Collaborative mix-disc. A sorta new concept (This is the ILMiXor thread!)

Step 1 - get a gmail account, and share the password with everyone you want to participate.

Step 2 - (optional) Decide on what order you'll be adding songs to the playlist, and choose a theme.

Step 3 - first in line sends an mp3 of the song to the shared account.

Step 4 - Next in line downloads and listens to that song, sends one of his/her own.

Step 5 - repeat until the length of a CD is achieved, burn all the mp3s to in in a sequence. Or just make it an itunes playlist for all I care.

Some folks I know have been doing this and we've gotten some pretty cool results. I thought maybe this crowd would like the idea, too.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

why not do it as a blog? people can upload their tracks to their own webspace and post links (and if they don't have webspace, someone else can host the file for them).

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:18 (twenty years ago)

gmail was chosen initially because it provided the webspace. But do whatever you want with the idea.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to do this.

adam posting anonymously (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

i'll create the blog.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm happy to be in; my address is the one below.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

dig: http://ilmixor.blogspot.com/

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

Here's a suggestion: Once Jody opens it up w/a song and a writeup, she then writes at the end, in bold, the name of the participant who has next on the mix. If they take more than a week to follow it up, she then has the option of choosing a different person to do so. Each successive person does the same thing. Sequence should be chronological based on who gets in on the blog in which order. Only a suggestion, but maybe a way to keep things rolling in a relatively coherent fashion.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Me too. Address as seen.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for setting this up, Jody. Matos's suggestion is wise.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

Blog looks nice!

mcd (mcd), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

sounds good, matos. i'll whip up an introductory post sometime today.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to participate.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

ok d00dz, check your e-mail if you haven't already.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Another request to play from me (at this e-mail).

Chris Hill (Chris Hill), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 20:02 (twenty years ago)

In my previous experience, it rarely takes as long as a week to get a new post up - often less than a day.

Austin (Austin), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm in ... barry.bruner@gmail.com

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

I want in. Maybe if we get enough people we can sort ourselves into teams. Perhaps make a competition out of it. My email address works.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:41 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to be in as well (the first part of my gmail address is real).

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

so, ah, who's offering to host files?

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Maybe if we get enough people we can sort ourselves into teams.

a lot of people have joined already, but how many of them are actually going to post remains to be seen. i don't wanna get too ambitious with this yet.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

so, ah, who's offering to host files?

i'd be willing to host a few.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

thanks!

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:52 (twenty years ago)

i'd be willing to host as well.

it's tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Once Jody opens it up w/a song and a writeup, she then writes at the end, in bold, the name of the participant who has next on the mix.

on second thought, getting everyone to post in order and in a fairly timely manner is a pain in the butt. let's just do it first come, first serve.

i put my entry up -- i'm recycling my blog post from the other day since i don't think many people read it the first time. i know, i know, starting a mix with a 9-and-a-half-minute song is outrageous, but chutzpah (and kinky sex) makes the world go 'round.

i'll write a sidebar explaining what the project is and linking to here.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

So...the theme is...kinky sex?

This was not a post, it was merely the wind whistling thru the redwoods (nordics, Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

the theme is... chutzpah.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

jody...that song is really fucking weird!

not me (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

I'm kind of disappointed that I know the first song, but it is great. If I'm not mistaken it has a line about handjobs.

I think starting a compilation with a nine and a half minute long song rocks.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:28 (twenty years ago)

o man that track TAKES OFF at the spoken word bit

bulbs (bulbs), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:34 (twenty years ago)

OK, I know what song to do next...

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh man it's pretty hard for me to resist stuff like this, so count me in if that's okay (seeing as i still haven't got my own mp3 blog back on track just yet)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:54 (twenty years ago)

For those of us who don't have hosting space -- to whom should we send our files?

Gmailing our contribution to the group is another, albeit messy option.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

i can host one or two

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

For those of us who don't have hosting space -- to whom should we send our files?

i guess me, tricky, or stevem!

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 February 2005 23:59 (twenty years ago)

If I'm not mistaken it has a line about handjobs.

handjive actually.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:19 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to do this! and to hear this mystery song. email address valid, remove the caps bit.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

haha watch "first come first serve" turn into a clusterfuck

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

Bloody HELL! Start with one of my favourite recordings of ALL TIME, why don't you?

Any MP3 blog which starts with Labelle's "Moonshadow" is my kind of MP3 blog. Please count me in. I can host my own MP3s, but not anybody else's.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

haha watch "first come first serve" turn into a clusterfuck

yeah i kinda agree. i mean maybe you thought of a nice segue/link and oops, someone else nabbbed it.

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i was thinking the same thing.

i have a second song, but it looks like elvis beat me to it.

xpost, ha.

it's tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

we wait with baited breath mr telecom!

bulbs (bulbs), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

invitations sent.

xpost -- i doubt it. but if there's a segue you really want to do and you've decided it before you've uploaded/written about the song, just e-mail me and i'll ensure your place in the queue.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

For those of us who don't have hosting space -- to whom should we send our files?

i guess me, tricky, or stevem!

OK.

To make it easier on you guys (so you don't have to worry too much about getting the files posted quickly), people without hosting space could create a yousendit link and post it here -- that way, at least all the blog contributors can obtain the file right away, and JBR/Tricky/Stevem can post it on their servers whenever they get a chance.

Anyway, we'll see how it goes.

xpost

Perhaps someone could make a brief post on the blog to say "I'm going next" so that everyone else knows that the next spot is taken. Then they can update that post when they finish their blurb and post the mp3.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

post it in the comments.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

people without hosting space could create a yousendit link and post it here

oh this is a good idea: I was just about to ask in typically Luddite fashion "uploading? whuh? how?" but even I know how to use yousendit.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

here's my email if you need yr file hosted: joshhh at googleemail

it's tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:46 (twenty years ago)

the order so far is:

me
elvis t.
tricky

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:51 (twenty years ago)

can I get on the roation too?

btw I think this is potentially a good idea to spin off from. I'm thinking of trying to round a few folks up to do it in a more closed-house fashion, and I think others who do the same could come up w/some good stuff. still def. wanna be down w/this as well obv.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

matos, you'll go after tricky. just leave a comment on his post (whenever he posts) reminding people you're next.

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

ah! OK, comments box is for that. cool! eliminates clusterfuck worries. (should I send you the MP3s for storage?)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

(nevermind last question, I'll email you)

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

thanks Jody :)

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:12 (twenty years ago)

Shit, sorry. Was working on my post while you were coming up with the running order idea. Didn't mean to jump the queue.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 3 February 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

OK so when do I go? I want to be on the ball. Nice pix so far dudes.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

also i'm gonna impose a time limit for this cuz i wanna keep it moving. when it's your turn, you have one day to post your stuff, and if you don't, the next person goes and you get bumped to the back of the line.

(stormy: you betcha)

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

this is going to move super-fast! (a good thing I think.)

Uh, possibly stoopid question coming up: if I want to post a song which I own on CD but not mp3, is there a way of turning it into an mp3? or should I just trawl the usual places for it?

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

i recommend this:
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

thanks! I'm not entirely sure I understand that page, and I can't d/l anything right now, but I'll have a look at the weekend and see if I can get it to work. if not I will cry for help again.

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

If you have itunes, you can also set that to import songs as mp4 rather than m4a. Go under Preferences and Burning.

Austin (Austin), Thursday, 3 February 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

I'll take whatever spot is next.

ok. including you we're up to 35 people. i'm gonna close the list pretty soon.

(btw if you've gotten an invite from me, be sure to click the link that makes you a "member" of the group blog. otherwise you won't be able to post.)

Wow. In the last hour I've learnt how to access the free web space my ISP gives me, unused for the past 5 years, and how to FTP my mp3s onto it. Anything that encourages this level of geekery must be good.

i'm not ready to think about that yet. :-)

Nimrod Kovacs (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 3 February 2005 23:12 (twenty years ago)

how about "spunk". as a companion to "chutzpah"

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

my hunch is plenty of pix will be off-topic to some degree or other, and that this will be essentially fine.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

i am intrigued to see how far it meanders. so far the three tracks make a nice little package. who's gonna be the first to post, i dunno, a country song full of chutzpah.

bulbs (bulbs), Friday, 4 February 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

not to mention the Hebrew/Yiddish meaning of "chutzpah" (one of them, anyhow)

there's something wrong w/the MP3, it stops after about 15 seconds. you should repost it.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Friday, 4 February 2005 13:31 (twenty years ago)

grrrrrrr i hate blogger's commenting system! turns out there's a css hack that lets you hide the annoying "this post has been deleted" message, but then you can't hide the name/time stamps without hiding ALL the comments on the post.

i might move the comments over to yaccs (which is easier to manage).

the polo grounds (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 February 2005 14:19 (twenty years ago)

i just wanted to delete some of my "next in queue" comments to make things less confusing for people.

the polo grounds (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 4 February 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

I don't think YACCS accepts new accounts any more. Haloscan may be what you want.

Actually, I was more thinkin' of having a permanent user list on the main page so you wouldn't have to post an updated list in the comments section of each post. Not that I'm complaining about the current system.

you can gmail it to me but i can't upload it until tomorrow morning.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

seems to me like at the end of disc one we just begin disc two but not in a "themed" way, just one ends and the other begins. seems logical enough.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 04:41 (twenty years ago)

Fellow ILMiXor posters - I posted a draft of my contribution, just so I wouldn't forget what I wanted to post.

How do you know what song to play before you hear the choices of the people ahead of you? You're skipping Step 4!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:30 (twenty years ago)

I agree - it's not just about choosing a good song, but also choosing a good song to go after the previous song. Just like any mix.

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:34 (twenty years ago)

Given the way things are going, I am taking a pre-emptive stance. Depending on what happens, of course, shit could change, but I think my selection might still fit in regardless of what happens between then & me. I reserve the right to change my mind & stuff - it's not final, but I'm forecasting a bit given on how things seem to be progressing. Just like any mix.

Oh, yeah - Jody, if you want, I can swap w/ adam nice & simple-like.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:43 (twenty years ago)

I am totally down with doing another round myself, this is lots of fun

Allyzay Dallas Multi-Pass (allyzay), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 05:52 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm...maybe citing the example of an Exquisite Corpse would better explain why I think as I do?

Obviously, it's not that big a deal, but a mix like this does have it's own characteristics that make it a little different from any mix, so I should probably take that "just like any mix" thing back.

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:01 (twenty years ago)

okay, done and done!
somehow, i feel you've all probably heard the song before. but there ain't nothing i can do about it now!

as a suggestion for a future mix, if someone really wanted to run a tight ship he/she could get the list of people in order and only send a person the song that comes right before their entry on the mix - you could only base what song you'd send in on the one that was sent to you. everything would get posted once the mix is finished. that, i think, would make it really interesting, if a little more chaotic.

lemin (lemin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

I figure there will be many spinoffs of this--smaller groups of people doing it in tighter rotation. I'm planning one of these myself, a little bit, if I can get the people and the bandwidth et al going. Ideally I could be part of a few groups like this. the more the merrier, for me anyway.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 07:24 (twenty years ago)

aaaaand i posted david's.

Thanks!

Matos -

In my original experience with this, a shared gmail address provides enough bandwidth for about 5 CDs worth of mp3s.

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

I can also help with hosting mp3s if necessary.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was going to put a Laurie Anderson song on! :\

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

My two cents is that we should end Disc 1: Chutzpah at 80min and start Disc 2: (whatever) at that point. That way it's finite and the steez of the operation changes now and then. I think having it just go on and on waters down the end result a bit. I am so rockist.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

Just a quick question that was probably already answered -- all these songs are going to stay up as long as the blog is up, yeah? Or is there a limit on time?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

My track will stay up 4evah (or as long as needed), & if web-hosting services are necessary, let me know, as I've plenty of room on my popshizz dote whoarguh domain.

Or, as Teeny said so succinctly: "I can also help with hosting mp3s if necessary."

after kephm we'll start round 2.

where are we now, minutes-wise?

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

After Laurie Anderson, it was at 59:30 or so -- I haven't d/l'd David's selection yet.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

My machine says it is now 62:30

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

Damn, my turn is coming up fast here.

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it's a big deal to keep the concept or whatever going; at this point it really is sort of in the hands of the people making the disc/s. as for storage, that's up to whomever is d/l'ing and burning the things, not the people contributing, really.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Next time, along with picking a new theme, we should randomize the order.

nah, the order's fine.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

I defer to childhood secrets in these matters.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

We ARE all great, every one of us.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

i'm not really interested in the CD80 part of this. how many people will put these onto CDs? or is one person going to do it and send it out to everyone (this seems awfully cumbersome - see ILX CD which seems to take years to happen - unless you don't have a burner)? for me it's just another neat way to obtain great tracks from reliable sources.

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

to each their own. I'm interested in it as a mix. but no one else has to be. that's what's nice about it.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm interested in it as a mix freed from the boundaries of time. A "mega-mix", if you will.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:55 (twenty years ago)

ok - ill check back - please keep me posted!

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

for me it's just another neat way to obtain great tracks from reliable sources.

I guess I'm interested in the CDR80 as a way to establish limitations & parameters -- so the thing is built like an old school mixtape with a beginning middle and end and not just a collection of tracks. Whether you listen to it that way or in any order is up to you. The cool part about this blog is taking from what the folks behind you have done and adding yr own flavor to the whole-- the progression. I do think there should be some consistency & flow (like on a mix) btwn the tracks rather than just a collection of mp3s.

mcd (mcd), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

i also like the idea of each mix having a first song and a last song.
suppose it doesn't necessarily have to be 80 minutes though....

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:23 (twenty years ago)

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

True. And really any way we do it is fine by me. I just think it's a cool thing.

Steve SOME people have shit computers which can't hold more than like 50 mp3s and are therefore locked in a vicious and eternal cycle of download-and-burn-and-immediately-delete-so-computer-doesn't-explode! CD80 part needs to be kept.

ostensibly you can still burn 80 minutes' worth of songs to a CD, delete those, and put the rest on another CD (or two).

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

but i do like the CD80 idea because it makes it all easier to digest.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

that's true. but then I have to work out for myself when the 80-min mark is which involves... addition, and stuff.

I like the idea of it being a common CD, everyone having the same track listing &c. a communal experience!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 19:44 (twenty years ago)

i agree with stockholm cindy's secret childhood about the easier-to-digest factor. communal experience is nice, too.

40 songs = one 4x10 song box of chutzpah. the first disc would end with laurie anderson. (4x10 assumes the 10 songs fit in 80 minutes of course)

i guess it all depends on how to listen to and store your music though.

(btw, your pazz n jop comments were really great, scsc)

it's tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

gah, the 3rd sentence should read: i guess it all depends on how you listen to and store your music though.

it's tricky (disco stu), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

I'm definitely going to be burning mine to CD - and yeah, I like the thought of a whole bunch of people having copies of the same physical object. The track sequencing is playing a large part in making this so enjoyable and interesting (Metal Urbain -> Shuggie Otis: oooh), and having to choose closing/opening tracks would add to this, giving the whole thing more shape and structure.

I suggest keeping a timing count in the comments. Not difficult if you load the MP3s into Winamp. The first 12 tracks add up to just over 62 minutes, so there are just over 17 minutes left. Just a thought. (I'm happy to do it, but I've only got Winamp on one of the three machines I use regularly, so...)

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:24 (twenty years ago)

Seconded. We need cover art!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 23:32 (twenty years ago)

sorry to seem so curt above regarding the 'who needs the CD part' thing. it's just a personal preference of course and i know not everyone is technoratified enough to store tens of thousands of mp3s (esp. The Lex, haha). the problem for me is as with the awesome Rough Guides project (praise Matos to this day), CD80s are the perfect length in digestion terms but i've come to find CDs so inconvenient or just too limiting. i suppose i was curious as to who else wasn't interested/planning on burning the discs and the whole artwork thing etc. without all that i know it's just a collab. blog that could be done by any bunch of people any time but it's no big deal. i still like the thoughtful CD package in theory, just not in practice (tho packaged brim-full CD700s i'd definitely say yes to). anyway, onwards.

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 February 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

Speaking of which: there's a track I'm eyeing, but it's 5:19, which means that it would put Disc 1 at 80:20. Should I pick something shorter to stay within the mix, or what? (I sort of don't want to, since it's a nice segue, I think.)

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

does the track have a fade-out ending? can you edit it to fade down early?

otherwise, you might have to pick a shorter track.

I am kinda terrified by the prospect of having to start the next one! I mean, how would I top Moonshadow? Hopefully jay will pick something long or something.

you're not starting it. you're second! pressure's off. :-)

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:21 (twenty years ago)

well, hmmm--does the disc have to be as close to 80 minutes as we can make it? doesn't seem like it should be, necessarily.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:29 (twenty years ago)

if you remove all the pauses between tracks (so it reads something like "pause: 0 seconds"), the running time is 75:21:43. everyone's cd-burning software should be able to do this.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

it certainly doesn't, but jaymc has a particular song he wants to use.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:31 (twenty years ago)

that's my point, though--if he wants to go over the time, it just starts disc two of this. doesn't seem like a big deal.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:33 (twenty years ago)

that sorta throws off the theme of disc 2 though ("all tracks between 3 and 4 minutes").

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 02:34 (twenty years ago)

I went the fade-out edit route. Which actually worked pretty well in this case. It's up now.
