I knew that would get someone's attention...
Imagine, if you will, a winter party filled with drunken high school kids. Things being what they are in Hastings, a guy I will call Chuck decided that the perfect time to show off the brand new truck that his parents bought him. He and his best friend, whom I will call Gene, arrived at the party and were a big hit. Everyone was admiring Chuck's truck, including a girl I will call Harriet. Now, Harriet and Gene had had some level of attraction before, but had never done anything about it. At this party, however, there was the right level of booze to make them both feel that they needed to take their relationship to the next level. They both disappeared after a while, but there was so much booze and carousing going on that no one noticed they were gone until Gene wandered into the kitchen. He looked HORRIBLE; everyone thought he'd been beaten up or had fallen head-first into something. He had a drunken grin and his face and wouldn't tell people what had happened to him, but he had blood all over his face and shirt. No one could figure out what had happened until Eve staggered in the front door, hair all askew and buttoning up her jeans. Chuck stared at her, then at Gene, who was looking at Eve all goofily. Chuck then made a remarkable intuitive leap, grabbed Gene by the shoulders and began shaking him. "TELL ME YOU DIDN'T GO DOWN ON HER IN MY TRUCK!" he shouted. Gene could only giggle. No amount of cleaning could get Eve's menstrual smell out of the upholstery, which meant that Chuck was forced to spend the next two months driving around with his windows down. This wouldn't normally be that big of a deal, but this party happened in early January.

The next day, Gene was extraordinarily pleased with himself until he looked in the mirror.

Now that I actually had a chance to read this thread properly (my flippant if accurate post back there was done on the fly), I'm not so much horrified as bemused. I'm not in your shoes, Paul, but I have to say that my gut feeling is that Kate has a very valid point. Why let your psychic defenses down? After all, the ultimate question is whether or not being treated like crap is in part of your contract. As it clearly sounds like that is *not* the case, hold the fuckers to the letter of the law while also noting that you fail to see the connection between such treatment and worker productivity -- if anything, it is the opposite.

Who, BTW, has never written anything as good since. He's turning into the Stephen King of anger and disillusionment.

Have you read the new introduction to the book? Oddly enough, the UCI library didn't have a copy of the novel at all, from any printing, and I ended up ordering it for a class that wants it on reserve. I read through the introduction when the book arrived and it was balanced between what I thought was the agreeably casual and the almost-suffused-with-self-importance -- he seemed both bemused and arrogant regarding the cult around book and movie.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), September 18th, 2004.

Oh yeah, my younger self would love all the CDs and books, wonder what CDRs were and be completely confused at DVDs (but I'd say something to younger self about mini-laserdiscs and that would clear it up). Definitely be amused/bemused by the Cube as well, but would really love the fact that the same desk (which originally comes from the 1920s or something) is being used. Might possibly be concerned at the fact I'd seemed to switch back to glasses from contacts, but I would assure younger self that various women over time had found them sexy, which would simultaneously reassure younger self as well as convince him that yes, sex was in fact in his future.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), March 11th, 2005.

Jordan summed up my situation well (just DVDs and video tapes for me) and Casuistry notes what can be done if you really want to see something, which I've done once or twice but not much more than that. In the long term, the exchange for me was less TV and more time on the Net and/or hanging around with people in my neighborhood, both of which have their great virtues and involve participation and discussion rather than a one-way street. Being 'out of it' is one of those states of mind, I think -- if you think TV is incredibly important, then you'll want to be in touch with it or if you're away from it you'll think you're missing something. (Tep and I have gone into lengthy discussions on this subject, though -- and beaten them into the ground!)

For my part, though I know that the folks on the respective threads are bemused, I hang around on the Amazing Race and Lost threads because a lot of good folks are there posting things that are entertaining and/or thoughtful to read. Unsurprisingly they are the only two newish series that as a result I think might be worth catching up on at some point.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), November 29th, 2004.

Heh, I love that cast commentary -- the four hobbit actors are just cutting themselves up so ridiculously, Christopher Lee all wonderfully stern and proud, Ian McKellen bemused, etc. The only absence is Viggo Mortensen, which I regret -- as he was filmed for various bits in the documentaries I can only guess it was a scheduling issue. I love Orlando Bloom and John Rhys-Davies in particular because while they're both so merrily and obviously luvvies in the grand British style, Orlando is completely enthused about everything in such a generous way and Rhys-Davies has all sorts of good stories with the satisfaction.

But all four commentaries are good in their own ways (and the director/script one is the only spot throughout where Fran Walsh directly participates; she consciously avoided participating in the documentaries because she's generally a more private person, I gather).

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 28th, 2003.

it was bankrolled by a wealthy Republican who
invested the medium-sized fortune that was necessary to collect the required number of signatures

Issa's a tool and a half -- one of the pleasures of the campaign was him publicly realizing that after having kicked down all that cash he wasn't actually going to be able to campaign about it (keep in mind he's tried to run before and failed miserably each time). And the whole industry of getting signatures and how it's done is an interesting one, to say the least. Nonetheless, those signatures were found in the first place and in sufficient numbers to prompt the recall -- one wants to figure that Issa wouldn't have gambled the money if he didn't think he couldn't find those signatures anyway.

I'm not trying to say you don't have some sharp points, O. Nate! But while I'm not surprised at the vehemence against the result here and elsewhere (and hey, I sure wasn't voting for Arnie in recall terms or actual choice of candidate!) I am surprised at the incredulity a bit. I'm bemused and annoyed but I'm not surprised in the slightest with the end result.

it only works if the Republicans run a better campaign than the Democrats. WHICH THEY DID. Nothing helps
a nefarious plot along better than abject incompetence on the part of your victim.

Quite.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), October 8th, 2003.

I never have completely reached Toby's state, but I've had my own bouts of understatement and nervousness. Keep in mind I essentially think of myself as an introvert, which apparently surprises the hell out of everyone I tell that to. I mean, I *guess* I'm an extrovert more, but it doesn't really feel like it! I wouldn't call that a false front, more just sort of a part of me that I'm often bemused at.

Working in public service at a library has certainly increased the 'deal with random people' contingent over the years -- and lord do those people who are obnoxious push my buttons. If anything I'm more short-tempered than shy around them. But in personal interactions, I 'learned,' if you will, to say hi to more people over time, to make friends less by chance and more by action. One of the nicest things anyone ever said about me was when someone at KUCI, who posted a letter explaining why she was leaving due to never feeling included there, thanked me specifically for taking the time to introduce myself and welcome her to the station, because otherwise she might have felt very alone there -- she was an articulate and thoughtful person, but indeed, terribly shy. So there is something to be said for learning to overcome those barriers in yer brain, and that means taking knocks along the way, admittedly.

-- Ned Raggett (ne...), August 1st, 2002.

But also because -- for the first time in about a decade, maybe more, I dug out my old audiobooks of Stephen Moore reading abridged versions of the first four Hitchhiker's books to act as a soundtrack for my spring cleaning over the weekend. It's a pretty great job by Moore, who of course did Marvin in the radio/TV/record versions, but he was also able to give each of the other main characters his own spin rather than simply replicating the work of Simon Jones et al.

More importantly, however, is that after many years away from the book versions of the story -- I usually dig out the radio series once a year for a listen -- I realized two clear things about Adams' work. First, a large part of my writing style in terms of humorous fiction writing comes from him and his various picaresque spins, grotesques and playing with the language. I say this not to claim I'm equal to his writing ability or that I'm slavishly following in his footsteps, but to note with a pleasant shock as to how clearly and carefully his work was inculcated into my way of working with words. I'm quite positive I use the word 'bemused' in general from a part where Adams wrote: "'Catch it?' said Arthur, then frowned in bemusement...' -- read very well by Moore and instantly returning to memory upon replaying it.

Secondly...he was, quite simply, an extremely fine writer. In the same way that something like Peanuts reads one way at one age and then another way later on, moments in the books that once seemed only amusing or slight take on newer casts, suggest new depths, reveal that Adams definitely had a lot on his mind but was able to deftly suggest many things as a result, in a framework that he more or less stumbled into after Hitchhiker's initial success on the radio, and which eventually became his core metier. From a distance, for instance, the seeming 'disappointment' of So Long not being a 'classic' Hitchhiker's story becomes an appreciation of the book's own virtues, at capturing feelings of desire and love, of suggesting something as awesome as a break between two near identical worlds, of creating a whole new conception of reality out of an instruction on a toothpick box. There's a part near the start of the book where Arthur looks out from his house and finds himself connecting with all around him, almost being able to sense other minds, in a way that's both empathetic and regarding from on high, that's very captivating to me.

Then there's something as imaginative, sad and amusing as the story of 'the Reason' in the epilogue from Life, the Universe and Everything, which somehow reduces the story of stupidity and war into a simple but sad fable, one without resolution. Listening to it was almost like heaving a great sigh, one with both warmth and melancholy, the latter predominating. Ed on one of the movie threads noted that Adams' universe in his fiction was one where humanity wasn't at the center, not even on the barest fringe, in a larger construct of existential action -- it reminds me, very much, of H. P. Lovecraft's similar conceptions, but Adams had so much which Lovecraft lacked. If Agrajaj is a Lovecraftian horror down to the name, his scenario of being constantly killed by Arthur Dent is still cosmic japery, and Lovecraft could never capture at all the simple joy of being in a beautiful park with someone you love on a late summer afternoon.

All that and he can be just so funny, making me laugh out loud when talking about the sun shining down on the burglars of Islington.

ILE can be such a cliquey place sometimes, with all these in-jokes and funny language and special ways of doing things, that I wonder how it must seem to the outsiders - do they feel excluded? do they feel intimidated? do they think we're strange and unapproachable?

And then I realise I don't care. Because it's the weird silly stuff on ILE which makes me love this place so much

Ellsworth M. Toohey (Grodd), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:25 (twenty years ago)

Nick is massively queer-identified and I think his issue is a horror of 'straights' whoever it is they fuck. I can't blame him, nor do I blame him for wanting to see the queer end of the gay march (if he were 15 he'd be looking for the other Cure fans at the mall, Dan Perry) because that's where his affinities lie. Your affinities slightly different? Fine. He's never exactly aspired to a particular set of acquisitive/conformist values he sees in many Americans - didn't need to because his talent got recognised early - and criticises the wagon-circling Puritanism which manifests itself as one national thought bubble going 'the neighbours can never know'.

Also don't think you'll see him for dust on this thread today because he's sitting in an art gallery in Chelsea with a cloth hood on, telling stories while a Japanese artist sings. There. Are you angry yet?

"adam"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 04:39 (twenty years ago)

Though adam was a friend of mine, I did not know him well
He was alone into his distance
He was deep into his well
I could guess what he was laughing at, but I couldn’t really tell
Now the story’s told that adam jumped, but I’ve been thinking that he fell

Together we went traveling, as we received the call
His destination india, and I had none at all
Well, I still remember laughing with our backs against the wall
So free of fear, we never thought that one of us might fall

I sit before my only candle, but it’s so little light to find my way
Now this story unfolds before my candle
Which is shorter every hour as it reaches for the day
But I feel just like a candle in the way
I guess I’ll get there, but I wouldn’t say for sure

When we parted we were laughing still, as our goodbyes were said
And I never heard from him again as each our lives we led
Except for once in someone else’s letter that I read
Until I heard the sudden word that a friend of mine was dead

I sit before my only candle, like a pilgrim sits beside the way
Now this journey appears before my candle
As a song that’s growing fainter the harder that I play
But I fear before I end I’ll fade away
But I guess I’ll get there, though I wouldn’t say for sure

Though adam was a friend of mine, I did not know him long
And when I stood myself beside him, I never though I was as strong
Still it seems he stopped his singing in the middle of his song
Well I’m not the one to say I know, but I’m hoping he was wrong

I’m holding out my only candle, though it’s so little light to find my way
Now this story’s been laid beneath my candle
And it’s shorter every hour as it reaches for the day
Yes, I feel just like a candle in the way
I hope I’ll get there, but I never pray

When I first saw harDCore shows in say 1980 or 1981, my reaction to slam dancing was, "Well, white people need a dance, too" - that is, people with little dancing skill or dancing wisdom nonetheless need a dance-type interaction, and running into people on purpose rather than by accident is a canny way to finesse the problem (and even to build up a sort of sophistication not based on dance-floor chops; so seeing white people dancing at raves, I had the same reaction, "White people need their dance," again a music with conventions that allowed you to put aside the lack of skill. I'm babbling.

Pretensious, toi?

Haha just about all of Nick's immediate family are writers or academics or both. He wanted to do something 'different' because his entire family were after him to write books. It might be hard to stomach if you dislike his writing here or on blog but he has actually turned down, on several occasions, begging editors at publishing houses who are after some sort of novel (I've seen it happen). He sells enough records and other people ask to collaborate with him all the time. I don't like the sour-grapes comments that have emanated from posters who are, or seem to be, here on a flying visit.

I don't preoccupy myself with what's in his blog; a problematic aspect of this diary form is that the reader forgets it's a diary and therefore meant to be mutable in its impressions. In maths terms, showing all works. People claim not to care what he thinks but they're much grumpier when he doesn't like where they live than when he does like it.

I double-checked the item online and it CLEARLY shows a game link cable. Even in the reviews, a link cable is referenced. When I look at a larger picture of the product, the first thing it says is "game link cable".

However, they must have re-packaged this set to include different materials. What I received was a light, a carrying case, a "screen protector" -- which is a cheesy piece of sticky cardboard that I would never DREAM of putting on my unit, a rechargeable battery pack, and six game storage boxes. NO LINK CABLE.

Therefore, either they have re-packaged this set, or they sent me the wrong stuff! Of course, now that I have opened it and torn through the package looking for my cable, I can hardly return it, can I?

I gave this product "one star" because the other items (especially the carrying case and the game storage boxes) WILL come in handy .. but I think it is false advertising to display pieces that are NOT included with the product any longer. Although I will find a use for many of these items, I never would have purchased it in the first place if I had known I wouldn't be getting the cable. Buyers beware! :)

I would just like to make clear that I enjoy your posts, Stormy. But man, you gotta admit, you do ask for it sometimes.

oooh, Simon Reynolds called out a rock musician?? You're kidding!! What the fuck does Simon fucking Reynolds know about rock music? Not a good goddamn thing. Fuck that guy.

well fuck me! I guess I will have to check out some of the solo material after all. Also, it looks like I'll be at that Hagerty show. god I love that guy.

OK, I gotta cut and paste one of my favorite ever posts on ILM, from the Simon Reynolds is a gobshite thread:

who the fuck is this limey simon reynolds anyway? never has he spoke of sam the sham or kiss, as far as I can tell. never has he wrestled with another human being in the dirt. never has he listened to both Dust albums. never has he said ONE THING THAT IS FUNNY. he is a jerk, like most limey critics. every CREEM writer worth his salt knows that music writers from ENGLAND ARE THE ABSOLUTE WORST.... and they are the very reason we have all had to endure the likes of Oasis and Radiohead and, heaven help us, RAVES!! Simon Reynolds is nothing, I mean nothing: think of this--once i interviewed Sky Saxon who was undergoing a blood transfusion in Hawaii and he was so feeble he could barely talk on the phone and he talked about how shriveled his cock was and how he hoped one day that shriveled cock would become hard again so that he could once again perform "Mr. Farmer" with the fervor in which it was intended: well, Mr. Simon Reynolds IS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT SHRIVELED COCK OF SKY SAXON...

people in liking music that Simon Reynolds doesn't approve of shockah.

-- Broheems (electrifyingmoj...), May 18th, 2004.

Can Mainstream Rock or Country be "street" and would Simon Reynolds like it?

-- Broheems (electrifyingmoj...), March 5th, 2004.

... but you can't help getting the feeling that Reynolds has looked around, seen that lots of hip people are listening to Prog and thought, "Hello, I've got a reputation to live up to here" and is frantically paddling to try and catch up with all those hipsters who are now hipper than he is - even tho it pretty obviously sticks in his gullet to admit that "Prog" is of any use to anyone whatsoever. Ah! The trials of the terminally hip!

Yeah, Dada is pretty OTM here. He's pretty good at making up some cute lists, but doesn't have anything interesting to say. It's like he's trying to shout, "hey I like this rock stuff too!" after years of blathering on about his precious white label garridge blah blah etc. He even claims to like the White Stripes now (after some post earlier this year where he claimed he didn't even need to listen to them. Whatever. Nobody comes to you Reynolds to learn anything about rock music anyway. It's not like he's going to write a post that parses out the differences between Hackett and Howe's guitar styles or something. He should probably go back to his beloved electronic music; as it is, he's kind of making himself look silly.

Dleone totally OTM about the omission of Cuneiform. I mean, come on.

-- Mr. Diamond (electrifyingmoj...), October 30th, 2003.

I mean I just think Simon Reynolds has created this mindset where it is so important to keep looking feverishly for the new, what with his obsessive chronicling of every happening thing, his neologisms, etc.

I love his writing, he's very intelligent, etc. But I'm wary of his "influence".

-- Mr. Diamond (electrifyingmoj...), March 21st, 2003.

Oh, that was just a lil' wink-wink *nudge* at Alex in SF, who was running down the Long Island crew on some other thread. In favor of something Simon Reynolds likes, I think.

-- Broheems (electrifyingmoj...), April 28th, 2004.

Yeah it's all a bit goofy, a joke on "'Acid Trax' is the birth of everything". Although, "Paid in Full" is interesting; although it's just "Ashley's Roachclip" mixed w/ Dennis Edwards' "Don't Look Any Further" it had a groove and feel unlike anything else in hip-hop to that point. Then throw in the Coldcut connection (working with European remixers/producers at all).

Anyway, it's all Simon Reynolds fault.

-- Mr. Diamond (electrifyingmoj...), May 6th, 2003.

The 11 minute version of "Blue Sky" on the recently released Allman Brothers: S.U.N.Y. Stonybrook 9/19/71 is one of the most blissful, perfect recordings I've ever heard.

Is Simon Reynolds gonna talk about it though? Nah, of course not; he doesn't know how to write about the accomplishments of individual musicians. He doesn't know how to parse music. But, you know, he's british. He's a disgrace and an affront to every young kid who ever tried to pick up an instrument and make their way in the world.

-- Broheems (electrifyingmoj...), February 23rd, 2004.

"just fine as an alternate version" -- er, as an "alternate version" to ... WHAT exactly? Since the fucking thing was never released, of course. And yeah, why CAN'T it be the best album of the year? It only can't because Matos has made up his mind already that it can't be (probably the same principal by which he dismissed the Shaggs WITHOUT EVER HAVING HEARD ONE NOTE of their music, I'm guessing.) Anyway, unfavorably comparing the compositions on SMiLE to a piece of "sampladelic" ("OK, Mr. Reynolds, I'm ready for my close-up!!") dancey-pants trash like that boring-ass Avalanches record is just silly. But hey, as long as it has BEATS right? Gotta have those BEATS, maaaaaaaan

-- Roy Williams Highlight (electrifyingmoj...), September 30th, 2004.

Well, Flick Of The Switch rules. Everybody knows that. I'm not sure how anyone that was sympathetic to AC/DC, and what they were about in those classic days, could deny the classic stature of that lp. Maybe simon reynolds and some of his dork-ass minions - those sad-sack clueless tin-eared hacks who like fashion over music, they may not possess the faculties to properly assess Flick of the Switch. But yeah, anyone who likes this band is probably down with Flick.

And I agree with everyone! It's totally my favorite post-puke LP. by a long-shot. I just love "Nervous Shakedown".

I am totally serious. All of my fellow AC/DC nutbrain fans -- take out your copies of Flick, and put on "Nervous Shakedown."

Now, THAT's a tune.

-- Broheems (electrifyingmoj...), May 30th, 2004.

oh, hey, Philip - glad to see you on this thread! No not at all, re: my opinion pre-1950 (that's why I raised that 'scarlet R' flag!) Yeah, I love what you wrote in your first post - the technology swallowing the technique. Very much true, with this band perhaps more than any other (GBV a poor choice for me to go off on the rant, then!) Yeah, I think I should just come clean with some basic biographical details: I live next to a jazz club and I see some outstanding young musicians come through every week, playing to - quite frankly - paltry crowds. It's just horribly depressing. I don't know how to make the case for these kids - especially on ILM - without coming across as *priviliging* the use of "real live instruments." Because, again, I certainly don't myself! But when I read Reynolds quoted on the "corpse of rock history", as above, I don't feel like he's talking about Jimi Hendrix and the White Stripes as much as he's talking about the whole notion of, like, people learning how to actually play an instrument, and play it well. Extending beyond rock into, say, these young kids just fucking tearing on ass on the rich history of african-american song from "Footsteps" to "Giant Steps". Now, that may sound "old" and "stodgy" and whatnot to a guy like Simon Reynolds, especially when - hey! - there are new white label 12"s coming in the mail. I dunno.

It's a view I'm kind of forced to surmise, considering the thrust of his usual commentary. I don't see too much rock OR jazz OR country OR improv or blues or whatever. There's no doubting that he has done immeasurable work in terms of documenting a sadly underrepresented form of music (hey, the city of Chicago is finally recognizing the music's rich history this very month!) I just really can't really countenance him sneering down his nose at a genre he's basically abandoned. Perhaps Guided by Voices DO suck, maybe they don't (and as I say, I absolutely loved them for that brief burst of mid-90s lysergic energy), but I am just saying: I don't care to hear about it from a guy who basically turned his back on the form. At base, he just doesn't strike me as a well-rounded critic. Just a kind of subculture journalist, I guess. I don't know. If we have to pick British critics, give me Marcello Carlin any day of the week. Not a guy who owns the latest white label 12, just a guy who can write swimmingly great prose about a wide swath of music, and can recognize a decent musician when he hears one.

-- Monetizing Eyeballs (electrifyingmoj...), August 12th, 2004.

but Spencer why does it have to be "relevant" or "innovative". Aren't those ROCKIST concepts? (insert winky)

Surely there is new deep house stuff coming out all the time, right? Even if it isn't hip on ILM. It's like that one Reynolds article from a few years back (it might surprise some to hear that I read the man, but I do)(I just disagree with him vehemently about tons of stuff)(except for the awesomeness of the Doors and Jefferson Airplane of course) where he details the deep house scene in NYC, and basically poo-poos their little retro 'let's-recreate-the-paradise-garage' scene. I mean, where is the harm in it? People are going out having a good time, dancing, to this functional music, much of which is new and continues to be created. I have a buddy who is a deep house dj here in chicago -- who plays tons of the stuff with the dreaded *real instruments*, guitar solos, piano solos, the whole jazzy nine yards -- and while I don't LOVE that music, every time I've gone out to hear him spin I can enjoy myself and every one else seems to as well. It IS a total Yupster scene, there's no doubt about it. But at the same time, you know, it EXISTS. Whether the hipoisie care or not.

-- Stormy Davis (electrifyingmoj...), February 17th, 2005.

Woah, woah... I've nothing against PS. Yes, I have read a number of Needle Drops columns. I have not read the Wire piece, but I would love to; I stopped buying that magazine some years ago. Sherburne is indeed a very good writer. I never said he was not. I just felt he ought to rethink his position on Meltzer ... or at least read the guy first for crying out loud. Sherburne's also a bit of a dance fanaticist. For whatever reason, I'm less impressed by fanaticists. Perhaps it's because I myself could not possibly IMAGINE being that devoted to one genre. Sometimes I read Sherburne's writing [or even Reynolds --- although the latter got waaay cooler in my eyes recently by writing about Wishbone Ash. Wishbone fucking Ash! haha - you go Simon Reynolds! He hated it, but his curiousity lead him to it. See, nothing in Sherburne's writing allows me to imagine him "dropping" the "needle" on a copy of Argus] and my eyes glaze over.

I mean, I love dance music! but I'd rather shoot myself in the head than be so completely immersed in that world. I honestly can't imagine reaching the station of a Sherburne without having an innate curiousity about (much less ever having read) one of the guys who sort of helped to invent popular music criticism. How does that happen? Is that a necessary correlative to being a dance guy? That rock stuff just seems colossally unimportant? Is PS proud of that ignorance? Because see the thing is, what Matos accuses me of (not knowing what the fuck I'm talking about) is exactly what PS did on this thread - with his gratuitous post that accomplished nothing other than publically logging his disdain for a well-known writer whom he finally bothered googling, read a random piece, and dismissed.

I heart writers who can take a panoptical view, who are comfortable commenting on a wide range of music, who can tease out the connections and disconnections across genre lines. That's what I like and respect about my favorite writers. That includes you Matos, you big lug (your Voice microhouse piece was outstanding; your humility is endearing but totally unnecessary). It's why my two favorite music books of the last decade were Toop's Ocean of Sound and John Corbett's Extended Play. I think because I take a fundamentally materialist view of the world, I can't fathom not approaching music that way ... *sigh* god I can not wait for Sinker to finish his book.

Oh heck, I don't know. I think I'm gonna go reread those "fanaticism vs. dilettantism" threads. I don't have anything better to do tonight.

Regarding the "tampon" story, I don't think Meltzer writes that kind of stuff to impress anyone. He knows how loutish it looks. He knows it's a depressing, lonely way to move through the world, but he seemingly can't stop himself. That's always been the sad undercurrent anytime he's written about the various sordid situations he gets involved in. He's most assuredly unlike Tosches in that respect, in that the latter never allows that he's aware his behavior is in any way objectionable. I've never gotten the sense that Meltzer's particularly "proud" of his behavior. But he does write about it, and if you find it banal and uninteresting .. fair enough! I'm certainly not going to argue in favor of it, but it is just one part of the man.

This is a fun thread. I actually cannot believe that a thread on ILM about actual honest-to-gosh jazz music is neck-to-neck for posts with a thread that has "Simon Reynolds" and "dance music" in the heading. It's a frickin' miracle. Maybe there is hope for the world after all.

-- Stormy Davis (electrifyingmoj...

Who is hiding from anything??? I always say exactly what I mean, 100% of the time. No matter which sphere of ILX I happen to inhabit. Haven't you seen my drunken incoherent rants blasting your beloved hero Reynolds on ILM?? Though, it is indeed true that I like the Noise Board because it carries less of a chance of encountering British people and their AWFUL taste.

BTW, Ronan I've always liked you. For what it's worth. I think you are really funny. And a very good writer. And not overly British in your comportment, thank fucking christ. Unlike david "acid"

Scott Podsednik, All-Star, has the same ring as "Shakespeare in Love," Best Picture. Way to stuff those boxes, Sox bots!

Hafner wasn't even on the last-spot ballot? And Carlos Guillen gets crapped on once again. Thank God everyone forgets all this shit two days after the game.

one time my downstairs neighbors had a party which was attended by a bunch of non-campus inner city gangstas. there was one fire alarm at approx. 1 am, caused by smoking, during which i made friends with one of the gangstas (he was wearing a blue velour tracksuit and gold jewelry) and watched his buddies urinate on our building. at 5:30 am, we had another fire alarm caused by someone being pushed into the fire alarm thing and breaking the glass during a GANG FIGHT. when i came downstairs there was someone speeding away in a car. a few days later i had to describe my velour tracksuited friend to the police, sorry big guy. the moral of the story is that sometimes when your neighbors are loud, an adventure happens.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'm usually pretty tolerant but one apt building i was in had a load of undergrads who would blast music, and people would be (loudly) coming and going from their apartment and hanging out outside (climbing the walls of the apt building and throwing baseballs through people's windows) until ... 4 or 5 AM. that's fucking unreasonable. and yet i just sort politely ran downstairs in my pjs to ask them to keep it down. what a dork. eventually we called the cops.

There's a Klosterman profile of Kilmer in a current magazine issue - Details? Esquire? Kilmer invites Chuck out to his bison ranch.

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 02:46 (twenty years ago)

i was on a date with this girl one time and i made a crack about how this friend of mine, "probably needed to go to the crazy doctor" because of something and she got really offended, saying, "My brother goes to a psychiatrist because he's got issues, all right? He tried to kill himself once and he didn't mean it really, he only scratched his wrists a little, but I just don't joke about shit like that, so pardon me for not laughing."

Because then there would be no class system and society would collapse.

I read that thread, I don't think Jon has done or said anything particularly wrong. He's a decent person really. I know I blew up at DDB the other day, but I was a bit you know...

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:08 (twenty years ago)

their whole issue with jon is so moronic... it's like that thing where if your sister dies you should get all a's in school that year. why must the whole world walk on eggshells around you when there are terrible things happening to millions of people every day that don't get the same news coverage?

tehresa (tehresa), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:10 (twenty years ago)

there were a small handful of things on ilx that gave me some pause as far as online 'behavior' in the wake of the bombings, but jon's wasn't one of them, not sure why it's a big thing, since it was a subject that had nothing to do with the events!

Gear! (Ill Cajun Gunsmith) (Gear!), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:20 (twenty years ago)

I thought adam was from scotland?

no tech! (ex machina), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:21 (twenty years ago)

Well, I don't know. A girl whom we know is probably dead and so a lot of us are kind of bummed out about it. I can't help but think about it differently than the other "terrible things" not on the news - that is my home city and that bus blew up only a few meters from where I used to eat lunch every day. So it is different, for ME and others like me.

But YOU can do and say as you please, of course. I'm not going to be the one to dictate your behaviours or reactions. I just hope you'll understand if I seem a bit fragile, I would certainly accord you the same courtesy were I aware that you felt this way. All this said, I think Jon did in fact express condolences of a sort on ILE and everyone is overreacting.

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

(the "you" was meant to be general, not specific)

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:22 (twenty years ago)

(also not that Jon is somehow "expected" to express condolences by default or anything like that)

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:23 (twenty years ago)

god, I don't know. Anyway...

I'd still rather be in Tokyo (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 13 July 2005 03:26 (twenty years ago)

I didn't say anything in any of the threads because anything I don't have any special insight into the situation. Obviously, I feel that its very sad and I feel compassion for people dealing with this, but I would feel a little crass to presume that something so immediate would be wanted from a bunch of internet strangers I don't know very well.
