-- Rock Enro (ROCKISM10...), February 10th, 2007.
That's some whack curriculum. Sounds like someone needs to go back to the College of Rock 'n Roll Knowledge! Or, a different one, anyway -- it's the Jimi Hendrix Experience by a country mile. Cream is #2. Nirvana would probably be #3, but that's really a concession to the grandkids (in all honesty, they only have about 5 good songs)... The real #3 would be Live in Europe-era Creedence!
Choogle.
A true rockist wouldn't be caught dead listening to Dino, what with all the off key caterwauling, samey songs and sloppy rhythm.

dino jr. is sort of the best depression band, in that sort of teenage way in which depression feels huge and vast and empty yet you don't really have the desire or even ability to express what your feelings even are, it's sort of numb feeling, yet it's very intense, a sort of like a jet engine on nyquil
― stank pony (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)
Good to see they didn't do the typical split until the next greatest hits tour reunion. I loved Beyond when it came out, now I just kind of like it. It beat expectations, and was definitely an improvement over J's solo stuff. Live they were great. I'm looking forward to this.

I would be maybe more concerned about that if D, Jr. had stayed together all these years, and never developed their sound. OTOH, after breaking up, and given their age, I'm pretty amazed at the fire and energy of their new stuff (only heard one single from the new disc, tho).
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 7 June 2009 01:44 (sixteen years ago)

i like it a lot. agree about Plans and Pieces, maybe some other i forgot. the sound of the guitars does get a little irritating after a while, but since i was listening to mp3's i doubt it had anything to do with wrong mixing anyway.
― Ludo, Thursday, 2 July 2009 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

i couldnt find the loudness war/cd mastering thread so have posted this here. id like to see them live though if they do old songs.
DINOSUAR JR. ALBUM TOO LOUD? - ALSO BAND ANNOUNCE LONDON SHOW FOR SEPTEMBER
Dinosaur Jr. have been made aware that the European CD version of their new album “Farm” has an audio problem. Whilst duplicating the original master, the software program ‘doubled’ the sound layers. This resulted in a 3dB increase in the overall sound volume.
Anyone that has bought a copy of the album with the bar code number 5414939004926, should go to http://media.pias.com/dinosaurjrfarmcd. and will be told how to exchange their copy. The band are ’bummed’ that this happened and are not taking the situation lightly. Both Dinosaur Jr. and their label PIAS would like to offer their fans something extra for this inconvenience, so in addition to a replacement CD, fans can download a free ringtone of the single "Over It".
A valid email address is required to receive the ringtone. Postage will also be covered to make this exchange easier.

Always puts me in a great mood, though I REALLY don't like the two Barlow tracks (bad way to end the album) (gotta remember to delete those). Very much that classic feel though, which is more than one could have expected this far along.
― Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)
I forget which one has that super jangly guitar riff, either the first or third track. I love that one, gotta listen to the rest again when I've got a chance
― k3vin k., Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

i really liked his tunes on Beyond, though (and he actually had a song on side 1 for once!). i don't think there's a single album this year i feel more conflicted/disappointed about not liking as much as other people. and i mean, i was pretty into Hand It Over and More Light.

yeah it was great! just doesn't seem to be universally well regarded, though.
― some dude, Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
It has some less-than-memorable tracks (as do most of his/Dino's records), but it also has some pretty unique elements as well--MBV's backing vocals for starters.... I pretty much like everything he/they have done except for "Free so Free"--that one was just lackluster in every way.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i feel like he's never made a perfect album but he's really consistent from album to album (although i missed Free So Free and never got the impression i really needed to hear it, so i'll take your word for it). Hand It Over definitely has some distict sounds that make it probably my 2nd fav Dino album after You're Living.
― some dude, Thursday, 3 September 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)
That's what I'm saying. This is a really good album. Actually liked the one before it a little more. Still, that cover art is fucking outstanding.

So many prime Mascis titles here. "I Know It Oh So Well" and "Stick a Toe In" are pretty good, but "Almost Fare" and "What Was That" are Green Mind-caliber

been in a heavy Dino Jr phase lately, psyched to hear there's a new one on the way
― some dude, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:09 (thirteen years ago)
the last two are so so good. they are total sanctuary records for me, I come back to them on headphones when I need them, either to fry myself to I Don't Wanna Go There or for the frazzled tender slow jams. I can see Pierce The Morning Rain as a J thing. his lyrics are so simple and sad now.
― blossom smulch (schlump), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:14 (thirteen years ago)
I hope the bass makes an appearance in the mix this time.
― WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:18 (thirteen years ago)
Sanctuary records is the perfect way to describe them. Dinosaur Jr. was my favorite band though middle school (which I suppose is odd in hindsight), so having them back and making honestly great new albums is such a source of comfort. It's vindicating to know that middle school Evan wasn't wrong; these guys were and are awesome
― Evan R, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:20 (thirteen years ago)
why is that odd? they were my favorite in middle and high school too.
― mizzell, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:21 (thirteen years ago)
Eh, I guess it's not odd in and of itself so much as it's odd to think of a time when Dinosaur Jr. could have been a middle schooler's favorite band. And sometimes I forget that they were my favorite. It's easy to simply those memories and make Nirvana or The Clash or some other important band my favorite. But no, it was always Dino Jr.
― Evan R, Wednesday, 13 June 2012 20:25 (thirteen years ago)

the bass is plenty prominent on Beyond iirc but on Farm it felt like the guitar was way too high in the mix to the detriment of everything else, not just bass -- drums and vox too

That sounds suspiciously like the two post-Green Mind albums that I didn't really like so much. Hoping Mascis has perfected the formula since then.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:07 (thirteen years ago)
slow jams on the last couple have been real nice, i think. & inventive. like with cellos and stuff.
― blossom smulch (schlump), Saturday, 30 June 2012 23:10 (thirteen years ago)
i like this jam. a lot. like the production, too.
if the rest of the record holds up, they'll be 3 for 3.
― dronestreet, Sunday, 1 July 2012 01:18 (thirteen years ago)
not quite as good as farm, i think
but it's a niche i'm unlikely to ever grow tired of hearing

I keep wanting things to be a little sloppier, but really liking this album a lot. Lou's "Rude" is nice.
― dlp9001, Thursday, 20 September 2012 03:02 (thirteen years ago)
man this album sounds really great, could easily see this becoming my favorite of the reunion albums
― some dude, Thursday, 20 September 2012 12:56 (thirteen years ago)
right now, this is #2 on my reunion list. (after Beyond)
whole record sounds so great. love the purple swirl vinyl, too.
lou's songs are particular standouts.

this is by far my least fave of the reunion lps. Farm is the best.
― Jamie_ATP, Friday, 28 September 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)
Not quite "by far", but yeah I'd rank 'em as Farm > Beyond > this one. Love 'em all, just to varying degrees.

How do these albums compare to the Green Mind/Where you Been years
― Master of Treacle, Friday, 28 September 2012 20:44 (thirteen years ago)
i like them better but then i've never been big on those albums (i'm a weirdo who thinks Hand It Over is the best of the Barlow-less years)
― overglorified male ani difrancos i have pwned (some dude), Friday, 28 September 2012 21:03 (thirteen years ago)
hand it over is great.
― Trad., Arrrgh (stevie), Friday, 28 September 2012 22:27 (thirteen years ago)

You know what record is really good? The J Mascis solo record Several Shades of Why.
― kornrulez6969, Saturday, 29 September 2012 04:01 (thirteen years ago)
Farm is great.
New LP is greater.

neat!

I'm skeptical that the sound quality is going to be decent, but damn, I love that cover!
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 26 October 2012 17:52 (thirteen years ago)
dunno, if it's one of them dutch radio broadcasts, the quality will probably be pretty great.

surprised there wasn't more discussion of i bet on sky itt. one of my 2012 favorites. love the relative gentleness and thickets of softened fuzz. maybe now that the reunion novelty's worn off, it's easy to take them for granted. they deserve better. PUT A RING ON IT.
― I have many lovely lacy nightgowns (contenderizer), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 04:54 (twelve years ago)
yeah it's an awesome album, could very well be my favorite of the reunion LPs. really looking forward to the Dino Jr. tracks poll.
― HOOSTEENA/The Steens of God (some dude), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 05:01 (twelve years ago)
i bet on sky is really great, picked it up almost by accident and it pleasantly surprised me
― diced pretty (electricsound), Wednesday, 17 April 2013 05:07 (twelve years ago)
i dunno i feel i bet on sky was good and beyond was fine but farm is, like, the apotheosis maaaan

"Farm" opens with three superb songs and then it deteriorates for me.

Thanks, this thread. Haven't listened to Dinosaur Jr for probably 20 years, but like Wire, I hadn't heard that they were 'good again'.
Just bought 'Farm' on the strength of 'Beyond', so will see how that goes, but 'Beyond' seemed like probably the most consistent record of theirs I've heard. The old ones had great moments, but a bunch of daft moments too.
Also, kudos to having the Jolly Green Giant on the sleeve for "Farm". Never much liked Sebad'oh, but can't help thinking that his return injected some sort of spark.
