all the kids at my little sister's high school love this guy. he's local to here (costa mesa, CA), i think. he's somehow affiliated with clothing label (who also actually do a lot of really cool things) RVCA. he just played at my friend's bar... i didn't go though. not too upset that i missed it.

Speaking of funnier and grosser, in that one pic he's "kissing" that girl with that other girl's hair in his mouth as she smiles without a clue. Look at that! It's more like he's eating that little girl's mouth rather than kissing her!

(The licking reminds me of the frontman for Les Savvy Favs, who crawled around on the floor, only to pop up and lick people's faces while they looked horrified).

Yeah he was in CBS crew in the 90s. I read in an article that his crew turns out to his shows.

Confounded (Confounded), Saturday, 6 January 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think his music was in my cmj bag and it made it soggy.

That said, I can see the appeal, even in those pix. Mind-boggling grossity is a big part of it. Ever been to a really bad (by which I mean good) drag show?

I finally heard this album -- and it's completely awesome. It switches between outrageously stupid, horrifically decadent, and heartbreakingly depressing. And I like at least 4 of the songs right off the bat (free lunches): "Waiting to Die," "Jane Fonda," "Roll the Dice," and "Friends and Lovers." Anyone - more talk about Avalon. The greatest invention since sliced Eminem?

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

The reports about his SXSW show opening for Ghostface and Rakim have been, how you say, amusing.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

i read a pretty amazing cover story on him in the LA Weekly about a year ago:

http://www.laweekly.com/general/features/mickey-avalons-true-hollywood-stories/13270/

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I heard something about that... I also heard that when he opened for RHCP, the crowd got pissed. Until Flea came out and hugged Avalon or something and told the crowd to chill out. I don't know... he seems like the kinda person like Doherty or Winehouse where the music could get caught up in the story around the music. Which isn't a bad thing, but I wonder if him opening for RHCP or Ghostface is the most useful context for his music (which sounds like it'd thrive in a context of poverty and obscurity). Obviously the whole underdog thing is at least slightly a myth - I mean, he's had songs on Entourage, right? But it's a really compelling myth. And the tone is amazing, IMHO. Not many other albums this or last year have sounds that imply this kind of narrative on their own (ie: without the need of lyrics, etc).

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

well he's terrible live. the most fucking excruciating 35 minutes of sxsw.

maura, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:10 (eighteen years ago)

i mean maybe it's just branding but the only two words i could make out during his ENTIRE SET were 'mickey' and 'avalon.' his drug-addled diction turned 'do the jane fonda' into 'do the tampon.' it was like watching everything bad about the music industry, la, and white people at the same time. i wonder how much money has been poured into his <1,000 sales total.

also HE BROUGHT THE COBRASNAKE OUT ON STAGE.

maura, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)

if this guy got shot right in the face with a gun i wouldn't be upset.

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Weird his diction is so bad live - cause I have no problem understanding him on the album.

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

this dude is dire and he's got a fanbase more contemptible than any other music artist i can think of.

botero, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

Every time this is revived, I'm terrified he's become a big star and this is how I'm gonna find out.

forksclovetofu, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe not a big star yet, but his album is all the fuck over Best Buy with some prime placement.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

From listening to "My Dick," it sounds like he may be the only artist ever influenced by Methods of Mayhem.

marmotwolof, Tuesday, 20 March 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I can't imagine a huge mainstream audience making Avalon into a star. Are they even allowed to sell this album in Walmart?

"My dick, locked in a cage, right?
Your dick, suffers from stage fright."

(...) he seems like the kinda person like Doherty or Winehouse where the music could get caught up in the story around the music.

i think that's what he and his label are hoping for cause the music is shit. i'm beginning to think, especially after reading the l.a. weekly fluff piece about him, that he might be the first real person to suffer from IDS.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 01:22 (eighteen years ago)

"i think that's what he and his label are hoping for cause the music is shit. i'm beginning to think, especially after reading the l.a. weekly fluff piece about him, that he might be the first real person to suffer from IDS"

Tories had a chronic case of this couple of years back.

Frogman Henry, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

Botero, I think he's too full of himself, and too arrogant for it to be martyr-music. If anything, the heartbreaking moments are the chinks in his armor - like when he thinks he's being kickass, and there's a note or lyric in the background that just undermines that completely. Arguably, the whole thing is heartbreaking, though. The whole dick competition is so ridiculous, it comes off like a traumatized (though intelligent) kid, who has no idea that he's being completely inappropriate.

Mordechai Shinefield, Wednesday, 21 March 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

oh god, is this the point in the thread where he becomes popular enough that it starts getting populated by apologists and fans?

DustinR, Saturday, 8 December 2007 01:48 (seventeen years ago)

People have been saying that the music industry is going to die for the past decade. It's now said everyday. But only a few know that the music industry will indeed perish yet it will happen only through the actions of a lone horseman. That horseman will be Mickey Avalon.

In March 2007, Avalon was booed off the stage while opening for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, in Oklahoma City. During his set, Avalon threw his microphone at the audience in frustration, and walked off stage angrily. The next day, Red Hot Chili Peppers lead guitarist John Frusciante wrote a letter to the band's fans in Oklahoma City, accusing them of booing Avalon for personal issues, and having a lack of "regard for humanity."[14] A similar event happened when Avalon opened for the band at a show in the Netherlands where he left the stage after 25 minutes, after having a big food fight with the visitors of the show.

Has anyone seen the new Boost Mobile commercial with Young Jeezy and Jermaine Dupri? He has the last "verse" on it. This guy is seriously gonna be a major pop star.

A revival of a John Waters thread on ILE contained a post from 2007 from me talking about a photo of Waters with Mickey Avalon...and I had utterly, completely and totally forgotten who the hell Avalon was.
