take, these broken wings ... and learn to shove them up yer ass till it bleeds.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

only "defensible" thing -- this cool and cute girl from my high school (2 years ahead of me) for some reason went to a mr. mister concert in 1986 that got taped for MTV -- and she can be seen in this taped concert.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

if you're going to pick bands to do threads like this about you might want to pick bands who actually suck.

without Mr Mister there is no 'Euphoria (Nino's Dream)' therefore they're classic

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:22 (twenty years ago)

Their drummer went onto play for King Crimson --- which astounds me.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

"Broken Wings" sounds great when yer playing "Vice City".

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

I saw them live, opening for Heart in 1986. They were the most boringest thing in the world.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

they look like an in-house "Miami Vice" band

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

They are indeed indefensible, part of the reason mainstream radio sucked in the fall of '85 and spring of '86.

But "Is This Love" doesn't suck as badly as the two number ones.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

I saw them live, opening for Heart in 1986. They were the most boringest thing in the world.

...Dude, what were you doing at a mid-80's Heart show? That's a bold-ass confession.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Tom, delete ILX please.

Ken L (Ken L), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

80s heart was never cool -- but a lot of the hot chiXors at my high school liked them = you learn to tolerate 'em.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:37 (twenty years ago)

they look like an in-house "Miami Vice" band

I think they were supposed to.

"Is It Love" was a childhood fave. I dug it out a while back, and as far as that whole mid-80s synth-pop-disguised-as-rock-and-roll thing goes, it holds up pretty well.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

mr. mister was to synthpop what the jeff healey band were to the blues. which is NOT good.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

Any time I think of Mr. Mister it reminds me of Frank Nelson, from the Jack Benny Program.

"Oh Mister? Mister?"
http://www.dannythestreet.com/franknelson/flr0001.jpg
"Yyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeessssss?"

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

In re: Heart: I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, okay? We all love Heart, okay?

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:43 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, but in the mid-80's even Heart hated Heart.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Matt, how DARE you DEFEND your AFFINITY for a band NO ONE LIKES! The SHAME! (I am NOT being SERIOUS in the SLIGHTEST, by the way!)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

In re: Mr. Mister, I only rank the Fixx below them, 80's-wise, and that's with a lot of admiration for Jamie West-Oram. In third-to-last place, Wang Chung.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

the bloke in the lighter shirt looks like a Sting clone, the others look like sub Toto/ Chicago clones.

Britain had a similar band to Mr Mister - "The Cutting Crew"

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

Cutting Crew actually had a "The" attached to their name? Wicked!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

So far this thread is shaping up as defend the indefensible: the "Vice City" soundtrack.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:51 (twenty years ago)

Mr Mister was alright, but they could not hold a candle to The Outfield.

Also the lead singer/bass player was scary because he had an enormous forehead and a tiny face.

Disco Nihilist (mjt), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

mr. mister was to synthpop what the jeff healey band were to the blues. which is NOT good.

Oh, no argument there.

What I meant by was: Mr. Mister were among a legion of mid-80s pop/rock "acts" who were packaged as "bands" even though all of the music (save the guitars) was MIDI sequenced. There was this strange thinking that pop listeners might be scarred by the notion that these groups weren't polished, hard-workin', rock'n'rollin' musicians (maaaaan). Meanwhile, anyone who was actually into synthpop didn't give a shit that Depeche Mode didn't have a "real" drummer. Kind of an embryonic version of the whole popist / rockist debate...

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

but the fixx actually had some good songs -- and at least ONE good album!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

just checked it's "Cutting Crew" no The

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:57 (twenty years ago)

the bloke in the lighter shirt looks like a Sting clone, the others look like sub Toto/ Chicago clones.

actually, the dude in the lighter shirt looked like peter cetera (to me, anyway) -- a pity that they didn't have a "glory of love" in 'em.

There was this strange thinking that pop listeners might be scarred by the notion that these groups weren't polished, hard-workin', rock'n'rollin' musicians (maaaaan).

all hail glass tiger! (they were, like, the KINGS of that sorta thing.)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

Well, I fuckin' love the Fixx, so I should probably sit the rest of this one out.

Fuck the Outfield, though.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

all hail glass tiger! (they were, like, the KINGS of that sorta thing.)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

..and into my car

billy ocean PWNS everyone else mentioned on this thread, you know that yes? :-)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Glass Tiger were Canadians.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

I always thought the lead gent in Mr.Mister was trying a litle too hard to be Sting.....and failing. Miserably. And that "Broken Wings" song is a fuckin' stalker's manifesto.

Glass Tiger were Canadians.

Glass Tiger were pederasts.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

And that "Broken Wings" song is a fuckin' stalker's manifesto.

?!?

i thought it was a not-too-subtle Jesus Freak anthem (that bit about "the Book of Love" and all that).

and the jesus-freakery = ANOTHER strike against the misters.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

another corporate rock band I associate with this AOR rubbish is Huey Lewis & the News

DJ Martian (djmartian), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

Glass Tiger to thread for possible slander suit!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:07 (twenty years ago)

glass tiger had REALLY bad mullets, even by 80s standards.

that's not libellous!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

huey lewis & the news is kinda absolved b/c of the connection to "my aim is true" elvis costello.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Baby I don't understand
Why we can't just hold on
To each other's hands
This time will be the last
I fear unless I make it all so clear
I need you so

Take these broken wings
And learn to fly again
And learn to live so free
And when we hear the voices sing
The book of love will open up
And let us in

Baby I think tonight
We can take what was wrong
And make it right
I need you so
Baby it's all I know
That you're half of the flesh
And blood makes me whole
I need you so

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

Glass Tiger were Canadians.

Glass Tiger were pederasts.

Funny, I've dealt with two members of Glass Tiger in my work. One was an absolute sweetheart, the other was a total dickhead.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:11 (twenty years ago)

I thought "kyrie" was Mr Mister's big hit... has it not been mentioned, or did I just miss it? I fucking hated that song and never understood how it ever got to be a hit. "Broken Wings" I could understand.

And who the fuck was Glass Tiger? I mean, I know of them, but have never heard anything by them.. I always thought they were some second rate State Fair act. Did they have a radio hit?

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

And who the fuck was Glass Tiger? I mean, I know of them, but have never heard anything by them.. I always thought they were some second rate State Fair act. Did they have a radio hit?

"don't forget me when i'm gone" (with a BRYAN ADAMS cameo!)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Oh I quite liked them. Probably as much as Johnny Hates Jazz and Living in a Box. Hated the outfits, but the songs were alright.

nathalie doing a soft foot shuffle (stevie nixed), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

"don't forget me when i'm gone" (with a BRYAN ADAMS cameo!)

Thanks. Doesn't help one bit. Can you sing a few lines?

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:18 (twenty years ago)

Glass Tiger also had "Someday", which was better than "Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone".

"Broken Wings" and "Kyrie" are both fantastic songs. Calling "broken Wings" a Jesus-freak anthem should probably make you rethink your grasp of the English language.

The tin-eared reactionaryism of ILMers who regularly got their books dumped in junior high appears to be on the rise again!

The Ghost of OH NO HE DIDN'T (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

no can do wr2 singing, but here are the lyrics:

You take my breath away
Love thinks it's here to stay
There's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh can this be true

If you could see what I have seen
(The) broken hearts and broken dreams
Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh! but you don't care

CHORUS:

Don't forget me when I'm gone
My heart would break
I have loved you for so long
It's all I can take

You, you take my breath away
Love thinks it's here to stay
There's still so much for me to do
And I can't stop loving you
Oh! can this be true

CHORUS:

Then I wake up and you're not there
Pain finds me everywhere
Oh! but you don't care

hey, if dissing mr. mister and glass tiger is reactionary-ism then i'll wear it proudly.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:21 (twenty years ago)

At the very least, they showed more imagination (spelling-wise) in choosing a band name than Duran Duran, Talk Talk or (arguably) The The. (Tho much less so than Toni Tony Tone.)

Actually, (aside from confusing them with the Hooters), I have surprisingly pleasant memories of "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings", considering that they were released around late '85/early '86 - a particularly lousy period for radio (at least in my opinion.)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

i don't mind the hooters ... they were actually pretty good songwriters (for REAL).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

I'll take Glass Tiger over Mr Mister: better Bryan Adams manqué than El Lay hacks attempting sincerity with big ballads.

I despise Cutting Crew's "(I Just Died) In Your Arms Tonight," but their other hit "I've Been in Love Before" has that airy, synthy "Your Wildest Dreams"

Let's call this genre poof-rock (billowy synths, guitar wankery, HUGE mullets). I'm curious as to why the U.S. marketplace was vulnerable to such a hostile takeover. Mr Mister, Glass Tiger, and CC, Heart, Starship, Richard Marx. Anything else.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

1985 crap: "separate lives," "say you say me," "the power of love," "we built this city," "the heat is on," "heaven," "can't fight this feeling," "if you love somebody set them free," "all i need," "never," "never surrender" > 10 songs from 1985 that are duds (and that's only going down to #40).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 16:56 (twenty years ago)

Michael Keaton sucked in that.

Radio didn't suck until glam metal completely took over and inspired teenaged boys across America to flagrantly abuse bandannas.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Hahahaha yes, the big thing I'm concerned about is keeping up my ILM cred which is why I'm so full of lavish praise for everything that Justin Timberlake and The Streets release.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

Actually, I can't really remember a time when radio didn't suck - except for the mid-70's .. which I'm sure is 100% nostalgic.

xpost

touche'/whatever.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

Why all the hate for "We Built This City"? You can't tell me it's any cheesier than, say, "Man In Motion (St. Elmo's Fire?)" or "The Heat Is On", or about a hundred other 80s patio-party "rock" "anthems". The revisionist drubbing for this particular song is disproportionate when there were far worse tunes to come out of this time frame.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

"The revisionist drubbing for this particular song is disproportionate when there were far worse tunes to come out of this time frame."

Like "Kyrie" and "Broken Wings."

The video for "We Built This City" is at least splendid, odiferous cheese.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

I rather unreservedly love Starship right up until "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us", largely because on that song Grace Slick finally crossed the line from melodramatic to really stupid and overwrought.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

Man, this thread took off while i was a-lunchin'.

Anyone remember Vitamin Z? They made Glass Tiger sound like Glass Pantera.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

I've already said both of their big US hits were great! What more do you want? I mean, I could analyze the structure of "Broken Wings" for you if you want.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 17:41 (twenty years ago)

So, the real issue, then, is whether Grace Slick should have sung lead in Mr Mister.

Novo Combo was Michael Shreve's (ex-Santana, future HSAS drummer) band. Imagine Styx trying to be the Police.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:17 (twenty years ago)

spot on.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

I also completely lost my shit when "Living In A Box" came out! Wow I love that song.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

wait, could it be that novo combo was that BAND from that one UNBELIEVABLY AWFUL video on beavis and butthead?!?

there's a post where miccio describes that video better than i could. i will search for it!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't remember any Novo Combo videos.....and i don't think their album was ever released on disc (not, mind you, that I've ever looked for it). They were sort've a just-pre-MTV band.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

"Living in a Box" is an AWESOME song, by the way. It almost singularly typfies mid-to-late 80's pop. Big keybs. Gigantor drums. I have very fond memories of that from the summer of `87. Anyone remember "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" by Shona Laing?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

Anyone remember "Glad I'm Not a Kennedy" by Shona Laing?

i remember it!

we (i.e., me and my college off-campus roommates) used to sing "living in a box" about our off-campus apartment (which was the size of a small box, natch).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

miccio's post re this famously awful video:

another What Was That Video RFI: they watched some ghastly thing with thunderbolts, a little asian girl holding a flower, a guy who looked like Santana dipped in dork sauce, lots of goofy effects, five bands members walking down a hill, etc. etc. It was HORRIFICALLY cheesy.
-- Anthony Miccio (anthonymicci...), April 13th, 2003.

and the thread i created sometime thereafter to ID this video (and no, no-one ever did ID it):

ok, someone PLEASE ID this video!!!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:29 (twenty years ago)

With each sophisto-pop band memory we call up, we drive away the Mr Mister demogoblins. Keep it up!

Anyone remember Boys Don't Cry's "I Wanna Be a Cowboy"?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Tttttttttttttrrrrrrrrigger, of course.

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

Anyone remember Boys Don't Cry's "I Wanna Be a Cowboy"?

For some reason, I get this confused with both "Tarzan Boy' by Baltimora and....fuck.....there's another cowboy song circa `89 with a vocalist who sang just like Alison Moyet. I want to say the line "ready for the 90's" was in there too....and they had an annoying white bass player with dreadlocks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:34 (twenty years ago)

Fuck....

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

I get it confused with "Ride. Ride the White Horse." I don't remember the proper name of the song or who sang it. (No, not T-Rex.)

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

"white horse," by laidback.

(a GENUINE synth-funk classic, BTW)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Got it...."the Wild Wild West" by the GOD FUCKING AWFUL Escape Club. Phew!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

For that matter, "I Wanna be a Cowboy" also reminds me of "Da Da Da" + "One Night in Bangkok"

dave225 (Dave225), Monday, 18 April 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

ok, what's sad is that THESE songs are what most people think of when they think of 80s music.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

When did "sad" become synonymous with "awesome"?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Well, uhh, Pat Mastelotto's doing a lot of fun things in King Crimson these days.

Øystein (Øystein), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

I'd much rather hear "I Wanna Be a Cowboy" than any fucking Poison song ever again, if I had a time machine I would go back in time and prevent their births if the ripple effect on the space-time continuum could guarantee that no form of that noxious, fucking horrifying abortion of a band ever existed in any imaginable dimension.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 18 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

Dan, so you don't like Poison, eh?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

i agree w/ dan in this regard: early- and mid-80s pop music was better than late-80s pop music PRECISELY b/c the latter period featured so much crap hair-metal. it was SO BAD that even FUCKING PEARL JAM -- who SUCK and who have inspired nothing but TOTAL SHIT --was a relief from the poisons. the nelsons, the warrants, the wingers, the cinderellas, the britny foxes, etc.

I'll take any "Slippery When Wet" single over Mr Mister's (barring "Is This Love") any time. I'll take Poison over Mr Mister. Most of those hair-metal bands wrote at least two great uptempo pieces.

Paging Mr Eddy...

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

is the song about the "Only The Mockingbird" or whatever mr. mister or cutting crew? I saw that on VH1 Classic and it was entertaining

miccio (miccio), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

I think it was Cutting Crew, so I guess I can't defend Mr. Mister. Not sure I ever even heard them!

miccio (miccio), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:07 (twenty years ago)

What's with the hatred for the mid-eighties. Personally, I think of it as the creative peak for The Smiths, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran. True, New Wave, Post Punk etc. had become just pop by then, BUT WHAT POP! Plus, the best italo disco tunes come from that period.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

True, New Wave, Post Punk etc. had become just pop by then, BUT WHAT POP! Plus, the best italo disco tunes come from that period.

but that wasn't the pop that we were talking about. the only thing that the likes of mr. mister, cutting crew, glass tiger, etc. have in common with the likes of the smiths, the cure, depeche mode, etc. is contemporaneity.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

I can't decide which was more crap: Mr. Mister, Cutting Crew, Mike & the Mechanics, or The Outfield.

darin (darin), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

"We Built This City" is indeed awful. However, besides "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" it sounds like a true classic masterpiece.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:30 (twenty years ago)

Yup. The two other Cutting Crew hits - the "Mockingbird" one and "I've Been in Love Before" - are way better than "I Just Died in Your Arms Tonight"

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:41 (twenty years ago)

Strangely, I must confess that I like "We Built This City" although I know its crap. One of the things I miss about all these songs is the production. No one was afraid of over-producing back then. And I remember how some of this stuff at sounded "huge" at least for a brief period. Of course, these things made it all sound dated after a month, but thats another matter.

daavid (daavid), Monday, 18 April 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah. "We Built This City" = Fairlight synthesizer love!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

I never liked the way things sounded in that era. It seemed kind of a matter of "OK, we are using synths, but let's make those synths sound a bit harder and less obviously synthy so that we may sell some records to synthpop haters mistaking it for "real" music as well".

I always preferred the typical analog synth sounds of the early 80s to the harder and more "rock" oriented synth sounds of the late 80s. And the fact those softer analog synth sounds returned in the 90s, and are still around to a stronger extent than ever before, kind of tells me I was right in the long run.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:02 (twenty years ago)

Oh please, let's not talk of "We Built This City" anymore...it makes me nauseous. Also C*tting Cr*w is just foul language.

I also rather dread this thread even as I welcome it. Ha ha. I should have known one day I would have to stand up in a Mr. Mister court of law. So here is my confession:

I can't stand Broken Wings, it should banished from earth forever, pwneded into the ground mercilessly, but I did buy whatever single they released before that, maybe a year or two before that - a song I can remember absolutely nothing about now, not even the title. And of course this embarasses me because Mr. Mister are surely comparable to Iggy Pop and Lou Reed for sheer impact. They took rock and roll by the balls and single handedly re-wrote the history of popular music today. The legendary Mr. Mister, ladies and gentlemen.

I actually did hear a song by Novo Combo a few years ago.
I can't be bothered to read the rest of this thread because the mention of Peter Cetera and then Huey Lewis & The News is going to proceed to have me vomiting in the toilet very soon.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:06 (twenty years ago)

This thread is not dead until somebody brings up Petra (oh, shit, I did...) :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:08 (twenty years ago)

Silent Disco: was it "Something Real (Inside Me, Inside You) [LOVE the parenthetical subtitle!]? I only know this useless fact cuz I saw the video once on VH-1 Classic.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:11 (twenty years ago)

..."let's make those synths sound a bit harder and less obviously synthy"

I've never really felt that late 80's synths were harder or less synthy. They always sounded very synthy to me. Can you give me a specific example of what you mean Geir?

daavid (daavid), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:14 (twenty years ago)

I also remember the guitars of that period sounded very synthy/un-guitarry

daavid (daavid), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:16 (twenty years ago)

Surely I can't be the only one who remembers Miles Davis' phrase of Mr. Mister in his circa-'85 interviews.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:43 (twenty years ago)

But he also loved Scritti Politti!

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:45 (twenty years ago)

well, they were technically good musicians. and weren't they studio musicians -- he may have played with them for all i know.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:46 (twenty years ago)

Yeah. He covered "Perfect Way" and played on "Oh Patti." He also pushed Sting around in a recording session.

Re Mr. Mister, he said stuff along the lines of "I don't know what these white boys' girlfriends tell them, but they write some beautiful chord changes."

I have to confess I've developed a soft spot for "Broken Wings" (it's kinda sweet, no?) after hating it for 20 years. The soft spot, of course, might just be part of my skull.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

I love "Broken Wings"!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

miles davis also covered "time after time."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 18 April 2005 23:50 (twenty years ago)

"I get this confused with both "Tarzan Boy' by Baltimora"

NO! "Tarzan Boy" is a marvel: great Italo-style disco along the lines of Lime and the Pet Shop Boys' "Paninaro." And the video is the gayest thing I've ever seen. Ever.

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 00:53 (twenty years ago)

Silent Disco: was it "Something Real (Inside Me, Inside You) [LOVE the parenthetical subtitle!]? I only know this useless fact cuz I saw the video once on VH-1 Classic.

No, from the research I've done and from memory, the single I bought was called "Hunters Of The Night". "Something Real..." was apparently from 1987.

The Silent Disco of Glastonbury (Bimble...), Tuesday, 19 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 17 April 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

What I meant by was: Mr. Mister were among a legion of mid-80s pop/rock "acts" who were packaged as "bands" even though all of the music (save the guitars) was MIDI sequenced. There was this strange thinking that pop listeners might be scarred by the notion that these groups weren't polished, hard-workin', rock'n'rollin' musicians (maaaaan). Meanwhile, anyone who was actually into synthpop didn't give a shit that Depeche Mode didn't have a "real" drummer. Kind of an embryonic version of the whole popist / rockist debate...

The main difference being Depeche Mode never tried to "rock" like an AOR band. Mr. Mister used synths to try to sound like a "rock band". Had they used the to sound like a typical synthpop act instead, they might have had more credibility among those of us who did actually prefer synthpop to AOR.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 18 April 2007 08:38 (eighteen years ago)

Why all the hate for "We Built This City"? You can't tell me it's any cheesier than, say, "Man In Motion (St. Elmo's Fire?)" or "The Heat Is On", or about a hundred other 80s patio-party "rock" "anthems".

Maybe because, even though Glen Frey was involved with a couple of OK enough country-pop concept albums in the early 70s, none of them has ever been involved in creating a classic album such as "Surrealistic Pillow".

You know, there is something really dreadful about acts you were once into sinking down to the boring AOR level.

Ballistic, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 03:08 (sixteen years ago)

Ha ha, I love a number of Steve Winwood's songs. Granted, I haven't listened to them in 20 years or so, but come on, who doesn't love "Valerie"?

Regarding Mr. Mister, when I was in kindergarten, back in '85, my cousin gave me a handful of records - one of them being Mr. Mister. Gotta say, I loved that record at the time.

musicfanatic, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

yea Stevie was a wise purchase. dunno why i wanted the non-singles tracks of Mr. Mister. they really aren't memorable.

Ballistic, Wednesday, 24 February 2010 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

i kinda liked back in the high life way back when. the later more explicitly blooz-beer commercial music that winwood came out w/ after that record takes a bit of a shine of his other (better) 80s work, though.

"Broken Wings" is pretty gross.

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 03:10 (eight years ago)

I'll say this much about this nothing act. Not only did the drummer go on to be a longstanding member of King Crimson, but I guess the singer has had a long, storied career as a hitmaker, co-writing (with former bandmate Patrick Leonard) "I'll Remember" for Madonna, among other things. Had no idea.

Thanks for the piece either way, because now I know it was Mr. Mister who did "Is It Love," a song I've had somewhere in my head since it was used in the end credits to "Stakeout."

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 05:26 (eight years ago)

Crap song, crap band. At the very least, no one seems to listen to them anymore; I'm guessing the only time they've entered the public consciousness since the 1980s is with that stupid Train song.

I can't remember how Kyrie goes without mentally hearing it segue into Breakout by Swing Out Sister due to a 20 year old tv ad for a 'hits of the 80s' compilation that featured brief clips of both songs next to each other (Kyrie eleison, down the road that I must travel - BREAKOUT!)

soref, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 06:17 (eight years ago)

I thought "Broken Wings" was used to great effect two times in the film "MacGruber", still waiting on someone to explain to me why the drummer for Mr. Mister is the longest serving drummer for King Crimson

Florin Cuchares, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 09:06 (eight years ago)

Probably because he is a session dude with session chops who was assembled into a band.

Yes, but there are so many session dudes, with session chops, why Pat Mastelotto?

I am probably just jealous, anyway I don't want to derail this thread with prog-talk, though I do feel like I need to mention that in April, Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, and the drummer from Mr Mister will be hosting "Three of a Perfect Pair Music Camp", details can be found at www.threeofaperfectpair.com

How much money would YOU spend to go camping for a week with Pat Mastelotto? (If you answered one or two thousand dollars you are correct)

Florin Cuchares, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 18:25 (eight years ago)

Pages were better.

MarkoP, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 18:39 (eight years ago)

Why not Pat Mastelotto? He's a great drummer with an open mind, which is why you can find him on Mr. Mister records and XTC records, or The Rembrandts and King Crimson.

My middle school music teacher used "Broken Wings" to teach us about composition. We had to listen to it multiple times and map out the structure of the song and everything. It seemed insane to me even at the time, he had Coltrane and Beatles posters in his classroom but somehow thought "Broken Wings" was some perfect songwriting template. It's teachable, I guess.

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 22:31 (eight years ago)

That's funny, 'cuz the chorus lyric was near enough lifted from 'Blackbird' ...

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Tuesday, 12 December 2017 22:38 (eight years ago)

Oh yeah. Hmm.

geoffreyess, Tuesday, 12 December 2017 23:53 (eight years ago)

"Broken Wings" is a good song fuck you

Why not Pat Mastelotto?

See this is why I can't deal with ilm, no matter what I do Turrican is going to come out of the woodwork to stan for Pat fucking Mastelotto

Florin Cuchares, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 09:19 (eight years ago)

You seem to be surprised and even appalled that a great drummer with a great reputation is a great drummer with a great reputation.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)

I like posting this, where you can see Pat rocking the mullet *and* the song:

Haha, if you are talking about a UK TV ad there is at least a 70% chance I made that edit.

MaresNest, Wednesday, 13 December 2017 18:48 (eight years ago)

I actually remember the same TV ad! It used to air a lot on VH-1 circa 1996-1997.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 13 December 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

three years pass...

This thread made me cry laughing.

Reason for revive: up until this year, this holiday season, I'd never heard "Kyrie." Now, I hear it whenever I go into almost any retail outlet, which isn't too often given the pandemic. Is anyone else experiencing this? Is this just the weird mid-Atlantic pocket of the east coast US where this is happening?

I was just looking for this band's name after hearing the new War On Drugs tracks/rough mixes they shared on an instagram stream and thinking "broken wings"

StanM, Wednesday, 30 December 2020 16:44 (five years ago)
