There are a couple of really objectionable threads on I Hate Everything (no longer being posted to, but still google-able)

SHIT
I hate you enough to want to eat you!

candidates for deletion?

Alan (Alan), Monday, 28 April 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Go for it or do you need help from here?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 28 April 2003 14:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm in favor of killing the first one but if you get rid of the second one you would lose this classic line: "Wake up you bitch and smell the reality of coffee!" Have a heart!

gareth linked to a thread about shirts whose collars are a different color, but the link pointed to the greenspun server so i found the right thread on OUR server and changed it.

I also deleted a thread I started last november where I basically ranted in a very confused fashion, kind of a losing-pomo-faith borefest. Since the only other posts were there to basically calm me down I don't feel too bad about it.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 April 2003 15:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are we going a bit deletion-crazy today?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Monday, 28 April 2003 18:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

I like the idea of ILX as a palimpsest myself but I know this is probably the least popular idea I have ever come up with.

amateurist (amateurist), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Was anyone else having problems with ILX this afternoon? From about 2 to 3:30, I couldn't get in (error messages - not the poxy fule one but one saying that the page wouldn't load), then from 3:30 to 4:00 it was working, but really. really. slowly.

Nick A. (Nick A.), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

(Martin the last thing I mentioned I deleted a few weeks ago actually and it's been gnawing at me that I hadn't fessed up)

Nick A yes. I'm sure our constant often-futile reloading has helped immensely.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 April 2003 19:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Could summon delete my mis-posted red-exed comparison of Traci Lords to Renee Zelwegger, pls? Thx.

jm (jtm), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:25 (twenty-one years ago) link

can i please have my last post on the "this is all bullshit" thread deleted please.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:31 (twenty-one years ago) link

Done...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I find it hard to believe that Tracer Hand's post was anything less than brilliant and I call for its return to the ILE swampland.

Mary (Mary), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 02:35 (twenty-one years ago) link

uh, is that porn star question phrasing for real? Jesus.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 03:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

Can I reiterate here the value of a link? They aren't difficult to supply, just copy and paste. I mean, I don't know what Spencer is referring to.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 11:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

sorry Martin, check out the phrasing of this question. Am I being oversensitive?

TS: Seka v Traci Lords

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 16:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

It's pretty crass and arseholish, but I don't see it as a candidate for moderator action personally. Had it been the title, yes. Someone else may disagree, of course. (I've not answered partly because of the distaste, partly because I don't have a clue who Seka is.)

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

That thread prob. needs 'B*ngB*s' style censoring, unless we want every perving Googler to find it (maybe we do, I dunno)

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 18:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

that just may be U&K if I knew who that first name was.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm very sorry but can someone please delete this cut-and-paste format-disaster? i'll repost it legibly in a moment

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm afraid I don't have admin privs for that board! Speak to your leader, Nordcskls.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

(btw, formatting goof-ups are not the spirit of this thread, I don't think. Have a care, pls.)

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 19:58 (twenty-one years ago) link

(i know, hence the apology - wouldn't have bothered if it weren't such a long eyesore of a post but point taken)

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

We are moderators, trying to keep this place civilised and prevent terrible things happening, not junior assistant editorial staff! I think we should try to hold a line on this, personally. On the other hand, I am hardly going to object to any mod who fancies that work.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago) link

again: understood, and my apologies.

jones (actual), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, I accidentally posted an enormous article about Robert Mitchum on the Kneesocks thread but I left it up there ot punish myself.

felicity (felicity), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:29 (twenty-one years ago) link

I wasn't trying to get at you, jones, not at all. And I'm not in charge of anything here, I just think we should make the point that we aren't really here for that.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 20:32 (twenty-one years ago) link

Martin, could you please correct Felicity's "to" typo in the post immediately preceding yours?

nabisco (nabisco), Tuesday, 29 April 2003 21:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a small problem:
my new posts are added to the specter of my identity (without a clickable profile and web presence). Last time I checked the ghost was at:
100 Sébastien Chikara 119 (10) sebastien@hedonist-materialism.com

and my troo profile was at:
104 Sébastien Chikara 115 (14) sebastien@hedonist-materialism.com a hedonist materialism theory website

I erased my cookies, logout, login, changed my pw, checked if a cookie was not stored on my laptop or something and it didn't fixed it. The ghastly one is still rising. Statcock aside it is a problem to me because I want people to be able to click on my profile since it's part of some of my "conceptual" posts (exchange system, "pathos of distance" rules of politeness, etc).

Can someone fix this/ explain me what is happening?
(if the problem persists, when I'll submit this post the ghost profile will be at 120)

Sébastien Chikara (Sébastien Chikara), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 03:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

We keep responding to a post in "I hateverything" but it shows up blank unless you highlight it
the post is called "why are there so many stupid people on the internet?"

Lola Falana, Wednesday, 30 April 2003 03:55 (twenty-one years ago) link

Not a moderator, but try FONT COLOR="BLACK" in the brackety things.

Tep (ktepi), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 04:02 (twenty-one years ago) link

I just posted for the first time to Sonny Tremaine's birdland thread and put my private email addy on. Can you change this for me please? Addy as in my prefernces/details, if you would.

Jamie Conway (Jamie Conway), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 06:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

Link?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 10:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

i'm very sorry but can someone please delete this cut-and-paste format-disaster? i'll repost it legibly in a moment

Jones, do you still want me to do this? I don't mind. I enjoy my power.

Nu-moderator here, hi!

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 11:16 (twenty-one years ago) link

where is the facility to turn off search engine indexing on threads?

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 12:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

That feature was discussed, but as far as I know hasn't been implemented. When I get some time I may do this.

Andrew (enneff), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hi, can you remove a link on ILM please. It links to a spoof site using my name. Soliciters might start being involved soon, so I'd rather not have a link hanging arund on a site I use. Thanks guys.

What can you tell me about ESG?

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-one years ago) link

graham has a noindex attribute for threads which puts a robots meta-tag in the html, but there are only 2 threads with this set. i can have a bash at adding the facility to the admin pages if you like. (obv testing etc)

Alan (Alan), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 13:34 (twenty-one years ago) link

Hi fellow moderators - I am having trouble giving admin privileges to a couple of my fellow ILFers - I keep getting an error message after I enter their names. What's wrong? If information is sensitive, could someone possibly email me off-list? I would really appreciate it. Thanks again.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 19:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

Nordicskillz, I think the only ppl who can *hand on* admin privileges remain me, Tom, Alan, Andrew and Graham. Email some of the names/emails of who your designated co-mderators at ILF are and we'll do it for you.

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 30 April 2003 20:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

Someone has been playing silly buggers with the what are you listening to thread and put in a background. Can it be removed?

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 06:21 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ed, done. This is my first mod action. Hope it's ok.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

I have a question. As this thread is linked at the bottom of every page (as "Problem?") would it be a good idea to move this thread on to another board, perhaps one dedicated to moderating? that way it doesn't keep popping up on new answers so much. just a thought.

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 07:53 (twenty-one years ago) link

I thought the idea was that it did keep popping up in new answers so mods would see it and act on it.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 08:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

yeah, yr right.

mods could e-mail subscribe to it?

Just thinking out loud really. all this new found power is going to my head.

p.s. i've written the "don't index this thread' code -- is it actually wanted?

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-one years ago) link

What, like a Googleproof facility? Could be very useful indeed...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:24 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's the bunny. it puts <META NAME="ROBOTS" CONTENT="NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW"> in the head of the HTML.

http://www.google.com/bot.html
http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/meta-user.html
http://www.robotstxt.org/wc/exclusion.html#meta

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 1 May 2003 09:44 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sounds like a good idea but as with all mod powers, there should be guidelines as to when it ought to be used. It should be used sparingly. How will new and interested people find us if not through google.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

interested people are boring.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:03 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes, this needs to be mods-only or everything will get removed from Google. I think we need to make it harder for nazis to find us, for instance, but I'm not sure how much we have to worry about porn stuff.

I prefer this to be prominent in New Answers. It keeps the discussion and decisions public and open, it makes us more accountable, and email alerts would only alert me at home, not when I log in at work. I don't want ILE emails going to my work address, as it would prove too distracting, and ILE would take over my entire life rather than only my home time.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 1 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago) link

mods should now be able to "googleguard" threads on the admin message page. it's next to the "Un/Lock Thread" button.

(This is a good sign that I am getting to grips with the code, but I'm still working on commenting it all. I got majorly sidetracked understanding the trackback bits and pieces)
