1st week of July, folks. Let's get retarded in here.

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

I don't like the idea of the words "R. Kelly" and "TP" is such close proximity.

Austin Still (Austin, Still), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

he needs TP for his bunghole.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

im just going to sit quietly and shake with nervous energy in the corner...if that's ok with everyone

b b, Friday, 10 June 2005 13:20 (twenty years ago)

Now I’ve got this dumb look on my face

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:25 (twenty years ago)

shouldn't "Twelve Play 3" be Thirty-Six Play?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 13:59 (twenty years ago)

well, was TP2 28 ?
anyway, posting again what i asked in the trapped thread but : how come TP3 hasn't leaked yet when we're less than a month before its official release ? was used to albums leaking months before their official release date...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:21 (twenty years ago)

a lot of rap/R&B albums shuffle around tracklists up to the last minute, so that even if it had leaked by now, it probably wouldn't be the accurate. this is the tracklist that was announced last month:

TP3: Reloaded

1. In The Kitchen
2. T-Shirt
3. Piper, The
4. In The Kitchen
5. Trapped In The Closet Chapter 1
6. Trapped In The Closet Chapter 2
7. Trapped In The Closet Chapter 3
8. Trapped In The Closet Chapter 4
9. Trapped In The Closet Chapter 5
10. Slow Wind
11. Supa Dupa Man
12. Hit It Til The Morning
13. Reggae Bump, Bump
14. Touchin
15. Kiss You In Those Places
16. Heaven Chose You
17. Prelude
18. T-Shirt - (remix)
19. Playa's Only

8 tracks have leaked already ("In The Kitchen" and its remix, "Playa's Only", and the 5 parts of "Trapped In The Closet"), but it looks like there's still a lot that's yet unheard.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:27 (twenty years ago)

great !
it's kinda crazy to have the trapped suite right there in the middle...

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

yeah, I think I'd prefer it maybe a little later in the album, but for some reason I think it makes sense to have it in the middle, rather than upfront or way at the end. sequencing the orig. and remix of "In The Kitchen" seperately but with only 2 songs between them is kinda weird, though.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I thought Trapped wouldnt even be on the album... I like the idea of a Prelude as the 17th track...

Die Emanzipation von Baaderonixx (redukt) (Fabfunk), Friday, 10 June 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

God I cannot wait for this

haha I don't know if you meant that to be read like the end of Chapter 1 of "Trapped" but I totally did. "I'm googling the cover! I pull out my Baretta!"

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

this is getting crazy : i'm gonna shoot somebody !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 10 June 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

I seriously have a countdown calendar for the album next to my desk at work.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I wrote a thousand words about "Trapped" this morning. Needless to say, I am primed.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:08 (twenty years ago)

could someone explain this 'trapped in the closet' business?

i haven't heard any of them. What's the hubbub about?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

go to noize board and hear the fuckers and find out, dude. Or read the threads!

miccio (miccio), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

i'm trying to download them but i'm on dial-up.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

R. Kelly - "Trapped In The Closet"

Al (sitcom), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:14 (twenty years ago)

ah thanks, i was just searching for that.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:16 (twenty years ago)

was it just me or did happy people get totally slept on? i enjoy that album more and more each day!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

Happy People is pretty terrific but I gotta admit usually I'm sated by "Greatest Show On Earth."

miccio (miccio), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:22 (twenty years ago)

do i need to hear 'Trapped In The Closet' in order? Or will it work in some kind of non-linear way?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Friday, 10 June 2005 16:27 (twenty years ago)

you'd better hear it in order. it's a pretty sequential storyline, although it doesn't quite make sense even when you do hear it in order.

i have great expectations for "t-shirt (remix)"

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 10 June 2005 23:56 (twenty years ago)

is there even a previously released R. song called "T-Shirt"?

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 11 June 2005 01:45 (twenty years ago)

well, errr, yeah, it seems to be track 2 of the album, see ?

AleXTC (AleXTC), Saturday, 11 June 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

i also have great expectations for "piper, the"

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 11 June 2005 13:47 (twenty years ago)

from MTV.com:

More drama is on the way for R. Kelly. The singer has completed a mini movie for his five-part song, "Trapped in the Closet," and at the end, viewers are promised that chapters 6-10 are on the way soon. All five videos that comprise "Trapped in the Closet" will be released on a DVD accompanying Kelly's new album, TP3 Reloaded, which lands in stores July 5.

"Happy Summertime" is getting spins on the radio here already. you'd think he'd have gotten the stepping songs out of his system after Happy People.

I'm a little disappointed that the "Sex In The Kitchen" rmx doesn't appear to be on the final tracklist.

Jimmy Mod Is Sick of Being The Best At Everything (ModJ), Thursday, 30 June 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

this is pretty wonderful in a lot of ways. i don't know how seriously i can take "remote control" though. do you think i'm supposed to?

sean gramophone (Sean M), Thursday, 30 June 2005 07:28 (twenty years ago)

but was sex in the kitchen remix released as a single ? i haven't heard it anywhere, no video... it's a shame as it's awesome... the world should hear it !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 30 June 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

"Sex in the Kitchen (Remix)" was released as the B-side to the "Trapped in the Closet pt. 1" advance single or something, right?

I'm uploading the whole thing to YSI. It's really hard to digest it all in one sitting - "Happy Summertime," "Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend," "Remote Control." The Game totally phones in his guest verse on "Playas Only," but it barely matters.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Oh, man. "Sex In The Kitchen (Remix)" was my favorite of all the advance stuff (except for maybe Closet pt. IV). It's too bad it didn't make the album.

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah, sex in the kitchen (remix) is among my fav kels' trax ever ! it's just brilliant and catchy. it's a waste to have released it as a b-side. it would have been a great summer single.

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:49 (twenty years ago)

I'm glad I have the mp3 then.

I been drinking for twenty-four hour
so fucked up, you know a nigga need a shower

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:50 (twenty years ago)

This sounds like a different version of "Sex In The Kitchen" than the one that was released as a single. There are some extra synth flourishes and it seems like it's a few BPM faster. Am I wrong?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

the only downside of that remix is that he missed the opportunity to say something like "this is the remix to Sex In The Kitchen, hot and fresh out the kitchen".

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

Most of his remixes never appeared on albums (e.g. Fiesta, Boo-ooty, etc)

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 June 2005 15:59 (twenty years ago)

yeah but most of those remixes were made months after the album was released, which is not the case here (and wasn't the case with the "Ignition" or "Step In The Name Of Love" remixes, which were on Chocolate Factory).

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Normally he doesn't do this, but...

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

http://s39.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1MAR00CIZLWTS3JOO6MLDG3CT8

There was a little bit of debate about whether or not this was the proper retail release (since track 19, "Trapped in the Closet pt. 5", is edited, while the other four parts are dirty), but as far as I can tell a non-edited pt. 5 hasn't surfaced anywhere.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:19 (twenty years ago)

I'm starting to really like Playas Only, altho it's pretty much an updated 'Yeah'

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:42 (twenty years ago)

i prefer part five with the BOOPs.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 16:52 (twenty years ago)

The reggaeton track is amazing.

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I have this album to thank for driving me back to Aaron Hall. You ever think he sits at home and cries "that man stole my career!"

Candicissima (candicissima), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

I really think this might be his best album to date.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:11 (twenty years ago)

I really think this might be his best album to date.

I think it really might be. It's not excessively ambitious, in spite of its length, there's almost no filler, and the reggaeton/dancehall influences really complement his songs well - I'd love to hear a dub version of "Slow Wind."

If "Kitchen (Remix)" was on it, I don't think there'd be any doubt - as it stands I like it better than "Happy People" or "Chocolate Factory." I think I need to go back and listen to "12 Play" and "R." again, but I'm really stunned by how consistently great it is.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

This thing is crazy eclectic, some of the best ballads of his career ("Remote Control" - dude does a D'angelo-"Adore" and it works!, "Touchin" w/ Nivea!) and his stylistic lifts work because of his enthusiasm. I can't believe this guy's been working for about 15 years and his voice is only getting better.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure if his voice is getting better or if he's just singing songs that better suit his limited range.

The lack of filler on this album is shocking. Is there a track on here that couldn't make it as a single?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

He really has to release the reggaeton track as a single and then make a whole album in that style.

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

I like how the Confessions-rip "Kickin' It With Your Girlfriend" is about as close as this album gets to filler.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:13 (twenty years ago)

wow. haven't listened to it yet (am i the only one here to wait for the release ??) but a kels album without fillers sounds like a dream come true !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:39 (twenty years ago)

miccio - hahaha. "kickin it with your girlfriend" is great, one of my favourites on the album, cos it's so downplayed. i even posted it at said the gramophone.

sean gramophone (Sean M), Friday, 1 July 2005 09:55 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, sounds like b-level Usher to me, though better than Frankie J's "How To Deal" in that respect.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 11:56 (twenty years ago)

It does offer a flip on one of the album's themes ("don't bring the ones you love to the club, R. Kelly might be there").

miccio (miccio), Friday, 1 July 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

i've just watched the 4 first videos of trapped. part 4 is brilliant !

miccio (miccio), Monday, 4 July 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

queing this up now and quite excited.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 4 July 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Anyone else feeling guilty for paying for this album? I have been counting the hours today till I get off of work to go pick this up, but I can't shake an awful feeling about giving money to someone that pisses on 14 year olds. The obvious solution is just to download it but I'm feeling like I can't live without the dvd.

BrianVance, Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:22 (twenty years ago)

I don't feel guilty.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:31 (twenty years ago)

Watching the DVD I have to say that the story makes even less sense. Why doesnt he leave the flat straightaway? How could the cop stop him if he had just left the house? And how would Sylvester's girl know about this anyway?
Anyway, I cried and I laughed watching this (the leg cramp bit is comedy gold).

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I get to watch it after work tonight. FINALLY!

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

They're also showing the whole thing on BET tonight at 10 EST for people who don't have the DVD.

It's also up at MTV.com. I might watch it if I didn't want to see it all for the first time on my friend's big-screen.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

How anyone could describe 'Kickin it w yr Girlfriend' as filler esacpes me. Not too fond of that song with Nivea though

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

I consider it filler because it feels like a watered-down variation on what Usher's been doing for over a year on the radio. I love the Nivea song.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

i was gonna say you're crazy for acting like Usher invented doubletime R&B singing (neither did R. really, but he's a bit closer to the source), but yeah it does sound way too much like "Confessions Pt. 2".

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

(Sex) Love is What We Makin' is pretty much filler

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

yeah its not just the vocal but the thematic content, Al. Even repeatedly referring to his need to be a 'man' about it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 20:44 (twenty years ago)

could someone YSI 'sex in the kitchen(remix)', I'm very curious to hear it

GET THIS TRACK, EVERYONE

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

If I wasn't at work and nobody else had put this up I would have finally figured out YSI to share it.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:45 (twenty years ago)

You really should download this. I like it even better than "Ignition (remix)" which is saying a whole hell of a lot. It's a shame it didn't make the album.

If you need more incentive to download the track, I'll transcribe its spoken word intro:

"Now, look, man, enough is enough. Y'all need to leave me alone. On the real. I mean, can't y'all see I love y'all? Damn! I mean no matter what y'all say or try to do to me, I'm gonna love ya anyway. You know what I'm sayin'? What y'all need to do is let me go on and do this music. You know what I'm sayin'? I mean, what I gotta do? What I gotta do? Give you all my money? My cars, my houses, my clothes? I don't owe you nothin', maaaan! Go get a god damned job, dog! Shit, leave me alone. Go get a job! You don't owe me nothin', I don't owe you nothin', you know what I'm sayin'? I'm just tryna give you all this music tryna make y'all feel good, you know what I'm sayin'? That's all I'm tryna do! Let me do dat, huh? Let the R. do dat. Will ya? Mmmm?"

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

"Mmmm!" not "Mmmm?"

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

My favorite lines are either "I've been drinking for twenty-four hour/so fucked up, you know a nigga need a shower!" or "here were are in this kitchen/ sexing each other from feet to head/ some folks may ask the question/ 'why can't they just get a bed?'"

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 22:13 (twenty years ago)

I also like "Ain't gotta worry 'bout complainin' ass neighbors/ 'cause your boy is sittin' on some acres."

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i hear the crowd over here goin WHOA
i hear the crowd over there goin WHOA

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

i appreciate the hell out of that

aaronspell1ng, Wednesday, 6 July 2005 00:45 (twenty years ago)

See, I had ONLY heard the remix up until know and the original version with its anatomically impossible claim that he wants to toss your salad while making sweet love (Kells into that yoga, dawg!) is fuckin' killing me.
I have several albums that I need to listen to, that i'm gettin' PAID to listen to but all i wanna do is listen to tp3.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 00:57 (twenty years ago)

at the end of the BET presentation of Trapped 1-5, they had a clip of him in the studio singing one of the future chapters over the credits! it was hard to make out what was going on out of context but it sounded like he found someone in the shower and had them at gunpoint. I think there was a "freeze, motherfucker" somewhere in there.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 01:37 (twenty years ago)

I just watched the DVD and we only got Kelly yelling 'DVD Remix' at the end! Unfair.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

and hold on to that original pt. 4 mp3 people! Note that "this is some BULLSHIT" is replaced with "he flicked his CIGARETTE" now!

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 02:59 (twenty years ago)

Oh, and I hate that he changed the speed from 70 to 55. It was funny to me that he stuck it to The Man by driving five miles an hour over the speed limit.

Anyone have any idea why he left the "boops" in part V on the explicit version of the actual album or why he didn't use them through the whole song or in any of the other four parts?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 03:11 (twenty years ago)

Because Kells is out his goddamn mind?

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:15 (twenty years ago)

And thank the lord for that.

Did anyone else find it humorous that the first group of people he thanks in the liner notes after God and his fans are his trainers?

Jeff Reguilon (Talent Explosion), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 04:37 (twenty years ago)

Because the boops are _amazing_.

My new favorite name ever is "Fearless" Fernando Fernandez.

And I also love the Nivea track.

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

according to the credits of the movie, R. Kelly is playing 'Sylvester.'

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

The sirens woo-woo's are even better when accompanied by film. God, I need to watch it again

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:22 (twenty years ago)

"Sylvester", coming out of the closet.

I love the video insofar as it posits a world where EVERYTHING is spoken with the voice of R. Kelly; thus one-upping the J-Lo fantasy of a club where J-Lo listens to J-Lo spinning J-Lo at J-Lo's club (WE ARE ALL J-LO/Soylent Green is people/etc). I only wish he visited a farm in part five; the idea of an Old McDonald world as voiced by Kells is about 99% more chilling than Animal Farm and 150% more bacon-y!

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

have you noticed the painting in the back of the room in part5, when they're arguing ? now, that's what i call "art" !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:32 (twenty years ago)

I wonder how much it would cost to commission one of those.

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

http://www.720records.com/dispatchSite.cfm?section=shop&page=detail&category=&SKU=16239

Of note: the "Playas Only"/"Sex in the Kitchen (Remix)" 12" (apparently an official release) is OUTSTANDING. No idea how hard it is to find, but I picked one up today at Newbury Comics, of all places.

As for the DVD, the incredibly poor-quality bluescreen during the driving scenes kills me every time. For some reason, before I saw the video, I pictured the cop/wife scenes occurring in the middle of the night, even though the storyline made it clear that it took place during the next morning.

R. Kelly as "Sylvester" is another point of interest, since in my mind I figured the protagonist of the story to be R. Kelly himself, or at least an R. Kelly analogue; is it possible that the character he plays is someone other than the music weatherman? What kind of lifestyle would necessitate him carrying a large gun around everywhere? And in what notional world is it morally excusable for people to stumble home to their wives the next morning without any explanation - Sylvester's wife didn't give him any shit about it, but neither did Mary seem to think there was anything weird about Rufus (a pastor, mind) coming home after being out all night.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Thursday, 7 July 2005 05:53 (twenty years ago)

I've seen the CD single of that but I'm not sure I really need it

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Thursday, 7 July 2005 06:37 (twenty years ago)

"GO GET MY GODDAM CD SINGLE, MAN !"

AleXTC (AleXTC), Thursday, 7 July 2005 10:36 (twenty years ago)

wow that part 6 climax snippet sounds so dope - violent confrontation! plot switches! ridiculous rhymes! that's the best thing, you're killin' me!

yeah it is pretty sick!

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Is the background in "Pt.4" a bluescreen or reverse projection? It looks so weird, like Edward G. Robinson should be in the car or something.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Friday, 8 July 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Fav. lyric from the new album: "On this night, girl I vow, to make you cry when I go down".

OTM

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 July 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

I assumed Rufus was away on a "trip" (obv. really with Chuck), judging by his "honey I've been missing you."

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, me too. I think he also comes home with some kind of suitcase.

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

And we know why Sylvester's wife wasn't especially surprised about why he stayed out all night...

Candicissima (candicissima), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:14 (twenty years ago)

It all makes sense now...

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:19 (twenty years ago)

Plus he changed "this is some BULLSHIT" to "he flicks his CIGARETTE" obv. giving the observant a bit of foreshadowing when he announces "plus I SMELL CIGARETTES!" So for that minute on pt. 5 some guy can go "omg...I bet its the policeman." Kells is always one step ahead.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 July 2005 13:21 (twenty years ago)

Bother, spare me the details

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 July 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

What is R. Kelly's girlfriend/wife say at the end??? I couldn't understand anything excetp something about the cop.

Aja (aja), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Aja,

I'm a little shaken up by my whole Trapped in the Closet experience. I'll listen to it again when I'm more stable..........

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:31 (twenty years ago)

Dude, that shit if fucked up!!!!!!

Aja (aja), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:39 (twenty years ago)

the lyrics to Chapter 5 (and all the other chapters) are in this thread, Aja: R. Kelly - "Trapped In The Closet"

after a couple listens, most of the tracks on the album that I hadn't heard already aren't really doing anything for me. a few might be growers, and I like the reggaeton track, but "Slow Wind" and the one w/ Elephant Man suck.

Al (sitcom), Friday, 8 July 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

does anyone have a YSI for the entire video?

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:05 (twenty years ago)

The only tracks that I'm ready to dismiss entirely are "Your Girlfriend" and maybe "Sex (Love Is What We're Making)." "Slow Wind" is arguably embarassing/offensive but his enthusiasm gets me through it.

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 July 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

miccio (miccio), Friday, 8 July 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

"Kickin It w Your Girlfriend" is my favorite on this album

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Friday, 8 July 2005 22:34 (twenty years ago)

Calling it an "Usher rip" does nothing to explain what could be bad about it!

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Friday, 8 July 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

The reggaeton track is pretty bad, I mean, if you like reggaeton. I think the Elephant Man track is ok (I love R. Kelly dancehall), but shit, Elephant Man? They could give another Jamaican some work now and then. I laughed out loud at the title "Put My Shirt On." And at "Happy summertime, niggas!" Overall, I'm not feeling this as much as Happy People.

Gavin, Friday, 8 July 2005 23:18 (twenty years ago)

there isn't a single room in r's house where you are safe from sex!!

jones (actual), Sunday, 10 July 2005 16:17 (twenty years ago)

Miccio: "Kickin' it with your girlfriend" was a fave initially, 'cause I thought Kells was talking to one of his boys, saying "Hey, I'm sorry, I'm kickin' it with your girlfriend. Dude, I fucked up" a'la 'Jessie's Girl' NOT him talking to his own girl.
Relisten with the initial view in mind and see if the song doesn't improve. The idea of Kells writing a love song apologizing about sneaking around behind one of his boy's back with dude's girlfriend is supercool; the trad. Usher stylee somewhat less so.
In any case, I like this anyway. The Nivea song is fuckin' amazing tho'.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 July 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

That 'initial concept' does sound more interesting but the lyrics are pretty specific in that he's talking to his own girl. I'd have to hit myself on the head with a brick or something not to notice it. the music is pretty dang similar to "confessions, pt.2" as well so basically the track, while professional, just makes me wish I was listening to Usher. Nothing else on the album does that.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:14 (twenty years ago)

All would have been forgiven if he'd pusher the Usher scenario into more ludicrous, inventive directions - KELLIFIED the deal, but instead he just goes through the motions, albeit competently.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:18 (twenty years ago)

the lyrics are pretty specific in that he's talking to his own girl. I'd have to hit myself on the head with a brick or something not to notice it.

I've been kickin it with your girlfriend
Oh what am I gonna do?
Cause God knows that I really didn't mean to hurt you
I know it's bogus, but I felt that you should know the truth
I fell in love with her the moment that we were introduced
And I just feel that it's time for this little secret to end
I've been kickin it with your girlfriend

[VERSE 1]
Go ahead and slap me again, cause I can understand how you feel
When a man takes you for granted and he don't keep it real
I should've been a man and told you a long time ago
Instead of stunnin I should have broke it down and let you know
My fault for that, don't know what's on my mind
And I blame myself for wastin your time
Believe, I really did try to keep that girl away from me
But her body language kept on tempin and teasin me
And plus she knew what she was doin when she did it anyway
I knew what she was doin too and that made it okay
Truth is that we don't even regret it
Up out the closet I will be the first to say it

Now I apologize for me and her and everything that went down
These are the reasons why some girls don't bring they friends around
I just didn't know how to tell you that I was feelin her
And how we get away sometimes and make love
I never wanted to mislead you
At first I just wanted to please you
I know it's hard for you to be able to trust again
Because I came between you and your best friend
I did not ask for this
It just happened outta no where since the day we kissed
And the truth is that we don't even regret it
Up out the closet, I will be the first to say it

I'm sorry again
Never meant to hurt you
I'm sorry again
But girl I love her
I'm sorry again
I never meant to make you cry, no
The first one out the closet

Hm. I dunno mang; except for the "girl", this could easily be him talking to a friend in a heartfelt moment. A little imagination, Anthony!

And as long as we're talking about derivative tracks, "Hit it Til the Morning" is pretty uninteresting AND it lifts 'Ignition's hook wholesale.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Things I would never say to a male friend, even if I slept with his girlfriend:
1. 'Go ahead and slap me again, cause I can understand how you feel
When a man takes you for granted and he don't keep it real'
2. 'Now I apologize for me and her and everything that went down
These are the reasons why some girls don't bring they friends around'
3. 'I never wanted to mislead you
At first I just wanted to please you'
4. 'I never meant to make you cry, no
The first one out the closet'

"Hit It Til The Morning" isn't one of the best but Twista makes it wortwhile for me.

miccio (miccio), Sunday, 10 July 2005 17:33 (twenty years ago)

Micc, we're talking about a man who just released a five part opera called "Trapped In the Closet". I think he's sufficiently in touch with his feminine side to tell his pal that he never meant to make him cry.
GET ONE HORMONE SHOT.
I'm gonna drop that Ying/Maroon track you sent on Monday. Do you want to add a bit more commentary; what you sent was very brief.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Now I apologize for me and her and everything that went down
These are the reasons why some girls don't bring they friends around

doesn't that line settle this disagreement?

cutty (mcutt), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:17 (twenty years ago)

Not exactly, "the reasons why some girls don't bring they friends around" could be the same reasons why some guys don't bring THEY friends around.
Look, work with me here.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 July 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I was reading the same was Forksclove was. I really should've listened more closely.

Things I would never say to a male friend, even if I slept with his girlfriend

This is so not a reasonable argument re: R. Kelly, though.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 10 July 2005 22:17 (twenty years ago)

Hah - I also thought he was talking to one of his guys the first couple of times I listened to it. What gives it away is that IIRC he says "Baby, I've been kickin it with yr girlfriend".

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Monday, 11 July 2005 06:48 (twenty years ago)

well it's always been obvious to me that he was talking to his girlfriend about his fooling around with her girlfriend.
might have been nice if he'd been kicking it with his bisexual/lesbian girlfriend' girlfriend ! (scenario a la "trapped in the closet"...)

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 11 July 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I imagined it as being addressd both to his current gf and to his male pal, the friend of both being the one he was kickin' it with.

I'm grateful for proof that people who really dig "Kickin' It" are totally delusional. Lots of imagining going on!

(I kid because I care)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

as for the usher rip off thing, i really disagree cos we seem to forget that when burn, confession, yeah, etc were released, it was obvious that HE ripped the R off !
so yeah, it sounds a bit like usher..but that's because usher sounds like Kels !

AleXTC (AleXTC), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:48 (twenty years ago)

For me, 'Playas Only' is the real Usher rip on TP3

Baaderonixx le Belge (Fabfunk), Monday, 11 July 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

"Playas Only" does sound like Usher, hadn't realized that. Probably cuz its such a blatant Scott Storch track. Also probably cuz it doesn't have the same exact lyrical, thematic and musical qualities as a specific Usher single.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 11 July 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't R. get props for bringing back that older use of "girlfriend," in that you think from the title that the song's going one way but then it goes another?

Hillary Brown (Hillary Brown), Monday, 11 July 2005 15:45 (twenty years ago)

so is TP3 selling well so far ? did happy people sell well ? from here (france), Kels is a commercial midget !
