what about splicing a cell headset cord in with a regular 1/8" cord, then plugging into the mic port on your computer?

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:53 (twenty years ago)

call your cellphone from another phone w/a louder speaker phone (or something w/a mic input) and sign into your answering machine from there. record. presto

jaxon (jaxon), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 22:55 (twenty years ago)

I can record it from my radio station's studio, if you like.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

what's the total runtime on the messages? like 5:36 of crazed goodness, or much longer?

kingfish kuribo's shoe (kingfish 2.0), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:46 (twenty years ago)

they go on forever

howell huser (chaki), Wednesday, 18 January 2006 23:50 (twenty years ago)

Damn. Like seventeen minutes.

I'd split them up, but hearing them all at once was much more effective.

it sounds like kate bush...but not as good. i like some of the wierd dissonance that comes into the piano parts sometimes, but i'm not a huge fan of her singing she seems flat on some stuff..

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:54 (twenty years ago)

she slurs her words too much in favor of faux-dramatic swoops. bad choice.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 19 January 2006 01:57 (twenty years ago)

I'm actually not as into the 'mentally ill' angle -- not that there isn't a huge WTF aspect to listening to her stuff, it's just that I've never heard melodies like these before anywhere, & I listen to a lot of music

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:21 (twenty years ago)

There's nothing to say it was confidential information, especially since she's just reiterating what she posts all across the internet, in terms of content. As to whether there's any special legal privacy for person-to-person phone messages -- not unless you're a doctor or a lawyer or a shrink, I think. The only sticky part is the phone number -- that could get someone into trouble. Just sayin.

elmo, patron saint of nausea (allocryptic), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:33 (twenty years ago)

not illegal. it would be illegal to record these msgs with her one the phone live without telling her. but vmails are totally fair game, his property. still kind of not cool to chop out her phone number tho.

ytmnds would rool

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:42 (twenty years ago)

i wouldve chopped or beeped the phone number! however she did post the number herself on ilm. nothing we can do now i suppose :(.

howell huser (chaki), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:46 (twenty years ago)

not a big deal, why would anyone want to call her + its likely in the phonebook anyway. i take our silence to mean that everyone is busy crafting YTMNDs?

brokeback titty sanskrit (sanskrit), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:52 (twenty years ago)

I NEED WEED

senseiDancer (sexyDancer), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:52 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I just d/led "Emu" and listened to it for the first time. I don't think she's "flat." The notes she's singing are just not tonally related to what's going on in the piano at all. She seems consistent with the notes, though. I find it very interesting.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:55 (twenty years ago)

Not illegal, might want to blur out the number tho...

She's posted her phone number on here about eight-hundred times already.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Thursday, 19 January 2006 02:56 (twenty years ago)

And "Roll." Thanks for YSI-ing these, you guys. She seems way more Meredith Monk than Tori Amos to me. Amazing.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:03 (twenty years ago)

I thought about blurring it, but I hate it when they do that on "COPS". Someone really going to call that garden nursery across the street from the drug bust?

And if this guy doesn't care, why should she.

I am seriously moved by those two songs. I had no idea ...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 19 January 2006 03:12 (twenty years ago)

Tim is right on. Though I do think she hits the notes flat sometimes, she hits them precisely the same amount flat every time -- she's not making any mistakes.

"it's sun"
http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=3427LWQLPIG5C1PYD4UDZU5F82

"el". a duet. listen to those harmonies. you really have to wonder what is going through that guy's head. at times I've been convinced that she's singing along to someone else's record, but I no longer think that.

This is the self-interview, which is a world unto itself (I think we've used five or six phrases from this on ILX ever since).

The genius of our times.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Thursday, 19 January 2006 05:24 (twenty years ago)

"thank you chris ott"

'emu' and 'it's sun' were the ILM favorites, so those were the only two people saved from her 'poems' page

I think the duet is a cover, it's interesting hearing her sing a straight harmony after her originals. you have to admit though, even here her high notes are kinda special, this is the subtle one that helps me get the others

milton parker (Jon L), Thursday, 19 January 2006 05:27 (twenty years ago)

I did have that self interview thing, but it was so batshit insane that I couldn't listen to it all the way through. It actually made me feel really bad, listening to it.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:16 (twenty years ago)

I listened to the first one, she rambles on as much irl as she does online. She has a pleasant, harmonious speaking voice. She needs mental help, really, doesn't she?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 January 2006 12:22 (twenty years ago)

WTF aspect to listening to her stuff, it's just that I've never heard melodies like these before anywhere, & I listen to a lot of music

"Emu" is, well, to be honest it's fucking terrible. However it isn't 1,000,000 miles removed from some stuff I have by the art bears or that "camera" TV opera that Dag Krause sang on. Tonally/harmonically very harsh. The other stuff I have by her is more like lo-fi kate bush/tori.
