I'm not sure what drugs have to do with this, unless you know more than is apparent from that thread. Ever dealt much with a bipolar person in a full blown manic episode?

yes

god he's still as boring as he always was - drugs or not.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:19 (twenty years ago)

OK, if he is actually ill, that sucks. And its confusing. And I dont know how to play the game anymore (too many friends with this problem, I cant handle it, I know thats not fair but eh).

Trayce (trayce), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:21 (twenty years ago)

There's no way anybody on ILX can talk him down from this, and it seems to me that it's a mistake to try -- it just keeps him amped up. Part of me agrees with blount above, but another part thinks that would put him in danger. He's going to crash sooner or later, and then everybody will have their blessed peace and quiet.

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 1 May 2005 23:51 (twenty years ago)

or some admin could give me his ip address and I'll keep him off ilx.

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Monday, 2 May 2005 00:32 (twenty years ago)

seriously if john d was banned how is this hippie still around?

John was banned for posting 35 threads in a row of utter nonsense, from what I can see Aaron isn't doing that. As long as he confines himself to a couple of things then I think banning him would be a very bad move indeed - especially as he has become a member of this community and people seem to like him.

(Disclaimer - I know very little about Aaron and before this episode would have struggled to attach a personality to him beyond recognising his username. Sometimes ILE just seems too big to keep track of)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:40 (twenty years ago)

Couple of things = couple of threads.

(Real answer - four years into this thing and its a bit late to suddenly start banning people for psychotic episodes now isn't it?)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 May 2005 00:42 (twenty years ago)

MattDC very OTM. We cant set that kind of precedent anyway, its somewhat discriminatory I fear.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

the precedent's already been set! how come john's illness was worth persecuting but aaron's wacky custos like satire of illness get a free pass?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:08 (twenty years ago)

The only reason John was banned was because he was posting thread after thread after thread of the same bollocks. He wasn't persecuted for his illness, he was persecuted for making the board unusable and you know that full well, Blount.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:15 (twenty years ago)

(And I would take all this mass sympathy for Aaron stuff a lot more seriously if I hadn't read some of the 'comical' posts on those threads)

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 May 2005 01:16 (twenty years ago)

i think coz jd's sprawled across the new answers page making ilx unusable while ah's is just making a couple of threads dedicated to the purpose v. creepy and unpleasant?

my thoughts exactly, including the disclaimer. Also this is just a day of abusive behavior, we gave d4hlem more chances than that. I think everyone has a right to expect consistent behavior out of the mods but I also think that we're delivering reasonably consistent behavior.

charleston charge (chaki), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah he's been doing this for most of the time he's been here really, it started off almost literally carboncopy custos but he didn't really get any reaction with that so he's ramped it up slightly each time to make it more EXTREME. attempts at whatever this hippie's notion of friendship were didn't pan out so he went the 'i do believe i'll start threads about myself' route. the only mental illness this guy's afflicted with is narcissism. ignoring him might be the best route (as with other trolls) but if you sincerely believe he's ill (to be honest i can buy that his parents kicked him out of the house) then banning him would seem to be definitely the most humane action for aaron's sake.

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 17:51 (twenty years ago)

question: when threads are moved to other boards can people who've been posting on that thread or even started that thread continue to post on it if they've been banned from the board said thread's been moved too?

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Tuesday, 3 May 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

It does, actually. He was doing this sort of thing before, calling it cutting satire. That is part of why people are somewhat ambivalent to his claims of illness.

-- Andre Dawson (power.strik...), May 3rd, 2005.

he is ill. he called me on the phone before he disappeared for a while. he sounded unwell, he was laughing in a very odd manner and was talking so fast and over-the-top as to sound bordeline incoherent. the first thing i thought is that it was some kind of manic episode. i didnt hear from him for two weeks after that.

he claims he is now just 'messing' with ILX but he's kidding himself if he thinks that. he said to me that he 'just can't resist' posting. its clearly a compulsion, whether hes still in a manic episode or not.

i considered aaron to be a good friend of mine, and we had gotten to be somewhat close i suppose. he trusts me, which is why i have been afraid to say anything directly to him and have refrained from posting on his recent threads. i had no idea what his reaction would be to any criticism from me.

but now he's clearly crossed the line, epecially in regard to posting his private AIM conversations with Emily/Roxymuzak and displaying delusional stalker behavior. and his posting of the pic of caitlin was totally uncalled for. he is clearly unwilling to walk away and help himself, so i would suggest that banning him would be the best course of action.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

I should think that would be a rule already.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 20:57 (twenty years ago)

hi dere

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:01 (twenty years ago)

the rule, as I believe I've seen it explicitly stated before (and not just by me) goes something like this: information is considered as personal as that person keeps it. If you use your real name, give out the city you live in, whatever, you don't have a right to ask that it be removed, whether it's posted by you or others. If on the other hand, personal information that you have never revealed on the board gets posted by someone else, you have every right to ask that it be removed. Does that sound right?

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

yep

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

I appreciate all the work the moderators do and understand it is their job, and not mine, but "hard and fast" rules on ILX have been enforced exactly never, so why start pretending they exist or can be reasonably enforced w/o bias now? Barry and gareth otm? OH SHIT REAL NAMES etc.

it's not a policy issue, it's a guy going nuts and really fucking people over. Ban the IP. Should've been banned after this thread was started.

Ive never told him anything particularly personal and please, people need to stop treating him like he's evil if he is sick (he's emailed me directly in recent days but didnt explain a thing to me). I am teetering on the side of caution, but this is way out of hand.

if you're bothered about him, fine, give him a call. i think the concern is about personal information being posted. other than that, doesn't really matter, right?

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:20 (twenty years ago)

actually, my apologies, i can't sleep! do what you think best, obv

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:22 (twenty years ago)

You're right, though, Gareth. Respecting the context of someone's bad behavior is a courtesy, not a responsibility.

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:29 (twenty years ago)

But I'd like to think that ILX hangs on to that notion of courtesy, at least a little bit. If it (we) didn't, would we give a shit how bad Aaron is acting?

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:41 (twenty years ago)

He's posting personal info and being an ass -- they'd care; if he was just acting unstable, I don't think it would have even been brought up (any of us could name a dozen examples of that being the case with other posters). I'm not sure that kind of courtesy does its object any good.

But it's certainly not required, and I wouldn't consider it expected. It's always reasonable for people to be treated according to their behavior, which is all the more reason to learn to regulate that behavior, whatever the obstacles might be. (As much as that may sound holier-than-thou, pointing out that I'm Bipolar-I myself would sound ... bipolier than thou.)

Tep (ktepi), Tuesday, 3 May 2005 23:53 (twenty years ago)

bipolier than thou
Hahahaha.

OK, I see your point. Another aspect is the fact that AZ is responding exactly the same to kindness and yelling — he's so spazzed out I doubt he can tell the difference between them. So everybody should treat him the way that makes them feel best...?

And for what it's worth, "you ridiculous little come sock" gave me a roffle.

Curious George (Bat Chain Puller) (Rock Hardy), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:01 (twenty years ago)

It looks kind of out of place, but someone emailed me about the thread (I don't think they were who they signed as, so I'm not being coy with the "someone"), so at that point I felt compelled to say something, even if it was just ... random contempt.

Whatever Aaron's problem, it's not something ILX, its moderators, or most of its posters can help with, so when that's the case: treat the symptoms as though the disease didn't exist.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Thats quite fair.

What if, just to play devils avocado here, it was Ned suddenly acting like this though? Would we dismiss him as a troll? Tell him to piss off? Ban him?

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 00:58 (twenty years ago)

Ned has a more established behavioral pattern. Aaron has been like this, to an extent, for some time on the noise board.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

But yeah, ban Ned.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:01 (twenty years ago)

Done.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

You guys can ban me if you want, I won't mind.

(xpost DRAT NED WINS AGAIN)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:05 (twenty years ago)

Haha I was going to use you as the example instead Dan! =) Oh its the same thing really ;) *ducks and flees*

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I banned Dan too.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:52 (twenty years ago)

I smell an incipient coup. It has the stink of Tim Horton's to it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

I appreciate all the work the moderators do and understand it is their job, and not mine, but "hard and fast" rules on ILX have been enforced exactly never, so why start pretending they exist or can be reasonably enforced w/o bias now?

You're right, strict rules have never been enforced, but maybe we should give it a shot. The one regarding personal information is pretty clear, it's even in the FAQ kinda. The rest of the guidelines the mods follow are totally just guidelines and by necessity vary according to situation and poster. We just kinda use our own little internal karma point system and you've got to trust us to do it. If I ever did something that was overstepping my bounds as a mod, I would hope my privs would be revoked.

it's not a policy issue, it's a guy going nuts and really fucking people over. Ban the IP. Should've been banned after this thread was started.

Just so we're all clear, afaik Andrew is the only one who can do this, and even leaving out work and personal obligations, he's on a different clock than us.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:02 (twenty years ago)

What if, just to play devils avocado here, it was Ned suddenly acting like this though?

Like Dean says -- or to rephrase Dean, in case he doesn't agree with what I'm saying -- it's still about the behavior, it's just that in Ned's case, he has such a huge backlog of not-posting-my-love-letters-to-him built up that if he suddenly started posting my love letters, he'd get a few stern talkings-to (and no further love letters) before the bad behavior outweighed the good.

Even then, it's a question of degree -- if Ned were to start abusing his mod powers to delete huge amounts of ILM, response wouldn't be any slower just because of his being Ned.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:05 (twenty years ago)

we would throw a party in his honor IMMEDIATELY

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:24 (twenty years ago)

If Ned started in like that, people'd assume his account has been hacked.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

And then, the fucking party.

Andre Dawson (deangulberry), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:27 (twenty years ago)

ned should delete large parts of ilm.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

At the very least he should delete all those photos of that fellow with the shadeshifting tie.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 02:44 (twenty years ago)

come on, when Ned snaps, we all know what will happen.

caitlin oh no (caitxa1), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:02 (twenty years ago)

sorry, yeah

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

Gear, I do love you. :-)

The only love letters from Tep I would ever post are the ones involving the pumpkin and the schnauzer.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 03:30 (twenty years ago)

delete huge amounts of ILM,

please please do this

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 05:32 (twenty years ago)

I almost feel like I'm being urged on.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 05:37 (twenty years ago)

Has AZ been posting more personal info about me since the last time I looked? I'm intrigued as to where he got it from, because he's not someone I can ever remember speaking to at all.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 07:05 (twenty years ago)

why are they called "lizards" ?

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 10:47 (twenty years ago)

Search

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:25 (twenty years ago)

Or, do what most people do, blame Kate.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:28 (twenty years ago)

12-foot lizards, cosmic overlords.

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

Since when am *I* David Icke?!?!?

(OK, I do take responsibility for the ILX meme, but still.)

Lapdog Shoesnog (kate), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 12:50 (twenty years ago)

I hate to be literal-minded but I always thought it was a play on or mistyping of the word "wizards," with the added benefit of having an image like the one teeny suggests, giant dinosaurs who could trample us underfoot, if they chose to pay attention to us at all.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:32 (twenty years ago)

They look a bit like

this

Leon Jones Reynolds (Ex Leon), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

An advanced and intelligent species, they have eschewed sideburns, recognizing them to be the symbol of the devil's rot.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 13:41 (twenty years ago)

You can be literal-minded but I'm still right. Search and see, it predates the ILE breakaway.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 14:33 (twenty years ago)

That was enlightening.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

Ned, delete the Search Engine now, please.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh heavens no. That'd be unfun.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 16:50 (twenty years ago)

OK, you've passed the test, you're the real Ned- the one with the purple tie.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

I am glad to see you finally came around.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 17:54 (twenty years ago)

it's funny, at first i thought it was a land of the lost reference but then i remembered that they were sleestaks, not lizards.

Amon (eman), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 22:58 (twenty years ago)

dude is naming names (first and last) of people in his hood on ilm and talkin shit. probably not the coolest thing. he should be banned for this.

ILM mods? he is already banned on ile.

Andrew if you just wanna go ahead and either lock or delete, please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 01:53 (twenty years ago)

in that thread he is talking about releasing a comp with my music (as well as ken c, ian johnson, and jon williams) on it, which i did NOT grant him any permission to use. im sure jon, kem, and ian didnt either. legally he can't do that, right? because i sent him an email telling him to remove my tracks or else.

latebloomer: the rebel sound of grits and bacon (latebloomer), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:09 (twenty years ago)

hey Ned, sorry, I ran off to dinner right after I posted last, perhaps I answered your question on the mod board? this email works if you want to drop me a line otherwise for whatever reason.

latebloomer yes you are correct, but once it's offboard only you have the power to do something about it. :( Maybe cutty would give you some legal advice!

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 02:42 (twenty years ago)

It seems someone got to it already, good. If the banning doesn't go ahead/he gets a new name/IP, whatever, I'll watch out for more.
