OMG I AM HI FOR THE 1ST TIME IN A COONS AGE

The sounds of the Animal Collective, a band from Providence, Illinois, on the surface of Sung Tongs, their new long-playing disc. Right now it's about a "leaf house," which strikes me as a very Hemingwayan proposal: where the word "leaf" intersects with hemispherean intellectual prowess. They go, and go, and go, and like Gertrude Stein's famous quote about Oakland, have nowhere to go but nowhere. There's no one, no one, no one, no one: DEE-DEE-DEE-DEE-DOO-DOO-DOO-DOO. Meow. Kitties. Beautiful, like a 1905 Degas on display in the loo.

Gimme the unknown, the DJ on a tranquil peace parade. Catch the maracas, shaking like Indians of the past: the wheat fields calling, the crows whistling: you could win a rabbit, you could nab a rabbit, and there's no disputing this song is about the march of the Indian west on the Trail of Tears and how civilization disputes this fact.

OMG I AM GOING TO HAVE TO LISTEN TO "SMILE"

The coffee sure is getting older.

AW-OO, YEAH YEAH YEAH

AW-OOOOOOOOOO!

General Motors calling John Fahey in a seventh-inning stretch somwehere in th' 1963 forest.

Ka-kaw! (Why I say this so much lately, part one: I have no earthly clue.) (The Song of Hiawatha resurrects itself on Plymouth Rock: seriously, though, OMG I am going to have to listen to "Smile," right?)

Trippy.

Update: currently the St. Louis baseball Cardinals are putting a stomping on the Los Angeles baseball Dodgers. The score is six to two in the eighth inning. I feel confident that St. Louis will earn a victory in this contest and advance to the National League Championship Series.

Two hits.

OMG a double entendre.

The achievement is made complete, and images abound of surefooted hitters slapping skin with quick-throwing catchers, and the musk of sandalwood pounces on necks of athletic wonder boys. A tight-lipped catcher in blue, the man who is unfortunately not Paul Lo Duca, glares off in the outfield distance for the Californian all-star.

"I singed my eyebrow" will not cut it in this league. Parker, take two stints on the bench.

Old glory hounds relive past days, but I'll keep it brief: my stint on the pitching mound in 1945, starring as the glorious "Hal Newhouser," brings me two tons of joy in a life otherwise considered ill-illustrious.

They call from the forest, pounding on skins of moose and elk and beaver. Come back from the hunt, from the fish, rattling a tightly-stretched hide over a percussion display case. The howl of the Indian, of the wolf stepping into a jig against the pale moonlight.

And they leave just as gracefully.

down here in leezyannie "coonass" means cajun redneck and has no connotations regarding blacks.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Monday, 11 October 2004 14:29 (twenty years ago)

Coonass is a controversial term in the Cajun lexicon: to some Cajuns it is regarded as the supreme ethnic slur, meaning "ignorant, backwards Cajun"; to others the term is a badge of pride, much like the word Chicano is for Mexican Americans. In South Louisiana, for example, one can often see bumper stickers reading "Warning — Coonass on Board!" or "Registered Coonass" (both of which generally depict a raccoon’s backside). The word’s origin is unclear: folk etymology claims that coonass dates from World War II, when Cajun GIs serving in France were derided by native French speakers as conasse, meaning "dirty whore" or "idiot." Non-French-speaking American GIs allegedly overheard the expression, converted it to the English "coonass," and introduced the term back in the United States. There it supposedly soon caught on as a derisive term among non-Cajuns, who encountered many Cajuns in Gulf Coast oilfields. It is now known, however, that coonass predated the arrival of Cajun GIs in France during World War II, which undermines the conasse theory. Indeed, folklorist Barry Jean Ancelet has long rejected this theory, calling it "shaky linguistics at best." He has suggested that the word originated in South Louisiana, and that it derived from the belief that Cajuns frequently ate raccoons. He has also proposed that the term contains a negative racial connotation: namely, that Cajuns were "beneath" or "under" blacks (or coons, as blacks were often called by racists). Despite efforts by Cajun activists like James Domengeaux and Warren A. Perrin to stamp out the term’s use, coonass continues to circulate in South Louisiana and beyond. Its acceptability among the general public, however, tends to vary according to circumstances, and often depends on who says it and with what intention. Cajuns who dislike the term have been known to correct well-meaning outsiders who use the epithet.

Japan under raccoon alert
AP
September 17, 2004

TOKYO: They're thieving, attic-squatting menaces, a foreign invasion that poses such a threat to Japanese public health that the government is planning a crackdown.

Raccoons have long been beloved in Japan, where one was the star of a popular cartoon, and a raccoon pet fad beginning in the late 1970s led to thousands of them being imported.

That fad, Japanese officials say, has led to today's raccoon alert.

Foreign raccoons are now breeding in the wild, threatening ecosystems, pushing out native species and causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage annually, officials say.

"Those who have never seen a raccoon before are still charmed by them," said Yasuko Takano, an environmental official with the Hokkaido prefectural government in northern Japan.

"But others from more rural areas like central Hokkaido know how much damage they can cause," she said.

Raccoons are estimated to have caused 33 million yen in crop damage in fiscal 2002 on Hokkaido island, where 1,022 animals were caught and exterminated.

Officials are uncertain how many raccoons exist nationwide. But they say complaints have soared in recent years after the charm of the furry, ebony-faced creatures wore off and owners began getting rid of them.

"It's really become a problem in these past five to six years. People have called in to complain about raccoons living in their attics, urinating and defecating there," said spokesman Masaru Hirezaki from Kamakura city, just southwest of Tokyo.

"The smell and damage can be so bad that some people have had to put down a new roof," he said.

Attacks on humans are rare – but not unheard of.

Last month, a 57-year-old woman was walking her dog in central Japan when she was attacked by a raccoon that bit her in 26 places, media reports said.

Japan's Parliament passed a new law in June to strengthen measures that could be taken against foreign animal species that pose an ecological threat, said Environment Ministry spokesman Masaru Horikamu.

Horikamu said the measure will probably allow authorities to kill raccoons without a permit if they are causing damage.

Meanwhile, Hokkaido officials are grappling with a surging raccoon population that poses alarming long-term effects.

Raccoons have disrupted the ecosystem enough in Hokkaido to cause a decline in the number of gray heron and Japan's native raccoon dog, the "tanuki", officials say.

And diseases carried by raccoons, such as roundworm and rabies, can be potentially fatal if they infect humans, officials add.

Declaring "emergency measures", the prefecture has pledged to eradicate the raccoons from the wild and aims to cull 2,000 per year.

When I was walking home from UC Berkeley to BART (the very same night I ate vietnamese on shattuck with mr. and mrs. adamratchetl), the folx i was with and i walked by a raccoon that was just hanging out on a driveway about 3-4 feet from us. it behaved as domesticated as a cat, but i kindly had to remind my one friend that they have extremely sharp claws and are not unprone to rabies and other afflictions. we continued on.

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:04 (twenty years ago)

the big evil raccoon that keeps threatening monchichi in the backyard is about to have it's "age" abruptly shortened with a shovel.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 11 October 2004 17:11 (twenty years ago)

yeah... raccoons are all over berkeley and north oakland. i've seen groups of 3 to 5 of them here and there... around trash and scurrying into and out of sewer drains... hey, we've got the BART... i imagine the sewers are probably the safest kind of commute for them.

yeah, i've had conversations with several native southerners this morning regarding "coon's age" and while everyone agrees calling a black person a "coon" is very rude, "coon's age" seems more a straight up raccoon reference and unintended to be racist.

alas and so on... there are probably better ways to express "in a long time".

bear in mind one of my earliest memories is of my dad blasting a barn cat with a 12 gauge after said cat got up in my 2.5 year old grill and swiped a cupcake out of my hand.

I went stoned grocery shopping with the roommate last night, what a treat. I was staring at the olive bar for FOREVER until I eventually asked this girl working there if there was somewhere I could find descriptions of all the stuff on the olive bar, she gave me a funny look and pulled on my sleeve (urging me to lean over) - lo and behold, right under the sneeze guard there were little descriptions of everything! Oh how we laughed.

I keep forgetting I have the top part of my head but then I realize it's because I'm wearing a hat

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 4 March 2007 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

Bohemian Life
All is calm: nothing but the cooing of doves, the magical incantations of a hypnotist, the soothing sounds of a harp. We think back to our childhood, with our gouache paints and crimped paper, our innocent introduction to the world of creativity… until the artist within, bohemian scarf at his neck, poses the crucial question: Career or Life?
Artist : Manue11e Gau+hier (Montreal)

Corn nut
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
(Redirected from Corn Nuts)

Corn nuts (or toasted corn) are a snack food made by roasting or deep frying maize.

strgn, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 11:08 (eighteen years ago)

History

Albert Holloway invented corn nuts in 1936. He originally sold them to taverns as a beer snack, calling them Brown Jug Toasted Corn.[1]

[edit] Preparation

Corn nuts are prepared by soaking whole corn in water for three days, then boiling them in oil until they are hard and brittle.[2]

[edit] CornNuts

Halloway later renamed his product CornNuts. He also learned of a giant breed of corn grown in Cusco, Peru, and began to make his product using this variety's giant kernels. His research eventually led to a hybrid Cusco corn which could be grown in the climate conditions of the United States.[1]

Today, CornNuts is part of Planters, a subsidiary of Kraft Foods. It is sold in six flavors: Original, Barbeque, Nacho Cheese, Chile Picante, Salsa Jalisco and Ranch.[1]

i know i don't usually share this kind of thing but guys i smoked way more weed than necessary tonight
and am contemplating going to a party? one i even had a part in telling people abt? where there are plenty of cute guys? and it is a good thing weed is making me slow and in no state to walk several blocks in the rain. and it was also making me make jokes for no one but myself to get. really, not v gettable.
whoaa. hm.

rrrobyn, Saturday, 2 June 2007 06:48 (eighteen years ago)

i mean it's already been kind of an epic night anyway

rrrobyn, Saturday, 2 June 2007 06:50 (eighteen years ago)

i was just going to make a post describing your previous post as 'epic' then you followed it up with a post using the word epic. craziness. its like if you were thinking of 'plate of shrimp' & suddenly someone says like 'plate' or 'shrimp' or 'plate of shrimp'. no explanation. no point in looking for one either. its all part of the cosmic unconsciousness.

deeznuts, Saturday, 2 June 2007 06:57 (eighteen years ago)

go to cute guy party that you were promoting-ish. how could that be a losing propisition?? plus, a walk in the rain + being STONED, MAN, sounds great!

i am not a good pot-smoker, whatever that means. but suffice it to say that the last couple of times that i smoked were rough. both times i felt that my brain was folding over on itself (and not in any good way). the first time i couldn't sleep for the life of me, and ended up talking absolute rubbish to my then-roommate, and ultimately out of desperation slinked down to a horrible open-at-6am kinda bar in an effort to try to establish some sort of managable equilibrium in my system via chill-out beers. the most recent time was similar, but i somehow rode out the gnarliness. i'm not sure i can ever smoke again, unless it is magical super strength nocal weed, which, at least in my experience, seems to have more of a mellowing effect. but i guess that may be just my particular idiosyncratic psychic constitution at work...

when a flushing toilet seems to be talking to me, i feel like that is not good. but maybe i've just forgotten what drugs is all about? (i just want music to sound bright or whatever; not be on the receiving end of a gurgling toilet's one-way conversation)

dell, Saturday, 2 June 2007 07:23 (eighteen years ago)

man-age-able. that looks better.

dell, Saturday, 2 June 2007 07:26 (eighteen years ago)

also, solipsistic-ish jokes are one of the things i associate with being the stoned, almost more than anything else. like, every third thought that comes into my mind seems like some chuckle-worthy humor, even though it is invariably of some skewed sub-pun variety that at best would make others merely wrinkle their noses.

i've also for a while given considerable thought to the idea that if i happened to take up smoking on a regular basis, various elements of my life which currently frustrate me would subsequently magically fall into place. i've yet to test that theory...but i do know more than enough people who smoke daily+ and seem to live charmed lives.

god knows i need something. it's sorta come down to tony robbins vs weed. (or both).

dell, Saturday, 2 June 2007 07:48 (eighteen years ago)

Trayce, Thursday, 12 July 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

corn nuts are good

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 12 July 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

sometimes their crunchiness can be way too intense though. you will have a mouthful and you'll cracking away on these things, and you get to this point where you start to worry, like you get a particularly solid corn nut that's real harsh on a tooth, and you think "oh shit i've done it now, i've gone and fucked up my teeth for good, god damn it" but then they do ultimately all chew away and clear out and everything's alright, and what's more, as a bonus, you got a comfortable belly full of good-tasting, chewed-up corn.

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 12 July 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

It's a MiraCoil.

how long is a coons age exactly?

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 22 March 2008 21:19 (seventeen years ago)

"In a coon's age" is an American phrase meaning "in a very long time."

???????

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 22 March 2008 21:21 (seventeen years ago)

2. coons age
6 up, 2 down

Normally raccoons normally live roughly 5-6 years in the wild. However once in awhile you will find a big grizzly one that is about 15-16 years old. This my friends, is what you call a "coon's age".

I've had that dog for a coons age, I wouldn't give it up.

Anyone else listening to P.M. Dawn?

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

OMG this is like one of my favorite threads.

No, I'm not listening to PM Dawn but I once heard Set Adrift On Memory Bliss while on acid and it sounded SO good.

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:44 (fifteen years ago)

U should listen to To Rococo Rot = the work of many miniature factories

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:46 (fifteen years ago)

I briefly became excited until I realized you were mocking me.

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)

No I'm not!

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:49 (fifteen years ago)

Well, you win. I just put on The Amateur View.

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

There's still plenty of reasons to be excited. I was merely recommending you repeat what was clearly a memorable experience. And I used a classic ILX quote to do so. (I mean it's true, that quote, I imagine)

xp

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:50 (fifteen years ago)

Milton Parker, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:55 (fifteen years ago)

Oh I'm not hi. I'm tripping balls on ginger tea

What are you editing, Milton?

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

Gotta say, this was a classic mix:

Rex the Dog, "I Look Into Mid-Air"
Nathan Fake, "The Sky Was Pink (James Holden Mix)"
Michael Mayer, "Amanda"
The MFA, "The Difference It Makes (Superpitcher Mix)"
Le Dust Sucker, "Meanboy"
Kaito, "Soul of Heart"
Ghost Cauldron, "Ambient Skit (Superpitcher Ambient Mix)"
Chelonis R. Jones, "I Don't Know? (Just Us Remx)"
Basteroid, "Sonnenbrilliant"
Akufen, "Jeep Sex"
Ada, "Believer"

(possibly not the right track order)

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:56 (fifteen years ago)

I am hi and just hanging out. Girlfriend is asleep on the sofa. It's like 80 degrees in here.

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:57 (fifteen years ago)

Haha, is that mine? That is good. Wow that is a lot of Kompakt. I've been thinking about Kompakt recently.

Batseroid is maybe a weak link, I don't remember that track

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:58 (fifteen years ago)

Yes, it is called MICRO/MACRO.

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 05:59 (fifteen years ago)

Awww, I miss making mixes. They're very diaristic, really.

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:00 (fifteen years ago)

autotune does much more interesting things to spoken word tracks when you varispeed down your source 400%, print it realtime, then varispeed it back up. especially with things like birds

while I'm rendering birdsong on the HD machine I'm comping about 10 minutes of narration vocal takes on the other

nothing's stopping you from making another mix

Milton Parker, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:01 (fifteen years ago)

What is that '90s indie rock band you like?

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:02 (fifteen years ago)

now I know you're not talking to me

earlier I was editing a radio show and one sentence was 'I was on a soccer field playing with bats (long pause) I lost'

Milton Parker, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:03 (fifteen years ago)

I guess not.

I only understand half of what you describe but it sounds very exciting. I wish I could do sound stuff
multiple xxposts

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:03 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry, Milton. Is that a dream?

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

90s indie rock band? Maybe you mean Truman's Water?

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:04 (fifteen years ago)

it was my friend Andrea and I get the impression it happened to her. she was on some sound recording retreat in Africa. unfortunately her preamps don't go to 50kHz, so no recordings of her losing against the bats

here's a pretty great youtube of Bernie Krause slowing down a recording of a tree emitting sap at 70kHz down to the audible range, it sounds like an old school drum machine

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uWkMWDSVZuQ

Milton Parker, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

xp Haha maybe.

jaymc, Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:07 (fifteen years ago)

That video! I did take a field recording class earlier this year. It was fun but I was too busy and had to drop it. I missed making my own contact mic.

Henry's Hepcat (admrl), Saturday, 14 August 2010 06:08 (fifteen years ago)

I think I am about to blow a lot of money on two incredibly expensive japanese microphones and some kind of preamp and become the kind of birder than Jaxon will punch in the face on sight

The title 'Stormcock' was taken from the mistle thrush, the only bird that sits facing the wind in mid-winter and sings into the wind.
