dan do you have health insurance? if so your insurance probably has some sorta referral thing. if not, s.o.l, brofy.

(i don't have insurance so don't get steamed)

no healthinsurrance means no doctor.

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 02:16 (eighteen years ago) link

My doctor is a) in midtown and b) kind of kooky. She practices out of an accupuncture/pressure clinic and her offices are a little strange -- extremely quiet and filled with little water sculptures -- and when you say you have a sinus infection they're liable to ask you how your bowel movements have been, and tell you that there's too much "heat" in your upper body. I'm not sure why I still use her, to be honest, except that it's so amusing.

Wish I could help, I was going through this same thing the other day when I was seriously fucking ill and trying to score an appt with someone in Park Slope, but all I had to go on was the random list of doctors on my insurance's web site...everyone I called was rude and unhelpful, of course and wouldn't see me for like, um, three weeks or so. Eventually I gave up and sweated it out.

Hey, Dan, what's going on with the Ike stuff? I never heard back from you. I like the song "Loss"- do you have the parts?

Drew Daniel (Drew Daniel), Tuesday, 14 February 2006 03:43 (eighteen years ago) link

you can go to many doctors without health insurance. they just charge you lots of money (like 80/90 for a visit), but I do have and always have had and always will have health insurance, it's the number one thing my parents taught me. Also, I have some regular check-up type things do to bad thyroid and such, so I've always been covered knowing I'm often going to the doctor.

I take these simple pills every day and after 6 or whatever months am supposed to have thyroid levels checked. I often forget and call dr. who gives refill anyway, which I figure is fine because when I DO go, my levels haven't changed for like 5 years. So they ran out today and I've been busy and I call dr. and he's like "come get blood test tomorrow" and I'm like "my manager is gone for the day so I can't not come in tomorrow, can I get a weeks worth of pills and I'll come in later this week or whenever" and he says "I can't do anything for you without a blood test, so you need to do that goodbye" and hangs up on me. You're not supposed to notice when you miss a day or two but I swear I feel way weird, so I didn't want to wait a week days for pills. But he's been rude before and I was like fuck that hanging up on me. I went to the pharmacist and she gave me a few days worth and now I'm gonna find a new doctor, which I should've ages ago anyway. I may have to go a few days without pills, which will feel like getting sick and exhausted and tired and even weak but I'd do that as opposed to go back to his office.

I already have one tip, but am fielding others. I just prefer to hear from an actual person that so-and-so was nice and/or professional rather then whatever some healthcare website says.

Drew...I though you asked for Cherish 8? We just signed the contracts so now it's official. They're checking to see what they have in multi-track format for transfering, will be in touch.

so yeah, Acute Records is proud to reissue Ike Yard's 2 releases, the LP on Factory and the EP on Crepuscule, as well as some unreleased stuff, including a track recorded live when they opened up for New Order's first show in America, at the Ukranian National Home (on 2nd ave behind the Sly Fox, see concert film Taras Shevanko)

re: iChat, I've just been too busy. I was in mexico for a week, came back dj'd Dazzle Ships and Lit, had a 2 year anniversary, had to go to a funeral, helped John Allen out on a CD, trying just to catch up on emails for me is a mess, working 40/hrs on the mercedes and arbys ads, some other stuff, I'm just not a very disciplined or motivated person and I stretch myself way too thin. Just celebrated valentines day. Girlfriend bought me the Tom Snyder New Wave DVD and Lipstick Traces. I'm going to go celebrate my life be treating myself to the watching of a DVD, Herzog's Invincible, instead of doing any actual work.

I DO really need to do some serious work on the Acute website and my big plans to turn nyhappenings into a revolutionary website so I can get bought out for 25 million dollars.

but yeah, when I'm at my computer I don't always log onto ichat because I know I'll just get sucked into a long discussion about this or that. I know I owe you some music though cutty. Oh that's the other thing, fucking mp3 blogs. I can't take it anymore. There's so much shit being shared and discussed out there it's driving me nuts. I try to keep up with stuff and on top of that I subscribe to mp3 podcasts so like every day it's like "hey, here's 20 more songs to listen to!" And youtube. Jesus.

Too Gay for America (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:43 (eighteen years ago) link

the last time i went to the dentist was over ten years ago, and i didn't get the cavities i had then filled.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:45 (eighteen years ago) link

The reason I haven't been to a dentist for such a while is that my last dentist, a boisterous South African, used to tell off-color jokes to my mother and it made me resent dentistry in general as the last reserve of the horny and the damned.

Too Gay for America (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 22:46 (eighteen years ago) link

Laurel, did you really refer to Chinese medicine as "kooky?" 'Cause that's like what they use in China and people do get sick there. I find it to be a much more holistic way of looking at ailments. Very in depth, too. From my experience, western medicine is often stuck in treating symptoms rather than root causes of things.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Wednesday, 15 February 2006 23:55 (eighteen years ago) link

And possibly some not-so-good ones, too, but asking about your bowel movements, looking at your tongue, feeling your pulses are basic stuff (and, yeah, one of the ways they talk about things is in terms of heat and cold, etc.).

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:03 (eighteen years ago) link

Hahaha. It's more than just the holistic stuff, really, my doctor is honestly a little crazy: she can't keep a receptionist, for one thing, and she's always taking calls for, like, insurance coverage while in the exam room with me. Then there's the way she champions her Baptist church attendance and raises her hands, palms up, over her head while she describes how it feels to cast all her cares upon God. And at one visit she said to me "you could lose a little weight, why don't you cut the dairy?" and then she took blood samples and when she got my calcium results a while later, said "these numbers could be higher -- do you eat enough dairy?" So you see, I take salt with me.

Also, the last time I saw her it was because one of my eyes was swollen and weepy and I suspected pink eye, but she was more interested in de-clogging my sinuses and asking about my bowel movements. I was like, "I know colds are viral. I promise to go home and sweat it out with ginger tea. And eat fiber, yes I PROMISE. Can we PLEASE move on to the eye now, because I can't touch anyone as long as I have a contagious eye infection!"

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I also suspect she's right about a lot of things, which is why I keep going even though she's almost impossible to pin down to a particular diagnosis or prescription.

Laurel (Laurel), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:13 (eighteen years ago) link

Does she prescribe herbs?

Special Agent Gene Krupa (orion), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:27 (eighteen years ago) link

It has to do with every human. Which is not to say that the Chinese system would have a simple solution for your situation, Dan, or indeed that it would necessarily have any solution better than what you're currently doing.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 16 February 2006 00:49 (eighteen years ago) link

will read but, regardless of treating the "cause" of hyperthyroidism, western treatment of creating hypothyroidism instead has left me in a permantly thyroid-disabled state.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 16 February 2006 01:08 (eighteen years ago) link

dan, do you take synthroid? my dad had the same thing (and i'm probably at risk for it) and i always thought it was weird that the treatment was to just destroy your thyroid.

but, i like the word "synthroid."

bell labs (bell_labs), Thursday, 16 February 2006 18:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Yes I take synthroid. Synthetic Thyroid. Either it replaces treatment based on sheep thyroid hormone...or is a version of. I dunno. I'd rather not think I have sheep hormones coursing through my body. I had the overactive thyroid for years. When a new endocrinologist saw me after college he was suprised because as you say, anyone with over-active thyroid these days gets the radioactive treatment to stunt it, but most of the time it just kills it, making you go on synthroid, which is a much more stable thing. It's all very common, something like 1 in every 18 americans. Or maybe that's the statistic of how many men are freemasons. I forget.

If you are at risk maybe it can be prevented. Maybe taking care of yourself. Stress has something to do with it, apparently a stressfull situation can set it off. My mother's only kicked in just after her divoce. And I know this sounds melodromatic, but mine kicked in quickly after being dumped by my first girlfriend in 10th grade, who I had convinced myself was going to be with me forever. I mean, of course in retrospect it seems silly, but at the time, I was devasted. The hyperthyroidism kicked in and I lost 40 pounts over a few weeks.

Dan, do you know the guy with garbage records at the PS 321 flea market? I was bringing my taxes down to the post office saturday morning and he had loads of good, new stuff:

for $22:

Class Action - Weekend 12", Extra T's - E.T. Boogie 12", Tom Tom Club s/t, Brooklyn Express - Sixty-Nine b/w Change Position (Tee Scott mix) 12", Herbie Hancock - Grandmixer D.ST. Megamix b/w TFS + Earth Beat,
Maurice - This is Acid 12", U.T.F.O - Hanging Out b/w Roxanne, Roxanne, Grandmaster & Melle Mel - White Lines 12", New Edition - Candy Girl 12", Run D.M.C. - It's Like That/Sucker M.C.'s, The Jonzun Crew - Pack Jam 12", Taana Gardner - Heartbeat (Larry Levan Mix) 12",
Strafe - Set It Off 12"

it was like buying up one of pappawheelie's slsk folders.

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:32 (eighteen years ago) link

this mancuso set is weird. i think there was only one "disco" track in the whole set. now he's onto playing tripped out dub?

Jaxon von Jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

dunno, dunno, dunno, and uh, don't know.

this isn't working out well at all.

Where is PS321 flea market? Could be the guy from Iris records in Jersey City who always sells at flea marktets/street fairs and the like around manhattan and brooklyn.

I haven't seen the Moulton thing, I'm really broke right now and haven't bought any music in a long time except for 2 things I just got on ebay for "research" purposes.

As far as mancuso, even those loft sets are pretty eclectic, you could say in some ways disco is what is played by David Mancuso and not the other way around! Maybe not, but a lot of those records weren't disco then and are only considered disco because he played them.

I think that was the only thing by Strafe, though there were many mixes of that, and cover versions, and I think another Strafe? Walter Gibbons gets credit for mixing it. All that talk about Moulton and Levan comp CDs makes me wonder when the proper Walter Gibbons compilation will come out, or is there one?

Nice job scoring the Brooklyn Express, Mike. I got a beat up copy of it years ago and now just play the version they bootlegged on Ballroom because Cowley's I Feel Love is on the flipside, or something else good.

For those who dont't know it, Began Cekic getting Tee Scott to produce a slamming cover of Jimmy Bo Horne's Spank, where halfway through it this cool synth arpeggio comes in. You flip the record over and it starts with the synth, thus "69/change position". It also features the "Hey you" from Madness I guess?, some killer sirens, and the "It's Partytime" shout later used by Pal Joey...not sure if this is the first place or if it's from somewhere else, but it's a good way to get a party started, to play records where someone goes "It's Partytime".

but maybe you haven't been on the threads where I talk about Gene Clark or Slapp Happy or Del Shannon's psyche records or Terry Riley or Renegade Soundwave or any other personal obsessions of mine that don't fall within those very golden years...

i'm a bit tipsy so this is going to sound a bit left field. don't know why i'm reminiscicing about the dude, but do you remember an old gray haired white guy with a cane who invited himself to do these odd interpretative dances before the floor filled at certain clubs? omnipresent at body & soul + bang the party 3-4 years ago. he was equal parts mildly disturbing and endlessly fascinating.

am i making any sense?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 23:49 (eighteen years ago) link

there was a question buried in there somewhere. do you know his story and what was his deal was?

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Wednesday, 19 April 2006 23:53 (eighteen years ago) link

yes I remember and no I don't know the deal. Actually, I never went to Body and Soul, but was a regular at Bang the Party for a while, after they moved to Franks, but before they had DJs downstairs, then again when there were soul/r+b djs downstairs, but before they had hip-hop djs downstairs and a cover for the entire bar (instead of just upstairs).

There's another old guy, when I was djing at Sapphire a few weeks ago, where I hadn't been in ages, this guy comes in and starts tap-dancing. Nobody else in the room. And I remembered him, same thing, back from when Sapphire was a regular techno then disco party on wednesdays.

Then there's the guy, I'm sure you've all seen him, old with the close-cropped white hair who gets 2 amstel lights and dances around all jerky at the back of all the rock clubs to whatever band is playing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 20 April 2006 00:48 (eighteen years ago) link

that dude! he bends over at the waist, practically, and sticks his rump out and jerks around.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 20 April 2006 01:10 (eighteen years ago) link

i can see how the man i mentioned would be a target for derision, but i think he/they are what make this city great. i particularly remember a Bang the Party post-Franks (Opaline? somewhere in e village?) when this solo cute girl was nearby, one i would never hit on, except, theres cane dude going at it so instant conversation at the ready.

i guess i owe that guy one.

STRAIGHT FERN GULLY (jaxon), Thursday, 20 April 2006 05:36 (eighteen years ago) link

probably talking about how a dj compares the beats he hears coming from the monitor to the beats coming out his headphone when beat "matching"? Some DJs like the mixer feature known as "split cue" where it sends the program to one ear of the headphone and the cue to the other. I don't like that. I'd rather just hear a total mix of whatever percentage of each I want to hear, or better yet, cue in the headphones, program in a proper monitor. Or it means DJs aren't human and they come from a land where you have two brains and infinity eyes.

Dan, what's up

I need a new go-to store for $1-2 LPs. Not looking for 12" singles, hip-hop, house/dance or anything like that. Looking for classic rock, new wave, pop, country, r&b, jazz, etc. from the 70s-80s. Boz Scaggs, Chuck Mangione, Night Moves, Tubular Bells, et al. You know what I'm talking about.

Not a fan of Academy, Gimmie or Eat, to be honest--dollar bins are weak at these places. I love the PREX and Vintage Vinyl in NJ but I'm getting tired of hauling out there. How about that giant place in the Bronx that always gets mentioned, does that have this stuff? The place on Fulton downtown? The Thing? A-1? Places in LI maybe??

bump for spam!

hey, can I tell you about some parties?

a quick rundown would be:

1. Wed night...Dazzle Ships listening party at heathers with me, jeremy, matt and ryan
2. Fri night...Fixed at Don Hills with In Flagranti, Dave P. and me.

and now for the details:

1. Dazzle Ships return for another voyage, what is this, number 4? 5? Collect them all! Don't remember what Dazzle Ships is? It's where we play whatever records I feel like it, and you don't dance. Wait, that sounds like all my parties! No for real, early evening, low-key, great bar, nice people, great music. I bought a TON of AMAZING records this weekend, so you have to come check them out! Our guests this week are our great old friends Ryan Chowdhury of Mazing Vids (the one with no glasses) and Matt Radune of Oberlin College. Ryan used to join me at Transmission sometimes, we did 3 entire hours of Cabaret Voltaire once. That one was a winner. Expect more of the same. Matt bought all the great disco records in Texas. Expect to hear them all. Here's Ryan's email:

I'm going to play records at this neat bar called Heather's in the East Village tomorrow. The night is called Dazzle Ships. That's British for "cheap beer & spaced out music." Expect OMD, slowed-down disco, white funk, minimal synth, plain old minimalism, what they used to call "art rock," reggae songs where the city is too hot.

info:
"Dazzle Ships
w/hosts:
Dan Dna Selzer (Acute Records)
Tropical Jeremy Campbell
& guests:
Ryan Chowdhury
Matthew Red Hot Radune

8pm-1am at heathers
506 e13th at Avenue A
1/2 price well 'til 9, $2 tecate 'til 10

2. I'm djing at Don Hills for the first time ever! It's where Misshapes takes place on saturdays. Friday's has alternating great parties like Nite Time and Fixed, which is the old party that used to rock the Tribecca Grand on saturdays. Dave P. you know from RVNG, who put out that awesome Crazy Rhythms mix and the new Tim Sweeney edits 12". You also know him from DJing at Motherfucker and his legendary party in the 6th borough, Making Time. I haven't dj'd with him since we destroyed Table 50. Literally, they don't even call it that any more! There's also an awesome live band who should be cool, and best of all, it's FREE so long as you RSVP to getrad@igetrvng.com

So c'mon people...this is your chance to come to a seedy nightclub and dance. It may even be dark enough that nobody will recognize you and your stupid dancing! I'm going to play a lot of music, I'll play some of your favorite hits, but I'm going to play some really loud techno if I can. And some loud disco. Some loud New Wave. Some of the crazy records I bought last weekend, really loud. I learned the secret to exciting DJing. Play LOUD. Thanks to Scott Z. for that, you know what I mean if you came to Jeremy's bday party last week. What did you say? I can't hear you, it was so LOUD! I'd put on the most boring song and mix it really poorly and it still sounded like a life-changing moment. Know why? It was so LOUD! Anyway see you at these parties, friends. Please spread the word.

dear daniel,

dear jaxon, i'm not dan, but i myself find this to be true, just fyi. -mark

s1ocki (slutsky), Wednesday, 31 May 2006 17:31 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know anyone named Michael Jackson or R. Kelley, so I have no idea what yr talking about but....

YES. Particularly in a city as saturated with DJs as New York, first rule is, it isn't usually about the music, it's about your friends. Personally, I found that when I was 26 and going out every night and staying up till 4 every night and knew everybody in NYC, more people came to my parties. Now that I'm 31 and I stay home every night and my friends are all entering their mid-life crises, I find it harder to drum up interest.

I mean, there's simple things you can do, just go out, say hello, remind people you exist. And if you go to their parties, often they'll come to yours. It's a you scratch my record, I'll scratch yours kind of situation.

And I don't think all that is an inherently bad thing, I think, personally, I'm a very good example of someone who's a good social networker and self-marketer who's been able to do that without coming across as sleazy or shallow or whatever. I had a long discussion with someone about some younger DJ who was a real problem child and our basic conclusion was that...being shitty, you can go really far really fast, but in the end it ain't like you're making friends. After a while you know who you can trust anyway.

But as far as the music is concerned...in some cases it matters, but often not. I'm sure there's some mathematical chart you can configure. There are plenty of successfull parties where the music and djing is just crap, or just barely adequate, but it's a place to be, it's a scene, the DJs have the right friends or whatever it takes. As far as the good parties, I believe even with those there's a quality of building up a crowd and having the right friends. Does No Ordinary Monkey or Rub-N-Tug have bigger mailing lists then I do? Probably not, but their mailing lists are filled with people who are really into going out at 4 in the morning to dance to disco, whereas my mailing list is filled with people into going to their computer at 4 in the morning to discuss disco on the internet. That's a key difference there, folks!

There's so many other issues, like frequency. When I started, all my friends came out and I had lots of support, but anyone who djs or is in a band knows that once you've been doing it enough, after a while the friends start to stay home. Maybe you get a few people who you don't know but if there's not enough people, you know that and everything else that can or can't make a party successfull.

Tell you this, almost every time I dj I have total strangers coming up to me complimenting me and asking where I dj. I get their names for mailing lists, I give them business cards. These people are so psyched, they love the music and want MORE MORE MORE....and I almost never see them again. You really just need to get that crowd who represents some aspect of NIGHTLIFE as opposed to people who may occasionally go out on a friday and be into what I'm playing. Maybe you're misshapes and it's a younger crowd in school and this is their scene or you're Rub-n-tug or A Touch Of Class and know all these older fashioned out night-life denizens, they'll come out. I have no doubt a LOT of people like what I play and have had good times when I've DJ'd, but I can't get them to all come out at the same time to every party I do.

And it helps to be part of the scene, and, despite Tricia's article in the voice this week, I think really PARTYING keeps you down with the other djs, gets you gigs and such.

There's other issues regarding the relative popularity of the music you play, or the perceived popularity. I know i've had some people who think I only play weird old stuff and some who think I only play really big cheesy hits. They're both right. But some people def play stuff that is just more popular then others. I'll never get around how people perceive what I do, some people are like "you're an indie-rock dj" or "you only play italo" or whatever, when I try to be really fun and eclectic. Oh well.

no problem. I've never heard the 4th, but the first 2 albums are amazing as well, and totally different from the Correct Use of Soap. Real Life, the first is really punky, but one of the first statements of post-punk...artier, more intense etc. The follow-up, Secondhand Daylight, is super dour, intense, driving, a bit Joy Division-y. Some synths and horns, but not as poppy or elegantly produced as Correct Use of Soap. It probably contains my fave Magazine son, Rhythm of Cruelty and Believe That I Understand, the chorus to which is, "Another sick monkey with a saintly face" according to some lyrics website. I always thought it was "sailor's face", which is way creepier.

Trying to avoid stuff on New World o' Sound or Fusetron in case they come by! No really, like Ascension and Doo Rag. My rule is, to get decent record for next to nothing, you have to take a crappy one. Maybe.

Doo Rag was great live, though their record's sucked.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Sunday, 18 June 2006 07:08 (eighteen years ago) link

The Doo Rag record went to my friend who helped me move, mostly because his friend's friend was in the band. I just remember them being a pretty weird band for the time. Like now, it wouldn't be so suprising, but then?

DJing is stupid. But we do it. You know why? Because....

a) Sometimes the sound is good and you get to play your records at incredibly loud volumes

b) Sometimes everyone has the best time in their life and with a flick of the switch or the turn of a knob, 100s, dozens, or just a few people scream at the top of their lungs because they've never had such fun and you feel so powerful to cause this reaction even though all you did was turn up the volume.

c) Sometimes girls you've never seen before walk up to you and say nice things.

That about sums it up.

i could play 'white soul' (whatever that is) all night and get away with it on a yuppie booze cruise. plus, open water...mmmm.

what is 'respectable'?

noise dude loft spaces (i'm sure) and house parties are often the best places, but a yuppie booze cruise? that'd be totally fucking awesome! i guess that i think mainly of aging yuppies, though, and one could just play tons of soul and funk and disco and they'd dig it, especially if the bar was stacked.

i was at Bleecker Boob's today and saw those megamixed acid house records you talked about on some thread.

what use are they? i can see how radio DJs could have used them but it doesnt seem like collectors would go for them and i dont see how a live DJ could pass off someone elses mix as their own.

jinx hijinks (sanskrit), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Which ones, there's millions of all different genres for different purposes. You can go all the way back to Stars on 45, but in the dance context, I think some of it was either aimed at lazy club owners/djs, or just to show off. Stuff like Disconet year-end medleys certainly weren't created for the home market. But there are plenty of comps that were, like "recreate the exciting sound of the club in you home" or whatever. I mean, people still buy mix CDs/tapes all the time. Whenever there's a brooklyn street fair I always check to see what's on the CD mixes they sell at the stands, that's for the car, no doubt.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 20 June 2006 23:28 (eighteen years ago) link

daerest dan,

in your experience, will a crowd of indie kids who are, let's say, less educated in the ways of the dahnce musics be more forgiving of crap mixing? I figure if the tunes are good enough I miiiiight be able to get away with it on saturday night with no practice. am I deluding myself?

u feel me,

indie disco dancer, sweet romancer (haitch), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 03:38 (eighteen years ago) link

indie kids don't notice bad mixing. they don't even know what mixing is. they just want to hear their favorite songs.

those songs are Common People by Pulp, Since You've Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson, and that's it.

though good mixing always makes it easier to keep people dancing.

in that ongoing and idiotic debate about beatmatching, people seem to forget that it just makes the transition less jarring. It's really not complicated. But it's not like you're gonna fool them into dancing to something they don't like. If you've got that crowd who only wants to hear what they know and love, it doesn't matter how smoothly you mix Blue Monday into soon as they realize it ain't Blue Monday, it's back to the seats for them.

But if you really trainwreck, you can ruin the party for anyone who wants a little more then a jukebox, I mean I've been dancing to my favorite song and it trainwrecks into another favorite song and been forced to stop dancing, because the beats are all fucked, you know?

If you can't beatmatch, DON'T play both songs at the same time, quickly fade from one to another. Or quickly fade the first one out then immediately start the next one. Or even better, have the second record cued up and spinning but held in place, at a good moment on the first record, just hit the stop button. Wait 1 second. Let go of second record.

dan, your thoughts on dj'ing with real vinyl vs. dj'ing with Traktor or other computer-based software?

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 11:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I played w/ Traktor once at home, it was pretty neat I guess. For me though, all that matters is that you can cue up a song, adjust the temp, and continue to adjust. With vinyl, for me this means scratching on a downbeat or something, letting go at the right time and pushing and pulling the record to adjust the tempo. I can do that with vinyl or with good CDJs like the Pioneer 800 or 1000, but cheaper CD players, where you pause it and it loops the note and you find the beat, I just hate. Likewise, I'm not sure how that works on traktor. Can you grab a playing song to pause it and let go at the right time? I can't imagine having the amoung of control i'd want with a trakpad. I had trackpads. I remember there being nudge buttons, equivalent to the pushing and pulling of a record, that's cool, and you just have to get used to it, I guess.

Telling you the tempo and locking it in isn't relevant, just try DJing with songs that have live drummers that speed up and slow down during the song. Only Ableton Live I think can handle that.

Are you talking about something where Traktor has different outputs so you can use the real mixer, or mixing in the computer? I don't think I'd be a big fan of mixing in the computer. So much of djing involves too many things to have to move 1 mouse pointer around. With you're left hand your manual speeding up or slowing down a turntable while with your right hand you're fading one up and the other down, that's 3 functions at once, how do you do that in the computer?

I'm ready to switch to CDJs...they have the feel of vinyl, which I like, but CDs don't weigh as much as records.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 14:04 (eighteen years ago) link

damn. uh... i guess i was wondering more about how receptive an audience is to computer-based vs. vinyl-based dj'ing. i'm not a dj myself, and i have no answers for any of YOUR questions. i've only played around in Traktor a few times, but my friend dj's a lot with just a laptop (using Traktor).

killy (baby lenin pin), Wednesday, 21 June 2006 14:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I think any audience who cares is a little silly. It's funny people always come up to you and are like "wow, you're still playing records!".

btw, ask Dan Selzer where he is now and why he's not posting to the internet? He's now in manhattan at his girlfriend's friend's house using the computer. A very sizeable portion of Queens, including the area I moved to just a few weeks ago, has been out of power for several days now. This is so important that NY1 has finally covered it. Thousands and thousands of people without electricity...we don't even have hot water for some reason, and the rest of the city goes about it's business. Not true, parts of brooklyn were out and browning out yesterday as well. Anyway, in Queens, Con Ed is going HOUSE to HOUSE to find out where the electricity is out! And they're distributing ice at various parts of Queens. Thanks for the ice, Con Ed! This happened the last time there was a heat wave, but then I was living in brooklyn, I remember saying "Thank god I don't live in queens!".

bell labs (bell_labs), Friday, 21 July 2006 16:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I wrote a long response to this friday but it got lost due to poxy fules. I'll sum it up:

renard, where in queens are you?

lindsay, I had written that I thought they were working eastward, hooking up the rich(er) whiter LIC/astoria first, but today i ran into an old coworker who lives in astoria and he's still fucked.

my building is mostly fixed except for the elevator, which means electricity is still low, so I'm not gonna turn on the AC. Luckily it's not 105 degrees anymore.

I think I wrote some more about realizing I'm not that far from astoria and asking where the cool places in astoria are.

Anyway, since friday, I've gone to the berkshires, come back, and finally, due to enough complaining, the power outage has made the news.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Monday, 24 July 2006 02:30 (eighteen years ago) link

i'm up near the last stop on the N/W in astoria

the crazy thing is everything I wrote friday still stands

my apt. on 35th street is fine, everything else in the neighborhood is still mega fucked ... most stuff below 33rd seems to be out, and one ave. over from me on Ditmars everything is still out up past 36th and beyond

regular neighborhood features: blackened manholes pouring out steam that smells like plastic, Con-Ed trucks on every corner, cops on every major corner with pink flares directing traffic b/c of no stoplights working

I was over in Woodside last night and it was even worse .... my friends in Sunnyside have enough juice to run a few lightbulbs but their fridge still isn't working

tried to go out to dinner tonight (restaurant was closed, no power) and on the way back walked past a bakery with a sign in the window: "Closed, No Power, Con-Ed YOU SUCK"

(i'll try to get to "cool places in Astoria" in another message ... )

dmr (Renard), Monday, 24 July 2006 04:07 (eighteen years ago) link

i got out of town this weekend too (though, friday night out of jfk wasn't too much fun either) and when i came back last night there was some power...not enough to run my computer or ac, but i didn't need ac last night anyways. but yeah - i'm glad it's finally made the news, i was sick of getting the "what, really? no power since tuesday?" looks of disbelief/doubt from my upper east side dwelling co-workers.

i'm worried that they are only patching things up though, and that this is all going to happen again in like a week.

anyways, i'd like to know if there are any cool places in astoria too!! i've found lots of nice & cheap places to eat, but i haven't found any fun bars.

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Monday, 24 July 2006 15:05 (eighteen years ago) link

they're not working eastward, it sounds like northern astoria is as fucked as the worse, I do know the first thing they fixed was LIC/court square/CITIBANK BUILDING area. I just got back from moving my car, which took me an hour to find a spot. Lots of coned guys everywhere, finally traffic cops on the street...for a week there was nothing, and I mean, major intersections leaving drivers to decide if they wanted to stop and let people through! I went to northern blvd and ate at...boston market. I figured the chains/fast food places will be the most dependable, I'm not about to get food from some local joint, like the unbelievably tasty Torta sandwhich I had before the outage at El Jarro in sunnyside. Pickled jalepenos, mmmmmmmmmmm........

My building has electricity, but still no elevator. Most of this area looks like it's back online and I hear people using AC. Someone was using the washing machines downstairs, which I desparately need to use. But I'm trying to conserve...not out of some "we all must pitch in" bullshit, but I'm seriously afraid that if I plug in the AC, or put in a load in the wash, Queens will black out.

I will be making a claim to coned for spoiled food...it seems like they're loosening up the regulations, they should really just give everyone in Queens a 150 dollar credit.

All I know about Astoria is the museum of the moving image, which I used to come to all the time anyway, the bohemian garden, Kebab Cafe on Steinway, which is fantastic, and I've recently been told about Cup, but haven't been yet.

kebab cafe is best. the cup is kind of eh, for brunch anyways, their coffee isn't very good. better brunch in astoria is at le sans souci, featuring omlettes and buckwheat crepes the size of your head and tasty fries, but sadly NOT serving bloody marys :( almost perfect.

jj's for sushi, and also the place the just opened on steinway around broadway or 31st ave (ginsu? or something, it's very shiny and new looking) is actually pretty good.

Sal Kris & Charlie Deli aka Sandwich King - cheap/huge/delicious Italian subs on 23rd Ave
JJ's is okay, I like Watawa better, haven't tried Ginsu yet
Fatty's Cafe - newish place that just added an outdoor patio, 25th & Ditmars, great mojitos, food is hit or miss
Elias Corner - kinda pricey but really good Greek whole fish place near the beer garden

Sparrow = sit in near pitch dark drinking $6 beers ... at least the music is usually halfway decent (Nick Cave, Modern Lovers, etc.)
Irish Rover = you can probably guess

bell labs (bell_labs), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 13:34 (eighteen years ago) link

one of the best places is a sort of trendy mexican-y place called La Flor on Roosevelt and 53rd.

Donovan's Pub near the intersection of Roosevelt and Woodside is Time Out's Best Hamburger in NY joint. To be honest, I thought it was great, totally solid hamburger in a weird irish pub, but don't know if i'd say BEST.

On 61st st just off roosevelt is another thai place, Khao Homm, which is more conventional then Shri Pra Phai, but probably the best Thai place of that style Thai i've ever had.

There's an Irish grocery with takeout food in the back called Tommy Maloneys though they're repainting the sign so maybe it's gonna be called something else, on 58th or 59th between woodside ave and roosevelt, they have stuff like Steak and Mushroom Pies. There's a bigger version of the same down in sunnyside, 41st off Queens Blvd called Butcher Block, a HUGE irish grocer. I haven't eaten enough in Sunnyside, but El Jarro on 48th Ave and 45th st on the south side of sunnyside was great, that's where I got the aforementioned torta.

El Sitio on Roosevelt in the high 60s was some of the best cuban food I've ever had.

Really, we've only been here a little bit and there's just too much food to try between Sunnyside, Woodside and Jackson Heights. I drove down Roosevelt all the way through Forest Hills and it's just restaraunt after restaraunt.

otherwise...caravan chicken on broadway is genius...as is chicken festivale on ditmars. on of my favorite places out there is bahlk kabob..the afghan place on 31st...round the corner from the beer garden. (get the pumpkin!) i so miss the garden, but all reports make it sound far from anyplace i could stand to be anymore.

hell, i miss astoria.

ill ask a friend who lives on broadway and is a massive food person to do a quick must go list of astoria/lic/sunnyside ... theres so much, its can be pretty hard.

good to hear ... been curious to check it out but sometimes I need to hear someone vouch for a place before I take the plunge ...

La Flor on Roosevelt and 53rd.

love it, I've had both dinner and breakfast there and both were great.

there is a restaurant that opened recently in Woodside called Spicy Nina (sp?) that was billed to me as "the Indian Sripraphai" but I haven't tried it yet

my favorite restaurant in Jax Heights is probably Pio Pio (Northern Blvd in the mid 80s), you don't even look at the menu, just count up how many people you have with you and decide how many El Matador Combos you want. It's a whole roast chicken, salcipappas, plantains, salad, and some other shit for like $24!! definitely feeds three people ... four if you're not all starving.

pio-pio

my co-worker is all about that place...i have tyo go sometime...theres on in the 90's on the east side too

totally vouch for balkh.

you're thinking of spicy mina, on broadway in the mid 60's. IT IS SO SO GOOD. mina special dal fry, samosa chat, shrimp sag, actually everything is great.

I have seen the video for Stop Bajon, I think I even hosted it for a while!

anyway, back to queens...

I'd heard of Spicy Mina but read all these debates about them changing location and Mina leaving to work at a rest. in manhattan and it suffering. The only indian I've had in Woodside was Masala on 61st which was just ok. Seriously though, the best indian food I've ever had was a total standard joint, Joy on Flatbush avenue in Park Slope/Prospect Heights area, the Chicken Tikka was the MOISTEST most DELICIOUSNESS I've ever experianced.

Haven't been back to Punjabi 5 Star in years and looking for recomendations in jackson heights. We hit an indian-chinese kebab king place that had manchurian/general tso's style crispy fried baby corn and very good kebabs.

I just can't justify most of Brooklyn to anyone. We were looking at Kensington/Ditmas Park area if my girlfriend ended up at Brooklyn College grad school, and in the end I'm glad we're in Queens, that area is as far from the city, and further from williamsburg then where I am now, and the amenities out there are totally lacking compared to here. Meanwhile everyone moves to Bushwick and now Bed-Stuy...if you're going to be so far out in brooklyn and only on the J train, why not move to Queens? I walk around here and everyone is so friendly and it's so quiet at night...

bb (bbrz), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 18:22 (eighteen years ago) link

did mina leave?! she was still there the last time i ate there, about a month ago, and came out and said hi and everything. that's so sad if it's true.

my only big problem in queens is that most of my friends are still in brooklyn, and it's especially hard to see people in south brooklyn; i even had to quit my band b/c getting to park slope 3 times a week for practice was just too much. i was living in red hook before and i miss it there SO MUCH sometimes, especially the bars, and there's just nothing like that in queens. but meanwhile, i keep hearing about people in s. brooklyn getting crazy $400 rent increases, so maybe they'll end up here eventually.

bell labs (bell_labs), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 18:37 (eighteen years ago) link

brooklyn's just getting so expensive and so crowded so fast, and when all you have to look forward to is waterfront parks and skyscrapers for yuppies, loft condos, basketball stadiums and Gehry skyscrapers....and amidst all of this there's just this tension that I totally don't find in Queens.

I mean, Red Hook is getting ridiculous, The Good Fork and 360 are great, but notice who's going there? Pretty soon the only people who will be living in Red Hook will be yuppies with cars, the poor artists will be priced out and the middle class hipsters who gentrify the likes of Park Slope/Williamsburg etc still won't move there because it's too inconvenient transportation-wise.

One thing is that I have access to a car. I went to a little part in kensington last night and it was a 30 minute drive, which wasn't so bad. With no traffic we can zoom over to williamsburg in 5 minutes.

but speaking of red hook...pioneer BBQ was awesome!

Anyway, they need to get the G in fucking order and they need it to run far up into Queens ALL THE TIME.

when all you have to look forward to is waterfront parks and skyscrapers for yuppies, loft condos, basketball stadiums and Gehry skyscrapers....

I hear ya, but it's coming to Queens eventually, they're building a luxury tower four blocks from the Queensbridge projects! Plus all that waterfront stuff in the LIC ... Jackson Heights prices are going up ...

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:40 (eighteen years ago) link

I def. gave up on LIC, we looked there and it was like, fuck this! There's like 4, Park Slope style restaraunts filled with midtown-working yuppies from the high-rise condos...with more condos on the way. The apts we saw were incredibly expensive and mostly terrible.

Jackson Heights however probably deserves it, the stuff we saw there was gorgeous. At the time I'd only really seen Roosevelt Ave and had a limited idea of the commercial areas, only a few weeks ago did I drive back on 37th (or 39th) then a few days later notice that even Northern Blvd in Jackson Heights is nice and filled with cool stuff (unlike here where it's filled with car dealerships and a diner called the Orange Hut, anyone been?)

Prices may be going up, but you can get a HUGE, like almost 1,000 square feet, 2 bedroom apt in an elevator building, all pre-war with details and shit, gardens on the interior etc, for 1400 or whatever, that's hard to beat. I just feel Jackson Heights is a bit further out. Woodside has the express 7 and the LIRR, which is nice, and lately although it's a bit more of a trek, we realize we can walk to the Northern Blvd V/R stop.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:56 (eighteen years ago) link

its funny how we're all in the same boat but don't look out for each other.

it seems Willamsburg/Bushwick people could care less about the Nets stadium monstrosity. i even caught myself snickering when i noticed all the high rises going up around McCarren Park. i should feel guilty about that.

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 19:57 (eighteen years ago) link

Jackson Heights is further out but it's like the transportation hub of all Queens, that 74th St stop has every train. My wife and I may end up there if we can't swing Fort Greene (hi dere Nets stadium monstrosity). We've been in Astoria three years and are looking around.

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 20:19 (eighteen years ago) link

i think i would whole-heartedly love living in queens if i were either a few years older (or acted my age) and lived with a SO or had tons of friends in the area... not having people around all the time means i don't go out to restaurants in the area as much as i should, and DO go out to bars NOT in the area MORE than i should...

other than that and the power outages and the fact that the R train tunnel gets flooded everytime it rains, it's great.

bell labs (bell_labs), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 20:31 (eighteen years ago) link

oh yeah, as I said, take away the girlfriend and her car and I'm back in brooklyn! Fact is there are TONS of "likeminded people in their 20s/30s" (read: hipsters) in Queens, they just don't have such obvious places to congregate. One issue is that the hipsters in queens are often older/attached and less interested in that kind of thing, and/or, being the type of hipsters who'd move to queens, they feel somehow diametrically opposed to the idea of such a thing. But any of these neighborhoods could use a small bar/lounge/cafe that's a bit more hipster friendly, c'mon, I'm not saying gentrify the whole borough, just one little joint. I don't care as much, but it's nice being able meet at a cool bar. I hear some of the Irish bars around here are nice but I'm intimidated...and not necessarily totally into that aesthethic all the time. 1 bar and 1 french bistro, that's all I ask!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 20:39 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah, i don't know where all these "hipsters in astoria" are, certainly not around me, which i thought would be refreshing but now i kind of miss them. seriously, 1 bar! 1 daddy's or lillie's or something.

bell labs (bell_labs), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:02 (eighteen years ago) link

hipster looking people have increased greatly in my neighborhood in the last three years (and the number of sushi joints has quadrupled)

still no bar, though. shitty sports bars and generic Irish bars.

Tupelo used to fill the hipster-bar role pretty well, but for some reason they closed it and reopened in a different area as the Sparrow, which just ain't as good. (no DJ booth, for one thing)

dmr (Renard), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:12 (eighteen years ago) link

ahhh..djing. Sometimes I wonder if I shouldn't find some queer latino club in jackson heights to start a menergetic freestyle party!

We see hipsters every now and again in sunnyside, woodside and jackson heights. I've known lots of hipsters who've lived in queens at times, but as I mentioned, they're usually in a sort of "we're hiding out in queens" mode and probably wouldn't go to a hipster bar if it existed...or would they!?!?!?!

I think Lillies is closed now, no?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Lillies is a goner, as of two months ago. I didn't go very often, part of its appeal was its being so out of the way. A friend had a bday there last year and they had this amazing free BBQ on a Sunday night, I think half the young people in the area came out for it. At least the great nautical bar Sunny's is still around (i hope).

fongoloid sangfroid (sanskrit), Tuesday, 25 July 2006 23:09 (eighteen years ago) link

and, freestyle party in jackson heights?

Sunny's was around when I went a month or so ago. Lillies was truly a cool find though, just design-wise, it was so beautiful, this ancient bar (almost) totally preserved.

cool.

I now own 2 sets of cartridges. The Ortofon Nightclubs I just keep on my turntables at home and never take them off, so I don't have to fuss with them. The Electros I have as my travelling pair and they usually connect better then the Nightclubs, and they're a bit more robust and louder then the Nightclubs, definately better for travelling. Turntablelab recommended I buy the Electros over the qberts or whatever they're called, which are way more expensive.

Wait, WTF Lindsay...we sent in a claim for 149$ weeks ago and haven't gotten anything. Maybe they're doing Astoria first.

It's a whole branding/interface/website kind of thing. No programming necessary, as I have a pro-grammer. This could be lucrative and could be cool. Wondering if any of you have friends who are designers. Please send me any suggestions, links etc, and spread the word.

there is a giant thrift store near the Astoria Blvd N stop (under the highway overpass) but it kinda sucks ass. over priced and every interesting looking record turns out to be an empty sleeve.

dmr, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:17 (seventeen years ago) link

I've posted this about 8 times in the last half hour:

Hey-

For about 6 years the Acute Records website was just a single white page with a bit of text and the phrase "new site soon" up top. Finally, about a year ago, it had a "design", some sort of Acute house style, but was still just a tease. Then, after much work and with a great deal of help from Rob from Catsup Plate, we got a real website up there. But I didn't officially "announce" it because I was waiting to start the Acute blog. So after a few more months, and with a great deal of help from Max of artificeeternity.com, we finally set up the blog. And I still didn't say anything. I had posted an initial intro post, but wanted to wait until there was a more substantial post. Well now there is, so I'm here to tell you about it.

Consider the Acute Records website officially "launched"! You can see it here:
http://acuterecords.com

And feel free to check out the Acute Records Blog here:
http://acuterecords.com/blog/

Why a blog? Why not. You can read all about it in the first post, but basically the blog will be an outlet for the discussion of music, the stuff we're releasing, the stuff we want to release, the stuff we wished we released. Old music, new music, tours, radio, interviews etc. Like the original Acute geocities website, it'll mostly just be the rants of a fan, nothing too authoritative or academic. Hopefully it will be fun, maybe a bit informative and maybe a bit funny at times.

My goal is to have at least one post a week because I want to make sure you come back and keep checking it...I want to be in your RSS reader, I want to be in your blogroll. Most importantly, I want you to comment and take part. The first real post is up, an extensive and excessive summation of my appearance on the Beats in Space radio show. Don't worry, I'll probably never post anything that long again.

So please come check it out and let me know what you think. We're still working the kinks out but I'm pretty psyched about it. And look for the Fire Engines CD Hungry Beat on October 2nd and for news beyond that...well you'll have to join the mailing list and keep checking the blog!

Thanks,

Dan

Don't worry, I'll probably never post anything that long again.

oh, please do. you don't talk about music on ILX/Noize nearly as much as you should

jaxon, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:04 (seventeen years ago) link

there's probably a good reason for that.

dan selzer, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:18 (seventeen years ago) link

unless you're being self depreciating, i think i understand what you're talking about. keeping yr precious little secrets to yrself. no?

jaxon, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:30 (seventeen years ago) link

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TURN OFF THAT LIL PENIS KID VIDEO!?

jaxon, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:31 (seventeen years ago) link

keeping secrets only because there's stuff I want to release and I don't want someone else to do it first, or worse yet, everyone to go download everything and get all bored and jaded "oh I can't believe you're putting that 20 year old record out, that's soooo last year". That and I haven't always enjoyed discussing music on ILX. Shocking, no?

dan selzer, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:51 (seventeen years ago) link

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 13 July 2007 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

SECRETS AND LIES

sanskrit, Friday, 13 July 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago) link

You should put r@re tracks up without any identifying info on them.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Friday, 13 July 2007 18:07 (seventeen years ago) link

I'm going to do that with some DJ mixes I think. I know some haters think that the elitist move, but I've always relished the mystery, it's fun. Most of the stuff I want to put on DJ mixes aren't that obscure, but I want to inspire that feeling when someone's like "oh man, what is that!". I still get that all the time. I think it's something that should never die.

Hey people. Thanks for coming out thursday night. The ILX contigent and 3 other people I know were the only people I knew who showed up. And yeah, imagine my suprise, after sitting there from like 10:30 to 1am, when suddenly the place was packed and we had a solid dance party from 1 to 3-ish. Time Has Come to Day is an italo track by Bobby Davenport that was recently repressed by Flexx.be:

http://www.flexx.be/item/flexx006

As far as keeping a car in nyc...maybe look on craigslist for parking if you can afford it? Otherwise, you can always take the 7 to Sripraphai.

Don't know about the records...you mean visit the guys collection or the 12"s you grabbed? I'm broke from my recent trips to California and Pittsburgh. Did you know Pittsburgh is a much more beautiful city than any I saw in California?

bell_labs, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:16 (seventeen years ago) link

good question

sexyDancer, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:18 (seventeen years ago) link

if you can avoid sunday evening travel, do so.

we usually take the lincoln tunnel, but that's not really convenient to south brooklyn. we did the gwb once and really regretted it.

lauren, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:34 (seventeen years ago) link

i'll probably come back saturday evening around 11, which should be even worse i'm sure.

bell_labs, Monday, 15 October 2007 15:37 (seventeen years ago) link

It looks like you can go through the bronx but I don't think that will save you any time and it'll take as long to get there.

I'd say look for alternate routes to the Holland and give yourself enough time. When I was living in South Brooklyn, I used to take the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the west side highway to the Holland, therefore not having to go through Canal or Delancey. But even with that you can often hit traffic at the end. Likewise, the last time we did it from the Williamsburg Bridge (from queens we take the BQE to the Williamsburg) instead of going accross Delancey and getting stuck in traffic on Broome, we cut up north, took houston accross and came down 7th ave and had less traffic that way.

due to unfortunate and unforseen events, we've had to move the Haunted Disco party to a new spot, luckily we got one of my favorites. The awesome back room at Union Pool. So without further ado...

Come to the Haunted Disco! The ghost of Dan Selzer, Jeremy Campbell's re-animated corpse and Matt Radune's posessed body DJ at the haunted disco, aka the back room of Union Pool. Scary costumes recommended...Velvet Vampire? Xanadu Zombie? Leisure Suit Lycanthrope? Studio 54 Slasher? George Hamilton in Love at First Bite? Pretty Scary!

This is our third annual halloween party/birthday party for my favorite person ever Nicole. You may remember Wild Kingdom at M Shanghai last year, or Disco in Space at Capones 2 years ago. You may not because you were too drunk. Whatever, this will be a lot of fun. A nice space and good music and great DJs and stupid costumes. what more do you want? Please spread the word and tell friends so people know not to go to the previous location and that this is where the fun will be.

Saturday October 27th 10pm
Union Pool Back Room
484 Union Ave and Meeker, Williamsburg Brooklyn
Take the L train to Lorimer or the G to Metropolitan.

Man, is something serious going around? I keep asking my girlfriend why she's been stuffing cotton balls up my nose and down my throat while I sleep every day for the last two weeks. I thought it was allergies untill one night last week when I started sweating and shivering at the same time, then went to bed and had really strange dreams and woke up with the sheets all off the mattress. I've been taking a little claritan, a little sudafed, a little of that stuff they use to replace sudafed, lots of tylenol, orange juice, tea, and I still feel like a truck ran me over.

Another good friend didn't make it last night because of a "head cold".

HAY DAN:
got a Photoshop/prinitng question far ya. I'm prepping a three color print job for a LP label / cd face. In the black and white layer, can I assume the printer will print the white as clear? Or do I need to cut out the white? If so, is there a quick way to do that? This is a b/w photo set at %50 opacity.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:12 (seventeen years ago) link

I kind of understand what you're asking but not totally sure.

In general, there isn't any such thing as white in photoshop or quark/indesign, white is really absence of image, or "knocked-out", therefore the paper shows through. When preparing artwork for CDs, say you want black type on a white CD, you have to make a plate called "white" and also ask for the CD Flood White, print to center. That will coat the CD with white first before laying down the black type image or any other colors. Actually, you should always flood white first even if you're printing different colors, that way all following colors are printing on ink instead of partially on ink and partially on the CD.

A good way to test this type of stuff out is to print seperations, then you'll get each color layer printed as a solid black image and you can better see what will happen.

And for the above, I'm not sure if the flood white has to count as one of your colors of the 3 color job. That's only for the CD though, it's not a problem with the LP label so long as the label's paper is white.

If you ever need to, there are complicated ways of seperating the black from white in a BW image using various photoshop selection tools, then saving the selections onto different layers of a multichannel document.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:33 (seventeen years ago) link

thanks, dan. that answers my question. hopefully I won't need to get complicated with a tool tool.
--flood white usually counts. the SD disc came out black on silver because I didn't realize that.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:46 (seventeen years ago) link

and Print To Center is good, don't think they charge extra for that, but that's when the color goes all the way to the little hole in the middle.

I've generally gone in the direction of making the CD art as simple as possible. If you print a normal 4 color image, because the linescreen is so course, it ends up looking really crappy. A BW image should fair better but you're still getting a relatively courser linescreen.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 19:51 (seventeen years ago) link

I've only used four color labels for the AlterN vinyl, but you're right it comes out dark n shitty. I usually use hard-line minimal flat color design. I'm hoping using %50 opacity on this b/w photo will mellow things out. (image is a yellow full moon, btw)

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:07 (seventeen years ago) link

The linescreen for vinyl labels should be fine, it was CDs that suffer. If stuff looks dark n shitty on vinyl labels it's probably because you're printing on uncoated stock instead of coated and there's all kinds of issues there with ink density and whatnot.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:26 (seventeen years ago) link

it's Bl4ck D1ce that suffer for this kind of shit, y'know.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:51 (seventeen years ago) link

the guy who does a lot of their production knows what he's doing...a lot of what it comes down to is everything has to be done on the cheap. You know how much money real companies spend on this shit? The cost of one proof printed at any of the places I've worked at is half the entire budget for an independent record label releasing a CD!

dan selzer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 20:56 (seventeen years ago) link

It's no slight on r0b, it's just their texture-heavy collage stuff always looks like crap on cd face and LP.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 21:00 (seventeen years ago) link

like I said, it's best to keep the CD face simple. On the Prefects CD there's a 4c image but is' kinda abstract. Everything else I've done is pretty flat. It's also nearly impossible to match the color printing on the CD to colors used in the insert, so I often go for something contrasting. Lately I figure just a bright neon magenta CD does the job. Open the case and POW–there it is.

^ do you happen know the name of the very first track? i know this isnt your half of the mix, but since you are a scholar of considerable learning i thought id ask anyway.

i listened to this mix after dmr reco'med it. really liked it, dug the halloween stuff even more. afterwards i had to google this jacqu3s renau1t character to figure out who he was, i'm so out of touch with what the young people are into these days.

sanskrit, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 03:56 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry I don't know it.

A lot of what Jacques plays are his own edits.

I met him a few years ago, he used to come to Capones on occasion when we were doing Alldisco. He recorded a mix that was really great and pretty up my alley that was supposed to be the first release on Italians Do It Better. I don't know if they pressed a lot but I think Mike was selling them. He does edits and some new productions as Runaway with Marcos Cabral, who used to work at Sonic Groove I think and was a techno dude in the pre-electroclash days. They've got stuff coming out on Wurst Edits and a few other labels and Jacques and Justin Miller who works for the DFA host tuesday nights at 205 Club.

haitch, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

jaxon- you have no idea! google "trapping". But that fact is, most designers are not concerned with this stuff, they either pay the printer fix it all or have production artists working for them, though that's not much different from designers working in photoshop and handing things off to coders or whatever.

maybe google "print trapping" otherwise you get lots of articles about beavers.

not sure if they "pressed" any? I got it as a bonus when I ordered the first three Italians 12"s and it came as a CDR. it's real good tho!

also bonus points for making your DJ name a Twin Peaks ref. (unless that is dude's real name, in which case double bonus points)

bonus bonus bonus

dmr, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:40 (seventeen years ago) link

I always assumed that's his real name.

The reason I wasn't sure about them "pressing" any is because I know Jacques made a bunch of dupes with silkscreened covers that he was giving away, then Mike announced it was going to be the first in a series of mix CDs on Italians, then I remember Jacques being like "when's it coming out". So I don't know if Mike just took the rest of Jacques, or if he pressed another batch or whatever.

first Excepter show in Manhattan, part of KA recorded there...

sexyDancer, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I couldn't remember, I knew it was the first or second, same with Cause Co-Motion, so I think it must've been their second show. I remember you brought the traffic lamp and asked me to mix to the Misfits for my last song I think.

dan selzer, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:31 (sixteen years ago) link

First show in Manhattan. we'd played a string of shows in Brooklyn, starting at Level X, then at Intervention.
pretty sure I requested Psychic TV's "Eve of Destruction" at the close of our set.

that was a cool read Dan.

Steve Shasta, Thursday, 31 January 2008 20:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Why did I say Misfits. You know what, it was the Melvins. At some point you put on a Melvins CD and sampled and looped it or something, I swear.

For the newbies, Intervention was Chris and Ivan of Ghost Exits party at the BQE Lounge. I remember thinking, who'd be crazy enough to open a bar in that part of williamsburg? I saw Excepter play there, through the smoke. I think I was with Lauren, actually.

glad you liked reading it...check back because I'm gonna keep editing it and adding shit and the comments section will be stupid mad loquacious as well.

god, were those on like tuesdays? some bad mornings after that. bqe was a crazy set up. whatever happened with that space? seems empty as anyting still ... this was just after ihu and craig (and sometimes me)used to do that wed night thing at warsaw with ghost exists as the "house band". ivan entering the room in a wheelchair...

lauren, Thursday, 31 January 2008 21:11 (sixteen years ago) link

absolutely not.

Remote Lounge was bizarre. I DJ'd there once, I can't remember what for.

I do know however that the building BQE lounge is in was bought by a young couple where are succesfull playwrites and friends of a friend of mine. They turned it into their apartment. I think that included the restaurant downstairs? They lived in half and rented the other, I think.

i dont recall who else was on. ihu had put it all together...i went home real early as i was dying...and after 2 drinks it was time for a cab and 13hrs of sleep. i think that was the 1st disaster there, aided by crap weather and the fact i did nothing to get any press or promotion...i recall looking forward to meeting you that night, as id only seen you play or had some virtual communications at that point, but only lasted like an hour. 2nd disaster was having the doors closed cause of capacity at 11 pm, and still only making about 100 bucks in the end...last show/party i did anywhere in new york.

q: if jon williams de-indexed this thread, how come i found it on google?

by the way, i was trying to remember that crazy all-in-one mixer/HD/decks/fx device made by, i think DENON, that dan was talking about at some point

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

q: why you googling me?

The Denon HD-2500. I have to say I'm torn now because Pioneer FINALLY came out with a new CDJ, the 400, which has USB for playing songs off a hard-drive. I'm not sure why it's so much cheaper then the CDJ 800 and 1000, what features is it lacking? And you'd still need to buy two of them, whereas with the denon you buy one unit and each platter can load songs from the same drive. Still, you look cooler scratching with the Pionner then with the Denon's goofy little disks.

flashback records in islington:

http://www.flashback.co.uk/

there's a used records shop on essex road that i think you'd really like dan (lots of s'express!) though i can't remember the name of it right now.

and of course rough trade, off brick lane:

the one on essex road may be called "haggle vinyl"

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Haggle needs an enema. But I kinda like 'em messy. And the older dude in there is quite amusing. I usually get caught at Flashback (also on Essex Rd) before I get there.

The run of shops from the Notting Hill Music and Video Exchange(s) to Ladbroke Grove still works pretty good. And there's also Intoxica and that cool twofer shop where a pair of dudes (once partners??) with rival stores sit facing each other in the same place. Always interesting originals. And Honest Jon's has a lot of distinctly cheap soul and jazz reissues.

Mostly shite pubs round there though.

otherwise ill second the line of shops in ladbroke grove

bb, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:12 (sixteen years ago) link

the shop that's been split down the middle is called minus zero/stand out, i think. lots of power pop, and at least one of the guys will talk your ear off if you're interested. definitely worth visiting. i wouldn't bother with intoxica, even if you're in the area. not really your thing, and the prices are absurd.

there were a couple of second-hand shops in hanway st, which runs in a u shape between the end of oxford street and tottenham court road. i don't know if either are still open, but both were decent for bargain-hunting. at one point, one of the shops had a huge box of 45s going for something ridiculous like 50 for £10.

Why don't people in the UK understand "ice"? I want ICE WATER, is that so hard to understand? And stop giving me glasses of coke without ice. It only tastes good when it's really cold and the ice melts a bit. Coke knows this, that's why on their cans in the UK it says "Serve Cold" or something. It also says "caffeinated soft drink with vegetable extracts". What the hell does that mean?

Will there be copies of the Bumrocks LP at the Bumrocks Dazzle thingy or do I have to hunt it down somewhere else?

dmr, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 17:53 (sixteen years ago) link

you have to hurry up with the Stendig calendars because they always sell out.

Apparently we're still on the fence about whether the next Dazzle Ships, wed Dec 17th, will be the Bumrocks release party. And if so, we probably won't have copies to sell, word is there aren't many copies around. If bumrocks can't make it, it will be a holiday party and we'll play nothing but the Winston Tong christmas tree rap from the Crepuscule xmas comp and Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses over and over again.

Yes. Pretty misleading though. It was taken at a WFMU record fair years ago. Steve, who runs Iris Records in Jersey City and can be found all over the city on sunny weekends selling vinyl used that picture to promote the South Jersey record fair a few weeks ago and now this! For the record I was the one who suggested he use Warsaw for the Brooklyn Record Riot. I went to the first one and DJ'd. It was packed. I bought a Mars 12".

This very picture captures the exact moment I introduced Mike Simonetti to italo-disco by showing him a Fun Fun record, thus inspiring the Italians Do It Better label and changing the world.

dan, do you know mikie well?

jaxon, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 05:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I've never met mikie! Just emailing via facebook, sort of virtual friend of a friend thing via Josh, who I also don't know very well though I set up a last minute gig for him on a tuesday a year or so ago that only 4 of my friends showed up to.

I don't know much about bakeries...there's a little "italian" bakery though probably with not many/any italians called V+V or something on Roosevelt just past the LIRR that makes really awesome black and white cookies. Closer to Sunnyside on Skillman there's a pretty famous french bakery called Le Marjalaine which is really good. http://www.lamarjolainebakery.com/

Further down roosevelt there's some south american joints, one next to El Sitio in the high 60s makes good wheat empenadas.

What have you been digging in the area? Had a great meal at Zabb in Jackson Heights last night which I haven't had in ages. They have a few dishes that blow Srip out of the water though they don't have as consistently good and varied a menu as them.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 13:46 (fourteen years ago) link

ah, mikie just used to do a disco night at the same place i was doing one, so we'd go to each others' events. and josh and i are doing a kraut/minsyn/postpunk night together now.

max, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:51 (fourteen years ago) link

been digging basically everything (the only disappointing woodside/jh/ss meal I've had in the last two months was de mole in sunnyside.)

cannelle in JH is probably my single favorite queens food but it's something of a walk. absurdly cheap tho.

iatee, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:05 (fourteen years ago) link

sorry to hear that about de mole. I know it can be mixed...we were among the earliest fans when they just switched to that name and were really cheap and never busy. They've raised the prices and are still very cheap, and deliver. But they've grown and gotten too crowded. Some of the food can be bland but the dishes I like, the chicken mole burrito, the tinga plate and tinga quesadilla are great. And breakfast is great. But even normal stuff I find to at least be fresh and well made and it's a really pleasant place. You should try it again. Torta's are good too.

Speaking of tortas...the cemitas at Tia Julia! I need to have one of those again.

Never been to Cannelle.

What's new in the new year? I quit DJing because the last several parties I've done have been so dead. OH yeah. I'm djing this saturday. And maybe at Market Hotel in a few weeks.

I have like 7 jobs.

Method Actors CD out in march, then a string of money-losing vinyl/digital obscurities.

dan selzer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 07:42 (fourteen years ago) link

go to cannelle! it's a legit french bakery with queens prices (under $2 for a v. nice pastry or cupcake)

hmm will give de mole another shot one day, but I actually had the chicken mole burrito. I didn't find it gross, but it just seemed sorta bland. maybe will try to find something w/ more spice next time.

la flor OTOH exceeded my expectations. that place is amazing in every sense.

iatee, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Haven't been in a while but used to go all the time. Especially for brunch. I love the quesadilla, which is really unlike any standard kind of quesadilla. Two GIANT masa cakes filled with tons of cheese and chicken or shrimp and topped with more cheese. Cover it with the red and green sauces and it's seriously awesome.

I had dinner there once, they had a kind of cheesy guitarist/singer and it's a bit "upscale" for a neighborhood joint and a bit pricey, but I had these ribs with mexican slaw that was totally amazing.

I've heard of cannelle but it's def. far for us.

I also like Cuckoo's Nest for Irish pub breakfast on sundays (great "chips"), Mangal Kebab on Queens blvd for great chicken/lamb gyro, hummus, lentil soup, etc. Dehli Heights and Mehfil for indian. (the latter has a great lunch buffet.) among others...

dan selzer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

don't you have a car! it's far for us too, but north of broadway it's a pleasant walk through the jh garden homes.

only had brunch at la flor, dinner did seem more pricey but brunch was v. fairly priced for what we got.

iatee, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah...we have a car! We'll check it out. I've read good things about it. We drive up that way for Pio Pio on Northern as well.

Brunch is normal priced, though not cheap like De Mole, but dinner was really good.

Kiss & Tell, a monthly party at Rose Live Music in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has been producing unique theme based events for over four years. Each month Kiss & Tell invites well known electronic music DJs eager to play a different kind of set, filled with music outside of the genres they are known for. Our DJs play italo, disco (classics and edits), party jams, electro, house, girl groups, gothypants, new wave, and post punk.

This month the ladies at Kiss & Tell are hosting their own party and skipping the prom. We invited two of our all time favorite Kiss & Tell DJs to play postpunk and other gems. Too bad you are not invited to our anti-prom. But if you were, you would...

+ Listen to: Postpunk, New Wave, No Wave, Punk Funk, Mutant Disco, Art Rock, Ska, Synthpop

+ Wear: Something old, torn, and stolen. Black leather and safety pins. Neon, neon, neon. A nice Jonathan Richman suit. Big Gothy Robert Smith Hair. Thin ties. Cut up band T-shirts.

All night long: $5 rum & coke
$5 vegetarian pasta dinners
and extensive bar menu available all night

Time Out this week: "Seze Devres, resident DJ Bethany Benzur and their pals are back at the intimate Rose Live Music to spill the secrets of disco, exotica, synth material, new wave and plenty more. This edition features guest deck sets (of the postpunky, art-rocky and synth-poppy varieties) from Acute Records recluse Dan Selzer and the Clink label’s Grant “Insideout” Aaron. Dress as your favorite postpunk artist! (We’re opting for Creatures-era Budgie.)"

Thanks for the Method Actors, Dan. Heard "Do the Method" for the first time yesterday and I had to listen to it four times in a row.
Found their lp at the community station I volunteer at later that night. It's in great shape, too. Nice gatefold cover, these guys were sharp.
It's funny, the exact same thing happened to me with the Fire Engines.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

and that's why I do a record label, I suppose.

So people can download my sample then go steal the original vinyl from their local radio station.

no, really, it's the girls and money.

Gatefold cover, but 1 or 2 LPs? The original UK release was a double LP, the american version single, but they were both gatefolds. Our CD contains selections from both platters along with most of the singles leading up to it.

btw, last night was fun. Small and weird as predicted, but more dancing then I expected. It was dark so I couldn't tell if there were 2 or 20 people at any given time, probably closer to the former, but it's not every wednesday night in NYC where people dance to The Associates, Josef K, Au Pairs, Repetition, Drinking Electricity, etc

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:20 (fourteen years ago) link

DUDE I am gonna buy the cd and I haven't stolen a single thing from the station!
Sheesh I knew that was gonna come off the wrong way.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

It's the single lp.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I live in bumfuck Missouri, I couldn't buy the cd in time for my show last night. Most labels send radio stations promo cds for free, ya know? Not saying that you should send on to our station, but I did in fact download it for Promotional use, imagine that.
I heard the song in the Dusted review.
FWIW I tried to buy the cd and the People of the North lp online yesterday and my card was declined. I am not sure why, either.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

And I bought the Fire Engines cd, too.

have you been to the legend's bar and grill in jackson heights? apparently it used to be another bbq/bar place? I like BBQ and it's like a 5 min walk so I'm hoping the answer is "yes" and "it's good and cheap"

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 01:32 (fourteen years ago) link

no i haven't. It used to be called Pearsons(sp?), a bar in LIC with great bbq in the back, then they moved the bar to Jackson Heights, then Pearson's changed to Legends but it's still the same cook or something? Word is/was that it's not as good as it used to be but is still good? I don't know why I've never been. Vegetarian girlfriend, probably.

Went to Payag last night, the new filipino place up near La Flor. It's pretty serious, big investment. It was crowded, mostly filipino but a few whities. The food was ok to pretty good, I'm still trying to figure out what to eat. It was "refined" and a bit fusiony, read: upscale. Not watered down, the shrimp wasn't peeled. And filipino food is fusiony to begin with, with heavy Spanish influence. A band started playing, traditional music? Nope, acoustic cover of Poker Face. Pretty surreal. Never know what to get from filipino food, will research and go back.

Not super cheap, not really expensive but def. not a super deal.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:42 (fourteen years ago) link

that's the 'modern filipino' place right? yeah me and the girl have very little interest in filipino food, partly cause our bathroom often smells of it strongly due to this place's ventilation. it seems like an extremely acquired taste.

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 14:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Dear Dan Selzer:
Hello again. How was lunch? In the future, may I recommend Soul Flavors? It's twice as expensive but three times as good.
Forks.

Such an octopus of a thing. And I have only an inkling! (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 October 2010 15:05 (fourteen years ago) link

lunch was good, a bit of a wait. My sister's taken other family members to Soul Flavors, that's the one close to the train I think? She lives right near there. She's vegetarian and my girlfriend only eats fish, so if we would find ourselves in Jersey City we probably wouldn't end up there. Dosas in the indian section is more likely!

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 21:38 (fourteen years ago) link

re: filipino food. it's so meat heavy, surprised your gf ate there, dan. i dunno if i've ever had a vegetable dish in the 14 yrs i've been w/a filipino woman besides like potatoes or greenbeans as part of a stew or something. is rice a vegetable? imo, it's kind of a boring cuisine. not spicy and not that many spices but i've grown to really like it over the years.

Chicken (or beef or pork) Adobo. slow cooked. heavy on vinegar, soy sauce and garlic.

Pansit Palabok. thin, clear noodle dish with sliced veggies (carrots, onion, celery). usually has chinese sausages, hard boiled eggs or lil shrimps as a protein.

Lumpia. fried egg rolls. lumpia shanghai are tiny ones w/just pork. the "normal" ones are called Lumpia Prito or Lumpia Gulay or just Lumpia. they're bigger w/veggies (bean sprouts, string beans, carrots) and sometimes small shrimp or ground meat. and Turon are plantain or banana lumpia w/brown sugar.

Kare Kare. love this one. oxtail w/a peanut butter sauce. served on the bone so you have to dig in the crevices, but it's hella tender.

Crispy Pata. super deep fried pork leg w/skin on. dip in vinegar w/fish sauce. tasty but fried so much it gets kinda hard. wife broke a crown last time she ate this.

Lechón. whole roasted suckling pig. this is ridiculously amazing but kinda scary. the skin is crispy like chips. also Chicharrón is very popular. fried pork rinds. dipped in vinegar/

Siopao (pronounced show pow). steamed pork buns

they have some really great breads and pastries. Ensaymada (sometimes filled w/cream cheese) & Pandesal. these are generally soft and buttery and sometimes a lil sweet. and they have empenadas that are similar to argentinian ones.

most desserts are rice and coconut based. Ube (oooh-bee) is a sweet purple yam. Halo Halo is a fun shaved ice dish with toppings like milk, coconut, tapioca and a bunch of tropical fruits.

dishes to possibly stay away from (unless you're like Andrew Zimmern) is Balut. fertilized duck egg. wife's dad likes to taunt her w/this one. you can see the beak and egg inside. he slurps it up. also they have a "Black Soup" aka blood stew

jaxon, Monday, 11 October 2010 01:54 (fourteen years ago) link

damn you know more about filipino food than you do about 70s singer songwriters

max, Monday, 11 October 2010 01:57 (fourteen years ago) link

whoah DJ Balut in the house.

Seriously thanks for the tips. I actually live very close to "Little Manila", the strip of Roosevelt Avenue in Woodside near Jackson Heights that's filled with filipino places but have always been too intimidated. Then one opened up right near my house (Engeline's, iatee) and I had breakfast there that was really good, pork eggs and rice, but still didn't know what to get. At This new one, Nicole got shrimp, she eats seafood. I got pork adobo which seemed to mostly be deep-fried pork belly. It was served with some kind of tasty pickled vegetable and rice and a sauce. It was fine, good enough that I'd like to go back and explore some more, or go to the others, but I haven't been blown away by filipino food yet. Nicole's shrimp was "cooked in seagram's ginger ale". I need to go with meat eaters so I can try more. Same problem with our recent explorations of some of the indonesian and malaysian restaurants in Elmhurst. It's harder for her to find something, and I can only try one meat dish so I don't get a good cross section.

http://acuterecords.com/UnderwaterDisco.jpg

as written on the Acute blog:

For 6 years now, I’ve thrown a disco halloween party that also serves the purpose of being a birthday party for my girlfriend, roommate and crafts partner Nicole. Starting as part of the long-forgotten Alldisco party, these parties have moved around Williamsburg and have had many different fun and silly themes. Dancing In Space, Wild Kingdom, The Haunted Disco, Night of the Living Disco Dead and last years 80′s Prom of Horrors. This year we also wanted to celebrate the first year anniversary of Nicole’s online literary and arts journal, Underwater New York.

So that brings us to this years theme…THE UNDERWATER DISCO. You can dress up however you like, but water themed costumes are encouraged! For instance, I am going as a Music Pirate. Like the notorious 18th century pirates of the west indies but instead of stealing barrels of wine and gold coins I steal music and share it illegally on the internet. Arrrr that’s a low bit rate, matey!

As usual, I will be joined by my erstwhile DJ partner Tropical Jeremy, who’s already halfway there with a name like that. And as a very special guest, we have none other than Morgan Geist of the pioneering and influential Metro Area and his label Environ. He knows a thing or two about water…just ask him about the fountains of Wayne. It’s a rare opportunity to hear a world-class DJ playing such a fun local down-to-earth party, so don’t miss it!

This may also be the last time we ever do this! We’ll be out of town during Halloween of next year and after that? Who knows, we’ll be too old by then…or DEAD (oooh, spooky)

Here are the details in case you’re too lazy to look at that flyer up there….

it's when in the 80s they used to slice tape to create stuttering effects. See anything by The Latin Rascals and Omar Santana.

Check out T-La Rock's Breaking Bells (Omar Santana Remix). All done by slicing tape with a razor blade. Totally amazing.

what's good Dan! it's been a minute but what kind of local produce or native new jersey junk food delicacies did you grow up with?

i'm thinking like:

greek diner menu
sloppy joes (not chili, the befouled cole slaw and russian kind)
italian hot dogs
taylor ham

i ask only because i have to contribute to a pot luck lunch and all the above and other obvious ideas (jersey tomatoes) are already taken. i could really use some leftfield nj culinary inspiration!

sanskrit, Saturday, 19 March 2011 03:48 (thirteen years ago) link

you still around, wow?

Let's see.

Greek diner obvious choice is Disco Fries. Or what I call Jersey Poutine. Get the kinda thick steak fries, add gravy and mozzarella, and you're done.

Italian hot dogs is so random I thought I had dreamed it up. My father would take me to a place to get them and I was a picky eater so I'd just get the hot dog and potatoes in pita bread. No peppers and onions.

The hot dog choice of course is the ripper. My father grew up going to Rut's Hut in Clifton, where they'd fry the hot dogs until they burst open. All those new places in the city ("new) like Griff Dogs got that from them. Bourdain said they came from Hirams in Fort Lee or something.

Yes. Sloppy Joes from Town Hall Deli. They ship. And they are fucking great and I make my parents get them every year when I go out there for xmas.

I'd never had taylor ham. We are somewhat jewish at least.

Generally, good pizza was a NJ thing. By the time I was growing up, NYC corner slice pizza was (and remains) usually nasty. The pizza I grew up on was way better then any NY slice joint I've ever been to.

There's an old school divey italian place everyone loves called the Belmont Tavern with specialties like "Shrimp Beeps" and Chicken Savoy. I went there once and wasn't blown away, but people will go to the end of the world for this stuff.

I don't know what else to add. I grew up on pizza bagels.

iatee, Saturday, 19 March 2011 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

happy birthday Dan!

in your honor i ate a ham/cheese single sloppy joe. i don't know why i said that, the first time experiencing them it was nauseating but a good one can be pretty great, depending.

your a lifesaver with the Belmont idea, everything else you mentioned is already taken except pizza. working on the marinara for the shrimp now.

sanskrit, Saturday, 19 March 2011 20:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i meant i don't know why i typed befouled. i still don't understand how those sandwiches can ship without getting soggy. maybe separate pouches for self assembly?

sanskrit, Saturday, 19 March 2011 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

The sloppy joes we get are simply roast beef and turkey, swiss cheese(or provo, can't remember), coleslaw and tons of russian dressing on thin slices of crustless white bread. They get messy but are by no means gross or junky. In my book. A book that is filled with gross and junky sandwiches.

Purple Brain mix on rvng was so great

dmr, Friday, 27 January 2012 17:31 (twelve years ago) link

I wasn't feeling well and had/have to work today so I offered to go on first so I could leave early and not feel guilty. I DJ'd a 1982 college radio set to a mostly empty/bleak room from around 9:15 till 10.

Then Jeremy and Ben went on and played really cool stuff, including way too many of their own upcoming Lectric Sands releases. The bar slowly filled up more or less. Then Purple Brain went on and were great but by then a friend I hadn't seen in a few years came by so I ended up staying there till 1 or 2am. They played great stuff, I need to listen to the recording.

Then I went to Sammy's Halal in Jackson Heights for a very late snack. Then I came home and worked on The Trypes release. Then I went to bed around 3. Slept for 5 hours. Got up did more Acute stuff, then came to work.

I feel great!

dan selzer, Friday, 27 January 2012 17:37 (twelve years ago) link

sounds like a good time!

I went by Jeremy and Ben's studio a couple weeks ago to pick up a copy of the second Zoovox record. Pretty sick space. Amazing view.

I DJ'd around the corner from Heathers at HI Fi last night. Hopefully we're gonna do the last Friday of every month (next one is Feb 24). It was crazy packed ... not because of anything we did, just "East Village bar on a Friday" crowded ... it's p much an indie-rock bar but we played classic rock, funk, soul, then some new-wave and hipstery dance stuff like Midnight Magic, Todd Terje, Lindstrom and nobody openly puked or barraged us w/ requests so I think it went well.

(well actually one girl openly puked but I don't think it was because of the music)

dmr, Saturday, 28 January 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

I have the premiere expert mechanic coming by this weekend finally, and am shopping for another press to balance out my shop, then I hope to be doing a lot of printing. So far I've just done a few business cards and wedding invitations for friends, basic stuff because I've had trouble getting the quality I expect from the press, due to issues that will hopefully be sorted shortly.

awesome set dude

dan can u tell me about the 70's disco label emergency records? i've been slowly accumulating their catalog on soulseek but a lot of it isn't turning up, do they get a lot of props? is vinyl sought-after or rare/$$$? what's your favourite single? most stuff i've heard so far is pretty fantastic and i've always found italo to be super hit or miss idk

flopson, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

More of an 80s label. I think they were one of the New York labels that specialized in licensing/importing euro stuff. There's a whole narrative there about the american gatekeepers like Emergency and Importe/12 that defined "euro-disco" for americans (and later I'd say the same about the chicago Hot Mix DJs).

Kano's I'm Ready/Holly Dolly, Electra's Feels Good were big and influential on house and techno bigtime. (Sharivari = Holly Dolly).

American club stuff like MIchelle Wallace or Chemise She Can't Love You are classic, the latter a floor-filler I used to always hear Danny Wang play when I started DJing.

Most of the records aren't worth much because they're pretty common, certainly in NY at least.

But Emergency switched focus to freestyle, which they helped pioneer with Shannon's Let the Music Play, C.O.D. In the Bottle etc.

I didn't realize they put out a pressing of IMS's Dancing Therapy. That's not so easy to find, at least I still don't have a copy!

Electric Mind's Pick Me Up(Can We Go)/Zwei is a classic, I play that a lot. Early evening warm-up track.

I used to love playing Bo Boss's Tequila, but it's a bit silly. Actually listening again now...it's pretty damn hot.

I see they kept with the euro stuff later on. I'm a big big fan of Taffy's Midnight Radio, which, chronologically, is about as late as I'd dare get with italo. It has that later mid 80s italo sound, more digital, not as lo-fi or spacey, but is super catchy.

dan selzer, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:30 (eleven years ago) link

Then there's electro/freestyle stuff like Nolan Thomas, which I've never particularly dug...you can't walk down a street in NYC with tripping over a dozen copies of Yo Little Brother.

dan selzer, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:33 (eleven years ago) link

but because I was an electro-funk fan before I discovered italo-disco, this is always the first record that comes to mind when I think of Emergency...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gpTUdtrthUI

dan selzer, Sunday, 4 August 2013 19:36 (eleven years ago) link

Just noticed Emergency released Capricorn and Easy Going, both Claudio Simonetti related (Goblin) and was looking for Easy Going's Fear and realized that came out on Importe/12. Interestingly Importe/12 also released most of the Man Parrish stuff, though he was involved in COD. Looking at Importe/12's catalog it's like a little version of Emergency. A bunch of Man Parrish electro/hi-nrg stuff amidst euro licenses like Tantra, Rama, Easy Going. And Elton Motello? There's a ubiquitous compilation Called Prime Cuts 1 The Double Dance Album which is everywhere and features Sunbelt's "Spin It" and one of my all time faves, Show Me Yours by Corruption. One of those weird songs that i don't think was ever released outside of that compilation and a disconet compilation. And NOBODY ever plays it but it's totally killer. Really raw and analog, with awesome female vox.

There were a few stores. There was Crazy Rhythms and then there was Cafe Soundz (an Industrial Café!) and TwinTone(TwoTone?) which was next door and they merged. There was also a more indie-rock store who's name I can't remember which was someone from Venus records, and later on long after I'd left NJ another vintage store w/ record section.

Dinner at Lexington Candy Shop. The place that still makes coke by mixing syrup with seltzer by hand.
