Yes I think it should be in giant flashing letters on the front page with "(ED TOLD US)" in brackets.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:30 (twenty-one years ago) link

All must turn up there sporting hats emblazoned with this logo.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:36 (twenty-one years ago) link

In addition, pictures of Ed on the hats would make things clearer.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:52 (twenty-one years ago) link

Fake lustrous blonde dreadlocks emmanating from the back of the hats would make the look complete.

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 14:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

An actual shout, not taking the piss out of Ed:

IT'S ON MY THREAD, GET IT OFF, GET IT OFF, EEEUUUWWW!!!

In Praise of Kate St. Clair

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

you wanted hatton wall deleted? i dont understand. i dont want to go if it is too good for the general public

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

I've been Sp00nered. I feel unclean. GET IT OFF, GET IT OFF, GET IT OFF!!!

(If this were a 50's sitcom, I'd be perched on a chair holding my skirts and shrieking about a mouse running around the kitchen.)

kate (kate), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

What is going on with the code? At the bottom of the "Heavens! ILX is slow and frustrating ;)" thread there was an admin log of actions taken by Graham today.

I also tried posting something in another thread and it wouldn't let me, so I was wondering if the code is being messed with.

Larcole (Nicole), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:22 (twenty-one years ago) link

The general public are welcome, the licenscing authorities are not.

Ed (dali), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 15:23 (twenty-one years ago) link

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Heavens! ILX is slow and frustrating ;)
"12:05 PM, 16 Jul 03 Message 3689862 deleted by Graham
12:05 PM, 16 Jul 03 Message 3689862 deleted by Graham"

Didn't we fix this problem?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 16:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

It doesn't check whether the message was already deleted or not, hence the duplicate if you reload or click back or something. I guess it wouldn't be that hard to fix.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:33 (twenty-one years ago) link

?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:46 (twenty-one years ago) link

Thats not the problem Graham, care to guess again?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:57 (twenty-one years ago) link

You're a cunt?

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 17:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

Oh you mean me using my software backdoor to systematically oppress comments that aren't to my liking. Sorry about that.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:04 (twenty-one years ago) link

Graham is your address stil the same? I would like to send you a CD.

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:07 (twenty-one years ago) link

OK, rather then drag this the fuck out, why are you still holding admin privledges?
This is SHOUTING-for-MODERATOR thread pt. III!! [derailed: go to thread IV]

Oh you mean me using my software backdoor to systematically oppress comments that aren't to my liking. Sorry about that.

I don't know you, I don't put it past you.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:08 (twenty-one years ago) link

I don't know. The only way to remove them is from the database and I don't have a password for that any more.

(I posted a stupid message and removed it ten minutes later. No conspiracy. I was too busy trying to make everything work to have time for back doors. About the worst I can do is kill long searches, and that gets old pretty quick)

(No Ally, I'll email you)

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:14 (twenty-one years ago) link

Please do Graham! :)

Ally (mlescaut), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 18:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

regarding graham's post to that thread about speeding ilx up: if certain administrative actions are a major factor then it would certainly help to request that the 4 million people with moderator privileges don't just use them in order to tidy up after themselves. I was looking around on the log page the other day and a surprising number of moderator actions involved changes to posts that the moderator in question made.

although I did this a few times myself when I was a moderator I must say, besides the extra load on the server this just does not seem that cool.

Josh (Josh), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am am bad culprit of this (tidying up typos, making wording better immediately after posting, though not later cause that seems like cheating). I did not stop to think that it might slow down the server. I will stop.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago) link

Good show, old boy, have a slug.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 22:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yes don't do that moderators, he says hypocritically. (I didn't do it much, actually, and certainly not for typos.)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 07:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Just a question, are there some scheduled tasks on the server that occur between midnight and 3 aussie time, because that my explain the slowdown around this time. (and of course, the meeting off last hour of UK work, NYC lunchtime and just in the office westcoast)

Ed (dali), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ah crap, I'll stop too

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:28 (twenty-one years ago) link

the long searches are the real pain, they accumulate, then they slow down the newanswers caching, and THAT then slows down all requests based on newanswers, so all these things snowball into a, er, logjam (can you snowball into a log jam, mm jam. paper jam is my favourite)

Alan (Alan), Thursday, 17 July 2003 08:54 (twenty-one years ago) link

Are all searches long searches, or are there any tips for getting them quicker? Because it's not like the punters are crying out to be staring at a blank screen for minutes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago) link

The more common the word and the more search terms you use, the longer the search. Try to think of one unusual word that appeared/might have appeared in the thread you're after, if possible.

N. (nickdastoor), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:15 (twenty-one years ago) link

There's a Spooner thread on the loose on ILM and it's lasted longer than usual. Can one of the mods please crush him like a puny ant?

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Thursday, 17 July 2003 10:26 (twenty-one years ago) link

Provide links please.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 July 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago) link

No offense intended, but could we not have an error message that reads: "TURN BACK YOU POXY FULE!" Having to read that repeatedly makes me slightly nauseated.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Yeah, it should say "FUCK!" in enormous 72pt letters in red flashing text t odraw everyone's attention to it within the workplace setting!! Also: midi files and porn.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

How about tubgirl pic?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

Midi files OF porn.

Tep (ktepi), Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

It just sounds too D&D or something.

Rockist Scientist, Thursday, 17 July 2003 16:41 (twenty-one years ago) link

That is the best error message EVAH! (you poxy fule!)

Chris P (Chris P), Thursday, 17 July 2003 17:09 (twenty-one years ago) link

Erm, what's happened to the 'search' feature?

Pinkpanther (Pinkpanther), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

here are the links to the spoonered threads:

POX titties

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:37 (twenty-one years ago) link

Spooner is being personally offensive towards me on the "nice arses" thread. I would ask that his comments about me please be deleted in the interests of good taste. Thank you. But you can leave the stuff about Julian Casablancas, that's far more interesting.

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:38 (twenty-one years ago) link

delete this thread too:

POX nice arses

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:39 (twenty-one years ago) link

No! Don't delete that thread! Everything that wasn't him was nice!

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think graham should always have admin priveleges.

That Girl (thatgirl), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

its gonna be an effort to just delete his posts bcz he'll keep posting to it but whatever. the links were asked for. i just gave it.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:42 (twenty-one years ago) link

Sigh. Can you not delete it, but just delete his offensive post and lock it? I liked Sonic Boom saying I had the 10 best asses in pop.

kate (kate), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:43 (twenty-one years ago) link

heh. like i said. whatever.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:45 (twenty-one years ago) link

maybe get the ip (since apparently it's where he works) and e-mail someone else there 'here's what this fucker does on your dime' (or at least threaten too).

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:47 (twenty-one years ago) link

in any case, some generic ip blowback might be useful.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:48 (twenty-one years ago) link

also, as I have registered the e-mail address spoonered@excite.com, I must profess outrage, OUTRAGE!, at someone posting using that e-mail address. ahem. let him use his own addy.

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 18 July 2003 07:56 (twenty-one years ago) link

(I was going to post this on the "Nice Arses" thread, but it's now locked (why?), might as well post it here. So this is about Spoonered.)

But he used to be capable of sensible conversation too, I remember. Call me a hippie, but I've always thought reasoning with someone (if it's possible, and in this case I still hope it is) is a better option than being aggressive towards him (=deleting half of his posts). It'll just make him more convinced that we are pseudo-liberal Fascists, and he'll keep on coming in more and more oppressive incarnations.

Please, "Spooner", prove me I'm not wrong.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 18 July 2003 08:50 (twenty-one years ago) link

If we hadn't tried a bunch of other options first, do you think we would still be reduced to this? This is not something that has been undertaken lightly or without debate.
