Randy Newman 12 Songs
Pet Shop Boys Actually

I was under the impression that I hadn't actually BOUGHT an album in ages, but then I remembered I picked up used vinyl copies of both when I was in State College around xmas.

'Twan (miccio), Friday, 6 January 2006 00:59 (twenty years ago)

Hector Lavoe - "La Voz" (Fania - 1975)

I don't have that, but I recognize some of the songs on it (as classics). I probably should have it. You found that on vinyl? I don't collect vinyl, so I don't know how difficult that would be to find, but he's so well-loved that I would think it might be difficult to find used.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Friday, 6 January 2006 01:00 (twenty years ago)

it's a great record. and, yeah, vinyl. the brazilians here don't buy vinyl. i've got the market to myself.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 January 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

"the brazilians here don't buy vinyl."

In sales got:

The Band - s/t
Lee Perry - Produced and Directed By The Upsetter

From a charity shop, where I got into a conversation with the French woman behind the counter about "that singer who died in his bath", Claude Francois - specifically about whether it was a radio that fell into his bath and electrocuted him (my theory) or it was an electric fire that fell into his bath and electrocuted him (her theory):

Jacques Dutronc - 36 Grand Succes

... 36 songs from 1966-68. Silly sub-Dylan stuff in French. Very likeable.

"Where are you are you that there are so many Brazilians?"

martha's vineyard island. big brazilian population here. at least 5 churches and 4 stores.

scott seward (scott seward), Friday, 6 January 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

There are lots of Brazilians on Martha's Vineyard now? I lived and worked there for a while, years back. There were always lots of Portugese -- like all of southern Massachusetts and Cape Cod -- but they weren't Brazilian at all, mostly fishing people whose families hailed originally from the Azores and Cape Verde islands, also Portugal itself. Lots of linguica pizza, kale soup, and sweet bread. (Back then, all they bought was vinyl, of course, but it was mostly disco or Fleetwood Mac, like everyone else.)

Vornado, Friday, 6 January 2006 14:36 (twenty years ago)

there have always been lots of portugese in massachusetts, rhode island, the cape, etc. going back to the whaling days. but, yeah, now there are lots of brazilian people too. have been for quite some time. they are doing the american dream thing. mowing lawns or building houses for ten years, never spending a dime(brazilian restaurants on the island have a hard time cuz the brazilians never spend money eating out), then starting their own businesses, buying land, getting rich. well, not everybody. but they do okay. they basically took over all the jobs that vacationing college kids used to do. vacationing college kids don't come here like they used to. too expensive.

Special Agent Gene Krupa, my friend, how's the Vilayat Khan? Is it recent?

Garden's pretty great, eh, Matt #2? Have you heard Myrninerest from this year? It's not as immediate but I think there's a lot there.

As for me, Susuma Yokota - Grinning Cat
Got CD copies of Presence and Sonic Nurse
a few Karnatak discs from my parents or their friends: D. K. Jayraman, Kadri Gopalnath, Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan (very interesting violinist who appears to incorporate some modern, even avant-garde Western techniques into his playing, as well as e.g. playing with the thavil (a loud drum played with sticks, not usually used with violin). Apparently he's a bit of an outcast from the trad Karnatak crowd but has a devoted cult following as a nouveau [post-Karnatak?] artist. I like it in any case.)

Also I bought Dave Douglas' Keystone towards the end of 2005.

Sundar, that Kunnakudi Vaidyanathan sounds awesome (by your description), not that I've exactly begun to absorb what straight Karnatak classical stuff is all about to begin with.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Thursday, 12 January 2006 03:18 (twenty years ago)

Hey Sundar. No, that's not a recent release. recorded in the late sixties i'd guess, judging by the label and sleeve.

went to J&R to buy the new phish live disc immediately upon learning of its existence (sentimental reasons, if no others), and they were having a sale on catalog stuff, so i got...

John Prine - at times, i have difficulty putting up with his voice for long stretches, but this is filled with great stuff

Indigo Girls, Rites of Passage - to replace my very old and in a bad way cassette. but this isn't really very good, is it? oh well.

Prince, 1999 - listened to half of it. the non-singles are a bit disappointing thus far.

Grateful Dead, Aoxomoxoa - I haven't really listened much to their pre-70s stuff, so the '60s sound is a bit funny, but this is wonderful even already knowing at least half of it.

Morrissey, Vauxhall and I - I had meant to put this one back and get Your Arsenal instead, but apparently I mixed them up. Oop. Will return.

Haven't listened yet

both first water psychedelic ridiculousness, though i'm highly pissed freak emporium is charging $24 for a fucking CDR of the blue phantom album (and not mentioning that it isn't a real cd).

Riz Ortolani's soundtrack to the infamous gorefilm "Cannibal Holocaust" is completely stunning: syrupy mellotron instrumental literock ballads, sweeping orchestral weepers, phaser funk and disco, bizarre Captain n Tennile on a steamboat 70s pop- this thing is awesome! The fact that it was the score for such a greasy grimey gorefest makes it even more odd and perfect.

Stelios Kazantzidis: Megales Epitixies Dekaetia '50
Manolis Aggelopoulos: Megales Fones Tou Laikou Tragoudiou
Glykeria: Rebetika Vol.1

Unfortunately, they were out the collection of Kazantzidis songs from the 60s and 70s that I also wanted, as well as a 2-CD collection of live Haris Alexiou recordings. My Greek CD folly begins.

Cute picture.

(I have a live recording of this song on tape. It reminds me of cooking Greek food for hours on end, back when I used to do that. More than any other music, Greek music puts me in the mood to cook.)

Got a disc of ensemble recherche playing chamber works by Younghi Pagh-Paan (from South Korea). Really enjoying these especially the septet right now, will need to get some old Korean music records and check to see how these silences relate.

Very old school New York salsa so far, but without sounding like the SHO/Soneros del Barrio take on "old school New York salsa." Pretty good. A little more on the Barretto side of things than I usually prefer, but I don't know, I like it.

Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes - Decades of Destruction

This was a suprising find of two Nugent LP's reissued together on CD that I thought were out of print, "Tooth, Fang and Claw" and "Call of the Wild". This stuff is great, as good or better than his Epic albums from a year or two later.

Okay, I bought a few things before this but my mind is slightly mush at present from a fine weekend. I did get all these this weekend for a measly $10 thanks to credit and clearance shopping at Amoeba in SF:

Ghost - Tune In, Turn On, Free Tibet

... title track is a 33 minute psychedelic freakout, so that's good obviously. Howevah, the rest of the album consists of drippy hippy-dippy "Hello trees, hello flowers" psych-folk nonsense (of the sort a lot of people (too many) seem to be indulging in, and for which I recommend the administering of a swift kick in the nads for trying to get away in this day and age)
