lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Lookit that, I'm back in 4th place! To think I wanted to trade with loser, fifth place teams like Monkey Robot Fun!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Tuesday, 11 May 2004 22:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Trade offer coming at you, bitch. Look alive!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is Monkey Robot Fun? I countered his trade offer and didn't hear back.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hi, Matt! Sorry - I didn't mean to give you the cold shoulder. I should've sent a li'l note.

Airing dirty fantasy laundry is always classic, BTW.

I be Robot Fun. I'm aworkin' on a counterin'. Also, I can't access Yahoo! @ work, which SuCkS.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

For proper smack talking purposes we need a list of users and their team names posted. Then again, I am in like 12th place, so it isn't like I have much to celebrate.

earlnash, Wednesday, 12 May 2004 01:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Thee Team & Manager List to the rescue.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Dyson's team (on a Monday mind you) batted .400 with 5 HRs, and 8 Runs/RBIs. Nice work.

who'd a thunk it - chuck finley leading the majors in hr's¡ + luis gonzález (who hit 3 on monday) right behind him¡

as for riske i finally dropped the bum. i stil don't like koch tho.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Insert Tawny Kitaen joke.

That's STEVE Finley w/ the 11 HRs.

The Mondesi Fiasco has devestated the Texas Metrosexuals. We've dropped from 6th to 10th.

The guys are so upset that some are forgetting to moisturize before games, while others have tried to comfort themselves with some shoe-shopping.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 13 May 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Free team-wide exfoliation is your only hope.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Thursday, 13 May 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Seeing head 'roid pup Bonds go below .400, lesser pup D'Angelo-oh-no-not-Him-enez refused to be outdone and dropped below the .200 line.

after an oil change and a tune up the precision otto's are once again firing on all cylinders and making their way up the leaderboard. but looming on the horizon is the thrown rod that is derek lowe. i know if i sit him he'll pitch a no-no.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

My team IS a clone of the mid-90s Rockies - hit like a mutha, but those damn pitchers cannot go 2 consecutive starts w/out severely sucking like an industrial-strength Hoover in a trade show.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

to whomever it was that picked up orlando husdon: i hate your guts.

as soon as i give up and drop the o-dog he starts hitting like mad and never looks back.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

that should be "hudson" - i know.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Guess who!

I'm managing That Team, aren't I - that one team that everyone gets irked at because of bad trade talk etiquette & annoying waiver wire pickups whose name & identity are lost to the ages because no one can remember MONKEY ROBOT FUN! But you'll remember me come September when I'm in 9th place, oh yes!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 14 May 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i am giving you the finger right now.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 14 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

You should be flipping off Pronounced Miller! Languishing in mediocre at the start of season, we're now the one of the lone greens in a sea of deteriorating red! My team AVG had been in the bottom quartile, but now is tied for second! The American dream is a reality!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

And what I said about Voltron?? MNF would turn that tag team into the Go Bots!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:28 (twenty-one years ago)

And and and whatever happened to the Shawn Estes Experience? Released with no fanfare, only to rebound with 6.1 IP and 2 ER??

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have drunk of the sweet ambrosia of KICKING YOUR FANNIES, and I will not be stopped! (i.e. someone shut me up before I get obnoxious.)

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 14 May 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Thus was named "The Estes Principle".

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

but you do realize I grabbed Carlos Silva (5-0 w/ an ERA less than half of Estes and I don't have to worry about him pitching in Colorado every other start) for Estes.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, very savvy on Silva.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 14 May 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Leee, I encourage you to greater heights of obnoxiousness for then, when the inevitable crash occurs, your fall will be heard throughout Christendom and will serve as a warning to those who wish to take your place!

BULLSHIT TRADE.

Get real, popshots.

Gygax will take care of this nonsense, I trust.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 15 May 2004 05:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't get it dude,
more details, what bullshit trade,
what is wrong, et cet

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

That trade is pretty bunk.

Seasonal Ranks:

La Flaneurs
Beltran = #1
Sexson = #82 (but has been on the DL, and will be til the end of the month if not sooner according to very positive reports).

Monkey Robot Fun
Choi = #116
Nix = #141
Guardado = #126

Let's have a vote:
Broheems: Nay
gygax!: Nay

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 15 May 2004 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's have a look at the ACTUAL numbers instead of just semi-arbitrary numerical rankings based on the vagaries of Yahoo!'s scoring system (before I go bury my head in some pre-final circuit designing "goodness"):

Choi VS Sexson:
Choi: 95 ABs, 15 runs, 9 HRs, 20 RBIs, .885 OPS (.348 / .537), .232 BA
Sexson: 83 ABs, 20 runs, 9 HRs, 22 RBIs, .958 OPS (.344 / .614), .241 BA

Beltran VS Nix:
Beltran: 127 ABs, 29 runs, 10 HRs, 28 RBI, SBs - 10 / 1, 1.033 OPS (.395 / .638), .299 BA
Nix: 80 ABs, 16 runs, 6 HRs, 16 RBI, SBs - 0 / 1, 1.030 OPS (.368 / .622), .325 BA

Since there is an obvious discrepancy between Beltran & Nix (like, DUH), I'm giving up Eddie Guardado as well, who has 5 saves and a 6.00 K / BB ratio in 15 IPs. The SB loss is cushioned by the gain in saves (a stat where LF has a big fat goose egg). I had offered someone else (a hitter) in Guardado's place when I initially made the trade offer, but Le Flaneurs wanted Every-Day, so that's the way it is. Also, what I read has Sexson coming back in no less than 1 month, so I'm not sure if "positive" is the right word.

Far be it from me to take offense at your reactions (hi Broheems, you potty mouth you!) to what's obviously a contentious trade, but before y'all decide to burn it at the stake, take a look beyond the "brand names" and see what's going on.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

The Starfighters!: yea. If La Flaneurs agree to it, then WTF is yr problem? It's a very patronizing attitude methinks.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:32 (twenty-one years ago)

This is how Galileo must've felt when he discovered penicilin (sic cough).

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 15 May 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's have a look at the ACTUAL numbers instead of just semi-arbitrary numerical rankings based on the vagaries of Yahoo!'s scoring system

Well well, Prehistoric Caveman Manager David, these vagaries are the stats that are being employed for ranking of players in our league. There is nothing vague about them (See the Fantasy Baseball Sign-up thread if you want to complain about vagaries of the stats).

Choi vs. Sexson:
Choi had a fluky first month and is now reduced to platooning with Conine at first after going 4-29 (.138 w/ no HRs) in the past 2 weeks. Sexson will be an everyday player in a hitter's park when he returns to AZ. Choi is a career .216/.340/.438, Sexson is a career .272/.349/.529.

Nix vs. Beltran:
Nix lost his starting job in Texas so I don't even need to write thing else here.

Guardado:
I suppose it's mere coincidence that you're trading away a reliever for arguably the worst team in baseball (ie, he won't be getting many save chances). The only thing Every Day is gonna be doing is counting down Every Day til he gets out of Seattle.

You are exploiting some very advantageous hot starts by young unproven players to try to get the best fantasy player in the game and another veteran.

I think the 3 players you offered for Beltran is legit, but throwing Sexson in tips the scales unfairly. Every other baseball head I've talked to about this proposal (okay, only 2 people this morning) says it's a joke.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 15 May 2004 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: my "vagaries" comment - I was under the impression (and one of the people I talked to this afternoon agrees!) that the Yahoo! rankings are based primarily on THEIR default stat settings (probably AVG, HR, RBI, etc etc etc) instead of being based on the combination of stats that we're using in the league. If this is true, then my comment's 2 legit 2 quit.

And I'd like to know where you got this "Nix lost his starting job" stuff - he's just been getting days off against lefties. Though, you know, Buck, Brian Jordan ain't all that.

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 15 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

haha, Matt I wasn't trying to be "patronizing". This kind of thing happens all the time. Debating the validity of trade proposals, that is. League members have the right to vet these things; i mean, that's what that "vote" button on the trade page is *there* for. There have been a lot of trades in our league already and this is the first time I've had a problem with any of 'em! So yeah, I was registering my vote and trying to draw attention to this one; encouraging our participants to take a close look at this one, if you will. Hey, if it goes through, it goes through. I'm just saying .. in a pay league like ESPN or something this one wouldn't have a snowball's etc of being approved..

Beltran is the linchpin. He's putting up what would be MVP type numbers, if KC didn't suck so bad (add in all those LOVELY stolen bases and, well, what gygax said.) Everyday Eddie and some dime-a-dozen OF are hardly adequate compensation.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 15 May 2004 18:52 (twenty-one years ago)

yo Broheems my man
I know what the button's for
that wasn't my beef

I was complaining
about your/gygax!'s tone

but I understand,
this is all democracy,
one team one vote YES!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Saturday, 15 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

it is a lop-sided trade, but i don't really feel strongly enough about it to interfere.

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 15 May 2004 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

what he said. you make deals with senor popshots, you askin' for trouble.

bnw (bnw), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Nix is riding the pine... ain't nothing but righties on friday night and he did not get one at bat, friend. your trade still stanks.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sore neck", sez the Rangers.

If the trade sucked, I think La Flaneurs would've rejected it outright.

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 16 May 2004 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Why you people are arguing about trades, you are missing the neck and neck/back and forth battle for 11th place between the Nash Ramblers and Pudge & The Studs.

earlnash, Sunday, 16 May 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

that trade's crazy and will look crazier if/when beltran's a yank but it ain't vetolevel crazy

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 16 May 2004 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Choi is actually in a 3-way platoon with Conine and Wil Cordero. He has been benched indefinitely for striking out in his last 6 ABs.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

and Leee... in what was documented upthread as the Estes Principle, Silva has self-destructed at Comiskey.

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 16 May 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

after being bashed about his last couple starts and getting unceremoniously dumped, fat sir sidney ponson pitched his 2nd cg shutout of the year this evening against the angels. estes principle?

j.q. higgins, Monday, 17 May 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait - so how many vetoes does it take to have a trade turned down? Because if it only takes one or two, then the fact that this trade got turned down is a big fat steaming pile of &^$&*@(*@(@*&(!&.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

League Votes
When you select the League Votes option, accepted trades can be overturned by a vote of at least 1/3 of the members of your league. All league member votes, including the one cast by the commissioner, count equally. Even if no protests are made, the trade will not be processed until the time allotted to protest pending trades in your league has elapsed.

so at least 7 managers voted against it.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I want names for my shitlist! When I'm king, you punks will be first against the wall, and I'll get Randy Johnson to peg you with kickballs until the word FRANKLIN appears on your forehead. (BTW, BNW had the only legit reason for vetoing the trade - I'm a poor man's Cam Bonifay.)

PS - Don't mind me and my ig'nance of the rules of this league. I haven't gotten any sleep in about 36 hours, I'm at work, the coffee tastes like burnt styrofoam, and I just got off a conference call where I flailed and flopped around like a beached dolphin.

Also - if owners and the commish were this proactive / nosy in real life, the Royals might not have gotten stuck w/ Neifi Perez & Roberto Hernandez, and the Yankees' payroll might only be around $150 million.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

hmmm.. this trade proposal played out pretty dramatically in my absence over the weekend. i was aware it was a risky and perhaps controversial trade when i countered friday, and harbored a twinge of regret for a bit, but i didn't really think it was a total bullshit trade. it seems to me the perceived lopsidedness is a bit of a red herring - you'd all prefer to see beltran on a team languishing at the bottom of the table if you can't have him, rather than being concerned that i'm undervaluing him. i have enough zeroes on my daily stats that sub-beltran production at 2 or 3 positions might outweigh beltran plus nothing.

i guess it's possible that i just have no clue what i'm talking about. i am pretty much at the bottom of the table, and i did hang on to ponson and his ballooning era for weeks, only to dump him right before his nice outing...

maybe i'll take a closer look, but at some point, i think the 'here goes nothing' strategy takes over...

the leglo (the leglo), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:21 (twenty-one years ago)

leglo, IMO you could've pulled all 3 of those guys for beltran. wait til sexson comes off the DL and you'll get a huge bump on offense.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, it's just tough waiting for a bump in offense from sexson while i'm still waiting for the bump in pitching from prior.

the leglo (the leglo), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Gygax!: 20-Sided Counselor to the Fantasy Owner.

I think you should schedule a sit-down with Sabean & tell him where he screwed up. I mean, Alfonzo, what the HELL kind of asshat signing was that? ;)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

David, remember last year I attempted to trade Odalis Perez and David Bell for Paul Quantrill and Albert Pujols and I heard about it for about 2 weeks? I'm just offering my opinion.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, I know. Sorry if my ballbusting is hitting below the belt. I think I was an uberbitch when it came to vetoing trades last year (did I bitch about that Pujols one)? It's only deserving that I get my comeuppance.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, no need cut trades off completely, but why not Maggs/Guardado for Beltran?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm working on it, g - don't you worry.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:32 (twenty-one years ago)

so beltran is up for grabs¿ hmmm.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

dyson: if the price is right, i'm sure he is.

David: good, if you wanted to make me feel bad, it worked. :-O

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 17 May 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, now I am totally confused, and I don't think it's because I've gotten 3 hrs sleep the past 2 days.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 17 May 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

ok, beltran is pretty much off the market for a little bit, while i research a bit more.

but yeah, everyone has their price.

re: Sabean

Peter Gammons chats about Brian Sabean that the Giants “are going to go through a long rebuilding process. His moves have been to try and win it with Bonds. Alfonzo apparently was a mistake. Although Boston, Oakland and San Diego wanted him badly too. In the eyes of most baseball people, Sabean is still one of the best in the game. If there is an opening, don't be surprised if he moves next year.”

I'm actually surprised I'm still in the middle of the pack, considering the gaping holes i have at 2b and 3b. I guess we have a "deep" league' so most everybody is stuck with a few no-name losers clogging up the roster.

Dyson, you, sir, exhibit the worst qualities of the jackaninny who continues to play an outfielder currently inhabiting the DL -- when you have aquired the least modicum of talent, then feel free to judge my precious.

Like the Red Sox, I too am stuck with Pokey Reece, replacing the blinding talent that is Placido Polanco while he is on the DL.

Eric Chavez needs to get into gear, this hitting .221 stuff is major suxors.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 21:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Good news is that Hawkins seems to be moving into the closer role with the Cubs more of late, as he picked up two saves last weekend and continues to pitch very well.

I did make a fortunate move off of the free agents recently getting Cleveland Indian's rookie starting pitcher Cliff Lee, who has gotten two wins and pitched well in three starts. Now I really need Zito and Mike Hampton to get their act together, especially Hampton.

earlnash, Tuesday, 18 May 2004 22:02 (twenty-one years ago)

leee - perhaps you are ill-informed or perhaps you are merely a fool - said outfielder is playing tonight and your saviour is single handedly responsible for keeps my team's fielding percentage in the league basement¡ not to mention the other atrocities he has committed against my franchise and somehow without even spending the minimum team requirement of 2 weeks on the dysabled list.

i accept your challenge, sir and you shall perish just like the 72 before you. choose you weapon¡

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The point loss is more due to one poor night of hitting coupled w/ equally craptastic pitching (THANKS D-TRAIN; THROW ANOTHER BALL YOU LEGGY BASTARD) than any widespread epidemic. Tho, really, my pitching is looking pheff.

I blame hstencil.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Stupid Mets are killing my closers :( I am going to bench Nomo tonight, so it is guaranteed he will throw a three hit shutout w/ like 10 K's.

you're welcome, manny has been exactly what i'd hoped he'd be. brett myers has done more to harm my team than anything else i've done with the possible exception of making aubrey huff my second pick. i would have been better off trading johnson and matsui for manny straight up.

wanted to give you guys a heads up - now that i have dropped josh phelps he has (following the o-dog's lead) begun his inevitable hitting streak - for this is what players do when i drop them.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 19 May 2004 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Lance Berkman-Turner Overdrive is on fire! And that's double good news for me since (1) he's an Astro and (b) he's a Texas Metrosexual. The guy's OBP (.506) and OPS (1.111) are second only to Mr. Barry's in the NL. He has been drawing walks like crazy all year, even early in the season when his avg. was hovering between .270 and .280, and that was coming off a sub-par year last season. Now he's hitting the ball all over the yard and driving in honey bunches of runs.

Let's all appreciate Mr. Berkman.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 20 May 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

My team seems to be able to hit and score, the pitching is tops in wins near the top in ks, but I am getting killed by the lack of walks, fielding and saves. My team is completely anti-Moneyball I suppose.

Baker needs to get going and make Hawkins the closer.

My wins could even be more impressive as the A's blew two leads for Zito, the Mets two leads for Glavine and Mike Hampton has zero wins so far this year.

I had one week where I lost 70 points (-58 in two days), other than that everything has been somewhat consistant.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

so what do you think, should i start lowe tonight or leave him on the pine? the guy's been struggling with his control and he's facing one of the more patient teams in the league, it could get ugly. on the other hand he's due to come around and from what i've been reading from varitek, wallace, and lowe he's had some breaks go against him as he hasn't been pitching as badly as his numbers indicate (last week in tampa being an exception).

i think i'll play him, what the hell.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

He's pitching against Redman, right? I'd bank on him either doing well against Oakland, or the Sox scoring enough runs to alleviate any crap he barfs up. HOWEVER, remember that some of the A's might want revenge for what was obviously NOT an FU gesture directed at Oakland following Game 4 (and/or 5) of last year's ALDS.

But, yeah, he's pitched fine when the defense can actually field the ball behind him, or when the umps let things slide around 2nd base, or when the umps don't squeeze the strike zone, or when etc etc etc. But if the Derek Lowe face returns, WATCH OUT!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 17:54 (twenty-one years ago)

in my other league someone's trying to extract berkman from me, and i've asked for jake peavy and david ortiz in return. he wants another player from me as well, so i was thinking of offering david wells or someone along those lines. am i doing the right thing here? i've had lance for three years now, and i've learned to never trust him. but this seems as if it could be his legit post-2000 breakout year

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 27 May 2004 13:54 (twenty-one years ago)

d00d, don't trade him now, he's still 2nd in the NL on OPS behind Mr. Barry. Plus, he has hit something like 6 home runs in the last 7 days! He's been as complete a hitter as there is for the past month. Hitting for average and power, driving in runs and drawing walks at an incredible pace. I just don't know how trading him for anybody other than Barry would be a valuable trade for you.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Berkman is probably a safe call till the allstar break. He has had a couple of seasons in recent years where he hits like a freak until the break and then completely falls apart. Didn't he have something like 35 homers or some crazy number at the break a couple of years ago and then finished around 40?

earlnash, Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was 2002 I believe. Last year was just down year for him all around. He didn't drive in a run in April and was never able to get the average going either after that.

He's just been a monster for the last month now and I'm kinda surprised he hasn't been getting more hype.

boldbury (boldbury), Thursday, 27 May 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

And for what it's worth, Berkman is currently the #1 LF on CBS Sportsline's player rankings by position.

Monkey Robot Antifun in the house. Lost 10+ points in BA, & equally woeful chunks of ground in OPS-related stuff, no one can go deep, Magglio's out for the next week, Giles is still 6 weeks away, and (the bitterest pill) early returns on the Melvin "Boots the Chemist" Mora / Odalis "The Big O" Perez swap are quite lopsided - MM is tattooing (and throwing away) the ball with the same excelling consistency since he left my team (leading his team into 4th place!), while OP has pitched well enough to garner 3 wins for any team that's not the Expos or (unfortunately) the Dodgers. Oh, and the gain in fielding percentage I hoped w/ Mora's 9 errors taking flight has been nicely offset by the rest of my team making like funnel-happy frat pledges.

I'm laughing on the inside, really.

I always ask this dopey question when it comes to trade talks, but: you're trading FOR Abreu & Lieberthal, right?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-one years ago)

obviously, lo duca's value is really high right now, lieberthal's is really low. unless there's something i don't know about one or the other of them (are any insiders saying lieberthal is cooked, or that lo duca has changed his hitting approach?), i wouldn't expect their fantasy baseball value to differ a whole lot from here on out. in fact, lieberthal has held up much much better in the second half the past couple years.

so imo it comes down to abreau and willis. abreau is the ultra-safe option; willis carries more risk and, again imo, not a lot of upside. i wouldn't expect him to pitch much better than he has to this point, and i wouldn't expect abreu to hit much worse (or much better, he's a clydesdale). maybe it's just me, but i think willis carries some burnout risk that abreu avoids completely. so it depends on what your needs are, and how exactly whatever system you're using values pitching and hitting. nice answer, i know.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

that's exactly what i was thinking, john. i declined the trade, but it gave me pause. i really want to deal abreu for pitching. who should i target?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, man, I'm dopey (see above).

John's pretty OTM, BUT, as far as Dontrelle's mini-flameout this year - I heard the Marlins were trying to change his wind-up in order to make it less violent, more orthodox. I didn't get a chance to catch any of these games, so I don't know how true it was - regardless, the results were horrendous. However, his last two starts (where they supposedly let him do his thing) were pretty damn good. But, yeah, Abreu's too valuable to trade for Dontrelle. (NOTE: I heard this on a Mets telecast, and given the asshats populating the MSG/FSN booth, it could be hogwash.)

Guys probably on Abreu's level (& might actually get wins once in a while) = Vazquez, Clement, Odalis Perez (I said once in a while), Paul Wilson. & you could always try to sneak Zito or Pedro by, maybe. Dunno if you want to sneak Pedro the way he's pitched - YOU MAKE THE CALL.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

paul wilson????

vazquez and clement were the first names that popped into my mind as well. they're both a bit volatile (statistically), but i'd lean toward javy - maybe yankee bias showing. perez, possibly more of a risk, worse offense, but better park, probably (rightfully?) valued less than the other two. so far though, he's curbed his major weakness from last year (HRs). prolly all good options, but i'd rank perez last among them.
depending on your pitching and the amount of depth in your league, i'd think about weaver and maybe even doug davis as well (not for abreau of course), but they both pitch for utterly anemic offenses if that matters. i wouldn't be surprised if weaver finishes with a 3.75 ERA.

pedro is an intriguing option.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought it an urban legend.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, I might've been overestimating P-Dub's goodness this year & (cough) year's past - his K/9 (around 5.0) & K/BB (around 2.0) ratios the past 3 years are consistent, but what's really changed (for whatever reason) is his SLG against. This year, he's shaved about .60-.70 points off it, so despite the kinda high (?) .256 BA against, he's not getting hurt. But, yeah, I'm not sure what he's done is reflected properly by his sexy 3.18 ERA & equally hott 7 wins, so I'll remove him from consideration.

Interesting point of order, Mr. Chairman - Jose Acevedo has a comparable WHIP (1.18) and BA against (.250), and a K/9 rate better than Wilson's by nearly 3 (7.71 K/9), yet has given up 4 more HRs (12 to 8), and has an ERA of nearly 1 run more than Wilson does (a respectable 4.26). His record? 3-4. No love.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

DIPS ERAs from espn.com

clement 3.29
perez 3.37
weaver 3.65
davis 3.80
willis 4.42
vazquez 4.52
wilson 4.54

i realized vazquez's HRs were a problem, but i figured he'd sort that out. i had no idea how much his k-rate has fallen. he looks a little sketchier now.

note that ESPN apparently uses a relatively rudimentary form of DIPS, without park adjustments among other things.

John (jdahlem), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

uh, I think you can go ahead and give up on the idea of a Pedro for Abreu swap. Not that anyone would have been foolish enough to accept it in the first place.

Holy mackeral, Tamil Tigers start 4 pitchers yesterday and give up a total of 2 runs between them and yet come away with no wins.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 11:23 (twenty-one years ago)

c/d: my trade with the metros

s. finley
l. ayala

for

p. nevin
t. hoffman

he wanted holds and hr's.
i wanted to capitalize on finley's hot streak and secure a reliable closer to replace the 4 i started the season with.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

dyson, that's a pretty even trade from what i can tell.

so milwaukee's ben sheets was perfect through 7 2/3rds last night in a classic pitcher's duel in anaheim... before giving up a single to Vlad... milwaukee wins in the 17th: 1-0.

sheets' line: 9 innings of near-perfect 1 hit/0 walks ball, no decision.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Ryan Madsen, spot-starter for the Phillies who had only given up 1 HR/4 ER in 33.1 relief innings up until yesterday... gives up 3HR/6ER in .2 innings as a starter before getting pulled. ouch.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

he wanted holds and hr's.
i wanted to capitalize on finley's hot streak and secure a reliable closer to replace the 4 i started the season with.

Plus, I've had Urbina on the bench all season, so there's not too much drop-off from Hoffman (although, I'm sure Hoffman will get more opportunities as the season progresses).

I met Steve Finley once and I feel comfortable that he will fit in well in the Metrosexuals clubhouse.

boldbury (boldbury), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

lawrence, without looking at your lineup, I'm guessing you have Glavine? I've got him in my other league. So F'N frustrating...

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No Glavine but here were the scores of my starting studs resulting in no decision:

Radke (2-1)
Pineiro (1-0)
B Sheets (1-0)
D Wells (1-0)

This will give me at least a weeks worth of prime complaining.

re: madson

can you say that the phillies have fallen prey to the rodrigo lopez fallacy?

higgins, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i would like to think so... i kinda feel bad for the guy... he was one of the best relievers in the NL, had plenty of time to prepare for the start and just got rocked.

with lopez, he looks great for the first 3-4 innings before imploding in the 4th-5th.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:24 (twenty-one years ago)

but Lopez came up as a starter, didn't he?

Anyway, Phillies are just playing stop-gap until Padilla gets back, right? It happens. Crazy thing is, they were still in the game after that. It was Telemaco (sp?) that really let them down.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

lopez has been BRILLIANT in long relief this year. the phillies have wolf on the dl too i think, madsen was just a spot-starter.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

your first sentence: doesn't contradict what I was saying; I was just saying the comparison to Madsen doesn't hold.

your second sentence: affirming my point, I think?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:49 (twenty-one years ago)

lopez did come up as a starter. actually, he lasted 6 his last start. the o's pitching problems go much deeper than go go lopez, though. it kind of starts w/ a fat, aruban aristocrat that fancies himself staff ace.

higgins, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:52 (twenty-one years ago)

so, my office internet connection was down a few days ago, preventing me from activating mark prior for his first start of the season. no big deal, i thought later - he pitched well, which i was stoked about, but got a no decision, so i didn't have to beat myself up for not getting the win points. i thought, "i'll just make sure he's in the lineup for the next start.. ."

Yeah, he looked not so great today.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

My fantasy team is going nowhere:

Cliff Lee for the third time in a month goes seven gives up a couple of runs and gets no decision thanks to the Cleveland bullpen.

Tom Glavine could have ten wins if the Mets could hit or their bullpen was worth a crap.

Zito gets a win, but gives up five runs and a couple of dingers.

I start Chipper thinking maybe being a DH in Detroit might get him started, but no! He goes 0 for 5 while Danny Bautista sits on the bench going 3 for 5.

The A's seem to play Euribel Durazo every third day to bring in the huge bats known as Scott Hatteburg and Eric Karros, meanwhile Durazo is the leading the teams best power hitter with Chavez on the DL and is hitting close to .300 and was hot until they seemed to start platooning him. Sabermetric tomfootery I tells ya!

On the good side, Jimmy Rollins is playing quite well of late and is up to .273, which if you know how shitty he hit for the first seven weeks of the season is impressive.

I don't feel right having to think that Paul Lo Duca is a savior of my offense. I think I am being set up for a fall.

Biggio has been a suprise, but he has always been solid.

I now have rookies playing 2b and 3b, this should be interesting.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I think one reason the Yanks went for Kevin Brown, injury problems or not, is that he has pitched well in the playoffs. So getting hurt in June is bad, but as long as he is ready for October, they might get what they wanted out of him.

Also - having the NL West play the AL East this year is really fubaring my pitching matchups. I WANT to start Eaton tonight, but not against the Yankees. And Odalis wanting to push his start back so he'd face the Sox is admirable, but it don't help the club's chances in see first place anytime soon. Think of the TEAM, OP.

this ties in to the derail in the "what ballplayers have you met" thread and has next to nothing to do w/ fantasy baseball but i'll post it here anyway:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/writers/jacob_luft/06/11/homerun.help/index.html

a nice article on park effects. i didn't realize the fences at comiskey had been moved in (which disgusts me), but that explains a lot about the recent philly-chisox series. HR factor jumped from 97 to 130, which is extraordinarily high. how long before petco gives in, i wonder? or does that building being a part of the playing field mean the dimensions are fixed?

John (jdahlem), Saturday, 12 June 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yikes!! No lead is safe in the wacky world of fantasy baseball. Here I thought I was seemingly. But a -9 performance by the Kings coupled with a +10 showing by the Metrosexuals, and suddenly my nice and cozy 30 point lead has emaciated to a more worrisome 10 points overnight.

1 week 'til Sammy gets back though, then watch out ILB. Oh, and Cesar Izturis is contributing nicely to the cause today, with this sweet sweet line: 4-4 with a 2B, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and a SB.

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 12 June 2004 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

gah, "seemingly in command" that should read. dunno where that went.

yes, the fences moved in just last week! and the weather had nothing to do with it!

Kerry (dymaxia), Saturday, 12 June 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

most or all of the ones i saw were barely going out. that amount of HRs obviously isn't normal, but since they weren't playing in philly (huge hitter's park), i'd figured they were "legit" because, to my outdated thinking, comiskey (oops - us cellular) was still a neutral park. now i know it's not, hence my comment.

(just face it kerry, your team is ugly in every way)

Preston Wilson's finally off the DL but now I'm at an impasse on whom to drop. Can someone take a peek at Pronounced Miller and give me a recommendation. Adam Everrett? Fartolo?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd probably drop the little cat, personally (catalanotto). Since he's only eligible for the outfield, he's not as valuable as years past (where I think he was 1st and 3rd eligible). And he doesn't seem to be getting into Tosca's lineup on a consistent basis. So, outfielders like him are kind of dime-a-dozen, plus that's where Wilson plays.

Also if you drop Colon, I'd probably pick him up. Seriously, I still think he'll get his shit together. I'd just keep him benched until he does...

Broheems (diamond), Saturday, 19 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

due to cat's history of back problems he doesn't get consistent play time on acount of the skydome's turf.

but if i were you i'd hang onto everret as wilson's gotta cool off sooner or later - & instead drop lowell stat¡

dyson (dyson), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you want to trade for Colon, the ILX-voted Mingiest major league player?

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Sunday, 20 June 2004 04:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a bit of a glut at 2b and SS with Reyes returning and Jimenez coming back from the dead. Anybody wants to offer an outfielder comparable for either of those or Renteria (altho i obviously cling to my redbirds) or Bellhorn, I might bite. Also might give up waiver sensation Casey Blake or the currently crappy Jason Giambi.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

2. Is there any way to get rid of the max roster moves?? It sucks! ; )

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

One questions:

1) Will Reyes lose his SS eligibility soon/this season?

M. Batista, R. Drese, T. Armas are all available. add any others that would probably be available that I should consider...(also, I'm definitely not giving up Schmidt for anything right now...)

Gear! (Gear!), Friday, 25 June 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

What league is this? I have R. Drese.

boldbury (boldbury), Friday, 25 June 2004 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

It sho ain't our league - Robertson, Drese, Batista, Lee, and Redman are taken in ILFBB.

Even after you trade one of those guys away, I fail to see how you're going to be in need of starting pitching.

Anyway, in order of getability (stat skim version): Robertson, Drese, Batista, Lackey, Davis, Lee, Redman, Byrd, Armas. I don't trust pitchers coming off shoulder surgeries. And I don't trust guys that have .290 BAAs or awful WHIPs. I also don't trust Doug Davis.

Also - DON'T TRADE FOR ALEX SANCHEZ. That is all.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

re: trades

no interest in my wares young pups and shorties? i'll gladly consider counters, or straight up refusals, but a response would be super!

j.q. higgins, Friday, 25 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hey popshots you dick
why you salting sanchez' game?
(i proposed a trade!)

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 25 June 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I also don't trust Doug Davis.

That's because I've got him, hata.

Hey people, do you remember those days when I couldn't give away Vidro???

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sorry, pups management has been slow. I think I saw that Giambi is getting more tests for some virus that might explain his suckiness or something, so I might need to hang onto Casey at the bat Blake.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, shit, I thought this was a non-league trade!

Alex Sanchez is a grand philanthropist, and is a terror on the bases.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 25 June 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Johan Santana's last 4 starts:

30 Innings Pitched
2 Walks (!!!!)
39 Ks (!!!!!)
17 Hits
6 Runs (6 earned, all off 4 homeruns)
ERA = 1.80
WHIP = .633
K/9 = 11.7
K/BB = 19.5 (!!!!!!)

pretty amazing stuff to try to counter a very shaky start of the season

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

earlnash:
Barry Zito has turned into a very average starting pitcher.

i'd take an average pitcher over zito at this point.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 26 June 2004 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

He definitely started to lose his shine last year. But he's still only 26. (Then again, I still have hope for Ankiel.)

bnw (bnw), Saturday, 26 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm doing ok considering three of my big picks have not done squat or have been hurt for long periods.

Barry Zito -- hurts more than he helps. (I take Mulder instead of Zito and I would be slaying the rest of the league in wins and perhaps ERA, I'm pretty close as is.)

Chipper Jones -- missed a month and hasn't produced squat since his return. If I am to have any chance, I need him to turn it around and start hitting.

Eric Chavez -- I've got nothing out of 3b since he got hurt a few weeks ago. (I could have had Rolen instead of Chavez, I think about this pick as they were about even going into the draft and I bet the wrong horse.)

I've done all I can do with trying to game the free agents and have had some luck that is keeping me from completely going into the tank.

Until I got Aaron Miles, the Rockies rookie, a few weeks ago, I hadn't gotten anything out of 2b all season. He has played well.

K-Rod, Hawkins and Ray King have all pitched well this year, I only wish that they got more save opportunies earlier in the season.

Tom Glavine is pitching great, but the Mets have cost him at least five wins because of their bullpen or lack of support. Cliff Lee should have a few more wins for the Indians for similar reasons and he was a good pick out of the free agent pool a month and a half ago.

Lo Duca and Biggio have both been solid, but their hitting is starting to slow down. Jimmy Rollins started out dead slow, but has played quite well the past month or so and is about back to his average, which is solid.

Carl Pavano has been a very good pick and quite consistent. He is probably pitching the best in that staff, which is a bit of a suprise.

Vlad is bad bad man, just please stay healthy!

earlnash, Saturday, 26 June 2004 22:32 (twenty-one years ago)

AARRGH FATOLO YOU TEASE.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 04:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Beltre looked like Baby Vlad yesterday.

Also - Jason Bay is a god.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 June 2004 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My team should be doing much better than it is. I am perplexed and chagrined. Stupid pitching and catching woes.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

i want a reliable 2nd baseman. platooning the 3 assholes i have now is getting really annoying.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Which 3 assholes are you saddled with?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

eric young - who is doing well but only gets playing time vs lefties.
grudzielanek - great hitter, but coming off an injury and platooning with walker.
& marc scutaro - gets regular playing time but is not very consistent at the plate.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

jolbert cabrera seems like a decent call.

otherwise, i'll give you mackowiak for someone...but i don't know of he really solves any of your problems.

j.q. higgins, Monday, 28 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-one years ago)

the studs have durham rotting on the bench. i think he'd be the best bet to solve my problem. & i think i'd rather have mackowiak then either my current situation or cabrera.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You know I do have 3 2b-eligible guys.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ya...
i know.

*cough*

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh that's right, I don't want anyone on your team.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

(Big Hurt notwithstanding.)

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

what's your team name there, buddy¿

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

You got Damian Miller on your squad?!

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Monday, 28 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

my bad.
it was your "boyfriend" i was thinking of¡

dyson (dyson), Monday, 28 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-one years ago)

That looney sportswriter from Denver that is on "Around the Horn" said that Shawn Estes is the pitcher that the Cardinals need to pick up for down the stretch.

I thought I would share that one for contemplation.

earlnash, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:48 (twenty-one years ago)

He has twice as many wins as Freddy Garcia, thus is twice as valuable to a contender. He's gonna command A LOT on the trade market!!!
