Rolling NYY - BOS 2004 ALCS thread

larry mahnken's commentary at the hardball times today helped convince me the picture isn't quite as bleak as i'd previously thought:

"Should the Yankees finish the series today, they'll be able to start Mussina in Game One. That rotation hardly negates Boston's starting two, but in a potential Game Seven the Yankees might have Mussina against Bronson Arroyo, though of course all the pitchers but Pedro and Brown will be available in the bullpen."

though i'd guess it could easily be mussina against schilling on 3 days rest. if el duque comes back strong, i'm confident the yankees can squeak it out with no small degree of luck. otherwise, it's going to take stellar performances from a whole batch of pitchers who've delivered far less than most of the year. the sox and twins offenses are so disparate as to be almost beyond compare: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/stats/byteam?cat=Overall&cut_type=0&conference=AL&year=season_2004&sort=702

so who's gonna win? in the end it boils down to this -

what the sox have on their side:
offense
defense
pitching

what the yanks have on their side:
history

choose wisely.

(yankees in 7, just cuz)

Again, I'm agreeing with John here.

(The Twins kept the Yankees on the ropes almost every game except Game 3, which had last-inning could-they-do-it intensity anyways -- and the Twins do not have Manny/Ortiz/Damon.)

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Sunday, 10 October 2004 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

There will be no Boston choke. The Yankees, OTOH, can collectively choke on my dick.
Boston in 6. I would have said 5 but the Yanks have the home field advantage.

SURPRISE: Murray Chass of the New York Times sez the Red Sox will lose the ALCS because losing is what they do. I'll be fucked if I'm gonna actually dredge up a link to that hooey - John or some other pro-Yanker can do that dirty work (oh yeah).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 October 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

we all know how long it's been since the BoSox won a world series, but how long has it been since they beat the Yanks in a playoff series?

Fuck a flat knuckleball in extra innings a 3 year old could take deep.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Game 1 -- Schilling/Mussina
Game 2 -- Martinez/Lieber
Game 3 -- Arroyo/Brown
Game 4 -- Wakefield/Vazquez
Game 5 -- Schilling/Mussina

Looking at that lineup, I just can't feel that the Red Sox have a great advantage. They have some, but I wouldn't be suprised that Mussina or Lieber either one comes out and at least holds a game tight enough that it comes down to the bullpens late. Wakefield could either be unhittable or be gone early, not that Vazquez is a Maddux of consistency or anything.

The Yanks defense is much better than last year. Olerud may have lost most of his bat, but he is still good with the glove and a definite upgrade on Giambi in the field. I don't think the Sox defense is much better, if it is at all.

Both of these teams can hit like wild.

I wouldn't be suprised that the big game comes down to who screws up between Mike Timlin, Alan Embree, Flash Gordon or Paul Quantrill.

At least the Sox are not going to have to call upon Bob Stanley or Calvin Schraldi to get the last few outs. Keith Foulke is the first real closer they have had when Boston actually had a shot at winning it all.

This is Boston's best chance that I can remember. They went out and got a gold glove ringer to play first and a real closer, so at least they are trying to learn from their mistakes.

All I know is if I was a Sox fan I don't want to see Miguel Cairo coming to the bat in extra innings against Derek Lowe. They should shutter at the thought of that happening.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sox in 5 if curse doesn't come into play (they really just a far better team--on paper and IRL.) Yankees in 7 in the most tragic way possible if curse holds up.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Man, all the people picking the Red Sox here virtually ensures the Yanks will win. Fade the public.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the Red Sox were 11-8 against the Yankees this season. However, if you look at the second half of the season the Yanks come out ahead, since the Red Sox started out very strong, going 6-1 at the beginning of the season. This means that after the first seven games, and once the team found its footing, the Yanks went 10-2.

I think it will be the Yanks in 7. No one who watched that midseason game where Jeter dived headfirst into the stands running for a pop foul can question the determination of this team to beat the BoSox.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

once the team found its footing, the Yanks went 10-2.
No, check your math, they went 7-5.
And Jeter can be as determined as he wants, but the Sox are a better team. Both teams "want" to win equally badly.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's times like these that I wish I were feelthy rich and could afford to spend a week out East paying insane broker prices for tickets and watching BoSox and Yankees fans beat each other to a pulp while I sit in the middle with my hands behind my head and feet up, smoking a celebratory stogie.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, and I guess that July extra inning game in Boston where Varitek got in A-Rod's face and they won in the 9th on a Mueller HR off of Mariano, that don't mean dookie. Sheesh to the nth powah.

JETER JETER JETER!

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No, check your math, they went 7-5

Sorry, I'm losing it. You're right.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

No offense o-nate, but no one would've noticed this play if it wasn't Jeter

Much to-do is made of Torii Hunter's fearlessness in jumping into the outfield wall after a home run. In my view, diving headfirst into the seats shows more fearlessness than running into the outfield wall.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Um can I ask why Mr. Determined & Fearless and the rest of Overpaidy Bunch have managed to um like not win the World Series the last three years against other teams who like the Red Sox also lack Mr. Determined & Fearless (but have those little intangibles like scrappy hitting and starting pitching. . .)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

jeter is underrated

John (jdahlem), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, obviously determination and fearlessness aren't everything. Also, I think that determination is particularly strong against the Sox, moreso than for other teams perhaps. I think what happened last year is that the Yankees spent themselves against the Sox and didn't have enough juice left for the Series.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

I think this is the toughest and MOST talented Sox team I've ever seen. I'd be shocked if the Yankees beat them cuz of pure grit or something. And the Red Sox didn't lose last year because of mental toughness anyway. They lost because their manager was an idiot (which I suppose is still possible this year.)

Jeter is an amazing ballplayer, but he's subject to the same laws of baseball that almost everyone else is. I mean for all his big game player talk, the guy was 0-4 against Beckett in that final game.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Jeter is not mentioned enough by sportscasters.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha you are joking, right?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Go ahead and laugh, but even leaving aside Jeter, I count on A-Rod's determination to get that WS Ring to be another not inconsiderable factor.

o. nate (onate), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha and I'm sure that none of the Red Sox hitters (or pitchers want that ring.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

They do but A-Rod is better than them.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Football and basketball commentators say these sorts of things all the time, i.e. "The score is ties at the half, and it's all going to come down to who wants it more". Uh, no, it's going to come down to who plays better. There's not an athlete alive who is playing for a championship in any sport who believes that the players on the other team have more determination, motivation, or want to win more badly than they do.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think he's much better than Ramirez (at hitting anyways.)

Anyway this whole series is going to come down to how the Yankee hitters deal with Schilling. If they can't (and history seems to indicate they can't) I predict that this is going to be a very short series for them. If they can then I would wager these teams are about even and all this talk of "pressure" and "grit" and "toughness" might actually mean something.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 11 October 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't it think it's schilling so much as schilling AND pedro (which is so obvious that it doesn't really need to be said) - they have to hope to split those games, and come out on top in the others. but wakefield always seems to manhandle the yankees as well.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 11 October 2004 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Almost forgot to predict...

I'm pulling hard for the Sox but my GUT is sending me a signal I cannot ignore. Yanqs in 7 again.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 06:50 (twenty-one years ago)

In my view, diving headfirst into the seats and risking a season-ending injury OR paralysis when your team is playoff-certain is fucking stupid. I think Joe Sheehan -- a Yankee fan -- said so on BP 3 months ago.

I actually think Jeter and A-Rod were both somewhere around the 11th to 15th-most valuable AL players this year. Jeets had a good year even if he's monstrously overrated.

Please Bosox, exorcise your demons NOW, then let the Blue Jays Era begin in 2006.

EAT MY FUK YANKEES.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

from my blog:

This seems to be the Sox's year, as their pitching is very strong, the batting order is almost flawless, they actually have a defense and the Yankees actually aren't all that deep a team. Which is to say, the Red Sox blow it (middle relievers and setup men being the culprits) and the Yanks win in seven. I hope to God it doesn't happen, but it will. It always happens. For the Sox to win, it needs to be a boring series. A series where the Yankees never get in it emotionally — Sox in five, something like that — because once it gets to a game six or seven, the Sox won't be able to stop themselves from considering every other time they've been in that position. And then they will beat themselves. So, let's make it Sox in 5 or Yankees in 7.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

All Red Sox players need to be locked in sensory deprivation tanks for the next week, just so they can avoid the inevitable (bullshit) questions re: The Curse That Exists Only To Give Lazy Sports Journalists A Crutch.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 14:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, sports writers should be hounding the Yankees with "bad things happen to teams that beat the Sox"

When Mariano comes out for his press conference someone should ask him if he'll have his "electric" stuff tonight.

I am a fan of Doug Mienkiewicz (sp?) and David Ortiz. I am a non-fan of Derek Jeter and A-Rod. That's good enough, no?

Eric H. (Eric H.), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 17:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been pondering the question of the importance of Game 1. If Boston loses (and particularly if Schilling pitches badly) then cue the doomsday scenarios because of the oft-repeated mantra of Boston's aces > New York's aces.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 18:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I tend to find all the predictative scenarios and match-ups, while definitely fun to indulge in, go to shit the minute the series starts.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite sox/yankee rivalry moment was the guy with the "fuck the yankees" sign and the PATRIOTS CHAMPIONSHIP PARADE a few years ago.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 23:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm watching on mlb intl. and there's no ads!! schilling was just in the dubout, immediately put on his sateen jacket, somebody tries to rib him about something (bellhorn?) and he just turns away to fill up his water bottle. he comes back and says "hey" to the ribber, sits down, immediately finds a little bag behind the bench, a coach comes over and talks to schilling, standing exactly between him and the camera, for awhile, he moves away, bag is gone, schilling hanging out. maybe i'm paranoid. that was a good inning.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 12 October 2004 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

This doesn't have anything to do with the game, but has Kenny Albert (the on-field guy for Fox) always sounded like Beano Cook? He sounds like he's got about five minutes to live.

FOX has Al Leiter in a three-man booth and he's no joy to listen to either. Surely this has something to do with the three-man booth, with is a terrible concept.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 00:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, no matter how Schilling pitched -- short of brilliant -- the Yankees were going to win tonight. Mussina has been masterful.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 00:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw man, I like Al Leiter in the booth, or at least what I heard from him last year. I only saw about one inning of him tonight (so if he's been obnoxious I plead ignorance), but if a former player is going to give me insights on the game, I'd rather hear his than McCarver's.

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 00:58 (twenty-one years ago)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

WHen you start Kenny Lofton as your DH, and you put him in the nine hole, and he smacks a home run, you can bet it's going to be a pretty good night.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tep i'm in Londres! i can't stay up for this bull-kaka. 7's too much. and did you notice how good El Brujo was pitching and not getting any calls?? every curve he threw would have been a strike in Boston's turn at bat. why the f*ck doesn't Ramiro Mendoza get the respect he deserves?

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:16 (twenty-one years ago)

8

nice move, Francona, bring Mendoza in three outs too late and hook him three outs too early

(i buy laskanic about as much as i buy lowe right now)

(nutz to Francona again, for bringing Wakefield in - i thought he was pitching game four? and now that Schilling's out the bench isn't exactly flush with starters. plus Wake's a guy with a pretty consistent history of not being comfortable unless he's secure in what his role is. he hasn't been a relief pitcher for how many years now?? i hate everything.)

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Do you ever kind of want them to just send, like, the bat boy or Seth Myers or someone out to pitch, just so they can save everyone else for a game that doesn't have an 8 run deficit?

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that was weird. If Schilling's ankle was bothering him *that* much (which the FOX commentators are convinced of and won't shut up about it) then they'd be pretty dumb to pitch Wakefield tonight.

Given that Wakefield did pitch, I think that Schilling isn't hurt, he was just TEH SUCK tonight, and will pitch Game 4.

(oh, there goes the perfecto)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:25 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG VARITEK

THIS IS ILLLLLLLLLLL SON

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

This would be a colossal comeback, but the Sox'll have to do it through Gordon and Rivera now (not that I would count them out.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 01:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I already told the girlfriend that if the Red Sox make the World Series, we're naming a kid Varitek. (I said this last year too.)

Goddamn this game is going to give me a heart attack.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Attn Yankee fans: Is it possible to wipe one's brow in relief and look smug at the same time?

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Once Schilling coughed up the 6 runs, it was a sunk cost. The fact that the Sox were able to slap Mussina around a bit (or, at the very least, get a hit off the guy) and force the Yanks to dip into their bullpen AT ALL would've been enough of a recoup on the crap Schilling start for my taste. (And, hey, they actually hit the very hittable Tanyon Sturtze! Bonus!)

The fact that the Sox made it VERY competitive, and Francona didn't go to Foulke A) to start the 8th or B) when Timlin was looking kinda sketchy on those 2 singles is a whole different matter. A version of this line is bound to be in Joe Sheehan's write-up for BP tomorrow, but - if Foulke's the guy you want in the game when you're down three runs, then why isn't he in the game when you're down only one?

That said, the Sox nearly overcame a horrific start from their #1, gave the Yankees something to sweat about, and can still leave NY with a split and 3 games at Fenway.

McCarver's three sheets to the wind - that shit he puts in his hair must make him trip his balls off. He talked about Johnny Damon being in the Yankee lineup, called Bronson Arroyo "Brandon", made up some nonsense about Varitek centering a pitch on Rivera. Leiter's OK (leaps and bounds beyond McCarver right now, which is, y'know, a damning comparison), but I'm wary of him. Also - that "Who's Your Daddy" chant is the lamest thing ever. Also also - why the HELL is Fox even thinking of cutting to the booth during the 9th inning when the tying run is @ the plate? I guess I should be thankful it was Al showing off Mariano's cutter, and not that punchable talking baseball.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Red Sox have no daddy. They are bastards, magnificent bastards.

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Is the format 2-3-2 ? I didn't think that was until the world series. Or maybe I'm thinking of some other sport.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

It's 2-3-2. I think every major sport uses that set up (unless the NBA is still doing that hellish 2-2-1-1-1 thing).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:18 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah -- I think that is what I was thinking of; I think the NBA might go 2-2-1-1-1 UNTIL the finals, when it switches to 2-3-2. For whatever reason.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

2-2-1-1-1 makes more sense for the NBA, since home court is a much bigger advantage than in, say, baseball.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

No home field advantage in baseball you say? Well let me tell you about the mound height and slope at Dodger Stadium. For the next four days.

Tim McCarver (mattbot), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 04:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with the Motherfucker's spin. Our hobbled ace pitches his worst game of the season vs Mussina's perfecto through 6... and still we make em sweat.

This plus the election = heartburn city.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 08:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ugh, Mussina owns the Sox. Always has. And yes, lifelong (depressed) Sox fan here.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I am glad that TAFKATH recognizes that, yes, I am THE Motherfucker.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 11:50 (twenty-one years ago)

What I think is funny about Boston sports is that the Pats have won two Superbowls and have the longest winning streak in the history of the NFL and yet it seems to be a second run sports story.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 12:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I loved when McCarver was slobbering all over how Matsui hit an "unhittable pitch" and Leiter said "maybe he was just lucky".

McCarver is a dunce. Suckin on the Yankees dongs like he does every year.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

from the sports guy:

6:48 -- But seriously, can you imagine telling your boss, "I need to leave work early today if that's OK, I have to go home and make my giant 10-by-5 'MOOSE GOT THE JUICE' sign for tonight's game"?

6:52 -- During the inning, after a cartoon baseball named Scooter explains how a curveball works, the Sports Gal happily says, "I liked Scooter!" I think I'm in hell. Meanwhile, Mussina cruises through the fifth.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Scooter, meet Mr. Sheffield's bat. Mr. Sheffield's bat, meet Scooter. What, leaving so soon?

briania (briania), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Here's hoping Scooter meets Sluggo McBash in tonight's installment concerning the Back Door Slider.

It kills me...the anticipation. That Sports Guy article is so true. Wasn't Schilling the man we needed to push us over the edge this year? And now he may not be pitching again in this series or at all. WTF. If it can happen to the Red Sox it will. Never fucking fails. Maybe there is a curse.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:14 (twenty-one years ago)

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

briania (briania), Wednesday, 13 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Once Rivera got the pop-up to end the 8th ... let's face it, 3 runs down in the 9th against him, the odds were 150-1 or so.

If they were chanting "daddy" at Schilling, what does Pedro get? Let's hope he's ornery and ready to go 7.

Pitch counts through 5 innings: Martinez 91, Lieber 45. The Red Sox are making Jon Lieber look like Greg Maddux circa '95.

Schilling is likely out for the season, and Pedro was brutally outpitched by Leiber. That's basically the worst case scenario for Boston at this point.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 14 October 2004 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i think this was another psychological win for the red sox; pedro's control was a little shakey but he was throwing in the mid-90s all night and had fantastic stuff.

just 2 more of these and they should be able to take a perfectly contentful winter vacation.

my worst worst nightmare = yanks win next game (50/50 odds on this is generous) but lose series anyway (vazquez vs. wakefield looks like an automatic loss (though i've always got hope that javier can turn it around) and if schilling is healthy the next two are once again big advantage sox, wiping the slate clean for a winner take all brown-arroyo redux), becoming the first team in history to lose a series in which a team led 3 games to none. that would suck.

i really hope schilling's done but i'd bet anyone he pitches game 5 (if there is a game 5!!?!!).

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 14 October 2004 03:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Hope springs eternal, VB. Three in a row @ Fenway for the Sox isn't out of the realm of possibility. Last night, there was really nothing to do, except to make sure Lieber didn't have 3 pitch innings (which he might as well have, given how mindbogglingly efficient he was). I'd like someone to investigate the possibility that the Yankees actually traveled back in time, abducted 1993's version of Greg Maddux, and threw him out there last night wearing a lifelike mask.

One saving grace: I eagerly await the moment when either Gordon's or Mariano's arm falls off.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 14 October 2004 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I know, being down 2-1 is better than 3-0 obviously. I have some optimism left....very little, but some.

Yeah, I'm vaguely bitter. I bailed after it was 12-6; BP does lose its flavor after a while. If someone could find the wheels that came off the Red Sox bandwagon after the ALDS (or maybe after Francona decided to stick w/ Timlin against Bern Baby Bern in the 8th inning of Game 1) & return them to Yawkey Way, it'd be appreciated.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was kind of hoping the Red Sox would win this one. Oh well. I guess we don't have much of a series on our hands after all.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Were the Yankees underestimated?

briania (briania), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll say.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:48 (twenty-one years ago)

All I've gotta say to all you Yankees-haters:

Come over to the dark side. Things are much more pleasant over here.

o. nate (onate), Sunday, 17 October 2004 05:50 (twenty-one years ago)

no they're not.

maura (maura), Sunday, 17 October 2004 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Go St. louis.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Sunday, 17 October 2004 13:03 (twenty-one years ago)

ok it's tomorrow, i've let this sink in long enough, so i can say it: this series is not over.

el duque has nothing today. pedro in game 5. schilling in game 6. bam, it's game 7, anything can happen. last night was fun, but i couldn't enjoy it much, because contrary to what 95% of baseball fans seem to believe, it DIDN'T win the series.

i am not comfortable.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah but El Duque against Derek Lowe? Keith Foulke better be ready to go 6+ tonight.

mattbot (mattbot), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

derek lowe's a bad pitcher (but capable of surprises); el duque might be unable to pitch at all (ok so they probably wouldn't be starting him if they thought this was at all likely, but let's be optipessimistic for the sake of argument here). the yankees won last night, but i'll still take the sox in a slugfest at fenway every time. and then i get worried, because i don't like going up against pedro no matter how many times the yankees have beaten him, and i don't want to face schilling no matter how bum is ankle supposedly is, and i definitely don't want another game 7. it's unlikely that the sox will come back, but that's as far as i'll go. yesterday and today's games are as important for the yankees as they are for the sox, he said with only slight overstatement.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2004/10/17/hernandez_rested_ready/
Torre said experience was the main factor in giving Hernandez the nod for Game 4.

"We feel that he's healthy enough to try this," said Torre.

oh gee, no worries then.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hideki Matsui certainly knows when to turn it on. Why on earth was Bernie Williams hitting clean up in front of him?

gygax! (gygax!), Sunday, 17 October 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

dude it makes perfect sense that o. nate is a Yankees fan since he looks a lot like John Olerud! (that's a compliment, Olerud's not a bad looking dude.)

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 17 October 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I would love to look like John Olerud.

Matsui is indeed stupendous. I feel that he doesn't get the plaudits he deserves.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i have more confidence with matsui at the plate than with any other hitter on this team, and did for much of last season as well. you get the feeling he can do whatever needs to be done in any given situation - HR, FB, GB slapped through the hole the other way, whatever - and that's just not something that can be said of, i dunno, virtually every other hitter in baseball these days.

shockingly though, it's probably sheffield who's been most under the radar this series - .692/.733/1.154 for a very decent 1.887 OPS.

gary vs. hideki fite?

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the fuck couldn't Sheffield have showed this side to him when he was on the Braves?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

"We feel that he's healthy enough to try this," said Torre.
It's relatively easy to make this sort of decision when you're up 3-0. With any other score in the series, it would be a more contentious decision.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

true, but i think the game's actually a lot more important for the yankees than most realize for the reasons i've outlined. it's really, really important to beat their bad pitcher so you don't have to face their good ones. normally i'd want torre to go for the kill and pitch mussina, but i don't have a problem with the decision because a healthy duque could be the difference between a won or lost world series. it's a good move, but it carries a huge risk, because an unhealthy duque could be the difference between a won or lost ALCS.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

"Why the fuck couldn't Sheffield have showed this side to him when he was on the Braves?"

He did in 97 when the Marlins won it all.

Sheff, A-Rod and Olerud in place of Giambi, Soriano and Mondesi is the reason they are hitting like mad in the playoffs. All three of those guys are so much more disciplined at the plate it isn't funny. Giambi used to be very patient but turned into a K machine last year. Olerud hit well in the playoffs for the Blue Jays, Mets and Mariners. He was a very good pickup for the Yanks off of the baseball scrap heap.

Matsui was very solid in all of the playoff games last year, but he seems to understand the pitching much better now. He is killing pitchers by going the other way. I would not be suprised to see Matsui bust out next year into a MVP type year next season.

I think a Yank vs Cards or Astros World Series could be an offensive shootout not seen in a long time. All of those teams can hit like mad. The Red Sox can hit like mad, but they seem to have lost their bats somewhere.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

olerud??? are you kidding me? i like the guy a lot but i'd kill for giambi right now, even last year's version.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Sheff hit .062 in '02 and .143 in '03 with the Braves in the postseason. So you can see why I'm a bit peeved to see his gaudy .692 average now.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 17 October 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Is there anyone in the Yankees lineup that's not hitting above .400 for the playoffs?

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 17 October 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

probably everyone other than sheff, matsui, and a-rod.

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 22:26 (twenty-one years ago)

calmed down any davey?

John (jdahlem), Sunday, 17 October 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Red Sox actually don't fuck up a tough play, for once.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Sunday, 17 October 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Can somebody give me a reason why the game was delayed other than "Fox had some NFL highlights and commercials n'shit they had to get through"?

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 17 October 2004 23:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The Cardinals/Astros game started pretty late, too, so maybe the noon football game(s) pushed everything back.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yawnarodhomersyawn.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Could Red Sox fans actually be dumber than Cub fans?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

To answer my own question - there are "only" four Yankees hitting at or above .400 for the ALCS.

BTW, it's nice to know the board spazmeister is concerned about my well being. Howdy, Johnboy. For the record, I have only swallow a few handfuls of aspirin tonight, so I should be OK after the doctors pump my stomach.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 October 2004 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Thank you Ortiz.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Matsui is the Beltran/Pujols of the American League. Fuckin' Yankees.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:31 (twenty-one years ago)

...or not? I couldn't tell from the replay if Williams' foot actually tagged the bag or not. In any case, that play saved the lead, at least temporarily.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

is torre being paid off by fox now too? or did he think since the yanks were up 3-0 it'd be nice to fuck around a bit, and use it as a rest day for his pitchers?

torre very clearly wants to lose this game.

ok, gordon's up. but sturtze???

John (jdahlem), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

This inning is do or die for the Sox since I suspect there'll be two innings of Rivera after this.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

it's not do or die when the yankees only have a one run lead and ramirez, ortiz, nixon, etfucking cetera are due up.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Paranoidally nervous Yanqui fans when their team has the lead with 2 innings left and leads the series 3-0: C or D?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:19 (twenty-one years ago)

pedro and schilling are simply better than what the yankees will bring out in games 5 and 6. not that i'm not paranoidly nervous.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yankee fans are fucking dud no matter what bullshit they are babbling about.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:24 (twenty-one years ago)

(if you can't tell i don't subscribe to the curse, or the idea that the yankees will win because they're the yankees and the sox or the sox, or that the 2004 yankees are better than the 2004 sox, or that the 2004 yankees AREN'T better than the 2004 sox but because of their attitude and professional approach they're sure to win, or that a 3-0 deficit is insurmountable, especially in this case, when the 2 most talented pitchers in the league are likely to start the next two games for your team, or that a 1 run lead in the 8th inning is a sure win provided mariano rivera is on the mound because he's, of course, invincible and has never blown a save or lost a game and the red sox DON'T hit him very well. none of this means i'm paranoid, see?)

John (jdahlem), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:41 (twenty-one years ago)

...and then Foulke woulda coughed up the lead in the 9th.

Your point?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Monday, 18 October 2004 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

What would Zim do?

"Even then, Joe had to distract him with shiny metal objects while Bernie and Jeter and David Justice held him down and wrapped him in ace bandages. Then we drove out of town and dumped him in the woods. By the time he'd eaten through the bandages and walked back to town the next morning, he had calmed down enough that he could communicate with hand signals and grunts. When we got back to New York, we just chained him to one of the batting cages and tossed raw meat to him until it was time for him to pitch against the Mets."

Bases loaded: Mussina 22 pitches in, only one out and already a coaching visit and bullpen activity.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 18 October 2004 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The home plate ump is clearly insane. I expect something appalling to happen. (As if I didn't already.)

Jeter is overrated.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Why aren't those cocksuckers in the booth questioning the call? It looked an awful lot like he didn't beat the tag.

William Crump (Rock Hardy), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

no it didn't.

god damnit.

John (jdahlem), Monday, 18 October 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

John I realize now that you've been cruelly taunting us Soxers with your cod-paranoia. I almost started to believe it. I hate everything right now. Sure the Sox can pull a rabbit out of the hat. But I don't trust Francona with games 6 & 7, much less this one. I sure don't trust Millar.

Is Damon actually the Italian sausage guy wearing a fake beard? Is this the invasion of the body snatchers? If he doesn't come alive we lose it all right here.

Lack of aggressiveness. Torre might have put Pokey in and put on the double steal. What does Torre do? Pray for the homerun from Manny, who against Flash Gordon is very. Ordinary.

If it were the 4th inning, I'd agree completely John, but playing for an insurance run in the 8th to potentially close out the series isn't a bad move.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 18 October 2004 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Manny or someone had better hit the ball out in the bottom of the inning because I've got a feeling the Sox can't last much longer with the dregs of their bullpen from the 10th onward.

I predict the Yanks put it away this inning. The Red Sox have had their shots.

I flipped over to the NLCS during the break -- it looks like they're playing in a tanning booth.

mattbot (mattbot), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never been so nervous about a guy's pitching when he's been pitching so well. (i.e. the passed balls)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:36 (twenty-one years ago)

*Yawn*. Seriously, Manny, Johnny, Bill...you can wrap this one up anytime you want to.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 01:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Eisbär (llamasfur), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow, great game!

And yes, Mr. Crumple, I got a voicemail stating that all was fine in northcentral MS.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Ortiz has been a monster, but this ends tonight in New York. What's the story with Schilling's ankle?

Did I really see Ortiz try to steal a base tonight? He was safe, but still, what the hell is Francona thinking there?

Shaun (shaun), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

MINDFUCKERY

alfalfa romeo (natepatrin), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

TWO

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Reebok custom-made Schilling a shoe that will provide him all the ankle support in the right places and allow the shoe to flex in a way that his old shoe wouldn't. Schilling's bullpen session yesterday went very well according to scouts.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 03:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

As Al Leiter said at the 3-inning 2-hour mark on Saturday,"Welcome to American League baseball." Or the Ring Cycle (with worse music).

I feel certain we're gonna see a position player get a save before this is over. Or an arm fall off.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Christ this is killing me again. I haven't slept in a week. If Papi doesn't get the MVP this year.

Velveteen Bingo (Chris V), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 13:55 (twenty-one years ago)

can you imagine if that game had started at 8:10 instead of 5:10?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i started watching at 10pm GMT, couldn't stay up.

You've Got to Pick Up Every Stitch (tracerhand), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Final tally on the three Boston games:
35 pitchers (not different pitchers, obv)
1299 pitches (!!!)

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 19 October 2004 15:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Although only Lieber and Schilling didn't pitch during those games, so it was literally about 20 different pitchers.
