party noticed the extra pair lying around. I never crack open the vodka after drinking beer for hours. Only leads to trouble!
Keep looking and good luck.

First off, I gotta say that its poor form for someone who gets paid to publicly dismiss bands to get pissy on an excelsior thread over a little joke (and it was a good one, btw). If you can't take the heat stop selling chili.
I don't hate the Libertines. Heard snippets of the first album at random places and it didn't grab me. I can remember the chorus of the "Can't Stop Me Now" song but I haven't heard anything else from the follow-up. Will dig deeper eventually. Not sure why people hate the Libertines because I haven't really dug through Libertines threads. Probably the mix of repulsive hype and an indifference to a relatively anonymous sound.

REM, Monster tour. Starlake Ampitheatre outside Pittsburgh. 15, went with my dad. By sheer coincidence I wound up on the lawn right by one of my better friends in school and his dad. He was a crazed Stipe fan and I was a crazed Buck fan. After opening act Luscious Jackson (whatever) this humongous storm came and (as Stipe put it in his banter, later) "pissed old-testament rain" down on everybody. It cleared up right before they started. I enjoyed it a lot and really liked all the new songs that they later put on Hi-Fi. Everybody sang along with "Losing My Religion" and screamed "LEONARD BERNSTEIN!" during "End Of The World."
Still have and wear the shirt, though only if I'm wearing something over it.

After winning the award for "the best band that actually plays instruments" (yes, that's an actual award), Good Charlotte performed "I Just Wanna Live" with Lil Jon. He came and and did a little call and response part before the 2nd verse, and then ad libbed through the rest of the song. It was great. Also, I thought you'd like to know that I saw a couple black girls singing "I Just Wanna Live" on my campus last week.

1.5. Because its a loopy portrayal of The End Of Days with Michael York as an seemingly saving the world but secretly set on imperial goals and self-deification. Easily seen as a glimpse into Bono's middle age. Michael Ironside plays his toady sidekick (an aged The Edge?) and Casper Van Diem plays the young p.r. dude who must realize what's really happening before its too late. It's a laugh and a half.
