Don't infect other threads w/ fantasy (I kid).

Loaiza fine for 5, just coughed up a 3-run lead with 2 walks, 1 hbp.

anybody catch the article on bowden in yesterday's wapo?

" He calls people "Dawg" often, as in, "What kind of story you writin', Dawg?" During spring training, Bowden wore loose-fitting nylon sweat suits so often the Nationals players began to call him "Eminem." He has a little of that Grandma-trying-to-slip-on-Spandex in him, a primal desire to defy age. "

quite.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 11 April 2005 12:54 (twenty years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 14 April 2005 20:16 (twenty years ago)

like a commenter to the dcist article said, washingtonians will always call it rfk...i mean compare that to the indignity of the national airport "naming rights." i don't know any washingtonian who calls national anything, but national.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 14 April 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

amen. boys are looking SHARP

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 14 April 2005 23:57 (twenty years ago)

so, i dunno...vinny and the mile high effect overstated? granted it's only 10 games in to the season, but my man missed the cycle by a single last night. a single! at rfk, no less!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 15 April 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

Maybe he's improved as a hitter since the last time he left Coors, but I remember his tenure w/ Tampa Bay being less than impressive. & I'm not sure he was so hot w/ Hotlanta. He's probably good for 20-25 HRs, 130+ Ks, few walks, and lots of DPs. And solid defense. Not too dissimilar from Christian Guzman, really, except that it'll take CG 6 years to hit 20 HRs.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 15 April 2005 13:01 (twenty years ago)

nats & o's in first in their respective divisions.

mark it, dude.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Monday, 18 April 2005 11:51 (twenty years ago)

APRIL IS LOVE.

Any chance the O's could just play all their games against the Yankees right about now so they can whup up on them before George keelhauls the team & brings in players that "know how to win" (i.e. Roger Clemens, Jim Leyritz, Chuck Knoblauch, Hank Bauer, Terry Mullholland)?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 18 April 2005 12:46 (twenty years ago)

Sorry:

1) That post should've gone on the O's thread
2) There should be a moratorium on discussing the Yankees in non-Yank threads

cordero escapes with no earned runs, thanks to E-1 overthrow with the bases loaded, allowing 2 runs to score.

Holy crap - ESPN's GameCast still has the game in the 8th inning! Stop eating the hot dogs and UPDATE!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i've found both espn & mlb to be a little slow this season.

the yahoo gametracker (no frills option) is pretty reliable, i think.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 21 April 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

It was an E6 on the throw--but Nick Johnson's really got to stop the ball and keep the go-ahead run from scoring. Smoltz looked good. Patterson looked even better.

At RFK the pitcher's ERA is re-calculated with each out, so you could watch Smoltz's ERA shrink in real time.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

neat-o!

i'm SO psyched to catch some ball at rfk in a few weeks!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 21 April 2005 21:40 (twenty years ago)

hahaha ... they just had a piece on Nats vs. Orioles fandom in the DC area on ESPN -- they had a clip where they asked Joey Eischen about Peter Angelos, and Eischen said "He didn't want us here but ... he's just going to have to suck on it and like it."

"he's just going to have to suck on it and like it" !!!!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Friday, 22 April 2005 03:01 (twenty years ago)

will shea stock some nationals hats you think?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 22 April 2005 03:46 (twenty years ago)

I like the Nats hats, but I'm kind of surprised they didn't go for a logo that was bolder or less whimsical or... something Toby Keith would be proud to wear. Is the loopy W a mini-tribute to the Expos logo?

mattbot (mattbot), Friday, 22 April 2005 03:56 (twenty years ago)

the only thing is, i'm afraid that NYC ULTRA LIBERALS will mistake it for a Dubya endorsement.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 22 April 2005 04:09 (twenty years ago)

isn't the loopy W a Senators throwback? i like the DC hats better, but i ended up getting a red W one...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 22 April 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

loopy w is indeed, the old senators (manager ted williams era) logo. i have one of the interlocking dc hats, as well, and management is nuts if they don't integrate those as a third game cap. when i was back in dc over spring break, so many random people stopped me on the street asking me about the dc cap...

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 22 April 2005 11:33 (twenty years ago)

my new DC cap arrived earlier this week! it is indeed the shit.

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

do they actually have wool ones now, did you get the cotton variety or the "futureweave"?

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 22 April 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

I got cotton -- the cheap one. Hot, nonetheless.

W i l l (common_person), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that's the one i got. good stuff...a real head-turner!

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Friday, 22 April 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

i guess w/ turnabout being fair play and whatnot, the nats are going buck wild on the mets.

the nats have four steals. while i'll grant that wilkerson has deceptive speed, TWO for vinny and one for nick johnson? yeesh.

the first few weeks of this season have done nothing to dispel the notion that it's going to be an absolute dog fight in the nl east.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

i was expecting today to be the beginning of the end for Our Nats--especially when Livan gave back those 3 runs in the bottom of the first. and then i would have been able to say i was there when it all unraveled with Guzman's throwing error on Thursday against the Braves.

but nevermind. no faith in Chad Cordero, though, or any closer who already has three decisions.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 24 April 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

re: the much ballyhooed (by me, anyways) moveable mound

NATIONALS: Washington will start from scratch with the troublesome pitcher's mound at RFK Stadium, rebuilding it while the team is on the road next week.
The work will be done next Tuesday during Washington's series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, vice president of ballpark operations Andy Dunn said.

Nationals manager Frank Robinson and some of his pitchers have complained about the mound. Grounds crew workers have been called out between innings to work on it.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Wednesday, 11 May 2005 15:17 (twenty years ago)

unbelievable. i think jim bowden might have just done a good bit of business in getting marlon byrd for endy chavez.

a jim bowden v. ed wade duel of wits kind of reminds me of the current royals/d-rays series.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Sunday, 15 May 2005 15:54 (twenty years ago)

OTM on both counts!

David R. (popshots75`), Sunday, 15 May 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

i mean, the question is which marlon byrd is the real marlon byrd? his spring training performance hinted at a possible return to 2003 w/ a little more power, but that's just spring training. endy chavez, for good or ill, is a known quantity.

i just don't see why you say, "that's the guy for me" if you're ed wade and you're having the troubles the phils are having.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 June 2005 11:44 (twenty years ago)

I'd be more psyched about this if A) the unis weren't buttass, B) Christian Guzman wasn't on this team (I'll let Vinny C slide, for now), C) Jim Bowden wasn't the GM, and D) Tomo Ohka flipped off Frank Robinson.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 6 June 2005 11:45 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I remember Jim Barr flipping the ball at Frank when he removed him from a Giants game (ca. 1981?); Frank grabbed him by the collar and pulled him back on the mound. Ohka has been fined.

Since 1-1/2 games separate the entire NL East, I guess it's a SCRUM rather than arace.

HAMMONDS RETIRES!
"The game will survive without me", says outfielder.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nationals outfielder Jeffrey Hammonds retired Friday after 13 major league seasons in which injuries played a part in keeping him from reaching the success predicted when he was the No. 4 overall pick in baseball's amateur draft.

Hammonds, 34, ends his career with a .272 average, with 824 hits, 110 home runs and 423 RBIs in 957 games. He never played more than 128 games in a season.

He was drafted by Baltimore in the first round in 1992 out of Stanford, and played for the Orioles, Rockies, Brewers and Giants before signing with the Nationals in December.

Hammonds was sent to the minors by Washington during spring training, then was called up May 3, and hit .219 (7-for-32) before going on the disabled list May 22 with a pulled right hamstring. He was hurt that day during a game against the Toronto Blue Jays.

He was activated off the DL on Thursday night and optioned to Triple-A New Orleans.

``People ask me, am I disappointed about the injuries that I've sustained during my career, that prevented me from fulfilling my potential?'' Hammonds said. ``My answer is: Are you kidding? I have played with the best ballplayers in the world, at all levels, from high school, to college, to the Olympics, to the major leagues. That is a dream in itself.''

His best season was 2000 with the Rockies, when he made the NL All-Star team and finished with a .335 average, 20 homers, and 106 RBIs. He never had more than 55 RBIs in any other season.

In 1997, he hit a career-high 21 homers and helped the Orioles reach the AL championship series.

``The only thing that I was not able to achieve in this game was playing in the World Series. And this Washington Nationals team has a realistic shot of doing that,'' Hammonds said in a statement released by the team.

``I will miss this game, I will miss the people in this game, but those who I have watched walk away from before me showed me that the game will go on.''

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 10 June 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

Wow, a 12-1 homestand with SEVEN one-run wins? The Nats look more and more like at least an 85-win team, but they can't stay that lucky.

The worst thing about their run is listening to Harold Reynolds talk about what a great pickup Cristian (.192 BA) Guzman was because "he catches the ball."

After Washington's 1-0 victory, Jose Guillen blasted Scioscia, his manager with the Angels last season.

``He was talking to me last year about respect and class and how we have to move on,'' Guillen said. ``I don't care really much about Mike Scioscia.

``I have no respect for him any more, because I'm still hurt from what happened last year. Mike Scioscia to me is like a piece of garbage. I don't care if I get in trouble. He can go to hell.''

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:10 (twenty years ago)

What happened last year = Guillen threw a public hissyfit because Scoscia pulled him out of some game, and that became the straw on the back of the near-broke dromedary thing, right?

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 June 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

yeah, guillen's batshit. as long as he doesn't damage the Nats that's ok but i fear it is a matter of time before he turns on them. then again, he seems to have taken to f-rob like anakin to palpatine.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

LOOK OUT JADED BASEBALL HATE ALERT:

A Nats / ChiSox World Series would be 20 types of "HEEgone" mehhhhhhhhh.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

nats chisox would be amazing!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

xxxpost -- yeah, they suspended Guillen for the remainder of the year + playoffs even though he was one of their top hitters. They wouldn't have beaten Boston even with Guillen in the lineup, but still.

And I've got to side with Guillen here ... what was Scioscia's problem? His guy gets caught cheating, so he decides to rip Frank Robinson a new asshole? Was he trying to "protect his player" (which is bullshit, because getting upset at the opposing manager for getting the umps to check Donnelly's glove is hardly a noble reason to "protect" anybody).

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

Oh, yeah, Scoscia's totally in the wrong in this nonsense. But for Guillen to take the opportunity to mount the high horse w/ his skip after what he did last year takes a certain amount of chutzpah / forgetfulness.

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

i don't think he forgot, i think he never felt he was in the wrong. call it chutzpah or batshit or whatever. as long as he performs and is a positive aspect for the nats, i'm OK with him. but i don't want to see him snap during a losing streak or whatever.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

sciosia's actions are spin plain and simple. by creating the to-do w/ frobby, it really minimizes the fact that donnelly was caught redhanded. or blackhanded, as the case may be.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 16 June 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

Scoscia's getting to be an even bigger whiny bitch than Bobby Cox, if that's possible.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 16 June 2005 19:22 (twenty years ago)

Mike Sciosia looked pretty bad trying to show up Frank Robinson when his player got caught with the goods, whether or not it is an "accepted practice" it is against the rules, just ask George Brett.

Jose Guillen is nuts, he got ran out of Cinci for the same b.s. he got ran out of Anaheim. Give it some time and he will get run out of D.C., probably with Frank Robinson's finger nail marks on his neck.

what's kinda bizarre is going public with these remarks. surely MLB already understands that Ledecky/Soros et. al is not to win the bid. it's not like the animosity's a secret, and surely plenty of MLB owners are chummy/coexistant with big Republicans/donors?

Report from RFK tonight:

Stadium management = hapless! It began to pour in the top of the third. The grounds crew was veery slow getting the tarp out, then were unable to stretch it all the way to third base from RF. After about 45 minutes, they gave us about 15 minutes worth of TWIB on the diamondvision. As play was about to resume at 10pm, they closed the concession stands (not just the beer sales). Team officials supposedly paid Metro to keep the subway running past midnight (the game ended at 12:15) and I can only imagine how well that worked out.

Wil Cordero, starting at first and hitting sixth, struck out 4 times. He's now 1 for 34 this year, dropping his average to .029. FUN FACT: one of his outs this season was a fly ball with a runner on third and less than two outs--so his OBP is actually lower at .0285.

the politics/Nats thing now in the NYT

mookieproof (mookieproof), Thursday, 30 June 2005 04:27 (twenty years ago)

nice job on Yard Work with Soros, but the Davis piece is-- well, Davis is a pretty moderate Republican, from a moderate district (in a county that went for Kerry). he's not known for throwing around that Christian Coalition-style rhetoric, etc etc. but he's something of an up and comer, trying to work his way into the House leadership, which I think explains his comments re: Nats ownership.

also, he divorced and remarried a local politician several years ago, which means Soros would have been slipping it to a Republican pol. that could have been mined for some laughs...

what does that mean?

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 30 June 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

means they've been incredibly lucky in re: run distribution. they've actually allowed more runs than they've scored - obv vv few teams like that finish w/ a winning record, much less a .600 win pct.

John (jdahlem), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:05 (twenty years ago)

Davis is a pretty moderate Republican, from a moderate district (in a county that went for Kerry).

Not to turn this thread into a Davis slamfest, but ... when he went on the record as saying that multinationals aren't real Americans, he forfeited any claim to being "moderate".

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

yeah i knew they had a big run deficit, what i don't know is how pythagoras fits into it. they're using some statistical formula based on work by pythagoras to do calculations or what?

barry, i disagree with that statement for three (more or less semantic) reasons, but i also don't wish to derail this thread, so whatever. moderate or not, fuck davis.

W i l l (common_person), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:35 (twenty years ago)

From Rob Neyer's ESPN page (wherehe has Pythag standings you can read without a subscription, unlike his column):

"(Pythagorean) standings reflect how the division races would look based on Bill James' Pythagorean theorem of baseball, in which expected wins and losses are projected using the following formula: Runs scored [squared] / (Runs scored [squared] + runs allowed [squared])."

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/neyer/index

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I remember reading an article a few years ago that claimed possible correlations between great bullpens and teams that overachieve relative to their Pythagorean record. This makes some sense -- the argument being that a team with a modest -> poor offense and an excellent bullpen will take part in a lot of close games, and is also likely to win a lot of the close ones. This scenario defintely applies to the 2005 Nats.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 30 June 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

i was going to mention something to that effect, especially when looking at that division...certainly no one touches cordero and their bullpen is overall pretty solid.

jonathan quayle higgins (j.q. higgins), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:01 (twenty years ago)

Cordero got touched for 2 hits and a walk today!

He had a 1.34 WHIP last year, his 1.00 this year might regress in a matter of time.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 30 June 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

the 1.34 whip was mostly a result of walks, which he seems to have under control now. only thing that really worries me about him is his FB rate, which suggests the longball is a constant threat, certainly more than you'd like from a closer. rivera he ain't, but as long as he keeps his head straight i think he's got the goods to be a very good closer. he says, having never seen him pitch.

mookieproof (mookieproof), Friday, 1 July 2005 20:51 (twenty years ago)

finally got to see cordero pitch...got ahead of burnitz 0-2 w/ 2 outs when he bloops a single over the infield; 4 pitches later it's a tie game off of a ramirez HR.

you could pretty much see it coming - cordero's FB is not terribly impressive and though he apparently has a changeup, he relies on his slider. he threw two to ramirez, and he didn't bite on either as they sailed wide. ahead 2-1, he looked fastball and cranked it out...cordero hadn't allowed a run in his last 18 IP up to that point.

wheels are coming off. three errors tonight, a fourth that might have been ruled as such. bullpen is torched as starter tony armas goes only two after experiencing "dizziness and dehydration." wil cordero inexplicably still on the team and pinch hitting in key situations. cristian guzman twice fails to get a bunt down, once popping it up into a double play (b-h kim made a nice play letting it drop for the 1-3-6 dp), once striking out. really really awful. no balks, though!

30 Bangin' Tunes That You've Already Got ... IN A DIFFERENT ORDER! (Barry Brune, Tuesday, 19 July 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

BP's State of the Game view is hardly "as negative as possible" -- they pointed out the soaring attendance in April in the face of the steroid "crisis" -- but they do favor facts over Selig of Sunnybrook Farm. Joe Sheehan wrote after the 1st-place Nats drew 37,000 for a sunny Sunday against Seattle, "If a city can't sell out a warm-weather game on a Sunday as a first-place team in its debut season, what hope will there be when the team is 17 games under .500 two years down the road? Shouldn't all the hype about D.C. translate to the Nationals being an above-average draw in their own league?" He also points out that the Rockies and Marlins played in football stadiums, and averaged 55 and 37G in their inaugural seasons compared to Washington's 31 (as of a month ago).

The Prospectus Postseason Odds program -- which plays the remainder of the season amillion times -- currently pegs the average wins needed to win NL Wild Card at 89.9.

Hmmm ... I thought I remembered praise from people other than you, me, and Blount (for you guys, it's a matter of geography, so I guess I'm the only wierd one).

Also: I always liked Smoltz. He might be writing his HOF ticket this year.

My bandwagon comment was roughly 49% taking the piss, 51% serious. FWIW. Or did I mean 51% taking the piss? Also: I have no idea why I'm so pleased with myself for being a Braves fan in the mid-late 80s. Just one of those things, I hope everyone will just drop a coin in my cup and move on without staring too hard.

Well, that was awesome. CG for Patterson, grand slam for Wilkerson. Glad I was able to catch this one on TV for once. Hope the home magic is back for good since I'll be at RFK tomorrow night...

Patterson's game score of 92 last night is second-best in the NL all year. Love a John Patterson.

Daniel Cohen (dayan), Friday, 5 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

And his 4 wins. Poor guy.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 5 August 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

Semi off-topc: AL's John Patterson (Kevin Millwood) was donged out of a win after pitching 8 IP of 2 run ball w/ 8 or 9 Ks, because Bob "Koharski" Wickman coughed up the juice to the Yankers twice in the 9th.

Semi?

MLB hopes to fix Nats' price at $450 million:

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

not to mention:

"In June, local businesses in the Washington, D.C. area were up in arms over a new business tax put in place to fund the construction of the Washington Nationals' new arena. Despite the protests, the city has already collected more than $15 million when it had projected only $14 million in receipts for the entire year. Sales tax receipts attributable to the baseball team are also better than estimated. While the city expected to make only $10.5 million for the year, it’s ahead of that pace with $6.7 million.

The plans for the new stadium also cleared a major hurdle when U.S. District Court Judge Richard Roberts declined to impose an injunction on the city that could have blocked the acquisition of property that is currently part of the stadium's footprint. Three landowners had filed the suit because they felt the city's estimate of the value of the land was low and arbitrarily came in just below the city’s $165-million cap that was established by the D.C. city council. Roberts felt otherwise, and if the current landowners don’t sell, the city will take the land through eminent domain.

Finally, ProFunds Advisors, a local Bethesda investment firm, is very close to a deal with the D.C Sports and Entertainment Commission for the naming rights of RFK Memorial Stadium. Sources indicate that the investment company will pay between $3.5 million and $4 million to get their name on the stadium."

...it didn't even occur to me that whielthe property rights advocate in me dislikes the kelo decision, it should make the process of building a new ballpark in dc a lot easier.
