My understanding (which may be untrue) is that the people of Carolina don't totally grasp the Panthers, or the Hurricanes, or pro sports in general.

What's good for Wall Street (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

It's still really hard for me to accept the Carolina Panthers as a proper NFL team. There's just something so ... arenafootball2 about them.

☑ (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

Like they would've worked perfectly as one of the made-up teams in Any Given Sunday.

man the eagles looked like shit last week but i don't think the skins are ready to win 2 nfc east road games in a row

remember how bad they looked against the giants, who have a worse D than the eagles probably but a way way way better D than the cowboys

Westbrook due back in for Philly will be a big boost. i didn't watch all of the game but the two times i did turn on Buckhalter dropped a pass and then got stopped on the goal line.

i like the Eagles for the Redskins game but - i think i said something similar in the week 4 thread - i think the Giants game was mostly teething troubles for the Redskins' O. Zorn is looking quite so startled by everything anymore and he and Campbell look like they're reached the same wavelength.

that division is going to be fuckin crazy. they'll all end up with the same record. under NFL rules, should this situation occur, each team has to choose a 'champion' and they fight to the death with flick knives.

Kiffin also opposed some of Davis' big free-agent signings such as wide receiver Javon Walker and, to a lesser degree, cornerback DeAngelo Hall, sources said. Kiffin also expressed public frustration that the team was not more aggressive in claiming other team's released players via the waiver process to strengthen the bottom of the roster.

However, a Raiders source said that Davis privately sent a letter to Kiffin after the season's opening-game loss to the Broncos, attempting to "document" that the coach approved of the offseason acquisitions. A source close to Kiffin described that claim as "fiction."

He said he successfully fought off the latest urge to smoke by meditating instead, which gives him the same "feeling of being free" as marijuana...

Williams said he will not smoke marijuana again while he's in the NFL, but he's uncertain whether he'll abstain when his career ends.

"I'd be lying if I said I'm never going to do it again after I'm done," he said. "I don't know. I don't spend much time thinking about it."

Doesn't sound very uncertain to me.

PS my man-crush on Ricky Williams is the stuff of legend.

CHI @ DET BEARS- I could see Detroit maybe pulling this one off at home, as maybe the Bears have a hang over from the big Philly win, but not really.
ATL @ GB PACKERS- If Rogers doesn't play, I think this is much closer to a toss up.
SD @ MIA CHARGERS but this could be a good match up.
SEA @ NYG GIANTS for no other reason than Seattle doesn't look that hot.
WAS @ PHI EAGLES are at home and this should be a good game.
KC @ CAR PANTHERS - I'm not completely sold on Carolina, but last week for KC was a bit of a fluke as it was at home and Denver gave them some key turnovers.
TEN @ BAL TITANS, but this will be an alley fight with lead pipes.
IND @ HOU COLTS, but I think Houston got the Colts both the last two years at home, but Manning actually got some practice this week coming off a bye so I figure this could be a bombs away blow out.
TB @ DEN BRONCOS AS THIS HAS TO BE THE WEEK I PICK TAMPA TO LOSE AND IT HAPPENS! Criminy they are starting Brian Griese and it is working.
CIN @ DAL COWBOYS
BUF @ ARI CARDS, as I just don't know how good Buffalo really is, not that Arizona is really any big shakes. I still should go BILLS, but they are on the road, but then again is Arizona really a tough place to play? No confidence in my pick.
NE @ SF PATS- The Niners look improved, but I just don't trust any teams in the NFC West as being that good. I don't think any of those teams could win much in any other division.
PIT @ JAX JAGS- Criminy the Steelers schedule is freakin rough, when you have to play Philly, B-more and J-ville's defenses in back to back to back weeks. That is a whole lot of hurt and it has to wear them down. JAGS seem to have overcome the problems with their o-line.
MIN @ NOLA Vikes

earlnash, Thursday, 2 October 2008 01:09 (seventeen years ago)

dude 'zona's likely to be sans Boldin... but then Buffalo is sans Parrish...

rogermexico., Thursday, 2 October 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

so many mystery teams this year. is it too much to ask for some goddamn consistency?!

CHI @ DET like my fabulous contraptions, i have no idea how this Bears team works, it just does
ATL @ GB Pack in scrappy affair
SD @ MIA all 3 supposed AFC big dogs in very revealing match-ups today. i think SD pass their test.
SEA @ NYG should be easy enough for Giants if they can hassle Hass
WAS @ PHI this fuckin division. Iggles will be more wary than Boys were of Skins threat.
KC @ CAR this could be the big points game against KC people were expecting from Denver
TEN @ BAL i think Titans might be 4 real
IND @ HOU assuming Texans will be solid at the home dome again. also, division rivals seem to hate playing them.
TB @ DEN young JC won't enjoy throiwng at Tampa secondary, i don't think
CIN @ DAL Cincinnowins Benglols LITERALLY slaughtered
BUF @ ARI i think losing Boldin loses the game for Arizona
NE @ SF i have a theory that the more time Cassel has to think about things, the more he will fuck them up, so the bye week might not have helped
PIT @ JAX Garrard looks like he may be over his slow start. i think Jags might be coming back into it.
MIN @ NOLA Saints at home, may even get a big score. Vikes defense has actually been fairly toothless.

CHI @ DET - Chicago definitely gellin', Detroit needs to find a running game
ATL @ GB - I think Atlanta could win this and set themselves up as a wild card contender and then not get a wild card
SD @ MIA - Miami feels like a trendy pick, but I think San Diego is either finished losing games they should win or finished period. Gonna bet on the former. They need to squash that wildcat shit quick, tho'.
SEA @ NYG - Giants look deep and great and Seattle isn't going to figure it out in this game
WAS @ PHI - Philly, I guess? I saw Washington's first game and they looked real bad to me, but something's positive clearly going on.
KC @ CAR - Can't really care about these teams, but Carolina?
TEN @ BAL - Tennessee; I'm starting to get excited!
IND @ HOU - Indy or bust
TB @ DEN - Looks like a good game! I think Tampa Bay, but if the score's high it's anybody's guess.
CIN @ DAL - Dallas in everybody's lock, I suppose. Cincy looks even worse than I thought they would and I thought they were a six win team.
BUF @ ARI - Buffalo, but curious to see what the new crop of receivers do.
NE @ SF - New England is awoken, hide your children.
PIT @ JAX - Jacksonville steady rolling.
MIN @ NOLA - Saints and looking forward to seeing them move with all pistons firing.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 2 October 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Green Bay vs Atlanta - ATL since I've consistently picked against them this season.
Tennessee vs Baltimore - TEN. how's this sound? Ravens dominate for 3.5 quarters before Titans get lucky and win in the last minute.
San Diego vs Miami - SAN Unless Miami gets a 76-yard field goal.
Indianapolis vs Houston - IND Take a week off and I forgot Indy was still in the league.
New York (NYG) vs Seattle - SEA I'm picking against the spread more on this one.
Philadelphia vs Washington - PHI. maybe Brad Lidge will even come in and close for them.
Carolina vs Kansas City - CAR. Carolina wins games. Chiefs prefer only to beat Denver.
Chicago vs Detroit - Two QBs that need to STFU. CHI's is less of a bitch at least.
Denver vs Tampa Bay - Winner of this game has to hire Lane Kiffin as an asst. DEN
Arizona vs Buffalo - BUF This year's Super Bowl is gonna break some hearts, I tell ya.
Dallas vs Cincinnati - DAL would have a better challenge playing the Bearcats.
New England vs San Francisco - NE See Indianapolis.
Jacksonville vs Pittsburgh - Pittsburgh has no running game left. That's okay because JAX has no passing game.
New Orleans vs Minnesota - MIN Jaworski caught playing solitaire on telepstrater.

Green Bay vs. Atlanta - Even if Rodgers doesn't play the Green Bay Defense should come through. Pack.
Tennessee vs. Baltimore - The D is still ferocious and maybe the Ravens have finally found their guy in Flacco. Balts.
San Diego vs. Miami - I'm really annoyed when a commentator keeps repeating the stale phrase, "best personnel in football." San Diego's record doesn't reflect that at all. “What the Hell” pick of the week. Fins.
Indianapolis vs. Houston - Houston has improved enough to be ordinary and Indy has declined enough to be the same. Indy.
New York vs. Seattle - This should be a no contest. Eli's.
Philadelphia vs. Washington - Best 2-2 team ever. Wiggles.
Carolina vs. Kansas City - I'm glad I don't have to watch this. Panthers.
Chicago vs. Detroit - Millen is gone, but the Lions are still putrid. Bears.
Denver vs. Tampa Bay - Denver's a fraud. Tampa.
Arizona vs. Buffalo - So's Zona. Buffs.
Dallas vs. Cincinnati - Chad's says he's going to kiss the star if he gets a touchdown. That could be the only interesting thing about this game. If Dallas plays well they could break 60. Boys.
New England vs. San Francisco - Pats.
Jacksonville vs. Pittsburgh - Remember the cripple fight scene from South Park, this is the football version. Stillers.
New Orleans vs. Minnesota - Aint's

i haven't watched houston all year, but they look good! maybe it's just that the Colts suck this year?

horseshoe, Sunday, 5 October 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Houston were very good at home last year. looks like that may have carried forward. how the rest of this game plays out will tell a lot about how the Colts are this year, but it looks like their defense isn't doing it, and their offense isn't doing it enough to make up the difference. and while that is wonderful news for everyone, i am concerned that the Pats will bee exactly the same.

Dungee should've retired last season so's he could've gone out on something of a high.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 5 October 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I'm watching the Chargers game. The Chargers keep trotting LT out there even though he's obviously not healthy and has no burst whatsoever. When they bring in Sproles, they give him the same sort of plays they'd normally give LT, which is insane. I don't understand why they don't bring in Jacob Hester and at least give him a try.

The Dolphins' defense is playing very, very well. They're getting a great pass rush, and the DBs are deflecting a lot of Rivers' passes. LT has run into a brick wall pretty often, but yet they keep sending him up the middle.

On offense, the Wildcat offense is scary, guys. And Pennington is playing perfect Pennington football ... short and medium passes over the middle, which is honestly the Chargers' biggest weakness. Hart and Weddle don't scare anyone, and the linebackers are always looking for the run or to pass rush (ineffectively).

I still think the Chargers will win this game, and the reason is that the Chargers are just a much better team when they're passing more than they're running. They keep trying to establish the run, but it isn't there right now. (As I say this, Rivers gets sacked for a big loss on first down.)

Also, the Chargers definitely do not have the best personnel in football. I am definitely ready to stop hearing that meme. They have a lot of depth all across the roster, but when you compare their defense to a team like the Ravens (for example), it's pretty obvious that they aren't on par. And the offensive line is pretty mediocre. They have great depth in terms of offensive playmakers, but they really miss Michael Turner a lot. They don't have someone who can really come close to replacing Merriman; Jyles Tucker and Marques Harris are good edge rushers, but they don't add much more than that, and get pushed around pretty easily in the running game.

Also, Gus Johnson has mispronounced a lot of names.

I'm so glad we had the Colts/Texans game here, lord what a crazy turn of events. Sage Rosenfeld's went in a couple of minutes from winning the Houston starting QB job to probably having to hide underground, what a huge choke job. I will say that Gary Kubiak deserves quite a bit of the blame in the loss for not just running the rock. The dude should have just run the ball and punted if it came up. That is the kind of wack play calling that will get you fired. It would have taken a bigger miracle for the Colts to get the ball with like 2:30 and 1 time out to drive 80 for a TD, then get the ball back and kick a field goal to tie. The Colts with Manning have done that thing before, especially if you remember that crazy game against Tampa a few seasons back, but the odds of it happening are way less.

your self-declared bacon of common sense (Roberto Spiralli), Sunday, 5 October 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

This is more worrisome in terms of the Dallas season. As a Philly fan, I know how quickly relations with T.O. can devolve over the course of a season. Tonight he'll complain about not getting enough touches -- especially if Dallas ends up losing. Bad feelings will fester. Etc.

the giants have never had officially sanctioned cheerleaders; at one point they had a group of ladies who showed up at the stadium calling themselves something like the giantettes or something insane who they would allow to go on the sidelines and cheer. this was only a couple years in the 60s and 70s though.

lol i love Deion Sanders, he just observed that the last time he cast aspersions on Ladainian Tomlinson's performance people got a little sensitive, a little "Ralph Tresvant."

horseshoe, Monday, 6 October 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

so I tried to figure out what was up w/the priest hanging out on the sidelines, no luck, but, this -

During his first season with the Jaguars, after the team started 0-3, Del Rio had a massive tree stump and axe placed in the team locker room. He also placed a sign that had his new team mantra, "Keep Chopping Wood". It was intended to indicate how they were to slowly whittle away the huge obstacle in the way of improving the team. While most of the team was out for practice, punter Chris Hanson took a swing, missed the stump and seriously injured his non kicking foot. Hanson missed the remainder of the 2003 season, being replaced by Mark Royals. When asked by SEU student and Jags fan Danny Baggett what "chopping wood" meant, he replied, "Use your mind kid. It'll come."

claudia schefter (daria-g), Monday, 6 October 2008 04:01 (seventeen years ago)

Information on the specifics of Del Rio's involvement in the adult film industry are to date widely speculated yet unverified.

johnny crunch, Monday, 6 October 2008 04:14 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know! that's what wikipedia says:

Del Rio wore a suit again during a December 10, 2006 win over the Indianapolis Colts, 44-17. It was widely rumored that the suit Del Rio wore was given to him by a former contact in the adult film industry. Although not verified, the bad press that resulted from Del Rio's associates in the adult film industry caused members in Jacksonville's front office to pressure Del Rio to return to more contemporary styles of coaching attire. Information on the specifics of Del Rio's involvement in the adult film industry are to date widely speculated yet unverified.

"when roffles tearfully leaves the steelers after an illustrious 16 year career"

Considering the pounding the guy takes, Big Ben might not last that long. I figure he will eventually hit the same wall that Steve McNair ran into a couple of years ago where the injuries just keep piling up and his quality of play will start to slip.

The dude I wonder how he will go out is Peyton Manning. On the one hand, I could see him wanting to play long enough that he might try to get every last one of those passing records, but if Favre keeps going the dude might have to play into his 40s. On the other hand, I could see Peyton being the type of dude to maybe revel in walking away while he is still at the top. I also wonder if the guy has an inkling to go into coaching. I think most stars don't go that way as it is way too much work and there is way too much easy money to be made on TV, but he might be an exception (although I could see him wanting to coach in college for some reason).
