i am sad that when i was at home, i briefly glanced at the RPG collection in the closet, but didn't actually take anything out and look at it.

skyrealms of jorune
star frontiers (still in box)
call of cthulhu 3rd edition
extremely beat-up copy of shadowrun
many rifts supplements but no actual rulebook
mage + many many supplements
underground (very obscure game w/ art by peter chung (aeon flux guy))
kult (scary goth occult game based on "hellraiser")
a couple pretentious indie RPGs that i am ashamed of owning now

i am pretty sad that i ditched my copies of "star wars" and "gamma world"

i have lately been seriously eyeing copies of the "elric!" RPG on ebay

underground (very obscure game w/ art by peter chung (aeon flux guy))

Is this that Watchmen-esque Mayfair Games thing with cover art by Geof Darrow? I remember being interested in it when it came out but never doing anything with it.

I purged all of my RPG collection a while back-- this thread makes me a little sad about that but not very. I mostly miss the old school Gary Gygax era AD&D stuff. (Which is funny because I don't think I ever actually played a game of 1st edition AD&D-- I mostly played D&D, a little 2nd edition AD&D, and Cyberpunk 2020. But then again, I bought and read the books for a lot of games that I never really played. I probably wasted more time making mock characters as a teenager than I ever spent playing games with other people.)

Chris F. (servoret), Monday, 9 January 2006 01:36 (twenty years ago)

cyberpunk 2020!! that game was ridiculous. it had character classes, no?

what is good in dungeon magazine for fun reading

GET EQUIPPED WITH BUBBLE LEAD (ex machina), Monday, 9 January 2006 06:24 (twenty years ago)

uhh.. shit, anything by Willie Walsh? Mostly each issue is 3 crap stories and maybe one genius one.

my nostalgia for it stems from being 14 and ordering a 3 year subscription. by the time i was 16 i had lost all interest in rpgs but i would get stoned and read arriving issues as some sort of sub-Tolkien fiction reads.

i'll try and scare up a YSI if I haven't deleted them all.

titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

it appears I deleted all the good ones. this one looks ok

i have no idea what's going on after issue #70-#80. D&D appears to have mutated into some sort of Pokemon thing after 3rd edition.

titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 02:03 (twenty years ago)

dungeon isn't as fun a read as dragon. (no lie.)

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 10 January 2006 02:57 (twenty years ago)

we play some kind of 3.0/3.5 hybrid. it's mostly 3.0 except where we have 3.5 books. well, i wish we played. we keep saying we're gonna do it and it never happens. our dwarf fighter plays too much black metal and is always at practice. our elven rogue/psionic warrior is married to our 18 chr aasimar sorceress and she teaches french and thusly can't stay up past 8:39 or so. but we can't start til about 6:30. and then the priest just got a girlfriend who is just too cute to sacrifice for some dice rolls. it's really sad.

I remember Dragon being kind of lame because they covered all rpgs and was little too geeked out for my taste.

Dragon Magainze was kind of like The Wire of my youth, in that 4 or 5 completely inessential issues would come out in, then out of nowhere there'd be a killer can't miss issue with good editorial and all your favorites in it.

Thimble allows the user to summon a Tiny water elemental.

This tiny container is usually made of silver and decorated with seed pearls. When filled with salt water and certain words are spoken for 1 full round, a Tiny water elemental appears, as if brought by a summon monster spell. Only one elemental can be called at a time. The water elemental stays until it is killed, dismissed, or one hour has passed. If the caster or the elemental takes even one point of fire damage while using the thimble of commanding water elementals then the elemental disappears and the thimble cannot be used for one week. Otherwise, the thimble is usable once a day. It is only usable by characters with summon monster or summon nature's ally on their class spell list.

Weak conjuration; CL 3rd; Craft Wondrous Item, any summon monster or summon nature's ally spell. Price: 1,000.

i bought the AD&D 2nd edition books when i was like 12. i always wanted to play, but never found anybody to play with. i still haven't got a group together to play. but i bought the 3rd edition 2 years ago anyway, for the hell of it. i also bought FRCS and a few other FR sourcebooks. i still want to play. woe is me.

the kit! (g-kit), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I hear the true heads digg original ad&d or 2nd edition...i don't know much about it.

VIDEO STRESS (blastocyst), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 22:08 (twenty years ago)

i think the only reason to still dig 1st and 2nd editions is cause the books are way more literary and archaic and old school sci-fi weird.

i have a decent collection of that really old stuff.

the newer stuff is all pretty and so on. (although, one could argue that planescape was the artistic pinnacle.)

the suck blast about the new stuff is that it's become more and more obvious that it's a business. reissuing newer and newer editions and reprinting redundant info over and over.... etc etc. when it was tsr, they did the same thing with 2nd edition.

i just try to ignore it and have fun. we finally started our new campaign up here after much grumbling and bullshit. god, it's been too long. i was a rusty DM.

SWEET.

This thread is kind of timely, just the other day while closet cleaning I found...

A) one box of ancient 1st edition modules (some meant for TOURNAMENT COMPETITIONS omg), hand drawn maps, etc I bought at a yardsale in 1995 for $5

B) one box containing 1st & 2nd edition PHBs, DMGs, Monster Manuals, and like TEN Dragonlance modules, not to mention old character sheets and a 3-ring binder containing a shit ton of notes & maps from back in my DMing dayz, including a bunch from when me & my sadly now-deceased buddy Kurt ran this ridiculous massive 2 DM campaign (we had at least 8 players each session!)

I'm excited, this is the first time in years I've had enough time to play, my sister & her husband totally play on Sundays, I might join their campaign or start a new 420-friendly one (they are straight-edge).

Yesterday at work a couple of my students (10 and 11) were whispering on the side of the yard fairly secretively. I kind of snuck over – to check and see that they weren't being too inappropriate – and overheard a moment of their conversation. To overhear: "my seventh level mage whales the flaming turrets with a double fireball spell" and "the spell deflects and burns the skin off the face of your mage" and "nuh-uh, 'cuz he's wearing a flameproof mask" countered by "so it just blinds him and turns his eyes in to jelly" etc.

I left them alone, but when I came back twenty minutes later the two kids were still going at their game, and it had turned excruciatingly violent, and was involving the names of other kids they didn't like. I told them to take a break until they weren't under my supervision. Of course (being 10 and 11) they were pissed and skulked across the yard.

Another twenty minuts later they came up to me, hangdog and baleful-eyed, and told me I was being unfair and didn't "get" what they were trying to do. I said "what are" you trying to do?" and they replied "This game A-D-&-D - you wouldn't know it" and I said "I do, and likely better than you." This threw them for a loop, so they kinda consulted each other for a moment before asking me "why do you have a problem with us playing it?" and I said "I don't have a problem with you playing it, I have a problem with you playing it wrong."

rifts was excellent!! but I only got to play it in college and our GM was kind of a stiff.

straight up RPGs require a good GM to have a decent experience and it's sometimes really tough to calculate a decent matchup between the PCs and opponents especially with gay shit like "spellcasting" involved and weird gamebreaking weapons/techniques available to everyone. shadowrun and white wolf games are completely broken in that respect IIRC

mechwarrior was cool because it was essentially a really balanced giant robot space opera with a rock-solid combat system as the central dynamic. it was basically gundam the rpg except with no space colonies. the gm's main job was keeping track of a bunch of paperwork and flipping through technical readouts occasionally to see what mecha the pcs got to blow up that week. simple tonnage takes the guesswork out of building good encounters

gff, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

Talisman! was the last game I played, but that was more of a bordgame. I remember you could play by yourself. (true nerd sadness)

sexyDancer, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

did anybody here ever get into the white wolf shit? utter offal. I can't believe I ever filled out a character sheet for it

FIFTH CYCLE

xp WW stuff is fun to read but probably not much fun to play?

gff, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

omg TALISLANTA

gff, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

never owned tunnels + trolls or whispering vault.

i was heavily into white wolf shit. gff is right, it's fun to read and boring to play.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

was White Wolf the stuff advertised in the back of Dragon, boasting that everything was on "parchment paper?" They had a spy game?

sexyDancer, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

i listed the games i still have upthread, i think skyrealms of jorune and underground are still there. totally awesome.

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 25 October 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

i liked all the language in the WW stuff; the writers at least made the stuff they raided from folklore etc have some resonance beyond throwing an AC and THAC0 on it.

Speaking of Dragon mag, did any of you guys ever play King Of The Tabletop (as it was called when it came in the middle of an issue of Dragon) or Kings & Things (as it was retitled when they released it as a boxed proper board game)? I fukin love that game, still have the boxed edition. Tom Wham = god.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 25 October 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

haha no but rifts WAS the last game i played - bro reunion on christmas day 2 years ago. we spent 3 hrs goofing off, drinking nog and making characters, 30 minutes of game time and then about 2 hrs making inside jokes about stuff that happened in high school.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 25 October 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

haha i had "world of synnibar" AND "cyborg commando"

world of synnibar = more or less RIFTS-in-space with a clunky ruleset and bad art

cyborg commando = terrible expensive box set game with skeletal rules and bad story. in the story you play a cyborg commando defending the earth from an invasion of giant cybernetic aliens who look like buffalo-sized tentacled maggots. the weirdest part was that everyone plays identical cyborgs with identical skills, attributes and enhancements. like, almost literally identical. and there were only four types of alien invaders total. so it's like a game w/ 4 monsters and 1 character class. and the box set cost $30!!!

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 25 October 2007 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

it is making me nostalgic for 3-liter bottles of pepsi and big bags of pretzels and listening to The Orb and Portishead while shaking a pair of colorfully speckled dice with no dots on them

El Tomboto, Thursday, 25 October 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

And the art on all the pieces for King Of The Tabletop/Kings & Things was by the lost genius David Trampier, who did that "Wormy" serialized color comic in Dragon.

Jon Lewis, Thursday, 25 October 2007 20:19 (eighteen years ago)

srsly dudes, i know i've said this before, but i am still down with gurps. totally cogent design, commonsense, modular, the supplemental books are well-researched and informative. love it love it love it. and i'll never play it again, ha

The most infamous and prevalent form of objectionable material is FATAL's bizarre and juvenile sexual content. For instance, character creation includes the calculation of statistics such as "Areola Size", "Vaginal Circumference Potential", and "Hymen Resistance". Worse, the game blithely condones rape as a character activity and contains many other instances of blatant misogyny, not to mention casual racism. Of secondary concern is the monstrously overcomplicated rules system, which requires unwieldy dice rolls, convoluted mathematical formula and tables for everything the designer could conceivably make one for, many of which are bizarre, such as the infamous Magical Fumbles Table and, again, sexually obsessive, such as a formula for increased penile penetration during a certain position of intercourse.

The hacking weapon enters the rectum mid-stroke, and the opponent feels pain during the following 1d4 weeks involving defecating and, if female, during alternative sexual practices. There is a 25% chance that the hacking releases (roll 1d6: on a 1-5 this is the number of chunks released, on a 6 it is runny instead) chunks of defecation from the confines of the body.

I've said it elsewhere on ILX but director's commentary on the terrible 2000 film version of 'Dungeons and Dragons', required noise board viewing. I've never actually heard the movie with the dialogue, the film is already pretty horrible but Lesser ended a film watching party once with the first 30 minutes of the commentary and it really felt like something new

ian, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)

they picked a very young insider with no prior experience to direct the film, and he's virtually incoherent as he free associates his way through what he's seeing. read aloud in SoCal late 20 year old Valley Guy voice: 'soooo like I figure and said to myself, really guys, I mean, what better way to learn how to make a major hollywood feature film than like to actually MAKE a major hollywood feature film? oh wow, there's jeremy irons again, it was pretty amazing to work with and direct such an actor, the way he goes about doing what he WOW did you see that CGI? absolutely, no idea how those guys even and some people are really serious about D&D and that's why we made sure we put in all this stuff into the film for the fans'
