many parents buy the kelly clarkson album for their daughters. none of them return it. the lindsey lohan album resides directly beneath the pay counter (lest you think it's favortism, it's because we have so many copies there's nowhere else to put them) and is often picked up and ridiculed by the aforementioned daughters. britney spears is totally ignored, except for the college kid who lost a bet and had to be photographed buying her greatest hits CD. ashlee outsells jessica, despite the lipsync travesty.

My girlfriend and several of her friends are huge Kelly Clarkson fans. They buy her CDs and DVDs and have been (as a group) to see her in concert. For some reason their love of Kelly does not extend to any other American Idols. They particularly hate Clay and Rueben.

These people are all in their late 20s and are fully aware of the array of music out there, they'd just rather listen to kitchy / poppy stuff.

Well, it was really more of a rhetorical question, David, but I can't say I know anyone who'd be tempted to spend money on Kelly Clarkson-affililated products. Although, who knows? Maybe I have. It's generally not something someone confesses to, I'd imagine. Sort've in the same way someone wouldn't be inclined to confess to the fact that they sustain themselves on a diet consisting solely of Twinkies and Spam. But hey, to each their own, I suppose.

The kind of people most likely to buy American Idol records are people who aren't that invested in buying records, but like watching tv and are willing to throw down a bit of cash at Walmart/Sam's Club/etc because they like singer and want to complete the narrative of the show by actually helping to make them a star.

This guy at my work has her CD. I asked him for a CD to test out an amplifier circuit, and he pointed me to his CD wallet. Inside were Kelly Clarkson, Faith Hill, and a BUNCH of Train CDs. I chose "Drops of Jupiter" (whatever the fuck that means!). He also bought the Clay Aiken CD.

It's sad, because I actually thought Fantasia from last season had the potential to put out something good; but I listened to her record, and it was horrible. Either it's that Simon Fuller's company is insanely cheap about producers, or maybe it's that they really don't want to let anyone get too famous, so that people focus on the next season of American Idol. Or maybe both.

All I know is the chorus melody just lays me out and has its way w/ me, and I don't mind one bit. (Weirdo connection: it reminds me of the main melody from Shanice's "I Love Your Smile"! The doo-doo-doo part.) Also, she sings like what I imagine folks tolerant of Macy Gray's voice hear.

Maybe there's a single version of it out there that you're hearing. I DO like the gated, notched piano playing on the song, however.

It's ok. Better beat than "Truth Is." Maybe I just expected WAY too much. It's not like I listen to a lot of R&B, so I'm not really the audience for it. I'm trying to think of a modern album that would be comparable (Macy Gray is the first thing that jumps to mind, due to the voice similarities), and they all have tons of schlock and filler on them, so maybe Fantasia's record is just par for the course.

I was really into the performance of "Since U Been Gone" - it seemed very dynamic and exciting, just as good as the performances by U2 and Scissor Sisters this season.

That Chub Hotty skit was intensely awful, but she looked really cute dressed like that!

About half of the skits in this episode were above average, mainly because Jason Bateman is fucking awesome. The ones that were bad were really really really bad.

"Since U Been Gone" live on SNL, as with when she performed it on MTV, suffers a little from the lack of the harmonies the studio version has that drive the chorus. I dunno if backup singers would solve that problem, though.

I dunno why people act shocked about this song, though, "Miss Independent" was really good too.

I don't think the song sounds that much like the YYYs, it's just that one part sounds really similar to the really good part in "Maps." I think that it probably intentional too.

In fairness to the Scissor Sisters, the songs performed on SNL are not the ones I would've had them do if it were up to me. Seek out "Laura," that's an amazing pop song.

Kelly looks thinner, but definitely not unhealthy. She's still got some meat on her, though her ass is noticeably (sadly, I'd say) smaller now.

Overall, it's fairly good. My guess is "Behind These Hazel Eyes" for the next single. "You Found Me" is also a standout, but be prepared to dislike it if you don't like Avril Lavigne because that song is more Avril than Avril. And the live version of "Beautiful Disaster" is also excellent (although that's an older song, from her last album, isn't it?).

I'm intrigued by how much everyone liked the performance. Maybe I just need to get more sleep but at the time I thought like everything about "Since U Been Gone" sounded way off key virtually to the point of making it microtonal music, which actually did make it interesting. I never liked the song before but it was almost like some avant indie band doing a pop song parody. Was it just me or did the guitars sound noisier than usual too? In terms of conventional standards of good singing though, the homeless blind girl sketch certainly won.

Pretty much. You'd be surprised how many people fail to see any humor, though.

That is a total YeahYeahYeahs guitar swipe, isn't it.

Incidentally, I do have to say that "Since You've Been Gone" is far superior to "Miss Independent". Her handlers/puppeteers do a better job at the entirely prefabricated Avril-styled rocker chick aesthetic than they do at the head-wobblin', "oh no you dii-n't!" homegirl diva aesthetic (hello, P!nk!). I first started this thread based on the assault on MTV and Vh1 of "Since You've Been Gone" (which is seemingly every other video on both channels). They're really pushing it.

Rufus is 2 and at first he liked it, but his new thing is too say, "No, I don't like that song" when almost ANYTHING is playing these days. Especially when I sing them. Which is understandable. (He'll also say: "Is this song over yet?" a lot. But the poor kid is inundated with music, so it makes sense. Plus, he's just all about "no" these days.)

I do kind conceptually like using “Maps” as the bridge, since it reads like a moment of hesitation—you know, Kelly suddenly changing her mind and going “wait,” wait, maybe you should come back—but seriously, his chorus voice is almost bordering on that semi-ironic falsetto guys use for offhand imitations of pop songs.

Well dude, it just sounds like he whipped it off during a radio session or during some studio downtime or whatever, and in that context it’s, you know, cool, nice energetic performance and kind of fun. It’s just as a thing for people to be scouring the internet for that it’s kind of silly: anyone who knows a few musicians probably knows someone personally who could do almost as good of a job at this. (“Almost” because I guess Leo really does have a knack for playing fast and energetic without it seeming to require any effort, which is a rarish skill. When it comes to that, I don’t know if anyone can beat one of the Elvis Costello demos that’s packaged on This Year’s Model now—he jets right off through this song sounding ridiculously on-point and then kinda stops and goes “oops, let me start over” and then just pops right along through it again…)

Actually any busker who mixes "Since U Been Gone" and "Maps" is being far too cute for my tastes. Unless they can actually get into the lyric (Ted's take feels pretty superficial to me).

I've listened to Chisel and his pre-Heart Of Oak stuff but none of it (aside from a few tracks on Tyranny) have really sunk in. I think his current rhythm section is the shit (and his songwriting has tightened too).

He put out a solo acoustic EP. It was ass. I reserve the right to fret about further activities of this nature.

also, Tyranny > everything else he's done, although it has a less solid rhythm section (his band sounds tight and rehearsed on the new record, sometimes awful on Hearts, and hit or miss live)

and yeah i apologize for the crucifixion talk, clearly shouldn't have been directed at you, although some people have called for his head for those minor indulgences, which are nothing compared to that "Tej Leo" record.

Though Fever To Tell is one of my favorite albums in recent years, I kinda wish "Since U Been Gone" would get the YYYs to feel some need to compete, like an absurd version of the '60s beatles-stones-beach boys rivalry - jacking studio-pop techniques the way Max Martin jacked theirs. Doubt it will.
