I like skinny puppy.

I saw C&C live, IIRC in 1985. It was fucking awesome, they showed a film while they played, which started off w/clips of cosey stripping & stuff, then it got more & more pr0n-oriented, & bits of it were actually pretty fucking hott, then it jump-cut to the eye slicing scene fromn "l'age d'or". Fucking hell! haha 1 audience = pwnt.

Howard Tate - Reaction
Dave Burrell - After Love
The Outsiders - C.Q.
Allman Brothers - Brothers and Sisters -- I've never owned this! can't believe how great "Jessica" is, it makes me so happy. God bless Richard Betts.
V/A - The Dawn Anthology
Lee Hazlewood - Complete MGM Recordings -- so fucking great, just amazing.
Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium -- listened recently for the first time in probably 5 years ... sounded amazing! way better than I remembered.
Truth and Janey - Erupts!
Neil Young - Prarie Wind
Cecil Gant comp on Flyright -- "I Wonder" is the greatest song of the 20th century
Keith Rowe / Oren Ambarchi / Robbie Avenaim - Honey Pie
Ahmad Jamal - The Legendary Okeh and Epic Recordings -- god, the original studio version of "Poinciana" is so freakin perfect and beautiful
Humble Pie - Live at the Whiskey A-go-go '69 -- holy smokes this is great, yet more proof why Ridley/Shirley are THE great undersung 70s rhythm section; this thing smokes Rockin' the Fillmore .. I even like the "Walk on Gilded Splinters" on this one!

and Pash will love this--

High Tide - s/t -- oh man, been totally rediscovering this album. Just fucking incredible.

i'm sorry if anyone takes offense, but i just "broke wind" and think it smells awful! butt's so poopy these days.

not that he's not perfectly within his rights to coast, mind ya.

xpost - yeah whatever, cutty.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:03 (nineteen years ago)

aw .. I like Prairie Wind quite a bit actually. Neil's a sweet old hippie.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:06 (nineteen years ago)

i'd have to hear it again but it seemed kinda phoned in.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 04:13 (nineteen years ago)

stormy, i've been listening to that high tide lately. it took me about 1 second to get over the faux morrison vocals, but it's heavy as shit.

i also LOVE that truth and janey cover. wish i had a wall sized poster of it. the music's good, eh?

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:20 (nineteen years ago)

oh wait, that's not the Truth and Janey album i was thinking about.

also, is that lee hazelwood the double cd comp? that's easily his best stuff, and i have almost everything he's done

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:21 (nineteen years ago)

Beach Boys - Surf's Up

Hurting (Hurting), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:23 (nineteen years ago)

you know, I never picked up on the Morrison thing until I read the liner notes where they were compared. yeah, I *get* it .. but I'm not entirely convinced the similarity was intentional. I like Morrison anyway.

yeah I've never heard the studio T&J. the cover IS awesome. I just got this live thing. Everyone (er, ok, Chuck and George) says the live one is better. but I am enjoying it so much I want to get the studio record. the live thing is great, they are playing to like 10 people (you can hear discern each individual hand clap) but they are totally on fire.

yeah, Lee is the double. so good. the sequence of "Summer Wine"/"I Move Around"/"Your Sweet Love"/"Sand" is incredible.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 05:58 (nineteen years ago)

seriously though there is that big long violin break on "Saneonymous" from High Tide which is so beautiful. I had this silly record for years and only listened to it a couple of times .. never really gave it the attention it deserved.

i just went out and bought the other one Sea Shanties which I had never heard and I definitely don't like it as much. less subtle, less interesting to my ears.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 06:02 (nineteen years ago)

the undertones - positive touch

count buffalos - emergency ( 70's japanese jazzrock/soul that i knew would be pretty bad but i bought it cuz it was part of toshiba's pro-use direct cutting series distributed by audio-technica. too bad my audio-technica needle is so old. still sounds spiffy though. i am a sucker for those japanese direct to disc vinyl rekkerds.)

byzantium - byzantium (chaz jankel rural prog from 72/73. not bad.)

nilsson - aerial ballet

elizabeth - elizabeth

the sir douglas band - texas tornado

rush - rush

milton nascimento - clube da esquina 2 (i love this record! i don't think i had ever heard an entire nascimento album before. great stuff. this is a double album. it even came with two big cloud stickers that i could stick on my car if i wanted to! i also got a groovy wayne shorter album with milton on it. i've been digging that too.)

wishbone ash - pigrimage

horseflies - human fly ( i forgot all about this album! i hadn't heard it since the 80's. "neo-primitive bug music". more bluegrass bands should have tried to sound like the feelies.)

Robert Lim's Janitor From Mars WFMU 2003 giveaway CDR -- fuck, I really should have gone to that Up-TIGHT show, shouldn't I? also, who the fuck are "Mandog"?? shitty name, amazing sounds. guess I could just call Rob and ask..

Robbie Dupree - "Steal Away" -- sounded great in Wendy's yesterday
fucking Converge show last night
Blind Blake - 'Complete Recorded Works 1'

also, illegal nurse with wound mp3 "compilation". many out of print albums for $15.00 infinitely better than paying some douchbag collector $40.00 for "Sylvie and Babs..." on amazon, via scratched CD.

Igor Adkins (Grodd), Friday, 11 November 2005 10:48 (nineteen years ago)

Up-Tight - 5 Psychedelic Pieces, this is great! Are LSD-March any good as well?
Love Live Life +1 - Love Will Make A Better You. It's pretty great, but they could've done without the American singer really. Every time he isn't singing I can sense him, flailing his hair around or "jamming" on non-mic'd bongos. Sometimes, a time and a place are no excuse.
Nini Rota - The Godfather soundtrack
Chicago - X. I got about 90 seconds into this one.
Next up after Up-Tight is the Vision Quest soundtrack, which I've been looking forward to ever since I picked it up in a charity shop yesterday for 69p.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 November 2005 17:22 (nineteen years ago)

JC, I'm not entirely sure exactly how much of the Moondog thing is previously unreleased. I haven't bored into it and compared tracks with the other officially released stuff. Hopefully this weekend when I have some time I can have a Moondog fest. I had to buy it though, the package looks great, cover repros, double-vinyl, etc. I think I would want it whether it has any rare stuff or not. it's Moondog, you know?

Up-Tight - 5 Psychedelic Pieces, this is great! Are LSD-March any good as well?

Yeah, they have a track on that comp I played as well. Totally great. Seeking a copy of their rare 1st one...

Rubber O Cement is Grux's (Caroliner) other band. Last time I saw them they were out of their element (NYC, 3/04, No Fun Fest) Tony Conrad was standing in front of me (and littlest ND Ian Johnson) and he looked at us and just scoffed and walked around me. I ROFLLE'd.

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Sunday, 13 November 2005 19:34 (nineteen years ago)

I saw them a year ago at No Fun Fest, they were pretty funny for a about 5 minutes. Ian Johnson was standing next to me and about 2 minutes into there set, this older man in front of us turns around and gives us this "WTF THIS SUCKS" scowl and then scoots between us to head downstairs. That man: Tony Conrad. ROFL.

Jdubz (ex machina), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:26 (nineteen years ago)

gear, what did you think of ithaca (besides the gorges)?

stockholm cindy is in your extended network (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 November 2005 21:40 (nineteen years ago)

i liked it for the three years i was there for school, but i don't know if i could live there. the music scene was pretty lousy, limited to mostly jam bands and horrible touring acts (the biggest concerts while i was there were blues traveler and rusted root), although I'm sure Johnny Down does some hometown shows here and there. pretty good cinema scene, though, between the arthouse theaters and Cornell Cinema. Tons of bars, but also a pretty lame white baseball cap-centric social scene. The record stores are (or were) horrible: Sam Goody at the mall, a couple of overpriced and limited-selection stores by Cornell, with the best being the used records they sold in the basement of Autumn Leaves, which is a bookstore on the commons.

But it's a generally liberal city, there's lots of wine-tasting to be done around the area, decent restaurants, the geography of the finger lakes region is really beautiful, and it's a safe place to live. i do think it's a better place to go to school than to live permanently, though.

gear (gear), Sunday, 13 November 2005 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

i just remember everything there being really expensive. like there wasn't much for non-rich kids to do except drink coffee. and if you venture out into the surrounding piss-poor towns (hello upstate!) there's even less to do if you're not an alcoholic or a methhead.

stockholm cindy is in your extended network (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 13 November 2005 22:28 (nineteen years ago)

i took a sociology class in which one of the main points of discussion was the division--economically--between Ithaca (which was definitely really rich and white) and the surrounding towns, even the ones just a few miles up either side of the lake. discus.

i had an apartment there my senior year, right over this pizza place called Gino's, near the commons. it wasn't that pricey, considering, but i was still probably paying too much.

A lot of the other Groundhogs albums are well worth getting, especialy the ones that came out on UA, w/the mcphee/cruikshank/pustelnik lineup. I think "Split" is the best one of these, and I can very vaugely remember them doing "cherry red" on top of the pops when I was a kid.

the best one overall is the double "hoggin' the stage" which came out in the early '80's. It's fucking rocking/heavy/noisy/relentless.

I've been listening to Black Sabbath quite a bit recently.

PIL - LIve In Tokyo

The Proletariat - Indifference

SNFU - If You Swear, You'll Catch No Fish

D.O.A. - True Strong & Free

PIL - This Is What You Want...This Is What You Get

(actually, two tapes i got i have heard. TSOL's Change Today and a Combat reissue of the first DRI album which I still have on vinyl. Now I can listen to it handily in the car. They had that even later TSOL album on tape too, but I didn't get it. When they were all hard rock.)

God, I still remember how sad I was when I heard that Brigade album when it came out. That Youth Brigade album was my fucking bible or something in 1984. New Wind by 7 Seconds didn't make me that sad.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:44 (nineteen years ago)

$4! It's a 1990 ecstatic peace pressing; it can't be particularly rare, can it?

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:45 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, that's the only pressing. Probably not "rare," but you probably don't see it around that much either.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:47 (nineteen years ago)

OOP RARE L@@K

Special Agent Dale Koopa (orion), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

It was rare for a long time, then I think they found a box of them or something and suddenly they were 5 bucks again. Tim's is right as that's the only pressing, it was never released during it's time. Von Lmo claims Rudolf Grey gave that tape to FE w/o talking to him, and that it sounds that way because Lmo smashed the tape with his boot in an effort to destroy it to spite Grey and Grey picked it up off the ground and gave it to Thurston or whomever 10 years later.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 17 November 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago)

Any of you guys ever see LMO or Grey around town?

Lou Rone, an old LMO crony (played guitar in Kongress), posted a comment the other day on Stigliano's blog. Chris had written something about not liking the word "hippie" and Rone said that his nickname used to be "Hippie" and something about how that was their time and place. He said, "LMO, Grey, Sumner - all flower power boys."

Groundhogs - Split
Metallica - ...And justice 4 ALL

walter kranz (walterkranz), Friday, 18 November 2005 01:58 (nineteen years ago)

I picked up CDs of "Split" and "Who will save the earth...the mighty groundhogs!" one the way home last night. Both absolutely great, though "who will..." is not quite as good as I remember ("earth is not room enough" from that is fantastic tho) great loose & heavy band, plus ken pustelnik was a great drummer & cool-looking guy too.

Also bought Guapo "black oni" which sounded ok on 1st listen. Murky-sounding instrumental prog rock, somewhat king crimsonish in places, maybe.

Also listened to the pink fairies and the move. Brit music 1970-1972 was so great.

how's that montgolfier bros?

i loved seventeen stars, but i never really got into the world is flat, and so far this reminds me more of the latter. much of the music is still nice (legrand/reilly/whatever it says on press kit), but i dont really like his vocals (strange, as the vocals were fine on the first lp)

Quite an Adventure has a spoken word section instead, an older man, talking about manchester in the 50s (afflecks palace, oldham st, all around there), though it strikes me as something of a hovis pastiche

Last Autumn's Dream is a great record. the first and thus far only Jade Warrior lp I've ever owned, but it's a fine listen. I bet it would sound pretty good right about now along with a little snifter of Hennessy.. I need to get more of their records.

I've always wondered about that Titanic record! I was obsessed with buying every old British hard rock / prog record reissued on the Repertoire label, but I never ran acrossed that one. And then I asked George Smith about it one time on ILM, and he said it was kind of like horn-prog or something. So my flame for that record kind of got extinguished. not that there is anything wrong with horn-prog .. I am of course a massive Chicago fan, Electric Flag fan, Sons of Champlin fan -- heck, I even have a couple Colosseum records -- I just had a bad feeling about that Titanic record after that...

been listenin to
Joyce -- s/t and Essential and live in concert last week
B.B. King -- Singin' the Blues / The Blues cd -- b.b.'s first two on one CD, freakin unstoppable, an old friend..
Grateful Dead -- Complete Fillmore Concerts box
The Embarassment - Blister Pop
Rita Lee -- Atras Do Porto Tem Uma Cidade -- this is fantastic. this record screams JBR
Ernie Andrews -- This is Ernie Andrews -- killer singer's first LP for Dot, just reissued on CD, incredible..

The Embarassment - Blister Pop

cutty (mcutt), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:23 (nineteen years ago)

stormy. i wouldn't necessarily say the Titanic is horn-prog. i actually don't hear any horns (oh wait, this song has some). the band is all norwegian except for the singer, who's british. the album is pretty varied. some hard rockin moments, some beatlesque songs, a horn track. but heavy drums throughout. kinda reminds me a bit of yr fave Uriah Heep (especially the super varied The Magician album). i like it way more than i thought i was gonna (picked it up just because my beatdigger friend has mentioned it a few times because of the breaks)

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:30 (nineteen years ago)

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:33 (nineteen years ago)

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:38 (nineteen years ago)

i really need that. apparently it's got a lot of "rock bottom" stuff, no?

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:39 (nineteen years ago)

they play "rock bottom" complete & other great things. it's not at all like the fusiony Matching Mole live stuff, though there are some great freak out moments, it's loose and precise at the same time. there's a great version of 'signed curtain' with a ludicrous mike oldfield solo & a picture of the whole band in wheelchairs

milton parker (Jon L), Monday, 28 November 2005 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

dusty/noisy 45s i got for $0.50 apiece:

loretta lynn - rated x/til the pain outwears the shame

no major scratches on any of these, just dirty & a little noisy. fine for my own pleasure.

ian m. johnson (laurah), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 03:48 (nineteen years ago)

On Wyatt:

I feared the Mole-ish line-up too..but i think everyone was just taken up in the crazy fact it was happening and instead just blasted on a "rock bottom" heavy set....the "i'm a believer" is a bit arena-ish (something in the performance recalls McCartney's "triping hte light fantastic" performances...don't ask why)...

the reynolds book made me pull out Fear of Music last night...and again, way better than i remembered..but perhaps only because it had been soo long. anybody have the byrne/eno record from back then...whatever its called? i'd assumed i'd hate it..but ive come around on eno in recent months.

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago)

i like eno in the right kind of doses. "My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts"... it's pretty good but maybe not what i'd expect...

come around on eno?!?!?! My Life in the Bush of Ghosts killed me when I was in high school, can't say I listen to it much these days. There's a really cool bootleg 12" out now however of a dance mix some guy made of a track from that on one side, and a new dance mix of I Zimbra from Fear on the other, I've played the I Zimbra mix a few times and I think it's great. I Zimbra was also sampled by Chicken Lips.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:13 (nineteen years ago)

I think coming around on Eno stems from a latent fear of Matching Mole.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, what the hell? eno and matching mole are amazing.

and this shit makes me smile

The Desert Fathers - The Spirituality
Deerhoof - The Runners Four
Sicbay - Suspicious Icons

I'm going to go buy a Lungfish record tomorrow! I've only heard them once, but my friend said they are all good and all the same, so I'll see whatever is cheap used.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 23:50 (nineteen years ago)

that desert fathers album is weird.

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:05 (nineteen years ago)

indeed. it's like shellac+kate bush+shudder to think...or something. actually it doesn't really sound like that. i dunno what it sounds like.

the skits seem to support intelligent design. I guess they are Xian.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 00:34 (nineteen years ago)

(pay no attention to the man behind the curtain)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 05:57 (nineteen years ago)

i had some stt record, but i don't buy them.

i maintain a severe aversion to prog (typically because of the guitar tones)...while i have come to see a variety of good in the near prog world, skepticism lingers. (the live marching mole i bought is mostly awful. but i do like the 1st record)

when i originally heard here come the warm jets and other eno solo stuff (outside of the ambient stuff) i didn't dig it. there was always a large supply of other things to get into, so it wasn't a big thing. But you convinced me to go out and buy Taking Tiger Mt..., Dan. I am better for it.

bb (bbrz), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 17:09 (nineteen years ago)

ten months pass...
love it when googling for work research leads me to noize brd threads.
someone tell me about crystalized movements "this wilderness comes" so i can better describe test press for ebay.

disappointing goth fest line-up (orion), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

"This Wideness Comes" is great! they are one of those bands that kept improving (and started pretty bad). 2nd to last album, with the final "Revelations From Pandemonium" being there best imnsho. what to say. Uh, it was their only album with major distribution? (recorded for a Caroline subsid). So probably a test pressing would be pretty rare! Rarer I guess than those "edition of 500" type things where copies keep "mysteriously" appearing all the time...
