ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

He's now in Supergrass?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

no, Beasties

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ugh!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that what the new album sounds like?

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Hell No! It's a huge soul stomper. A couple songs have a straight up Otis-style to them. Other have a newer R&B slant to them but it's all fuckin fantastic!

Particle Ranger (particle ranger), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

he looks like a cross between john darnielle and jim j. bullock.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i was surprised that the album maneuvered betw. old-school otis redding stuff and new, glitchy sounds!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

oh wow!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Still not sold on the idea

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i find myself staring at that picture more than i should.

rizzx (rizzx), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought this was about Townsell

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

adam don't do it!

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i won't

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm not really sold on the idea, either! it's interesting, tho.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

uh oh

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I like that he shade-tips.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

by dislike is obvs out of all proportion.

xp

i double spec too. i dont have prescription sunglasses.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i have a feeling this person would annoy the shit out of me. but i'm warming to the music a bit.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have that one album on Warp that's all dark, black and white, and it's hit or miss, but the hits are really good.

So, Lidell has gone Ninja Tune, essentially?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

no.

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

ah.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

otis + warp stomp stylee = Staxglitch?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Jed, do you like Jimi Tenor?

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The glitch element is sooooo small.

It's like Cee-Lo Green minus Neptunes plus Mouse On Mars.

And dope as hell

Whiney G. Weingarten (whineyg), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

So this is not about Lidell "I Got a Big D*ck" Townsell...

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

dope as hell, soul stomper, Otis-style, R&B slant

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

What I've heard of the new stuff = not convinced at ALL.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

dope as Otis, soul slant, stomper style, R&B hell

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

less stomp, more pomp.

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

soulpomp

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

is Ian Svenenvnenvous in this band?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

New Jamie Lidell album in June

Jena (JenaP), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

is that the dude from jethro tull? xpost

tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard this album is better than cex!

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i heard thrilled stories of live shows that were strangulated otis + sickgabbanoize and i get terrence trent id'marby

strng hlkngtn, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

also a link to the unedited interview...

http://www.thewire.co.uk/web/writing.php

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, i love Jimi.

i can only assume those that are making Otis comparisons havenlt actually heard any Otis.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:20 (twenty-one years ago)

but i'll take strangulated otis, yes.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:27 (twenty-one years ago)

adam, i love Jimi.

Oh, then this throws my whole theory out the window. I guess I better listen to the thing and make up my own opinions.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

(In that I love JT and was thinking maybe you didn't like "that sort of thing")

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

id prefer j lidell singing with jimi tenor, with jimi making sure to provide all the music

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

do you like lidell, ambrose?

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY IS THE WIRE DOING A STORY ON NU-JAMIROQUAI?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

This jackass obviously sings to his reflection in the bathroom mirror.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

bez doing an album for warp for be the fucking greatest

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

er.....i was really down on him, but. i dont know, i liek the idea of him more than the music. i dont really like the live shows, and i only like that "when i come back around" tune. i think that is really good, if its a pastiche of something or other, it is really well done.

but if i had to choose between jimi and jamie....oh gosh

jimi tenor is still the king, generally.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

yes

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

seriously, if jamiroquai put this fucking album out you guys wouldn't bat an eyelash.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, loads of things I like sound like Jamiroquai. I've just never been tempted to buy one of his albums.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:45 (twenty-one years ago)

The fact that he did an "impromptu scat set" at Sonar, or would even consider such a thing, is TERRIFYING though!

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Andy Kellman's review on allmusic was OTM with the comparison to Shawn Smith of the grossly underrated Pigeonhed.. although Shawn Smith would never do an impromptu skat, nor would he ever be invited to be reviewed on THE WIRE, much less be put on the cover of the magazine.

Um, I sorta dig Maudlin Gear. Too bad it seems this new one isn't like it.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You hate Lidell, you hate fun. Further, you hate life. And you got no soul.

trollerhonix, Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

You hate Jamiroquai, you hate fun. Further, you hate life. And you got no soul. And you can't dance for shit.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 21:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Jamiroquai also has better cars.

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

better hats, too.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't really see how any comparison between jimi tenor and jamie lidell is valid.

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:09 (twenty-one years ago)

adam's not heard Lidell and was just wondering "if it was that sort of thing".

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

i think.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah jimi is a jazz musician. lidell seems to be a soul sort of guy, i think thats why i didnt really like his klive show, cos the dancy bits (ie the relief from all the grinding and glitching) were that sort of weird shuffle thing redolent of soul, which doesnt really do it for me.

ambrose (ambrose), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:14 (twenty-one years ago)

it was watching the domino interview/performance video on the site linked upthread that put me off Lidell for life. it's fucking brutal.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, i see. x post

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so so so glad my suspicions are not mine alone

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

oh why couldn't sonar 2005 have happened *before* the minstrelie theme of EMP Pop conf 2005?

donut e- (donut), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Why no direct comparisons to Mocky yet? Or even some references to Gonzalez, Peaches, Feist, etc.? Allmusic is telling me that Mocky was involved with at least five songs on Lidell's album, that guy gets around..

mike h. (mike h.), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:34 (twenty-one years ago)

what does feist have to do with this?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 30 June 2005 22:40 (twenty-one years ago)

she useta be Bitch LapLap

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 30 June 2005 23:28 (twenty-one years ago)

:-O

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Thursday, 30 June 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

mocky was instrumental (ha ha) to this record, gonzales was also involved, and herbert did a lot of coaching behind the scenes. multiply sounds nothing like jamiroquai, although its one duff track ("a little bit more") definitely has overtones of jimi tenor.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:00 (twenty years ago)

also, i am fucking shocked that he's on the cover of wire. lidell told me at sonar that warp compromised him creatively on this record (he originally wanted it to be a double), so it's a bit mystifying to see their hype machine going into overdrive for it. that said, i think it's probably the most accessible album they've ever released.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

multiply sounds nothing like jamiroquai

you crazy.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

and adam, to be fair, the scat set at sonar was only impromptu because of major technical issues..

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:05 (twenty years ago)

cutty there's NO disco in this record!!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:06 (twenty years ago)

adam's not heard Lidell and was just wondering "if it was that sort of thing".

Yes, Jed is right. I only know super-collider and someone mentioned Jimi somewhere...

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Friday, 1 July 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

and adam, to be fair, the scat set at sonar was only impromptu because of major technical issues..

OK. I guess I should...actually listen to the record!

:)

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Friday, 1 July 2005 00:11 (twenty years ago)

i think you will probably hate it.

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:13 (twenty years ago)

I like singing!

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Friday, 1 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I don't mind Jamiroquai and one of my favorite songs is by lenny kravitz!

you need to hear Adam Levine moan ohhhh, the life of a stripper... (nordicskilla, Friday, 1 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i still think you will hate it. but i hope not!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:15 (twenty years ago)

i think adam will love it.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:24 (twenty years ago)

adam he is insulting you!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:28 (twenty years ago)

I don't know what to say anymore!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

ADAM WHO DO YOU TRUST

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah, me or the LAWYER

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

I would trust Cutty but he likes Oasis.
I would probably trust Mark but I've always suspected he kind of likes backpacker hip-hop!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:33 (twenty years ago)

i saw the stones throw tour last night and i'm listening to common right now! shit!

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

:\

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:34 (twenty years ago)

adam you would've liked it! they played some juan atkins

mark p (Mark P), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:35 (twenty years ago)

oh!

Baby BobO (nordicskilla), Friday, 1 July 2005 00:37 (twenty years ago)

Jamie Lidell looks almost exactly like this guy that starred on a short lived Canadian show on CBC called Kenny Vs. Spenny. He looked like the latter of the two. Uncanny.

Can't stand Jamie Lidell's stuff though. Super_Collider though I'm not sure, I actually only started listening to them yesterday. But I'm a Vogel fan, so I'll see.

Tokyo Ghost Stories (Tokyo Ghost Stories), Friday, 1 July 2005 02:47 (twenty years ago)

they had a show?!?! damn, i missed it. i do however remember their great documentary Pitch.

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 1 July 2005 04:26 (twenty years ago)

I thought Middlin Gear was crap. sold it back. No interest in this one. Still do love the Mosquito 12 I have though.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 1 July 2005 04:48 (twenty years ago)

seriously, if jamiroquai put this fucking album out you guys wouldn't bat an eyelash.

seriously, jamiroquai can never put out an album like this. you go listen to his latest and multiply after eachother. then come back crawling and tell me i'm right

Joris (rizzx), Friday, 1 July 2005 04:49 (twenty years ago)

Jamie looks nothing like Bez.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

I liked super collider. I cant make an opinion about multiply but I did like muddlin gear for the most part.

should I feel guilty for liking jamiroquai? haha

vanessa novaeris (novaeris), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

always think of lidell as yuppy club wine music, expect to see him playing here in a club without a dancefloor for 50 euro a ticket anytime soon.

perhaps I'm wrong, but can't get over that really. album doesn't grab me on first few listens.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 18:41 (twenty years ago)

Jamie looks nothing like Bez.

Of course.

I just thought the specs-and-shades vs. half-specs-half-shades thing, and the open mouth expression was uncanny (not to mention that the height of both pics are EXACTLY THE SAME! *creepy overture*)

donut e- (donut), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:26 (twenty years ago)

But Warp should give Bez an album deal.

donut e- (donut), Tuesday, 5 July 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

So a couple of weeks ago my local record store dude shows me this James Lidell album and asks if I wanna take it home and check it out. I say "no thanks" cuz I 'm thinking its the guy from mowax. So, I'm in the store today and he's playing James Lidell and I go whatdyawhodawhattha. Me loves super_collider and likes this way good!

....ferreal!

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:30 (twenty years ago)

My wife said that I shouldn't have told her that what she was listening to was made by the guy on the Wire cover.

peepee (peepee), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:36 (twenty years ago)

Heard "When I Come Back Around" on Zane Lowe earlier (ok, ok, a brief moment of musical desperation/laziness to avoid finding a CD to wash up with).

For a few long moments I really did think it was Robbie Williams 'rapping' (and I had the wrong frequency on the dial) until it clicked who it probably was. Not a great first impression :/

fandango (fandango), Wednesday, 6 July 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

Kinda sorta Terence Trent d'Arby-y, no?

MV, Thursday, 7 July 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

i'll give this some time and attention but my embarrassment meter is redlining HARD the first time thru

g e o f f (gcannon), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

embarrassment meter

keep looking over your shoulder to make sure no one thinks you are listening to jamiroquai!

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

embarrassment FOR not about dude

g e o f f (gcannon), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

what's embarrassing about this, geoff?

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

the unshakeable soul fantasy-camp vibe. thru glitch power i will live within Fa Fa Fa Fa Fa (Sad Song) forever.

nb. i'm totally unfamiliar will supercollider or his ealier record. and i don't really like herbert either, let'sallmakemistakes excepted. and i sort of like "a little bit more" so who knows where we are, you and me, mark p!

g e o f f (gcannon), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:33 (twenty years ago)

"a little bit more" is my least favorite track on the album!

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

i feel i am alone on this one.

mark p (Mark P), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

nope, that song is retarded.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

cutty, you really hate this record! :)

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

no, i wouldn't read this thread if i wasn't at least mildly interested in it. i just like invoking jamiroquai.

i enjoy half the songs. i enjoy the creedence song the most.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:42 (twenty years ago)

MV's mention of terrence trent d'arby also made my day.

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

i settled pretty much exactly where geoff is. a little bit more might be a retarded track, but he makes it his own atleast.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

somebody ysi something good!! i like mocky & i like the mocky song w/lidell but i haven't heard any of this solo stuff

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

at least it sort of kicks. the rest of the record is reading like just very capable demonstrations to me, a pop idol tryout or something.

xpost creedence? where?

g e o f f (gcannon), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

here:

New Jamie Lidell album in June

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:51 (twenty years ago)

no, i wouldn't read this thread if i wasn't at least mildly interested in it.

you're a better man than me.

jed_ (jed), Thursday, 7 July 2005 19:58 (twenty years ago)

somebody ysi something good!! i like mocky & i like the mocky song w/lidell but i haven't heard any of this solo stuff

Here's a YSI (hopefully I did it right) of "The City," my favorite track:

http://s42.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=27ESZVJRRMZM60J59ZFM6R1L36

Telephonething (Telephonething), Friday, 8 July 2005 01:17 (twenty years ago)

caveat: "the city" is pretty different from the rest of the album.

there are twelve people in the world the rest are haitch (haitch), Friday, 8 July 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

I was listening to 'the city' on my walkman last night while caught in the bomb scare in Edinburgh city centre. It only succeeded in making me more jumpy than i already was so i switched it off. I'm still loving the album though. Newme is my current favourite with the mad afrobeat percussion and horns.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 8 July 2005 07:45 (twenty years ago)

this album is kind of faking the funk. i got it today. its ok. my mom will like it. i wish it all sounded like song 3.

huell howser (chaki), Friday, 8 July 2005 21:39 (twenty years ago)

eight months pass...
It's no G. Love and Special Sauce. I waited six months to say that.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 05:01 (twenty years ago)

maybe thats the problem, amirite?

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:06 (twenty years ago)

I saw Reggie Watts live last weekend. He absolutely pummels any Lidell to the ground with a flick of his finger, btw.

Yoo Doo Nut (donut), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:13 (twenty years ago)

I saw that scat set at Sonar. It was painful.

jimnaseum (jimnaseum), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 10:32 (twenty years ago)

It's no G. Love and Special Sauce. I waited six months to say that.

Tracer I kiss you!

Andy_K (Andy_K), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 11:55 (twenty years ago)

i thought i had totally done a 180 on him when i kept hearing snippets of what i thought was the new Jamie Lidell single on the radio and LOVING IT... but i discovered it was the Gnarls Barkley single "Crazy".

Nevertheless, i am coming round to JL a bit.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 12:47 (twenty years ago)

Gnarls Barkley are how JL would sound if he was as talented as he thinks he is.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 12:48 (twenty years ago)

admit it you mean as (black) as he thinks he is

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 14:15 (twenty years ago)

the album could really benefit from more "room tone" or space around things, and/or the presence of another human being playing with him - one reason G. Love & Special Sauce were so great is that you could tell it was a collaborative jam, or it sounded just like one, anyway. this one is a little too much "jamie and his amps"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 15:58 (twenty years ago)

warp has just released a singles-bsides-outtakes-whatever comp of his

there's a freeform five remix there that's killing me

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 16:09 (twenty years ago)

admit it you mean as (black) as he thinks he is

Do we really have to go there? Can't we just enjoy the record for what it is?

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 16:26 (twenty years ago)

he's a cutie

youth problem (YouthProblem), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 16:53 (twenty years ago)

warp has just released a singles-bsides-outtakes-whatever comp of his

Not out yet, is it? I can't find any mention of it on Warp's site, discogs, amazon uk, etc... Can I beg you for a tracklist?

Telephonething (Telephonething), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 18:48 (twenty years ago)

no prob
