I Love Music
ILXOR.com
For the uninitiated, this message board can be an uninviting place. Threads are often filled with obscure Web slang, vicious flaming, and know-it-all 'tude. But it's also an amazing place to learn about music, both new and old. Fierce debate takes up the bulk of the bandwidth, often leading to some of the most intelligent music talk around (many posters are music critics). Last year's long-running thread on Sri Lanka-born rapper M.I.A., to pick one example, was worthy of a grad-school seminar.

When did iTunes become a Web site?

I would like to semi-seriously suggest taking ilxor.com offline for a week in response. Actually, I would like to seriously suggest it but I know people will point and laugh at me if I do.

ROFFLES: Fans of dance music and groups like SCISSOR SISTERS will love Fluxblog.org

well, the trolling part is accurate anyway.

We're dying for a Talking Heads reunion, but we'd be bummed if it took Byrne away from this fascinating monthly show.

How many ways is this stupid?

1) Talking Heads did reunite for the HOF induction show, and it was extremely underwhelming.
2) David Byrne still tours regularly, without disrupting his apparently grueling radio schedule.
3) At any rate, Byrne plays TH songs in concert, and quite well (and undoubtedly fresher-sounding than they would sound in a TH reunion setting).
4) "No Talking, Just Heads" shows how much the erstwhile Tom Tom Clubbers bring to the table.

erklie (erklie), Friday, 19 May 2006 16:39 (nineteen years ago)

i think we should lock ilm to non regs!

Crazy talk. Their reunion was great.

Maybe it was the blatant desperation of the Just Heads era that colored my perception of the event. There's only so much once can take of Chris Frantz mugging for the camera.

this is my treatment for Fluxblog's New York Times Magazine cover:

Perpetua standing with shirt untucked, chunky headphones around his neck. Supplicating themselves on the ground before him, tearing at his pants, are M.I.A., Annie, and Eleanor Friedenberger, all scantily dressed. Perpetua gives a "what, me worry?" shrug to the camera.

Vicious flaming? I really don't see much of that here. But perhaps I am one of the uninitiated ones and can't understand the flaming due to my inability to process all the complex acronyms like "otm" and "lol".

90% of the 'vicious flaming' on ILM seem to come from a dozen or so regulars who have grudges that go back 3-5 years.

oh you guys. most of the people who actually bother to go to the links in that article are going to be more like the average ilmer (nu, old or otherwise) than a lot of you want to admit. even in entertainment weekly, who do you think reads something about a board full of music writers and thinks "hey cool!"?

(of course whether ilm wants more average ilmers is a separate, more existential issue.)

it'd be interesting to hear if there's any traffic effect at all.

Additionally, on ILM, anyone is able to communicate directly with his or her favorite rapper or R&B singer just by starting a thread about that person. A typical entry might read: "Pharel, I love you peace keep IT UP YOU ARE THE BETST if u r ever inb town call me UP!"

Another excellent feature of the site is the YSI? option, where, if you're looking for a particular album - even one that isn't set to be released for 2 months - all you have to do is throw a simple "YSI?" in a thread and it will be posted there for your enjoyment!

Now back to Stephen King's hilarious cultural ranting with "The Pop of King."

i've lurked here for a long time ,and I've always admired all your musical knowledge ,but you are the biggest bunch of smug self-satisfied no-it-alls sometimes. i think it's a shame because you waste your chance to share your enthusiasm by shooting down others. that's all.

I think that, in order to show they are ILM material, all newbies should either
1) be required to purchase all the new Can remasters
or
2) receive the new Can remasters as a premium and be requireed to submit their opinion on them

Sons Of The Redd Desert (Ken L), Monday, 22 May 2006 13:26 (nineteen years ago)

I am very much in favour of some sort of "Jeopardy"-style entrance exam. Like "Jeopardy", we will need people to go from city to city and host the open call events. Who will volunteer?

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Monday, 22 May 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

What do Can remasters have to do with ILM?

I've never worked in a record store, but I've had friends who did and who showed me the quiz you have to complete as part of your application. I remember one of the questions was "Name an independent label and then name five bands on that label."

Yes, and two days later we (OK, I) lost our domain name!

I just spent a minute and a half trying to figure out what pun I was missing in "literaute" before noticing that it was an accidental post.

i think it's a shame because you waste your chance to share your enthusiasm by shooting down others.

I've never seen any sort of internet-based form of communication that isn't at least partially based on shooting people down that isn't a front for pedophiles. If someone is constantly singing your praises on the internet, he's probably hoping you're fourteen.
