Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 21 March 2005 05:13 (twenty years ago)

I had Chipper and K Rod on my team last year. The players I really wanted but never got a chance to pick were Vlad the Impaler, Hideki Matsui, Adam Dunn and Miguel Tejada. I also waited too long on Greg Madduz, Jack Wilson, Yadier Molina, Alexis Rios and Preston Wilson, all I had on my shopping list for the later rounds but got picked before I had the chance.

Oliver Perez and K Rod were both players I really wanted to get going into the draft, so at least I got a couple that I really wanted. I also got both Kiki Calero and Danny Haren that are perhaps stretches, but I want to see that Cardinals trade work out. Both of those guys were pretty impressive in the playoffs last year and I thought they would be worth taking a chance upon, since they are going fit as a major part of the A's plans this season.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 21 March 2005 05:29 (twenty years ago)

I just realized I drafted a Yankee imperialist!

My team, which I feel pretty good about, considering the size of the league:

C: Brandon Inge
1B: Mark Teixera
2B: Brian Roberts
SS: Khalil Greene
3B: David Wright
OF: Brad Wilkerson
OF: Vernon Wells
OF: Kevin Mench
UTIL: Calvin Pickering/Robb Quinlan

SP: Johan Santana
SP: Rich Harden
RP: BJ Ryan
RP: Mike Gonzalez
P: Javier Vazquez
P: Brian Lawrence
P: Andy Pettite

BENCH:
Larry Bigbie
Vincente Padilla
Orlando Hernandez
Lance Carter

My bench sucks, but provided Pickering gets plenty of playing time, I should be okay.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 21 March 2005 13:44 (twenty years ago)

I still want to wang you in the doodle, Yanc3, for taking Khalil RIGHT BEFORE I WAS GONNA!

Anyway, IIRC:

SS: Jose Valentin
3B: Troy Glaus
OF: Carlos Beltran
OF: Mike Cameron
OF: someone I drafted before Cameron...
UTIL: Dallas McPherson
BENCH: JD Closser / 2 other sexxxy folk...

SP: Matt Clement
SP: Kelvim Escobar
RP: Octavio Dotel
RP: Miguel Batista
P: JC Romero
P: Dontrelle Willis
P: someone else...
BENCH: more sexxiness...

Not bad considering that after the first round yahoo turned on me and I couldn't really see what I was doing for half the draft (resulting in yahoo picking Pedro & Huff for me)!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

So I've never done fantasy baseball before, and I think I've got the hang of it, but Yahoo! isn't always particularly helpful about certain things. I understand how the bench works with position players: they don't accrue stats unless I put them in the lineup. But how does it work with pitchers? You don't have to designate a starter each day, do you? And do I have to single out one guy as my regular closer? (Is it to my disadvantage to have two closers, then?) Or do all of my pitchers just accrue stats all the time, whenever they pitch?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

erm, that's felix rodriguez, mr. r.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

I was gonna say that it was the drugs talking, but!

FRANCISCO: Anaheim hot shitzu flamethrower, AKA K-Rod, now Anaheim's closer

FELIX: Former Giant bullpen whipping boy, last year's Phillie bullpen whipping boy, now poised to be the Yankee bullpen whipping boy

jaymc: whomever's in your starting slots (that is, whomever's not on your bench) gets you stats for your team. So, if you have a starter on your bench when it's his turn to start, his stats will not count for you. You might have to rotate starters every day, depending on when they start in relation to each other. Yahoo! usually puts a little carat (sic?) (yes I am!) next to a starter's opposing team whenever it's their turn to throw, so you know if they're pitching that day. You can also check out when a starter's forecasted to start (up to 7 days in advance) when you check out your starting lineup for the following day.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 21 March 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

...Or do all of my pitchers just accrue stats all the time, whenever they pitch?
Basically. Just like with hitting, as long as they're not on the bench they will contribute. The only thing you need is at least 2 starters and 2 relievers. Beyond that you can have as many closers/starters/whatever you like.

bah x-post

I just joined another league with some old friends from college. It's only 12 teams or so? So I have David Ortiz and Vladimir Guerrero and Jeff Kent! But my pitching staff kinda sucks.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 31 March 2005 06:50 (twenty years ago)

12 teams is sorta the norm for fantasy leagues, 20 teams is a kinda insane number of teams (one thing i really like about the ilx league)(partly cuz number of teams + different stats = you have to adjust standard fantasy strategy somewhat). i wouldn't be too worried about yr pitching sucking initially, esp. in a 12 team league. there will always be something on the waiver wire.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 31 March 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

God help me I have just claimed B.K.Kim off the waiver wire.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 1 April 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

Well that didn't take long, Juan Gone is already on the DL for Cleveland. I dumped Jody Garut, who I drafted not knowing that he was broken and also on the DL for Cleveland. My robust Indian lefty C.C. "Rider" Sabathia has already joined the invalid list. I picked up Antonio "not quite as old as Orosco" Alfonseca while Sabathia is on the DL.

Is Bill Hall even going to be a regular for Milwaukee? My SS position is pretty lame. I picked up some Colorado rookie that is going to be their regular SS just in case.

Looks like Bobby Higginson was going to get walking papers for the Tigers, so I went out and dropped him and picked up another bottom level starter with Eric Hinske and moved Chipper back to the OF. The left side of my infield is about as bad as the Astros.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:46 (twenty years ago)

Do we still get only one DL slot this season? I have concerns.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Friday, 1 April 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I propse that, if we're going to be saddled w/ limited roster moves, we shd have a 2nd DL slot, because if more than 1 player goes down w/ an injury at one time (which isn't unheard of), then we're either forced to drop that player & pick someone else up (which jobs teams in the roster-move dept. AND the drop-a-player dept.) or keep the guy on the active roster & short ourselves a usable roster slot (which jobs teams in the roster flexibility dept.).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 13:36 (twenty years ago)

We already have 2 DL spots (I know this because I have now filled them)!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Well shut my mouth and call me a cab!

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Shirley.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I've got four starters going today: Livan Hernandez, Oliver Perez, Jake Westbrook and Brad Ratke. I could get off to a flying start or hole in an afternoon.

With LA's Jason Werth also on the DL, I picked up another rookie starter with the Indians SS Jhonny "No it's spelled Wright" Peralta.

Last year my fantasy team was all about A's and Angels, this year seems to be tied to the A's and Indians with two pairs from the Twins and Angels. I find it interesting, as I am really much more of an NL baseball fan, growing up following the Cubs, Reds and Braves.

da meathook? dmitri young?

don't be sleeping on brandon inge, dogg.

bonderman's looking okay, no?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

so far i've had three players play, and all have hit home runs (dunn, matsui, inge). it's gonna be a good year!

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sleeping on Inge, jq (though I still think that last year he was replaced w/ a Pod Person, & I'm waiting for folks to realize this), but hitting 2 HRs is better than hitting 1 HR. Hence, MEAT! HOOK!

Bonderman is looking VERY good, albeit against a lackluster KC lineup. Still, 7 Ks and 1 ER in 6 IP (& only 85 pitches!) = pretty damn good.

Oh, Pedro Pedro Pedro.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 17:59 (twenty years ago)

oh... pedro :(

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

It won't count in the stats, but that catch Matsui made last night was quite nice. He is a good all around player.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Oh Carlos!

Hey, 1 out of 2 big-name free agents performing as advertised ain't so bad. & actually, Pedro's performance isn't out of character, either - the last few years, it's a cause to celebrate if he gets out of the 1st inning w/out giving up a run or 5, & then start pitching like he should.

[xpost]

ha ha "good all-around player" - tell that to the folks that've (rightfully) ragged 'Zilla on the scenic routes he takes to fly balls (esp. during last year's postseason).

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:08 (twenty years ago)

Ya - he seems to have calmed down now.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

Once again, I apologize to Anglaish for kicking it in the nards during my last post.

But, yeah - Pedro usually = shaky first inning, then the good stuff for the next 4-5 innings / 60-80 pitches. After 3, he's on pace for 21 Ks & 180 pitches.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

well, recall last year that he was bombed by the o's in the season opener. i believe javy lopez took the first pitch he saw in the al out of the yard.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:30 (twenty years ago)

For whatever reason, Pedro + Orioles = shellacking (for the most part) (generalizations rock, except when they suck). Dress the Nationals in orange & grey, & they'd tag Pedro for 11 runs in 3 innings.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

man i wish i had dimitri young!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Young's BP comment is great:

"In spite of his apparent late peak, his lack of athleticism is not likely to age very well, but Young is one of the more lovable guys in the game and we wish him the best, our forecasting system be damned."

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:47 (twenty years ago)

dude, did you see him roundin' the bases after the first dinger? he actually looked, like, in shape!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

Cleveland, for whatever wacky reason, stared an outfield of Casey Blake, Coco Crisp, and JOSE HERNANDEZ. That could be the worst OF in baseball. (PLAY THE KIDS WEDGE!) Coincidentally, they're losing 1-0, because Mark Buehrle is pitching a 2-hitter. Buerhle (103 pitches) will probably get yanked for the closer, tho, whoever that is. (Marte?)

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 4 April 2005 19:53 (twenty years ago)

Marte and Hermanson were the setup men last I looked. The closer is named Takatsu, I think.

I've got Dmitri in my auction league. Do well, Dmitri, and you can come back next year.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Monday, 4 April 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

taka-somebody just got the save for the White Sox. He's a Kit Kaat but I'd rather the Indians win the game.

Takatsu

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 4 April 2005 20:06 (twenty years ago)

Yay!!! My two scrap heap pickings Barmes and Hinkse both homered and drove in some runs.

Boo!!! Three of my starters got shellacked and Westbook pitches a great complete game and loses 1-0.

Kruk says Dmitri Young is so far the leading canidate for the AL MVP. "If he keeps this up he will hit 486 HRs this season, eat that Bonds," so sez the Krukster.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 4 April 2005 23:42 (twenty years ago)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 02:11 (twenty years ago)

It was great to watch Young bang those today, especially after cursing the turf in Montreal after only two games last year.

I was surprised Pudge stretched a double in the second or third -- the guy looked much slimmer than last year.

scrimshaw (scrimshaw1837), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 02:40 (twenty years ago)

TONY WOMACK: RALLY KILLAH! (Part Of An Ongoing Series)

Clement's presumably all over the place in the 2nd, giving up 2 walks & a single to "deep right" (can you tell I'm just refreshing ESPN's GameCast?), & TW comes up w/ 2 outs after Tino pops out to Varitek. So, of course, w/ a guy that's throw 20+ pitches in the inning, and the bases juiced, you, Tony Womack, Rally Killah, hack at the first pitch you see (presumably a waste pitch, given TW's proclivities to be frisky) (& Clement's wildness) and pop up to 2nd base. Nice.

Meanwhile, Pavano's struck out 4 in 2 innings (w/ only 24 pitches). No doubt the Pavlovian assheads @ Yankee Stadium are giving him a standing O when he gets 2 strikes on a hitter (when they're not clapping along to the organ).

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

My hitting and OBP has been pretty good so far, although I would like to see more HR and RBI. Barmes and Hinske have played well off of the scrap heap. I have no speed at all, Chipper Jones has my only stolen base.

My pitching has been freaking bad, outside of getting K's. I've only had two quality starts out of nine and I have had four where the starter got shelled. Oliver Perez has done terrible! Steve Kline has been horrible out of the pen, I think his era is like 75.50 or something close.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 11 April 2005 00:54 (twenty years ago)

My hitters have been having a bad weekend, leading to my precipitous slide in the standings. Suppan got rocked on Saturday, while Halladay made about 90 great pitches and one bad one during his start, costing me 3R and a W. But my relievers have been outstanding so far, so I'm relunctant to think about picking up another starter right now.

FYI, kids, please VETO the pending trade between Juice By Jose! (me) and The DeJesus Lizard (haikunym). From the 'nym:

"I inadvertantly clicked "accept trade" instead of "reject trade". Can we cancel at this point? Or can you guys just vote it down or something? Ask Dave Rap0sa, my message was no, but my idiot finger clicked yes...."

My ERA is very low. I have Brett Myers on my staff. This does not computer, but what the hell. Also, I am right now the THIRD worst fielding team in the league. Watch out, Gold Glovers - Detroit Steel is taking over!

The fuck do you have, JQ? You draft from Thugs R Us? Recent graduates of the Nolan Ryan Come Get Me school?

So, yeah - a starting pitching staff of Brett Myers, Kevin Millwood, D-Train, Matt Clement and some other sucka is leading y'all in ERA. And that's w/ Clement sucking wind & walking the beerline. And that isn't including Millwood's last start, which I missed because Yahoo! yabo'd me in my lineup changes. Or I forgot. I blame Yahoo!, obviously.

And be happy to know that I just jinxed D-Train's chances @ another shutout (6 Ks, 1 H , SIXTY PITCHES through 5 IP) (choo choo yr damn self).

BTW, eff all Beane Flickers: Mark Mulder flames out one more time; water in Oakland turns into potent potable of drinker's choice; everyone has the good sex.

I heard during the Braves / Nats game yesterday that Tim Hudson had 30 no-decisions in his A's career, 18 of which happened because he left w/ a lead & the bullpen blew it. & I think they said the A's lost all 30! (I might be getting everything wrong, tho.) &, of course, because The Gods of The Ball have impeccible timing, Kolb served one up to Brian Schneider soon after that observation.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

re: fantasy fortunes

i've already succumbed to the trap of too clver by half managing/gm-ing.

KHAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNN!!!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:45 (twenty years ago)

I can't believe that Mattbot's pitching staff has ten, count em TEN inning pitched thus far. And is therefore whipping all of our asses in K/9IP. Sure, half his staff is on the DL, but still.

My hitters woke up yesterday and batted about .500 as a team -- look out, league!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:47 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, that was yesterday. He's got a whole 17IP as of today.

Fuck man, Klesko got caught stealing today, my first of the season. That will cost me five points!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 17:53 (twenty years ago)

Charlie Manuel on the stooopid pills: pinch hitting for the pitcher in the 8th inning of a 3-0 game, tying run on deck, w/ Tomas Perez & his vibraslap, not Chase Utley & his Junior Wonderbat. GUH.

On the plus side - thanks, Charlie! D-Train w/ 8 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, & 7 Ks. Yahtzee!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:02 (twenty years ago)

My team is being SABRrific, as I am leading the league in hitting, hits, 2nd in OBP, 3rd or 4th in walks and yet I am in the middle of the pack in runs scored and RBIs.

None of my starters have won a game. Danny Haren has pitched ok in both of his starts and Kiki Calero has done well out of the pen so far. My two wins are Scot Shields picking up wins out of the pen for the Angels.

Big Jim Thome needs to get off the singles schtik and start clubbing some bombs. Hinske needs to keep on the clear all season long.

Justin Morneau has gone on the DL, I think this is his fourth or fifth malady since spring training started. This time he got clubbed in the head with a pitch and is having headaches.

I'm damn glad I had Jhonny whatshisname shortstop from Cleveland on the pine last week, as that guy picked up four errors last week.

R Langerhans singled to right.
W Betemit hit for C Reitsma.
W Betemit sacrificed to pitcher, R Langerhans to second. [????]

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

I don't get it.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm guessing Betemit laid down a bunt on the first base line that got picked up by the 1B w/ the pitcher covering first.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

The pitcher probably picked up the bunt and tagged the batter out unassisted.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

What I was thinking is that Cox's faith in Rietsma's bunting skills is so low that he employs a pinch hitter to do the damn thing, which (if true) is WHAT?!? Though Milo's explanation is probably what happened - yay for home scoring.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:36 (twenty years ago)

It could be that Betemit thought he had a legitimate bunting room with the 1B playing deep (?) but that Ayala came in for the tag.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

ignore me today (or longer).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

the mlb.com play-by-play makes no sense at all

Wilson Betemit out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Luis Ayala to second baseman Jose Vidro. Ryan Langerhans to 2nd

Vidro was covering first? Would they have shifted over and in on the corners that much?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

It's the rotation play - 1st baseman charges the bunt, 2nd baseman moves over to cover 1st. That way, the area between the mound & 1st is well-covered, & they get the bunter out.

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 13 April 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

Earl Nash,

What do you think of Jimmy Rollins for K-Rod?

g!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 15 April 2005 02:49 (twenty years ago)

I've gotta have a closer, I screwed that up bad last year. The Rockies rookie SS Barmes seems to be holding his own at short for now.

Good news...Levan Hernandez picked up a win!
Bad news...he lost his shutout in the ninth with a three run blast!
Good news...Chad Tracy hit that three run homer! Good fantasy baseball news all around.

The dreams of the left side of my infield combining for 60+ HRs is so far looking like folly. Thome and Bellhorn are going to combine for 450+ Ks at this point.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 16 April 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

Last night was a make up for Thursday, when my hitters went 3 for 18. What I think has helped is that my starters have pitched better this week. My team ERA dropped from like 5.80 to 4.7 in a week and I have picked up five wins.

Dear Cincinnati Reds Organization,

I am 38 years old, slightly overweight white male residing in Madison, Wisconsin. I have issues with anger, money, intimacy, and depression; my "career" as a music critic seems to be going the same way as my "careers" as a children's book writer and teacher. I find myself having a hard time getting up and going to my job every day, and I have more signs of early-stage alcoholism than I'd like.

WOULD IT BE TOO FUCKING MUCH TO JUST INSTALL WILY MO PENA PERMANENTLY IN YOUR STARTING LINEUP SO I DON'T BENCH HIM ON MY FANTASY TEAM EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMNED DAY YOU START HIM? BECAUSE EVERY SINGLE GOD DAMNED DAY THAT HAPPENS HE HITS A HOME RUN AND A DOUBLE WITH FOUR RBIS. SERIOUSLY, WITH ADAM DUNN HITTING A BUCK FIFTY AND JUNIOR GRIFFEY COMPLETELY INEFFECTUAL, DON'T YOU THINK YOU COULD THROW ME A GOD DAMNED BONE ON THIS MATTER? SHIT.

Sincerely,

Matt C.

Haikunym (Haikunym), Sunday, 17 April 2005 21:16 (twenty years ago)

Dear Cincinnatti Reds Organization,

If you actually bench Adam Dunn because he's in a minor slump to start the season, I will give Matt C. the address of every Reds player, and arm him with a paintball gun, a shiv whittled from a toothbrush, and a month's supply of Colon Blow. You do not want me to do this.

Also, if you think your team is going to get anywhere w/ Ryan Freel getting 300-400 ABs a season, you should just bring Jim Bowden back as GM so the team goes straight into the shitter instead of sticking to the side of the bowl as it's doing right now.

Love,

Top 12 SS in ILBB (current ranking configuration after 14 games):
1 M. Tejada
2 C. Barmes
3 P. Feliz
4 J. Reyes
5 M. Young
6 D. Jeter
7 J. Valentin
8 O. Vizquel
9 C. Izturis
10 J. Lugo
11 R. Furcal
12 J. Rollins

Jimmy Rollins is currently #12 and I would assume that there is some definite room for fallout (Barmes, Feliz, Valentin, Vizquel), making Rollins a top 10, potentially top 5 SS in the game for the season.

Yh3ncy Braz3lban is neither a top 5, top 10, top 25 closer in our league (he's currently #28 FWIW). But more to the point, he's a temporary fill-in for Gagne who's due to return in the next 4-6 weeks.

I guess what I'm asking for when I say "elite" is a top 10 closer for a top 10 SS.

I don't understand how Yahoo makes these rankings. At 2B, for instance, hwo exactly are the likes of Soriano, Giles, and Boone ranked above Kent and Vidro, based on their performances thus far in the year?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Saturday, 23 April 2005 17:57 (twenty years ago)

Stats have been updated. Barry is getting ridiculous production from Twinkies (cf. Torii steallingg bassess, & Jacque Jones forgetting that he's mediocre).

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

Agreed, but a) I didn't benefit from some of Jones' production because I barely played him during the first week -- then he played his way into my starting lineup, b) I'm getting nothing from Lowell and Durazo, and Helton hasn't really started hitting yet. Everyone else is performing as expected, i.e. no Brian Roberts or Shea Hillenbrands hitting out of their minds and inflating my stats to misleading proportions.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 23 April 2005 19:41 (twenty years ago)

Jimmy Rollins hit for nothing the first six or seven weeks last season. If you check last years ILB Fantasy thread, you will find some posts with me complaining about Rollins start. I also had Durazo and I think he didn't really take off until about the same time Chavez went down for a six weeks.

My team is hitting much better than expected and I haven't gotten much at all out of Jim Thome, which was my first hitter taken. Bellhorn and Thome are killing me on the K's, as they have over half of my total which is near the bottom. I've gotten good production from Eric Hinske, Chad Tracy and Barmes, all of which I picked up out of the free agent scrap heap to fill out my roster. I had Chad Tracy for a month or two last year when Eric Chavez was out, which is why I looked for him.

I figured my pitching could be pretty good and it has been somewhat good, but it has been a bit mixed bag. My top picked starter Oliver Perez has been freaking terrible, but I have gotten some very good starts from Danny Haren and picked up SEVEN wins from my bullpen. Jake Westbrook is getting no run support from the Indians, he is right now the worse in baseball getting like 0.8 runs a game. It is a shame, as Westbrook has had three really good starts and one that wasn't so good. Big C.C. Sabatheia has pitched good in his two starts since coming off the DL. Radke has gotten plowed a couple of times and had a couple of ok starts.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Saturday, 23 April 2005 22:25 (twenty years ago)

um, okay.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 12:59 (twenty years ago)

The Slump Busters are slumping. My team is getting really nicked up, but they won't put anyone on the DL, so I can get someone who is playing. Chipper has a bum foot and hasn't started a game in a week. Tho-ME has a bad back and has taken a few games off and when he does play he goes 0-2 with 2k's and a walk. Mark Bellhorn has the grippe or Hong Kong flu, so he hasn't played in a week, which is probably a good thing considering he strikes out as often as a bad hitting pitcher. Jason LaRue is off to terrible start at the plate, so he seems to be getting platooned. Bernie Williams is still playing like an old man. And everyone on my team decided this was the week to make two errors each, so I have dropped from one of the best to worse fielding teams in a week. Oliver Perez continues to get slagged and I forget to put Radke in the starting rotation and he throws his best game of the year against the Angels on Saturday. Shit is just not working. I have fell from 2nd to 9th in a week. Blah.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:11 (twenty years ago)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

Earl, I checked your hitters' numbers for the past week, and they're raking compared to my guys. I'm hoping that my guys' slump is due to Passover, and that things are back to normal now. Todd Helton hitting .260, WTF? His first month hitting under .300 in over two years!

My pitching has saved my ass over the past eight days.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 2 May 2005 13:38 (twenty years ago)

Hahaha! Yes, I am magnificent! I don't even care if he gets rocked in every appearance he makes between now and the return of AFFELDT - I just love the name. (OK, I DO care.)

So, OK, WTF is up with the folks I traded for either getting benched (FREE JORGE CANTU!) or getting in a rut (FREE HIDEKI MATSUI from the 6th slot!), while Nick Johnson's still not injured yet, D-Train's still pitching well, and blah blah blah?

How the hell am I leading most of the pitching categories?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 May 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

Do I have a lineup of Jews? How else to explain that I was in the top five in nearly every hitting category, followed by a week where EVERYBODY decided to take a break during Passover and not hit worth a damn?

My pitching propped me up during that week while I watched my huge lead whittle away bit by bit. Then the hitters came around a bit, but the starting rotation crapped out.

Now Torii Hunter is taking tips from Nomar's groin, and Jose Vidro is injured but the Nats refuse to put him on the DL.

Fortunately, it's a long season.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 9 May 2005 20:55 (twenty years ago)

indeed, don't tell that to my stupid gm who seems bent on blowing all his roster moves by the all star break.

oh, wait...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 9 May 2005 21:08 (twenty years ago)

My hitting is SABR as get out, leading the league in OBP, yet I am still in the middle of the road in runs scored, dingers and rbi. My pitching is all Kruk'ed out, as I am near the top in wins, ip, k's but near the bottom in ERA and Whip.

My first hitter taken Jim TH0me has not done bupkus. My first pitcher taken Oliver Perez is pitching like absolute horrid crap. I think Perez may be pulling a Jason Schmidt with his sucktitude, so he can get traded out of the baseball purgatory that is Pittsburgh. Jake Westbrook has had a few good starts and gets beat 1-0 or he gets totally shellacked and gives up nine runs in an inning and a half. MEMO TO SELF BENCH WESTBROOK AGAINST THE TIGERS, AS HIS ERA IN TWO STARTS IS LIKE 99 AND A HALF. Danny Haren's wheels came off pretty quick and he put a head banger onto Manny Ramierez tonight, which isn't very nice. I tend to think it was more lack of control than a vendetta.

I'm still feeling ok about my pitching, as I found Santos and Campuano of the Brewers out on the free agent tiles. Both of those guys seem to be doing OK and I am kind of suprised they were still around.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:16 (twenty years ago)

Le (Leee), Thursday, 12 May 2005 01:10 (twenty years ago)

I tried to get in on that Keith Foulke firesale myself, but I am a junk bond trader in the free agent pool, so I am near the bottom of the waiver list. At least going by today, it might not be much of a bargain.

I'm just bummed about not getting Rob Mackowiak off of waivers a few weeks back. That guy is like the old Bobby Valentine baseball cards with the position marked as INF-OF. You have to like a player you can pretty much play anywhere.

Hstencil ebay vultured Ryan Langerhands (or something like that) right from underneath by sweaty paws a few minutes ago. I had saw that guy had been on a tear for a week or so and considering how bad the rhyme the ancient outfielders Jordan and Mondesi have done, playing time should be available.

I did get Jason DuBois in the nick of time after reading Dusty was ending the platoon and giving him the leftfield job. That will probably last a day or two.

Hey fellas, Jake Westbrook with the sexy 6.69 ERA and few K's is now on waivers. You can pony up to the bar and hope he regains his form, I don't think it will happen, but you never know.

seriously, though, what's wrong w/ pepper games?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

You could shoot your eye out?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:30 (twenty years ago)

While trying to figure out how on earth I am still in first, I took a look at the expanded standings and found that my team is a bunch of Free-Swinging fools:

That's right Moneyballers, my team is #2 in OBP yet #20 (dead last) in walks... I guess that's what having a high-enough batting average will get you. Also, my team has suspiciously been offered a sponsorship deal by ESPN's Baseball Tonight... hmmm.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 May 2005 23:05 (twenty years ago)

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Colorado decided to score 18 runs against 'Zona. But Matt Holiday (4-5, 3R, 2RBI) and Luis Gonzalez (3-6, 2R, 1RBI) sat on my bench tonight. Not only that, St. Louis ended up giving Edmonds the night off, and Orlando Cabrera didn't play because of a rainout in Detroit, so as it turned out, I could have played both Holliday and Gonzalez. Of course, I couldn't have predicted the rainout, but I could have started Gonzales in place of the useless Mike Lowell (in the worst slump of his career), or even Jamie Carroll (filling in for Vidro while he's on the DL).

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCK.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 May 2005 03:17 (twenty years ago)

In the meantime, Lowell's putting up his usual 1-3, and my offense is being carried lately by RYAN FUCKING KLESKO whose back is a time bomb.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Saturday, 14 May 2005 03:19 (twenty years ago)

Sorry, I meant Lowell's usual 0-3.

re: Klesko - I told you!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Saturday, 14 May 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Does anyone know why sometimes if you try to start someone (happens most often with SPs), Yahoo doesn't seem to understand it come gameday, even though you've submitted it? I'm not complaining it this time cos the starters I didn't start both got shelled, but what about next time when Nate Robertson and Aaron Heilman turn out to be good??

Le (Leee), Monday, 16 May 2005 04:16 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm... I just make sure I hit submit, and then double check to make sure the rosters are updated.

haha so true
"Views: Abreu is on another level right now. If one week from a single player could ever significantly influence the result of a fantasy league, it's this week from the Phillies right fielder."

without him, I'm nothing! when he cools, my assault on the upper echelons is GAWN

(btw: anyone need a slightly used Yhency Brazoban? he won't come cheap, but he's on the block, as I have other dudes for holds galore)

Haikunym (Haikunym), Friday, 20 May 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

I got my first trade offer yesterday.
I feel so special.

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

jqh -- I guess you were also trying to decide between Cuddyer and Hudson?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Sunday, 22 May 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

RJ for freakin KLESKO???

stence have you lost your mind?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:40 (twenty years ago)

my thoughts exactly!!!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:43 (twenty years ago)

Are there some "cash considerations" we're not aware of here?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 23 May 2005 01:44 (twenty years ago)

maybe a "player to be named later"?

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 23 May 2005 02:01 (twenty years ago)

Believe me, I nixed that shit.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 May 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

I was afraid this might happen.

He made the offer on Monday, but I held off on accepting it because the health of three or four of my guys was in question.

Klesko's sale price was never higher than it was a week ago. It's likely come down since Monday.

Obviously I should stay objective here. If you guys want to vote against it, then so be it, but that's the history of the deal.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 23 May 2005 03:58 (twenty years ago)

if i may echo the yanks fans sitting in front of me at a braves game in 98 (to the 'tomahawk chop' tune): "I DON'T THINK SOOOO/RYAN KLESKOOOO"

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 23 May 2005 05:26 (twenty years ago)

Barry, I assumed that you'd proposed the deal and were trying to fleece someone who's near the cellar, anyway!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 23 May 2005 16:25 (twenty years ago)

mir: not a chance!

how many positions does orlando hudson play? once vlad cuddyer got hot and vlad got hurt, it was game, set match.

this is my version of total baseball!

(eternal consciousness to whoever picks up the reference)

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:44 (twenty years ago)

Team Name Change:

Vic Conte, I Convect =====> Wiffle House

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

jqh -- Hudson only plays 2B. Cuddyer's multi-position status was definitely attractive. It was nearly a coin-flip decision for me, but I went with a) Hudson's excellent defense (not sure about Cuddyer's D), b) the home team advantage (GO JAYS), c) Hudson's a slow starter and is now coming around offensively. Also, I already have Jamey Carroll (Vidro's replacement), who can play a few infield positions.

OK, so the Klesko-Unit trade is now nixed (although I believe that a compelling argument as to its fairness isn't too difficult to argue, but never mind that now). However, as many of you know (having received trade offers from me over the last couple of days), I still have an excess of pitching and am looking to wake up my offense's month-long slumber. SOMEBODY TRADE ME A BAT, DAMMIT.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

No no no no - I'm the one w/ the excess pitching! MIR is lying!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

Boo to Blount for taking Damon Hollins a minute before I was about to pick him up. I have to settle for Kenny "Footloose" Lofton.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:56 (twenty years ago)

Moving up from third place may be tough. Damnable holds category.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Them standings are tight, yo. Eight points separating 3rd from 9th!

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 30 May 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

The Slump Busters slump has continued and it has been hard to watch my team slowly fall within the standings, but there is not much help out on the waiver wire and it seems that everyone needs hitting this year instead of pitching. I do appreciate being able to pickup Steve Finley on the waiver wire, not that he has hit for jack squat so far this year, it still should be an upgrade on Eric Byrnes.

I might be OK if Thome and Bellhorn start hitting some jacks and driving in some runs. Those two guys are a blackhole in the lineup, as they have not hit for power, have not driven in runs, do not hit for average and they strikeout more than a NL West pitcher. I really need homers, runs and rbi's bad, that is the only place I can really pick up some points.

The Kit Kaats are doing what I thought impossible a few weeks back, they are actually catching me in HR's allowed. I was freaking double the next person in the league for a week or two. My starting pitching has been better of late, as I have been benching Haren and Perez a bit more. Santos and Capuanno from the Brewers have done well off of the waiver wire also.

Earl Nash (earlnash), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

Earl, I am happy to offer you / cut bait on Steve Finley, because of the largess of whomever decided to offer up / cut bait on the younger (and nominally more productive?) Jose Cruz. Also, Finley has sucked rocks.

I am whupping ALL OF YOU in pitching. ALL OF YOU. Sort of. But w/ that going great, all I need now is for folks like Matsui and V-Mart to hit the damn ball. Leading in walks w/ a .250 BA = a middle of the road OBP. Couple that w/ a nice number of HRs, and my OPS is above average. Watch out!

Also, if Felipe Lopez could keep up his career-making year, that'd be appreciated. Also to Adam Dunn - eff Joe Morgan; just do yr thing. Also to Troy Glaus - don't get hurt you gimpy bastard. Also to Jody Gerut - whack J-Gone behind the knees so you guarantee yrself more PT. Also to Carlos Beltran - GET HEALTHY AND RUN DAMN IT.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

This past week was the first time that I started entertaining thoughts that I might not be able to win. I still think that my hitters are underperforming (I thought the same even when my team was doing well) but I now think that I've fallen too far behind in too many categories to be able to catch up. When Todd Helton is hitting .260 then I think you have to concede that it's just not your year.

Daver -- you're not whipping me in pitching, BOY. Actually our teams are quite similar, with strong pitching, low average, lots of walks ... except my team is DISCIPLINED (low K's) and can CATCH TEH BALL. Enjoy your team of Rob Deers, jerky.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:34 (twenty years ago)

Shut up, hoser. I got yr discipline right here. Enjoy the view when my team's BA skyrockets to .260 and leaves you IN THE DUST. THREE TRUE OUTCOMES. ONE.

There's a team (gygax's?) relying on the effed-up excellence of Pedro Feliz AND Reggie Sanders AND Tino Martinez, isn't there? What's up w/ that?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

Not me, I mean I've got Pedro Feliz but I almost wish I had Reggie and Tino.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

It is strange how my offense is so strong despite having only 2 guys ranked in the top 100 overall: Tejada and Delgado (barely).

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:58 (twenty years ago)

I have eight in the top 100, though my offense is solely being carried by Roberts, Teixera and Wright.

Jams Murphy (ystrickler), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

my offense is being helped by gamblesome free agent signings and my pilfering nick johnson from david r. vlad's been solid when healthy, but not smokin and pudge has been sort of eh.

my pitching is so garbaggio that i'm still carrying boomer wells and i nearly jumped for joy when my era dropped below 5. my ks are none existent.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:53 (twenty years ago)

I want pitching! ANY kind, starting, middle relief, whatever.

Leeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

Ugh. Don't remind me of that Nick Johnson trade. If I still had him & Burrell & D-Train, and picked up F-Lop from the wire, I'd be KILLING ya. KILLING. Maybe.

Lee, I gave you D-Train! What else do you want?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:46 (twenty years ago)

man i am terrible at this stuff.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

D-Train and Joe Nathan are the ONLY pitching I have. Everyone else sucks eggs!

Leeeee (Leee), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Okay Bosox fans,

So I fortunately got rid of Wakefield (who got pummeled today... and the last start... and the one before that) but what do you know, Bronson Arroyo comes in as long relief, pitching pretty good ball. Now of course I've got him on my bench, but none of the fantasy alerts said anything about Arroyo's demotion out of the rotation into a long relief role. What gives sportsfans?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 2 June 2005 00:30 (twenty years ago)

francona's thinking playoffs already. bad sign.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 2 June 2005 04:00 (twenty years ago)

I don't think it was a demotion (and I really don't think he's thinking playoffs in JUNE, Mr. MLB.com) - Arroyo was shelled and pulled quickly in his last start, so rather than go through the bullpen again, Tito opted to use Arroyo on his throwing day.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 2 June 2005 12:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey, Dave, were you so busy bitching about the very existence of Neifi Perez yesterday that you didn't notice his 4 for 5 with a HR and 3 RBIs, vaulting the $800 Boys over Juicy Jose?
