Well actually the Grammy's are just shite anyways. They mean nothing, skipping brilliant albums all the time. Such an obtuse statement is best left for arguments with your mom Johnny.

Stooge McGruff, Monday, 31 October 2005 03:36 (twenty years ago)

Electric Six - Senor Smoke
Louis XIV - The Best Little Secrets Are Kept

miccio (miccio), Monday, 31 October 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

Stooge, I don't give a damn about Grammys. But the fact the Green Day album WAS released in 2004 and WON Grammys from that year pretty much rule it out of 2005 consideration in any list. Wouldn't you agree?

Voodoo Child, Monday, 31 October 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I just checked out that Ladytron album for first time and it is no way in top three. It's listenable but very similar to other shite I've heard over the last two years or so. So my top 3 of '05!

1. Coldplay X Y (best Coldplay album ever)
2. Gorillaz Demon Days (Talking Heads talent involved-need say more?)
3. Beck Guero (another evolution of creative genius by ole Beck)

Couch Potato Killer, Monday, 31 October 2005 05:20 (twenty years ago)

I hear from people that I'd love Black Mountain and the new Constantines album too, so I suspect that at least one of the two will be on the list once I get around to listening to them.

El Popo, Monday, 31 October 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

(The Bette Midler/Peggy Lee is produced by Barry Manilow! Awesome. Not that I've heard it or anything.)

I don't know, three? I'm really leaning toward Congotronics as a number one. That could be because I just finally bought it a few weeks ago and the glow hasn't worn off. But for sure nothing else has made me that happy in a long while. The Amadou and Mariam album could go top three too. And maybe...Run the Road? Mas Flow 2? M.I.A.? I don't know.

splates (splates), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

some albums from this year that have made me happy (picking three is not my thing):

Van der Graaf Generator - Present
Not a 1st rate VdGG album, but in "Every Bloody Emperor" it had at least one track as good as anything they've ever written. And even when the songs feel slight, the band still rock like Jazz Vikings.

Antony & the Johnsons - I Am a Bird Now
Gorgeous voice, gorgeous songs.

Kanye West - Late Registration
Hooky as fuck. Makes me smile a lot.

Missy Elliot - The Cookbook
This might be her strongest album yet, but Missy sounds like she can keep putting out Avant-Pop classics forever.

Boards of Canada - The Campfire Headphase
Obviously. Prob'ly denser than the first 2 BoC albums, the fact that their sound mutates so slowly but so clearly is part of the appeal, for me.

Franz Ferdinand - You Could Have It So Much Better With
Half a simplified, stompified retooling of the debut, half delicate Pulpesque ennui-pop. Both halves full of great choons.

Paul Wall & Chamillionaire - Controversy Sells
Sly, cheeky and funky as anything. They seem incapable of making a record that doesn't make me grin and strut.

The Evens - The Evens
The first Ian Mackaye-affiliated record I'd describe as Sweet. The low keyness works wonderfully. More please.

Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
Like Michigan only more so. The first 2 thirds are genius: epic miserabilst serial pop. Shame it kind of meanders away rather than builds to a climax, but "Come on Feel the Illinoise!" is prob'ly my most played song this year.

R. Kelly - TP3.Reloaded
Yes he's mental. Yes he's repetitive. Yes "Sex Weed" is hilarious. This is why this album rules.

Quasimoto - The Further Adventures of Lord Quas
It's great. It doesn't do much he hasn't done before. It doesn't need to. I wish Quas had been all over the DangerDoom album.

Gonzales - Solo Piano
Chilly does Satie. A small but perfectly formed pleasure.

The Magic Numbers - The Magic Numbers
Woolly jumper pop for middle-aged couples. But really really good woolly jumper pop.

Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
Another of the year's imperfect albums: too many songs that go nowhere. But the killer stuff really kills, as per usual.

Amerie - Touch
She reminds me a lot of Aaliyah, but instead of self-contained mystery Amerie does huge left-right combo-throwing Soul where even the ballads sound more defiant than vulnerable. Practically perfect.

Daft Punk - Human After All
It still sounds like Homework playing thru Discovery sounds to me. This time next year HAA will get a lot more respect, I think.

Patchouli Clark (noodle vague), Monday, 31 October 2005 10:10 (twenty years ago)

1. Big Business - Head For The Shallow
2. Lightning Bolt - Hypermagic Mountain
3. Witchcraft - Firewood

Just downloaded M83 and Sigur Ros and am enjoying them so far.

2. Rachel Stevens, Come And Get It
3. New Order, Waiting For The Sirens' Call

Favorite album discovered this year: ABC, The Lexicon Of Love (I have no idea how I spent twenty-plus years without owning and constantly listening to this, but then again it took me until last year to catch up to Surf's Up)

Most anticipated: The Strokes, First Impressions of Earth

panoptican (panoptican), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

1. Gorillaz - Demon Days
When this first came out, I dismissed it, which made it all the more refreshing when I listened to it expecting little to nothing, and it's totally brilliant. It's dark, beautiful and just plain fun.

2. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
Nobody is talking about this album around here, and I can kind of understand why, because it's probably pretty uncool by the standards here, seeing as it's all proggy and whatnot. Though it seems like Ned Raggett should have at least heard it. Really beautiful album with a good amount of metal and art-pop.

3. Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
The first time I heard it I had a laundry list of complaints, and then when it was eating at my brain I listened to it again from beginning to end in one sitting outside of school. I can't see myself listening to this a lot in the future because it's so long and indulgent, but it really was an experience.

Other notables: Opeth, Clap Your Hands, M83, M.I.A.

O. Nate - I grabbed Mihaly Dresch's Quiet As It Is when I was in Budapest last year... We caught him live and I was blown right out of the water - my eyes glazed over, my heart burst, etc. Sadly, the record's much smoother and less free than what I saw live. What's Egyenes Zene like? I'd love to hear an album by them that lives up to the live experience (which was possibly the best jazz gig i've seen in my life).

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 08:11 (twenty years ago)

In no special order
Kelley Polar: Love Song of the Hanging Gardens
New Order : Wiating for the Sirens' Call
Royksopp : The Understanding

Arnault (arc73hk), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:41 (twenty years ago)

It's funny you should mention seeing him live (xpost) since I bought Egyenes Zene (literally "Straight Music") after a face-melting gig that I saw in Vienna when I was there a couple of weeks ago. They brought the house down. No violin, but a hot-shit cimbalom player was with him, as well as the bass & drums. It's difficult for any studio album to hold up to a live show in intensity, but I'd say Egyenes does a pretty good job of it. There are some intense solos on that thing, as well as some fiery gypsy dance numbers and some more mellow meditative parts: often all within the same track. I haven't heard Quiet As it Is yet, but I just ordered it (along with the Hungarian Bebop one with Archie Shepp) so I'll be able to see how it compares then.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Did Douglas or Frisell have anything out this year?

Frisell plays on the new Jenny Scheinman, 12 Songs, which is quite good too, btw.

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

The net is funny, I was searching for information about Dresch and I found that someone on another board had posted a review of the same gig in Vienna that I saw a few weeks ago:

http://www.able2know.com/forums/a2k-post1608179.html#1608179

Here's another link to the same review on her blog (with pictures):

http://dagmaraka.blogspot.com/2005/10/ethno-jazz.html

o. nate (onate), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I should try Mehldau too. Did Douglas or Frisell have anything out this year

They both did, Sundar, but I haven't heard any of it. Frisell had some live albums, and Dave Douglas had that, uh, that band that walked up a mountain. Apparently he has another 'electric' album still to come this year.

I didn't hear very much jazz this year, except for New Orleans/trad stuff. The Bad Plus album is good, better than their last, but I haven't even checked out the new Dave Holland Big Band.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Thanks for that, o. nate. They're really a remarkable group - alternatingly devastating, lovely and frantic. When I saw him it was cimbalom, drums, bass, fiddle and Dresch on sax and asian transylvanian flute (?). I'll order Egyenes Zene - can anyone recommend any UK dealers for Hungarian music? I found it for £14+shipping, but that's not exactly optimal...

sean gramophone (Sean M), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:02 (twenty years ago)

x-posts: I was gonna start a thread on Jenny Scheinman the other day. I saw her play with Frisell's "orchestra" or whatever he calls it and thought she was great, so I bought that album and it's real good too. A potential candidate for a top 10 list. Lovely stuff, with enough wildness to keep it interesting. Probably the first album to include songs dedicated to Walt Whitman, Jim Woodring, Nels Cline and Albert Ayler.

Mihaly Dresch sounds really interesting.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Top three:
Brooke Valentine, Chain Letter
Bratz Rock Angels, s/t
Robyn, s/t

2005 made me forget that pop albums are supposed to be two good singles and a lot of filler.

Honorable mentions: MIA, Fiery Furnaces, Electric Six, SOD. On the fence: New Pornographers. Apparently people really like the Beck album so theoretically I could end up re-evaluating that but it seems unlikely.

Could make it once I hear the full album: Mountain Goats, Wolf Parade, Lightning Bolt, Of Montreal, Madonna, Kanye, Sufjan, Missy, Fiona, although I strongly doubt that last one.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 16:15 (twenty years ago)

(Value-added version:

Mohammad Iskandar: Hakini

If you like foot-stomping Lebanese Shabai/traditional music--and I can't think of any other regular who does--this is a very good pick. I knew nothing of Iskandar before this, but according to the Radio Lebanon site, he has recorded 15 albums, and is a pretty well-known singer in this vein.

Miguel “Anga” Diaz: Echu Mingua

Anga Diaz's virtuoso conga playing pulls the album together, despite the variety from track to track. There are a couple unconventional covers of jazz classics, a chamber piece by an Argentine composer, and short free form pieces (like the fantastic "Dracular Simon"). If you translated the Thirsty Ear Blue Series template (if there is one) into Afro-Cuban terms, it might sound something like this. (Destroy: second-to-last track which reunites Diaz with Irakere band-mates members and drifts into bad Cuban funk-fusion territory.)

Jon Hassell: Maarifa Sreet

Despite not liking how the rhythms of the programmed percussion on this (much of the time), I've been playing it regularly. This is largely Jon Hassell's show, but effects-and-all, not stripped down like Fascinoma. No surprises, but good brooding chill-out music.

I hope these don't sound too pseudo-reviewy. I think they do.)

CLAP CLAP/FLUXBLOG DIVISIVENESS!

Quiet you. Actually, having listened to "Red Red Red" (which FB posted) a few times while walking to work in the morning now, I actually have some interest in hearing the album, as opposed to my previous none. (Something about that song plus steam coming off the NYC streets really sells it.) I generally dislike Ms. Apple, though, and the Brion tracks were pleasant enough but definitely not top-anything material.

Sean's talked me down from the Wolf Parade, Mountain Goats, and Sufjan somewhat, although I'll still give at least the first two a shot.

Eppy (Eppy), Tuesday, 1 November 2005 19:14 (twenty years ago)

I tried it. It's a whole lot mellower than I expected from the descriptions (THE HUNGARIAN COLTRANE !!), but lovely nonetheless. Nice strings.

As you can see, in dancehall I go for the hardcore stuff.

So far it's ...

System of a Down -- Mezmerize
My Moring Jacket -- Z
Bloc Party -- Silent Alarm

Subject to change, obviously, as I fill in the listening holes. I'd love to put Kanye up there, but the bullshit in the middle of the record weighs it down considerably.

But I can see the Howling Hex album getting knocked out of third by either the Blood On The Wall or Deerhoof albums, depending on how much they continue to grow on me.

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Probably a very "duh" comment, but: albums really are more of a rock(ist) thing, aren't they? That list is in no way indicative of my very pop-heavy list of favorite songs from the past year.

I'm surprised to see the Smog record come up so many times. I like it a lot, but I kind of got the impression that people don't pay as much attention to him anymore.

1. Mike Wexler - EP
2. Deerhoof - Runners Four

Hard to even pick a third one - I can think of some records I liked well enough, but none of them enough to make #3 (but I don't write record reviews, so I don't have as much access to free new releases):

My Morning Jacket - Z
The Occasion - Cannery Hours
Silver Jews - Tanglewood Numbers
MIA (I keep flip-flopping on this one)
The Evens

Tom Ze's Estudando o Pagode, which I had to buy as an import, is my favorite of his late-period albums.

moxie chaser, Sunday, 6 November 2005 21:55 (twenty years ago)

I can't fucking wait until I finally get my broadband connection working and finally get to listen to some of these. So far this year:

1. Vitalic - OK Cowboy
2. Antony and the Johnsons - I Am A Boy Now
3. British Sea Power - Open Season (believe me, I'm as surprised as you are)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Sunday, 6 November 2005 22:32 (twenty years ago)

I know Kate Bush's Aerial will end up being my album of the decade after a few more listens, but for now I'll say:
1. Mew - ...And The Glass Handed Kites (Genesis' Wind & Wuthering's little brother; even though it would be ignored I should start a thread about this album as it doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves)
2. Minus The Bear - Menos el Oso
3. The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute

There are lots of things I haven't heard enough of, but I doubt anything like M.I.A. or the New Pornographers would supplant these choices.

Sundar (sundar), Monday, 7 November 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Harris Newman - Accidents With Nature And Each Other
Dangerdoom - The Mouse and the Mask
Deerhoof - The Runners Four

Those three are picked arbitrarily and loads of great records come to mind: Quasimoto, Lightning Bolt, Jack Rose... has no one mentioned Black Dice?

Ogmor Roundtrouser (Ogmor Roundtrouser), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

Hey Mersenne Twister, thanks for the jazz reccs. They sound good.

Seconded. I'd like to hear that Jamie Saft record.

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Sundar: the MTB is less tappy than their older ones, though there is one funny wanky solo on one song. The whole album has a very lush autumnal sound/feel to it. If I read one more review saying the singer sounds like the guy from Cake I'm gonna kick someone. If you're a fan of vocal/keyboard driven prog the Mew might appeal as well, plus J Mascis sings on a couple of songs (taking the place of Stina Nordenstam(!) who was on their last one).

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 7 November 2005 20:37 (twenty years ago)

And it was really cool to see that someone liked the latest Farm Fresh enough to put it on their list. I'll let Hunnicutt know.

There's a sort of maxi-EP, called *Vertically Challenged.* Eight tracks (incl three remixes of other tracks) in 30-some minutes. Supposedly out in early November, though alls I have is an advance version. Very good chance of making my Pazz & Jop ballot regardless.

Why no love for Jamie Lidell's "Multiply"? That's my number one. Now there are quite a few posts to sift through but I only saw it mentioned once.

01. Jamie Lidell- Multiply [Warp]
02. Isolee - We Are Monster [Playhouse]
03. DJ Koze - Kosi Comes Around [Kompakt]

Jamie has a lock on #1. The other two could easily be another dozen records- Matias Aguayo, Alex Under, Murcof, Safety Scissors, etc.

One of the nice things about the digital era is that I (and you :) can tell more or less automatically what I've listened to the most.

Bloc Party - Slient Alarm
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike

are the clear leaders, with a big group (Roisin Murphy, Saint Etienne, Ladytron, British Sea Power) fighting it out for third. Although BSP has an advantage since they came out earlier in the year.
