Inner Dialogue! Are they or aren't they the great lost Sagittarius/Free Design style outfit?

Unknown -- Gareth brought it to our attention earlier in chat and we did some investigating -- but this cover at least screams 'JBR/Rosemary music,' if you'll allow me to say so:

The cover's like Mitch (of Mitch and Mickey) meets proto-Heart. Uh, sorta.

the blonde looks like jennifer jason leigh.

not going to check out that remix record before I own every last original album... I'm really losing it over that group right now

the web is shockingly deficient in Free Design lyric pages, and they're a band that desperately needs them.

(Jon L), Sunday, 27 February 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

I found the lyrics to "Eleanor Rigby"

I'm meeting my friend Kristian for dinner right now and he's made me a compilation CD which, coincidentally, features two songs by this very band! ILX is abuzz with Inner Dialogue!!!

Guitarthur and the Ecstasy Defecators (Arthur), Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:10 (twenty years ago)

!!!! We are on the hipster trend! :-) (Hey Arthur, invite Kristian to next week's shindig if you'd like.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:36 (twenty years ago)

Listening to the stream of this linked above. Very nice! Has anyone heard their other album?

dlp9001, Sunday, 27 February 2005 02:38 (twenty years ago)

This is wonderfully crazy. (Am listening now too.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 03:25 (twenty years ago)

Cripes, I thought the lyric quotes above were jokes! I was so wrong!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 27 February 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

Hey, just found it on Slsk. Whooo!

dlp9001, Sunday, 27 February 2005 03:51 (twenty years ago)

i've got the second (?) inner dialogue album ("friend") - it's a little more straightforward sunshine pop-rock than the first, but it has a fucking insanely catchy cover of "cry baby cry" that went through my head for 6 months straight. we just bought the first album for the cover and it was so much better than expected.

i have no idea what that "women in white" thing has to do with anything, but that looks amazing too.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Sunday, 27 February 2005 05:49 (twenty years ago)

both of the albums are very lovely.

reo, Sunday, 27 February 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

and wow, that "women in white" thing does indeed look awesome.
it now gets added to the wanted list.

for ned, because jaxon wanted it this way:

two weeks pass...
ok, i think this album is now one of my favourite albums ever. i just like it more and more each time. though, i dont really like the 2nd lp that much, the singing is a bit too gutsy/soulful on the 2nd lp, takes it too far from sunshinepop california dayglo suburban cult music that is the epicentre.

so, what about the anita kerr singers, i should track that down too?

charltonlido (gareth), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

ok, i think this album is now one of my favourite albums ever. i just like it more and more each time

:-) Pretty please if I may, a CDR burn of the vinyl would be a treat.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 20 March 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

Hey Gareth, have you heard Jim and Jean? It's sort of in this vein. Their first album was a conventional folk duo-type thing, but then they got freakier and post-Mamas and Papas with the second album, People World. It's more Topanga Canyon meets Suburban California, but you might like it. I have three songs up on Direct Connect. in the Softness folder.

Arthur (Arthur), Sunday, 20 March 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

Haven't ehard this yet, but my favorite thing is that it's on Ranwood:
http://www.bsnpubs.com/dot/ranwood.html

"Ranwood Records was founded in 1968 by Randy Wood (hence the label name), erstwhile founder and President of Dot Records, along with Lawrence Welk. It is still in operation today, issuing CDs. It was at the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, an extension of the Lawrence Welk Show. Although there have been artists on Ranwood that were not associated with the Show, these albums keep within the general boundaries of the Welk Show's wholesome family entertainment fare, even if a bit old-fashioned."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Sunday, 20 March 2005 11:15 (twenty years ago)

It's truly grand, this record.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Hey, I trust you and Gareth. I don't have the time this week, so, I'm asking for Saturday when I'm free. Nothing by the band has cropped up on Pee-to-pee, though I've just peeped the mp3 G put on the psych/weird pop/60s thread and love it.

Negativa, True Believer (Sheryl Crow in a Britney costume) (Barima), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

gareth has it on p2p, barima. Or if you are atill awake in 5 hours (!), I will get on slsk and you can get it from me.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe we can swap and I can listen to these freefrom five and shortwave set things you are always banging on about.

Semaphore Burns (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 22 June 2005 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Adam, thanks for offering, but I'm a Mac man who can't get on da sk. And even if I could, the comp is still in me mam's bedroom, so I very, very, very rarely get to use it late.

Heh heh, I do go on sometimes. I linked The Shortwave Set on the favourite weird pop/psych thread that's now ongoing - there are 3 mp3s at the Summer's Last Sound Blog right now. I only like about 4 Freeform Five tracks, but I'm happy to gMail those to you, hopefully over the weekend.

I listened. I don't doubt you, but it's hard to credit that it's the same Inner Dialogue. So twas better to say nothing (I thought).

Jeff W (zebedee), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 17:31 (nineteen years ago)

it's the same one. if you think that's off, you should hear their cover of "raindrops keep falling on my head." dear god.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

That track is great. Thanks, gene. I'll bet Paul McCartney would like to hear that. He always liked that song. I always thought he'd get a kick out of the Wings covers on the We All Together records, too.

Do you guys like the band The Split Level? They had an LP on Dot which is quite similar to these groups--overall less eccentric than inner dialogue, less lush but more propulsive overall than The Free Design.

Instrument credits include electric sitar and "the subtle no string guitar." They songs are really catchy, reasonably psychedelic and still certainly left of center--a song about their gear, for example--and the closing track is madrigal-esque and ends with them chanting "SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP, SHUT UP..." lol.

My copy has a "mono" sticker over where it says Stereo.

Hi guys, there's a copy of this Split Level LP on ebay now! I really just want to talk to someone about it. I think side 1 has a few weak moments ("Think of Rain" most ofa ll) but the highs on this LP are just SO GOOD!

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

lets be naive together. what is this record? surely it cannot be as good as inner dialogue?

-- (688), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

No mp3s/streaming no credibility. (And yes, it cannot be as good, I insist.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

It's pretty damn good guys. I'll rip a track for you tonight! The highs are definitely of Inner Dialogue-level bizarro-fabulous.

Hmm, well, you could send them to nedr@sbcglobal.net, for instance...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 October 2006 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

I like the fact that the Split Level, true to their name, don't look like they belong in the same band (which may have been the point?). Two kooky Greenwich Village types paired off with a man and a woman in formalwear - nice Cheap Trick effect, ten years too early.

the 2nd lp i really dont like as much as the first. its earthier and that may appeal to some, but im not taken with it at all

Alex in Denver, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

earthier... in a folk rock kinda way?

ian, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

No not really, more...gutsier vocals, almost R&B ish in places. I guess sounding more like an actual band rather than a studio concoction.

Alex in Denver, Monday, 26 November 2007 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

i said something about the second album above. they cover "raindrops keep falling on my head" and "carolina in my mind," if i recall correctly. it lacks the bizarreness of the first but i really do like their version of "cry baby cry."

two years pass...

i love this record. for whatever reason, there is very little info about this band on the net not even on allmusic. just dug it out there recently, a CDR of the downloaded tracks from this thread. i love the psychotherapy inspired lyrics. the album has got a 'suburban housewife has a spiritual awakening' feel to it.

this is one of my favourite albums i found through ilm. listened to this pretty much everyday back in summer 2006. was also the same summer i discovered tusk by fleetwood mac. was a pretty good summer

is the Inner Dialogue's B.J. Ward (the brunette on that album cover) the same B.J. Ward who did voiceovers for cartoons like Scooby Doo, Woody Woodpecker, and The Flintstones in the '90s and '00s & was a Playboy bunny in the '60s? they sure look alike, but maybe that's just my confirmation bias at work.

B.J. Ward (the Inner Dialogue one)'s solo album Vocal Ease is a pretty good jazz-pop effort in the vein of Joanie Sommers. includes sweet, straightforward covers of Gerry Rafferty's "Keep It to Yourself" and the Beach Boys' "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times" without a whiff of psych weirdness.

From Redtelephone66 (great obscure music blog:)

The music was written by Gene DiNovi (jazz musician who worked with Benny Goodman, Peggy Lee, Tony Bennett & Lena Horne. He also played piano on the Zappa “Freak Out” album. Does mainly solo work now. I believe he is the guy on the album cover.

Lyrics by Tony Velona (“Lollipops & Roses” his best known song).

The singers are:

The blonde is Lynn Dolin (member of the Doodletown Pipers, worked on “The Johhny Mann Show” & performed christian music)

The brunette is B.J. Ward (singer & voice actress in numerous animated shows)

The band is:

DiNovi on keyboards.

Jerry Scheff on bass (toured with Elvis and recorded with everyone from Pat Boone to the Doors).

Bob Lanning on drums (toured with Elvis)

Barry Zweig on guitar (recorded with Peggy Lee, Herb Alpert, Henry Mancini, etc)

All 10 songs permeate the organs (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago)

Was goint to bold the line on B.J., but anyway...

Just discovering this thread this morning, and found all the songs are on youtube. Really liking Inner Dialogue!

thanks for that, Dan. redtelephone66 is an excellent blog. I'm not sure how credible the quoted text is. it's certainly more detailed than anything else I've seen online, but the "singer & voice actress in numerous animated shows" bit could just be conjecture based on a few google searches (like mine). dunno.

heads up it's a bright and sparkling universe
heads down it's a shambles and it's growing worse
eyes right it's a vision of enduring love
eyes left it's a nightmare you're unconscious of

This looks like a band that Carolyn Stoddard from Dark Shadows got involved with when she slipped out of Collinwood for a few days.

That performance happened on the same day that The Shaggs' Philosophy of the World was released. Food for thought.
