mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:50 (twenty years ago)

"can we list things that get talked about a lot but aren't necessarily any fucking good?"

see the Britney Spears at number 82. When I first started lurking here 4 years ago this was the song to which the anti-rockist pop FUN crusaders attached their colours (I think it even won an early poll of best songs ever?)

I think it's rubbish. I wonder if the people who were keen then still like it so much now.

bidford__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

This is a stupid list, bar a few suggestions, I'm sorry - no Arctic Monkeys, wtf?!! ;-)

Okay, here's my suggestions:

My Bloody Valentine - Soon
Dizzee Rascal - I Luv U
Daft Punk - One More Time
Belle And Sebastian - Sleep The Clock Around
Animal Collective - Grass
St Etienne - Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Outkast - Hey Ya
Boredoms - Super Are
Devendra Banhart - Little Boys

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:58 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if the people who were keen then still like it so much now.

loved it then, love it now.

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 10:59 (twenty years ago)

But for a supposed best song ever it's very rarely mentioned now.

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:04 (twenty years ago)

the big bang was one of the greatest things ever but a lot has happened since! imagine how boring life would be if we all just sat around saying "boy, that bang sure was big!"

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:06 (twenty years ago)

anyway it's rockist not to acknowledge the present.

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:07 (twenty years ago)

It just seemed such a flimsy and mediocre song to pin a whole pop philosophy on.

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:11 (twenty years ago)

it's those chord/color changes from the turnaround into the chorus. intense gloominess becoming intense drivenness.

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:16 (twenty years ago)

why flimsy and mediocre? i do think it's over-rated myself but as a pop single it's got almost all of the boxes ticked. (xpost)

i mean it was written by Swedes and they are the kings of popcraft, generally speaking.

the real scandal is not one mash-up is now cherished enough by ILM to make such a silly list. Britney has evidently outlasted those that would seek to juxtapose her sweeeeeet can (perhaps with The Sweet, or Can).

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:23 (twenty years ago)

Aaliyah - We Need A Resolution
Snoop Dogg - Drop It Like It's Hot
Billie Holiday (and most other versions really) - Gloomy Sunday
My Chemical Romance - Helena
Basement Jaxx - Where's Your Head At?
Michael Mayer/Mattias Aguayo - Slow
Scritti Politti - Jacques Derrida
Scritti Politti - Skank Bloc Bologna

Roz (Roz), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

xpost

Unfortunately all I can remember of the song is the chorus and the ridiculous version as sung by Darius on Pop Idol at that. I think the fact that the rest of it is so unmemorable counts against it being a great pop single.

As for ticking all the boxes yes I think it did; We don't like guitars - we want a producer twiddling knobs behind the scenes, we don't like the illusion of depth we like surface and image, we don't like men, we like a woman. All of which are admirable approaches as a balance to the prevailing ways of looking at pop, but the song ILM ended up pegging all these things to was just so bleh.

If it had been Whigfield's 'Saturday night' for instance, now that would have been worthy.

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:34 (twenty years ago)

you're not doing a good job of explaining why the song is a bad choice really - i don't think i could either though really. i certainly don't see why it is worse than 'Saturday Night'.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

so is mullygrubbr satisfied with this list??

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

Face it, Bidfurd. You hate Pop.

Don King of the Mountain (noodle vague), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 11:57 (twenty years ago)

I think if a song doesn't have its own thread on ILM -- or at the very least, its singer doesn't -- it cannot be on this list.

Or possibly I am being harsh.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

This would have been an interesting thread had it not been ruined by the kind of troll whose natural home really is Dissensus, where they can go and talk about grime with other 35-year-old Wire contributors.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:05 (twenty years ago)

Marcello are you talking about me?
look at all the songs I posted. All of which I like (excepting Britney).

I don't like Grime, only read The Wire in WHsmiths and I'm 36 damn you.

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:15 (twenty years ago)

well this place is only for people in their late 20s or early 40s, capichay?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:17 (twenty years ago)

I was trying to come up with suggestions that didn't make me feel like I was obliquely talking about myself; i'm finding it difficult.

Marcello you've been great of late! Sorry for our arguments a while back.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Steely Dan, "Doctor Wu"
Schneider TM, "The Light 3000"
Amerie, "1 Thing"

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:21 (twenty years ago)

the problem is there's no point listing tracks that were massive hits, and no point listing tracks you think are great but have never been talked about much on ILM.

so how many tracks on this thread are left after that?

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:26 (twenty years ago)

Why is there no point listing tracks that were massive hits. Are you an ANTI-POPIST?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:27 (twenty years ago)

63. Disco Inferno - Summer's Last Sound

The rest of Disco Inferno hasn't really grabbed me the way this song did but I can say in all honesty that the first time I heard this song I felt like I was being swept away to Heaven.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:36 (twenty years ago)

But then they turned you away at the door 'cos your name wasn't down.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:38 (twenty years ago)

Why is there no point listing tracks that were massive hits. Are you an ANTI-POPIST?

no it just seems pointless because mullygrubber and the rest of the world shouldn't need ILM to mention tracks that are popular on ILM but were also huge hits all over the world and heard everywhere. of course this was not the case with 'Hey Ya' so i thought it would be a good example, cough...

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

The Saint Etienne track should be "He's on the Phone", surely?

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

THE CANON MUST BE BUILT

(graphics-friendly ilxors plz insert pix of tony wilson/inspector blakey at this point kthnxbye)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

My reasons for posting these in brackets :

46. Monsoon - Ever So Lonely 12" (always lots of love for 80's 12" mixes and there was a lively discussion about later Monsoon albums at one point)

47. New Order - Everything's Gone Green 12" (best 12" ever? - a whole thread debated this. An ILX primer needs a New Order track)

48. Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
49. Derrick Laro and Trinity - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough (The reggae/disco crossover was all the rage on ILX 2 or 3 years ago. Don't Stop seems like the best examples, and Uptown is a sort of prototype for this. Also I noticed that no Jamaican music was in the list so far.

50. The Flirtations - Nothing But A Heartache (Not enough soul up to that point. Also this is so great that I want everyone to hear it. Maybe everyone has, but still....)

51. The Raspberries - I Can Hardly Believe That You're Mine (The regular powerpop/70's radio rock threads are so great that a prime example of this MUST be in an ILX primer as a pointer towards them).

52. X-Ray Spex - Identity (Either The Adverts or X-Ray Spex seem to be the ILX punk champions whenever we have a punk thread, so I wanted to include this).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:42 (twenty years ago)

I heared 47 at lunchtime, and had forgotten that Barney sings EXACTLY the same tune on Blue Monday...

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:44 (twenty years ago)

Also, I'd forgoten how much of a dog's breakfast "Procession" was.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

The New Order track should obviously be from Technique

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:49 (twenty years ago)

"Procession" is outstanding!!!! WTF.

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

The New Order track that most makes me think of ILM is "All the Way"

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

I forgot how differently UK and US people think about music. Plus, I realized how fast I would have hightailed it out of here three years ago (AND MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE) if these really were the iconic songs of ILM.

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

Oh I still love it for that reason!

But, it is, though.

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:52 (twenty years ago)

(in re: my comment above: by which I don't mean 'this is all crap,' far from it. more like 'where's the diversity / breadth / scope / depth of the musical discourse')

The Obligatory Sourpuss (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

The Streets track maybe Weak Become Heroes?

Roxymuzak, Mrs. Carbohydrate (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Dem 2 - Destiny (this track regularly thrown up as the paradigmatic example of 2-step in a lot of threads)

Destiny's Child - Bills, Bills, Bills (for fans and haters alike: the production, vocals and lyrics sum up the best/worst (depending on yr perspective) of millenial R&B which for a time was a divisive issue in the great pop wars of early ILM - yes, folks, there was an anti-R&B contingent even prior to nu-ILM!)

The Beta Band - Broke (indie's attempts to come to grips with modern pop, and a favourite of many high-profile posters)

The Sugababes - Freak Like Me (bootlegging goes overground)

Laurie Anderson - O Superman (the archetypal avant/pop collision)

The House Crew - Euphoria (Nino's Dream) (Gareth singlehandedly made this the ILX Rave Tune)

The Rapture - House of Jealous Lovers (disco-punk lands on ILM)

Madonna - Holiday ("did" "disco" "die"?)

L'Trimm - The Cars That Go Boom (Chuck Eddy Pt 1)

David Banner - Cadillacs on 22s (crunk gains critical acceptance)

Big & Rich - Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy (nu-country broadens its horizons; Chuck Eddy Pt 2)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

we had an argument the other night at a fap. who's banana nutrament?

first cousin to Mangosteen Nutrament if that helps

Banana Nutrament (ghostface), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

i've still never heard 'O Superman', foolishly

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

My Mind's Playing Tricks On Me - Geto Boys
No Hits - Black Mountain
Be Mine - Robyn

Right?

marc(drums) (marcdrums), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

That's the worst Scorpions hit!

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to throw in Braxe & Falke's 'Rubicon' now, the ILM buzz about it prompted Falke himself to post, and it's different enough from 'So Much Love To Give' to warrant inclusion (not that SMLTG should be the token French disco track or whatever)

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Kraftwerk - Anything (Loved by everyone across the board; ILM dance, hip hop and rock fans can all find something to like in them)
Joey Beltram - Energy flash (oft cited rave track)
Killing Joke - Love like blood(Not widely loved by ILM, but deeply loved by Alex in NYC)
Lloyd Cole - Rattlesnakes (Not widely loved by ILM, but deeply loved by the pinefox)
Subway Sect - Ambition (A punk song that's always come through any punk revisionism untarnished.(by not being punk))

Bidfurd__, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Definitely Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac should be there. And some Def Leppard, maybe "Photograph". Would I be over-optimistic in suggesting Yes' "Starship Trooper"? "Helena"? (I might just be selective in the threads I read.) "Hollaback Girl" or "What You Waiting For?"? "Sk8er Boi"?

Sundar (sundar), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Anal Cunt should be on there

Jonothong Williamsmang (ex machina), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:08 (twenty years ago)

Len - Steal My Sunshine (summer absolves all sins)

Fleetwood Mac - Hold Me (the ILM fave, it appears)

Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (Ned and Dan hate him, you know)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:09 (twenty years ago)

Lloyd Cole: 'Man on the Verge'

the pinefox, Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:10 (twenty years ago)

zebedee (zebedee), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Justin Hayward - Isn't life strange?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

Hmm. Should I go request things in the other YSI thread or here?

js (honestengine), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

other than Nu Shooz's "I Can't Wait," we're skipping whole genres here!

Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam - "I Wonder If I Take You Home"
Debbie Deb - "When I Hear Music" and "Look Out Weekend"
Shannon - "Let the Music Play"

ken taylrr has gone off the internet because of you (ken taylrr), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:35 (twenty years ago)

Justin Timberlake - Like I Love You (Ned and Dan hate him, you know)

If you picked "Senorita" there wouldn't be a problem!

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

Britney has evidently outlasted those that would seek to juxtapose her sweeeeeet can (perhaps with The Sweet, or Can).

My bold tag acts like the red pen of a teacher on your paper. Pointing out your mistakes with the hope that you will change them or at least realize your facts are wrong or at least OLD.

Cunga (Cunga), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 16:51 (twenty years ago)

Outkast "B.O.B."

nervous (cochere), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 19:03 (twenty years ago)

If there is to be an outkast track included I really think it should be 'SpottieOttieDopaliscious'.

Bn1 (Bn1), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

Nah, the funny people here go nuts over B.O.B...not really sure why. Oh that's right - "genre busting."

I will add:

Quarks: I walk (Superpitcher Schaffel mix)
Belle n Sebastian: Your cover's blown
R Kelly: Ignition remix (yeah, it pains me too)
Lil' John & Usher: Yeah (see above)
Laid Back: White horse

paulhw (paulhw), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 23:03 (twenty years ago)

The King of Flop Threads, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:36 (twenty years ago)

LCD Soundsystem: Losing My Edge
Justin Timberlake: Rock Your Body

lyra (lyra), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

Buckingham Nicks - Frozen Love

What made Mick fall for them.

Universal Robot Band - Barely Breaking Even

Greg Carmichael and Leroy Burgess early 80s disco masterpiece

Squeeze - Take Me I'm Yours

World's introduction to Mr. Tilbrook and wussboys. Massive synths here.

Confounded (Confounded), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 02:26 (twenty years ago)

i am slowly becoming happy with this list (esp where people have mentioned the debates spawned)

i wonder if i could work out our ILM champion (MR ILM or Ms ILM or whatever) based on points for 1) own the track (10 pts 2) heard the track (5pts) 3) heard of the track (2 pts) and the kicker 4) mentioned the track on ilm (20 pts)?

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 04:44 (twenty years ago)

Banana Nutrament is John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats, isn't he? Sounds like him, anyway.

Passerby, Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:39 (twenty years ago)

a thought

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 05:45 (twenty years ago)

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:13 (twenty years ago)

(i think i PWN a few of these)

100% WJE (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:14 (twenty years ago)

And the winner would be the most typical ILMer! Our mascot! Our poster child! Or possibly the most schizo.

brittle-lemon (brittle-lemon), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 07:27 (twenty years ago)

Was it too obvious?

Beyonce - "Crazy In Love"

LeRooLeRoo (Seb), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:26 (twenty years ago)

Cunga you worked hard to point out...whatever it is you were trying to point out there.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:28 (twenty years ago)

Nelly - "Hot in Herre"

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

daavid (daavid), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

Cunga you worked hard to point out...whatever it is you were trying to point out there.

She doesn't have a "sweet can" anymore.

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 5 October 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

whyte boots, "nightmare."

a good, though probably overrated, '60s girl-group classic, with shangri-las-style talking, essential for all girl group discussions.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 00:59 (twenty years ago)

this thread so far, btw, will leave the reader woefully underprepared for any ILM metal thread. i'm not the best person to fill in the key tracks. but someone should.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Thursday, 6 October 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

One must know 4'33", must one not ? It does exist in recorded form.

blunt (blunt), Thursday, 6 October 2005 02:15 (twenty years ago)

some asshat floated around a 4'33" mp3 a while back on the lesser P2Ps. opened it up in a wave editor and it was jsut a blank file. kinda misses the point.
