Noise Dude Nonsense

I know this is the Noise Dude board and I don't have to read it if I don't want to, but I'm concerned about threads like this and this, which set up ILX posters as objects of scorn, being an officially sanctioned part of ILXor.com and thus easily accessible to said posters. I find the sentiments expressed within pretty hurtful and offensive, and if they were posted on ILE, I'm convinced the threads would be deleted immediately.

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

Well I can do nothing about that, but I don't know about anything beyond the main two boards being "officially sanctioned". People can just start them if they want to.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 6 August 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago)

So other boards are no longer moderated???

jaymc (jaymc), Friday, 6 August 2004 22:05 (twenty years ago)

The Noise Board has its own moderators.

cutty (mcutt), Saturday, 7 August 2004 01:39 (twenty years ago)

Each board has its own moderators, set up by those who start the board.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 7 August 2004 12:42 (twenty years ago)

Wow. I'm really kinda speechless. To respond would only be to provoke more antagonism, but I just have to express my amazement.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 9 August 2004 08:03 (twenty years ago)

It's the axis.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 9 August 2004 10:39 (twenty years ago)

I didn't realize there was no modding at all of these boards. Given the amount of offensive stuff there, it's a bit worrying -- these boards are connected after all.

ENRQ (Enrique), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:31 (twenty years ago)

what's so offensive there?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago)

i think the whole 'we hate these guys' thread (before you say 'IT'S IRONIC' think a little: maybe it isn't received that way) is offensive. i realise you have a lot of lamer yes-posters on your dick telling you it's cool and shit but... it isn't very.

ENRQ (Enrique), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:43 (twenty years ago)

you're not cool

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:45 (twenty years ago)

that really *hurt*.

ENRQ (Enrique), Monday, 9 August 2004 14:50 (twenty years ago)

why the hell are people who aren't noise dudes or aren't 'on their dick' reading the noise dude board?

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:00 (twenty years ago)

because they're amazing randy

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:01 (twenty years ago)

god this so reeks of 7th graders whining about slambooks ( = dud) (vs. the slambooks themselves) ( = classic)

cinniblount (James Blount), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I've been banned from the Noise Dude board!

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:08 (twenty years ago)

Blount, I'm not usually reading that board -- I just popped in the other day to check it out and discovered a hornet's nest.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:09 (twenty years ago)

that enemys thread is so cute!

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:13 (twenty years ago)

just the thought of there being an "enemy list" makes me want to hug them lots.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 9 August 2004 15:15 (twenty years ago)

cinniblount, I was just thinking about slambooks the other day and how ILX has been one since day one.

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Monday, 9 August 2004 16:16 (twenty years ago)

OK, so wait. We can go onto other boards totally (cf the "Hilarious FanBoy" thread) and take the piss and then come back here and start taking the piss out of them, but if someone else does it on their own board it is bad?

Let me not comment either way, just realise that very few people are probably spotless in situations like this. Not that I agree that taking the piss out of anyone is cool to be honest.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 01:09 (twenty years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 04:03 (twenty years ago)

why the hell are people who aren't noise dudes or aren't 'on their dick' reading the noise dude board?
-- cinniblount (littlejohnnyjewe...), August 9th, 2004

cz it a) gets linked to from ILE, b) gets referred to on ILE, and c) actually what i was REALLY offended by was not the hate list but an anti-semitic comment made by JW on a Bush tax cuts thread on ILE, which I had moderated. I was being agnostic about his bullshit, but that one post has flipped me. I doubt I've checked that board more than four times, as it goes, I wouldn't say I've 'read it'.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 07:59 (twenty years ago)

right -- whatever, obviously being offended by anti-semitic 'jokes' is babyish. fucking whatever, guy.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 08:53 (twenty years ago)

Noodles -- now I look like a psycho! There was a post deleted between my last two, foax.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 09:36 (twenty years ago)

So basically we hate all jews and women

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:14 (twenty years ago)

(before you say 'IT'S IRONIC' think a little: maybe it isn't received that way)

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:32 (twenty years ago)

Did you see where I apologized for that comment?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:38 (twenty years ago)

Yeah, I know that: I'm going to shut up now: but I just don't get the whole thing. And I don't ewven know who you are.

ENRQ (Enrique), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:47 (twenty years ago)

are you.... European/British?

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 11:49 (twenty years ago)

Jon, not everyone who is sick of you is European.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

I think the only thing to be sick of at this point is people talking about me.

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 12:15 (twenty years ago)

That's the second half of the gigantically-irritating equation.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:18 (twenty years ago)

Haha, I've been banned from the Noise Dude board!
-- jaymc (jmcunnin...), August 9th, 2004 12:08 PM. (later)

Welcome to the club.

St. Nicholas (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 13:28 (twenty years ago)

sorry jon calling people babies isn't allowed. people calling you an antisemitic homophobic asshole though? that okily dokily apparently.

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:00 (twenty years ago)

That's it!!! I'm joining the KRIEGSMARINE!

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 14:11 (twenty years ago)

but if someone else does it on their own board it is bad?

The Pickle Bar is part of ILX.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:09 (twenty years ago)

The initial moderation guidelines were explicitly stated to be applicable to ILE and ILM only. Any extension of their influence over other boards happened after I wrote them.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:39 (twenty years ago)

(obv. we don't want kiddy p0rn and copyright violations on n01s3 b0ard)

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 17:42 (twenty years ago)

I think for Andrew's sake, we need to get rid of anything actionable anywhere. And generally, I think most of our rules/guidelines are good ones and I would like to encourage any other boards to largely adopt them.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:55 (twenty years ago)

Question: do you feel that there is anything "actionable" on the noise board?

(Alan has deleted personal emails posted there at the author's request.)

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 18:58 (twenty years ago)

has anyone seen that lars von trier film idioterne? yeah, so, anyway.

|a|m|t|r|s|t| (amateurist), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't suggesting there was, Jon - I've never visited there. I am a 45 year old systems analyst, and not at all a noise dude.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:06 (twenty years ago)

Ok, I'm pretty sure there isn't. Mostly name calling there.

I'm a 22 year old "application developer / systems administrator"

Red Panda Sanskrit (ex machina), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:12 (twenty years ago)

i'm just curious as to why enrq and whoever the fuck else thinks that when jon williams does something that violates the spirit of, um, another couple of boards on ilx (yknow the ones picklerjar was set up to specifically avoid being)(hence the giant 'NO CHOADS ALLOWED' billboards which is what the slambook threads amount to)(as opposed to 'bitchfests ad nauseum' which is what the slambook threads on ilm/ilx/and geegollygee this board right here (since god knows that's what this thread is only enrq and whoever the fuck else demands that they be taken very very seriously when they slam jon)(oh, and jon's not allowed to respond or retaliate)(ie. this board/ilm/ilx = enrq's and whoever the fuck else's own personal picklejar)(only not nearly as fun)(dogs take after their owners)) it is an OUTRAGE but when they do the same thing, over and over and over again, it's an appropriate response to the OUTRAGE?

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 19:35 (twenty years ago)

free speech when you don't say anything about us ... etc etc

cinniblount (James Blount), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 20:26 (twenty years ago)

Na, put down the sandwich and read the first post on this thread ... it is about censoring the noise dude board ok thanks bye

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:12 (twenty years ago)

(and yes, I understand that posting on ilx is a privledge and not a right)

dean? (deangulberry), Tuesday, 10 August 2004 21:34 (twenty years ago)

I'm going to post up site-wide guidelines in the near future. They will be something along the lines of "You have freedom of speech provided that you don't infringe copyright or slander anyone." Obviously this allows threads like the noise dudes' "people we hate" threads; I'm fine with this. If you're so unstable that you can't handle being "hated" by people you should by all logic have no respect for in the first place then you've got bigger issues than this web site. (and how truly can they dislike you if all they know of your character is what you've put forth online?)

The new moderation guidelines as put forward by Ned, Dan, etc (the 'ilx mod posse', if you will) apply ONLY to ILE/ILM. Of course, other subforum mods/operators may state that those rules apply to their subforum also. (I'd imagine with boards like "I Love Books/Film" they'd want to do this...)

The one proviso here is this: if there's anything posted anywhere that I take particular issue with, I might start deleting stuff with extreme prejudice. I've held this personal policy pretty much since I took on the responsibility of hosting the forums, and very few (if any) people have had any issues with it before.

Like I've said many times, this place ain't some sort of democracy. I'm running things how I see fit, with the agenda of keeping ILE and ILM fun and stimulating discussion forums. I have not had personal issues with any posters in the three years I've been involved with the boards, and I have no intention of starting soon.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 04:59 (twenty years ago)

Also I don't mean to call anyone 'unstable', or imply that JW and co don't deserve respect. I'm being both hyperbolic and hypersubjective; trying to appeal to different people's perspectives simultaneously to achieve a level understanding of the situation.

I have loads of respect for pretty much everyone who posts on these forums. I just think some people are suffering a bit from lack of perspective at times. Some people have also behaved quite immaturely, and I hope they'd cut that shit out a bit.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:07 (twenty years ago)

(you know who you are, motherfuckers!! :-)

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 05:07 (twenty years ago)

Thanks, Andrew.

I'd like to point out that, for the record, I never called for the Noise Board to be "censored." I still think that if the thread were on ILE, it would be locked and/or deleted, but I'm not necessarily saying I'd advocate this measure -- despite the fact that I do think it's an offensive thread (but whatever). It just seemed like a double standard to me.

I'm glad, at least, that we're attempting to define protocol for the auxiliary boards. My understanding has always been that they are part of ILX as much as ILE/ILM are -- but maybe that's just because the posters tend to be the same. If we want to think of them as more separate, with their own rules, etc., then I'll be less bothered by what goes on there.

I actually think it's kind of funny that I've been banned. Although it's pretty frustrating not being able to post on, like, the "Diamond Head" thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:45 (twenty years ago)

Oh also: Is there a reason why I can't even READ the "Juicy Gossip about Noise Boarders" thread? I click on it, and up pops a screen that says I've been banned. I can read all the other Noise Board threads just fine.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 11 August 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago)

Actually, it says "Problem inserting message," as if I've tried to post on it, which I haven't.
