The Zeigeist thread

A thread to talk about the fake 12th track that was tacked onto the Knife album and is, perversely, my favourite record of 2006 so far.

Anyone know if there's any more of this out there?

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 13:55 (nineteen years ago)

It's here, by the way

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

they are working on a ep. (That will inklude a cover version of Kylie “Giving you Up”)

according to one person in the comments box for the Zeigest post on length.se

let's make this record #1 everywhere!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

Oh and it's ZeigeIst if a mod can edit.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

ack, that's a capital i, not an l

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

The chorus to this is infuriatingly reminiscent of something I can't quite place. Strawberry Switchblade?

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:10 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, maybe it just is a poppier version of "If I only could, I'd make a deal with God..." as suggested on the other thread.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:14 (nineteen years ago)

maybe? it is obviously the melody/run of "running up that hill"

fucking brilliant song.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:17 (nineteen years ago)

(i'm referring to zeigeist)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:18 (nineteen years ago)

There's one voice singing Bizarre Love Triangle while the other one is busy singing Kate Bush.

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:23 (nineteen years ago)

Prize to Snowballing - it was BLT I was thinking of.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:24 (nineteen years ago)

if that's what they look like... my new favorite group?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:26 (nineteen years ago)

They even LOOK like The Knife ha ha

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:28 (nineteen years ago)

oh no, this track was my fave so far off the album! that and the title track. stuff in the middle is good and i'm sure will grow on me, but after 4 listens those two bookend tracks do stick out :-(

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:30 (nineteen years ago)

I wish someone really would do a bootleg of 'Running up that hill' and 'Bizarre Love Triangle' now.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:37 (nineteen years ago)

That will inklude a cover version of Kylie “Giving you Up”

SCREAM

With these words my initial disappointment that this track wasn't brand new Knife goodness has been vanquished. I have never before been so pleased to have been proved a big wrong.

j0e (j0e), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:38 (nineteen years ago)

I wish someone really would do a bootleg of 'Running up that hill' and 'Bizarre Love Triangle' now.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 14:39 (nineteen years ago)

I was hoping this was about the Austin Zeitgeist, seeing as how I've had "Freight Train Rain" in my head lately.

I too thought this was about the 80s Austin band.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

"Things Don't Change" = the secret best song of 80s/indie/college rock nobody knows about.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

I know about it!
Great album all the way - "Freight Train Rain," "Blue Eyes," "Hill County Theme," etc.
Too bad they screwed up the CD mastering with the added echo and murk.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

So seriously, there's yet another band called Zeitgeist?
I thought the reason the Austin Zeitgeist had to change their name (to the Reivers) was because there was already some new age band with the same moniker.

Jim M (jmcgaw), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

the group is called ZEIGEIST.

no T.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but more people have HEARD of geto boys

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

the purpose of this thread is to get people to have HEARD of zeigeist, therefore, should be the way they spelled it.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

it's still stupid that they spelled it that way.

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

google the word and you'll find many others who spell it that way.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

oh not this conversation again!

stockholm cindy (winter version) (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 25 January 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

I run the blog on http://www.length.se where I recently posted Tar Heart. Tar Heart is (to clear out some misunderstandings) a song made by, and performed by Zeigeist.
They are working on an EP and rumour has that they're negotiating a deal regarding publishing and/or distribution.

I WILL SOON POST A NEW TRACK BY ZEIGEIST ON MY BLOG. I'LL KEEP YOU POSTED!

Eric Length Persson, Thursday, 26 January 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

thanks!

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 26 January 2006 23:03 (nineteen years ago)

TS: sublime marriage of two 80s pop classics vs cacophonous example of amateurish sonic butchery at it's worst

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:01 (nineteen years ago)

God, Zeigiest really did do a Bush/Order mashup, didn't they? Ah well, they could steal from worse.

js (honestengine), Friday, 27 January 2006 00:14 (nineteen years ago)

this zeigeist sounds better than it actually is only because people've been hearing it after the drab knife album, obviously. nice marketing.

blame bluto, Friday, 27 January 2006 00:20 (nineteen years ago)

thanks, eric "length" persson, if that is really your middle name.

cutty (mcutt), Friday, 27 January 2006 02:54 (nineteen years ago)

You know, I'm sort of hoping every other Zeigeist track is as blatant a steal from equally amazing sources and they turn out to be the Oasis of electro.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

Except good, obviously.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:29 (nineteen years ago)

so seriously, can the knife be sued over this? it's pretty blatant. great melody, works great in this context, but blatant, right?

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:31 (nineteen years ago)

Why would they be sued? If anything, someone linked with Zeigeist leaked it as part of the Knife album to ensure people would hear it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Is this the first time that this kind of viral marketing actually works ?

snowballing (snowballing), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:38 (nineteen years ago)

well, I figure if George Harrison can be sued for "My Sweet Lord", why not The Knife? Maybe times have changed though.

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:40 (nineteen years ago)

But this is nothing to do with The Knife.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

wait, so this won't be on the record? (I'm on a couple hours sleep here, bear with me)

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:45 (nineteen years ago)

No, people have just been including it on leaked copies of 'Silent Shout' for some reason (to boost Zeigeist presumably).

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

ic ic. yeah, this is kind of genius (if still kind of sinister) marketing then. but then marketing is sinister

Dominique (dleone), Friday, 27 January 2006 13:49 (nineteen years ago)

marketing isn't sinister. clever is all.

papal rape, Friday, 27 January 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

i doubt Zeigeist have any control over it either. Just some mischeivous filesharers wanting to spread the word? Or maybe they're all in cahoots who knows.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Friday, 27 January 2006 14:04 (nineteen years ago)

ha, dominique thought we started a thread about ONE song off of the knife album.

anyway, i doubt kate would sue over this. EMI(?), maybe.

It's good BTW!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Sunday, 29 January 2006 07:28 (nineteen years ago)

Yes 'Length' is my real middle name. Strange? I know ;-)

Sorry I havent published a new zeigeist track like I promised. It may take a while longer than I thought. Bear with me. I'll let you know when!

I heard Zeigeist playing on swedish radio last night...www.sr.se (P3POP) -love it!

lola, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Length, can you give us more information about Zeigeist. Where are they from? Do they have any ties with the Knife? Any idea why that track got tagged onto the end of Silent Shout? Why the mysterious 'F as in knife' title? What does 'Boyleg prank' really mean? What have they released up to now? What will they be releasing soon? When oh when oh when can we hear this Kylie cover?

Affectian (Affectian), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 13:23 (nineteen years ago)

whenuweremine (whenuweremine), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 20:24 (nineteen years ago)

Hi, I'll gladly publish another zeigeist track when I am able to.
Zeigeist is from Sweden. They haven't released anything officially yet and have only played a handful of gigs as far as I know.

Zeigeist will perform at party in Gothenburg this summer though. This will take place sea side in the beautiful archipelago of Gothenburg. And get this, they will perform on raft!!

Zeigeist dont make too much noise. Hence its hard being up to date. But aside from checking out www.length.se and this thread from time to time, the best thing is probably to visit www.gs2h.com out for upcoming gigs.

with love
/Eric

Eric Length Persson, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Oops, missed a word there - I meant ON a raft.

btw, I got a new pic of zeigeist on www.length.se

Eric Length Persson, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:04 (nineteen years ago)

what is your connection to the group, eric?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

also: does liking zeigeist make me gay?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 21:19 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. Yes it does. You big Mary.

Thanks for the pic Eric. Can't wait to hear the new mp3 *makes persuasive and encouraging noises*

j0e (j0e), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

One of the memebers of the band and he was kind enough to send me an additional track. It's a cover of Kylie's "Giving You Up". More Zeigeist goodness.

Enjoy - http://s18.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=1U936POUYNJCW04G0BM7ARYF1W

jdowe (jdowe), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:30 (nineteen years ago)

A squib compared to 'Tar heart', but then most things are. :/

The girl sounds like how I imagine moomins would sing. The geezer sounds a bit like Thomas Leer circa 'Snobbery and decay'.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:40 (nineteen years ago)

good but not great, but i wasn't a big fan of the Kylie original anyway

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 17:42 (nineteen years ago)

nice. still excited to hear more originals, though!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

i suspect zeigeist do not in fact exist except on a conceptual rex the dog type level!

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

the pictures of them speak volumes!

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

If Zeigeist really exists (which I also doubt), who should sue them first ? The Knife, New Order or Kate Bush ?

snowballing (snowballing), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

or kylie?

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

Why should anyone sue them? Its ridiculous.

JohnM, Saturday, 11 February 2006 17:39 (nineteen years ago)

The Contours have sued George Harrisson for less than that. Don't misunderstand me : I really love "F as in knife", or whatever else it's called, but I'm pretty sure there would be a copyright issue if it was released properly.

snowballing (snowballing), Saturday, 11 February 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

I think the "influence" is obvious, and that's really cool! Compare it to Scissor Sisters in "comfortably numb), they haven't been sued by Frankie goes to hollywood (relax) OR Bee Gees (for the sound).

JohnM, Saturday, 11 February 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

i don't think kate would ever sue over this.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

The main difference is that I'm pretty sure a legal analysis of the song would demonstrate it goes beyond being just an influence.
To tell you the truth, I first thought this Zeigeist stuff was "released" under an alias to avoid legal issues, but with the Kylie cover I just don't know anymore.

snowballing (snowballing), Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Please explain, what is "legal analysis"? Is the notes stolen or what? I also just can hear it's influed by kate and new order as you've said. Especially when the background voice is singing the "running"-phrase. But the melody is quickly changing... So what!

kit, Saturday, 11 February 2006 20:20 (nineteen years ago)

you can read some info about "Giving You Up" at a swedish site: it's actually not a zeigeist-song! They "did it just for fun, for a special performance".

JohnM, Sunday, 12 February 2006 01:06 (nineteen years ago)

These "legal" comments are really sucking the joy out of these tracks. Why can't the people that have heard it just enjoy it if they do?

johnathan dowe (jdowe), Sunday, 12 February 2006 02:16 (nineteen years ago)

OTM, stop worrying about it. It's a fantastic song by an unknown band. Biggup to them.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Sunday, 12 February 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

parts of this song remind me of "toxic"

joseph (joseph), Monday, 13 February 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

me and three friends in gothenburg, sweden, run a gayclub called gaystraight2hell (gs2h.com) and we have hade zeigeist performning on our club a couple of times, i was dancing with them on stage last time...i guess they are the next big thing, have 4-5 songs with them at home...fucking brilliant, overconceptual music...

johan olsson, Monday, 13 February 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

4-5 songs? PLEASE?

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 00:12 (nineteen years ago)

Zeigeist feature in my radio show tonight. The interview is in Swedish, but there will be snippets of a couple of new songs if you're interested. (Sorry, promised to not leek them as they're not mastered etc.)

Available online from midnight (Swedish time) at www.sr.se/p3/pop. Click speaker icons top right on page. It will be about 20 minutes in, second hour. Show stays online for one week.

Like Hanna says, the show is http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/p3/programsidor/index.asp?ProgramID=953
It's in the second part of the program, about 29 minutes into it. They play snippets of a couple of other Zeigeist tracks.

Affectian (Affectian), Thursday, 23 February 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

can anyone post up the zeigeist cover of Kylie, i cant find it anywhere... cheers x

That's a nice sleeve as well.

finally, some company for the Zombies down there at the alphabetical ass-end of my CD collection

jamescobo, Friday, 16 May 2008 16:19 (seventeen years ago)

Haha they've ripped off Just Can't Get Enough as well.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:03 (seventeen years ago)

I think Cuffs might be even better than Tarheart. Male vocals this time, sort of Superpitcher-esque, it's like the love song that soundtracks the Kraftwerk parody thread. "When you grab my hands like this, it's like the first time that we kiss". A big dose of Fade To Grey in the chorus as well, stunning stuff.

Matt DC, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:05 (seventeen years ago)

No "Chasing Your Shadow" :(

Telephone thing, Friday, 16 May 2008 21:25 (seventeen years ago)

Actually on further listens there are four or five songs that are easily as good as Tar Heart, it's not the standout track by any means.

Yeah Black Milk is tremendous, love that dinky skittering synth refrain over the top of it. That whole section from Bunny through to The Lake is almost entirely wonderful.

This movie is garbage it. intelligent design isn't playing. If you aren't a creationist, you need to get stoned and pray, because truly, the end is near. You can say the correlation of the pyramids of the world (not to mention the crop circles) are soley scientific inventions, or hypothesize that the correlating weight-measurement system across 'early' cultures was subliminally implanted in peoples' minds through migratory bird-song, but I say you are fucking ignorant. God I shouldn't even be telling you fags about this. go on watching your inane hyperactive phillistine 'writers' aka 'creative people' or 'false prophets' and and in 4 more years you'll be tossed into the furnace with the rest of the weeds.

During the past years, we have put more and more love into Zeigeist, fed her like the Queen she have been. At the end of the day, she has demanded all love within us. We have our personal reasons to kill her.

The release of our next single/EP, ”The Neverending Love”, a cover of Roxette’s first single, our first cover, will be moved to tomorrow (5th Feb.). The EP also contents ”Chasing your shadow all around the world” and a remix of ”Humanitarianism” by The Twelves. With this EP, we call it a day. This is the end of Zeigeist. The Queen is dead.

So we raise our glasses, make a toast, a toast in your honor, and tell you this: The search continues. We're going to find out about the Never. Ending. Love.

With thanks to all our fans

Zeigeist

genuine :( at this news. i love their album so much and they seemed like one of those bands that could release pretty much the same album over and over again and i'd never get tired of it.

one year passes...

99% sure they're back, without Per Störby (who now works as Pearl Fiction).

Fondly hope Zeigeist become posthumous TikTok legends like Life Without Buildings did.
