Is anyone going to this? How far is the festival from LA?

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I've definitely been thinking about it but the folks who I was planning to go with from OC -- we were only going to go the first day at this point -- are holding off for a while. We're figuring one day passes aren't going to sell out immediately, as has usually been the case in the past (then again, with that lineup...). I've never been but I'm guessing it's about 2 1/2, 3 hours out of LA?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 14 February 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.. its about 2-3 hours away. Far enough of a distance to be life threatening after youve been blasted by the desert sun for 10 hours and youre trying to get home. I recommend staying the night over before you go back from whence you came.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Saturday, 14 February 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Coachella 2004 going to be the first outdoor rock fest I've attended in five years?

dean! (deangulberry), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

ill be there workin.

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Saturday, 14 February 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

there's a possiblity i might go as part of a dallas road trip. largely to visit some southern CA folx though (that's why I'm asking about distance to LA)

Viva La Sam (thatgirl), Saturday, 14 February 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It was not especially hot when I was there in '02, it's too early in the year for that. It also gets kind of chilly at night, so prepare for that. And it was a 2 1/4 hr drive from Pasadena, so probably a good 3 hrs from the west side.

nickn (nickn), Sunday, 15 February 2004 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm definitely going for Saturday.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Sunday, 15 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i am going ! is the campground next to coachella as bad as it sounds? ive heard ugly things about the shower situation (not that i care but i will be travelling with two others).

kephm, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

bump

kephm, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll probably be there but I have no idea about the camping situation.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going Saturday

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

please bring pie

kephm, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll be there Saturday.

I haven't camped at the Coachella grounds but I heard that it was pretty well monitored, which is a bad thing. Lake Cahuilla is close. We stayed there. It's not the best site but there's a ton of people there and drinking and partying .. etc.

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

what kind of pie?

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

How fucking Doris Day would I be? "Coachella, fucking rock on, ohh, hey, would anyone like a slice of pie?"

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Yay pie! Lemon meringue plz.

I still need to get a Saturday pass.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that I have seen the transvestite Ned ... I thought you said "Saturday dress."

dean! (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

well monitored is a bad thing, i am going to look into the Lake campground.

luna, any pie ! i hope to get a seious case of the munchies* at least once during the weekend.

kephm, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I hope so ! I may throw a few pies at the pixies

kephm, Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not bringing you pie then.

luna (luna.c), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not going.

Thought about going, then remembered you actually need cash for airfare too, as teleportation is out.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It is????

But is navy still the new black?

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Mexican is the current black, Dean....

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i will focus on fruit filled pies if the plane goes down in flames

kephm, Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I'd do.

luna (luna.c), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:46 (twenty-two years ago)

im the only one going sunday

Pablo Cruise (chaki), Thursday, 26 February 2004 05:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I wanna go Sunday, too - there are too many bands I want to see.

SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT. i just got back from a visit to the new york eye & ear infirmary. i have significant sinus-related fluid built up in my left ear, and i've been prohibited from flying on thursday. goodbye, coachella.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

noworknoworknowork!

Me either.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Lauren, that sucks! (Could you send your ticket to Ned?)

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

luna (luna.c), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i wish i could, but i have guestlist not an actual ticket.

thanks, guys. i actually feel fine, which is makes things even more annoying! i'll definitely be there for juleps, h.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

sweet! at least there's a silver lining to your cloud, then.

hstencil, Monday, 26 April 2004 18:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, Lauren had mentioned this to me earlier and I was terribly sad for her! How unfun. :-( Hope the ear gets better soon.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

What is the capacity at this venue and how hot is it going to be?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

huge/hotter than hell.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

It IS the desert. Extrapolate accordingly.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 April 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I saw somewhere that capacity was 68,000. Sold out.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my XGF went to the first coachella (99?) to see V00redoms and she mentions to this day how insanely hot, crowded, and dusty it was. hopefully they'll work all this out because it sounds like the least humane conditions of any outdoor festival to date!

"It's like woodstock, but in the desert in the summer!!!"

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 26 April 2004 23:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(yes i know it's not summer, but it will be 100 degrees+)

six years pass...

Anyone else hear the rumor that the organizers were waiting for a firm no from the Smiths' to not headline for eight million US dollars? Sounds plausible, of course.

Cunga, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 21:10 (fifteen years ago)

Very plausible.

Cut Copy's tour schedule announcement yesterday omits Southern California.

I saw this and I was all "ooh Pulp", but then I remembered that they're likely to only be selling the 3-day passes again this year. Way to much money and I only like to go for a couple hours on one day.

Did anyone go for just 1 day last year? Is it still possible?

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 07:08 (fourteen years ago)

did anyone make a funny poster where LMFAO is headlining with Chumbawamba? those things are like so funny.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 08:54 (fourteen years ago)

i wish i was reading it right now

billstevejim, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 08:54 (fourteen years ago)

Only surprise reunion on this is fIREHOSE, no? Anyway, hope this means Pulp tours. And fIREHOSE, for that matter.

LMFAO would have been a better fest headliner than Black Keys. And maybe even Radiohead, at this point.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 12:48 (fourteen years ago)

Uh no, I'm pretty sure LMFAO would be much worse than either of those, even if I think Black Keys are ridiculous in that headlining position.

Is there any word on how this is going to be split over the two weekends? Same lineup each weekend? Splitting the lineup in half?

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:26 (fourteen years ago)

I'll at best concede they'd be equally lame. But I know I'd at least stick around to see the first couple of LMFAO songs before beating traffic, but I'd leave well before the Black Keys played a note. Not that I totally hate the Black Keys or anything, but they have arenas of their own to fill these days.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah I'll actually slightly stan for the Black Keys, I ended up seeing one of their New Years shows here in Chicago last January and surprised myself by enjoying it. Dudes put on a decent show, but I don't think its going to translate in the least to a headlining slot in the desert.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 10 January 2012 14:36 (fourteen years ago)

four years pass...

Curious about the logistics of booking the exact same lineup two weekends in a row. That just seems like a near-impossible challenge to me

Evan R, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 19:41 (nine years ago)

There's something that's happened with large destination music festivals over the last couple of decades that I can't put my finger on, but this quote from the wikipedia entry seems to get at something

Coachella is considered a trendsetter in music and fashion. Singer Katy Perry said, "The lineup always introduces the best of the year for the rest of the year."

mh 😏, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:02 (nine years ago)

Bands seem willing to book west coast tours around it, and even if the $ for an act like Mitski isn't wild, the exposure is prob worth it

Curious about the logistics of booking the exact same lineup two weekends in a row. That just seems like a near-impossible challenge to me

tour the southeast to California, play first weekend. tour up the west coast to about Denver, head back to California, play 2nd weekend. I suspect a lot of bands will be touring versions of this routing during those two weeks

though she denies it to the press, (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Tuesday, 3 January 2017 20:52 (nine years ago)

For mid-sized bands it makes a certain sense; you get two lucrative gigs locked in instead of one. But I imagine some acts aren't available to play both weeks, and it's gotta sting passing on a prime booking because they're only available one weekend, esp with the festival market being so crowded and competitive now

Evan R, Tuesday, 3 January 2017 21:09 (nine years ago)
