I try to update it at least on a daily basis and I have personal charts and links to a lot of MP3's and I could go on for hours about how great it is, but you'll have to see it to believe it. Oh, and if anyone knows a cool or suitable name for it feel free to make suggestions.

Note to self: start blog about music someone else likes.

nathalie (nathalie), Thursday, 17 April 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The pretentiously-named A Joshua Tree In Every Pot which has absolutely, positively nothing to do with the U2 album.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Thursday, 17 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-two years ago)

na realidade não

I like it how putting this link on here has given me a steady stream of visitors, even tho most of them won't be able to understand what the hell I'm on about. Still, hey, you can figure out what music I've been listening to and what books I've been reading on that nifty sidebar!

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 17 April 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a new online journal called Complicated Fun (complicatedfun.com). Read it and weep.

It's part of a circle called Twin Cities babelogue (babelogue.citypages.com), which really should link to Matos, Nate Patrin, Kate Sullivan et al...

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously, at this point, your blogs would flatter us rather than vice versa...

Pete Scholtes, Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! I suppose. I dig the URL ("I knew that song before the Target ad" says me at every opportunity 'cos I'm a Big Hits of Mid-America Volume Three double LP-havin' dork), and it looks entertaining enough for me to forgive Rapture-hate (though the screamin' ain't my favorite aspect of 'em anyways). Kapow! Bookmarked. I envy yr swingin' social life, though.

Now back to me me ME. I still have a blog. It's just elsewhere. Y'all probably know that.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Wednesday, 23 April 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So, I just started this a couple days ago: jaymc. Still very basic so far, but I'm hoping it will get me writing more regularly and less rambly than in my notebook-journal.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 25 April 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Woo! Gigantic is up and running.

http://www.giganticmag.com

Unfortunately, with all the madness of the last couple weeks and the actual designing and re-archiving of the site, I haven't written anything new. I'll see if I can't crank something out before bed.

In the meantime, please beta test it, and write me if it looks weird or fucks up or... whatever. Thanks.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 19 May 2003 03:47 (twenty-two years ago)

slutsky (slutsky), Monday, 19 May 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I know. I'll fix it tomorrow. I spent so much time making sure it would be easy to update the links that I forgot to update the links.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 19 May 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, you have till tomorrow. But after that you're in big trouble, pal.

Headphones Save Lives is about a bit of everything. some music, other obsessions, and general randomness. was more personal at the beginning, but has moved into more random territory now.

also the sadly not-updated-as-often-as-i-should recipe log is called Licking the Spoon. which should hopefully have a couple new recipes in the next few days, now that things have slowed down a bit...

janni (janni), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

anyone know what the story with it is?

1. BLOGSPOT SERVERS have NOT been loading pages with reliability this week - try refresh.

2. I read sometime ago that putting a hyphen in blogspot address was a BAD idea as some ISPs were not connecting to said webpages for some technical reason, re: the iraq war blogspot [indeed blogspot itself duplicated the content of the URL to a non hyphen version to improve access]

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

They're shifting it to a new version of the blogger software - thus far mine's working OK and the archive's back up and working. wait and see.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

so they must be doing it alpha order then, Nick,

how is the new interface of this new version of blogger, codenamed dano?

when you log in for the first time: is there any procedure to transfer over or is it automatic?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a little worried I may have set the bar too high for myself -- I mean, do I really have to be properly dialectical ALL the time? -- but I couldn't resist the title. Mainly it's a way of guilting myself into staying smart and attempting to keep to the aphorism format.

I suspect Adorno would disapprove of my enthusiasm for four-to-the-floor, however.

Well, let us stand united. Because I'm feeling VERY TEMPTED. Only because I discovered by accident that one of my very best friend was saying some ... strange things about something I said off-hand a seemingly long time ago. And it just, well, gave me a turn. Not that I felt like I should do it, too. But I wondered what the heck it was all about, and if I was missing something by *not* blogging.

I guess not.

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

if y'all want Livejournals as another source of work-related time-wasting fun, I have several unused codes that I can hook ya up with.

yeah, the site was started as a collection of webblogs, but it works much better as a message board with the "Friends" view.

not too exciting, huh?

now, compare it with this, which it fits in with much better.

three weeks pass...
Auspicious Fish!!!

Updated this morning with 2,500 words about my love affair with Embrace, and last night with a poem (possibly) by a Canadian scool pupil who committed suicide after handing it to his/her teacher, which I thought quite a few ILXORS might be interesting (I was first given the poem as a 15-yeard-old, when I did work experience at a primary school, by the teacher I was shadowing).

Also, has anyone had any trouble posting long articles on Blogger over the weekend? Mine kept refusing to post the whole article and had to eventually chop it into three bits. I notice Marcello posted his transcript on the CoM for the radio show (reading is not as good as I imagine listening would have been, fucking bandwidth) which was obviously quite long, so is it posting long pieces alright for other people and does Blogger just hate me?

xx

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 30 June 2003 08:35 (twenty-two years ago)

in my experience, different browsers allow different lengths of posts to blogs (opera allows distinctly less than netscape eg)

mark s (mark s), Monday, 30 June 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in Internet Explorer, from which I'm sure I've posted pieces of 1,500 words or more in the past (even if not quite 2,500). Strange.

Let's Get Incredible!

T. Weiss (Timmy), Monday, 30 June 2003 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying this from any particular "I've tested Opera vs Netscape, etc.." standpoint, but the nature of textareas (the box we type in) in HTML is controlled by a specific length that the person who coded the page decided. E.g. <input type=textarea maxlength=50000> gives us a maxlength of 50,000 characters. Many people don't put maxlengths in their textarea, or only define it in terms of size (widthxheight) so it may be true as well that opera/ns handles them differently.

I guess to plug my blog, right now it's here, and my long-abandoned design site (still with working bits of html available for plundering) is here.

nick.K (nick.K), Friday, 11 July 2003 07:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I kinda like that error, it's in keeping with the site. Zabriskie Point is a place for images that have recently fallen out of my camera. Words and meanings are few, I like the images to speak for themselves. Zabriskie Point is named after both the visually stunning film by Antonioni - highly subjective and indulgent, albeit enjoyably so - and the remote Borax mine in the centre of death valley.

No, seriously - hey, Nick, if you wanna submit your URL to Google, click on the JOBS, PRESS, & HELP link on the front page, & then click on the SUBMITTING YOUR SITE (underneath the yellow mini-banner). & then watch the spam come arollin' in!

Also, Robin, heed Ronan's advice - the honeymoon is super-fun (the excitement! the possible readership! the novelty!) & if you can somehow get past the mundanity of the enterprise & keep it fresh for yourself (why bother? who cares what I'm writing? why the hell can't I write anything?), it's all good. Fear of over-saturating the blog market is unnecessary and booshit.

Inspired by the fantastic fluxblog, I've started a similar site. I don't have as many new music connections, so it's going to focus more on overlooked items from the past. This week features the Dustdevils who should be of interest to fans of Sonic Youth (as well as to people who want to know what Mark Ibold was up to before he joined Pavement). Once I get more comfortable with all the technology, I'll be featuring a lot of vinyl only releases. It's at www.mysticalbeast.blogspot.com.

thank you martin for the thumbs-up. i really cannot understand that so few people use dynamic blogrolls like freshblogs (does not accept any new blogs for the moment but is the most comprehensive) or blo.gs or blogrolling (which is the most popular though it seems to have the fewest blogs with timestamps in the database).

The banner was advertising techno and DJ equipment for many months but I subverted the whole process by writing a few entries on relatively obscure early twentieth century Viennese intellectuals Weininger and Krause. The banner briefly switched to providing some philosophy search suggestions, then gave up and became a blank space brought to me by google. I am very proud of myself. I feel as if I have beaten the system.

My site has been nominated for Best Music Weblog in the 2004 Bloggies.

It's up against Moby.com. You know what to do - vote for someone that isn't me or Moby.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 19 January 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My site LEETV isn't a Blog but allow me to plug it anyway. Pop Heaven is the section where I "do" music.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

They totally dropped the ball on the music blog category - a lot of the best music blogs made it to the top 20, but the final 5 nominees leave something to be desired. I'm not really talking about Cha Cha Cha or Chromewaves - those are fine, but more about Moby (which isn't a fucking music blog!) and 75 Or Less (which is more of a webzine). Lameness. NYPLM in particular wuz ROBBED.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I have absolutelu no idea how I ended up nominated. I think it's because Tom Coates of plasticbag.org wrote about who to vote for on his website and included me as one of his favourites.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It probably was Tom's doing, James. I guess he has a lot of power in these things.

I figure, well, this Bloggies thing is mostly for a lot of folks who are primarily political/tech/personal blog fans, right? So of course the really hardcore music blogs get shafted, because the majority of voters don't read them and they go for who they know.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Cleary Ms. Maura Johnston, Esq. needs to work her connections within the 3133+ blogger cabal in order to secure NYLPM its props within the community. That, & Tom shd schedule more Meet 'n' Greets. & serve some shrimp next time, for the luvva.

Is U2log nominated again? I'm deathly curious, yet not curious enough to click on the Bloggie linkie.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 19 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Monday, 19 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I nominated NYLPM and XRRF and what happened? I ended up on the shortlist.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Tuesday, 20 January 2004 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

NYLPM was on the shortlist once or twice when these things started. It wasn't exactly overflowing with updates around the nominations time though. When we were first nominated (2000 or so) we were easily the best music weblog in the world (U2log won obv) but nowadays we're a lot lazier and there's a lot more competition - thanks if you did nominate us though.

Bridie L, Sunday, 14 March 2004 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been holding off from doing this up until now, as my blog isn't really a music blog (although it certainly has its place)... but I've just re-launched a series of postings which first ran last year, called Which decade is Tops for Pops?

What I'm doing is comparing the Top 10 UK singles for this week in 1964, 1974, 1984, 1994 and 2004, looking at each chart position in turn over a series of ten postings. So today, I'm looking at all the Number 10s, tomorrow the Number 9s etc.

Each posting is accompanied with a short MP3 medley of the five songs for that day, which you can listen to, place in order of preference, and then vote on in the comments. I'll then be aggregating scores for each day, and plotting the fortunes of each decade day by day until all 50 songs have been evaluated. At the end of the 10 days, we will therefore have scientifically proved which decade truly is Tops for Pops! (Last year's winner: the 1970s.)

OK, so it's more than a little playful / whimisical / self-satirising, but it may amuse. As most of my readers are definitely non-ILM types (mine is firmly a "personal" blog), it would be interesting to have input from those who are.

Anthony Is Right is currently getting a nice amount of hits from Sasha Frere-Jones's site. My inner high schooler (who credits SF-J's review of the first Timbaland album for making him want to find Prince's "Ballad of Dorothy Parker") is doing backflips.

since it disappeared after the Great Crash of Xmas '04, mine is Blackmail Is My Life, named for the Kinji Fukasaku movie, and in no way related to real or imagined blackmail, just music, film and politics. oh and occasionally a post about how boring it is to be a clerk at a highbrow video store, which usually leads to some film discussion. i need to get back to that.

Sometimes (but not lately) I post on the Nick-biqitous The Turntable.

The third annual instalment of the Troubled Diva Which Decade Is Tops For Pops? project started yesterday.

This comprises a daily rundown of the UK top 10 singles from this week in 1965, 1975, 1985, 1995 and 2005, starting with the #10s on the first day and working up to the #1s on the last day. An MP3 medley is provided of each day's five selections, one from each year. (Yesterday's selection: The Moody Blues, Johnny Wakelin, Prince, Alex Party, Ciara feat Petey Pablo.)

Readers are then asked to rank the five tracks in order of preference, casting votes in the comments box. Points are assigned, and cumulative scores aggregated for each decade as the ten days progress - thus scientifically proving which decade truly is Tops For Pops.

Last year, 1964 romped home with a clear majority, thanks to a massive swell of affection for Merseybeat. The year before, 1973 won by a whisker, following an extra tie-break round. This year, the smart money might well be on 1985: a strong week in an otherwise dud year. Historically, the 1990s and 2000s do badly - possibly because the bulk of my readership is of a Certain Age, and leans towards the music of their youth. This never fails to irk me - especially with a relatively strong 2005 Top Ten to scrutinise.

Anyway, maximum participation is encouraged - it's not to be taken too seriously, but it may amuse.

Which Decade Is Tops For Pops? returns for its fourth year, analysing/comparing/voting upon the Top 10 UK singles from my birthday week in 2006, 1996, 1986, 1976, and 1966.

The Number 10 singles are already up: Pinkerton's Assorted Colours, Pluto Shervington, Double, Technohead and Shayne Ward. Later today, you'll be ranking Sandie Shaw, R&J Stone, James Brown, The Bluetones and Hi-Tack.

The best I could do with a cheap mic and free programming. Just tiny songs, the base vocals and percussion done in one take improvs, and then layered & echoes.
I've kind of been putting this around because I just wonder what it sounds like to people
since I've never considered myself a musician or a singer. Mostly it's just something for fun.
I think I like "Rhetorections," I'd redo that one if I could.

Just started this. Never blogged before. Have previously written about music purely for my own edification and as a memory aid for looking back (and no doubt this will be much the same, though I will make more of an effort with the style). First post is about 2006, my thoughts on the Knife, Villalobos and Ornette Coleman. It will be updated regulalry, will be mainly about minimal, though far from exclusively, and will include the odd mix knocked up by myself or a friend, which reminds me I'm going to put up a nice dubstep mix from him now.

Hey-

For about 6 years the Acute Records website was just a single white page with a bit of text and the phrase "new site soon" up top. Finally, about a year ago, it had a "design", some sort of Acute house style, but was still just a tease. Then, after much work and with a great deal of help from Rob from Catsup Plate, we got a real website up there. But I didn't officially "announce" it because I was waiting to start the Acute blog. So after a few more months, and with a great deal of help from Max of artificeeternity.com, we finally set up the blog. And I still didn't say anything. I had posted an initial intro post, but wanted to wait until there was a more substantial post. Well now there is, so I'm here to tell you about it.

Consider the Acute Records website officially "launched"! You can see it here:
http://acuterecords.com

And feel free to check out the Acute Records Blog here:
http://acuterecords.com/blog/

Why a blog? Why not. You can read all about it in the first post, but basically the blog will be an outlet for the discussion of music, the stuff we're releasing, the stuff we want to release, the stuff we wished we released. Old music, new music, tours, radio, interviews etc. Like the original Acute geocities website, it'll mostly just be the rants of a fan, nothing too authoritative or academic. Hopefully it will be fun, maybe a bit informative and maybe a bit funny at times.

My goal is to have at least one post a week because I want to make sure you come back and keep checking it...I want to be in your RSS reader, I want to be in your blogroll. Most importantly, I want you to comment and take part. The first real post is up, an extensive and excessive summation of my appearance on the Beats in Space radio show. Don't worry, I'll probably never post anything that long again.

So please come check it out and let me know what you think. We're still working the kinks out but I'm pretty psyched about it. And look for the Fire Engines CD Hungry Beat on October 2nd and for news beyond that...well you'll have to join the mailing list and keep checking the blog!

Thanks,

Dan

Tastes Like You

This is basically going to be Never Been Kissed: the Blog.

Popular kids, here I come!

Here's something I wrote about it: I'm going into my senior year of high school. Obviously, I'll come across a lot of immature, Laguna Beach-ish drama. Rather than just observing this drama, I should write about it. So, I'll give students fake names and log their struggles (note: writing to be entertaining and xanga-ish). My own stories, too. So, what does this have to do with music? Well, in addition to logging these stories, I will also post a track that fits the situation (or seems to, at least). "The Soundtrack of Your Life." And these songs will generally be those same artists that are popular with teens--the John Mayers and Plain White Tees of the music world. It's a look into today's teens and the way music mirrors--or seems to mirror--real life.

I've created a new music blog to discuss and simply present various styles and artists from a diverse array of non-Western musics.

I half-jokingly described tonight to a friend as "refried post-colonialism meets DIY ethnomusicology" While that's fairly accurate, I would hope it's not THAT pretentious.

I'd like to start a blog, only so I could call it:

the new dance sound of detroit.

or if the subtitle was too lame, then change it to: to whomever thinks you can't dance to architecture.

But alas it'll probably never happen.

mehlt, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

Hrm. That quote always bothered me. Not only can you write about music, but you can also dance to architecture.

Mordechai Shinefield, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Didn't Elvis Costello say that? I think that answers your question.

I can tell you at least, that writing about architecture is very much like dancing to music, however.

mehlt, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 18:53 (seventeen years ago)

I thought Zappa said it? That would also answer the question.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 19:02 (seventeen years ago)

This is attributed usually to Eno, no?

fukasaku tollbooth, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

The End of Hard Rock: 1990 -- 2001

Nu-metal isn't Hard Rock? Just asking. I hate that stuff. Today, I stumbled onto that awful song where the singer screams "I'm doing the best I ever did!/I'm doing the best that I can!/Now, go away!" Terrible.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 05:20 (seventeen years ago)

Depends on who you ask. Most people are so confused about what Nu-metal is that they don't have a solid definition. I kind of had to include it here, for the time line.

winston, Sunday, 16 March 2008 20:10 (seventeen years ago)

No, I don't have "To The Shores..." but I have a CD called "The Zoo Uncaged 1978-1982" that has a lot more tracks by many of those same bands. I don't really wanna post that though cause I'm trying to concentrate on vinyl.

The House of Love thing I just found on slsk somewhere.

I am posting obscure post-punk 7" singles now for anyone who cares. I've got plenty of them ripped and the sleeves scanned, so should be able to keep the blog going on a more frequent basis than before. First installment is The Insex and The Tea Set:

Windy Weather

I also fixed that Gods Gift sleeve from back in October so it has the proper colour now of what the sleeve looks like in real life.

From most recent to kinda recent to first this year: notes on:A Tribute To Blind Alfred Reed; reissues of Ed Sanders' Beer Cans on the Moon and Sanders' Truck Stop; Cat Power's Jukebox Music; Nashville Scene Country 2007 ballot and comments (over 5,000 words, most of it on non-mainstream, though didn't seem like an eventful year in coutryoid while going through it)

I've flaked out on keeping up with my b-log. If I don't update it by the end of the month, then I will pull the plug, or at least conduct a telethon on public access tv during which I threaten the entire time to pull the plug on the whole affair.

m coleman — good piece but I think disco was more progressive, and less of a betrayal of the "revolutionary" 60s, than you give it credit for!

maybe it's just because I hear the songs filtered through the eventual racism and homophobia of mainstream american "DISCO SUCKS!!" boorishness, but disco has always felt like an authentic continuation of ~hippie dreams~ about free love and equality — a dancefloor utopia where the only negativity allowed is the deep melancholy springing from the sobering knowledge that this can't last forever and at some point we all have to go back to the real world

And that really shows, too! Love the idea of sitting down with some people and listen/talk/write about music. Great stuff and inspired writing.

And we're back, after a 6-week summer hiatus whilst everyone went on holiday or cycled from Land's End to John O'Groats.

This one has been fermenting for some time now, but I've finally got a decent start and really looking forward to continuing this. A look at each and every song to hit the Billboard Modern Rock top ten between January 1990 and December 1999. the alternative to what.

I reclaimed an old domain and didn't have any idea what to do with it, so I decided to point it at tumblr and make my own "1001 Albums You Have To Hear Before You Die" list. No commentary (though comments are enabled). Just purty pictures.

Plz to disregard that post from August...I got to 182 and was pooped out.

However, I started a new thing called Stacks. dog latin is one of my cohorts (shout out!), and so are three other friends. We each get a day of the week, post a track, and write a few words about it. No bigs. Everyone's got a different approach and everyone's got different tastes and it works somehow. http://heystacks.tumblr.com/

can i ask you a tech-related question, dog latin? is it not possible to comment in tumblr-blogs?

It is. Because I changed the theme on the blog, though, it made the Disqus comments go all wonky. I'm going to redesign soon and add the comment feature back.

Thank you. I'll probably write something once a week, so check back midweek or follow me on Twitter for updates (@durutti74). Like I implied, I'm new to all this so any advice or help is welcome. Thank you again.

The link is underneath the soundcloud player, where it says nightmoves. I'm happy you guys like the mix! I've been working on a lounge mix that's almost finished. Also recently found good 70's dirty bar bands that I'm excited about.
