HELLO iLM !!!!....MY FIRST POST & LIST OF FAVOURITE ALBUMS !!!!

Hello fellow music obsessives, compulsive obsessives and kleptomaniacs (not me personally, but i'm sure we've all had our moments.....anyways). My name is Tim and i'm a 21 yr old singer-songwriter (at least i'd like to think so) from Sydney. Music has always been a huge part of my life and i was lucky enough to recently stumble upon this site, which appears to be a haven for the record collector and geek (ie. me).

For the last week or so i've poured through alot of older posts and come to one irrefutable conclusion: Ned likes 'Loveless' quite a bit. (stating the obvious i know....it is a great album though). On the topic of albums, i thought i'd just give you guys (and gurls....i hope. This place better be a sea of cute indie chicks or else!!!) a rundown of my favourie albums....OF ALL TIME !!!! (Capital letters = dramatic). I'll just list them for now, but later on i'll probaly attempt somes reviews of a smaller selection and giver them a ranking as well. I'm very interested to hear what everyone thinks of my choices, love them or hate them. Also, feel free to make recommendations based on my taste.

And now for your viewing pleasure (i've even alphabetised......yay !!).

When I saw this thread at the top of "New Questions", a wave of certainty swept over me that it would be at the top of "New Answers" as well...

Saxby D. Elder (Saxby D. Elder), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

hey tim in all seriousness our search function isn't really working very well at the moment, so take a little extra time to search for threads about, say, Sparklehorse before you start one. otherwise it will probably get locked and you will be teased and mocked.

and be sure to read the FAQ if you haven't already.

and heed deej's words about real names.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:04 (eighteen years ago)

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

Wow....a whole five minutes and the predatory music buffs already come out to play. Do you guys just sit there and wait for a new question to arrive ? Sorry about the small i....i know that such a grammar based faux paus is probaly unforgivable *openly weeps*....if only you guys could give me another chance....please, god please !!

On a less sarcastic note, at least try and make your contributions worthwhile with some recommendations or constructive criticisms. For the less pretensious of you here's a side question : how many of these titles do you have in your own collection or sold/avoided and for what reason.

Cutty, thanks for your comment. Ihaven't heard any of those and will be sure to check them out. Brainwasher and sleeve....i know you're trying to multitask, but while your posting these, many of your cyber "friends" are feeling neglected in their marathon sessions of World of warcraft. So i think your needed elsewhere !

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:06 (eighteen years ago)

dude I just gave you some totally serious sincere advice. and that includes the first post.

Sachiko Kanenobu - Misora

this is a really lovely album

jimbo (electricsound), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)

Cutty, thanks for your comment. Ihaven't heard any of those and will be sure to check them out.

you won't find them on pitchfork

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

If you like Sparklehorse, you'll love Adam Beales

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

I would say that you are about 98% twee. I am only about 5% twee, so I only share six of those records. Kate Bush, NMH, Bowie, Leonard Cohen and Love. I don't really like the Love that much.

Candy: tastes like chicken, if chicken was a candy. (Austin, Still), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, listen to what you like, don't let a lot of jerks get you down. Your music and mine do not have a lot of intersections, but it's all good.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

The group, of course.

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

Serious about the name change, tho

deej.. (deej..), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:28 (eighteen years ago)

I realise that some of the albums may not be particularly new or exciting favourites, but i'm not going to lie and say i like faust or whatever the token indie geek holy grail is this week, just for the sake of it. These albums all mean alot to me and whether i found out about them on pitchfork or through a friend is irrelevant....maybe for once these threads could be about the music and not a knowledge pissing contest. I may be young, but i've read enough music mags & listened to enough records to come to realise that knowing about music doesn't necessarily mean you can fully appreciate music.

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:30 (eighteen years ago)

roger goodell (gear), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:38 (eighteen years ago)

OMG SHUT UP.

Hey, I thought the post that was directed at was pretty well said! And plucky.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Brainwasher and sleeve....i know you're trying to multitask, but while your posting these, many of your cyber "friends" are feeling neglected in their marathon sessions of World of warcraft. So i think your needed elsewhere !

Dear Sir: pls never, EVER come over to ILG. kthx.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

This place is a battlefield and for the moment i'm quite happy to have Haikunym and sleeve as allies. Also, a delayed reaction to Candy taste like chicken's comment- how are any of these albums besides Vashti, Joanna, Zobies and maybe of montreal, twee exactly ?

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:00 (eighteen years ago)

Uh, that should be Zombies. But these 60's sci-fi referencing Japanese group are worth a look too.

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

Serious comment here Tim: if you took time to read ILM for a while (and hey, good on you if you did!), then surely by now you'dve noticed how much certain ... um... personality types get shat on here?

Also, implying people are Wow loser nerds as an insult=lame and overdone.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:05 (eighteen years ago)

I will only be your ally if you promise to listen to Erykah Badu, Cheap Trick, Parliament, and El Gran Silencio in the next 96 hours and then report back to us. If not -- I'm off the Lucas Train.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

what Haikunym said, except my recommendations are one Nurse With Wound track, one Merzbow track, and the entire Young Marble Giants LP.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

Ahem. I still don't know if you've figured out what kind of people dominate this site. This site is populated with lots of so-called "popists" - that is, people who use the same pretty words and references that "alternative" fans often do, except these people use them to defend whatever most 12-year-old kids are currently into. :)

* Also, implying people are Wow loser nerds as an insult=lame and overdone.

I can see what you mean Trayce, but wouldn't you agree that the reception to new posters being a series of cynical and prejudice laden quips is overdone as well. Even as a joke, Emily's reference to "hazing" seems pretty accurate.

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:24 (eighteen years ago)

you still haven't changed your name

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

By all means keep the comments coming, some of this is the funniest bullshit i've read in years.

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)

you won't think it's so funny when, in five years, a prospective employer asks you about something you posted here when you were drunk at 3 A.M.

sleeve (sleeve), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

That wasn't in reference to your comment cutty, but i do wonder why all the fuss over names. Is someone going to hunt me down for my taste in music....oh wait, that already happened.

Tim Lucas (Piano Fire (Tim Lucas)), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

For the last week or so i've poured through alot of older posts and come to one irrefutable conclusion: Ned likes 'Loveless' quite a bit.

Ned you're setting a bad example, I think.

This is indeed a disturbing universe. [/Maggie]

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 03:37 (eighteen years ago)

Cut 50% of the indie albums off the list. Try listening to some music that doesn't get reviewed on pitchforkmedia. Oh. And where the hell is some Dylan? Throw a Dylan album on the list and a Joni Mitchell and I'll second Haikunym.

Also: If you're looking to listen to more music like the kind you're already listening to, God knows why you're asking here. Doesn't PFM have that Best New Music section? If you're looking for new music: Try the NY Dolls, Sex Pistols and X. Not enough righteous fury in your choices.

omg it's not "alphabetised"

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

1. Find a Boards of Canada thread and tell us more about why you prefer Geogaddi to Music has the Right to Children -- I'm sure there's a discussion somewhere around here.

2. Based on enjoying stuff like Augie March and Badly Drawn Boy, possibly you'd enjoy the first two Trash Can Sinatras records. I enjoy recommending them to people. Also, so long as I'm recommending 90s indie, I think you might Versus. (Like Secret Swingers and The Stars are Insane.)

3. You like Jens Lekman: do you like indiepop? Like Beat Happening or Heavenly?

4. Based on liking M83 and respecting Loveless love: You might like Lali Puna's Scary World Theory. Or really any of that German indie/electronic stuff, like the Morr Music roster -- they did a tribute to Slowdive that's in the same synth/shoegaze pocket as M83.

5. I keep imagining that people who like that Mew album might also like the Swirlies' They Spent their Wild Youthful Days..., but it seems not to work with younger folks.

6. I share your love of Red House Painters -- there's probably a thread around here you could visit to talk about why you prefer Ocean Beach to, say, the rollercoaster one.

7. Kinda per the Patrick Wolf thing, I really really heartily recommend looking for Final Fantasy's He Poos Clouds! Don't get all mixed up by the title, it's quite serious and really wonderful.

8. I was unaware that the young people still even heard Bandwagonesque. Maybe it's an Australia thing. Their kind of pop has something in common with a lot of Australian and NZ jangly indie bands, but maybe you've already heard a lot of those: The Go-Betweens? Nice (see: "Dear John")?

9. Part of how people get the HAZING around here is that they ridiculously offer themselves up for it by walking onto a message board full of 200 snarky people and going HI I'M NEW HERE ARE THE ALBUMS I LIKE PLEASE COMMENT, in which case OF COURSE this is the response. A much better plan is to just read threads, and then, when you have something to say on them, say it! You are a million times less likely to get hazed that way! Go find threads on bands you like and revive them with some thoughts/questions on the discussion above. Or just, like, answer questions on the New Answers page. There's even a dedicated thread for people to introduce themselves. Just, like ... participate, keep it low-key and shit.

Tim Lucas, is this your first time on the internet? Holy shit...Pitchfork should fucking copyright you and sell the rights to InSound so people get a free Tim Lucas with every Death Cab album purchase. For someone seemingly concerned with the grammar gripes and personality clashes on this site, you still come off like a douche, only you lack the wit of more seasoned posters.

I posit this guy has two weeks before he ends up in the ILM clearance bin.

Tuesdays With Morimoto (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

What do all those numbers mean?
There is a running joke here in rec.juggling (which unfortunately has made its way into the FAQ) in which seasoned posters attempt to persuade newbies that certain classes of juggling patterns can be represented by numerical strings, and they go on to discuss the 'tricks' that they have just learned. This is of course nonsense, as you will soon discover if you attempt to follow any of the 'explanations' of this system. Personally I think that jokes of this sort are in very bad taste. Clowns like Boppo and 'Mister' Frog should stick to face painting, and leave rec.juggling to the serious jugglers.

Just ignore any post in rec.juggling containing more than three numbers in a row and you will be a happier person. Really.

Throw away Leonard Cohen?? That's fucked up!!!

Frogm@n Henry (Frogm@n Henry), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

ok, Tim. welcome, and here are some suggestions. being a habitual lurker,i can skip the snark and get on with the musiclove. which will only encourage you, much to the eternal chagrin of the ilx regulars. which can only be a good thing.

if you like BDB and BoC, i suspect you'd like much of what Stephen Jones does. of the first five Baby Bird albums, Fatherhood is best. if there's a best-of, try that. skip Babybird, the band, and leave solo Jones (which is like Beck/BoC but stranger) for later.

being .au, you must know the Lucksmiths. if not, remedy that immediately. Where Were We for the history; Naturaliste to rival Sparklehorse and RHP.

as noted above, The Blue Nile and Kate Bush are interesting inclusions. ok, dated production doesn't trouble you. try Danielle Dax. i'd suggest starting with Dark Adapted Eye, a decent overview, and work backwards. the real gems are Pop Eyes, Jesus Egg That Wept and Inky Bloaters, but they're pretty out-there. ease yourself in. you might also like Perry Blake (California) and Coloma (Finery).

BJM do many things fairly well but nothing exceptionally, and certainly not better than those who did it first. there's a mountain of influences to digest, from the ubiquitous (Jefferson Airplane, Neu!, Count Five) to the truly obscure. forget BJM and investigate these roots. and look for Greg Ashley's Medicine Fuck Dream. Anton wishes he could make an album this good.

Vashti Bunyan and Kanenobu Sahicko were just two among many talented pastoralist dreamers lost in the mists of time. try Sheelagh McDonald, Anne Briggs, Judee Sill, Lal Waterson, Maddy Prior. and prepare to be blown away over and over. since you like Leonard Cohen, check out guys like Steve Tilston, Bob Thiel, Nigel Mazlyn Jones, TOM RAPP!!!. better yet, just immerse yourself in the music of the Folk Rock movement, spearheaded by Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Steeleye Span, etc, and follow its currents where they lead.

NMH imitators aplenty, but Lovers Starlit Sunken Ship really is as good as Aeorplane and yet tragically underloved. i think you'll adore it.

and i suspect you'll enjoy Cloud Cult a lot more than i do. so there's another one to look into. if you can get past wincing at the title, give Advice from the Happy Hippopotamus a listen.

Ghost Bear Junior High Attendance Party (Ghost Bear Junior High Attenda), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 05:05 (eighteen years ago)

Danielle Dax and Maddy Prior enthusiastically seconded.

I also like Cloud Cult quite a bit.

Mordechai Shinefield (Mordy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:36 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, why is it OK to slag off Brian May and Alexis Petridis here but not Our Timothy?

Is this a serious question?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:39 (eighteen years ago)

To my knowledge neither May nor I ALEXIS has posted a perfectly harmless introductory thread to ILx and then been immediately shot down.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:41 (eighteen years ago)

If there's enough demand for a rolling 2007 Tim Lucas thread, it will happen

Hell Hath No Furry (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:42 (eighteen years ago)

Sure why not. If one is more annoyed by someone new actually doing an intro 'hi dere ILM please like me' thread with upper case and 'why use one exclamation mark when four will do' approach than whatever actual critics or musicians have been spouting about this week, are they wrong? or are they wrong to criticise it/take the piss in the same way we do of actual music critics and musicians who are people too and deserve our respahahahaha sorry i just couldn't keep it going damn.

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:43 (eighteen years ago)

God knows why I posted here in the first place. My point about PFM wasn't to be cruel, it was just to point out that he might want to be a bit more adventurous. But what the hell. I'll vote for a R.2007 Tim Lucas Thread.

Mordechai Shinefield (Mordy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

MAKES YOU THINK THO

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:44 (eighteen years ago)

If it takes off I'll round up all my friends etc whose music tastes mainly lie in winsome guitar music and plippy electronica, and they can also each have a rolling 2007 thread where everyone can find out what they've been thinkin' and sayin'!

Hell Hath No Furry (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, why is it OK to slag off Hitler and George W Bush here but not ILx newbies?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:49 (eighteen years ago)

Cause liking Wagner and condemning Mahler is simply bullshit. And cause George W. admits he didn't like the Paris album. Jerk.

Mordechai Shinefield (Mordy), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:51 (eighteen years ago)

Godwin's Law invoked. Other person wins argument.

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Sure why not. If one is more annoyed by someone new actually doing an intro 'hi dere ILM please like me' thread with upper case and 'why use one exclamation mark when four will do' approach than whatever actual critics or musicians have been spouting about this week, are they wrong? or are they wrong to criticise it/take the piss in the same way we do of actual music critics and musicians who are people too and deserve our respahahahaha sorry i just couldn't keep it going damn.

May and Petridis are both willing public figures who put themselves up for public scrutiny and debate every time they intentionally step into the published and popular sphere of the culture industry. it's Petridis' job to write, to think, to critique, to judge. It's May's job to have big hair and play a guitar he made himself. The pay-off for their vast wealth, fame, sexual attractiveness and huge socio-political clout is that anyone, anywhere, has the right to mock them.

Tim is a guy who wants to join "our" "community", and OK, he may have done it in a gauche way, but he didn't deserve to be outright bullied for that. It's not OK because aside from a few posts here we know nothing about him and are owed nothing by him. We know considerably more about May and Petridis and they both owe us a more considerable debt (i.e. to do their respective jobs to the best of their ability).

So yeah, it's super notfuckingfair to bully a newcomer to a community just because he or she doens't bend 100% to your standards of "how to post" on an internet messageboard, and it's super fuckingfair to take the piss out of public figures doing stupid things in public (although Petridis has done nothing stupid here, and May, well, he strikes me as being insane, and we shouldn't mock the afflicted).

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

Nick OT fucking M.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 10:56 (eighteen years ago)

I disagree.

Tim has put himself up for 'our' scrutiny by starting a thread in this way.

Wealth, fame, sexual attractiveness and huge socio-political clout are largely irrelevant in this case, esp. as far as ILMers go of course. If there is such a thing as a 'right to mock' it is for individuals to judge and apply as they see fit I suppose. But then don't be surprised if some find it acceptable to mock someone for something even tho you don't.

I'm not sure people should be saying 'bullying' as opposed to just 'insulting' either. But that's another can o' worms.

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)

There's scrutiny, there's banter, there's joshing, and then there's what Brightscreamer posted, and gang-mentality, and just the whole atmosphere of GO THE FUCK AWAY, YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR US that pervades this place, and always has done, and is really, really horrible.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:06 (eighteen years ago)

The most important question is, Tim, what do you think of Bjork?

Just teasing. Seriously, ups for the inclusion of Blue Nile. I'm curious how you came to hear it.

Good luck, and I hope you hear a lot of new things through your participation on this board. Also, I sincerely hope that Faust will click for you and you won't associate it with "indie" or "cool"--because they really can't be underestimated (the first three years, anyway) and I doubt too many people like them because they're supposed to. And if you do read Pitchforkmedia.com, I recommend you focus in on whatever Dominique Leone reviews for a while.

I.M. (I.M.), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

just to add, i think there's actually some good variety in tim's list. my picks would have been notably less adventurous at 21.

Charlie Howard (the sphinx), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

vita susicivus (blueski), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

Tim has put himself up for 'our' scrutiny by starting a thread in this way.

You really are a pompous little cunt, aren't you?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Should I have prefaced my post with an image of a tongue firmly planted in a cheek? My post was supposed to be funny, mainly 'cause I hardly post here and am still considerably new/unknown. You know, like an outsider sneaking my way into the elite class by joining the villagers in the stoning of a witch. I should have known I'd be the only one laughing...(sigh)
Regardless, this is the internet. People with feelings should tread lightly. If people want to make fun of someone, let them flame on. I would take it with a grain of salt and laugh at the things people came up with.

As for Tim...I'll play nice. Do yourself a favor and buy the Faust "Wumme Years" set. It easily checkmates >50% of your list.

brightscreamer (brightscreamer), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:24 (eighteen years ago)

if anybody had actually responded to Tim by saying 'You really are a pompous little cunt, aren't you?' then I would object to that.

i feel it's unwise to resort to personal abuse like this and most people seem to know not to do this. it appears that Marcello still, even at his advanced age, doesn't/can't/won't however. under the circumstances i think if someone receives personal verbal abuse in this way (and not for the first time) they should have the right to complain about the person attacking them to moderators who can decide if action should be taken.

i have reported Marcello's personal verbal abuse/attack on me to a moderator who may or may not take action accordingly.

is anyone anticipating the new Baaderonixx? (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 7 February 2007 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

I'm really sick of the boy's club atmosphere the attacks on newbies helps to perpetuate around here. I don't care about the list one way or another, but this stuff gets really tiresome. (And yes, I do stick around, because there are other things I value about ILM.)

(I wish there could be a frozen-in-place introductions thread, or something of that sort, for new posters wanting to introduce themselves, not that I've ever thought that sort of formal introduction business was necessary on a discussion board or in a newsgroup. My own instincts are to look around and jump in, maybe in small ways at first.)

Incidentally, Tim, if you like Kate Bush, you might like Shiina Ringo. Try Shouso Strip or Karuki Zaamen Kuri-no-Hana. (And I say this not to be friendly, but because I am pushing Shiina Ringo.)

ksh, Monday, 3 May 2010 19:42 (fifteen years ago)

Ahem. I still don't know if you've figured out what kind of people dominate this site. This site is populated with lots of so-called "popists" - that is, people who use the same pretty words and references that "alternative" fans often do, except these people use them to defend whatever most 12-year-old kids are currently into. :)

* If your wondering why sparklehorse has two entries, it's because Mark Linkous is my favourite artist and he needs to be shown some more lovin' on iLM....or else i'll kidnap you and take you to a rustic cabin in Virginia where the 'horse will personally serenade you with his gothic country fables till your ears bleed...or send some bitchy posts...either way.

Hope he's ok, what with Mark's recent death. Maybe someone should send him a PM and check?

Geir OTFM, it has to be said.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 3 May 2010 21:08 (fifteen years ago)

Meh. Maybe five years ago. ILX hasn't really been a "popist / 12-year-old" haven for awhile, tho.
