ILMiXor Disc 4: Maximalism

This is a big ol' maximalist group, but I'm anticipating some dropouts. Dunno yet if there'll be a Disc 5. If there is one I'd like to limit it to a small group of people who are really really really committed to posting and keeping a tight schedule. We'll see how this one goes.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

or should we move on to mullygrubbr?

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

hullo?

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:21 (twenty years ago)

Maximalism ... I need to do some thinking for this one.

It will not be a song about my last car. I let my sister borrow it and within 3 days it was totalled. I now subscribe to Sebringalism.

zaxxon25 (zaxxon25), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:31 (twenty years ago)

haha i can probably go if need be...but the idea of leading off a disc whose theme i am having troubles with (not intellectual troubles...i'm just not quite sure what i'm gonna say) is a bit daunting. joseph?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

could someone post what i said about maximalism in the Disc 3 thread.. i'm about to pass out from lack of sleep...

as of next week, I can be a standby, jbr, if you want. Or maybe even before then. But I'll be more free next week. Pick a theme. I'm down.

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

right well I'm #12 so i figure i stand a pretty good chance of getting on this one. i like the theme. no one put on "whipping post" though, not that i'm going to, but because it's like thirty minutes long.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:47 (twenty years ago)

never mind what i said upthread, i'm going to have to forfeit my turn to the next fella. fuck hard drives crashing.

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:49 (twenty years ago)

ah, ok...are you all gonna yell at me if i put intro inspection on?

thought so.

i think i have something here instead.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

from donut

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maximalism
Maximalism is a term used in literature, art, and music to apply to post-minimalist movements or works, named in analogy with minimalism. It is not currently in wide use, though it has become more prominent as of 2004.

...

In the more general sense "maximalism" is applied to any doctrine or school of thought that extends its basic principles to the largest possible area. For example a "maximalist" vision of a nation state is one that encompasses all of the areas where the nationality is abundant, a "maximalist" program in science asserts the strongest possible form of its axioms.

Also...

http://www.musicdiscoveries.com/music/categories/meade/meade.html

Glenn Meade composes "maximalist" music: complex and dynamic works for a large synthesizer orchestra. Utilizing more than 40 different synthesizers, samplers, and audio processors he creates beautiful timbres and powerful musical statements. A master of electronic instruments, Glenn achieves sounds that reflect all the breadth and nuance of a skilled virtuoso. They are then fused together in compositions that are symphonic in scope, with strong melodies, chromatic textures, and energetic percussion. Complex and engaging, the compositions vary dramatically -- from those with blistering speed and intensity to those with slow grandeur and haunting melodies.

Haha, now I doubt Glenn Meade is seen as the absolute model for the theme for Disc 4 ;) ... however reinterpret his example into whatever form you feel a song you have in mind is analagous to the description(s) above.. and there you go.

-- donut debonair (do...), March 20th, 2005.

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

This is really cool. Is it too late to sign up for the next disc?

phil jones (interstar), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

(what's especially annoying is that i HAVE a (great!) song but alas no way of getting it up here. grr.)

joseph (joseph), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

aye, ok, just searched it myself (thank you mully).. my key point was this..

although the term "maximalist" was never used to describe these guys.. think MBV's "Loveless", or Cornelius's Fantasma... or anything that tries to be as multi-layered/multi-faceted as possible. Something that tries to occupy every part of your brain at once... or tries to occupy so much of just one part of your brain...
This would be my interpretation. Your interpretation is up to you.

And yes Osymyso's "Intro Introspection" would, imho, be PERFECT to begin Disc 4.. yeah, it's a bit long (10+ minutes?), but what else could begin such a disc? (But that's just me talkin'.. it's up to JBR)

donut debonair (donut), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

i love "intro introspection"! but then like only three other people will get to post tracks.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

you know what, go for it.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:00 (twenty years ago)

This is really cool. Is it too late to sign up for the next disc?

phil, i don't know if there'll be a next disc. we'll see how well we do with this one.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

I am totally sitting in at my small school desk waving hand in the air hoping to get called on now. Waargh.

milton parker (Jon L), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

ok - well if anyone out there has it and can host it send me email at mullygrubber@geemail.com and i'll blurb it. i'm on dial up here and sending a 12 min track isn't going to work.

alternatively: if you don't know it: DOWNLOAD IT NOW!

and i will choose something else. sorry to fudge around !

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:05 (twenty years ago)

i do have it, i just have to trawl through some mp3 discs to find it. i can host it too.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

hooray!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:18 (twenty years ago)

it's uploaded. post the blurb and i'll put the link in.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:50 (twenty years ago)

ok, ready

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:55 (twenty years ago)

done deal!

mcd?

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:00 (twenty years ago)

so im not going to mqake it to disc 4 correct? (just curious cuz i gotta figure out a song)

charleston charge (chaki), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

yeah you will.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

maybe maximalism can be TWO cds!

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:12 (twenty years ago)

I would like to see milton contribute to this particular theme, if at all possible. Only cuz the topic is right up his alley.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

ok! (and phil jones too.)

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

i mean, wasn't trying to be bossy or anything by saying that btw!! obviously, it's your call jbr. I just think milton could probably come up with something pretty amazing given his knowledge of all those wacky composers...

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:33 (twenty years ago)

don't listen to him jbr! milton would ruin this!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:35 (twenty years ago)

oh no

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

(track's ready to go blurb written even, but sadly have no place to host)

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 03:53 (twenty years ago)

so how well are we doing with this one?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:37 (twenty years ago)

waiting for mcd to post...

we're on schedule.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

hey, if we don't hear from mcd by like 6pm EST, would one of the standbys like to step up to the plate?

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

I'm sure one of us will

milton parker (Jon L), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 18:09 (twenty years ago)

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:04 (twenty years ago)

i'll go on standby duty as well, but i'll let other ppl go first.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

I can do it tonight!

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Oh I though I had another entry before me. I'm on it.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

ah.. never mind.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:08 (twenty years ago)

sorry, got caught in meeting! I can go now.

check your g-mail in 60 seconds

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:09 (twenty years ago)

mcd can go after milton, since milton's ready.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

Wait, how the f do I top that track!!? Yeah, sorry, I'll go whenever you see fit, or 20 lashes for missing the deadline or something.

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

top with MORE -- mp3 gmailed with blurb. it actually flows, in a sheer overkill kind of way.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:21 (twenty years ago)

milton -- check your gmail.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:23 (twenty years ago)

weirdly easy! super thank you.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

wait...is it called intro introspection or intro inspection???? the osymyso website says the former. did you change it Jody?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

yep. it is the former.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I've seen it spelled both ways though: http://www.discogs.com/release/39251

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

hurm. "introspection" was what my mp3 said, and that's what donut called it, and that's what everyone i know who's namechecked the track has called it.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

doesn't matter really. thought i was losing my mind!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Thursday, 24 March 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

i'm glad this is still going...i haven't had time to check in lately but this comp is shaping up to be a good one.

basquiat (disco stu), Thursday, 24 March 2005 04:07 (twenty years ago)

Milton, have you heard Tomoe Shinohara's Supermodel album...? there's a pop-montage song on there that seems to traverse almost every genre possible outside metal, within the scope of 4 minutes or so. "Rainbow Lalalu" is the song, i believe.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 07:10 (twenty years ago)

I'm not milton, but I'd be well interested in listening to that record.

BARMS, Thursday, 24 March 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

I'm up now, right?

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 24 March 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

you is!

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

hey donut; could you gmail me that track? I'll reciprocate with something something. I'm sure there's lots of amazing jpop going on right now, I hear it's a fantastic time for singles.

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 24 March 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Sure will, Milton, though that Shinohara track is from 1996.. almost a decade old! doesn't really sound "old" by any means though.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 24 March 2005 19:04 (twenty years ago)

ok we're posted!

mcd (mcd), Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:50 (twenty years ago)

you guys might want to consider Yes's "Sound Chaser." it is over 30 years old but it is the maximalist music five musicians have made I've heard. fwiw

lurkworth, Thursday, 24 March 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

aaaaaaaand mark p is next.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:15 (twenty years ago)

also, mark p's blogger invitation is still pending. (mark, lemme know if i need to send another one.)

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Fletcher!

god my copy was written in a rush. I just noticed the repetitions from cutting and pasting an earlier draft in. what a hack.

milton, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

you can edit it.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:22 (twenty years ago)

thankers! (new to blogger.)

milton, Thursday, 24 March 2005 21:35 (twenty years ago)

bump. what's the scoop, betty boop?

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 March 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

mike t-diva (or standby dudes): you're probably busy this weekend, but if you're around and you have nuthin else to do, maximalize your heart out. no pressure; my weekend's pretty booked too.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 25 March 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

sorry jbr, i didn't get an invite! could you resend it to m@rk.pytl1k@r0gers.c0m please?

mark p (Mark P), Saturday, 26 March 2005 01:51 (twenty years ago)

sent! i think i forgot the "." the first time.

aside: to those of you hosting disc 2 mp3s, you can take the files down now if you like.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 March 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

i'm thinking when this is all over we can make the whole works available as a torrent.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 26 March 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Mark p... as you're next in line, do please go ahead. I'm stuck for the weekend without a) broadband b) FTP and c) the ability to play MP3s on this steam-driven laptop.

However, I have got something which I prepared earlier.

However, it's not a great follow-on from Fletcher Henderson.

However, it's VERY short. Maximalist to the max, but VERY short. And in that respect, it sits reasonably OK after just about anything.

If there's nothing from Mark by Sunday evening, shall I go ahead anyway?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 26 March 2005 16:32 (twenty years ago)

yes.

Blossom in Paris (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 27 March 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

OK, I went ahead anyway. Ding ding! Next!

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Sunday, 27 March 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

i wouldn't mind if somebody picked something by glenn branca. just out of personal interest as i have nothing by him in my collection. his guitar sound is quite huge after what i have read about it.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, if nobody picks Branca or some crazy loud chaotic shoegaze track then all is lost.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

bump. get yer booties in gear, kids!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:53 (twenty years ago)

after mike does his track ill be ready

charleston charge (chaki), Thursday, 31 March 2005 04:55 (twenty years ago)

Maximalism? You mean ELP or Polyphonic Spree? ;)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 31 March 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

No, we mean ELO and Polly Jean Harvey.

BARMS, Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

gmail account still has the same pword (ilovemusic).

dear god, if someone posts a polyphonic spree track i will jump off the empire state building.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 13:53 (twenty years ago)

Next up: The Polyphonic Spree - 'Joy To The World' (Hongroe's Jump Off (The Empire State Building) Remix).

BARMS, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

"Talking to you is like jumping off the Empire State Building."

BARMROE, Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

i updated the gmail inbox so now everything from the end of disc 3 and the start of disc 4 is in there. i had to make "intro introspection" a smaller bitrate so gmail would let me send it, but the original rip is still on the blog.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 14:43 (twenty years ago)

wow, the spanky & our gang track is such an awesome segue out of "come into my heart"!

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:03 (twenty years ago)

mine will be up later tonight (I won't be getting home until like 9-10 pm EST though, in case anyone wants to sneak in between)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 31 March 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

If ANYONE has a CD copy of that Spanky & Our Gang track, PLEASE alert me here...!! (The CDs are hard to come by, though I'm tempted to get the 4-CD box set, as expensive as it is)

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

does anyone want to sneak in before michael? matos? j-dubs? BLOUNT?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

OH CRAP I FORGOT.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 31 March 2005 16:34 (twenty years ago)

It's fucking BATSHIT CRAZY that I read all those entries on maximalism and have yet to see Boston - More than a Feeling or ANY, ANYELO songs. W. T. F.

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

"all" = six entries.

POST SOMETHING YOU LAZY SHITS

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I WILL POST WHEN I GET HOME

:)

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was "BATSHIT CRAZY" that Mission Of Burma's "Secrets" never made it on the ILmiXor disc Secrets mix..

Then I thought: how nice that something so obvious didn't HAVE to be on this disc.

donut debonair (donut), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

GAH I HATE THIS THEME

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 31 March 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

Are there instructions as to how people submit stuff and how they're hearing the current uploads?

I'd like to get involved in one of these (although I have no idea what to contribute to "maximalism". I'd rather wait for a new theme, unless you're all desperate.)

phil jones (interstar), Thursday, 31 March 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

phil, i'll sign you up (i know you asked before but i think i forgot to send you the invite from blogger). i wanted to do "maximalism" as two discs since people's tracks are so long but i didn't realize so many of you were having trouble with the theme. i believe we were going to do "voyeurism" for disc 5.

as for instructions -- when i send you an invitation, you'll be able to create a blogger account and post to the ilmixor blog (http://ilmixor.blogspot.com). if you have your own hosting space, use that to host your mp3, otherwise gmail it to ilmixor (at) gmail (dot) com either as an attachment or a yousendit link.

the majority of the mp3s are still on the blog for download, but ALL of them are at the shared gmail account.

username: ilmixor
pword: ilovemusic

anyway, the theme. i do want to finish the maximalism disc, so basically i'd like anyone who CAN contribute to it to say so. and everyone else can do "voyeurism."

sorry, im having some serious issues with my blogger identity.

they have doctors for that, you know.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 14:52 (twenty years ago)

well can someone go in the meantime, as insurance that we'll actually have something today?

(i know i'm being cranky, but if people's interest in ilmixor is dwindling, i really don't wanna drag the project out for another month or whatever. can i maybe get an informal headcount of who's still on board with this?)

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

I'm still on board- going to try to write my entry over the weekend if I can find the time.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Friday, 1 April 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely still on board! I've burnt and played Chutzpah, Pop Top 40 and Secret loads of times. Maximalism is definitely the biggest challenge thus far, though.

Jody, I liked your idea about working with a tighter group who are prepared to commit to timely responses.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 April 2005 22:54 (twenty years ago)

i like the idea too, but i'm not sure how to implement it now.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

and i don't think "maximalism" is that big of a challenge! it's a hell of a lot easier than "secret." just, you know, take a young marble giants song and find the opposite of it. voila, maximalism.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

i refuse to believe a board full of dance kids and noize dudes can't come up with "big" songs.

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:09 (twenty years ago)

dude I would totally offer to go again, but I kind of feel like I basically just went. but I mean, yeah, I don't think the topic is that hard. I already know what I would post.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:33 (twenty years ago)

i like the idea too, but i'm not sure how to implement it now.

Maybe by running it through e-mail, rather than relying on people remembering to check each ILM thread to see whether their turn has come up? It would certainly allow for more instant/timely reminders, at least...

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

And maybe maximalism is hard because it can trap you into thinking that you have to find the! most! maximalist! tune! ever?

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Friday, 1 April 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

I'm going next. Gimme a few minutes.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

OK, the text is saved as a draft but not published and the MP3 has been droploaded to JBR, so all she has to do is add it and hit "publish." Next!

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:38 (twenty years ago)

And maybe maximalism is hard because it can trap you into thinking that you have to find the! most! maximalist! tune! ever?

I'm not so sure about that -- everyone here is a big fat music geek, and therefore everyone wants to outdo everyone else by picking a superfantastic track that the others haven't heard or wouldn't have thought to choose. No matter what the theme is. I think that spirit of competition raises the quality of the mix as well.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:39 (twenty years ago)

dude I would totally offer to go again, but I kind of feel like I basically just went. but I mean, yeah, I don't think the topic is that hard. I already know what I would post.

you can go again! ain't no one here but us chickens.

OK, the text is saved as a draft but not published and the MP3 has been droploaded to JBR, so all she has to do is add it and hit "publish." Next!

will do, in a sec.

Maybe by running it through e-mail, rather than relying on people remembering to check each ILM thread to see whether their turn has come up? It would certainly allow for more instant/timely reminders, at least...

yeah, but should i take disc 5 to e-mail or wait for this round to finish cycling through and continue the project through e-mail?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:43 (twenty years ago)

you can go again! ain't no one here but us chickens

Oh, then I'll volunteer to get back in the queue in case things stall again.

yeah, but should i take disc 5 to e-mail or wait for this round to finish cycling through and continue the project through e-mail?

Perhaps once Disc 4 is finished, ask for confirmation from those in the Disc 5 queue. Those people signed up, and they weren't expecting their turn to happen for a while, so perhaps they haven't been checking this thread regularly as of late. Depending on the response at that time, you can decide whether to start conducting things over email instead.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 2 April 2005 00:55 (twenty years ago)

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 2 April 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

i dunno, the pace of progress is slow. the participants all have access to the blog so is the solution to adopt a first-come-first-posted kind of thing? if you feel you have a good song to follow the one up there then maybe go to the blog and make a stub of a posting to hold your spot while you sort out the posting draft and the file upload. just a thought. maybe limit it to a maximum of two or three songs per day so that there is a bit of time to construct it. such an approach might cut down or eliminate the days of thumb twiddling and jbr prompting that is involved in managing a queue.

i love the ilmixor idea, i am disappointed in the possibility that it's execution might wear out jbr's patience and that'd be the end of it.

gspm (gspm), Saturday, 2 April 2005 03:15 (twenty years ago)

Hahah I totally suck, and fell asleep last night.

But I have just saved my entry as a draft and loaded the MP3 into the gmail inbox. Jody, it is all yours to publish.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Saturday, 2 April 2005 05:19 (twenty years ago)

i am disappointed in the possibility that it's execution might wear out jbr's patience

i'm fine; i just needed a night's sleep.

the participants all have access to the blog so is the solution to adopt a first-come-first-posted kind of thing?

at this point, since we have relatively few people left, it could work. but i'd still want to be able to expedite when things get slow.

tracer?

jody von oy (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 12:02 (twenty years ago)

I get the blog invitation error too. :-(

Co-ordinating something like this strikes me as an excellent use for an ILM wiki. Each potential contributor could add their name to the sign-up list, or their entry to a linked tracklist (possibly with their write-up).

There's be little trawling through long messages like this one etc.

If people here are interersted, I'd be willing to set up a wiki to experiment, (just the co-ordination of the ILMiX) and see how people feel.

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

hint for windows users: ctrl+f. enter the search term you're looking for, and it scans the text of the webpage for you, so you don't have to trawl through any long and winding threads.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

phil, i'm sending you another invitation. check your gmail in a minute or so.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

got it thanks ... maybe I have something for maximalism, but I want to check out what everyone else has put up to see if it compares.

phil jones (interstar), Monday, 4 April 2005 16:41 (twenty years ago)

Is tracer going to do a track? I'm ready to go whenever.

(xpost, you betcha. sending invite now.)

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm curious ...

Can I get an informal poll on people's familiarity with the songs on ILMiXor? For instance, out of the sixty-odd tracks from the four mixes so far, I had heard about six of them before ILMiXor began (not including the ones I chose, of course).

So, about 90% of these songs are new to me, and I'm not sure if that's a high or low percentage compared to everyone else on here.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

they're maybe 85%-87% new to me.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 4 April 2005 22:38 (twenty years ago)

if this mutates into something else post-maximalism, i would like to keep contributing...(or if you are looking for dance geek entries for maximalism, i would happily oblige!)

basquiat (disco stu), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

mostly new songs for me too (or new versions of familiar songs)....
this is fun.

m0stly clean (m0stly clean), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:38 (twenty years ago)

Same with me - only maybe half a dozen that I knew before.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 08:01 (twenty years ago)

OK, just counted and there are actually 12 that I knew before:
Chutzpah - 7. Pop Top 40 - 0. Secret - 1. Maximalism - 4.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:03 (twenty years ago)

So is Tracer on for tonight then? Because if not, I can put something up later on when I get home from work.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

i'm cool with that.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Okay, sounds good.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

i think i count 4 or 5 songs that I'd previously heard. and another two on the disc in progress.

gspm (gspm), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

okay kevin go for it, hopefully i'll sneak in afterwards

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Okay- just put up my entry. And Tracer- I didn't mean to cut in line, but I was so worried about screwing up and missing my turn that I figured I'd do it while I still had the time...

Kevin H (Kevin H), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 19:15 (twenty years ago)

roxor. i'll fix the title formatting when blogger isn't being so crappy.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

i have heard 15 of the songs (not counting mine) before. most of the stuff i haven't heard is greeeeat!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for fixing that, Jody- I didn't even notice the formatting.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 21:43 (twenty years ago)

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to get in on "maximalism", but I posted on the last disc. But I'll go if nobody else is going. I can post something tonight (= after I get back from the baseball game).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 8 April 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

yes please.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 8 April 2005 20:15 (twenty years ago)

I can go too. I almost just jumped in and went last night. I started auditioning a few things. Then I realized if I did the blurb I'd end up staying up later than I wanted. But I could post tonight.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 8 April 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

When somebody is able to host the file, email me and I'll post the permanent link.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 06:29 (twenty years ago)

Barry -- direct link just emailed to you.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and go as well. Fuck it. 4 days without a post or whatever is just silly. Especially with all the folks on ILM. and I totally had something in mind already, and it actually follows on quite nicely from the direction that Barry took things. also I'm bored and have three beers left in the fridge.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 9 April 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

3? o shit. what time is it?

i think you should go. but how many beers have you already had? the more the better obv.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 10:12 (twenty years ago)

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 10:14 (twenty years ago)

I can go anytime you like. I was getting tired waiting to see if I was gonna get chased to do it but clearly not.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 9 April 2005 17:40 (twenty years ago)

your track (which i'm uploading right now) brings us to 77:41

It's actually 67:41. One or two more tracks, then, or do you still want to end it here?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Wasn't it widely agreed upon that we needed an ELO track on here somewhere?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

77:41 is correct.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

no, you only have the first 3:45 of my track (which is 14 minutes).

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm ... I have no idea why I didn't notice the track cutting off ... although I do remember thinking "wtf, this isn't much of an 'extended' version".

Thanks, JBR. And thanks for all your work on ILMiXor. If you decide to revive it after a few months off and are looking for contributors, give me a shout.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:35 (twenty years ago)

i think it's run its course for now. i want it to go out on a high note.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 9 April 2005 20:41 (twenty years ago)

o no! more!

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Sunday, 10 April 2005 06:11 (twenty years ago)

not right now. if someone else wants to pick this up again via gmail, i'll be happy to participate.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 12:32 (twenty years ago)

I feel bad I was too caught up in other things to keep commenting and listening properly as I went, but this is all fine stuff and I'm grabbing the tracks now. Rah! :-) As a collective comp effort, this is another reason why 2005 is the year of the home anthologizers.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 10 April 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

i'll have the blog updated by tomorrow.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

This has been big fun, thanks JBR.

Ferlin Husky (noodle vague), Sunday, 10 April 2005 14:48 (twenty years ago)

This mix is flawless. It's definitely the best one of the four. Going out on a high note -- absolutely.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 10 April 2005 17:36 (twenty years ago)

Yeah- that was a lot of fun- thanks for putting this together, jody.

Kevin H (Kevin H), Sunday, 10 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

you betcha. but thank austin for proposing the idea.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 10 April 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

You betcha! it's been a pleasure leeching new music off you guys. I don't see any reason why it can't pick back up when some group off folks is ready, either. (I'm presently involved in two separate similar projects organized in different places.)

austin, still, Monday, 11 April 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Maybe just a rest and retox. Summer comps could be a fun seasonal idea.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 11 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

sorry i've been remiss in updating the blog -- i've gotten sidetracked by my tireless quest for CASH MONEY. i'm on the case.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:00 (twenty years ago)

blog updated.

mr. troubled diva, could you compile another set of booklets for 3 & 4? that would be most rad.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 11 April 2005 21:53 (twenty years ago)

I'll see what I can do... gimme a few days... I'm being a bit of a flaky commitment-dishonouring diva right now.

I've also corrected one teensy mistake in the first booklet, at Barry's request (it was just a misplaced credit for the Fischer-Z track).

Thanks for doing all of this in such good humour, jody - massively appreciated.

jody the country girl doll (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

OK, I've put links to all four individual booklets on the blog.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Is anyone else ready to resurrect this or maybe interested in doing it on a smaller scale?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)
