Just a few hours to go, so let's start here.

I've been backstage in Athens all week, and have live-blogged a preview (and predictions) directly from the final dress rehearsal.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but there's no Kate Ryan. Boo!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:39 (nineteen years ago)

Not very subtle voting instructions:

http://www.furanes.net/ebm/romania.jpg

Or Ukraine, I suppose, as I heart her.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

Oh Edward, we can but hope.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:54 (nineteen years ago)

in the betting (off Ladbrokes): Swedish Carola remains your 3/1 favourite, but beneath her movements are being made. Anna Vissi has now drifted to 9/2, having been as strong as 5/2 favourite in recent weeks. Romania are clear third favourites at 5/1, while there have been hyooge moves in the market for Lordi and Russia, who both find themselves at 6/1 - I vaguely remember Lordi having been 33/1 at one point. Bosnia have also drifted slightly, 13/2. The UK are at 10/1, with Germany and Ukraine both 16/1. Ukraine were 125/1 before the semi-final. Other than that, not much change else where. I still remain convinced that Latvia each-way at 80/1 is a very good idea.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

i'm hoping the russia in immigration will do their work! ahaha

nique (nique), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

I have a hard time voting for an unknown ukrainian when poor Ani Lorak is stil out there.

Plus, there's this from her bio: "Tina Karol is, perhaps, the only young Ukrainian singer who has managed to combine in herself seemingly incompatible things: the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian army, peace-keeping, a meteoric musical career and an ingratiating smile…" (Of course, the fact that her real name is Tatiana Liberman is not mentioned.)

Ack!

pleased to mitya (mitya), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:07 (nineteen years ago)

The best long-shot bet might well be for the Lithuanian middle-managers (I heard 150/1 yesterday?) DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON LATVIA! Sweden is a poor bet, as there are rumours of her voice packing up - but Carola's team are right little spinners, and she could be just Saving Herself. Germany at 16/1 are also superb odds - I'd say Top Three Cert.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:09 (nineteen years ago)

I've been tinkering with my predictions for ages now, and I'll never be right, but I'm going to try to do it, since you did, Mike!

1. Romania - Similar to last year's song but BETTER, MIT KEY CHANGE. Let's hope the rubbish stage doesn't squash it to death. Oh god, this is just wishful thinking isn't it.
2. Bosnia - Properly _classy_. The "Lane Moje" effect, definitely.
3. Finland. I personally think it's rubbish. Wig Wam didn't win last year, and I don't see why this will this year, but I hope it hoovers up the "this contest's crap, let's slash the seats" vote.
4. Greece. They've been dead consistent lately, and the home-town thingo, cf Athena two years ago. Also, Teh Gays love Anna Vissi.
5. Germany. Buzz! Buzz! A bit of a "grower". If this had gone through semis, I'd say "maybe winner", as people would have heard it twice..
6. Sweden. Rubbish song. BWO would have walked this. Not a patch on "Love Isn't Love/Framling" is it now.
7. Ukraine. My god, this is great on the stage. The beat is a bit intrusive, but GREAT VOICE.
8. Russia. The mullet is unsightly, the song sounds a lot like "Lonely No More" by Rob Thomas, harumph, piano gimmick, neighbourly votes feh feh feh.
9. Croatia. Horny blokes heart Severina! Love the song too.
10. Lithuania. A crime against humanity. How could this do well when last year's sublime "Little By Little" came LAST?
11. UK. Just SOUNDS like a #11.
12. Denmark. If only it weren't _after_ Germany.
13. Ireland. While I despise it, I can see its appeal. It's still awful, though.
14. FYROM - Dull song, but with the Serbs out, this will hoover.
15. Armenia. he's cute. Song much improved, but still a bit ropey.
16. Malta. Better than it deserves, due to Fab having some recognition.
17. Latvia. Another mess. Possibly the worst "song" in the bunch, apart from Lithuania.
18. Turkey. No, BBC, this didn't win the semifinals. Someone is having you on.
19. Israel. Annoying enough to do well but I'm kind of hoping its duff place in the draw erases this chance as it's rubbish.
20. Norway. Cannot see this picking up that many votes.
21. Spain. Not nagging enough.
22. Switzerland. Can't even remember it!
23. Moldova. Dan Balan next time, pls!
24. France. Whatever.

edward o (edwardo), Saturday, 20 May 2006 14:12 (nineteen years ago)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:38 (nineteen years ago)

Go Lordi.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:49 (nineteen years ago)

Gah, I have to go out and will miss Lordi. Someone Youtube their performance please.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 20 May 2006 17:52 (nineteen years ago)

The east euro mafia are bound to vote one of their own(prob Ukraine maybe russia). But enough metal heads may vote(if they actually watch) to get Lordi in top 10.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:01 (nineteen years ago)

ed otm above that the Swedish song is rub, at least compared to its place among the favourites.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:02 (nineteen years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT THING?

(i.e. welcome to Athens!)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:03 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to pfunkboy: it's not to do with any mafia, it's the large number of Slav etc countries, I suppose. Lobby Eurovision to be given English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish slots like in FIFA etc, and you'd place higher prob. ;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:04 (nineteen years ago)

That thing is a giant orange-like metal hive where Lordi rest between performances.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:05 (nineteen years ago)

I may at some point upstage have intimated that the staging of this year's contest was a bit rubbish. That opening has, quite frankly, hushed my mouth.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:06 (nineteen years ago)

I'm betting that Finland will do quite badly.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Here's Elena Paparizou. As is the winner's privilege, she is miming.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

I don't want the uk to win. I hate that song. I just wish we could be relegated!

I just watch it out of habit since i've always watched at least the results part since i was about 5.
Its pretty hard to tell who will win though. Its Eurovision-it always has shocks.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:09 (nineteen years ago)

Seriously, the staging thus far really is fucking stunning.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:10 (nineteen years ago)

AND WE'RE AWAY!

With... Switzerland. The night has just got a hell of a lot less amazing.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh I couldn't resist putting a mighty £8 on Bosnia etc at 8.8 -- as ed said, it's properly classy. Recent odds movements down to 8.6 mean I could trade out for an ASSURED PROFIT of 20p yay!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:11 (nineteen years ago)

At last I've found out what this reminds me of (at least the chorus): Koreana's 1988 "Hand in Hand".

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:12 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova's songwriter apparently wrote "Dschingis Khan"!?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova - this year's backmarker?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:15 (nineteen years ago)

She will get the pervs vote.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:16 (nineteen years ago)

hahahaha a scooter

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's like 9% too slow innit? NEW GENRE alert!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

Moldova is brilliant! "Hey Loca, Give me give me your boca". What a chorus.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

They lost my vote. She put clothes back on..

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:18 (nineteen years ago)

SCOOTER MAKE THE EUROVISION! Sort of.

Israel. This will be the first tea-break of the evening for much of Europe.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Norwegian commentator: "first white suit of the evening!"

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:19 (nineteen years ago)

Moldovan bloke looked like Sezer off Big Brother.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

ooh he's singing a bit sharp isn't he? Nerves? :/

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

xpost to bloody swygart: gin break

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:20 (nineteen years ago)

It's the first piano of the evening!

Christ, this man is a twat. Why all the swaying? Marvel at his mediocre footwork!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:21 (nineteen years ago)

I'm just going to c+p the following statement for most of the entries.

This song is utter wank.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

And that's the first miming of 'listening' by cupping the ears of the evening.

HANDCLAP BREAKDOWN! Where did that come from? Why did that come from?

Welcome to the semi-finals, kids.

Next: Latvia. I didn't put money on them, in the end.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:22 (nineteen years ago)

Can I be the 1st to say ITS THE FLYING PICKETS!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:23 (nineteen years ago)

HE'S READING THE LYRICS! CHEAT! FILTH!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Tuomas at the back?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

spot the grown up milky bar kid at the back

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Best! Act! Ever!

LATVIA MUST WIN!!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:24 (nineteen years ago)

Is that Tuomas at the back?

spot the grown up milky bar kid at the back

HAHAHAHAHAHA

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:25 (nineteen years ago)

they have a robot

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

I'm always wondering how much our commentator (who's quite popular as such by the way, and will forever be remembered as Eurovision Jostein) has picked from own brain, and how much from press releases etc. Did your respective commentators mention "first acappella ever in ESC"?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Dear Christ, I'm glad I didn't back this now.

What is that... thing? Is it specifically there to prove that is possible to have less crazy legs than the feller with the hair?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

They just won the robot vote.
x-post

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Whats the running order?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:26 (nineteen years ago)

Ole - yes.

And here's Norway. Elves. Ooh.

pfunk - look a few posts up, it'll be there.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

It's a peroxide Eliza Dushku!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:27 (nineteen years ago)

romania @ 12, lordi @ 17
x-post

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:28 (nineteen years ago)

I'm guessing we'll get points from Sweden and Iceland -- it uses the latteryear Slav trick of local tonality or something. Erm.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

This is many people's outside tip. Distinct lack of spectacle (THE DANCERS HAVE JUST CROSSED SIDES!), but the song's decent enough. Lots of big high notes, and the backing singers are probably the most effective we've seen thus far. (THE BACKING SINGERS WALK PAST EACH OTHER!)

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:29 (nineteen years ago)

Your leader thus far, and Spain are next, so they'll be staying that way for at least another three minutes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

those weren't mere VIOLINS by the way, they were HARDANGER FIDDLES!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

ahh yes I see it. Thanks Will.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:30 (nineteen years ago)

Yep, I liked Norway.

Time for Las Ketchup. Who have a song WITHOUT a chorus[!]

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

they can't sing live at all.....

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

There's some dancers, and they're wearing football socks. Erm...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:31 (nineteen years ago)

ESC2006 MEME #94 - OFFICE FURNITURE

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

"dooti fri dooti fri dooti fri" is NOT a chorus, ladies. Sorry.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

America sez: BAH

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

I thought this was a bit lackluster weeks ago, but the opening riff *did* trigger feelgood stuff now, so I'll have to upgrade it.

Apart from some more sharp singing ugh

xpost wbs you claimed SITTING DOWN as early as Thursday innit?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

I'm glad we've not seen much of the dancers thus far. They are, quite possibly, making this even worse.

If there's any Spaniards out there - what exactly was your country thinking?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

oh god... another fucking key change.

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Spain sound like they've never sung this song before and never want to again

justsomegalthatsallhahak, Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

Ole - there's sitting down, and then there's OFFICE FURNITURE. Those probably set them back about £80 at Ryman's.

Here's Malta.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

David - can you see any of the streams in the US? I'd assume the German and Dutch ones could work for you...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

I dunno how you can watch it. I saw (not heard) Spain and I feel physically ill.

Griff Sheridan (Griff Sheridan), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

The Dutch Terry Wogans just said "it's as if they're all having their period today"...

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

what? malta not entering a chunky lady singing a ballad?

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

Ole - yes.

Nog commentator on Malta: "sounds like found in trashcan outside ABBA studio in 1974" -- did you have that? Is it totally scripted?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Spain know a western european country cant win so dont make any effort at all. Nil Points.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:36 (nineteen years ago)

Now this is both sharp and flat in rapid alternation. Heard worse songs, but he's killing it!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

This poor lad looks several years older than he actually is, I'd imagine. Unless he doesn't. And my word, he really does not have the voice for this. Were Bobby George commenting on the vocals, he'd be saying that his backing singers were beating 'im up. I feel for the poor lad, this one's going nowhere but the semis next year.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, William, I'm watching via Eurovision's site! I was BAHing Las Ketchup's chair work, FWIW.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

what's with all the crappy singing, are the stage monitors busted?

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:37 (nineteen years ago)

And here's probably the first of the big guns - Germany.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

OK, Germany next. Pandering to the American vote hohoho.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

If you have digital you can press red and get lyrics and translations according to terry. I bet that doesnt apply to Telewest bah.
I'll have a try.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:38 (nineteen years ago)

I think you're being a bit harsh on Spain. I was entertained, for the first half anyway.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

I seem to be a minute or two behind (no shocker there) - I'm just seeing the Germany pre-performance intro.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Stage monitors: That's actually happened before John. A more likely explanation, though, is this contest having lower status than Idol quarterfinals in some countries.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:39 (nineteen years ago)

Ok I do have it BUT theres a bruce springsteen live concert i can watch too. So tempting.

I don't belong on this thread do i?

haha these lyrics make it even worse.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

BBC stream is starting to go to pieces. Which is annoying, as this is probably our clear leader at this point.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

the German entry is not too bad actually....

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

N.B. by 'clear leader' I mean that it's the first entry that has pedal steel. Her voice ain't stunning either, but the backing means she can get away with it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

I dare say it's very good!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:41 (nineteen years ago)

(I'm easy.)

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

Denmark next - decent, but possibly outgunned.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

germany the winner SHURELY

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

GERMANY MUST WIN.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:42 (nineteen years ago)

why are they not twisting?

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:43 (nineteen years ago)

Remember how Futurama was set up by Fry falling into a cryogenics tub then coming out a few years later? Now, imagine that happening to Bonnie Tyler.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

TWIST DAMN IT

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:44 (nineteen years ago)

Germany was rubbish. You should get nul points automatically for singing in English.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Who is thos "O Smarty" theyre singing about?
Or is he irish O'Smarty?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

And there's your first breakdance of the evening. Moldova don't count. Because they just don't.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

I just made the Bonnie Tyler comparison to the mister. Breakdancing! It's all a bit 80s-tastic (see also Maltese dude)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:45 (nineteen years ago)

Pfunk - you don't need explanations when you have a man who can't quite spin on his head.

And here's Russia. I still don't get quite why this is so fancied.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

MULLET ALERT!

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Oh look, he has his voting number on his vest! How... efficient.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:46 (nineteen years ago)

Or why *he* is so fancied. Sex symbol in Russia, apparently. He has the greatest mullet thus far.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

guh

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

oh someone HAD to mention the mullet

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

This is some heinous Richard Marx / Billy Squier shit.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

"flesh on my flesh bone on my bone"

Please sing in your national language!

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

bone on my bone indeed

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Cor, random person popping out of the piano lid! Beats your poxy breakdancers any day,

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

Denmark misses point in inconspicuously spectacular Danish way!

The voting number is a fantastic touch. Otherwise rub.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:48 (nineteen years ago)

backside air!

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

Has intentionally throwing the mic stand to the floor ever looked anything other than a bit rubbish?

He's making a better fist of this than he did in the semi OH NO BUNNY HOP ARGH

No-one in the build-up has pointed out how similar he looks to Billy Pearce when he smiles.

I really hope he doesn't win. But he just might...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

This is just awful. Have the Russians lost it totally?

Griff Sheridan (Griff Sheridan), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:49 (nineteen years ago)

F!Y!R!O!M! If nothing else, better than they were last year, but it'd be hard not to be...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

I was surprised by how solid Denmark were, actually. Still can't see the point of Russia, though.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:50 (nineteen years ago)

And the backing's too quiet. There is a definite sense of things not quite going to plan here.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

Sharp singing again??? Someone *should* examine the stage monitors...

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:51 (nineteen years ago)

FYROM... interesting.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Shit kicking, but not in the good way.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:52 (nineteen years ago)

Long legs. And lyrics about Shakira and Beyonce.

And breakdancing! This year's drums, surely!

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

Those are really really good legs.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

And there's a man bottling out of doing the worm. Elena herself is giving it a good old go, but factors may be conspiring against her - really, that kicking is soooo half-arsed, though. Expect it'll do better than everyone expects, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

It just makes me sad. I wish I had legs that allowed hot pants.

marianna (mariannapm), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

And now, YOUR third favourites, Romania!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

ROMANIA! this song is so good I get a stiffy

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

"It's a national sport, nightclubs." Wogan's on surprisingly good form here.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:54 (nineteen years ago)

Oof he's off as well! Or am I just unusually critical tonight?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

Erm, this is so highly fancied WHY exactly?

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:55 (nineteen years ago)

i was just thinking wogan's been quite restrained so far this year

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Will the national grid have an increase as the middle class housewives across england go make a cup of tea when Lordi are on?

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

This is my first Woganless Eurovision. It's just not the same.

Cathy (Cathy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:56 (nineteen years ago)

Romania must win! Just for that high-pitched yodelly thing!

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

It's very Romanian, I'll give it that. Discount disco. That "Kylie" song did it better though.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Those who have watched the video for this will be disappointed to note there are no snakes, and there's further shit backing dancers, but the song itself - and Mihai's performance of it - are proper making up for it. He has also made the stage go black with orange lights - it's a very good look. We may be seeing the winner right here.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:57 (nineteen years ago)

Not for the first time tonight, let's imagine if Sweden had put BWO in. It's the ad break, so, y'know.

And after the break: Bosnia. We're into the meat of the contest now.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

half way through... have to say pretty disimpressed so far...

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

I just realised the 1st eurovision I ever saw was bucks fizz winning when i was 8. And I remember Nicole of Germany winning in 1982. Back in the days eurovision winners got to no1 in the uk.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:58 (nineteen years ago)

Romania will NOT place higher than Sweden (or Ukraine, for that matter)!

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

"Eurovision" on BBC Player is rather ace!

Are you having fun !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 18:59 (nineteen years ago)

I think Sweden's chances are actually improved so far, w/crap singing from some others. If there's anything wrong with equipment, Carola is teh pro and could turn it to her adv.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:00 (nineteen years ago)

as a swede, I hope Carola bombs badly.

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

first ballad of the show..

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

Bosnia Bloke in White Suit ! looks a right plonker

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

I hope Carola bombs badly

As a Nog, I do too.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

I hate ballads.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:02 (nineteen years ago)

So much for different musics etc! Dynamics of chorus just as Norwegian entry.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:03 (nineteen years ago)

Again, making the stage go black and using the spotlights - a good idea. If this wins (and it might - it's that different from what's gone before that it must have a solid chance) expect a lot of people to notice for next year.

His voice is also really good, and the pacing is dead on - slick, polished, top 10 bare minimum.

And now - Lithuania.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, but he can sing.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

Hehe here's lithuania. I hope this wins if Lordi don't.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:04 (nineteen years ago)

ANother change of pace.

BOOING! THERE IS BOOING! Somewhere backstage, Silvia Night strokes a white cat.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

This is one of the very few times since we got rid of the TV that I've wished we still had one.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:05 (nineteen years ago)

Is that the Latvian robot on the video staircase?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

oh fuck this

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

This HAS to win! Greatest Thing EVER. I actually mean it this time.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

btw the Silvia booing was apparently bcz of her swearing loudly on tv about Greek organizers, footage of which was shown on primetime news

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Gotta love the david brent dance.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:06 (nineteen years ago)

Is this the ComedyVision?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

not subtle

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

This will do a lot better than it deserves to. Also benefits from not needing any particular technical brilliance, just a ton of volume. Which it gets and then some.

A CHORUS OF BOOS!

Next - C'MON DAZ!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

haha the crowd hate it.
Go lithuania!!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

pash i believe there are online streams -- swygart and other to rescue abt where (i watch real tv)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:07 (nineteen years ago)

Chav Daz up next

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

THANK YOU FOR BOOING

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:08 (nineteen years ago)

I bet Daz has Vanilla Ice and LL Cool J albums in his collection

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:09 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone across europe is probably laughing as much at Daz as we do with Lithuania.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

No no, for once in abt a thousand years I think you should actually not be ashamed! This makes me grin greatly! Best so far according to me.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

i'm hearing this for the first time... and it's utter wank.. and to think he was slagging all the previous UK entries... twat.

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Please don't vote for us anyone. PLEASE!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Annie (the musical) + Black Eyed Peas = whatEVer

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Benny Hill skoolgurls and Vanilla Ice

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Everyone across europe is probably laughing as much at Daz as we do with Lithuania.

I know I am

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

This is what life is like here in England

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

Daz OK in context of what's gone on elsewhere. He's winning in the other half of my living room where sexy schoolgirls > everything.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:10 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/eurovision
http://www.ndrtv.de/grandprix

are two. There's also the Dutch one, but I've lost the URL for that.

Yes, Martian. Yes, he does.

Nice exchanging of stonewashed for yellow leather Jacket, there. He won't win, but this is better than we've been in a while. The paper tossing backfired badly, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

I'd have more time for the song if he was about 15 years younger.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Daz really thinks he is cool !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:11 (nineteen years ago)

Bloody huge reception for that BUT NOW IT'S GREECE and you can hear the cheering over the interval graphics. Possibly not accidental, that.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

Tmay have been put on, but it seemed more true joyish amongst participants than most others really.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:12 (nineteen years ago)

I can't help but wonder why Belgium wants to join every year? I soooort of liked Kate Ryan's song until I saw her performance: it was just extremely mediocre.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

The audience are singing along. Greece really, really want this again next year, don't they?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

power ballad = won't win

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:13 (nineteen years ago)

there are a few tears here i can tell you that

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Is this Greece's answer to Mariah Carey crossed with Cher

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

can we have the chorus once more ?

justsomegal, Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

And if it weren't for that audience... this wouldn't really be in the frontrunners. Her singing is really lacking in oomph, and the backing is too quiet again. Seriously, she's showing the technical acumen of the grey-haired feller from Lithuania here.

There's the first fireworks, though.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:14 (nineteen years ago)

Bless her, it's not for lack of trying on her part. She's so *emotional* (song is pish, and no amount of emoting or dishevelled wind-machine-assisted posing is going to alter that)

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Bonnie Tyler

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Did Steinman write this? I fear its so overblown it could win.
UP NEXT LORDI!!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Can't remember, did Shakira qualify?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

The performance doesn't merit it, but for the audience reaction you kind of want Greece to have this again next year...

BUT NOW - THE DAY OF ROCKENING ARRIVES!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:15 (nineteen years ago)

Lordi ! next: Klingons !

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

HAT!

HAT!

HAT!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

Alice Cooper

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:16 (nineteen years ago)

\m/

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

It's the Arockalypse!!! Greatest lyric ever!!!

This is so Poison by Alice Cooper.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

the day of rockening!

lolz

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

LORDI SMASH! To much wailing and gnashing of teeth from mediocre journalists! MORE FIREWORKS!

HE'S COMBED HIS HAIR! MR LORDI HAS A SIDE PARTING!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

This is actually pish, isn't it? Arockalypse, Day of Rockening, classic yes, but the song = rub.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

with wings!

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Haha so it is (Poison).

I feel this wbs comment is too great to be forgotten in the semifinals thread:

> IS LORDI'S KEYBOARD PLAYER A GIRL?????
> DEATH TO FALSE METAL!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Better still, the 'thine' isn't sticking out as much as it did in the semi.

Tragically, the wings are not emblazoned with the Finnish flag. AND IT'S THE PYROTECHNIC GUITARS!

WINNER!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

The mix sounds less flattering today dunnit?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Rock and Role ANgels Bring Thine Hard Rock Hallelujah!

Awseome!!!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

It was fuinnier the first time round.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:19 (nineteen years ago)

Are they booing?

Next - Uck Rhine, as Sakis pronounced it in the semi.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

(I think Daz will do well, btw. It wasn't half as bad as could have been.)

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

I like this girl

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

ah yes there's Shak

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Those really are some lovely boots she has.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ukraine! I've really taken a shine to this one. Shakira but with less theatrical vocal stylings.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

Shakiraclone will win.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:20 (nineteen years ago)

(which is a good thing)

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

I also very much LIKE this girl.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:21 (nineteen years ago)

Shakira but with less theatrical vocal stylings.

Still?

I find the beat a bit 1d and harsh.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Nice body crap music

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

And here's the skipping. This is greeted with whistles.

First thumbs-up of the evening!

And here's the slow bit. This may be the one part of the song where she doesn't sing the chorus...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

haha did I say LESS theatrical?

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:22 (nineteen years ago)

Ha, I doubt I'm even getting 28k out here in the wilds, I'll check out youtube at work next week.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

top 5

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

I should've put a tenner on this like I was going to.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

And there's that gratuitous long note, which fails to elicit many cheers from the crowd, oddly.

The tambourines ruin it.

The last two have definitely had whistles. Are the Greeks starting to get a bit worried that they might not win this?

ANd here's France. More tea/gin.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:23 (nineteen years ago)

no this is actually a pretty good song

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

and she has a nice voice

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

Say all you want about eastern European mafia, they simply have the better tunes.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

France girls flat.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:24 (nineteen years ago)

of course she is off key, too. this is getting ridicilous.

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Fucking ballads.
Terry says the french put out the same song every year.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

Wow France is poor. Lager break for me.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:25 (nineteen years ago)

She CANNOT get ONE of those long notes right!

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

ouch..

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

Arrrrggggghhhhh, my poor ears.

dmun drive-in (dmun), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

France girls flat.

Only abt half the time. The rest sharp.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

This is The Sundays sung in French

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

France try doggedly to reclaim ESC to chanson roots

The Nog commentator? Cos this is *exactly* what our Dutch guys said.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:26 (nineteen years ago)

No, that was me.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

No real high point in it. It's similar to (but better than) Israel in that regard. Won't make top 10, but equally ought to perform better than they did last year. Also, the crowd failed to realise that it had finished.

Next - Croatia. Last of the dark horses.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:27 (nineteen years ago)

hop hop hopp

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

Nog comm claims *this* is the famed Turbo Folk -- is it?

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:28 (nineteen years ago)

If this wins, expect LEGS & CO headlines everywhere tomorrow.

One cannot deny that they are giving this hell.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

could be! It has folk elements from Prague to Kabul in it..

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

this woman in the red dress doesn't look real, like a studio generated puppet

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:29 (nineteen years ago)

Did you say LEGZ

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

so... how about that private porn video, severina

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

Ireland is up. WORST song tonight.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

AND THERE GOES THE DRESS dear god I think I can see her pants.

Croatia are absolutely hammering this. And Wogan's talking all over it. More cheers than boos, though, definitely... could go close.

And here's Brian Kennedzzzz.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Nog comm actively pushing this. Haet haet haet.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:31 (nineteen years ago)

Every Ireland song is a cry for help.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that this is a shitty ballad.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

When I say worst song I mean worst face contortions. And worst vocal whine. Worst attempt at heartfelt authenticity crap.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

gayest backing singer dancing evvah.

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

OMG I am a genius.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

This song is bucket wrenching AOR b-shit

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:32 (nineteen years ago)

He gets down on one knee. I'm now crying out loud and banging on the walls.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

Still he's pro enough to not give shit abt equipment problems, if that is the reason for all the crap singing. Arse.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:33 (nineteen years ago)

This is the third or fourth 'Father Dick Byrne moment' of the evening.

So syrupy, it's... urgh. However, does a better job of it than the other soapy ballads did, and as such will score. May well threaten the top ten.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

If pressed for one thing I like most abt this shit, twould be his pronunciation of TUFF

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

"Ein Bißchen Frieden" + "A Child is Born" = "Every Song is a Cry for Love".

Colin Meeder (Mert), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

vomitttttttttttttt

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

JAYSIS BRIAN, WHAT'RE YOU DOING WITH THAT NOTE AT THE END THERE?

And now, YOUR betting frontrunner - it's Carola! Crowd noise again audible over the interval graphics.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Sweden. Like a military operation on Eurovision.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:35 (nineteen years ago)

Bonnie Tyler set to dance-trance-pop

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

She looks like she's gonna crawl through the tv screen and try to bite my nose off or something.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:36 (nineteen years ago)

In what way is this better than Finland?

dmun drive-in (dmun), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

the chorus sounds a bit like winner takes it all

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

a bit?

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

Old trooper knows technique, gets useless material, hopefully fools noone. Fuck, I want Norway to beat this.

Yeah Colin, Carola = teh überscary ALWAYS

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:37 (nineteen years ago)

dmun - FLAGS. obviously.

This has that much welly that it's sounding like a winner all of a sudden. Plus, Latvia's robot makes that cloak look sensible.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

this song is so yawning.........

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:38 (nineteen years ago)

Turkey! I'm the only one who liks this.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

licks. AND likes.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

Here's Turkey. This is accompanied by an interval graphics package composed of the great Greek thinkers. These two facts are in no way related.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

turkish blondes suck a lot...... aahahaha

nique (nique), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

wbs hahahahaha!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

Fab Donna Summer verses. Chorus could be better.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:40 (nineteen years ago)

She looks like a bloke dragged up as Gwen Stefani. Horrible tattoo.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

how bad is this...The Turkish boy band clone dancers and sexy pole dancer singer

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

The volume of the backing tracks could well be an important factor here. Turkey's is dead on, FYROM's definitely wasn't.

Yes, that's Greek fans cheering a Turkish entry. We may be in for a surprise here.

Her shout out to the crowd gets response too... and now she's spontaneously broken into English.

This may have been the each-way value after all...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas thought she was hot. I still can't my head around this.
She is a he.

But this song is really really good, sod you all for not hearing it.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:42 (nineteen years ago)

And here we are! Prepare to end with a... reasonably loud noise - it's Armenia!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:43 (nineteen years ago)

Armenia. Which beat Belgium. And Iceland. And Poland. And Monaco.
Un-be-lievable.

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

JAYSIS ANDRE, WHAT'RE YOU DOING WITH THAT ON YOUR HEAD?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Armenia isn't even in Europe!

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Tuomas thought she was hot. I still can't my head around this.

Haha I was about to post exactly same thing.

It's a GIANT GREY SWISS CHEESE!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

is it just me or does he have a horrible accent?

nique (nique), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

who is a more of a plank: brit daz or this plonker on stage now?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

Another one where the backing track is dead on. Such a shame that poor old Andre isn't. And by god, he really, really isn't. If him and Maltese lad were to have a fight, it would be rubbish.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

is it just me or does he have a horrible accent?

Your stream is obviously delayed, the UK was half an hour ago har har.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

he so badly wants to dance like michael jackson

Jack Battery-Pack (Jack Battery-Pack), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Crap strap action. Again. Andre's voice really, really has let the side down, and now I'm off to my mate's girlfriend's house for vote-uss.

And that's that! Lordi are number 17, by the way.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:46 (nineteen years ago)

who are these 2 greek jokers

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

"YOU'RE FANTASTIC!" explodes Sakis at no-one in particular!

Remember - number 17!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

Nana!

naranjito (Koens), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:48 (nineteen years ago)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

Isreal = cruise ship cabaret soul
Latvia = flying pickets
Norway = rather pop
Spain = rather camp
Malta = uptempo nonsense
Germany = goes country
Denmark = send people round the twist
Russia = Richard Marx

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 19:57 (nineteen years ago)

AND THIS IS WHERE THE STORY REALLY STARTS!

Expect teethgnashing over traditional rivalries, yet also reconciliation of ancient foery through the magick of sms!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Blokey presenter has a really horrible suit on.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:00 (nineteen years ago)

Just briefly visiting this thread as I don't have any TV near the computer.

I voted for Bosnia. Beautiful song.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Was that the Brian Kennedy I saw support Suzanne Vega about 17 years ago? I fear it was.

I liked the Van Halen synth stabs in the midst of Lithuania's lunatic chant. I swear the Las Ketchup backing track slowed momentarily about 30sec in. Cheap tapes from Boots, obv.

I was hoping Nana would be introduced by Ronnie Corbett.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

Euro competition.
Cyprus getting 12 points as usual from the......
Fill in the blanks.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:02 (nineteen years ago)

Agreed Geir, but I also voted for UK, which may not have been your fave :)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

LOL. UK always hosts something "modern". I have liked previous UK entries better :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

Er Brigadier, Sir, Cyprus will not get 12 points from anyone for the simple reason that etc.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

dkskdj kdkdjs, Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:05 (nineteen years ago)

But Geir, UK's entry was only about 8 years out of date, instead of the usual 10-15! :)

Finland(metal fans in every country will vote for a laugh to get a top 5 placing)

and Lithuania as outside bet

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

Norman I think they all gatecrashed Eurovision2006 which is full of loads of people.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:08 (nineteen years ago)

I liked the bit of Greek shadow theatre we just saw - it was a nod to It's A Knockout, and there isn't enough of that.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

Why don't Liz Cocteau and Peter Murphy do a Duet and enter next year for the UK?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:09 (nineteen years ago)

sweden sounded like the winner, yes

nique (nique), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

NOW FOR GUESSING WHICH COUNTRIES WILL GET 12 FROM EACH COMING UP

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:10 (nineteen years ago)

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:18 (nineteen years ago)

John Cocktolstoy (John Cocktolstoy), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:22 (nineteen years ago)

Why are Ireland doing so well? They were shite.

ailsa (ailsa), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:23 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, the vote announcers are effortlessly hotter than the performers - I think it's a tradition. It's the foxy librarian effect.

why are the knocked out countries allowed to vote?

Why are they even allowed to exist? Annex them!

There's a floral shirt theme going on with the announcer chaps. Nice.

(Marianna: he was doing OK with his offhand zany thing until the whole "69" business. But that wasn't his fault.)

Now, who are the Brits going to vote for?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:38 (nineteen years ago)

No, the Polish guy was dry and smart.

Armenian woman has a more annoying voice than Fern whatshername.

I can't believe Israel's Luther Vandross album filler performed by Pop Idol failure hasn't garnered any points.

The only way UK can ever win this again is if Guernsey, Rockall, Lindisfarne, Orkney and the Isle of Man are allowed to vote.

(Though I think someone did a study and established that you can't really win it just because you have lots of friendly neighbours - the points spread out and it actually requires Europe-wide support to win. Hence Finland.)

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:48 (nineteen years ago)

Finland cannot lose...

Happy with BiH doing well. However, as I said on the long-ago preview thread:

HARD. ROCK. HALLELUJAH.

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Would this be a relegation for the UK if such a thing were allowed? Bottom six, is it?

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:52 (nineteen years ago)

Greek has a strong Rock/Metal culture = 12 points for Lordi

DJ Martian (djmartian), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Turkey makes up for the genocide with 10pts.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:56 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, UK would have been tossed. I say this as a bitter semi-Austrian.

Colin Meeder (Mert), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:57 (nineteen years ago)

There is such a thing as quasi-relegation -- having to play semifinals next year. I believe UK are exempt due to their funding or something though.

Haha now Lordi singer has Sami hat!

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 20:58 (nineteen years ago)

I guess I should play the part of stereotypical Norwegian sore loser though:

Hmph this wd never have happened without Wig Wam paving the way last year grumble.

;)

The Vintner's Lipogram (OleM), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:02 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, I knew the UK were exempt. This is a bit like the worst teams not going down from the Conference because other sides are being demoted for financial reasons. A bit.

I think the UK should be put into administration and forced to play-off against Vatican city-state and Kingston-upon-Hull.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

If we played against Hull, we'd get pwned by Kingmaker.

This would never have been possible without Wig Wam last year.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:08 (nineteen years ago)

Btw. I wonder which charitable cause the Swiss entry was for. It must have been some, at least it sounded like "We Are The World" or "Do They Know It's Christmas".

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 21:11 (nineteen years ago)

No no read the thread Geir, it's "Hand in Hand".

Hopefully you didn't bet much.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 22:21 (nineteen years ago)

Next year, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands, Shetland, Greenland and Åland should all host their own entries. Will make the voting more fair.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Saturday, 20 May 2006 22:29 (nineteen years ago)

No. Then KT Tunstall might represent us. Or worse, Deacon Blue might reform...

I've never really understood why, in recent years, the UK seems to have insisted on handicapping ourselves every time by sending the equivalent of Herford United to play an International fixture.

Once upon a time we used to send established and successful acts like Matt Monro, Kathy Kirby, Sandie Shaw, Cliff Richard, Lulu, Mary Hopkin, Clodagh Rogers, New Seekers, Olivia Newton John, The Shadows, Brotherhood Of Man and Lynsey De Paul - and consequently (and probably predictably) we almost invariably used to do reasonably well....

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Saturday, 20 May 2006 23:59 (nineteen years ago)

No one will touch Eurovision now. Maybe with Lordi winning more "different" types of acts from the norm will enter. If Lordi can win anything can win. Would be good to have a contest where not all acts stick with pop or ballads.

Have a look at Who would you like to see enter Eurovision 2007?

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Sunday, 21 May 2006 16:25 (nineteen years ago)

I suppose Lordi will be at the Donington Monsters Of Rock Festival. Literary.......

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 May 2006 00:16 (nineteen years ago)

It wasn't really a surprise that Lordi won it, especially as Iceland got knocked out at the semi-final stage - did anyone seriously expect the f-word to make it to the final? - it was one of the few songs one could actually remember afterwards (even if its tune was a crossbreed of "Livin' On A Prayer" and Alice Cooper's "Poison") and it was sufficiently different to stand out.

This year saw a definite retreat. Too many indifferent, soppy and tuneless ballads.

Las Ketchup were superb (Xenomania remix Chris Rea's "On The Beach" - "Duty free, duty free, duty freeeeeeee!") but went completely under the heads of the voting dullards.

Lithuania was embarrassing. There's a fine line between "wacky" and "sad" and they overstepped it.

Turkey had a strong verse, an iffy chorus and a huge dull slab of nothing in the middle.

The Latvian accappella entry was genuinely intriguing for the first 40 seconds but then became banal.

The curious thing about the German entry was that, if you strip away the C&W trappings, "No No Never" is a very run-of-the-mill, Diane Warren-style power ballad complete with rhetorical lyric triplets.

Nowhere near as good as 2005. The Norway entry (Wigwam?) last year did a much better job of resuscitating stadium rock than Finland did this year, but obviously they neglected to include the comedy masks and "arockalypse."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:48 (nineteen years ago)

Meanwhile, France and Ireland came out with the same song they've been doing in Eurovision for the last ten years.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:49 (nineteen years ago)

Oh was that Ls Ketchup? That's pretty much where I tuned in.

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 May 2006 07:51 (nineteen years ago)

The tactical voting was even more barefaced than usual - surely no country apart from Russia/Baltic States/ex-Soviet Union countries/Balkan states/Scandies can ever win again.

I thought our entry was absolutely fantastic!

Dr.C (Dr.C), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:27 (nineteen years ago)

As I said on one of the other Eurovision threads, "Teenage Life" was IMO the best British entry since "One Step Further," and both should have done better than they did (and '82 was another political minefield with the Falklands, the Austrian nun winning, etc.).

Saturday must have been the easiest pay cheque Nana Mouskouri has ever worked for.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:32 (nineteen years ago)

Lithuania's song was basically "Vindaloo".

mark grout (mark grout), Monday, 22 May 2006 08:47 (nineteen years ago)

Nowhere near as good as 2005. The Norway entry (Wigwam?) last year did a much better job of resuscitating stadium rock than Finland did this year, but obviously they neglected to include the comedy masks and "arockalypse."

I also have a theory that, for the Southern Europeans, make-up and tights was possibly even more provocative than monster masks.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:06 (nineteen years ago)

Lordi aren't as good as Wig Wam, no, because WIG WAM, as I said on another thread, released a cover of Mel C's execrable "I Turn To YoU" as a single and made it sound GRATE.

I think this is a horrible result, but I'll save it for later.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 22 May 2006 11:08 (nineteen years ago)

what about Poland?
votes in ESC 2006 was false!!!!!!!1

Magda, Tuesday, 23 May 2006 16:47 (nineteen years ago)

I don't even remember this year's Polish entry.

However, two of my three favourite entries (Iceland and Belgium) were knocked out already in the qualifying round. Like I said: We need Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Faroe Islands, Shetland and Åland all to enter next year's competition to bring some justice into ESC again! :)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 17:00 (nineteen years ago)

I don't know what it was about the Eurovision in 2002 but I actually remember every song from it, and I only watched it a few times on video.

That was a pretty good year...... especially the entries from Sweden, Bosnia ("ooh.. there's a sound of music in the broken bell"), UK and of course Latvia :)

JTS (JTS), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 21:58 (nineteen years ago)

Teenage Life (by a 32 year old dickhead) was fucking awful. A true embarrassment.
The worst UK entry ever. I bet the whole of Europe was laughing at the UK when that was on.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:08 (nineteen years ago)

2002 seem to be a bad vintage IMO. The Swedish entry was good (their best in recent years), but the rest were mainly crap. Particularly the Latvian entry, which was one of their worst ever (The Latvian entry is otherwise usually among my favourites)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:16 (nineteen years ago)

One good thing with Lordi winning we might see less ballads.
Unless next year theres a reaction to a metal band winning.

I just hope the UK puts someone decent up for a change.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:25 (nineteen years ago)

Geir, you are mental. 2002 was pretty good. 2003 and 2004 were better, though. 2006 is the worst year since 2000.

edward o (edwardo), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:27 (nineteen years ago)

2006 is the worst year since 2000.
Just because a rock band won for a change?

Probably this year plenty of people who never watched it before tuned in. That has to be good for eurovision. Most of the songs sound the same so maybe more countries will try something else in future. Maybe ireland and france will stop making ballads!

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 23 May 2006 22:36 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's because 2006 had a crapload of shitty songs. I'd name them, but I don't wanna (sound like DJ Martian).
