Dinosaur Jr.: Brilliant or crap?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Who gives a shit about the album though? Let's talk about the ugly Nike's Mascis "designed"!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

I love ugly dunks but even those are just ultra hideous.

J. has always worn that model of shoe though, for reals (well at least 90-95).

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

i like the album so far! haven't really digested much yet, but "crumble" does the classic dino uberwussy/uberaggro thing amazingly well.

little buckaroo!! (teenagequiet), Friday, 9 February 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

My humble opinion: this record is going to be terrible, in a really good, getting old, cool way.

Mr. Butch (Mr. Butch), Friday, 9 February 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

The first half of this is really great, but it slows down a bit towards the end.

4 Dinosaur Jr. - New Album

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Saturday, 10 February 2007 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

Dino Jr. was named as the greatest all-time Power Trio on Rockism 101.

Rock Enro (Rock Enro), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

You can get the leak there btw.

Rock Enro (Rock Enro), Saturday, 10 February 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

Why hello Mr. Wagemann! *waves*

StanM (StanM), Saturday, 10 February 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

Dino Jr. was named as the greatest all-time Power Trio on Rockism 101.

-- Rock Enro (ROCKISM10...), February 10th, 2007.

That's some whack curriculum. Sounds like someone needs to go back to the College of Rock 'n Roll Knowledge! Or, a different one, anyway -- it's the Jimi Hendrix Experience by a country mile. Cream is #2. Nirvana would probably be #3, but that's really a concession to the grandkids (in all honesty, they only have about 5 good songs)... The real #3 would be Live in Europe-era Creedence!

Choogle.

A true rockist wouldn't be caught dead listening to Dino, what with all the off key caterwauling, samey songs and sloppy rhythm.

Tronid K (tronidk), Saturday, 10 February 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

"A true rockist wouldn't be caught dead listening to Dino, what with all the off key caterwauling, samey songs and sloppy rhythm."

You say this right after claiming that Nirvana is the third best power trio of all time?

This album is surprisingly AMAZING.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 21 February 2007 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

This album is surprisingly AMAZING unnecessary.

Fixed it for you.

Shame it adds nothing, says nothing and is barely acceptable as an exercise it reliving old glory. It was one thing to tour and rediscover a love for the old stuff, and a whole other thing to put out material that sounds like outtakes and leftovers from the old stuff.

It's better than anything post Green Mind, but that's like saying, "Well, the turds not on fire anymore. I got to have it!"

Can you tell I'm not really into this?

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

not yet, pls post more!

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I like it, but then, I'm in the small minority that likes J best when he's solo and playing the drums on his records (aside from You're Living All Over Me my favorite records of his are the last one as Dinosaur, Hand It Over, and the first Fog album), so I'd probably dig dude's new stuff with or without Lou and Murph. I do kinda like the 2 songs with Lou on vox, though, and I've never been a particular fan of his.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 22 February 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

Rest of the album as good as Almost Ready?

MRZBW, Thursday, 22 February 2007 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

Fixed it for you.

not really into this new ILM thing of people fixing things with strikethroughs and then replacing the word with their word. How about just say what *you* think?

I agree, the album is better than anything post Green Mind (and better than much of it), and I think that makes it something extremely enjoyable and lovely, necessary or not.

There's even one song with subtle "glide guitar" which is very unnecessary necessary.

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 22 February 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

Am I the only one who thinks Green Mind is Dinosaur's worst album? What the hell? Where You Been outshines just about anything on that record. Sure, the songs were good, but Green Mind turned J into a cheese-ball, and the production is ridiculous. You can just imagine him sitting in the studio, trying to recreate the subtle acoustic/electric interplay of Freak Scene. Too bad it came out sounding so miserable. The production may have been slicker on Where You Been, too, but aesthetically and artistically, that record was a return to form. I know, I know, most people had never heard of Dinosaur Jr prior to Green Mind and, as such, it serves as the benchmark for everything, before or after. Which leaves most folks in one of two camps: 1) those for whom the early records, most notably YLAOM, represent some sort of mythical, indie-rock perfection, and 2) those who equate Where You Been and Without a Sound with the whole grunge thing, of which they were NEVER a part. Please, give those records a shot. They're really good.

jstlkhvn, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

and, on a different note: where can I track down a copy of the new record? I've heard the two tracks that've been officially 'leaked,' but I'm dying to hear the rest. Thanks.

jstlkhvn, Friday, 23 February 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

jstlkhvn:

Wouldn't call Green Mind the worst thing they ever did. I prefer it to Where You Been (if only slightly), and it's a hell of a lot better than anything that came after. Sure, it's kinda crappy overall, but redeemed by the inclusion of the last two Dinosaur Jr. songs I ever loved: "The Wagon" and the title track. Where You Been sounds better -- tougher, rawer -- but but the songs don't do much for me.

I loved the band when they were leavening dirgey proto-grunge with hardcore fury, concise guitar heroics and geeky indie-pop hooks. I threw in the towel after Where You Been, though, 'cuz they tossed everything but the "dirgey" and the "guitar heroics" (minus concision). Apparently, my loss was your gain...

Pye Poudre, Friday, 23 February 2007 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard Where You Been (or the debut, for that matter), but I definitely agree that Green Mind is my least favorite Dinosaur album. I knew some of the songs from the acoustic versions on Martin & Me, first, and when I finally heard the original versions they were so disappointing compared to what I imagined the full-band arrangements to be like (particularly "Flying Cloud" and "Thumb"). I'll make a point to check out Where You Been, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 23 February 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Where you been is better than Green Mind.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 23 February 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

There you go then.

Pye Poudre, Friday, 23 February 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

i hope the record sounds like that cover ... i actually really liked the last one when it came out, but i haven't listened to it in a long while now. I have listened to You're Living All Over Me instead.

tylerw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 22:43 (sixteen years ago)

in fact, i may do that RIGHT NOW.

tylerw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 22:52 (sixteen years ago)

Beyond was a dud for me. By numbers, lacking in tunes.

paulhw, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 22:53 (sixteen years ago)

dunno, i'll grant you "by the numbers" but I think it's fairly tuneful.

yeah you will like it if you like living over me

dino jr. is sort of the best depression band, in that sort of teenage way in which depression feels huge and vast and empty yet you don't really have the desire or even ability to express what your feelings even are, it's sort of numb feeling, yet it's very intense, a sort of like a jet engine on nyquil

stank pony (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 23:12 (sixteen years ago)

Good to see they didn't do the typical split until the next greatest hits tour reunion. I loved Beyond when it came out, now I just kind of like it. It beat expectations, and was definitely an improvement over J's solo stuff. Live they were great. I'm looking forward to this.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:00 (sixteen years ago)

lou songs on 'beyond' are $

6335, Thursday, 26 March 2009 05:11 (sixteen years ago)

Still haven't heard any recent Dinosaur Jr, but on their first few albums and live those rickenbacker bass chords were half the beauty.

Zaireeka Badu (NickB), Wednesday, 13 June 2012 21:28 (thirteen years ago)

fwiw i always thought the bass came through fine on the last couple, or never noticed its absence. it's obv way more prominent on the lou songs, too.

but I really focus on J's guitar so much that I don't really find myself missing the bass all that much.

I'd have to listen to Beyond again, but it's inaudible on Farm, AFAIC

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:26 (thirteen years ago)

the bass is plenty prominent on Beyond iirc but on Farm it felt like the guitar was way too high in the mix to the detriment of everything else, not just bass -- drums and vox too

some dude, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:38 (thirteen years ago)

Still haven't heard any recent Dinosaur Jr

Really, set aside a couple hours and hear those records. You will probably be surprised at how much they feel like the band just picked up where they left off a couple decades ago.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 June 2012 00:42 (thirteen years ago)

seem to remember a huge amount of the first run of Farm were mastered incorrectly so i guess there are a ton of bad copies out there still

Jamie_ATP, Thursday, 14 June 2012 03:20 (thirteen years ago)

Never seen 'em live, so the three-day residency 5 mins from my house is quite a treat.

yeah it is obviously gonna sound like presentism/contrarianism, but i'm w/this - i'm way more likely to put one of the last two on. the weird angles some of them have - i got lost, said the people, &c - sorta match up with the weird, unique-to-dinosaur jams from the first run of records (gettin' rough, severed lips or w/e).

That sounds suspiciously like the two post-Green Mind albums that I didn't really like so much. Hoping Mascis has perfected the formula since then.

slow jams on the last couple have been real nice, i think. & inventive. like with cellos and stuff.

Thanks, this thread. Haven't listened to Dinosaur Jr for probably 20 years, but like Wire, I hadn't heard that they were 'good again'.

Just bought 'Farm' on the strength of 'Beyond', so will see how that goes, but 'Beyond' seemed like probably the most consistent record of theirs I've heard. The old ones had great moments, but a bunch of daft moments too.

Also, kudos to having the Jolly Green Giant on the sleeve for "Farm". Never much liked Sebad'oh, but can't help thinking that his return injected some sort of spark.
