I just laugh. No regrets; as tylerw noted, he's a good reminder about how your musical heroes should not necessarily be any other kind of hero.

You know, I will admit that the first three songs released from his Teargarden by Kaliedyscope project have been better than expected and better than anything else since the "reunion" began. Thank god he's giving the tunes away for free though, since they still don't exactly measure up to his peak.

Major major LOL, however, @ him asking fans to pay $30 for the first physical EP. $30 for five song and a miniature stone fucking obelisk. What a dork. It was very entertaining to read a thread on the Pumpkins forum about how honored all the fans should be for ONLY having to pay such a paltry sum. I guess there are still plenty of fans drinking his kool-aid.

yeah, that's a nice one, ned! quite the time capsule -- the Whiskey in 91! I didn't make it to the Sunset Strip til I was a bit older, but I would've loved to have seen that show. Quite the time capsule!

Like I muttered in my piece, he's got a VERY dry sense of humor -- or had. Think that's gone now, though.

I should say that I did see him not that long ago at the Sky Saxon tribute show at the Echoplex in LA, a comfortable club show in essence -- he played with a couple of ad hoc bands and participated in the big jam at the end, and he wasn't being a crazed ranter or anything of the sort; if anything it was the most relaxed performance I'd seen from him in years. I have a theory that if he's doing something where he's not the headliner or center of attention he enjoys himself a hell of a lot more, but I don't think he's figured that out yet!

Yeah, I think his sense of humor is completely gone at this point. When the "reunion" happened he put together a revamped Pumpkins official site that was all about networking with the fans, it was sort of a combination between Facebook and your typical band site. I thought it was actually well done and really gave a voice to the fans. But once the fans started voicing criticism of him, he threw a fit and took it all down. Now the official website is one badly designed page with a bunch of links and the fan forum has been completely disassociated with it.

Ned, I read some really good reviews of that tribute and like what I've seen via YouTube clips. I think I get most frustrated when I catch glimpses of his brilliance and talent and wonder why he can't tap into that more often.

Billy Corgan is a douchebag but his doucheyness is really like an unfortunate symptom of what made him so great back in the '90s. His entire career he's seemed like a guy who's always in his own head (it comes off more often than not to fans and detractors alike as self-absorption) who has been progressively drifting further off this planet into his own weird fantasy world. I love early Pumpkins (obv) & hate everything billy has done post-Adore except for his strangely genius one-off solo album.

If Corgan weren't so lame, he could have had a great second act as an alt-rock goofball gadfly a la Dave Grohl, who seems to know how to have fun. Corgan, on the other hand ... I once saw him do a poetry reading while lounging on a pillow in the corner of a room in the Art Institute, wearing an army helmet with lightbulbs affixed. No shit. Was it hilarious? Yes. Was it funny on purpose? To this day I have no idea. I happened to be sitting with a friend who briefly played in the (pre-breakup) Pumpkins, and he was just as perplexed. Either that or he didn't want to say anything bad about a potential future paycheck.

I definitely think people tend to undervalue Machina, but at the MOST its like their fourth best album. No chance of it ever rating any higher than that. U MAD.

In the 2008 documentary If All Goes Wrong, when talking about "Mayonaise" Corgan attributes to Iha "the chord structures, essentially, but it's really only two parts" and says Iha "gets a lot of credit" for writing a "fantastic" song "because his name is on the credit but I wrote the song."

That whole raft of material that Corgan released in 2000-01 (counting the Internet leaks et al) was a hell of a way to bow out, really. Or should have been.

'Machina' is the worst album I've ever owned, and 'Adore' ain't far behind. An almost unfathomable fall from 93-94 to 96-97 to 98-99. Can't imagine how awful the guy must be at this point.

Corgan always seemed to me like the James Cameron of 90's alt-rock

i.e. maker of over-the-top, largher-than-life entertainments, really talented in a lot of ways, but also posessing a lot of annoying quirks and deficiencies with an obnoxious "this is MY sandbox" bully complex to boot.
