I'm just curious... "come on people, lets stoke the ILM hive ego"... and is it true that Paul McCartney reads and sometimes posts? ( WT ducks epecting fiery flames of flameness)

winter testing (winter testing), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:12 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure that it's Marissa Marchant.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:17 (nineteen years ago)

Me...

or Geir.

Paul McCartney, Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett

Two Scoops (Magic Duster), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Kanye

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:25 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett

It's a vision.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:28 (nineteen years ago)

and is it true that Paul McCartney reads and sometimes posts?

Paul McCartney doesn't post here. You're thinking of the singer from Klaatu.

Cunga (Cunga), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:31 (nineteen years ago)

Is it true that dr3w d4niels printed out ilm threads on a dot matrix printer and used the sounds produced in his epic short story about the life of astronaut john glen?

yours fondly, harshaw. (mrgn), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:33 (nineteen years ago)

Gene Hackman, but he only posts to the rolling metal threads.

p@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:34 (nineteen years ago)

I say Drew. Why, I just saw a photo of him in a magazine! And he knows Bjork.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:35 (nineteen years ago)

See above - Macca does post here. That's his email address. And he's Geir's best mate - all those nights cosied up by the fireside bonding to Badfinger bootlegs. it must be true.

winter testing (winter testing), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:36 (nineteen years ago)

and is it true that Paul McCartney reads and sometimes posts?

Not here, you're thinking of I love eating baby seals.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:37 (nineteen years ago)

it's my unfortunate duty to report that the fame stats point to a Raggett owning...

john clarkson, Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:44 (nineteen years ago)

brad laner or howie gelb

billy scrotum, Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:50 (nineteen years ago)

Gelb's here? What threads?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:54 (nineteen years ago)

TS: Arthur vs. Godsmack

p@reene (Pareene), Thursday, 4 May 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

momus.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:01 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Bobcat Goldthwait posts here as "Esteban Buttez".

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:06 (nineteen years ago)

it's dan brown and we're all pwned

danny invincible (michael w.), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

The most famous regular here must be Momus, with Ned the runnerup. Several celebrities have posted here though.

White Town/Jyoti Mishra never was a regular here, right?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

Seems like Chuck Eddy is more famous than most of these people.

Mark (MarkR), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:12 (nineteen years ago)

Hahahahaha I was about to post that, Mark!

Dan (Come On, People) Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:13 (nineteen years ago)

More people I know recognize the name NED RAGGETT than Momus or Chuck Eddy.

JW (ex machina), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

Momus
Chuck
Matos
Douglas Wolk
John D.

Chairman Doinel (Charles McCain), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:14 (nineteen years ago)

I wish I could tell you all Mark Grout's true identity; but unfortunately I have been sworn to secrecy.

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:17 (nineteen years ago)

chuck eddy probably easy takes it overall for ilm (xgau and sasha frere-jones being the only sometime ilxors that trump his fame and neither post here anymore)(phil simms easy overall ilx), drew daniel's gotta easily be the most famous musician though saul williams might give him a run. ryan pitchfork probably second most overall truth be told (drew, j0hn, momus - fame in that order - representing fragments of the indie rock market that ryan would presumably cut across and more right?). gerard cosloy posted very briefly on ilb i think didn't he maybe? harvey weinstein used to post on the noise board.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

i think steve shasta's on espn2 every now and then.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:27 (nineteen years ago)

these days i feel like darnielle is more famous than daniel. and definitely more famous than chuck eddy. i mean, who knows who chuck eddy is besides rock critics and their fans?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:31 (nineteen years ago)

i mean drew is probably more of an international art celebrity whose picture shows up in glossy art magazines, but i gotta wonder what sales figures will be like for "the rose has teeth" compared to "the sunset tree."

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:34 (nineteen years ago)

(not that i don't wish him the best, of course!)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

you're forgetting bjork jaymc (who trumps whoever j0hn's collaborated with i'm thinking maybe though a lil while back miccio fooled me into believing for like 24 hours that j0hn was eric bachmann which was the only time i've ever been 'woah, no ways' about omg sooo famous ilxors but only cuz i sing 'web in front' at karaoke). eddy's the only one here famous enough to get a gawker hed or to be mocked unnamed (stupidly but still) on wfmu cuz no name neccessary. steve shasta might trump all these truth be told.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

James Murphy pops up here every so often, does he not?

He's not in the same superstar category as Ned Ragget but he's popular enough.

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:41 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'd never heard of chuck before I got here.

Didn't Geir make it on the pop charts in Norway?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:42 (nineteen years ago)

geir charted under quisling i think but his popularity faded quickly

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

steve shasta might trump all these truth be told.

agreed.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:43 (nineteen years ago)

I'm pretty famous amongst 15-year-old gamers.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

i think this is all from an american perspective though. the only writer mentioned here i'd heard of before i found ilm was ned raggett, so for me he wins. ned raggett - big in the uk!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:47 (nineteen years ago)

well yeah for all we know aja's like freaking madonna famous in utah, let's get serious here

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:48 (nineteen years ago)

You'd never heard of Stevie Chick?

(x-post)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:49 (nineteen years ago)

I'm amused by all this.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

Raggett nay be big in the UK but is he big in Japan?

Jeff K (jeff k), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:50 (nineteen years ago)

For reference, also check What musicians/other famous people have made posts on ILM?

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

I think this question should exclude journalists. No particular reason why.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:51 (nineteen years ago)

Only DJs and label heads allowed. Oh wait.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

i've still never heard of stevie chick!

x post

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Didn't Geir make it on the pop charts in Norway?

Got one song played twice on National radio. In a program mainly devoted to mp3's from the Net. I'm afraid that doesn't qualify me as a celebrity. :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Ned thinks I'm trolling to get vote? I wish I was famous. Stirmonster is the most famous DJ on here, of course.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ned thinks I'm trolling to get vote?

Teasing, sir. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:57 (nineteen years ago)

yr famous in my house dan!

stirmonster (stirmonster), Thursday, 4 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

I made the pop charts in Lativa, my friends.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

jb, i still wonder about whether working with bjork automatically confers fame on drew, if he's not necessarily recognized for it by most people.

I hope you're not referring to Stirmonster there.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:05 (nineteen years ago)

wait wait wait wait - when the hell was that jaymc? the photo or the collab? also: sorry bjork trumps. easy. c'mon dude. shoutout from hurley doesn't beat swan dress.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:07 (nineteen years ago)

I had this thought. Maybe I should get a bunch of pieces of saltwater taffy and iron them at the highest setting.

billy scrotum, Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

I was reading Jody Rosen's stuff long before I came across her here. She comes across much different on ILX than she does in her articles, though I appreciate her respect of Billy Joel nonetheless.

photo is from may 2005. obv darnielle and finn haven't worked together (not that that would mean anything, anyway) -- but dude's name and image are out there. also: drew daniel was not in that swan dress (although what a lovely vision!).

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:17 (nineteen years ago)

john kruk posts on i love baseball all the time, he mixes it up with morbius.

Don't know why I'm getting involved in this but Chuck's name was in the Village Voice on a regular basis for a long time! (Not to mention Spin. And the books are available at Chapters.)

2xpost Which one's you?

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:20 (nineteen years ago)

i'll be a new yorker cartoon next week (the band is getting a painting treatment). this will be, however, the pinnacle of my notoriety to date.

xxxpost - Dan, are you kidding me?! That was one of the most amazing glamour/fashion photoshoots of the last ten years.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

i don't know how it is in other towns but down here fat chance of finding a momus record, you can probably find some j0hn in the shops odds are, and yes of course you will easily find drew records in TWO spots. NOT counting bjork. the real battle is obv kruk vs. phil simms (kruk might take this though the ny thing might tilt it to phil).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:22 (nineteen years ago)

True, Sean is regularly on basic cable....

Sundar (sundar), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:23 (nineteen years ago)

phil simms easy overall ilx

Wait, you mean the former Giants QB posts over on ILX?

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:24 (nineteen years ago)

'over on'??? yeah he selfpromotes like a stylus hack though so i gotta give the tiebreaker to kruk (he's confident in his status).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

Hey guys, thanks for noticing me. It's been fun talking baseball with you all on ILB. Remember, your NL MVP right now is Ryan Freel! : )

Anyway, I'm not sure if I'm the most famous, because who's heard of me outside of baseball fans?? I haven't played in years! But thanks for the mention!

John Kruk, Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:31 (nineteen years ago)

yeah but it was a squeamish repelling mens fashion piece..not exactly arts and leisure....xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

dan bunnybrain (dan bunnybrain), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:34 (nineteen years ago)

HEY KRUK WHY YOU HATE NUMBERS BICHT

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:46 (nineteen years ago)

I'v heard of you, John, and I'm not a baseball fan.

I'm a Yankee fan. :)

Incidentally, did you ever just want to go up to Mitch Williams and, you know, hit him or something? I mean, they give you guys bats...

Brian O'Neill (NYCNative), Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hey guy, I don't hate numbers, I hate nerds. >:(

Numbers don't show intangibles like clutchness and team chemistry. Want to know why Jeter's your MVP this year in the AL? Look how clutch he is. No need to look at numbers for that, numbers don't tell it. Every stellar defensive play he makes and every at bat he takes tells the story: he's a leader, a captain. He's simply a winner. : )

John Kruk, Thursday, 4 May 2006 22:51 (nineteen years ago)

Ha Ha Brian, no. If anything, Mitch made me sit up and take notice that something was wrong. It hurt a lot when he hit me, though. : (

"i don't know how it is in other towns but down here fat chance of finding a momus record,"

What would you do with it once you found it?

(I knew who Eddy and Raggett were before coming here. I didn't know who Drew was.)

js (honestengine), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:37 (nineteen years ago)

Jeepers, JS, how'd you know who I was? (That may sound flippant but I honestly have no idea how in the world I'm known or not, so I'm constantly surprised -- the amount of people asking if I was Ned from ILX or elsewhere at Terrastock and EMP was crazy!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:42 (nineteen years ago)

Ned, you've single-handedly created 12% of the content on the Internets! That's pretty impressive!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:49 (nineteen years ago)

ILXers i had heard of before i came here: Drew Daniel, Mark Sinker & stirmonster.

jed_ (jed), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:54 (nineteen years ago)

I write about music, ergo I rely on AMG a fair amount (too much?).

js (honestengine), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I hadn't wanted to ask but I was wondering from where Ned was famous too. AMG? Do you do a radio show, Ned?

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

Wasn't N/A in Empire of the Sun? Spielberg>Bjork, nerds.

Huk-L (Huk-L), Friday, 5 May 2006 00:58 (nineteen years ago)

i also actually recognized ned's name from AMG also.

I'll be meeting Drew Daniel for the first time tonight, but I doubt either of us will refer to it as a "FAP".

There are many ways to skin the fame cat, all of them inaccurate. In terms of length-of-Wikipedia-entry fame, John Darnielle has the longest dick to wave, followed by me, followed by Matmos, followed by Ned Raggett (just three lines, and just a "stub", alas).

Measured by Google Fight, Momus narrowly beats Matmos, but the Greek God and the lava lamp may be skewing the results. A John Darnielle v Momus fight sees me massively winning, and a John Darnielle v Nick Currie fight sees an even more massive win for me. Or someone else with my name. A Mountain Goats v Momus fight shows massively more references out there to mountain goats than Momuses, but of course we know the internet has a lot of goats on it.

Before ILX, I'd definitely heard of Mountain Goats, Matmos, and Momus. If you said the names "Chuck Eddy" and "Ned Raggett" to me, I'd probably have gone "Wait, I know that name," but it'd take me a second before I realized they were music critics whose reviews I'd read in SPIN and AMG, respectively. But I did recognize, when I first started posting here, several Pitchfork writers, like Nitsuh, Mark R, and Schreiber himself. Maybe Matos, too, from when he used to freelance for the Chicago Reader.

This aren't actually household names, are they? Except maybe for the Stooges, but I don't think joining it in 2003 makes anyone particularly famous.

1. I remember being evicted from the Camden Monarch one Tuesday night at midnight and wandering down towards Kentish Town in the hopeless quest for an illegally open boozer. The only light was from the few streelamps and we were soon lost in a labyrinth of backstreets. We emerged onto an eerily silent main road and –lo and behold- waiting for us around an enclave of shuttered buildings was an Irish pub with wide open doors, a halo of light and melancholy Irish Country and Western music. We sat down at a booth unable to believe our luck and as we got slowly paralytic on cold beer, nostalgically talked about the old days, heady with our unexpected escape from a dreary walk home.
2. On a nightmarishly drunk Friday night trawl of Soho pubs, an Irish girl led me by the hand through narrow, cobbled backstreets to a Casino entrance, past the bouncers and through a series of rooms occupied by sweating toffs in bow ties, losing money around dimly-lit and cramped roulette wheels. I realised I was probably in trouble as I staggered in pursuit of her, but we headed through a concealed entrance to an ornate upstairs room, with 18th Century paintings of prancing horses and waiting staff who brought pints of lager to our table as we lounged in gilt-backed chairs. The room was deserted apart from me and her and the drinks were dirt cheap. I woke up in her flat in a high rise in Notting Hill the next morning and left immediately. Despite carefully placing it in my wallet the night before, I had lost the membership card I’d filled out for the casino.

Both of these pubs were ideal for a further visit, but although I have tried to retrace my steps again and again when sober I have never even found the streets that lead to them. Do you have any similar experiences of boozers that simply aren’t there in the cold light of day?

Oh, yeah. Definitely The Clientele.
