I stand by my upthread recommendations for the Roots Tonic Riddim

I've not heard anything other than the new Steely & Clevie riddim Capital P (a recut of Punanny) which is excellent (Mr Vegas cut is particularly good.) And the Riddim Driven for Nookie 2K6 is out in a couple of weeks (mentioned above in regards to the Buju cut "Look Out Fi Dem".) And the Chinkuzi riddim (PLUS a its five remixes) is set to drop anyday.

Picked up a tape called Culture Vibes on Killa Snake Promotions -- anyone hearda this?

Not sure if it's the same dude as "STD," but if you're singling out the voice, I think the odds are high.

Also, this chorus is delivered in the same melody as Mike Jones' "Back Then" but the lyrics are "Last night me get some punany, right now me want more punany."

Several years ago someone got stabbed and killed on the dancefloor of the Crossroads (on a hiphop and dancehall dj dance night--just stating the facts). As I stated above, I have been to soca and African shows there, and once to a happy hour there and never had any problems other than exhaustion because performers come onstage so late.

He'll tire of it when dancehall fans do (admittedly most stateside anyway already seem to have.)

all the revival riddims there, but 85 and sweat riddims a bit harshly represented tho - that isnt even the best spice tune on the 85! i can understand them not being able to licence 'ghetto story' anymore but i wdnt have thought ding dong 'badman fwd' wd have been a problem. and the busy signal and beenie tracks ('stamina' is a classic) will totally light that cd up.

I haven't heard the Yelloman or Pinchers on 85. The other Cham version ("Bring It On") is pretty good though.

Chinkuzi CD finally came out last week and it's great! All the different riddim versions are excellent! I think Chinkuzi's Revenge is my favorite, but they are all good.

Can anyone list me out a couple of the most popular revival riddims.. beyond Sleng Teng Ressurection.

Baby Cham at Crossroads

Sex and violence are common themes in modern Jamaican music, and an energetic Baby Cham referenced both repeatedly in a 75-minute set that began at 2:45 a.m. Sunday at Crossroads. But the man who may be the next Sean Paul -- a dancehall artist who crosses over to the U.S. hip-hop market -- has such a charming personality that even his filthiest material sounds like a playful boast rather than a bad-man pledge.

A one-time prote©geé of Bounty Killer, Baby Cham shares the same sort of guttural growl when he's rapping. But Cham also has a decent singing voice, and while he didn't use it all that often, the times he did showed a deep gospel influence. Cham even belted a verse from Bad English's 1989 power ballad "When I See You Smile," a big hit in Jamaica in 1992 when it was remade by Singing Sweet.

"Heading to the Top" was hip-hop with a Jamaican accent, while "Vitamin S," "Many Many" and "Ghetto Pledge" were straight dancehall bangers. But it's the raw "Ghetto Story" that has given the 29-year-old Cham the next-big-thing buzz. The extended version he performed live wasn't very focused, but it was still a thrill whenever the shouted "Rah rah rah!" chorus rang out with the roaring help of the club-wide choir.

Cham followed Spice, an attractive female deejay from Jamaica, and three local opening acts.

What is that song about? All I'm seeing is results in German.

"Brooklyn, are you sleee-py?" Over and over again during Friday's concert in Prospect Park, the dancehall reggae pioneer Barrington Levy asked this singsong question. His voice is so sweet that the question almost sounded like the beginning of a lullaby. In fact, it was the opposite of one: the answer was always a resounding no.

The almost-free concert (fans were asked to pay $3) was part of Celebrate Brooklyn, an annual summer series known for drawing diverse acts and mellow crowds to the park. Too mellow, sometimes: it's hard to get riled up about anything when you're enjoying a breezy night under the trees and stars. But Mr. Levy, who has been a reggae star since 1979, plainly loves applause, and knows a thing or two about how to keep it coming.

Mr. Levy was among the first stars of dancehall reggae. The style, which has dominated Jamaican music since the 1980's, is built on heavy bass-and-drum-driven tracks; singers adapted by using more words and fewer notes. In "Shine Eye Gal," one of Mr. Levy's first hits, he complained about a fickle girlfriend by listing her many desires: "You want uptown, you want downtown/You want fancy car, you want superstar." Then he begged, "Tell me wha' you really wa-ah-ah-ah-ant."

That last, distended word is crucial: Mr. Levy is now known for a specific sort of melisma: he'll draw out a word or a sound by hopping a few intervals down the scale. Accordingly, the most famous word in his oeuvre is the sublime "whoa-oa-oh," from his hit "Here I Come." The second most famous? "Skiddly-waddily-iddily-diddily-diddily" (or something), from the same song. He resurrected both when he collaborated with Shyne on the 2000 hip-hop hit "Bad Boyz." And he pleased fans, serious and casual, by doing all of it — a short "Bad Boyz," a long "Here I Come," nonstop "whoa" and "skiddily" — during Friday's cheerful show.

Mr. Levy's career began as reggae stars were figuring out whether to be good guys or (to use the Jamaican term) bad men. He chose righteousness, but a lot of his best songs flirt with wickedness. "Murderer," which began Friday's set, might seem like a simple antiviolence song. But when he sings, "Dem a murrr-de-rah," what you really notice is how cool that last word sounds. (Needless to say, this lesson wasn't lost on many of his tough-talking successors.)

These days, this former upstart (he was born in 1964, and began recording as a teenager) is a respected veteran. And a man who did as much as anyone to make roots reggae sound old-fashioned now tells his audience, "You got to take it right back to the roots."

Some of his more pious newer songs lacked the spry charm of his mischievous old ones. And the middle of his set definitely sagged. (Part of the problem might have been that it was long enough to have a middle: dancehall reggae often sounds best in bursts.) But he kept waking up the nonsleepy crowd by returning to the classic dancehall songs that made his reputation. And before the encore, the crowd rewarded him with a spirited chant of: "We want more! We want more!" For at least one man in the park — one ma-ah-an — this was probably the highlight of the night.

Undisputed is pretty good. Strengths are the more Jamaican tracks -- "Hmmm Hmmm" and "Come Again" on the Sweat riddim.

I'm not as into the American productions -- Scott Storch on "Dutty Wine Gal" and that crossover jam "Girls" with Akon.

dry, drab, technical/formalist, masculine, instrumental or militant, serious, linear - pinched, meagre, referencing futurism (e.g. techstep)

vs

splashy, vibrant, technicolour, feminine, handbag, exotic/bizarro, non-sequitor - fabuloso, being the future (e.g. two-step)

The title track "My Princess Gone" is really good! I haven't heard the rest of it though.

broadly speaking, most of the riddims about are more or less wholly predictable chips off the tribal/militaristic/marching bandy block, with i dunno, portentous synth stabs, corleone-brand staccato filigree on top, and so on. step forward riddims sweat/foundation/inspector/driff/angrier management/octane/galore/dutty landlord/12 gauge/smash (which is quite cheerful, granted)/full draw/cashley/really it would have been 100x quicker to list the ones that arent patterned thus.

i'm sure we said all this in 2005 as well, but then there was an actual military riddim, the success of which ppl were entitled to try replicate. now it's just endemic.

96% of the rest are of course throwback riddims, which can have their merits but generally just add to the overall grimness - throwback giggy/bogle resurrection has probly been the only non warlike retro revival, and it was class! paul's (positively martianesque)rundown probably has the "referencing the future/not being the future" aspect down right, i'd say; when i invoke dubstep it's not to say things sound like digital mystics or whatever, (dem time deh riddim tho?) but that they currently fall into that frame of fandom. i do do that a lot.

the disappointing new kano/vybz/corleone thing gets a special mention: _____________________

I like most of the new breed of "militaristic" riddims (and yeah Dem Time Deh is almost dubstep-y or at least what I wish dubstep was like most of the time) more than the boring ass military snare riddims from last year, but I suspect I am the "wrong clientele" anyway ;). At the same time the most enjoyable riddims of this year have definitely been the ones that have avoided these tropes (the Dave Kelly and the Frenchie stuff comes immediately to mind.)
