At some point (not yet) I'll put out a call for new signups -- we're going to start the rotation over again, but I might ask that everyone (including those who've already participated) sign up for their second spot, just so we can get a sense of who's still interested in continuing on with this.

To recap, if you haven't been following along: We're doing a series of collaborative mix CDs in the form of an mp3 blog called ILMiXor. A group of ILM-ers assembled in a queue, and each of us took a turn posting an mp3 relating to the chosen theme (using our own hosting space or borrowing someone else's) and writing a blurb about the track. When we reached 80 minutes, we moved to begin Disc 2, starting with the next person in line (Sasha).

The theme for Disc 2 is "Pop Top 40 From Another World." As Austin said on the first thread, "All tracks between 3 and 4 minutes, no swearing, a good beat you can dance to - otherwise go nuts." Self-explanatory.

OK kids, make one mix.

(Oh, and if this thread becomes too much to keep up with, check the recent comments on the blog for an updated queue.)

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:54 (twenty years ago)

Most of the tracks will have to have to be closer to three minutes if we're going to fit it into 80!

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

some of the people will have to spill over into disc 3.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

anyone else having trouble downloading the lyrics born track?

mohair (jon kapper), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what's causing that. In any case, you can get it at the backup storage - ilmixor at gmail dot com. login with the password ilovemusic.

Austin (Austin), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

ooooooh. i like the theme to this one. i hope my spot pops up before we move on to disc 3...

john'n'chicago, Friday, 11 February 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

I shoulda been on this one. Nevermind.

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Friday, 11 February 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

This seems a point where I should probably shamefacedly admit that I have messed up a second invite by thinking "hmm I should probably check that" and pressing back and then having the invite somehow fail/count as expired :( Might I have one more chance?

Gravel Puzzleworth (Gregory Henry), Friday, 11 February 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

can we go ahead and move all the tracks into that gmail account?

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 February 2005 18:15 (twenty years ago)

I guess not since at least two tracks have disappeared for me (Romanthony and Grace Jones)

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 February 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

"backup storage!"

TOMBOT, Friday, 11 February 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

Fixed, but still no Romanthony. God dammit.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 11 February 2005 19:12 (twenty years ago)

I can keep updating that on a regular basis from now on if that's cool with people. Not like they give me shit else to do at this job.

sorry about that-
djremote@geeeemaildotcom is the current one.

come on sock it to me, Saturday, 12 February 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

I'm so excited about this because I finally got that program which turns CD tracks into mp3s to work! I also finally got a chance to listen to the Chutzpah disc - it's so good, I love everyone who contributed to it!

What are people without hosting space doing at the moment? Putting temporary yousendit links up or sending the mp3 to other people (if so who) in advance?

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

I think most people are currently using borrowed webspace. But there's no reason usendit couldn't work if regularly updated, and also the shared ilmixor gmail acount.

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

djremote@geeeemaildotcom is the current one.

sent!

But there's no reason usendit couldn't work if regularly updated, and also the shared ilmixor gmail acount.

you can just post something here saying you're putting the track on yousendit/the gmail account, and then one of us can upload and host the file for you.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

regarding how long we're going to keep the mp3s up -- i think we should keep each disc up for a certain length of time (tbd) and announce a deadline for people to grab whatever tracks they need before we take them down.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:39 (twenty years ago)

I think most people are currently using borrowed webspace.

how does this work?

sending it to the gmail account seems like the best bet so far.

The Lex (The Lex), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

how about a month from the date we finish each disc (we finished disc 1 on feb 11, so we pull the mp3s on march 11, and give people a week's notice)?

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

OK by me (I burned disc 1 last night.)

Austin (Austin), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:43 (twenty years ago)

I think most people are currently using borrowed webspace.

a lot of us have hosting space -- people without have been asking people with to host their files, and gmailing/yousendit-ing the files to them. anyway, what i just said above works too:

you can just post something here saying you're putting the track on yousendit/the gmail account, and then one of us can upload and host the file for you.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 12 February 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

once again, the shared gmail account is ilmixor@gmail.com, pword: ilovemusic.

i haven't mucked with blogger in a long time - but is it possible to assign categories to the posts? thus all the disc 1 posts are filed under chutzpah and if you had archives by category then each disc could be called up with one link. or not.

gspm (gspm), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:04 (twenty years ago)

it's all chronologically ordered anyway... as it is it's not too hard to go to the first/second week of archives for disc 1 (and there's a tracklist on the sidebar).

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:37 (twenty years ago)

i mean, if i wanted to host this blog on my own site i guess i could install movable type, but... nah.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:38 (twenty years ago)

Is that list closed or not? If not, I'd like to send a file.

can you read? (sorry, i'm in a bad mood.)

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 February 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

the reason i'm doing it this way is that we still have a lot of people queued to go and i don't wanna get ahead of myself -- i'd like to at least finish disc 2 before adding more people (we'll probably be into disc 3 by the time everyone's gone).

Fine then (me too, no apologies).

Deerninja B4rim4, Plus-Tech Whizz Kid (Barima), Sunday, 13 February 2005 22:22 (twenty years ago)

i do see the way it is setup nw is functional (tracklist on sidebar, archival links and whatnot) but there is nothing there that strictly encloses mix 1 onto one page and mix 2 onto another page. i ain't running it, but I raised the idea to improve long-term usability.

i like the ILMixor idea. i hope it continues for a few mixes. given that I am following along religiously i don't even think i would have any personal need to have all the postings for one mix assembled on one page. just being pedantic.

gspm (gspm), Sunday, 13 February 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

You know what this is missing? Casey Kasem. If somebody can do a killer imitation and read the notes as an intro to each track, that would add SO MUCH!

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

running time on disc 2 so far is 19:57.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

for all the "I Want In" folks - Jody closed the list like two days after it started. There is enough interest for that queue to take weeks to go through (i'm not in it, just an interested follower).

So before anybody asks (yet again) and has Jody (yet again) say that the list is "closed" to new interested members for the time being.... if you really are interested let me draw more attention to this---

"Allow me to suggest that everyone who's irked at not getting in on this round start their own to run parallel with this. It's pretty easy to do."
-- Austin, February 15th, 2005 10:20 PM.

go to blogspot, start a blog. start a thread announcing a second ILMixor blog. get the "interested but shut out" parties to send a message to you, and then you send them the password to the new website. easy. nobody OWNS the idea of doing this so a second mix can be started alongside this one. somebody can surely take this initiative and stem the tide of "me too"/No that continues to burble through these two threads.

not to sound like a jerk.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

you're not going to be shut out of this one -- i just want to get through some more of disc 2 before opening the list again. we just started disc 2 and already we're 20 minutes in, so if everything keeps running smoothly the wait won't be that long.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

haha sorry. it's what i get for reading ilm sporadically. good show, everyone.

f--gg (gcannon), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

it's an issue of manageability; also i'll want EVERYONE who's interested (including the people from round 1) to sign up again, just so i know everyone's still on the same page with this. i'll give priority in the queue to people who haven't gone yet.

if you have internet access in new york, you can post the blurb and one of us can hunt down an mp3 for you.

stockholm cindy's secret childhood (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 18:57 (twenty years ago)

i should start by saying that i have liked almost all of these songs so far, but i wonder if who ever came up with the theme for this disc is satisfied with the direction that people are taking with it? most of these songs qualify as pop songs in our world. i can't say for sure what i was expecting, but i can say that the first songs that popped into my head were "cool in the pool" by holger czukay and the entire plugs plus album by dat politics... not that these suggestions are any more correct... but they're just what i thought of.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

My satisfaction isn't at issue, but I'd rather be surprised than satisfied in a case like this anyhow. What's more, the theme isn't just 'pop from another world' it's 'pop top 40 from another world.' I was hoping to be exposed to songs that shoulda been hits but weren't. I think we're doing fine as far as that goes.

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

I can barely contain my FURY that some tracks are going over 4 minutes, though. This ain't no extended disco 17 inch remix shit right here!

(yeah, I know that some top 40 hits get to be as long as 5 minutes. Anyway, what am I gonna do, come over to your house and beat you up, or at least steal all the food from your fridge? Hell no.)

Austin (Austin), Tuesday, 15 February 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Can I steal your food instead?

i can't help thinking i should correct my entry so that 'The Theme' is in double quotemarks...

Alienus Quam Reproba (blueski), Wednesday, 16 February 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Damn - I'm up next. Sorry - that's kind of crept up on me. And I'm really sorry, but I didn't confirm my blogger invite in time. Could you send another? If Dean wants to skip ahead of me then that's fine. I won't be able to do this for 24 hours now.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:47 (twenty years ago)

dean, you around?

stockholm cindy's secret world with martin bashir (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:48 (twenty years ago)

I am around, but I'm at work. I might be able to go tonight, if not ... definitely tomorrow.

Who did release magic family out from the base of $499 (deangulberry), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:54 (twenty years ago)

So sorry to be so useless. If its any consolation, I have a track (flow willing) and webspace all ready for when I get another blogger invite, though I guess setting up my account will take a bit of time, as will writing my entry, and it's almost 2am and I have to work tomorrow.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

dude, don't worry about it. invite sent btw.

stockholm cindy's secret world with martin bashir (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:56 (twenty years ago)

(I'm out after work tomorrow night but might well be able to squeeze it in before I go out. If not, it'll be 24hrs from now, as I say)

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:57 (twenty years ago)

Thanks jody. Invite not received yet but it's probably just gmail being crap. 'Night.

hello all. just giving the thread a friendly good morning bump back to the top of new answers.

stockholm cindy's secret world with martin bashir (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Good morning! If we need a host for mp3s, can we just e-mail it to you? (I presume you have already answered this and will take me to task for not reading up. ;-))

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 17 February 2005 13:29 (twenty years ago)

ned, you know i'd never take you to task for anything! and several people are willing to host mp3s -- if i'm not around, your best bet is to post it to the shared gmail account (or yousendit) with a note here saying you've got an orphan mp3 looking for a home.

Exactly at what time on Monday? Because us west coast people might be still asleep before Round 3 fills up, you see... given how quick the signups have been.

stockholm cindy's secret world with martin bashir (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 18 February 2005 04:01 (twenty years ago)

The explanation is that I was horrendously drunk when I got in last night and am kind of amazed my post above is as coherent as it is. I am scared to look at the blogger draft I wrote, but will face up to it this evening, when I am not going out under any circumstances. Apologies.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 21 February 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm marked for Friday, right? Because I've picked my track and am thusly geeked. I'm just wondering if it'd work if I wound up with the last song, since it's not much of a "closer" track.

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

(And... well, I paid more attention to the "from another world" part than the "you can dance to" part, though the beat is in fact hep and swingin')

Stupornaut (natepatrin), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

OK, I'm marked for Friday, right? Because I've picked my track and am thusly geeked.

er, wait ... how could you have done that if you don't yet know the tracks that will immediately precede you?

I mean, I'm sorry, forgive me if i'm being a pedant or a jerk, but I thought the whole point of this was to construct a "mix cd". In other words, something that has some flow from track-to-track. I mean, I thought one of the most exciting things about the project *was* the fact that you are kind of put on the spot -- here is the track leading into yours, 24 hours, tag-you're-it, go!! That's kind of the fun part, no? Both in terms of fun for the selector and, presumably, fun for everyone else who ideally is downloading these things to burn to an 80 minute disc once the mix is completed.

But maybe I'm wrong.

All I know is I had a shortlist of tracks waiting in the wings, assuming I was gonna follow dave. But they were all kind of ridiculous balls-out rocking things, thinking that perhaps they would be good follow-ons for whatever dave chose. Then, when he bailed and I had to follow Ned's track, that was cool, whatever, I went back and tried to pick something that I thought might nicely follow on to Ned's selection. And I didn't mind having to do that. Because, again, that is part of the fun. The way I look at it. But maybe I'm just crazy.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 06:31 (twenty years ago)

No, you're not crazy, that's the way it's supposed to work (this came up on the "Disc 1" thread also).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 06:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah that's the general idea, but it doesn't have to be followed to the letter. sometimes a mix benefits from an abrupt change in direction.

(did anyone get in touch w/ bnw? should we move on to noodle vague?)

christo and jeanne-claude (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 13:33 (twenty years ago)

christo and jeanne-claude (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

Normally I'd agree with Stormy, but given the theme of this particular mix is a hypothetical top 40 countdown, I think it's not too strange to have a track picked out ahead of time. The other question is, of course, what if someone ahead of you in the queue has the same song in mind?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 22 February 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

i kinda like the idea of a slash fiction theme, like every post is slash fiction but the song in question has to feature PROMINENTLY, like how in the end of wes anderson movies he has some fucker walk in slow motion to some song? like that - only slash fiction. IN FACT slash slash fiction ie. slash fiction about slash (Dig?).

we don't have to make this a full 80 minutes long. if no one can go we can call that the end of disc 2 -- but i'll make a final plea for bnw/tombot/teeny/kephm/john'n'chicago (any or all or some of those ppl) to post tonight.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:39 (twenty years ago)

i know we're all busy and have real-life stuff to contend with (myself included), so i don't mean to act like this is the most important thing ever, but this is a pretty simple exercise -- just post a song and write a paragraph or two. it doesn't have to be a ten-page term paper or anything.

I think it's better to start a new theme with the new list. The timing was too perfect, with Disc 2 ending as we reached the end of our list. If the rest of the list can post, then great, otherwise it'll be a shorter CD.

xpost

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 24 February 2005 23:52 (twenty years ago)

bitte, mein liebchen!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

The Ark track is truly something else. Who needs the Scissor Sisters?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

i know! it's the best billy joel song the new radicals never covered!

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 1 March 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

I posted kephm's track and blurb for him. I changed my display name so that it would be posted as "kephm", but it seems as though when I change my settings back to my own name and the blog gets republished then the signature reverts back to my name. Is there any way around this?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

nope, unless kephm gives you his login info and you repost it under his account.

jbr (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...
Where are these mix CDs now? *cough*

If, for some reason, I don't keep up with this thread feel free to e-mail me any ideas.
