okay, that was marc cohn.

scott seward (scott seward), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

that one was a big hit.

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
W.C. Handy -- won't you look down over me
Yeah I got a first class ticket
But I'm as blue as a boy can be

Then I'm walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
But do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis
On Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
Then I watched him walk right through
Now security they did not see him
They just hovered 'round his tomb
But there's a pretty little thing
Waiting for the King
Down in the Jungle Room

(Chorus)

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer
But boy you've got a prayer in Memphis

Now Muriel plays piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And they asked me if I would --
Do a little number
And I sang with all my might
And she said --
"Tell me are you a Christian child?"
And I said "Ma'am I am tonight"

(Chorus)

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain
Touched down in the land of the Delta Blues
In the middle of the pouring rain

I'm streaming the WFMU Endless Boogie set from a while back. You could do that.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

haha omg (ian you will appreciate this if anyone is going to)

a) how did media player get on random?
and
b) how did it go from a bardo pond song to "think about me" (fltwd mac)??

AMAZING

rrrobyn, breeze blown meadow of cheeriness (rrrobyn), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

and now spacemen 3??

a friend of mine believes, strongly, that party shuffle (uses mac) is tapped into her energy or just 'knows'. it is kind of eerie. but then, i mean, most of the music is music i have on there because, y'know, i like it. but how does it know what you want to listen to *right now*??
the world.

rrrobyn, breeze blown meadow of cheeriness (rrrobyn), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder if party shuffle uses timestamps in any meaningful way.

hrm.
good work, party shuffle!
i'm listening to a steven r. smith album i got today. "kohl" lp on emperor jones! i got it for $4, cuz a bunch of stuff was on sale at popular vintage clothing emporiun. we got the tip from a customer who scored a bunch of random akarma reissues and stuff. at first i thought it was the same one we were talkin about on the rolling psych/drone thread, because it had a fancy woodcut cover, but then i realized it was on emperor jones and not norton. it's good music for this kind of latenight thing. stoned, drinking, etc. the strumming on "tent pegging" kind of got to me... i should re-listen sometime when i'm not so uppity. but as a whole i like it, especially the all electric stuff which as a more rockin vibe than, but similar tones to, loren mazzacane connors.

be home by 11 (orion), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

also, i might listen to the endless boogie white LP tonight.
i remember listening to the WFMU set at work with HSTENCIL when it originally aired!

I am home and drunk! But George is supposed to come home soon and we might bike to Commonwealth for some "party". No idea what it is, but I am all over the DURNK BIKING IN JANUARY.

I got drunk chatting w/ upstairs neighbor girl who I only met because another apartment's burglar alarm was going off for HOURS and we all thought it was fire alarm. She came down to ask WTF and we ended up talking for hours and I made her dinner & she's a chef/food service manager so that was exciting! I had a one-pot chicken and tomato thing stewing on the stove, just served it up. Now I am out of cigarettes and waiting for roommate.

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

the mark cohen LP is pretty cool, scott. you definitely might dig it. the big lure for me is the 11 minute fingerpicked instro on side 2. the rest of the record is basically folk rock. the songwriting and singing are both pretty solid. the song "is it snowing in buffalo" gets stuck in my head. it's on folkways, from 1977! there are BREAKS on it. x

be home by 11 (orion), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:31 (eighteen years ago)

Understandable typo, Eyun! You were thinking "Emperor Norton" but c'mon dude, that's Skippy and you don't want to go there.

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

Contrary to the rumors, it quickly became evident that Norton had died in complete poverty, and his entire estate amounted to no more than a few dollars. Five or six dollars in small change had been found on his person, and a search of his room at the boarding house on Commercial Street turned up only a single sovereign, worth around $2.50; his collection of walking sticks; his rather battered sabre; a variety of hats (including a stovepipe, a derby, a red-laced Army cap, and another cap suited to a martial band-master); an 1828 French Franc; and a handful of the Imperial bonds he used to sell to tourists at a fictitious 7% interest. The telegrams purported to be from Emperor Alexander II of Russia, who congratulated him on his forthcoming marriage to Queen Victoria; and from the President of France, who told him that such a union would be disastrous to world peace. Also found were his correspondence with Queen Victoria and 1,098,235 shares of stock in a worthless gold mine.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:39 (eighteen years ago)

oh, another thing about this mark cohen record.. there's a song about (john f.) kennedy being shot! in 1977!!

be home by 11 (orion), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

Food was all right. I didn't have any seasonings besides salt/pep and fresh rosemary (I need to replant herbs, all but the chives are dead). And I used black olives but not real kalamata ones, that would taste better. It worked out, though! Used all fresh tomatoes, it came out kind of runny but good over pasta.

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

comets on fire now

i made cookies tonight, healthy ones, raisins, applesauce, etc (no sugar! 2007 resolvations :/ ?)
and so ate some for dinner, b/c of the health factor

here is something funny i read on a horoscope today:
even if you don't win a battle of any description you will emerge smelling like Channel Number 5!
which i think is telling me to go into entertainment

rrrobyn, breeze blown meadow of cheeriness (rrrobyn), Sunday, 7 January 2007 05:53 (eighteen years ago)

Basil and oregano are key, and if using fresh tomatoes I strongly recommend roma/plum tomatoes (less liquid). I sometimes do the fresh tomato pasta sauce thing too, but I usually don't let the tomatoes simmer in that case b/c they get mushy. (xpost)

ME TOO

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Sunday, 7 January 2007 06:08 (eighteen years ago)

I did use plums, and also lots of red peppers but I simmered for long tiem cos I don't mind mushy. I was hoping it would break down into something saucier and it did.

Laurel (Laurel), Sunday, 7 January 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha it took me a full minute before i realized you were responding to the thread title - i was like, is mandee like simmering tomotoes? or should she also go into entertainment? and then, yknow, brain worked

rrrobyn, breeze blown meadow of cheeriness (rrrobyn), Sunday, 7 January 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've never really gone the distance on trying to make an all-fresh-tomato pasta sauce that's genuinely saucy, but I always hear stories about so-and-so's Italian grandma simmering that shit all day.

A-ron Hubbard (Hurting), Sunday, 7 January 2007 06:12 (eighteen years ago)

That's what crock pots are for, Josh. Brown up the meat the night before or in the morning and put it in the pot with the tomatoes/sauce and other veg and seasoning. Come back at 5-6pm and serve.

Sheets are pricey. Laytner's Linens on the UWS had some good sales last time I was there; also see overstock.com and smartbargains.com.

Laurel (Laurel), Saturday, 13 January 2007 20:03 (eighteen years ago)

sure sure sure ... i was only balancing the "girls in heels can make the boys woozy" [absolutely sic] side with "girls in heels can make the boys laugh out loud", really.

sheets will have to wait for another day...did finally get energy saving light bulbs and some comet, though..back to the cleaning and football

i think crocs are ugly and bulky.

zombierza (tehresa), Saturday, 13 January 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

This crazy old woman that bathes in perfume and just sits in the coffee shop all day trying to get people to run chores for her and trys to make me pour half and half into my coffee all the time and really just speaks gibberish once said "girls these days have no clue how to walk in heels, it disgusts me." that was the only thing she has ever said that made sense.

I have a pair of black crocs. I only wear them to walk my dog or when traveling to countries where it is going to rain a lot.

mattp (fauxhemian), Tuesday, 16 January 2007 08:57 (eighteen years ago)

SUCKS.

The one thing that keeps me going is that the patch gives you SHITFUCKCRAZY DREAMS if you put it on before you go to bed, instead of in the morning. That is my reward for non-smoking.

Well, that and the non-dying bit.

Crank: do not, I repeat DO NOT see this movie. If it's on tv, change the channel. If itns' on the plane, take a nap. Even Jason Statham can't redeem this one.

NB: this review may have been written under the influence of many glasses of wine. Also, I am bored.
