well, he does have a point - the song is a bit thin. it could stand to be much more corpulent.

cousin larry bundgee (bundgee), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

yeah mean we should have fattened up the sound a bit more? in the mids? or the low end?

TIME TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH

john cougar thornton melloncamp (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 13 September 2006 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Holy Hail "Dig My Grave With The Songs I've Sung" - There's a tension in this song, this audible push and pull between what this great tune would be in the hands of artists that I like, and how it is performed by the people who I have some lame grudge against. Holy Hail's yummy little voices and relatively guilt-free playing renders in chocolately miniature fun-size a song that seems built for a passionate Thanksgiving feast, and it's hard to tell whether this is simply the band performing to the fullest of their potential, or the result of timid bet-hedging. I believe that they err on the side of the former, and that they are getting by on their delicious cuteness and tasty but ultimately unsatisfying charm when even they know the song could use more juice. There's some cleverness in scaling the song down to snack-size and avoiding the obvious, and in most ways it quenches my thirst, as their reading lends some interesting breadth to the recording. It sounds like children eating out at a steakhouse in their parents' clothing; this grasp for a maturity that's just out of reach, like the proverbial carrot.

AUGUST COMPANY INDEED:

Shimura Curves "I'm Not Afraid" - Video treatment: The lovely girls of the Shimura Curves are pop scientists. You see them checking data, making measurements, working at computers, and conducting experiments in their laboratory. The lab's decor is somewhere between Apple's current design aesthetic and 60s sci-fi. The band should appear serious and diligent, but also quite beautiful and stylish. When they make declarations like "I'm not afraid of infinities" on the choruses, they make eye contact with the camera, looking both noble and matter-of-fact. There should be a certain mid-20th century propaganda art aesthetic to the entire video, though there should not be any direct appropriation of famous images. The video should end with the girls standing together at night, staring off into the night sky and pondering the cosmos. (Click here for the Shimura Curves' MySpace page.)

- Matthew Perpetua, 4/14/2006 Comments (3)

Shimura Curves "Just Like Friends" - This song begins with the beat from "Just Like Honey" (or, really, "Be My Baby"), and it's actually sort of misleading because the Shimura Curves take that familiar melancholy sound and use it is an emotional starting point for a song that eventually builds up into a bold and brutally honest post-mortem of a soured relationship. As the song reaches its crest, the Curves come off as empowered, resolute, and self-possessed as they quote Orange Juice's "Rip It Up" and rock out with a fierce guitar vamp that sounds as though it's being run through ten pedals at once. (Click here for the Shimura Curves' MySpace page.)

some questions for perpetua (since he disabled comments on his post)

i understand that you had nothing to indicate that it was or was not an unreleased demo recording--but where did you get my music? we certainly did not give it to you.

since when do mp3 blogs go out of their way to post songs they DON'T like? is this common? what is the purpose?

i won't ask you to take it down, but you should understand that there are no plans to release that version of "dig my grave" in the future. those recordings are so we can get signed, not so you can distribute and criticize.

-- Matthew C Perpetua (perpetu...), April 29th, 2006. (inca)

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 14 September 2006 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

I would assume a "blook" is a book where the text has been culled from someone's blog? There seems to be some kind of assumption going on there that blog writing means one fuck to anyone who hasn't got a blog of their own. The only blog I ever read is "matrix synth" and that only because it has loads of pictures of analog synthesizers. Perhaps expecting something like this to work is like expecting someones anotated D&D campaign to work as a Sword-and-Sorcery novel, or someones online sex roleplay to work as erotica. It seems unlikely to be good, somehow.

(x-post perpetua's writing is annoying, Dom's isn't. Dom could probably drop into the '90's NME's roster quite easily - this is not big praise, btw - perpetua isn't even as good (nb "good") as johnny cigarettes)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 14 September 2006 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm being too mean to Dom, btw, I have actually enjoyed a couple of his pieces.

Hi there,

I'm Cesar Menendez, and work on Zune (Microsoft's new music/entertainment project). Anyways, since Zune's focus is on how folks discover and share music, artists, etc, I thought I'd drop a line. I'd love to get a dialog going, and maybe see how you can get involved?

We're actually going to hold a Zune Preview event in NYC in October - and I'd love to invite you to that (more details forthcoming) - are you interested? If so, drop me your snail mail addy so I can send you an invite.

Hope to talk to you soon,

Cesar Menendez

on his own flux blog

Dr. Alicia D. Titsovich (sexyDancer), Monday, 6 November 2006 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

roffle:

Excepter "Op Pop" - Excepter's performance was technically improvised, but within a set of parameters that included two additional members on stage -- a dark haired woman who read a poem along with the music for the first few minutes of the set but then mostly sat down and witnessed the performance while remaining part of its physical expression, and a blonde woman who sat in on flute and saxophone. The latter player was crucial to the tone of the performance, with her contributions forming a more direct textural connection to the group's free jazz ancestry, and recurring as a formal element in sampled form when she was not playing the instrument. As with "Op Pop" from their album Alternation, their performance at the Hiro Ballroom suggested lateral progression by mixing textural elements in and out of the sonic muck. The structure of the piece was fluid in a figurative sense, but implied actual liquidity with its sound often mimicking the sensation of hearing loud music while submerged in water. The fact that it was often difficult to discern exactly what the band was doing with their miscellaneous keyboards, gadgets, and mixing boards was greatly beneficial to their performance, making it so that it was never clear exactly how many of the sounds were being generated. Their indistinct movements and activities mystified their music in a way that is not possible with traditional instruments. Unsurprisingly, my eyes gravitated toward the players who were making sounds that were the most easily identified, though in fairness it's a bit more exciting to watch John Fell Ryan freak out with a megaphone or a gorgeous blonde woman play the flute than to observe a couple guys in the back who appear to be repairing a sampler.

USS New York

It was built with 24 tons of scrap steel from the World Trade Center .

It is the fifth in a new class of warship - designed for missions that include special operations against terrorists. It will carry a crew of 360 sailors and 700 combat-ready Marines to be delivered ashore by helicopters and assault craft.

Steel from the World Trade Center was melted down in a foundry in Amite , LA to cast the ship's bow section. When it was poured into the molds on Sept. 9, 2003, "those big rough steelworkers treated it with total reverence," recalled Navy Capt. Kevin Wensing, who was there. "It was a spiritual moment for everybody there."

Junior Chavers, foundry operations manager, said that when the trade center steel first arrived, he touched it with his hand and the "hair on my neck stood up." "It had a big meaning to it for all of us," he said. "They knocked us down. They can't keep us down. We're going to be back."

The ship's motto? "Never Forget"

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 6 September 2007 03:50 (seventeen years ago)

The most basic appeal of the Smashing Pumpkins comes from the way Billy Corgan strips out the dull machismo from hard rock and replaces it with sensitive androgyny and ecstatic spirituality. Like a majority of the rock stars of the early '90s, Corgan rebelled against the dude-ness of his own genre, but thanks to the unavoidable femininity of his voice and his soft baby face, he was able to depart from tradition more dramatically than the more obviously masculine likes of Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder. Unsurprisingly, one of the most dramatic, joyous, and definitive moments in the entire sprawling Pumpkins catalog comes on "Frail and Bedazzled" when he declares "all I wanted was to be a man / but since I gave up / I FEEL FREE! / I FEEL FREE! / I FEEL FREE! / I FEEL FREE!," which each iteration of those last three words seeming increasingly emphatic and liberating.

IRL CONSEQUENCES!

bell_labs, Wednesday, 12 September 2007 19:50 (seventeen years ago)

Girls Aloud "Sexy! No No No..." - If this is the first Girls Aloud song you've ever heard, you need to know right away that it's not even the best, or even the most intense. While most mainstream and indie rock bands are busy mewling and meowing in this decade, Xenomania has been crafting loads of pumped-up pop songs for Girls Aloud and other UK pop acts that drastically exaggerate the dynamics of both rock and dance-pop to such extremes that it makes most everything else seem relatively flat and lifeless. Xenomania isn't just trying to do a catchy tune -- they want to hijack your body and throw you around, and keep pushing you to new levels of manic elation over the course of a three minute song. Girls Aloud may seem a bit blank on the surface, but the singers are ideally suited to Xenomania's material, especially in the way they convey catty contemptuousness and a creepy sort of chick-lit nihilism. Can we blame Puff Daddy for all this? Once he stepped up to the platinum, MTV (and music in general, especially rap) followed suit: Cribs, Pimp My Ride, etc.

Jared Leto gained 62 pounds to play the overweight Chapman by drinking microwaved pints of ice cream mixed with soy sauce and olive oil every night to bloat himself further.

Because that might taste good, and he's really trying to get into the head of a messed-up dude that probably hates himself?

Sorry for the semi-serious answer. :\
