2004 ILB Fantasy Baseball League Sign-Up Thread

Yahoo! registration begins in 2 weeks and I would love commission another league like the one on ILX last year.

Please let me know if you would be interested in participating by responding on this thread! The league is limited to 20 teams.

On a sidenote: there are two leagues available in Yahoo!, a basic free league or a PLUS league which has numerous bonus features, which costs $125.00 to register a 20 person league ($6.25 entry cost per manager). So if we have 20 people showing interest, this may be a wise option if only for the live stat tracking and algorithim capability.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 2 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Me!!! $6.25 isn't bad - I don't care either way.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

You should post this on ILE, too, because I'm not sure if everyone from last year is reading this board.

Kerry (dymaxia), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha, what makes you say that?

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and the winner of the PLUS league gets a free retro replica jersey of the team of your choice.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I want a Jack Clark Red Sox jersey.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i dunno about the pay league. gygax! are you getting kickbacks?

last year the league gave me something to do at work, a reason to live if you will, and I was rewarded with a nice third place finish.

The Pockets are Go!

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tentatively interested, but as someone who didn't participate last year, I'd like to know what kind of commitment it entails -- how much time do you folks put into this?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I am game, I've never been in a Fantasy Baseball league.

Do you sign up via Yahoo?

earlnash, Monday, 2 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

you can put as much time into it as you want (cinniblount to thread!)

feel free to think about it, we've got quite a few months.

yes earlnash, it is through yahoo and very user-friendly.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a breeze. I've never done fantasy baseball before (as evidenced by drafting four Cleveland Indians) and it went very smooth.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Monday, 2 February 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe i'll give a try this year.

dyson (dyson), Monday, 2 February 2004 20:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The vintage Bill Mueller Giants is MINE.

Leee Majors (Leee), Monday, 2 February 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm in baby.

vintage 1975 luis tiant shall be mine.

otto midnight, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Yo, Au Jus - I have a non-ILX friend (shock!) that could perhaps be interested in some beisbol interweb mentalism. Could I, should I extend an invite?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I would like to play, maybe, if it's the free league. $6.25 is a little salty for me.

Begs2Differ, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I am down again.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

David R.: only if he/she posts here at least once!

B2Differ: i'm thinking about 2 leagues, a pay and free league.

Broheems: nice.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 3 February 2004 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

G: Then me in for free league.

Begs2Differ, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in.

earlnash, Tuesday, 3 February 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

someone e-mail felicity

cinniblount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:10 (twenty-two years ago)

and yanc3y

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

wtf putting this on ILB is sneaky. Year one vets should get first dibs. I want in! I plan to prepare my most lopsided cardinals draft ever.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 5 February 2004 08:33 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be in on the pay league. i'll call f today.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 February 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't care what it takes yanc3y, lie to her... tell her prior's gameworn jersey is in it for her.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 5 February 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll tell her yr mark prior!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 5 February 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll do the free league. when i finnish dead last it will sting a little less if i hadn't spent money on the thing.

dyson (dyson), Thursday, 5 February 2004 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

you are a cruel, cruel man Yanc3y...

but whatever it takes.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 6 February 2004 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, it looks like it will be a free-league (unless we can get 19 people willing to chip in $6.25 for the pay-league).

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 9 February 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the count so far?

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 9 February 2004 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I think "algorithim capability" may exceed my baseball nerdiness. Did felicity sign up yet or should I send her more annoying txt msgs?

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Conditionally (upon posting to this thread):
17) David R.'s friend

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 17:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, gygax!, scratch my friend from the list - the siren song of fantasy baseball doesn't work on him no more. Not even the promise of a throwback jersey.

What's the deal w/ Miss Feeelicitay?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 10 February 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hey gygax!, perhaps there are some folks from the mick's liver who could round out the league. they lack not for passion, if only for the 'stros and o's.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

very true! i will round them up.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm down if you need someone to fill out the league. I'll go the pay route, too, the possibility of a vintage Rick Sutcliffe jersey on my back is too tempting to pass up.

*fakes to third, throws to first*,
Mattbot

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

senor gygax!, what is the scoring system going to look like? HR, RBI, AVG, Hits, SB, CS, OPS, Runs, BB... anything else? for pitchers will it be W, ERA, K, SV, Hold, Hits+BB/game, anything else?

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Hehe... I've been thinking about this. But I think I'll do a blend like last year...

Definite Batters/Fielders stats:
OBP
SLG (yes, separate unless there is an issue with this)
BB
HR
SB
CS
RUNS

Up for debate:
RBI
OPS (not just OBP and SLG separately BUT an additional on-base PLUS slugging for even more of a sabermetric emphasis)
Fielding %
Errors
Strikeouts (a negative stat)
Hits
Doubles
Triples
IBBs
Total Bases

Definite Pitching Stats:
K
BB
HR
Wins
WHIP (BB+K/Inning)
ERA
Saves
Holds

Up for debate:
Balks
IBBs
Batters Grounded Into Double Plays

Comments/Questions/Concerns?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

And a very large hello to Mattbot!

Thank you very very much for coming by! I'd love to have Dr. Morbius, Brent O. (who I should talk to about next week), and Brett over here.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

RBI is a definite in my book.
OPS, Fielding % & Errors are fine with me.
Negative K's are good.
Hits are a must.
2B's & 3B's seem redundant as we already have slugging (and perhaps OPS).
IBB's are trivial for all but your man Barry.
Total Bases leave me indifferent.
I like the induced double play idea for pitchers.

let me know when things are finalized, i'm creating a database to try to sort out some things. works wonders for football, hoping it'll do the same for baseball.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and i've always been a fan of the runs created stat (runs + rbi -HR).

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

NO FIELDING PERCENTAGE! OR ERRORS!

If there must be a choice between the two, I would vote for percentage over just the # of errors (which really doesn't mean much in & of itself unless measured against the # of opportunities the Gold Glover / klutz had to field the ball).

Should I start a VORP campaign?

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Wouldn't the double plays induced stat be somewhat misleading though? I mean, the pitchers with the huge WHIPs are going to have more opportunities to induce batters into double plays, so it's not necessarily a decent measure of a pitcher's skill. Of course, a lot of stats aren't indicative of a pitcher's skill... and maybe double plays induced favors ground-ball pitchers more than high WHIP pitchers... hmm.

I guess what I'm trying to say is no more Shawn Estes on any team, fantasy or real!

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i could be persuaded.

when's the draft?

jq higgins, Wednesday, 11 February 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Registration begins soon and I held the draft last year 3/23. We're a good 10.5 weeks out at this point.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

and is it possible to say "so nice to see you higgybaby" with enough sincerity, chutzpah, and je ne sais quoi to persuade you?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Is there not even an option for runners thrown for catchers or outfield assists? Why must fantasy baseball hate on defense so much?

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 11 February 2004 23:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i know! i'm sure there is a more comprehensive fantasy league but this is yahoo! and it is cheap (well free!).

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 12 February 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if the draft is on the 23rd of march i may have some problems.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 13 February 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

suggest an alternate time then!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 February 2004 17:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm away from march 20th 'till april 4th.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm.... opening day is 4/4/04. do you know about draft order preselection?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

i know nothing of how this draft system would work. i'm new.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 13 February 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Well... yahoo! has this draft pre-selection in the event you are unable to make the draft which allows you to pre-select your draft order.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i.e. you can rate oh say Bill Mueller as your #1 overall choice, #2 A-Rod, #3 Vlad, etc.

Leee Majors (Leee), Friday, 13 February 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, you can put me down as a definite yes.

jaymc (jaymc), Saturday, 14 February 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

BUMP so Gygax! can offer some info on A) where to send moolah (if necessary) and B) when we can make our teams.

Yeah, it seems silly to BUMP a thread that's only 4 removed from the top, but blah blah blah.

David R. (popshots75`), Monday, 16 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey dude, I'm out of the office but yahoo! has the following msg on the fantasy baseball site:

"2004 season coming soon
Registration for the 2004 Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Baseball season will begin in mid-February.

If you would like to be notified when this and other fantasy games begin, and get exclusive sports commentary, expert analysis and tips, then sign up for the Yahoo! Sports Newsletter now."

Pay-league and non-pay league may still be an option. Details soon to follow.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 17 February 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, Yahoo! is all ready for registration. I've registered one league (the free one) and will be working on it tonight and tomorrow. Should be all set by Friday at the latest.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:02 (twenty-two years ago)

noice.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

hi. i'm a big ilx lurker. i'm interested in joining up with you all if there's still an open slot.

i played in a fantasy league last year full of music nerds, and one guy no one knew blew us all away. i think i got third. we're not inviting him this year...

William Stichter (the leglo), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

ps.- it's perhaps more preferrable to list me by login name: the leglo

W Stichter / the leglo (the leglo), Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

so how might one access the league info? or am i missing something

jq higgins, Wednesday, 18 February 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Herr Commissioner will give us the league id# and password come Friday.

Leee Majors (Leee), Thursday, 19 February 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Davel (Davel), Friday, 20 February 2004 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i got the following message:

There was a problem:
• There was a temporary problem with the server. Please try again shortly.

i'll try again later.

the only thing you will rule will be my dust

cinniblount (James Blount), Sunday, 22 February 2004 09:10 (twenty-two years ago)

that would be a welcome break from how hard I'm ruling the entire league in fantasy basketball.

"I do not accept the challenge, because there IS no challenge. But I will be GLAD to beat you up a second time." --Clubber Lang, ghetto prince, quoted from memory and therefore probably incorrectly

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i would say yes. perhaps they've forgotten to check back for the league information. mattbot does not get to use this excuse.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll get to it - I'm in a deathstruggle w/ multiple debtors & inept mechanics at the mo', but will dispatch them post-haste & hop on the monkey train ASAP.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 24 February 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry gygax - just registered as the St. Kilda Bouncers.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep getting a message that I am "not in this league".

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

OK - sorry - I am now in the league as 'The Cronies'.

Kerry (dymaxia), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, I'm all signed up. I'm glad I didn't go with The Edie BALCOs since another team already has a BALCO-related name and two in one league would just be overkill!

perhaps they've forgotten to check back for the league information. mattbot does not get to use this excuse.

Apologies to any board designers hanging around here, I just can't get used to this damned layout...

mattbot (mattbot), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad I didn't go with The Edie BALCOs since another team already has a BALCO-related name and two in one league would just be overkill!

cinniblount's team name is "W8 GURUs"!

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Monkey Robot Fun is ready to bone or be boned!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 February 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

should we let aaron w do it?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 February 2004 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

what's his deal? he's never even posted here and he recently posted a baseball thread on ILE and said "this should probably go on ILB"... ???

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll ask him tomorrow (we work together now!).

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 26 February 2004 02:57 (twenty-two years ago)

sounds nice but tell him this year there's a "do not cut" provision that prevents certain "high-performance" players from being released.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

what is the biggest roto league you've participated in? don't you think it's more fun when there's more teams?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 27 February 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't get it - what's with the "do not cut" provision. why would you cut someone who is doing well¿

did something sinister happen last year¿

dyson (dyson), Friday, 27 February 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

If I remember correctly, Aaron W - threatening to run the table, or go wire-to-wire, or whatever - dropped his entire team & picked up every available Detroit Tiger.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 February 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I don't get why anyone would do that. Someone enlighten me as to the positive fantasy sports benefit, please, as I am very dense.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 27 February 2004 06:12 (twenty-two years ago)

There isn't one.

he didn't do it til the final weekend

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 27 February 2004 08:57 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but WHY did he do it at all?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 27 February 2004 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd love to do it but Im too caught up in my $$ league to actually have time for any other teams. Damn.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 27 February 2004 13:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, I wanna be in a money league where we play for money and I lose money and other people get my money because I WANT MONEY!

Sorry, what?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:28 (twenty-two years ago)

$150 and your in.

Chris V (Chris V), Friday, 27 February 2004 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, what?

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:28 (twenty-two years ago)

WHOMEVER WANTS AN ADDITIONAL ILBASEBALL MONEY LEAGUE SAY "AYE" (and kindly suggest a denomination for the stakes).

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 27 February 2004 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

aye!

anything is cool with me.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

AYE! I am new like sprout to this "money" thing, so any denomination that won't lead to my car getting repossessed is cool w/ me.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 27 February 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

aaron has been alerted. hold yr noses.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I was gonna retire a champion (even though I didn't win)... but... maybe I could join.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 27 February 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

We're up to 19 managers... only one spot left. Who will it be?

Mr. Broheems? B61? Felicity? David R.'s mystery friend?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 27 February 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron and Yancey should just comanage a teaam since they are lovers and all.

bnw (bnw), Friday, 27 February 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

it belongs to felicity! has anyone contacted her? should i actually call her like i said i would earlier?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 27 February 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I was under the impression she was contacted and said 'nay'! Work those digits, hoss!

David R. (popshots75`), Saturday, 28 February 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, like women can't say no to yancey

cinniblount (James Blount), Saturday, 28 February 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, i actually emailed her today, we shall see.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 28 February 2004 02:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, I said I wanted in! I thought I had time to register! (I've been busy thinking up a name!)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 01:24 (twenty-two years ago)

You can change your name any time you want.

Leee the Whiney (Leee), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I'm in!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 06:34 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i finally finished my database but i don't think it will do me much good. according to my calculations, based on last years stats and this years scoring system, the second highest ranking pitcher would former twins reliever latroy hawkins.

the hitters look good but my pitchers are all out of whack. the scoring system we have this year does seem to favor the relievers though. out of the 10 scoring statistics starters by definition are ineligible from 30% of them. they have the advantage for wins but the disadvantage for hrs so that's sort of a wash (not entirely but close enough).

i'm giving serious consideration to going after one proven starter, maybe one proven closer and the rest set up men/spot starters.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

interesting... i might edit out Save Opportunities then. What do you all think?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah get rid of that one

actually it should just be triples, walks allowed, embarrassing sexual scandals, ass-in-uniform rating, and brawls incited

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

...and brawls incited

well hell, looks like i won't go after pedro this year.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i like the idea of getting rid of save opps because that has no bearing on the pitchers ability, it's reflective of when he enters the game. it would be like having a category for games started. maybe appearances would be better, it would certainly benefit set up men who don't qualify for holds.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

in my other league we have HBP as an offensive stat (incidentally, yahoo's WHIP calc. includes HBP this year).

I'm pulling save opps out, thanks for the feedback! Please let me know if anything else is lacking/superfluous, and let's talk about it here.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:12 (twenty-two years ago)

also wrt: HBP in my other league

i had to kindly remind my friend that a pitcher's offensive stats don't count when he told me his first round pick would be clemens.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:13 (twenty-two years ago)

as much as i hated it last year because it killed me in the mick's liver league, i like the idea of factoring a players fielding into the mix. there's something to be said for having other assets besides plate prowess. but it's by no means a deal breaker for me, i can live with out it just as easily. it would be nice not to have to wonder if hank blalok was helping or hurting me when he goes 1 for 3 with a run scored and two errors.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

otto = rangers' management lo these many years

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no problem w/ adding one fielding category, which might surprise those of you who put up with my voluminous anti-fielding-stat bitchfest last year. My main problem w/ fielding stats (besides me drafting a cadre of Steel-Toed Boots last year) was the redundancy of having Fielding % AND Errors - I'd think having just the Fielding % would be sufficient, ideally w/ some sort of Mininum Limit to the # of fielding opportunities (so folks that dump the season early don't get to skate away w/ the category at the expense of folks sticking it out).

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, fielding should count, but only if we don't geek it out too much, just do straight percentage

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree. a players defensive abilities are an important part of the game and that should be reflected.

dyson (dyson), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

okay fielding is back in (i'm easy).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 3 March 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

fantasy baseball draft tips courtesy of mcsweeneys. rule #9 has been a problem for me in the past, most notably about 7 years ago when i drafted todd worrell in the next to last round of the draft, one year after he had retired.

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, most certainly. I will titter bemusedly at your trash talk, Leee, confident in the knowledge that I am your father.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Alas! What a calamitous turn of fortune this would be if true! But be that as it may, take heed, for your mother's corpulence hinders her ability to jump to conclusions!

Leee Skywalker (Leee), Wednesday, 17 March 2004 22:50 (twenty-two years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 18 March 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

And here's a riposte to my little friend Leee... thank you for referring tastefully to my mother's weight problem, but you must be confused, as my mother is quite slim. Perhaps the double shadow thrown upon the earth by your own mother's eclipse-inducing girth--

--nah, this is goin' nowhere.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 18 March 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i just realized there will be 2 games (NYY vs. TB) retroactive to the draft time. That's not a problem with anybody is it?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't plan on drafting any Yanks or DRays, so I'm cool. Besides, we can't change the draft day anyway, right?

O.Leee.B. (Leee), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

but damian moss is a D-Ray! I don't know, do you guys want to change the draft day?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

changing the draft day is definitely an option, my other league did it

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess the biggest question is: does retroactively counting 2 NYY/TB games cause a big problem (ie, unless baldelli goes 8-9 with 4 HRs)?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

What would be the new draft day?

Fucking A JOSE CRUZ is a D-Ray! We gotta reschedule!

David R. (popshots75`), Wednesday, 24 March 2004 20:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Naw, keep the draft day the way it is. It's like the only time I can guarantee I'll be home.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 25 March 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd vote for changing the draft day to sometime prior to the 30th, as from that day i'll be in denmark, making the draft time about 3am locally...
or, i'll just make a huge-ass list of pre-rankings.

the leglo (the leglo), Thursday, 25 March 2004 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Woah, dudes --- what happened? I just tried to register and it said "league was full".

Gygax0r - I thought I had claimed a spot way upthread.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, i don't know what to say...?

i mean, the only way to truly "reserve" a spot would have been to have joined the league!

i posted on ILE no less than three times about the league being open and inviting folx to register.

if anyone is willing to step down to let Mr. Broheems in that would be cool. I can send out a note if someone is feeling iffy about the league.

But yeah, I'm sorry. I almost emailed you if you read upthread.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, that is total fucking bullshit. This is why I've never been in favor of having satellite boards. I mean, thing is I *have* been checking in here from time-to-time, just not every day. I've clicked on this thread, but I guess I just didn't catch this "last call" (??) for sign-ups or whatever (I did read the discussion about save-opportunities upthread). But I was one of the first people to respond to your initial thread that I wanted in again. AND I'm an OG participant from last year. I mean, I'm as active a manager as your gonna find; I was managing my team competitively right up until the last day of the season. I shouldn't have to give up my spot to a bunch of lurkers who will probably bail the second their team does poorly. And fuck this "almost" emailed BS; would it have been that hard to take 30 seconds to send a reminder? Or a quick post on some thread I was on at ILM/ILE?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I will figure something out because you're absolutely right. But I still don't understand why you didn't register?

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno! I just never saw the announcements, as I said. I've been checking in, but not every day; maybe I was thinking I'd see like a draft thread or something. Whenever I clicked on this thread it was like, the discussion about what stat categories to use, or a bunch of posts of general baseball talk. Again, I'm just trying not to get too roped into satellite boards, is all. I waste enough time on ILE/ILM as it is! Sorry if I flew off the handle for a sec there, but it's like, I'm on ILM/ILE all the time. It would have taken 20 seconds for someone to see me on some thread and post a quick "Dude, why haven't you signed up on Yahoo yet?"

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

errr... gygax will figure this out. why take it so personally? no offense, but 20 other people found the time to sign up...

okay, Broheems is official. I apologize for any inconvenience!

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Also Yancey didn't you, like, abandon your team last year when you started sucking? Yeah, I think you did.

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

He was just heartbroken I kept turning down his trade requests for Aurilia.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

no offense, but 20 other people found the time to sign up...

Awright now we got some REAL smack talking! Let's PLAY BALL!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 26 March 2004 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I'm getting smack talk from the great "otto midnight". Remind me who the fuck you are again?

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Folx, just a reminder that it's never to late to check out the Introduce Yourselves thread for a recap on who's who.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

christ broheems, you sound like rog without the sense of humor. loosen up.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, it's cool otto! I gots no beef with you, man. That team-abandoner Yancey is the one that cheesed me off. Sorry if I got irritated.

David R.'s got the right idea - PLAY BALL!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:15 (twenty-two years ago)

no worries and you have my pledge that no matter how bad my team gets (and if history is any indicator it will get pretty f'ing awful) i won't abadon it.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:18 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever broheems, i was only trying to stop your pouting at gygax. there were a million better ways you could've handled securing your team than to come at him, who quite unselfishly has adopted the role as our commissioner.

and since i don't remember last year's ILB league at all, i probably did abandon my team. my in-person league has always been my priority, which i think most people know. i can hardly defend abandoning a squad, but yr bitching that you weren't coddled enough rankled. anyway, let's settle this imaginary spat on the imaginary field!

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's all good, lover.

Bring it on!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 26 March 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

If there are any people wanting to sign up at the last minute, I'm willing to give up my place. I've already got a fair bit on my plate and in retrospect, it was probably a mistake for me to sign up in the first place.

broheems i weren't here but i totally had your back

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 29 March 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay, I hate to do this, people, but I think I'm going to have to back out of the league. I know that y'all have said that you can put as much time into it as you want, but I really don't think I'll be able to put any time into it.

Also, and perhaps more importantly, I don't know anything about baseball.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 30 March 2004 18:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is going to be there tonight? I will try, but I don't know if my sister's computer is working correctly.

19 teams - this draft will take about five hours....

Kerry (dymaxia), Thursday, 1 April 2004 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i will be. my other (17 manager) league took 2 hours last night!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

So by my count we're going to have like 400 picks... which means the later rounds should be VERY, VERY fun!!

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i believe i might be autodrafting this evening, but i ain't sure. got a work function to go to and work itself. i'm gonna try to sort out time to do the first few rounds at least tho.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 1 April 2004 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm calling in sick to the night job tonight so i can do the draft on my terms. i have a 12-pack of goose island in the fridge and plenty of gin and tonic in reserve so you may see me drafting rick burleson or carl yastrzemski towards the end of the night.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck, I have Yaz #1 on my pre-draft list. OTTO YOU BASTARD.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Thursday, 1 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and I'll be there, but I'll have to switch to auto every once in a while to put my kids to bed, the little pains in the ass.

Bud Selig (Leee), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The draft applet opens at 5:30 PST/6:30 MST/7:30CST/8:30EST and upon entry the random draft order will be unveiled.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 1 April 2004 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn I forgot about that work function tonight..... Oh well. I'll be live drafting I think.

So I tried to get on and couldn't. Guess I can't do the live draft, even though I tried for one hour and a half, and now all my rankings will be screwed up. :(

Kerry (dymaxia), Friday, 2 April 2004 00:48 (twenty-two years ago)

i managed to make it for the 14th round (all the way from tai-fucking-pei) but couldn't do anything. java was all screwy - but that's okay i preranked alot of players ahead of time.

Surely you're talking to me.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:00 (twenty-two years ago)

And I have a surplus of 3 OFers too.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

do you need a 2b or 3b leee?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

he needs a 3b.
aside from ramirez (who i know i'm not getting) there'a no one in leee's of that's worth mueller.

dyson (dyson), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Er which team is Leee?

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Pronounced Miller

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 April 2004 04:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean Burroughs was taken late by someone, who perhaps already had someone at 3b. That might be a player to go after.

he was in the draft pool and i took him. if you look at the draft results it says "empty" for the slot where i took him. it also shows empty for the spots where i took joe mauer and danny kolb. hopefully they'll be put on my team by the time their teams start playing.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 2 April 2004 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

yahoo updated the rosters. kolb, matsui, mauer and brian roberts (didn't know i'd drafted him) are on my team. all is well in the kingdom of precision ottos.

FYI: ELMER DESSENS STILL SUCKS

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm gonna need some outfield help. Weird, considering that the first OF I took was JD FUCKING DREW in the 8th round...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 2 April 2004 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

So are the teams setup at only 21 members or do we pick up a couple more off of waivers?

I'm going to have to be schooled a bit on how this all works, I've never been in a Fantasy league before.

earlnash, Friday, 2 April 2004 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

wow. i have a terrible offense. i was terrible in the mml fbl, too, but i didn't do any pre-ranking. i would have thought that pre-ranking and leaving my draft in the hands of the gods would have yielded a respectable result.

ach...

anyone willing to trade some o for a starter?

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

we're set at 21, if you want to pick someone up, you'll need to drop someone.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

j.q., what's your team? I might be able to hook yez up....

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the remaindermen.

since i know there's an assload of bosox-sympathiszers trolling these parts, i could also part w/ nomaaaaaahhhh or trotsky for the right price.

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

nommaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

aaaachilleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees!

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me about it. the baseball gods are angry gods. i guess they didn't like my crack about daal yesterday. i got stuck w/ four gimps!

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 15:51 (twenty-two years ago)

on further review, j.q., I'm not sure I have anyone you'd want, offense-wise. I need more pitching bench-support, but all the rest of my bench guys are light bat, insurance-men. plus I have neifi perez because, y'know, he's neifi fuckin' perez.

but feel free to make me an offer!

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:52 (twenty-two years ago)

which team is yours?

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaron, let me know if you want to ditch a 2nd baseman. I'm the heavily favored Tamil Tigers.

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 2 April 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Draft Shockah! Leee doesn't get Mueller in the draft? wtf

lawrence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Cool... I'll take a look.

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

IMPORTANT MESSAGE REGARDING GIMPS:

If you currently have a GIMP, do not fret! There is a designated DL spot which allows you to keep ONE injured player on the DL. As long as there is someone on the DL you will be able to pick up a free agent or someone off the waiver wire.

If you have more than one gimp, I recommend you either bench him or release him dependent on the injury prognosis and potential value of the player.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

j.q.: I am The Starfighters! I've got some nice-looking but light-hitting mofos on me bench, and some better hitters on my actual team...perhaps I could interest you in one of them for Mr. Miller?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

well, since there's no way you'd be daft enough to part w/ pujols, let me say that jenkins, alou, dye and the cabreras have piqued my curiosity.

i could do some miller-based dealing.

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

if pitching didn't count my money would be on blount to run away with this thing...

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

j.q. check yr team for a trade offer.

yanc3y OTM.

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

who is pronounced miller? i've got a trade offer out to you.

otto midnight (otto midnight), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE = anything miller/mueller/millar related.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 2 April 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

starboy: is lieberthal untouchable? just say the word, man. i'm still open to negotiations.

j.q. higgins, Friday, 2 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Draft Shockah! Leee doesn't get Mueller in the draft? wtf

How could I when dyson picked him up in the THIRD ROUND¡ I oughta go to Taipei and kick his head in.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

J.Q.: biggest prob with lieberthal is that after him I got no catcher, as Castro is a backup as far as I can tell, #2 on the ESPN depth chart. Toss in Santiago, make me an offer, we'll talk. (But the Cabreras are off the table for realz though.)

Not having any women in the league: C or D? (Not our fault, but still.)

Having a whole bunch of light-hitting platooning position players on the bench but no backup pitchers: D or Dud?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well Kerry isn't exactly chopped liver. Or the Mickster's for that matter.

Vitamin Leee (Leee), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost.

But there is one female in the league! She's a cool Chicagoan.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

my bad, I didn't realize that was Kerry. who's "the Mickster"?

Talking out of my ass: Typical or Stupid?

Begs2Differ (Begs2Differ), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Ass-talk is classic (unless it's Jim Carrey).

I want the waiver period to be OVER so I can drop 31|\/|3|4 |)3553|\|5. (Yahoo's pre-rankings, BTW, suck in a leech-like fashion.)

If anyone wants to talk trade, I'm open to offers about stuff. My team = Monkey Robot Fun.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 2 April 2004 18:21 (twenty-two years ago)

oh and apparently Ramon Castro WILL be the starting catcher, but he's also scheduled to miss some time in May to go on trial for sexual assault, yay, I drafted the rapist, why don't I check these things first?
